There are weekly homework and quiz assignments as well as 3 big exams. The exams are a lot harder than the study guides he gives out and a lot of people failed them. He does not explain anything in class and is a very quiet speaker and a small writer. You have to really pay 100% attention to pick up anything. Would not recommend at all.
You'll only do good in this class if you study a lot and have a strong foundation in math from before (the only reason I ended up with an A). He struggles with actually teaching the material and most of the time he talks really quietly. However, he is really kind and wants all his students to pass. I suggest choosing another prof if you're able to.
He's actually very kind and caring, my class isn't that big go around at times to check on his student. One thing I'd say is he's quiet so sometimes the material isn't going through smoothly. But attendance isn't a requirement, and everything you need kinda got posted and the solutions are in his hws.
Professor was very nice but he was quiet. That did not really matter since everything he taught was online to look back at later. He was very clear on his grading criteria, take if you want an easy A.
Professor Kassaye did not seem very confident in the material and would often repeat himself a lot/talk quietly. The class often got irritated or confused easily. However, his tests were pretty straight forward and you could tell he wanted his students to succeed. He was very nice and accessible outside of class and great one-on-one.
Will definitely avoid him for future classes. He is a nice person and will help you out in office hours, but the exams are much harder than the study guides he gives out and he's not very good at actually teaching material. If you want to pass you have to either already know the material or teach it to yourself outside of class.
Prof. Ermias was a good professor, he may be quiet a few times, but overall he is caring and wants his students to succeed. Every Wednesday, there are Collaborative Quizzes that are open-note and since you do it with your peers, it can help you boost your grade. Just do your Hawkes Learning Assignments and you'll be good.
Every week there's Pearson homework (can redo an infinite amount of times) and quizzes (can redo up to 5 times). So far the exams are exactly like the study guides he gives out. If you understand the homework/quizzes/study guides you should get a high grade in the class. It's been easy for me and Prof. Kassaye has been great at answering questions!
I was skeptical taking him initially, but turns out, he's good at what he does. But I will say, if you're not putting in the work on your end, you're not passing the class, don't expect him to hold your hand. He's kind of funny sometimes too.
I read the reviews before I took this class and thought ppl were overreacting, BUT NO. In this class you will have TONS of weekly homework and quizzes - 2 weekly hw with 10/20 questions and 2 weekly quizzes that most of the time the content has nothing to do with the hw. Also, his accent is very hard to understanding and so is his teaching style!
He does not know how to teach math and struggles to go through his own problems without constantly making mistakes. Take a different professor if you want a good grade.
AWFUL. He does not teach the information, homework and quizzes relate nothing to his chapters, and everyone fails the exams. If you have taken calc before, you will probably be fine; however, I have never even gotten a B in college and received a C. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Anyone who gives him a bad score is mad about getting a bad grade. Its Calculus. Its Hard. I'm bad at math and still passed with an A. He's very smart and provides his notes from class. He's quiet so sit in front. His exam reviews are exactly like the real Exams. No surprise questions. He's a good teacher teaching a very hard subject. Take him.
preface: i did have calc experience so it was relatively easy prof kassaye is pretty nice, he is a little quiet so try to sit a little closer, good teaching method goes over notes and examples with the class and tries to get students involved. hw and quizzes are retake-able, final was easy mid term a lil difficult
Go to class and take good notes, don't need to read textbook. He makes occasional mistakes, but if have (pre)calc experience it is trivial. If you are bad at math chose someone else maybe. Very helpful and will answer questions. Lots of hw, but tests are not too bad, do the study guide. SG is honestly harder than tests so prepares you well.
I personally thought he taught the concepts very well but to be fair I also did take calc in High School, however he still teaches in a way way its very simple to understand as long as you do the homework and pay attention in class. There are two easy midterm exams and 1 final. I would definitely recommend him for math 108.
all in all great teacher
Such a Whip smart Professor!!!
