He's a great professor, a little tough at first, but when you know what he wants, its not so bad. He takes the time to help during class and after if needed. He never had a problem admitting if there was somthing wrong with what he said or wrote. Funny
VERY unclear... had to fight for a B... not the greatest personality either
Extremely tough to give him what he wants. I often felt like a lousy writer because of his comments on work. Ended up getting a B.
This class gave me hives. He does make you feel like a bad writer; I didn't always agree with his comments on why he took off points. The broadcast portion of the class is so much better than print. You will get through it, just don't overload your courses

If you can figure out what he wants, it's easy. If you can't, you fail. The class is entertaining sometimes. It's a frustrating class b/c he isn't always clear about what he wants and so my grade in there isn't as high. I think he's a "B" teacher, getting an A is really hard.
ridiculous. he has no clue. he's ocd about attendance. he's insecure about his teaching methods. obviously finds pointless ways to fill up time, since this class has no content.
Not clear on what he wants. READ THE MATERIAL and you will do ok. Need to be a "deep" writer to do well for him. I WOULD NOT take this again.
This was an honors section and I don't think he knew quite what he was doing. Started out trying way too hard to be "honors" but once he changed his style of teaching the class got a lot easier. He puts in a lot of work and expects work back but is a fair grader and tries to make class interesting.
good professor and nice guy.
He is very unclear with what he wants from students. His teaching method is very disorganized. If possible take a different professor.
It was so very difficult to please him, as folks contend here. We had a real falling out about some of my work (and my grades). We gained a modest respect for each other over the years. I would suggest looking at a different prof. I did leave there feeling like a terrible writer, but I guess I turned out ok. I'm working for the largest newspaper in my state. :) I ended up with a C in his class. :(
Great teacher and a nice guy. I learned a lot in this class; got an A and thought he was pretty clear about what he wanted.
great for journalism majors... easy to get along with and interact with in and out of class
I took the honors section and I loved his class. Prof Wiggins is very engaging and makes classes fun. Tuesday lecture Thurs. application of lecture tends to be the format. He is a stickler for attendance so show up. If you have problems with your grades at the beginning of the year just schedule a meeting with him. It helps. My grade jumped up.
Wiggins is an all-around nice guy. You can go to his office to talk with him whenever you want. If you're feeling shaky with your writing, let him know, and he'll help you out. I really admire this guy both as a teacher and a person. He makes class fun and interesting. Just show up every day.
In reporting class, sought to expose students to variety of topics, writing styles. Uninspiring, stuck to the basics, didn't challenge students. Easy grader. Also didn't do anything with multimedia.
Fun class. Interesting. Make sure you take good notes, but he does highlight what you're going to need for the exams. His tests are different(all fill in the blank, in narrative form), but once you get a feel for how the tests go you'll be fine.
this class is intresting. sometimes there will be days where you actually apply what you are learning, which can be fun. his tests come straight from the review. he will tell you in class what to review SO REVIEW IT, because whatever he says will be on the test, will be on the test!!! overall, not a bad class if study to some degree.
His lectures are very boring and he talks VERY fast! He talks more to the front of the class, so if you want a good grade, sit up front! He does not put powerpoints up on BlackBoard so you better take good notes! He does not seem to care about what his class wants all that much. When we do have group activities they are fun though!
smart alleck, my favorite teacher this year :)
If you take good notes during class, you can pass all the tests. Tests are all fill in the blank and short answer, he tried to find excuses to give out extra credit to our class too. Although he kind of has an attitude problem, not a bad class to take.
He is a VERY hard teacher. You have to know every single little detail for the exams. He is also very rude! One time I went to him for help to clear up a question I had and all he did was talk down to me. It could have been because my class whined about everything, but all I did was ask a simple question and I didn't get any respect from him.
i liked professor wiggins. he doesnt take any nonsense and he is big on students who take initative and make the grades. you have to flat out know the info for exams but its not difficult if you spend the time to memorize it. make an effort to get to know him, and thats how you earn respect. his expectations are high but not impossible.
Copy everything he puts up in his ppts, & write down every word he says. I would advise a laptop b/c he talks quickly & won't wait for you. Memorize the basic 5 w's about everything. His tests are 100 fill in the blank. Doesn't listen to his students, more like loves to degrade them. You won't learn anything useful, but welcome to college :)
The average for our class' first test was a 54...tests are difficult. If you are good at memorizing you will do really well though. He is easily angered and not very nice, but he hated our class (somewhat understandably). Attendence is mandatory and all material for tests is in class notes, the book is useless.
