He is ridiculous. The class averages on the first 4 quizes were failing. He hasseled them until he decided to give us bonus points for doing homework. He was a jerk so we had to go to the dean. After that he was a bit more helpful and scaled the hell out of the class so we all did ok.
Easy on the grading. Tons of partial credit (until the final exam). However despite all of that you don't learn a whole lot. He does alot of theory stuff and not much of actually conveying the material itself. Ended up with a B even though i bombed the final. As mentioned before he's grading helps you have a nice cushion before final exam.
Nane is very nice professor and glad to help my study~~~ he is really very nice ~~ and generous on final grade~~
Nane's teachin style is really confusing and hard to follow. If he doesn't think you understand he will just move onto another problem. His grading scale is different than other classes, for example an A is from an 85-100, a B is from 70-84, and a C is from 55-69. This helped me get a B in his class.
He is the best teacher.
I personally strongly disagree with taking this man's class. He is the worst instructor I have ever seen. Waste of time!!!
I like this professor and his teaching. Very helpful.
Not very good at teaching and hard to understand. Not very helpful when you try to get him to reexplain a problem.
In class he teaches theory and does little to no examples. However, his tests and quizzes involve no theory what so ever. He makes his quizzes/tests impossible to finish in the allotted time. Though he is not the best professor, he is a very nice person.
If you have to take Probability and Statistics or Linear Algebra, you can't go wrong with Dr. Nane. I've had him twice now and he is one of the better professors. He is a little tricky to understand with his accent, but he teaches straight from the book and provides his lecture notes online. Doing the homework is a must!Adjusted grading scale helps
Prof. Nane is Turkish, so his accent takes some getting used to. If you haven't taken Calculus before, you will probably struggle in this class (as you probably will in most math classes at Auburn). Doing the WebAssign homework is vital to success in this class because he pulls questions from it for the tests. He takes attendance occasionally.
Make time for all of his homework and it is a lot, but his tests are exactly from homework. He is turkish and you can't really understand what he says, especially if you sit in the back of the class. I spent most of the year despising him, but he is a good grader and finds partial credit when he can. 4 test out of 300 not 400, This helps!
I spent the first few weeks trying to decipher his accent before realizing that it didn't matter, because I had calc in high school and could use the webAssign homework as a review. What he goes over in class doesn't necessarily matter, his tests come straight from WebAssign, so learn from that. Let us create formula sheets to bring to exams.
Run-of-the-mill math professor. You'll need the textbook for homework. A word of warning, the difficulty rises pretty significantly after the second exam, don't slack off after it. Not a difficult class besides that.
HORRIBLE TEACHER. I am not very good at math and I would always email him asking what I needed to do differently to do well on the test and he was not helpful at all. I also emailed him right before the final asking what my overall grade was and he told me to calculate it myself. So do not take him if you struggle with calc bc he will not help!!
STAT 3600 is a hard class. I didn't read as much as I should have and just got the homework answers from Chegg, and I got a C for that and didn't learn much. Nane is a really nice guy, but his lectures are pretty confusing as well as his notes which he puts online for you to follow. Best thing is his 15pt grading scale which helps alot (A85-100)
Nane knows the material he teaches well, but that's about all that is going for him. He does not teach the material well and provides little to nothing in terms of resources and material to learn from outside of class. While his grading scale is generous, he is not the best for actually learning a subject well.
A real sweetheart. Cal 3 is sort of difficult, but he tried to make it easier on the tests. As long as you learn the math, you'll be fine.
At times, he is difficult to understand. I like how he gave us the option to take our test on paper instead of online. The WebAssign homework did not always match up with his lessons or style of teaching but was helpful for the tests. He does give partial credit which is nice since the tests have only 10-12 questions.
Dr. Nane tries really hard to make math as easy as possible. He printed out lecture notes for us and did lots of examples in class. Homework was turned in for extra credit and test questions came straight from the homework. He doesn't post anything on canvas so make sure you go to class to know what days tests are on/syllabus updates.
