Definitely knows her material. It's an intense class, and you will definitely learn a lot if you apply yourself. Be prepared to hear her cuss a lot, and she gets a little too irritated sometimes when you ask her questions and makes you feel stupid. Manageable, though.
Dr. Pryor is awesome! She's extremely passionate about her subject which makes class so much fun. She's always good at responding to emails and getting back with us. She's also just a very cool person. I wish we were best friends. Take her Sociology class!
Dr. Pryor is a great professor. She is really passionate about sociology so she definitely keeps your interest. The work load is not bad at all. There are only two tests and quite a few weekly grades so it's not hard to do well. Just go to class and pay attention. If I take anymore Soc. classes I'll definitely be sure to take hers!
Really great teacher! She is one of the best professors I have ever had. Her lectures are very clear and gives good examples to help you understand. If everyone could have her as a Sociology professor, society would be much better! She gives a great general knowledge of important social issues.LOVED this class. Attendance is MANDATORY though!
Very nice, but super enthusiastic about the subject. Sometimes she can burn you out on it. Make sure you read the text book and do your conversation starters, or you will fail. Other than those though, it's a fairly easy course to get through.
I'm sure she's great if you take her for sociology, but for FYS she expected us to know more about the subject than we did. A lot of reading and class discussion. She's funny. Can be kind of rude. Also very liberal (not that that's a bad thing. Take that as you will. Wasn't my favorite class but others might like it.
The class is intense in a good way. Exams aren't hard if you pay attention in class and do the reading. She's cool and keeps class interesting. Very helpful, but can sometimes make you feel stupid for asking a question.
Pryor is enthusiastic, she loves what she does and tries to make the class interesting. The class is lecture style, she does not use slides or write anything on the board (and if she does it's practically illegible). WARNING!!! if you are DYSLEXIC -- DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, you will be extremely frustrated and end up teaching yourself the material.
She is super nice outside of class, but in class, I was sometimes uncomfortable from how intense and demanding she was at times. Kind of rude and interrupts a lot too. I also didn't have much interest in my section of FYS. I learned, but I dreaded the class. 98% of it was discussion based, which got boring. I'm sure her sociology class is better!
Make sure to not sit in the very front. She is very intense and kind of intimidating. She really knows what she is talking about, but she thinks her opinions on things is the only way to look at it. When you ask a question she will be sure to make you feel stupid or tell you she has told the class this a hundred times. She is a really hard grader.
Dr. Pryor is the best professor I have had at Belmont so far. She is a little intimidating but she is so passionate about what she teaches. There are only two tests (midterm and final), two papers, and required participation in the YMCA literacy program. I learned SO much in this class and wish I could take her again
Dr. Pryor is exceedingly intelligent and passionate about her field. She has great insights and opinions. She can be a bit intimidating, so you need to have your stuff together. Do the reading and participate in class.
extremely intense about he subject matter, unless you agree with her don't say anything... even if you do agree it's better to be silent because she takes every comment as a chance to cut people off and shut them down, you will also have a lot of papers to write
Super passionate and fierce professor. Really learned fascinating and applicable stuff, she keeps lectures interesting and makes you think about things in a way you never thought you would. She's a tough cookie but I learned more in this class than any of my others.
She complains about her life and how it is so hard and what she has gone through and doesn't ask about the issues her students go through. She makes her students feel like idiots when they ask/answer questions. I couldn't stand class with her, I have had to hold back my anger because I just wanted to yell at her. But she's hot.
She is so passionate and intense about sociology it definitely grabs your attention! Not afraid to be "real" as she puts it. As intense/scary as she seems, she is super nice and gives you the grade you deserve. Be active in class, don't be late (EVER!), and don't be intimidated by her and you'll be great. Great class taught by a great teacher!
probably one of the most underrated professors at belmont. she challenges students to look at society in a way they haven't before, and this can be incredibly intimidating for many of the "typical" belmont students. She's opinionated, yes, but her opinion is to be open minded. do your work and don't ask stupid questions, this class is worth taking.
I. Love. Erin. Pryor. People who tell you to avoid her are usually the ones who either 1) are only looking for a class to breeze on through or 2) are offended andor threatened by her honesty. Take the class if you want to be engaged with information that matters and is given in a concise and intelligent way.