Wiggins is the best. He really knows what he is doing. He does ask a lot but for good reason. If you read the chapters prior to class, take good notes, & do a decent amount of studying you will be fine. Listen to what he says, hes not lying. get to know him. He is always willing to help & he has good connections that can help in the future.
This guy is awful, really do not take this class. He is tough for no reason, not helpful at all, and will make you feel stupid.
I don't know what people expect, it's a college class, you WILL have to do work. Great guy, managed to put up with the spoiled brats that were in my class, and still found a way to help us all out. Great guy and necessary class, so I would recommend him.
Wiggins is most likely the worst Journalism professor I've had. If you ever run into an emergency, go ahead and drop the class because he won't give you the assignemnts you're going to miss and will give you a 0 for all of them. And if his email doesn't accept emails from your account when he wants them to, there's another 0. Awful teacher
RUN! He got pissed off at our class and canceled our final exam and assigned an impossible paper in replace of it! this professor made me want to change my major! Such a discouragement!
Terrible teacher. Tests are a matter of regurgitating names and dates and not a test of actual comprehension. If you can memorize a bunch of trivia then you'll do fine, but otherwise he'll just piss you off.
He is the worst professor I've ever had! Don't take him!!! If he's the only professor teaching the class wait until next semester and take the other professor. He literally spend 30 minutes talking about a chart because he had nothing to talk about. The tests are fill in the blank and short answer and you have to know dates and names. Pointless.
If you miss more than 3 classes he WILL reduce your grade. I got into a car accident and he still wouldn't excuse my absence. Do not take this class. They offer it over the summer with a different professor. All you do is spit out dates and names. Even if you read the book, this class is too hard. Great lecturer, horrible at making tests.
not worth taking. All I learned were techniques to memorize all the stuff for the tests. Tests are too rediculous for an entry level course. The course didn't enlighten me on the general subject of journalism, it just made me dread the class.
He is the absolute worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life. DO NOT TAKE HIM! The only people that actually did well in this class either spent weeks preparing for the FILL IN THE BLANK test or cheated. If I could redo one thing with this semester it would be taking this class with Wiggins. If you go to him with concerns he could care less.
RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUN. AND RUN FAST.
I'm an A student and made a B+ in this class. I worked extremely hard to get the grade, and when looking back on his class I realize it was a complete waste of time. I have no respect for his method of teaching; I learned nothing. I knew how to memorize in junior high. Take this from anyone but Wiggins.
HORRIBLE TEACHER!!!! Even though I had a doctor's note, he didn't excuse it. He doesn't prepare well for tests or for life in general. His TA are absolutely useless. By far the worst communicator I know.
honestly, he's not that bad at all. the tests are hard, but lets be real, its college. his classes are actually pretty interesting and he makes them fun. just study the notes you take in class and its really not that bad at all. just study and youll be fine, really.
I adore Professor Wiggins! He is so funny and interesting. His tests aren't bad at all as long as you study. I recommend taking notes in his class and studying every bit of them. As long as you actually pay attention and are interested in Journalism then you will do great!
Professor Wiggins is an intelligent and interesting teacher. He does well with keeping a class of three hundred engaged and is surprisingly interactive. For the tests, go to the SI sessions because the TA will have a very helpful study guide and make sure you take careful notes. Memorize people, places, dates, and definitions and you'll do fine.
Wiggins does not give the easiest tests- purely on memorization with fill in the blanks. However, if you copy down the notes he gives in class & read the chapters in the book (which are a little long but interesting), you will do absolutely fine!..I mean, after all it's college. I read the chpts and study 2 nights in advance and make A/B's on tests
I was really worried to take his class after reading all of the poor ratings. It was actually a lot easier than everyone made it out to be. As long as you GO TO CLASS, you will know exactly what you need to for the test. He really doesnt make test questions from the book. Take good notes and study hard and anyone can do well in his class!
he's not as bad as some people say, if you put in effort & go to class then you'll do well. tests are mostly fill in the blank/memorization. make sure to go to office hours if you're having trouble and he's willing to help. if you aren't a morning person though, try to take him in the afternoon!
