Had Erina for my first English class of University. She is awesome. Very engaging, super kind, and super flexible with her students. The material is decently interesting, and assignments were very fair. 11/10 would recommend
Ok so I did not want to take an English class. She is amazing. Kind. Brilliant. dedicated to students. I worried it would be boring - and for a time it was but it was a trick - then she made it all make sense. She has us learn old texts to track ongoing concerns for gender and race and justice. And I never wrote well until she schooled me.
Dr. Harris is unlike anyone. Magical and Brilliant - but she cares more about our interpretations than her own. Her teaching methods are not conventional - she totally reworked the essay-writing class - we start with basics so we can leave empowered. I have never learned more. No teacher has been so generous or demanding.
Prof. Erina brings in unique and challenging novels and poetry. Assignments can be complex but this is making me a much better writer. Ask questions! - she will meet with you or answer all emails. She even helps all her students with drafts unlike any prof I had before. Amazing class discussions. And she is so poetic. Take any class with her!
Didn't want to take an English class since not my area. Even the readings not my style. But then she was amazing. I learned to read outside my comfort zone. She marks hard but it is valuable because she remembers each student and helps us get better if we just meet her half way. Marks fair. I think she changed me.
I had to pay for this so I rented it. I am not in English. Then she is really weird. What I mean is she is not like other professors. She cares. She teaches really unusual perspectives and books. She will answer one hundred emails. She just wants you to tell her what you need and then she will do it. Super weird and rare.
Amazing and fair. And really cool. Cant figure out how old she is but she is really contemporary. And super smart and beautiful but she downplays it. Just wants to help us in our lives.
Am not in English so don't know what they usually do. This super caring lady taught strange new stuff and made me care about it. English can actually relate to life! I first thought she is hard as a grader but then I realized she is trying to use this stupid course to help us have power in our lives. Artsy and amazing. Work and speak in class.
Amazing feedback on my essays. I am not really good at them. Amazing respect for students. She cares what we think and learn. Likes outside the box thinking but I like that. I learned things with her. I think I will remember her for a long time.
Dr. Harris is the best prof ever. She grades hard but fairly and will help you with your writing if you put in the time. Brilliant woman and she will really get excited about your ideas too. She is really big on respect and has high standards for writing and ideas. Won't coddle you but will nurture you to do your best work ever.
Professor Harris is definitely an amazing professor! She creates an encouraging atmosphere during lectures to speak out your interpretations whether it is good or not. For assignments, she provides constructive feedback and you will have great mark by sticking to it. I was afraid of essay writing before, but I have more courage now!
Prof. Erina is amazing! She sincerely cares about her students' success! She is a tough, but fair marker. Her expectations are high, but achievable. She clearly outlines what she expects of her students. She does class workshops on most writing assignments to help us improve certain skills, which I found very helpful. Participation is important!
Best English prof ever! She's brilliant but cares so much about our interpretations of the texts. She gives really useful feedback on essays. Starts with the basics of essay writing and works her way up which is super helpful. Helps with essay drafts. She's kind and understanding - reach out to her for whatever you need and she'll help for sure.
The only prof in all my classes who knew my name. I was sick and got behind and Prof. Harris worked with me to make a catch up plan. I would have fallen through the cracks and failed it without her. Most nurturing teacher I have had.
I took this course in the winter and it is summer now but I want to thank Prof. Erina before I graduate. As others say here, she helps with scholarly writing, sure. MOST IMPORTANTLY she made me want to write poetry again! on behalf of her passion for poetry, fiction, and complexity. Thank you Dr. Harris. You are a ray of light!
Professor Harris is great! The best English prof I had so far(in my limited experiences). She is caring, friendly, and funny. Wish I worked a bit harder to get an A+(90% or above average), but theres no regret in taking the class! And I really appreciate learning the university standard-paper and MLA!
Amazing prof. Makes it easy for everyone to participate. She really cares about every student and wants to engage everyone. She has clear expectations on grading and gives great feedback on papers. Best ENGL 102 prof without a doubt. She does class workshops on each assignment and will edit your drafts before submission. Makes english enjoyable.