Kassaye gives you the resources to pass. I made a silly mistake on an exam and he left me fix it. He structures the class, so you can easily get a B or higher. Understand mathlab 100%, so you can zoom through the exams. Quizzes=5 attempts, practice=unlimited. Both should be an easy 100 and if you get a 75 on each test, thats an 85 in the class.
Took calculus from high school before taking this course, so it was super easy. I can't say whether it'd be easy if I didn't take calculus before. Probably try to avoid him because his way of teaching isn't great. Easy homework and quizzes because it's online and you have multiple attempts. Tests are pretty easy with the study guide.
Overall, one of the best options if you are taking Math 108. Pearson Hw/quizzes, 2 written assignments, 2 midterms, and the final are all worth 20%. Just pay attention to lectures and put some work in the class and you'll finish with an easy C or above.
Good professor. Math 108 was tough for me, but he dropped the four lowest assignments in Pearson and gave us the option to earn extra credit on the first exam. Make sure to study and you'll be fine.
I am the worst at math and barely passed. He explains topics well just really fast. There is weekly homework (takes a minimum of an hour). I wouldn't say not to take him but you have to do some work for a good grade/have prior knowledge. He is caring and funny though. EH overall..His grading isint the hardest though.
Professor Ermias offers enriching learning experience. His outstanding ability to explain complex concepts ensures easily understandable material. The organization and clarity in presenting course content significantly enhance overall learning. Availability and approachability for student assistance contribute to a positive learning environment.

The organization and clarity in course content enhance the overall learning journey. Moreover, his role in developing accessibility and approachability for student aid fosters a positive and supportive environment.
Put in effort and you will do well. He gives you so many opportunities to pass this course. 3 exam. Pearson HW unlimited chances, and 5 attempts on Quiz. Study Guides are helpful
He gave too many chances for us to pass the class, he removed the due dates, rounded up the final grades etc. His lectures isn't the best definitely enough. Practicing before and after class would get you an A.
This class was easier for me because I had prior knowledge of basic calc, if you don't have prior knowledge you might struggle. His lectures are not the best, I self studied most of the material. However he gives a lot of chances to pass, extra credit, take home tests, hw redos, etc. If your willing to put in the extra work to self study, take him.
Prof Kassaye is intelligent, passionate, and well-prepared for class. He demonstrates complex concepts using simple examples, showcasing how he integrates the course naturally. Although I initially thought that calculus would be challenging for me, his approach, coupled with numerous application problems, has fostered my love for calculus.
There are easy weekly assignments and quizes on Pearson, and the prof will give you 1 week grace period for each one. 2 take home written assignments which are very easy. 2 Mid term exams which are 99% similar to his review exam assignments. He's very accessible outside the class. He will help you solve all the questions during his office hrs.
There is homework after every lecture and quizzes fairly often at specific intervals Homework is worth more than the final cumulatively Teacher is nice and willing to work with students to help them
To be honest, his lectures are amazing. His lecture notes are available on Blackboard, and his BB page is very well organized. He provides worksheets for each section and solves the questions thoroughly, showing each step. The solution keys for the lectures and worksheets are also available on BB. Work hard to pass the course. Great professor!
Lectures are very clear, good teacher, the class is pretty straightforward. You'll do fine if you just give a little effort. Study guides are almost exactly what's on the tests, so just do those and your Pearson work and you'll be fine.
You can pass this class if you put in the effort. Everything (weekly quizzes/hw, written assignments, and exams) is 20%, and you get unlimited attempts on hw and 5 attempts on the quizzes. Study his study guides thoroughly and you'll pass the exams. His lectures aren't the best, but you can always email him questions and he will explain it again.
He taught the course with passion and was always ready to help his students. His assistance in the course was very helpful, helping many students grasp some of the concepts. The in-class quizzes made me prepare and encouraged me to study the sections for the quiz. Wonderful professor!