Super passionate about teaching and society/sociology. Don't expect to be babied. She keeps it real. Read for class and you should be fine. Tests are hard but not unreasonable.
VERY passionate professor. She can come off as rude and scary (and she can be) but she is actually a really cool person and good professor if you just give her a chance.
Can be intimidating. Her class is interesting and definitely challenges you to look at the world in different ways. Just do the reading and you'll be fine.
Oh Dr. Pryor. She's extremely intelligent but also extremely unapproachable. The first day she told us to listen up because she would never repeat herself. The class was terrified to ask for any clarification, help, etc. Which hurt a lot of students. The class was okay. Not the most interesting but a GND nonetheless.
Dr. Pryor is one of my favorite teachers ive had. She encourages acceptance of all. Very liberal. Lecture oriented but doesnt deny questions or discussions if they arise. Grade is mostly 3 tests. Random attendance taken. Barely used textbook but had to buy for access code to take tests
Shes difficult. And kicked a few students out for not taking a certain class that isnt even a prereq. Unapproachable and intimidating. Shes only nice if you get one on one with her. She def puts on a front for the class as a whole as "a tough prof". ENTIRE CLASS IS GROUP WORK. did not enjoy this course at all. very dull with just 9 students.
Dr. Pryor is a GREAT professor. If you are looking for an easy A or someone who is going to baby you, go somewhere else. However, if you want to learn and be inspired, then she is a great choice.
love love love Dr. Pryor. She inspired me to switch my major to sociology she's so dope. I had her for first year seminar and probably will have her again in the future. We had a lot of work to do but it was all very relevant to the topic it just took a lot of preparation outside of class. **Get on her good side!!!!
I've never felt more stupid in a class before. I asked a question once and she literally laughed... she teaches as if she is showing off how much she knows and not actually wanting to help anybody understand the material. Just don't take this class.
She's a good professor who can seem intimidating at first glance, but is nice one on one & really does enjoy teaching. She's straight forward & very passionate about sociology. Make sure to read & pay attention in class. This class is basically all lectures & tests. Do online practice tests and the tests are pretty easy. Made sociology interesting.
Dr Pryor was inspiring and it was awesome to see how much she cared, but at times this class was unbearable. We had to write what seemed like an essay and read 40+ pages of academic readings for every class. Some students loved her while others found her way too opinionated. If you want to really learn take this class, but be prepared to for WORK
Dr. Pryor is one of my favorite professors I've ever had. She seems intimidating and tough at first, and that is somewhat true, but she's also hilarious and is so willing to answer any questions you may have. Dr. Pryor is more passionate about what she does than any other teacher I've seen. Go to class and do your readings and you'll love it!
Dr. Pryor is extremely passionate about the course material, and is very caring. I met with her outside of class and she was more than willing to help me with getting info about majoring in Soc. Take the YMCA extra credit opportunity, and try not to miss class. Make sure you do all readings and take good notes on her lectures.
Professor Erin's class is primarily lecture with a large class size. She is extremely critical of technology. For example, if you have your phone/computer out it is an automatic withdrawal/fail. So if you are a computer note taker, stay away. Overall, this class feels like a freshman nanny state and I would not take it again.
I took this first semester freshman year and it really made me study and work so hard just for a GenEd
Erin is one of the best teachers I've had at Belmont and I only took her intro class. She hates that the class is so big- she would rather have a discussion, but you can still see her passion. She has an enormous heart and I don't think I would have gotten through the semester without her. She is hilariously sarcastic at all times. Take her class!!
She does not write on the board. She lectures every class, sitting in front of her book. She looks at teaching as a job. She is not enthusiastic. She throws a lot of busy work at you. If she will not be in class, she will get a sub-teacher and will still give you an absence. No technology & all of the exams are online and multiple choice.
Best professor I have at Belmont. She is incredibly passionate about the materials which made me want to learn. It is a no technology course so if you can't keep your phone/laptop down for an hour avoid her class. However I feel as though having no technology helped me learn better. Her tests and gradings are fair. BIG 10% extra credit opportunity
Passionate about sociology and cares about students. You need to read for class. Not hard.
She's honestly pretty rude and not a good teacher.
A great professor. She is truly passionate about sociology and social issues. The class I took is lecture based and her lectures truly make you think and they make class interesting. It can get boring a little bit depending on the section, but overall it is an amazing class. She never fails to explain points and to help answer questions!