Wow! The most candid prof I have ever had. The most valuable Engl class I have taken by far, I found myself excited to go to attend - I don't even like Engl. She took the time to ask all the students what their requests were for the class, wrote them down, then consistenly referred back to them over the course of the semester. Highly Recommend.
Prof. Erina is amazing. She really cares about her students and it shows. Her marking guide is always clear and every assignment rubric is analysed in class along with examples. Discussion heavy - which is nice for your own assignments. Lots of readings, but its an English class. All in all, Prof. Erina makes it easy to enjoy English class.
Prof. Harris was really fantastic. She's incredibly kind, respectful of her students, and open to accommodating to her students' needs. For one of our novel studies I had used a pdf online and was about to be screwed for the assignment, so she lent me her own copy of the book (notes and all) just so that I could cite it. gives thorough feedback too
Professor Erina was absolutely amazing! She was a gem and a very caring prof. She encouraged class discussion and was always making sure it was a welcoming environment, even for quieter classmates. She gave excellent feedback on assignments and was always available on email for help and guidance. You won't find a better English Prof!
She is an amazing professor who really cares about your well-being. Does not assign too much, usually just some readings, and even if you did not get a chance to read she does in class discussion where you can get caught up. Assignments are not hard and she explains them very well in class. Is very quick to respond to questions via email.
Because Prof Harris grades on participation, she ensures that her classroom atmosphere is inviting so that everyone feels comfortable enough to voice their opinion. She maintained her expectations, and the expectations we created as a class, throughout the semester. She has a unique way of teaching and I was very lucky to have enrolled in her class
I have never seen a professor care more about their students than Prof. Erina does! She has a clear passion for both teaching and English. The essay breakdown she does was very valuable, and the reading choices and class discussions were always fascinating and relevant! She also gives great feedback on assignments! I highly recommend her class.
Best professor I could have asked for in my first year of university. Professor Harris gives amazing feedback and makes sure each student is doing well and understands the material. Her lectures are very interactive and she makes sure to cover all the bases. I looked forward to her class and became more confident in my writing with her help.
Great professor who knows how to engage students with the material during lectures. Lots of class discussions that really helped make the topics of the course clearer without being boring or repetitive.
Dr. Harris is a world-class, transformative pedagogue. I am in Education: in awe that she nurtures and challenges EVERYONE AT ONCE (ESL students, Intro. students, Advanced students). She makes even indifferent students want to to good work. A pioneer: feminist and decolonial pedagogy - respect rather than fear.
An awesome professor that makes class both enjoyably and discussions less intimidating. She will make sure you walk out of her class with a better grasp of her subject
Amazing prof. AND when COVID happened, she was THE ONLY PROFESSOR who communicated regularly with us students out of all of my teachers. It helped with homework and to also keep us sane.
Like students have said: great for scholarly and creative writing. BUT they forgot to add how unearthly she is. LIke a good queen (but not too good) from Alice in Wonderland. Or a character in a Tim Burton movie. Or a Fellini movie.
I thank Prof. Erina because when COVID hit we all got anxious. She totally re-wrote the course for online. She made a helpful reading-guide for reading Toni Morrisons novel SULA. And she then made all new assignments. And she totally re-designed the final assignment. She was there for us.
Professor Harris was the most caring and helpful professor I've have ever had. She is a fair marker and always gives great feedback on what you can do to improve your grade. She also chooses great pieces of literature that I actually wanted to study. I didn't think an English class could be so fun and interesting until I had Professor Harris.
I have Prof. Erina for Creative Writing (Non-Fiction WRITE 498). She is the best writing teacher ever. The reading materials are amazing and genre-bending. We read and discuss intensely and she gives unbelievably detailed professional feedback. My writing is improving so much. She is brilliant and works hard to help us improve. Totally rigorous.