This is one of the worst classes Ive taken at auburn. He does not work problems in class and just expects you to understand what he is saying and then is confused why half of the class is failing. I would never take this professor again
He knows the material well but is not the greatest at giving that knowledge to the students. Lots of homework but test questions are similar. Very generous grade. I was a horrible student in this course but I was given ample make up opportunities and am very thankful for that. If you're taking the class just to take it hes a great choice.
You have to teach yourself literally everything in this class, he doesn't even post lectures. You just learn from the examples in Pearson Mastering. Highly recommend you purchase Chegg Study because you will need it to explain some of the harder topics. Study the homework assignments, the tests are most similar to those. Final is like study guide.
I'm saving you now: DO NOT TAKE STAT2513 online! Just don't do it to yourself unless you want to be teaching yourself a ton of material with no help or guidance. The tests don't line up with the material and I have heard from others who took this class in person that it was an easy A. I had to seriously work for a low B. Don't. do. it.
Dr. Nane is so sweet, but this class killed me. His quizzes are actually tests and he is a TOUGH grader. He is so smart and so passionate about what he does, but if you are just getting through this class bc you're in engineering or something else, you will probably struggle. If you are a math major you'd probably like him a lot! DO THE HW! 10% EC
Dr. Nane was one of the worst math professors I have ever had. Linear algebra is not as easy as you think. I basically had to teach myself and the grader was unfair. He is a nice guy but does not know how to teach. DO THE HOMEWORK! The homework is 10% bonus on your final grade!
Nane was the only professor for online Cal 2 this summer. He has videos on canvas that are no help whatsoever. They are just him reciting the book. Homework and tests are on WebAssign and they are proctored. Classic example of the homework being easier than the test. If everyone in the class fails the test... you know who's to blame...
Just goes over slides and doesn't reach well. Gives hardest possible test questions
This man could care less. He had to curve the class after the first test because only 7 people passed. Youtube will have to teach you the material because he won't. He reads straight from the book, doesn't explain his work, and won't tell you what problems are on the test or give you a study guide; just says, "read the book." Hard to understand
DO NOT take this class! even if it means waiting a semester! His lectures are literal recitations of the book, gives very little partial credit, his emails are cryptic and sassy. He does not belong in any inperson or online classroom. Most stressful class ever. The only reason I passed is because he recognizes his incompetence & has a crazy scale.
Dr. Nane was a blessing. He is the greatest teacher of all time. Seeing his smile through the zoom call just brightens my day. I love calculus and a challenge. Dr. Nane's problems challenge me to think outside the box. He is a brilliant professor and an even better leader. Kachow.
Doesnt teach us anything, absurdly difficult tests and I really dont think he cares if we fail.
He should not be allowed to teach. He doesn't now how. You will only learn from recitation. Homework questions are tough, but manageable. Exam questions require a PhD. Exam 1 was 50% higher than average because of cheaters. Exam 2 was on incredibly simple concepts. Had no issues with HW and tutored other students. Scored a 0. Class average was a 7.
worst professor I've ever had. He speeds through his lectures, which have turned into him just reading from a textbook. The tests are significantly harder than anything discussed in class or on the homework. The most recent test had a class average of 17% and he appeared to not care in the slightest. I would avoid his classes at all costs.
Dr. Nane is a brilliant man, but he is a terrible teacher. He only has three tests and the final alongside homework for grading. He reads straight off the slides and mumbles through problems expecting everyone to understand what's going on already. His graders also gave very little partial credit on tests.
Last semester calc 2 got a huge curve. This year he curved 2 points. He said attendance would be worth something - it wasn't. I never missed class and had a 67. I needed a 68 for a C and he wouldn't give it to me. I had a 99 HW average and was tutoring students. His tests wrecked me. I now have to retake. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. This is self teaching.