Look there are a lot of bad comments about this guy. Bottom line he is a nice guy and if you go to class and take notes you will make an A if you dont go to class you will fail. The matireal is pretty interesting and you can understand most of what he says. His tests are all fill in the blank. Just come to class and you'll do fine.
I was scared to take his class because of what I had read on here but he was the complete opposite. He was funny and kept the class interesting with video clips and discussions during lectures. The tests are exactly from your notes in class and you need to study! Go to class and study and it's an easy A.
Do not take this class with him anyone else but him. He does what every other class does by using the book and needing to know the notes but he puts stuff on the test you have no idea about. If you miss to many classes. More then three and you lose a whole letter grade. If you spell anyone answers wrong then the whole thing is wrong. Don't take it
This guy was terrible! His tests seemed easy enough but his grading is ridiculous. Not to mention, he thinks that asking for the most insignificant part of the fact is the way to learn it. He's not very organized with his teaching either. If you have the chance to take this class with another professor, do it!
HATED his class. I think he'd be a cool person outside of the classroom, but he is a horrible professor. Tests are ridiculous. I'd steer clear of him if you want to do well and feel as though you've accomplished something.
I got an A in the class, do just study your notes and write everything down that he puts on the board, And if he tells you to not worry about something, dont listen to him, know it becuase he may put that on the exam.
Professor Wiggins is a great guy and he led a great class! the class was fun, and even studying for his exams wasn't so bad. I would recommend going to class every day, taking all of the notes, and then make flash cards. His tests are all fill in the blank with dates and names. I didn't like the way his tests were, but they were easy.
Class is very boring and the tests are pretty ridiculous, but if you go to class every day, take notes, and study then you can do well
this class is not extremely hard. just pure memorization. study, study, study! but don't waste time studying the book, it's the class notes you need to worry about. write down EVERYTHING in class. the tests are fill in the blank - way too difficult and ridiculous for the class. most useless information burned into my brain ever.
wiggins is pretty boring, but he does show youtube clips and clearly knows what he's talking about. you need to go to class and copy his lectures verbatim. i didn't like him for a while, but when i went to him for help my opinion completely changed.
Worst professor ever. Don't take him if you are in college to learn something. This guy should be at a community college.
It's easy to skip, but you really need to get all the notes and go to SI sessions to succeed in this class. His tests are very hard and he is not the least bit lenient or helpful. Have a good attitude about his ridiculousness and Kermit-like voice, though, and you'll get through it.
Some people were skipping his boring class so he began calling roll every day!In a class of 80.Take someone else! The class shouldn't be hard. His tests are fill in the blank with random words.Doesn't give a study guide.
Take a different section!! His test are the hardest ever. They are completely fill in the blank and they have nothing to do with what he taught in lecture. If you do take him go to the S.I. It helps to a small degree
if there is ANY other professors teaching this course, take them. he's not helpful and you'll dread the class.
Wiggins sucks. Take another teacher if offering this class. this teacher ALONE caused me to change my major. He make print journalism NOT FUN
This guy turned out to be one of my favorite professors. You have to go to class, his tests are straight memorization from the lectures..I never used the book. He's very helpful if he knows that you're putting in the effort.
Hands down the worst professor I have ever had. It was torture to go to his class. He was very unclear about what he expected from you, and graded very harshly. He makes you feel like you are a terrible writer. The final exam was ridiculously long. Me and about half the class did not finish the final exam. I am know rethinking my major choice.
I would recommend anyone but him. His powerpoints are long and boring but if you copy it verbatim you should do fine on his 100% fill in the blank tests. Memorize everything he says in lecture because there is a chance that it will be on the test as well as what it is in the book. Hard class but if you work hard you get a decent grade. Study!!!
Oh my lord. I had the hardest time with this professor. I had missed an exam because I was sick at the doctors office ON CAMPUS. I tried to turn in my note toward the end of the semester. but no..i was a DAY late. So, I got a ZERO on one of the exams! Please, take someone else. His class ruined my GPA.
I took Wiggins twice- the first semsester I failed the class but I ended up with an A the 2nd time. You really do have to go to this class, trust me, he knows his students! write all of his lectures verbatim- thats what he uses for the test questions. He's really not that bad of a guy despite the reviews. I feel confident in the material now.