Creative Writing (nonfiction). She gives visionary editorial suggestions. I don't know how she does it. I get her critique and find I have more to think about and learn and tons to do to develop what she calls the Urgency of the work but instead of making me feel overwhelmed or untalented she makes me feel totally inspired to keep writing.
(Creative Writing Nonfiction). Erina treats teaching like a serious craft. Just like her writing and just like she treats our writing. She reads like an artist and no one could teach you that. That is years of writing and being an artist. I did not know what my poem was "about" until she read it. Unbelievable.
(Creative Writing). Took years of creative writing courses but Erina is the first to teach actual !%^%^%&*%^^%!!! writing. She is like Babette in Babette's Feast movie, teaches and writes because it has meaning. Maybe spiritual but non-denominational. Modest and self-effacing. Then you research her omigawd so accomplished but never relies on that.
Yo she is the bomb.
Prof. Harris is a genius creative writing teacher and editor. I am non binary and have some mental health challenges and she empathized professionally by knowing all about it and even having reading suggestions. Coolest prof at UA.
I posted something but it got taken down - sorry - I can totally change the wording! I said "teaches Indigenous texts great for a settler." Please keep this posted for my Neechie friends. To reword, I am Indigenous and suspicious of white teachers. She taught Indigenous writing great and even taught me about TRC and resources. Trustworthy.
I just had my first class with Professor Erina for Intro and I didn't want to even go but I am already smitten and can't wait for the second class next week.
Just had class two for Intro to Poetry Writing. I don't know if I will pursue English or writing but she makes me feel like it is possible. She knows so much about poetry and loves it and gets excited when we talk and even when we disagree with her. She is really unusual so I looked her up here. I never wanted to talk in class before.
Awesome!
English class at 8 am 2x a week is bs. But a month in and I cant believe I look forward to this class! I guess it is to make us better writers. I never had a teacher like her, she is real and smart not snobby. She said something funny. Trying to help us "engage complexity" and said we can write "polysemy" on her tombstone. Love it. Take her.
Dr. Erina Harris is amazing.
Erina is one of the most caring, funniest prof I had. She wasn't super serious so it felt like she was a friend. Also replies to emails super fast and helps in any way she can. Assignments are pretty straight forward, but she is a tough marker.
She is hands down one of the best English profs out there. Having a prof that is so down to earth and caring really helps ease the stress of university. Her class is fun and she encourages you to reach out to her for help on assignments! Also one of the few profs that will get to know you and take the time to ask you how you are! (:
Prof Erina is incredible. A hard marker but she knows what she's doing, always had the most energy at 8 am in the morning. Gave great feedback on assignments and was always accessible by email...she literally emailed me back at four in the morning lol. Honestly so amazing, everything about her cancels out the hard marking.
What a great class, and such a kind prof! Erina is really such a beautiful, kind, and intelligent soul. She was so generous and thoughtful throughout workshops but also pushed us to be our best and her grading was fair. She was honestly such a delight and I'll cherish this class for a long time.
Prof. Erina's class was absolutely delightful. She leads group discussions in a way that makes you comfortable to speak about whatever opinion you may have, and she's a wonderful person as well. She's a tough grader, however her feedback is very detailed and clear, and I've come out as a better writer.
Dr. Harris is supportive in class and outside of class (replied vv fast). This class will quickly be *THAT* class of which you are most anticipating and excited for every week. Dr. Harris provided a LOT of feedback and advice before submitting an assignment AND after in her grading. 10/10 would recommend to my homies, and would def take again!!!
Erina is SUCH an engaging prof. This was by far my favourite class in university thanks to the love and care she put into our discussions, workshops, and feedback. No matter what your comfort level is with writing poetry, I would absolutely recommend giving Erina the chance to help you improve it.
Dr. Harris is a phenomenal professor and is incredibly savvy of all things writing. This plus her positive and enthusiastic attitude made her an absolute joy to learn from. I looked forward to class each week and very much value what I took away from my time with her. Highly, highly recommend to anyone hoping to explore poetry and be inspired.