Like others have said, this will be a difficult course. You need a good TA or a tutor to pass. You won't get anything from the lecture. Most of the class got a D or below and he only curved 2 points before submitting grades. After a respectful discussion, he increased the grading scale 12pts saving many. He does care, but he is also not the best.
Be prepared to do A LOT of teaching yourself. If he ever hints at something in lecture that was not on the homework, study the mess out of it.
Dr. Erkan Nane is the smartest mathematician I have ever seen. Awesome personality!
Dr. Nane is hard to understand at times but he really wants you to succeed. If you ask for help he will try his best. His grading scale is great because you can get an A with an 85%. Stats is a hard class but if you do the homework and understand it you"ll get an A because tests are just like the homework with different numbers.
This class is inherently difficult but Professor Nane really did his best to help all the students pass. Tests were pretty difficult, but he was generous with curving especially towards the end of the semester. He even gave students the opportunity to replace lower test grades in order to help people pass the class.
This was probably the worst course that I have ever taken. I made an A, but the class was a trainwreck. If you are unfortunate enough to take this class, my advice is to skip the lectures. I stopped going after the first test, and my grade only improved. Memorize every hw problem, bs some work on tests for every problem, and there is a huge curve.
I had a good experience. Teaches straight from the book and gives tests that are taken from the homework. Math isn't a spectator sport. If you listen to lectures/read through the book and understand homework assigned, it's not difficult to do well in class.
He is really sweet but he does not know what he is doing. He is also hard to understand because of his accent. The homework he assigns can take hours to complete and he gives 2 or 3 of these a week. It is possible to make a good grade in his class but the effort to do so, when you could just find a better teacher instead, is too much work.
He is a sweet man, but i have no idea what he is talking about. he scribbles out things as he writes and goes back to correct and to fix and to work out on different spots, its basically incomprehensible. he also has a microphone but no idea how to use it so he went back and forth between blowing into it and mumbling
This is by far the worst teacher I've had in my life. I would give a 0 if I could. He doesn't actually teach anything and the notes are nothing like the homework. He claims that the tests are from the homework but that is just not true. Unless you understand everything perfectly you're screwed.
This professor is very hard to understand. He mumbles in the corner to himself and does not answer questions directly when you ask him. Tests are usually usually 6 or 8 questions which makes it very hard to do well if you miss one. Weekly web-assign quiz's due on Sundays, sometimes 4 at a time.
taught myself everything. lectures not like tests at all. memorized 50+ hw problems for tests and still struggled. he's a sweet guy which makes it hard for me to not like him, but he just makes this class so difficult. i never went to lectures because they were so unhelpful, just studied/did homework/taught myself on my own. nothing like AP Stats!!
Professor Nane is difficult to understand in class. Most of the students in my class struggle. The final grade is curved and he has to curve every exam because so many people do so bad.
Semi boring lectures but he is fair and if everyone bombs a test he scales it. He scaled 2 out of 4 of our tests and drops your lowest test grade for your final grade. Not bad of a professor but you have to be ready to do your part. Its easy to blame the professor when they teach hard material.
Professor Nane gets a bad rap but he is a super nice guy and curves tests and the final like crazy. He is somewhat difficult to understand and his class is self taught for the most part. But I think people dislike him because the material is just hard in general. If you do the homework and go to lecture this class is very passable.
Mr Nane seems like a nice person but the way he runs this class makes me want to die. He teaches directly from a textbook that couldn't be worse if it tried, he's difficult to understand, and his homework is longer than the Bible. The only redeeming factor about him is that his tests aren't too hard and you can make a 40 overall and still have a D.
Exams come straight from the homework. this class is not a nothing class but he does what he can to work examples to help you understand. homework is very long. grades on a 15 point scale.
Just don't take him if you want to learn statistic properly. All he did was mumbling during the entire lecture. Lots of homework, like 10+ problems in the book on average per section. Exam difficulty is really inconsistent, and the homework is the only material you can use to study for it. Highly not recommended.
