Amazing prof
In-lecture quiz is good!!!!
Goh is able to take a complex topic and make it clear and simple. Hilarious through the entire semester - we get it, you're from Singapore and we're a bunch of weirdos.
Terrible Prof! Dr Goh has the ability to make the easiest of topics confusing as hell. Doesn't spend enough time properly explaining concepts. Find a good study group so you can teach yourself the entire course because after the first month you're on your own anyway. His interests include calling people out for low grades, Japanese schoolgirls etc
Horrible prof. Teaches you how to find the force on a single member and expects you to be able to solve a 6 by 6 matrix.
Dr. Goh is a brilliant professor for smart and gifted students. He explains concepts and knowledge in an unique way which makes students understand everything in his lectures. I understand why many students did not get good grades in his courses, since they skipped his wonderful lectures. To be honest, he is the best professor who I have ever met
Really good prof. So I got A+ in Statics. I don't know why many people didn't do well in this easy course
Did well in this course without even trying too hard. Not a particularly good lecturer but a decent human being overall. Makes up for his lack of quality teaching with really easy exams. Final was a piece of cake.
Dr. Goh is a fantastic prof and a great person too. He really cares about his students and he makes himself available for any thing you could possible need. That being said, he has a bad habit of losing track of time and teaching the last half of the material in the last 5 minutes of the lecture. Prepare to be VERY confused in this tough class.
The worst prof in the world
Ernest Goh is an absolutely incompetent professor and frequently has me contemplating if I chose the right program. His explanations can cause the simplest concepts to seem like pure wizardry and he is unable to properly space out his lectures, often running out of time before covering the most important topic of the day. He's also kinda creepy.
Goh is a joke. He wastes most lectures telling bad jokes and then attemps to teach the material in the last 30 seconds. On our midterm, he made multiple mistakes in step by step questions which to lead many students wasting time trying to match the incorrect given answers instead of finishing the exam. Seems suspiciously into hentai...
Don't think highly of any of the unprofessional remarks about Dr. Goh. He teaches a difficult class, and it is easy to criticize the professor for poor marks/not understanding. Dr. Goh genuinely cares about his students and their grades. His teaching style doesn't always cater to everyone, which unfortunately adds to the difficulty of the class.
Beauty fella
Mr. Goh tries to cover the fact that he is incapable of properly educating students with a garbage online system called WileyPlus that is basically mandatory for the class. The examples are written so small and go so fast you won't be able to keep up. He also makes you download sketchy programs which give you computer viruses. He can't teach.
Dr. Goh is definetely one of the better profs in first year engineering. His enthusiam for statics is really high and he tells great stories in class. Would defeinietly recommend Dr. Goh for statics. Course was decnetly hard but not too bad just do your best and youll do fine.
Dr. Goh is an interesting guy. He is from Singapore so he is not too familiar with Western society which makes lectures entertaining. Overall the Homework is way harder than the tests so it prepares you well. Tests are worth a lot but are generally easy. Finished with 86. Goh's positivity brings me joy.
To be honest, theres a good chance you will hate this man at first, simply because he teaches a hard course. However, come second semester I find myself wishing I had him as a prof for dynamics. He is a professor who genuinely cares about his students and their learning experience.
He's pretty good but if you miss a class you're basically screwed. Also, you have to attend the tutorials or you'll not be able to solve some of the harder questions. We barely use the textbook in his class, except when he shows it on the projector or for 1 of the 2 assignments. Also you have to buy wileyPLUS or you lose 10% of the grade.
Great prof would recommend taking statics and dynamics with him
I didn't find his teaching style to be very effective as lectures were spent showing slides with equations on them and poor explanations of how these equations apply to what we were learning. The other half the lecture was doing WileyPLUS problems, which felt like a waste of lecture time. Any problem he does in class are the examples from the text
Dynamics with Dr. Goh was very enjoyable. He teaches in an effective manner which helped me learn. His exams were almost just like the asignments as they are straight from the book. Warning, the class is still very hard and it requires a lot of practice. Separates the men from the boys it does.