Best professor I've ever had!! I'm not much of an English person, nor am I in the faculty of arts, but out of all of my classes this semester, her class was my absolute favourite. She is so respectable and inspiring. She's a poet and has published real poems which I think is so cool!!! I will 100% remember her class!
Having had her for English 102 makes me want to take higher-level English classes just so I can take another one of her classes!
Erina is absolutely amazing, she is so lovely and respectful during class discussions, marks fairly, gives good feedback, and chooses really interesting readings (in my class we read Sula, which I would highly recommend!). She clearly cares about all of her students, she even brought prizes and treats for us for halloween!!! Love her
Lots of the content was about s*x, but if you can get past that and be mature the class was great. She genuinely cares about the students and wants you to succeed and she'll help you to do well if you ask. She also really appreciations class participation.
Social themes in readings that are contemporary like gender and and race and difference. If you work your writing will improve a lot because she gives tons of editorial support. That last person noticed themes of sexuality in the books but it is not a central theme. (normal for humanities classes that study books that study life). Great prof.
PROF ERINA HAS MY HEART. One of the best English profs I've ever had. She cares abt you even if you hate English. Actually. She's very accessible, esp with emails because she helps any students who need it for important graded assignments. She cares abt your life too which is rare. Super sweet
Her new Toys theme class. So far so good! She said she'll increase our familiarity with theory as in "looking glasses." Texts look amazing! Different genres and media. I like how she can speak on any subject with intelligence and without notes. She even asked what we want to learn and study! Everything about this course feels like a work of art.
I had to take this course. It is a fair amount of work which was frustrating but that is not the professor's fault. If you have to take this take it with Prof Harris because she is awesome, fair and will explain everything. She knows her stuff so she can tell when I didn't try. You do need to go to class. It is interesting if you open up a bit.
I am a writer and took her senior creative nonfiction class. It was profound. I learned about new forms and diverse (non-white and also disabled) writers and so many new skills. I think about form a lot now. I still look back at all her notes and the readings. Months later! She is invested and is still making me a better writer.
This Poetry Workshop was during my final semester. Best course I took in my whole degree.
Prof. Harris was very accommodating, chose interesting stories to analyze, and was funny.
Gosh, this woman is brilliant. Dr. Harris does a lot of work for every class (even if we do presentations). A higher calibre of discussion than my other classes and I am learning a lot. New to theory so I appreciate that we use it in terms of relevance ( = empowering). She makes sure we take the time to marvel at beautiful writing. Fantastic.
No better teacher/mentor for creative writing. An authentic and brilliant person who challenges you while preparing you for it. She knows technique, concept (theory) and recognizes politics in texts and forms. Genuinely committed to teaching ethically. Expect to work and to be held accountable. Gently dark sense of humour. She is the real thing.
A reflection on this course and Dr. Erina; I am realizing that she teaches in a manner different from my other teachers. It took some getting used to because she asks us to invest and take initiative. I am becoming more accountable for my ideas. IN other classes we can disappear but she asks us to be present. She is too. This is really amazing.
She is great! "Not Today!" LOL! (Take a course with her and you will know what this means)!
You really get what you put in in this class. Dr. Harris fosters critical thinking and made me want to work harder. I just wrote the best paper I have written in all my university courses after she edited my first assignment. It is true her feedback was very detailed and intense at first but when I focussed it helped me reach a new level.
Dr. Harris is the most exacting editor I have had so far.
On Friday we had the big Sula class discussion like a competition against Dr. Harris. That was the most fun I have ever had in an English class and I wouldnt have dreamed talking about literature would be so cool.
yesterday Dr. Harris had made a huge powerpoint for second last class. however, the pc rejected her drive. she paused ... then lectured with no notes (online images about play, transgression, performance studies). she had the whole thing in her head anyway! ! blew me away. loved learning about diogenes, the baroness, kent monkman. take this class.
I had been finding academia disappointing and hurtful. Profs ignore emails & questions, grade without criteria & little instruction... then reward our mirroring of their opinions. Dr. Harris is the opposite! Explains expectations and pedagogy, responsive, kind, inspires us to grow, is both intellectual and artistic. Highest recommendation.