She be spicy. I once cried in front of her, but she also then cried so not that bad. She's a really tough teacher but she is passionate about what she is talking about.
she is extremely passionate and her lectures are interesting. Not approachable or very helpful when it comes to asking questions regarding course work, she just expects you to already know everything and gets offended if you don't understand. Wouldn't take her again although the class wasn't very hard at all she's just a lil cray cray.
It was clear from day 1 that Dr. Pryor is very passionate about Sociology. I learned a lot in this class, but you have to show up and do the reading to do well! She is blunt, so she can be intimidating, but she will recognize if you see her outside of class. 10 points extra credit is offered if you tutor with the YMCA.
Dr. Pryor is one of the most passionate teachers I've ever had. She loves Sociology, and is so knowledgeable about it that it sometimes get lost in an Intro course. A lot of the info blended together, so it was important to pay attention in class and in the readings. Also, there is a 10 point add on to your grade if you tutor 1/wk through the YMCA!
DR. PRYOR IS AWESOME!! No technology allowed in class but she'll keep you entertained and engaged during class which is solely lecture. She is so passionate about what she's teaching and cares about her students. Might come across as intimidating but is really such an incredible human being, take Erin Pryor for SOC!!
this was the hardest FYS class that I know of but I don't regret taking it at all because I enjoyed her teaching style so much. making an A+ may almost be impossible so if you're concerned about your GPA, don't take this class.
Erin is amazing!! She cares so much about what she does and she really cares that you get the most out of your college experience. Do the YMCA credit opportunity because if you do, 10 points extra credit, and you can opt out of the final. I did all of the readings for this class and barely got an A, so make sure you know what you're in for!!
If you disagree with her, keep it to yourself. If you have a question, don't ask it unless it gives her a chance to show off/talk about herself in her answer. Some students would ask questions and she would just stare at them for a second and move on with the class - or she would LAUGH. All she does is lecture, you can't use a laptop, DON'T BE LATE
DO NOT TAKE. So much homework. at least 2-3 pages worth of long answers due for each class. averages about 30 pages of reading for every class. almost impossible to handle this amount of workload with other classes. Not good at explaining. Thinks she is always right and if you do not think the same way then you are wrong. Again, avoid this class.
I would never take her FYS class again. she's very one-sided. don't show opposing views or you'll get scorned. don't talk about yourself because she'll one-up you every time. don't miss class or she'll hate you. impossible to make an A. you couldn't pay me to take it again. so much hw, & if she doesn't like your work you don't get credit. TERRIBLE.
Honestly, if you apply yourself in the class, it isn't that hard. Dr. Pryor can be tough on you at times and might seem scary, but she comes from a good place in regards to wanting you to succeed. She is super passionate about Sociology and has some pretty exciting stories. I would take her class again.
Dr. Pryor is a very intruiging lady. Sometimes she talks about herself too much but its all to benefit the learning environment and help us grasp concepts. If you read everything she assigns in class, then it will be a piece of cake. Watch out for pop quizzes and weirdly worded questions. PS: Do the YMCA extra credit. You wont regret it.
She can definitely be unnecessarily rude or sarcastic at times, but she is very passionate about sociology and isn't a boring lecturer. I think I could have done better if I put in more hours of studying. The only thing that saved my grade was the YMCA extra credit. If you take her class, you have to do the YMCA extra credit!
Putting it simply - just don't take her class. It was the hardest class of my first semester and made it almost impossible to finish work for other classes. She seems like a good person but takes all her problems out on the students. She can be extremely rude and unforgiving no matter your situation. If you want a hard semester, take her class.
The absolute worst class I have ever taken. By far the hardest of all FYS seminar classes and can easily wreck your first semester. This class ruined my introduction to Belmont. The workload is simply insane and extremely unrealistic for a first semester student.
If you want to hear her complain about all her life problems, have ridiculous amounts of work, and be told that you need to contribute more to class discussions when all she does is talk, then take this class. She is rude and will find a problem with anything you write. Save yourself from misery and don't take her for seminar. peace and love.
Dr. Pryor was the hardest thing about this class. She has a very difficult personality and while I can usually get along with people with a dry and cynical sense of humor, Dr. Pryor crossed the line and is just plain rude. You can do well if you spend hours studying but dealing with her is not worth it. DO NOT TAKE if you don't have to.