His teaching style (if you could even call it teaching) revolves around using pre-solved solutions printed out then re-written on the overhead. If you ever have him as a prof, you're better off self teaching the material (it will probably yield a better result). If you go to his office hours asking for help, he just shows you the solution guide.
Dr. Goh is truly a great professor. His homework can be really difficult if it is your first time seeing the material but once you understand it then you are set for the mid term and final because they are significantly easier. Entertaining lad and his stories about his home country are always a great time in lecture. He is one of UBCO's best.
Probably the worst professor in this planet
He makes jokes even he is not funny. Also terrible teaching skills
Don't take his class. He is just horrible.
I would rather study by myself lol
Dr. Goh honestly cares about students that care about doing well. He provides examples which is helpful. DO NOT skip lectures because there are in-lecture activities and DO NOT skip tutorials because even when you do go its insanely difficult.
Very good prof! Most people really like him so that's good to hear! Its a hard class but if you be a man about it, you'll get through. Very understanding and nice. He is a Michael Angelo at drawing diagrams. I will definitely be taking him again, as would the VAST majority of students.
He's gotten a lot better lately and really does care about his students unlike a lot of profs.
Dr. Goh is great. I look forward to his 8 AM lectures. His jokes are genuinely funny and unique, but I think his humor is lost on a lot of freshmen. He really cares about his students and has asked multiple times for feedback on his teaching, which he takes seriously. The material he teaches is tough, but he teaches it well.
I'm a big fan of Dr. Goh. Even though according to some, his mannerisms can be a little controversial, I, personally have never noticed him intentionally being disrespectful (It's actually quite the opposite). He's funny, always very helpful and seems to want his students to excel in the course. I look forward to having him again in the future.
Goh is a pretty good teacher. He definitely knows a lot about Statics, but he also assumes the students do too and it's the hardest first year course. He tends to go pretty fast and assumes you understand what he is saying even if you have no clue. Strongly recommended going to Math and Science Centre/SL for help with Statics.
Between wildly inappropriate "jokes" and the fact that this can a difficult course to wrap your head around, Dr goh isn't a great prof . His entire teaching style (if you can call it teaching) is to rush through an example with simple numbers, and then look on in confusion when the more complex numbers (given by WileyPLUS) give students trouble.
unclear explanations
Shouldn't teach!
Terrible.
He is unkind, and his classes are boring. Listening to his voice makes me sleepy, and the way he teaches confuses me.
Gives out a lot hw first day
This professor teaches one of the most difficult courses for engineering (Statics). He expects us to get WileyPlus which is an online subscription costing $100. He only wants you to get a green box for the quizzes and doesn't give a damn about how much you understand the course. I think I will probably fail or have to drop out of the course soon.
His teaching style is basically solving sample problems with concepts that have not been covered in order for you to learn them. A lot of lecture time is spent confused, and then you teach yourself after class is over. You need to be capable of working independently and motivated enough to teach yourself. Unfortunately his class is mandatory.
Don't take his class! Tons of homework, and bascially doesn't teach, uses youtube videos for most of the lecture, a waste of money taking this course .
Dr. Goh is a nice person and he genuinely tries to help if you contact him. But he makes you pay $100 for Wileyplus which is tough since we're already paying so much for tuition. The assignments are soo long and difficult, and so are the tutorial questions. It's very unrealistic and doesn't help in learning.
Difficult course, but Dr. Goh is genuinely kind and caring. He really made an effort to connect with students despite the course being online, and he was always in a positive mood. I dont have anything bad to say about him as a professor.
Too many people fault Dr. Goh for the fact that the stuff he teaches is really hard. He is actually such a sweet and funny guy. He cares a lot about his students and he tries his best to make sure you succeed. Willeyplus absolutely blows though I wish he wouldnt use that, but then again the Tutorials are basically free easy marks. You'll need those
Many people don't give enough credit to Dr. Goh for the resources and assistance he provides. Although it's a difficult course, and using resources outside of class is helpful, he provides multiple mock midterms and finals. Wileyplus was also a great resource and platform to work on problems with unlimited attempts. The course is tough but doable!