Very unique class. The texts and media are captivating. Prof. Harris knows how to teach writing and models how to engage ideas in a significant way. It is called "seminar style" so we were asked to ramp up our writing and presentation skills, and then to really own our ideas. Both professor and course are spectacular.
For English 102 I learned a lot. Plus I've never had a teacher who looks so happy to see us and gives so much assistance.
Professor Harris was the best English teacher/professor I've ever had. She has an amazing way of directing class discussions towards conclusions that she emphasizes throughout each piece of literature. Lots of readings, but if you invest yourself in them then they are interesting. She gives amazing feedback on each assignment and is sooo caring.
Prof Erina is amazing. She understands that this course is mainly taken because of necessity not desire and makes it engaging for all students. She is very understanding, and responds instantly to emails which I absolutely loved. I was always excited to go to class. Her final was very writing heavy though which was not my favourite.
I agree if you have to take this take it with Prof. Harris. But beware the dept. has a tough grading standard which sucks and its a mandatory course . But hey don't shoot the messenger she teaches well & I've never had a teacher this helpful. She treated everyone with respect like equal people with valid ideas. ("Not today!" ha ha).
409/"Toys" was new this semester however I think she'll teach it again. This will become the classic **must take** course for all English Majors not only b/c the texts are incredible (hadn't heard of many and I'm an avid reader) but b/c of how she teaches. She'll help you catch up & push you waaay forwards individually. You don't want to miss this.
Summer session is lots of work, like one assignment a week sometimes. You have to attend and talk a bit and do the readings but it's getting way more interesting a few weeks in. Can't say summer courses are my fave but I'm so happy I'm taking this with Dr. Harris. She is so patient with helping me edit and is philosophical. No regrets
Yeah me too. I thought I was going to hate taking a summer course. It is lots of work and challenging. Some of the poems were boring until we talk about them and then it is all pretty inspiring. This teacher is incredible.
Ditto! I can see my writing improving because she is patient and clear. Btw she is one of the most, or maybe the most interculturally informed white teachers I have had. Super cool course. Dr. Harris is charismatic and kind. You can tell she actually wants to teach us something useful.
Prof. Erina Harris is a gem of a teacher. Her clear, engaging lectures make complex topics a breeze. Her benevolence shines through in thoughtful gestures and prompt email replies. A mentor who truly cares and guides.
She was simply the best, incredibly accommodating and super helpful with everything. Made me absolutely love this course, even if I didn't like some of the readings. You will come out of this class having learnt a LOT of awesome things. Make an effort to participate and everything will get much easier :)
She respects all ideas and truly cares for her students. Attendance is a must! However, she is a tough grader. She nitpicks all the small details so be prepared to revise your submission at least three times. Be prepared for the final exam; she does give hints but make sure you know the key themes and ideas of texts!
For a decent grade, do the work but that's prob true of all classes . She turned a course I dreaded into a delight. Detailed feedback? Understatement LOL! She gives tons of office hours help. Since we talk about "diction" in class LOL "nitpicky" does her kindness a disservice. "Meticulous" is prob more accurate b/c she's interested and encouraging.
It's true she doesn't tell us themes but for every text we study the historical era and politics of literary genres. Overall we study gender, colonialism, intersectionality, economics, violence, xenophobia and beauty.Cant imagine finding it insubstantial unless you want a teacher who just tells you what things mean. If so, don't take her :)
Fantastic class! Challenging if you're not a good writer but she will helped me a lot. Cool stories and informative. First we all research broad "dominant ideologies" for each time periods, then we studied a specific poem/story for each one that was usually an inspiring minority voice. I learned how to research and analyze precisely. Recommended.
She was a super sweet prof, just marked a little harsh and the lectures were sometimes super dry and felt unnecessary
I'm on the Wait List for her poetry workshop next sem. b/c people keep saying she's lifechanging. I wanted to post Re: her public talk for students last week. Inspiring feminist lecture on monsters + writing (for Engl. they're typically male). She discussed colonized imaginations and academia, Indigenous sources, & she even shared student writing.