I took Dr. Pryor's 8 week intro to sociology class and I barely passed with a B. I studied for maybe 6 hours at a time on the tests and still barely made it through. Her regular courses could be different, but do not take this accelerated class if you are not a sociology major. It was the most stressful part of last semester. She get v personal too
She is very nice, but very passionate which caused her to go on tangents a lot. She sits at the front of the class and lectures from her notes so there is no powerpoint to look at when you're studying so take good notes. Everyone stresses that it is important to do the readings but I didn't and was fine. DO THE YMCA EXTRA CREDIT. This class is fine
Dr. Pyor can be intimidating at first. She has high expectations about the effort you put in as her student. If you want to get an intro soc credit but want to put in the minimal effort for it, she is smart enough to call you out for it. She knows what she's talking about and her lectures are highly organized and comprehensive.
She is really passionate about what she is talking about but is extremely scattered and wastes a ton of time on tangents. Did not learn much and the tests were hit or miss. She clearly loves this subject I just do not really recommend this class.
I got a decent grade so this is truly about her: She missed several classes were always incredibly unorganized. Her whole fys class is based on her own political views and if you don't align yourself with her worldview, she shuts you down. Offered no help for our research papers and then got mad when we didn't follow the exact directions. Bad
The materials for this class were not particularly difficult; however, Dr. Pryor made this class difficult. The course was very unorganized, and she missed several class sessions. I found it difficult to prepare for a seminar based class when the professor didn't offer much insight other than her own opinions.
Dr. Pryor is extremely unorganized and unprofessional. She is always late. She uses dry humor but most of the time she is just rude. She jumps into lecture like you are already a pro on the topic and overly complicates sociology. The book is 12x more interesting and will teach you more. If you like sociology do not take her class.
She is very unprepared. She doesn't organize class therefore when she talks there isn't a powerpoint or nothing to learn from she just talks the whole class. She does seem very mean , but you can tell she has a passion for soc. She come to class like we're major in soc.
Dr.P is great. She'll kick your butt, but I learned a ton!! Now I know how to read and think critically, how to do research methods, and how to do better presentations. All of this will be useful in future classes and after I graduate. She can come off as strict or stern but it's just that she cares about you and has high standards.
I have a minor in sociology and was genuinely trying to understand intro to sociology; she made it extremely difficult to understand the content. I feel that she needs to update her lecture- it is very unorganized and hard to understand- she mentioned she hasnt updated her lecture notes since she started teaching.
Do not take her FYS class. I had an extremely hard time understanding her as she was unorganized and unprofessional. Aside from that, her FYS class is revolved around her political views and I couldn't handle the sort of conversation her and other students had that I would deem unnecessary. Yes I failed, but really it was because I hated that class
Dr. Pryor is an awesome person but not too great of a professor. I had her for first year seminar and she typically is disorganized and talks a lot throughout class when we are supposed to be leading the discussions. Again, she is a great person and mentor just not a great prof for first year seminar.
Came into FYS class expecting to have lots of good discussions, but the one time I brought up an opposing viewpoint, I got scorned for it. We hardly had any discussions, and she talks the whole time in circles from one viewpoint. Not too much work if you time manage well, but definitely wouldn't recommend if you want to actually learn things.
Dr. Pryor is not a good teacher. I highly dont recommend her class. She always cancels class and assigns a lot of papers
Dr. Pryor is definitely not the worst professor ive ever had, but she tends to get off topic a lot. She also does not have any slideshows and you aren't allowed to use technology in class at all. She will just lecture the whole class period and expect you to take notes. It can be a hard class to sit thru , but I get that its a hard subject to teach
Never take SOC with Dr Pryor. She's terrible at grading, she lectures in class the Entire time, and she is not very reachable outside of class. Plus there is no technology allowed, so if you are a laptop note-taker, good luck.
Dr. Pryor is a tough professor, but she is so passionate about Sociology. Her class is lecture heavy. She assigns lots of readings and expects that you do all the readings; honestly, you won't do well on the exams if you don't. Ultimately, you get out of class what you put into it. Dr. Pryor is an engaging professor if you want to be there.