Prof. Wiggins wants you in class, you're grade's deducted if you miss 3 times. Just go and write down everything he shows you in PowerPoints. Studying was annoying because it's straight memorization, but there are only 4 non-cumulative exams so it's not that bad. If he sees that the whole class is doing poorly he will try to help you out. Made an A
Do not read these reviews and think we are exaggerating. He is THAT BAD. If you cannot get the other teacher in this section, WAIT, to take it when you can get him. If you still take this class, then I have no advice for you, you're screwed.
Wiggins has become my favorite teacher so far this year. He actually holds students responsible for their actions, something that has become increasingly rare, even in college. Just pay attention and keep up with the material and you'll do fine.
Not gonna lie, he is very tough. But the guy knows his material. He simply expects a lot out of you because he is so passionate about the subject. Don't ask dumb questions that you may have asked in high school, he doesn't like that too much. The lectures are interactive and he uses lots of Powerpoint and YouTube. Only take this if you LOVE Journ.
Hardest professor ever. His tests are horrible, he is crazy with grading, and pop quizzes? Horrible. Please please please do not take this class for Journalism. You will regret it. He can have dry humor at times, but nothing is worth failing! DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
not a bad teacher, tests are just unbelievably hard. you literally have to absorb every word to do well. have fun
The only thing that can be expected in this class is a pop quiz. If he comes in smiling, you're having one that day. Try to aviod taking his class if possible because what he tells you to study is never actually on the test. Hate this class.
this professor does not care about the students, is happier the worse we do. gives us a list to study for the exams and puts completely other things on it. pop quizes are the happiest thing he probably does in a day. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. SERIOUSLY.
POP QUIZZZES MAKE HIM HAPPY SO DOES OUR FAILURE. I'LL BE HAPPY TO GET A C IN THIS CLASS. THE TESTS ARE UNPREDICTABLE AND THEY ARE FILL IN THE BLANK.
This guy is absolutely ridiculous. I spent hours studying and memorizing facts and I still would make D's or C's on his exams. Even if you memorize all of the vocabulary in the textbook he rewords the definitions on the test are completely reworded. I had all A's freshman year except this class (I made a C...barely)
He is seriously rough. The class is impossible to study for. If I could memorize the book, maybe I could make a good grade. I make great grades but I'll be lucky to scrape by with a "C" with this professor, and my advisor said everyone is complaining about the same thing. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Don't expect to get by with a high grade without working for it. You might as well memorize everything he gives you for the test. Be prepared for pop quizes. Everything is fill-in-the-blank and no word bank.
Professor Wiggins is a teacher that doesn't exactly care about how well you do. His lectures are long, tedious and repetitive, while he gives you hints about the exams, he really doesn't help you at all (& theres no TA) . He offered about 2 extra credit opps and has pop quizzes that are very challegening. i would not reccomend taking 201 with him!
Ridiculously hard. This is by far my favorite class; it is the most interesting to me but this man makes me hate this class. His tests are impossible; all fill in the blank. You study your ass off and you still are probably going to fail. You can tell he's a good guy, and he means well, he just doesn't have sympathy for freshmen.
I hate my major because of Wiggins. It's amazing how he seems to think I need to be treated like a 4-year-old because I pose a question about something I don't understand. I realize being a professor can be a miserable profession, but don't take it out on students who are trying. He is intolerable, and that's the nicest thing I can say.
Professor Wiggins is not nearly as bad as people make him out to be, I really enjoyed this class. As long as you show up, read the textbook, and make sure you take HIS notes you're set. Simple.
Anyone who trashes Wiggins is pretty much just lazy or terribly confused. I mean really. Yeah, the guy gives pop quizzes every other day, but are they really a surprise if you know they're coming and and that they are word for word from the chapter summary. His tests are from the summaries and his notes, and he knows his stuff. You can learn a lot.
Such a grump man. Truly does not care about the students. He doesn't post his notes online and he goes very quickly with his slides. Don't ask him to slow down because he'll have a meltdown that the class isn't putting forth enough effort when clearly we were trying to get the notes because that's what the tests are based on. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS
Wasn't very helpful at all or understanding when I came to him for help.