We all started out kind of tentative for this Intro Poetry Workshop because only a few of us read and write regularly. Now at the end we are all giving substantial insights to one another. She really gets the best out of us. She has passion for language and profound care for student and our work. So glad I took this with Prof. Erina.
Awesome poetry workshop! Last class tonight + a reading salon. Then she read a poem made with lines from all our poems and it made me cry. I learned a lot. It helped my confidence due to her teaching us how to help each other improve. Gives brilliant comments.
Do yourself the pleasure of taking a class with Dr.Harris in your University career. That is to say: I have never met such a cool, lovely and intelligent professor. She genuinely cares about improving your writing and pushes you to do better. The topics we discuss in class are always so enticing.
This class was so amazing and very interesting. Professor Erina is so kind and very helpful. She was very easy to talk to when needing help for papers and always gave very helpful feedback. Highly recommend taking any of her classes. She has been one of my favourite professors.
For intermediate poetry workshop, she knows your poem by heart by the time we workshop you. Many times she could tell what someone's poem was about even if the class couldn't. We learn to transform writing beyond personal feelings, into art. If you care about writing you'll grow! We studied Layli Long Soldier too. Overall a profound experience.
Good books? Wild! Critical thinking? Absolutely. Supportive? No prof has given this much time to help my writing. Diverse? The bipoc/queer/disabled themes are integrated not tokenized. Tough grader? I mean...I wish I got a higher grade ---but now I agree with all her edits haha! Interesting person and spooky smart. Fave course of my entire degree.
Dr. Harris will literally guide you through this course. Excellent set-up of texts, lectures, and assignments. Extremely accessible outside of class, and willing to work with you rather than leave you to your own devices. On top of that, she is a genuine, caring, and funny person. PARTICIPATE in class and Dr. Harris will make it worthwhile.
The books and art and film (translations too) assigned amazed me. She's an elegant facilitator, a unique combination of contagious playfulness and then deeply serious and v. political. You won't believe how well she treats students. It's true she says at least one brilliant thing every class. Takes attendance v. seriously. How education should be.
What an amazing professor. Not just incredibly intelligent but also very articulate and funny and sharp. Anyone who takes her class should consider themselves lucky to have such a wonderful professor.
Third class I took with Dr. Erina, Advanced poetry was the best course of my undergrad. I've learned tons about the artistic process and writing. She's brilliant, mentored my poetry to a new level so now my earlier work looks kind of embarrassing lol. An absolutely unique instructor.
Coolest class and prof.
I just loved intro poetry with Dr. Erina. I write mostly fiction but I took poetry b/c everyone said I'd learn tons for my writing from her and she's awesome. She is and I actually liked the poetry! As a BIPOC writer, I appreciated that it was from different cultures and styles. I'm more confident as a person now b/c of her workshops.
Take intro poetry with Dr. Erina if you're serious about writing. Could prob take it just for fun cause she did some exercises for the songwriters & fiction people too- but know she takes writing v seriously. A fair amount of work. I learned loads from her. "Specificity" will mean so much by the end of term.
Engrossing class, enchanting prof.
Fascinating intro poetry course. Amazing teacher. I'm going to take anything she teaches.
All the nonfiction we read was awesome - journalism, hermit crab essays, lots of political essays, some unusual artsy works too. helpful course. Very inspiring.
She's lovely and brilliant. Take her course if you can.
She said at the beginning that the course is like an odyssey and that we'd come out the end somewhere different then we began. Now at the end I agree. The proffessor and this course should be called "a transformative experience." You'll get way more out of it if you talk in workshop and try hard when it comes to doing your writing.
I took this class over the summer of 2023 and it has been so helpful. Whether you're a scientific paper or just another English essay, Dr. Harris will surely improve your writing. Something in her lectures will interest you and stick with you throughout your university career! Bonus, she is a caring prof and will provide a lot of helpful feedback.