Dr. Goh's lectures can be confusing at times, however he is always trying to improve. This is a difficult course, however there were many resources where students could reach out for help. Dr. Goh is a very kind man, and I enjoyed being in his class.
Dr. Goh started out the online semester weak, but after feedback he was one of the few profs to actually change what he was doing to help the students during the online semester. He gave lots of homework which is required to be successful in this course as it is a difficult subject. Go to synchronous sessions as he teaches better then.
This is a very tough course but professor Goh listens to feedback and improved a lot which helped a lot of students out with the final. He is the only professor that actually improved himself on criticism received and he definitely earned all of the student's respect. Make sure to attend lectures because he explains the content very well.
Dr. Goh is a nice person, however, students learn very little in the class. His lectures are super boring and slow. I got A in Statics, however I feel I should have failed, not that I complain.
I didn't like Goh at first, but that quickly changed. While the lectures are heavy and there is a lot of homework, it's for good reason. The material is difficult to learn, but Goh takes all his feedback to heart and makes active changes. Also, the heavy practice questions were worth it, otherwise I would never be able to replicate the material.
The first problem is the $100 fee for Wiley plus, a program that's basically the same as the canvas except it needs three tabs to be open and has a more confusing layout. The second issue is during lectures he solves easy questions without teaching the theory, then the assignments are much harder and the tests are even harder.
Goh takes feedback then acts on it well. Very good lecturer, best prof I've ever had in terms of how well he was able to make me understand stuff. Statics with him was the hardest course I've ever had, but I got 100%. Anyone who rates him poorly expected him to make a very difficult subject easy FOR them, they simply didn't put in the work.
Pretty much the hardest class out there, if you do try you can get a good mark. The sole reason im rating him a 1 is the fact is he doesnt give much midterm/final practice.
Dr. Goh is a good professor. His explanations are not the most clear, but he takes student feedback seriously to try to make the course as best as it can be with the way he teaches it. The final exam was weighted very highly, but similar to the mock exam he provides.
Dr. Gohs teaching style isnt for everyone and its definitely not the greatest. To be fair the course is super hard to teach and most the learning comes from practice by yourself. Have to work hard to pass. A super mediocre professor who is always open to student feedback but teaches badly.
Goh, teaching APSC180 (Statics) is overall a good prof. One point is for statics buy the textbook it will be so helpful. The tutorials were at point fairly hard the worst one took me 6 hours however more normally 3 hours. The tutorials start hard and just get worse before tutorial I would recommend doing easy problems from the textbook first.
Hard class, reading textbooks to understand the concept is very important. Practice is the key to passing this course.
Goh cares for his students but is not a suitable teacher. The information is presented in a non-traditional matter and makes learning difficult, especially for a course as difficult as APSC 180. Goh uses a self-learning strategy and I think that is not the best way to present a course of this caliber.
Dr. Goh is the most underrated Statics prof. He is committed to students' learning and constantly seeks feedback to improve his methods. Goh gets a bad rap because of how difficult the course is, but I genuinely think that if you show up and try your best, you will do well, because he sets you up to do so. He also emails back reeeally fast
Usually a hit or miss with Goh when it comes to the course overall, sometimes the exams are easy and fair and sometimes not. I've taken 5 of his classes and the difficulty of exams are never consistent and the only constant is his funny and witty lectures. Great guy and friendly out of class though. Truly a staple of UBCO Engineering!

Please avoid him
Many students struggled with Dr. Goh's teaching in the 1st year Statics class. However, I think the course is well laid out for you to be able to easily work through the material. I think Dr. Goh does best in encouraging self-directed learning which is probably the best way to learn statics. I would highly recommend him as a professor.