Prof. Kassaye was a very passionate and caring teacher. He wants everyone to do well in this course and is very helpful if you are struggling. He will make time to help you whenever he can and he answers his emails pretty quickly. He has a strong accent, but you will be able to understand him when he does lectures. I highly recommend this class.
his class is well organized and his lectures are helpful. the class consists of 3 exams and hw/quizzes on pearson. hw/quizzes are VERY time-consuming and a bit frustrating to get through. however, the class isn't too hard. he gives extra credit on the first exam & study guides. personally, I'm not good at math, so as long as you study you will pass
Definitely take him for this course! Study the study guides since most are very similar to the exams. Attendance is not mandatory but if you can go to very class GO. Retake all homework and quizzes until you get 100 since they will help your final grade. 5 attempts for quizzes and homework is unlimited attempts. Take notes and study! No Ex-Credit
Professor Kassaye is a great professor. He breaks down each step. I rated the course as difficult for me since math is not my forte. It is important to attend each class, so you won't have to catch up so much. He also answers questions without judgment, which is helpful. Good luck.
Simply put, he is a great professor. He explains difficult concepts clearly and easily. His approach to the course is very interactive, and he answers questions with passion and without judgment.
Ermias Kassaye is an outstanding professor. Each Tuesday features clear lectures, followed by quizzes on Thursdays. His accent is noticeable but easy to understand with focus. Quizzes are open-note, while exams are closed-book. The TA and professor are approachable, building strong student rapport.
good prof but hard to understand because of thick accent. you HAVE to go to every class or you'll fail the weekly quizzes. concept is easy but if you miss a class its hard to catch up and make sure you go to LA office hours.
He is an excellent professor, providing clear explanations on the topics and going through problems step by step. His accent is a little heavy, but his English is fluent and flawless. Attending class is essential to understand the concepts and practice the QUESTIONS. There are QUIZZES that encourage you to read the material in advance.
Super easy and straight-forward class style. Show up, take notes, practice problems, HW, and then an open note quiz (online and in person). Assignments are minimal (pearson!) and help A LOT. Accent is fine, thick at times but his point gets through. Attendance is not mandatory, but showing up and participating can earn brownie points for grading.
I had professor Kassaye for Math 110 my freshman year, and he was a great professor. He sometimes confuses himself while teaching and would brief over some topics assuming you learned them yourselves at home, but overall if you had any questions or concerns he would always go over them if you asked for help. Homework every class, but manageable!
I didn't mind the prof, but I do know some people that did. If you don't struggle w/ math (calc) then I say take him. Has an accent, but it's not too thick. Does a lecture where you take notes, then gives a practice worksheet. HW is sometimes harder than classwork. He has a TA that hosts reviews outside of class & a groupme. Would take him again.
Prof. Kassaye is nice; he has a tiny bit of an accent, but I understood him easily. He's not the best at explaining math, but the courses he teaches are pretty basic, so you can usually learn on your own free time. We use the HAWKES online system for homework, but we don't pay for it. You need a TI-84 calculator or better. I would take again.
If you blame the prof for low score in the course, the issue may lie with your own efforts. The course is well organized, the prof teaches effectively, provides practice worksheet for each section, includes a study guide for each exam, allow sufficient time for assignments with multiple attempts, and the course assistant offers additional support.
Professor Kassaye is not an ideal option if you have limited experience with math as a whole, especially if you haven't taken pre-calc/calc in high school. It is a very fast paced course and he does not spend an adequate amount of time on the material. Homework and quizzes are very time consuming. Exams are moderately challenging. Don't take him.
Although nice, the prof is not good at teaching math. If you do not have at least a basic understanding of the subject, you will have trouble. Some HW is inconsistent in how long it takes to complete, but at least you have several attempts. Also, questions on tests do give you partial credit if you do it half right. The TA definitely carries.
This class was really difficult especially if you don't have prior knowledge. I don't recommend you taking this class with him because personally for me his class was way too difficult he doesn't explain things and he rushes and always tells you to go to the TA office hours which they don't help at all. Don't take it with him.