Feedback was always dense but must have sunk in coz I applied the elements of pacing and empathy she taught for a cover letter. I remembered to make it a more specific story no generalizations. Got into my new program! Tbh, didn't expect a creative writing course to affect my other writing endeavors as much as this did for me.
Hadn't bargained for how much work summer semester is but she was honest from day 1. Brutal! She's helpful and big on respect. Poems are dry until we look at how authors encode subversive politics in them. The novel Sula's fascinating. Won't take a summer course again but I'd take her again for sure. It's helping my writing plus she's wonderful.
Love this course with Dr. Harris. I like some readings more than others, I really enjoyed Sula. She's super skilled at drawing out different people's interpretations and it's awesome to hear what everyone thinks. Tough grader yet the comments she makes for each of us for every assignment have helped me refine my writing. Participation is a must.
Dr. Harris is a wonderful professor who cares about her students. The course was easy to follow, and homework was outlined clearly. Assignments were manageable and feedback given was very detailed and thorough. Great course to practice talking in class. Overall, a great professor. Would definitely recommend taking her course!
Very good for anxious people; everything we went over in a lecture was noted on the schedule so you know exactly what will be asked in advance and there was ample time to prepare. Dr. Harris is super sweet and GENUINELY open to all perspectives. She will never tell you your perspective on a work is wrong so long as you can back it up!
Dr. Harris is a phenomenal prof. 102 sounded awful - 'writing skills and analysis.' Thankfully discussions were so compelling. The books studied were a sustained critique of colonialism through art -- a few honestly took my breath away. Her encouragement actually means something and by the end I even wanted to talk in class. Sad it's over.
Dr. Harris's an expert in her field and an effective TEACHER. She doesn't just talk at us. As a KIN student I avoid Engl yet learned and enjoyed this since she made it relevant. Assignments are useful. She's organized, supportive, current. She's the best teacher I've ever had. Her fascinating mind will compel you.
I've never had a prof quite like her. She gives amazing edits and she'll make you a killer personal reading list. What unsuppressible creativity and joyousness.
Holy Cr**p she gives a lot of written comments on the homework. Not a big fan of english classes but she's very interesting and the stories are odd, fairly cool. Will most def help improve my writing
You must be ready to forget all about ever other class you have. As she expects university level right out of the gate.
Love this course. Toys theme's relatable and books are diverse. Fair marking and we practiced everything in the research log before we got graded. Workload reasonable plus you get tons of feedback. Dr. Harris's compassion and intelligence inspired me to make my own essay topic on my culture (even if harder) . She wants you to succeed. My best prof
This class was superb! Amazing theme of politics of toys. I loved the readings like Deaf Rebublic and Paper Menagerie. It was also amazing when Ekti Cardinal taught us about Cree dolls. This prof goes over and above to help. She answers emails in a day and gave papers back in a week and she's super smart.
My favourite class! She's a singularly engaging professor. I was able to grow in my writing because she & my peers were so nurturing. Moreover we're not graded until we first got to build confidence. I cherish how she encouraged me to honour my culture (non western) in my writing. I'll remember "be specific" forever because it's a political act.
You can try really hard and still end up with bad grades, the workload is also a lot.
Poetry workshop was wonderful and made me a better writer. The readings opened my mind. I loved how we could write on anything, just respect the boundaries we made as a class, like triggers. I found her grading super fair and clear its marked on learnig skills not how personal it is or politics. I hope to take intermediate with her next!
Despite the strenuous workload, you are definitely rewarded for your hardwork. She is also the nicest prof you will ever meet. She's open to many interpretations of texts and won't immediately shoot you down for sharing your ideas (a seemingly rare quality LA teachers share).
This class was an absolute joy to take! I loved the setup, and the way that Erina's workshop functions is truly a treat to be apart of. The assignments are easy, and as long as you can read and follow instructions, you'll do just fine!