His course is set up so that you can complete lecture activities and problems by simply switching the numbers from the examples used in class. Although this may seem incredible, his lack of actually teaching the concepts and problem-solving strategies makes it very difficult to learn the material and succeed on exams and in future courses.
Prepare for some poor quality online videos in lecture for this course. The exams are extremely challenging and I was left wondering if I would pass. His teaching is not helpful, I suggest using youtube or friends who know what's going on for help. Want to do well: do the practice exams a million times over and use the cheat sheet he allows.
Presents material in a way you have to know it beforehand. Maintains a high fail rate every year but insists students need to study more. Mandatory textbook for 24% of your grade. Lectures are not very useful for an introduction to material and tutorials are where most of the learning happens. Try to avoid when you can.
He is a great prof for some people. He allows for students to learn as they like which can leave some students behind.
Ernest Goh is a pretty great professor, his statics class was very difficult, but Dr. Goh was a really nice person and I still enjoyed going to his class.
Dr. Goh takes some getting used to to enjoy fully. Having accessible video lectures is a great study tool that is easy to learn from, but Dr. Goh does little lecturing himself. The course is admittedly very hard but once the terms click it is much easier. He attempts to be funny during his lectures, his jokes aren't good, but he's a funny guy.
Dr. Goh does not do lectures. He provides pre-recorded videos on how to solve lecture activities. He does not speak in said videos much: It's a computerized voice and is painful to listen to and absorb information from. Apart from 3 assignments, all work is done through mandatory textbook purchase. Exams are only passable by using mock exam answers
This guy is the Goht, you don't even need to go to a single lecture if you study right. Gives a mock exam which hard carries you through exam season. Gohted violin player and absolutely hilarious
Really weird guy who only really teaches through ancient in-built tutorials
Get ready to learn SolidWorks by yourself. For the project he essentially wants you to recreate his moped thing which I find defeats the point of a creative project but I digress. Definitely could do with actually teaching SolidWorks rather than relying on the built-in tutorials.
Dont bother going to lectures. No point. All you do is solidworks tutorials
0/10. If you need to take this class find another prof or take it over the summer.
On one hand, I found his instructions and SOLIDWORKS tutorials quite good, and I learned a lot from his class. On the other hand, he is unnecessarily abrasive, talks about politics in class, told students they didn't deserve to be at the university, and spent part of a lecture explaining why students' complaints about his course are wrong.
Ernest Goh is one of the most unpleasant/condescending professors I've had to interact with. His project guidelines were vague and confusing (to the point even the TAs struggled to give proper answers) and when asked directly, would refer you to the unusable project rubric. His tutorials also do not prepare you for the midterm, so prepare to study.
He didn't go into as much detail as required for the big project and gave final review that was missing 50% of the mc questions, a orthographic view that changed dimensions between the review and the answer key, an isometric view that wasn't fully defined, and a 2-point perspective had some minor errors in it.
I would rather drop every course he's teaching than taking it with him
Lowkey heard rumors this guy touched a chick so do you what you want with that. Besides that could be possibly one of the worst profs in the UBC society possibly dethroning Alyse Kiesser. Takes some skill to do that good man.
Unclear project guidelines. Goes on random unnecessary tangents during lectures. Didn't teach any of the hand-drawing components of the course correctly and left out major pieces of information. Learned most of it from YouTube.
very unclear what he wanted, and didn't seem like he knew what was going on.
Goh regained my respect as a prof after 380. I had him for 180 and didn't like it, but 380 was taught very well imo. Helpful lecture activities, a project which used our knowledge from class well, and very fair midterm/final. The lectures are very fast paced but that's because there's so much material to cover. The textbook he used was really good.
A lot of improvements compared to his 1st year statics class. The group project takes so much works but aligns well on the course content and the exam. Class activities like doing calculations on excel also helps a lot with the project. He also post lectures videos so you don't need to attend his 8AM class and the exams are open-book.