He seems like a really nice guy, but a terrible teacher. He mumbles and you can barely hear or understand him, even if you sit in the front. The way he explains things makes them seem way more difficult than they actually are. Do yourself a favor and take someone else
Erkan Nane does not need to be teaching. You can barely understand his lectures and when you ask him to explain something his typical response is "because it is the correct one" or "because the other is wrong". Attendance counts. Homework is next to impossible. I am a very strong math student (A in calculus) but am barely passing statistics.
Dr. Nane means well but goodness gracious you can barely understand him because he mumbles! I did not have the strongest background in calculus (freshman year me's fault) but I know combinatorics like the back of my hand and even the discrete portion of the stats class was hard. Just avoid him because his linguistics render lectures utterly useless
I had Dr. Nane for STAT2510. He is a very sweet man, however, he is one of the worst math instructors I have ever had. I am a hard worker, and a strong math and science student, and a math science major. He does not need to be teaching.
Dr. Nane is great. It's hard material. What else do you want. Do the HW problems EVERYday. Don't stress about the proof problems. Go to office hours. Don't skip class. Brush up on calculus EARLY in the semester before chapter 3. Chapter 1 and 2 are not so hard but after that it becomes difficult FAST. Use the time early in the semester preparing.
Extremely kind person & dropped our lowest exam grade to help our averages, but he would not have had to do that if he was a better lecturer. He just reads powerpoints and types into a software rather than explaining. Another professors videos got me a B. Attendance is taken, 80% participation can do extra credit, it saved my grade, so go to class!
Absolutely the worst "professor". It should be criminal to employ this man in academia. He doesn't care about students and he simply cannot teach. He seems genuine and kind, but he's a nightmare. The semester before mine he curved 40 points, the semester after mine he dropped the two lowest test grades, my semester - no curve, sub 20 class average.
I would give him a zero if I could. His handwriting is illegible. He stands in the corner where the podium is and mumbles. Makes you pay for iclicker for participation, but he doesn't factor those points into your grade for the class. Exams are split into 2 parts (concepts/Rstudio). His powerpoints do not help. Don't make the same mistake I did :')
Hard to understand, expects everyone to understand everything without explaining small details.
Worst professor I have had at Auburn. Just changed grading policy halfway through the semester. Has not uploaded any grades in two months. Can not read handwriting. Mumbles and has heavy accent. Is not willing to show details or explain problems. Will not answer questions fully. Barely explains anything and expects you to know coursework before.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! This is the WORST college professor i've ever had. He has the thickest accent and mumbles when he speaks. Test 1 & 2 are doable as you can teach yourself the material. Test 3 is a NIGHTMARE. I could go on and on about this class and teacher. Save yourself the tears and stress and your grade and just take someone else.
Can be hard, but Nane is awesome. I was scared to take him, but I am glad I did. This class is time consuming, attendance is graded, homework can be a lot, but the grading is very generous. Lectures can sometimes be hard to follow. Nane cares a ton about his students, he is one of the most understanding professors I have had. I highly recommend him
I would not recommend taking this professor. He was a nice person, just not a very good teacher. He has a very thick accent and talks very quiet so he is hard to hear and understand in class. He takes grades off of attendance and participation but it barely counts enough to save your grade if you don't do good on the exams which are very difficult.
Probably one of the easiest classes taught at Auburn if you know how to attend class and study every once in a while.
Erkan Nane is a terrible professor. I made an A but I taught myself everything, as he literally cannot teach. He is difficult to understand, he mumbles, and doesn't take the class seriously. He also does not really understand how to work canvas. I only went to class for the attendance.
Decent prof, gives 100s for every hw regardless of correctness. Reused exams for our class. You have to pay 15 bucks in order to get an app for required participation credit, which sucks. Ultimately though, easy class, and a lot of the issues below have been resolved.