Dr. Harris's feedback is out of this world. I'm reaching new levels in my writing and in my thinking. I love how she curates our nonfiction workshops to be so collaborative. A very humane and creative teacher.
Goat of all time.
Dr. Harris is is so encouraging, she really cares. This class is A LOT of work and attendance is absolutely mandatory, but Dr. Harris is upfront about that. Be ready to share your work with all of your classmates, if thats not your thing this is not the class for you. Most of the grade is based on portfolio at the end, which is around 100 pages.
Absolutely lovely Prof. I will miss her so much.
If she likes you as a person you are good if not you will be unfairly graded.
You'll get what you put in and it pays off with the line by line feedback you get! So far strongest prof and most engaging class in my 2 years here. She'll work with the class to get a handle on how to critique peers with an approach that's thoughtful, not just personal tastes.
I was a bit worried about the workload but decided to take this in Spring semester. I'm so in love with this course.
The most fascinating class. Brilliant teacher.
There's only one word for this course and it is... MAGICAL
Goat. I'll never forget this brilliant writing course I took this summer. I'm indebted to this class, and my helpful peers in it.
She gives super in-depth and helpful feedback, but isn't a tough grader. Very understanding and takes the time to get to know her students. She makes you work, but it's so worth it. Loved her
For summer Nonfiction I appreciated readings in so many styles and I still read that Pigs essay by the advanced student. Dr Harris is a talented teacher who presented skills to develop that I found achievable. She sets the tone of utmost respect. She's increadibly accommodating which will make you comfortable to learn and create.
Great prof, she is caring, gives excellent feedback, and is supportive. It is essential to know that this course involves a lot of writing and organizing, and is very heavy. I took it in the Summer and really enjoyed it. Keep up with your writing as scheduled; if you fall behind, you will struggle significantly. Graded for the effort you put in.
I had a ball. It's impressive how much I learned in summer. I think it had so much to do with her teaching and the diverse texts. If you care about writing take this prof! She's like if Oscar Wilde and Wednesday Adams and Joan Jett had a baby with Gertrude Stein as the nanny. I'll take more classes with her for sure.
Dr. Erina's very knowledgeable. Her personality sparkles and I always look forward to class. She'll help you work on the final essay too. I'd never thought much about how disabled characters were represented in stories and movies before.
Dr. Harris is a great professor and really engages with the material given in class. She gives great feedback on assignments and clearly advises on what to improve on. There is around an hour of homework you have to do after every class, and it takes a while to read everything. Overall, she's a good prof
I recommend taking this prof if you have to take this. It's a pretty good intro to uni level writing and research that's more complex. Such a fun, unexpected field of study. Toys! What I loved most was this prof and the beautiful stories, and how philosophical the discussions get. She's super helpful and kind.
Exceptional. You could tell it was designed carefully, we did it all in stages that kept building: reading, documenting then research. All while writing and talking about unique stories in political contexts. Super helpful course. amazing in the last class when we all introduced our toys and politics topics she remembered everybody's thesis.
Wow! Seriously the best class.
My grade doesn't reflect Dr. Harris's ability to teach and is rather a reflection of my efforts due to unfortunate factors that impacted me this semester. Dr. Harris is an absolutely lovely instructor with so much passion and knowledge for what she does. Her grading is on the tougher end, but she is very kind and offers amazing feedback.
The course topic was super interesting professor was caring but there were just way too much homework. Students are expected to spent at least 2 hours after each class to complete journal entries that requires you to read 20 pages. Also apparently for concluding paragraph we have to write completely new ideas instead of concluding.
She's a really kind and approachable person, but definitely a tough grader. She also expected university-level writing right from the start, despite it being our first semester in university and many of us were just coming out of high school. There were a lot of readings as well, and her standards were quite high. But, she cares about her students
She's fabulous. I had her for 102 + 103 writing skills. For sure 102 + 103 classes are heavy but Dr Harris gave fun readings + they're short. Don't worry she won't really expect university standards right away. We got taught first, then practice everything before she graded. She's supportive. I loved discussions and choosing topics.