Don't expect him to hold your hand and solve the problems. He taught the course very well, and he gave opportunities to succeed in the course. I was bad at math, but I did well in the course. Do the assignments and practice worksheets to be successful in the course.
I personally did not learn from him at all. His lectures also made zero sense to me. He was not helpful at all to students who needed help and just said to go to the TA office hours. He tells you the exams are like the study guide, but they aren't, you need to comb through every unit to do okay on the exams, which are so hard. Also no extra credit.
I was personally successful in this course because I attended class regularly and worked on the practice questions. Completing the assignments (multiple attempts) on time and working on the study guide questions (the solution key provided) helped me succeed. He solved problems step by step, and his assistants were very helpful. Kudos, Prof.
One thing to note when looking at a math professor's reviews is that people who are bad at math will blame anyone but themselves. The professor was willing to sit with me after class to answer any questions I had. He also provides an entire take home exam for extra credit. If you cannot pass this class, it's your own fault.
Professor Kassaye is amazing. I would take the bad reviews with a grain of salt. If you don't understand something, he will explain it again if he has to. Sometimes he will make mistakes himself but even professors make mistakes sometimes, I think it's part of the learning process. Really seems like he cares.
The problem is not that he is a bad professor, but at times doesn't have a reasoning behind many of the concepts he teaches. The first half of the semester was a breeze, but afterwards the difficulty starts to show. I thought he was a good teacher in the first half, and I didn't need to drop out. If you're not good at math take a better professor.
Dont take it with this professor, he is hated for a reason. Recognize that the people who did well had a background before this class. If you struggle in math dont take it.
Not worth taking if you don't have experience in math as he barely teaches, assigns 2 quizzes 2 hws a week, and makes a study guide yet his study guides don't reflect what's on the exam (meaning he makes it 10x more difficult on the exam). This class was a waste of time for me and probably any other professor is better than this dude
Although he's nice, he does have an accent not too heavy but some things are hard to interpret. He uses pearson for hw and quizzes. He gives out physical hw and quizzes aside from the pearson ones. He doesn't teach or really explain how to solve the problems. I wouldn't take his class again. Get ready to teach yourself the material.
give tests that do not reflect what is on the study guides, and no grade curve. he does have an accent, not terrible, but still hard to understand at times. do not take him if you can.
Tough class for non-math students. About 30 mins into each lecture, he gives a worksheet (not graded) based on that day's material—it builds throughout and really helps if you keep up. Exams are tough—no cheat sheet, very time-consuming. Studied 10+ hrs and got C's. TA only helps in 1-on-1s.
I would describe him as a Toyota Corolla. Nothing special, but he gets the job done. I will note that the exams do tend to be much harder than the homework or the study guides, so make sure to watch out for that. Otherwise, no notes on him and I would gladly take him again.
not awful, i will say canvas was super organized. exams weren't completely different from practice problems & study guides but a few questions asked were never taught. overall i would take but be prepared to study if your not good at math
I would not recommend this professor, questions were different than study guides and also does not offer any curves/extra credit. There are probably better professors to take.
The people rating him good are kissing up lol he wasn't even an average good professor. He just isn't good, period. Him containing random stuff into the exam that he has never taught etc; is just weird and him not giving us anything to work with to properly prepare for the exam (like the study guides aren't that useful) is also odd.
I'm biased since I rarely attended class which was my mistake and I own up to it but on a general note tests are NOTHING LIKE the study guide. tests are ridiculously hard and in class he goes over 3 ish easy-medium level example questions while the tests are much more difficult. Be ready to learn on your own I would take someone else if possible.
He tells students to review the study guides and practice sheets he provides, but when it's time for the exam, he includes material that he never taught us and makes the exams much harder than the study guides.
The class itself is fairly simple. You have a couple quizzes, a couple homework assignments, 2-3 tests, and then the online quizzes/homework on Pearson, which are honestly more helpful than the class itself. I taught myself the entire class content off of it, and the questions on it are very similar to the tests. Do your work and you'll be fine.