I didn't like Dr. Pryor. The class was lecture based with no slides and no technology allowed. She expects you to write down and understand every detail and is condescending when you ask her to repeat. She's a passionate woman, just not a good teacher for our generation. I was very excited for Sociology, but ended up getting nothing out of it.
Dr. Prior's lectures make zero sense whatsoever and I think every person in my class would agree to this. She seems to know what she is talking about, but her lectures are all over the place I could barely take a single note. Her tests are multiple choice and so hard.
Do. not. take. this. class. with. her. There's very little material that gets graded. It sounds nice but she grades so hard so my grade took a beating. Her lectures are just her rambling-off notes she wrote in this notebook. There is no PowerPointz\s or technology. It made it extremely hard to take notes. She knows what she's talking about tho.
Be prepared to sit and listen to her talk for the ENTIRETY of the class. That's all this class is. She just repeats what she makes us read, and rambles through her lectures. She does not grade in a timely manner. Does not allow any use of technology in her class - ie cannot even have a phone or laptop sitting on the desk. Frequently late to class.
She lectures with no powerpoint + no tech allowed in class despite having an online-only textbook. She constantly cancels, is impossible to reach by email and never in her office, and her lectures are extremely long with no clear point and extremely circular vocab/words that could be more easily described if she just used powerpoints/materials.
DO NOT TAKE!!!! Showed up late every class and expected us to stay late. She also talked about the same thing every time. Her test wasn't really what she talked about in class. No class participation. Honestly just feel that she didn't even know she was still talking at some points.
She is not for everybody, and in her defense, she gives students a warning about that on the first day of class. However, she made it clear that she didn't want students to be late to her class yet she was late almost every single class period and always had an excuse for herself, and rarely took accountability, which didn't sit right with me.
I was in this class for two meetings before dropping I went into it open minded (despite her previous reviews) and yet was appalled at the general disrespect she showed towards her students. She was rude in answering questions and often bragged about the difficulty of her class. I advise any class but hers. Maybe it got better later on. Who knows.
All she does is ramble. The students didn't even get to introducing ourselves until the 3rd class. Keep in mind, the class was an hour and 15 minutes. FYS is a very discussion based class but it's unlikely that anyone in a discussion with her will ever be able to get a word out. Seriously. Do NOT take.
She's a lot. work load-wise and personality-wise, she is a lot. Good Luck
I have been in this class for two months and we're two weeks behind. She's late to almost every lecture, and she spends half of the class on unrelated tangents or personal anecdotes which is why we are behind. I'm two months into the class and she hasn't graded anything, and there are very few assignments to take. Would have dropped if possible.
She loves the sound of her own voice. And she repeat's the same thing over and over again getting nowhere. At least she is passionate about what she teaches.
I've never felt the need to warn people about a professor - DO NOT TAKE PRYORS CLASS. If you need to fill a humanities credit, take anything else. She's rude and disrespectful of student's time inside and outside of class. She goes on tangents and her lectures are horribly confusing, and she talks more about her personal life than sociology.
Lectures are hard to follow, 95% of the class is lost, sleep, or look annoyed during lectures. 2 weeks left in the semester & I have 4 assignments graded. Her canvas organization is messy. She doesn't allow the use of phones or even electronic note taking in her class. She is late to class 100% of the time. We have been behind the whole semester.
Frequently late, gets off topic, very unorganized lecture structures that are hard to follow, canvas is unorganized. She is over a month behind on grades for some assignments. She also gives no feedback so I don't know how to improve my grades.
I took this course despite negative reviews because I wanted to judge it fairly. Many complaints were valid—no feedback, no visuals, and long lectures—but I saw a passionate professor who truly cared. Her teaching style wasn't ideal, but I still gained a solid understanding of sociology and developed a real interest in the subject.
I had her last semester. I left every class annoyed but relieved. Worst teacher I have ever had. Worst material ever.
She doesn't answer emails and her lectures are long and frequently just her getting off topic or repeating the same thing over and over. terrible class.
DO NOT TAKE HER I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE HER! I truly do not have enough horrible things to say about this class. Her lectures are incredibly difficult to follow and I leave class hating my life. I have never struggled in a class like this before and am hoping I pass. Please do yourself a favor and stay far far away from her to save yourself the agony.
This class was very confusing. The majority of classes consisted of lectures which were her mainly talking in circles and repeating herself. If you put some effort you should get a good grade, but her teaching style is very hard to follow.