Very kind man. Can sometimes be hard to understand, but will always answer questions well and to the best of his ability. Attendace through iClicker and has quizzes, but dropped the lowest 6. Averaged 2/3 tests to replace your lowest, and the final replaced the lowest after that. 70 and up is a B and 85 and higher is an A.
The material was easy but he is hard to understand. I got a D on the first exam, but he ended up dropping it and I got As/Bs on all the others. Understanding what he says and what he means is a learning curve. There are also always in class activities even though attendance isn't mandatory. I would not recommend this class even though he's nice.
If I could give a negative review I would. He is the worst teacher I have ever had. Did not learn a thing. Mumbles in a different language most of the time. I have no idea how he still is employed. Literally put a video for us to answer questions on once in a different language on the board. He is awful. Do not take this class.
Avoid at all costs if you have the unfortunate displeasure of taking his Diff eq class. What a waste of mine and everyone's time he mumbles and you cant understand a word he says. Almost completely in-consist on format for exams. If i could give less stars i would.
Professor Nane is a very kind man, but has a heavy accent and mumbles. English is not his first language and many times he cannot clearly communicate what he is trying to say. This should be a very easy class, but he overcomplicates things and makes the material confusing. I have had to do a lot of outside teaching myself the material.
Worst professor I have ever had in my time at Auburn, he cannot speak clearly to save his life he doesn't teach well at all he mumbles through every lecture he has a thick accent and sounds like he doesn't know what he's talking about. Do not take him.
The absolute worst professor I have EVER taken. Does not respond to emails very quickly and he is very hard to understand. Most of the time he mumbles through his lectures and talks very quietly on top of having a heavy accent. He had learning catalytics that he doesn't mention very often until the end saying he's grading them. DO NOT TAKE HIM
DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!! I am a pre-nursing major so I had to take STAT this semester and he was the only prof available. Test 1/2 were fine. if you study from the practice exams he puts on canvas you'll be fine. But test 3 actually awfu, dropped my grade 5 points. You can barely understand him. Won't even answer questions straight forward.
The best way to improve in this class and to make a good grade is to never take this professor. Tests 1 and 2 were simple, but after those two, the tests get progressively difficult, and the study guides are nothing like the tests.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! He is hard to understand and assumes students already know the material like its common sense. He doesn't know how to communicate the material with students. There's extra credit and you will need it. If you take him you NEED to get a tutor; only reason I made an A is because I got a tutor after failing test 1.
This class was not at all worth my time and effort. I reached out to him multiple times to schedule meetings as I felt I was falling behind and I was told I needed to just pay attention in lectures more. Speaking of lectures you can barely understand him due to a thick accent and speaking softly. His slides also make little to no since.
Erkan Nane taught Linear Diff Eq like he was solving for x in another dimension. Showed up, scribbled hieroglyphics, and left. I got a B but learned more from my microwave clock. ChatGPT was the real prof—Nane just cosplayed as one.
Avoid this class if you can. I learned more from ChatGPT than I did in all of his lectures combined. The teaching was confusing, unorganized, and often left me more lost than when I started. Save yourself the stress, take someone else if you want to actually understand the material.
The only reason I got the grade I did was because I took stats in high school. When I would ask him question's he would either say because that is what the notes say or I don't know. Chat GPT literally had to teach me, and this class made me crash out more times than I can count.
This is the greatest professor that has ever professed, of all the professor's that profess, this guy certainly professes more than anyone. I was once dying of thirst, Professor Nane personally gave me his water bottle and lunch, his lunch was very mediocre but I liked it. 88.
Nane mumbled every single class. I could not understand what he was saying except for his rants about AI. He had very low test averages and then got upset, telling us that his lectures were enough for us to learn. I had a tutor, joined study groups, and read the textbook but even that wasn't enough because his test questions were so unpredictable.
Certainly one of the professors of all time. You will probably have a better understanding not going to the lectures only redemption is that an a is an 85 and a b is a 70