His tests are very different from the study guide and open note quizzes. The pearson assignments are very long and dont correlate with the tests. He is a very nice professor and helps you with any questions, however I wish he made his exams easier. Quizzes and exams make up 83% of your grade. He does not give extra credit and reminds you every emai
Atrocious. Three tests worth 60% of your grade, 40% for HW/quizzes. Will "prepare" you by giving easy practice questions, only for him to drop the most challenging questions on the exams. At that point, study guides were basically useless. He does allow a "retake" for exam 1 and drops some HW/quiz grades, but it barely helps. Avoid if possible.
some students expected to receive a grade without putting in the necessary effort. the course was well organized. both the professor and his assistant were very helpful. math is not my strong suit, but I successfully passed the course because I gave it my best effort. If not willing to put in the work, you're likely to be unhappy with the outcome.
I don't buy the bad reviews, as the professor's course is very well structured. He even gave us opportunities to complete the past Pearson assignments without penalty. In any case, work hard to succeed in any course.
Wasn't the biggest fan of his teaching style but that's not his fault. He grades tests faster than most professors I've had. Although he won't curve, he made accommodations for us by giving us a quiz to help us get our grade up. He also gave me a chance to make up homework that I missed which helped a ton to get my grade back up.
Don't buy the bad reviews, this guy was actually a very good teacher and learned a lot from him. His lectures were fun and helped me a lot because he gives out problems to solve. Also people say his study guide is bad but it isn't. It's not gonna be the same thing but it's gonna be very similar to the exam. Overall you should take him.
He was a very chill professor as long as you showed up to class and did the homeworks you should do great on the exams! Recitations were mandtory to show up and he's very strict on grading things late so just turn in things on time and you'll be fine.
Took him for Calc 2 over the summer, very easy course and nice guy.
Amazing professor. His teaching is clear and easy to understand. His exams are not that difficult. If you have any questions he is always ready to help.
Took him over the summer for Calc 2, got told that the class is difficult but it wasn't because he taught the class very good. Doing his study guide and watching organic chem tutor on youtube did it for me. Amazing professor and would take him again for future math classes.
This professor is not good at teaching. Everything I've learned was at home from YouTube videos. I never skipped a class before his, going to his class feels like a waste of time. It's frustrating because he is nice but can't teach or explain. A lot of his homework is doable, exams are similar to study guides.
Rest in piece to the goat
Rest in peace to an absolute legend of math.
RIP, not the greatest teacher but a great man and role model.
Decent Proff. Sad hes gone. RIP
rest in peace
I was fighting tooth and nail previously on this rmp on how much I hated his teaching style last semester. It really hit me hard hearing that he passed. My condolences to his family. He definitely stressed me out during that time, but I know he wasn't a bad guy and did give his graces/acknowledgement when you tried in his class. May he rest easy.
This class really stressed me out and I dreaded coming to it every time. Professor Kassaye tried his best with his teaching style although it wasn't for me and many others. I am genuinely so upset by hearing about his passing. sending my condolences to his family. Rest In peace professor.
Although, this class has lots of struggles for myself. I am glad he did helped me gone through lots of math problems I am having trouble with. I am truly going to miss him so much. I wish if I had the chance to get more help from him. He's really cares about every students including me.
Rest in Peace, Dr. Kassaye. Sending my condolences to your family.
I wrote my review back in November, I truly did not like the way he taught but I went to office hours after the midterm and chatted with him. He was a sweet guy, he seemed very determined to make sure everyone could pass. I still stand by my review tbh but I hope he rests in peace.
Genuinely the most stressful class I ever taken. May Mr. Kassaye rest in peace, but his study guides did not reflect so much on the first, midterm, and final. It had similar concepts, but were much more difficult compared to the study guides. His teaching style wasn't also the greatest either, so I had to learn everything through Youtube.