Before you read my opinion, let me just tell you to take someone else. Mr. Wiggins is a nice person and a knowledgeable professor. The problems comes in with his tests. The format is all fill in the blank, narrative format. Who the hell does that? NEVER in 13 yrs of ED have I EVER had to take one of those type tests. It's really ridiculous.
Mr. Wiggins is a nice man and a knowledgeable professor. The problems just comes in with his tests/exams. They're all fill in the blank, narrative format. In 13 yrs of Ed I've NEVER had to take that style format -- EVER! It's really ridiculous actually. Even the people in the office have been hearing about it. My advice: take someone else!
Very hard grader.
Professor Wiggins is very knowledgable and was always extremely helpful to me when I approached him. Yes, his tests are unusual and can be nerve racking. However, his tests also recite the notes from class VERBATIM. If you don't do well in this class, blame yourself...not Wiggins.
Wiggins is smart but man is he tightly wound. I had him in the fall and it was a nightmare. I even went to see the dean at one point because his tests were so hard and not one person made over a C on one of them. He followed a girl yelling at her down the hall. Be prepared to know that textbook!!! Every quiz comes straight from the chapter summary!
The only reason you should not take the course is if you are lazy, and do not want to put forth the effort in studying. Wiggins made the class very interesting and enjoyable. Although class was okay, the test were ridiculous. Be prepared to study or you are going to fail. Also, the best way to study for his test is a study group!!!!!
Was weary going into it because most of my friends had him for 201 and I heard stories. I didn't think he was too awful. I wouldn't take 506 with him if you can avoid it, it's a very odd topic. A lot of writing, but it wasn't too hard. He's a very strict grader as others have said. Didn't start taking attendance until too many people were skipping.
Very strict grader, but definitely knows his stuff and is good-natured and friendly to those who treat him with respect. Reporting assignments often involve finances or statistics, so make sure you triple-check your numbers. If you pay attention to what he asks of you and at least know basic AP style, you should be okay.
He prefers a 2.9 on the easiness scale, But I give him a 5. simply out, all you have to do is show up and pay attention. He's the type of professor that makes you want to change your major just to take more of his classes... His tests look verbose but they are funny.
Wiggins is a really, really great teacher who knows what he's talking about and will help you improve. He's a little intimidating but talk to him in class, go to his office, he's a really great person and outstanding professor-the kind you would want to keep up with and go back to when you need a reference. take 291 with him and you won't regret it
He is tolerable. The lectures can be interesting & as long as you pay attention & take notes in class, you'll do fine. I will warn you that there are 3 blue book tests & they can be pretty tedious. As long as you're thorough & concise with your answers, you'll do well. He is a tough grader regarding essays (2) so be sure you know the material.
I took this class because I was really excited about the topic, 'Women and Minorities in the Mass Media', and he honestly ruined it for me. He's very sarcastic, only gives good grades if you say exactly what he wants to hear, and was very hard to communicate with. Only take if you absolutely have to.
Unless you say exactly what he has in mind, even if you back up your answer, you're lucky if you get a B. Grades off of 5 papers and a final and most are struggling in the class. Not something I'll use in my career either. Didn't learn a thing. Also, way too sarcastic.
Professor Wiggins loved what he was teaching, but he made it hard for us to love it as students. He is extremely vague, giving little to no direction on the final exam nor the 5 papers you do throughout the course. If you are a great writer and good at interpreting figurative elements, then you'll be fine.
He cares that you grasp the subject material, but the material itself is boring, and the required readings are often long and dry. Creates solid class environment that is inclusive and non-political.
I did well in his class and got an A+ in 506, but he was very tough in another class I had him in. He alternates between passive aggressive and outright aggressive. He stormed out once because a guy came in late and told us we'd go to jail if someone picked up a graded paper for a friend. A major jerk, in emails and in person. Take someone else.
avoid at all costs!
I love Professor Wiggins. I took him for 506 and 599. For 506 he can be somewhat of a tough grader on the reaction papers you have to do, but that's only because he is so clear about what he wants. He has a very understated sense of humor, and is willing to hep you get to where you need to be if you ask him. He wants you to get an A.
Professor Wiggins is very rude and uncaring. He will embarrass you in front of the whole class if he thinks you didn't write enough on a bonus assignment. When someone gets up to go to the bathroom he will make a comment or will stop talking until you leave the classroom, making it very awkward. He is a very tough grader and gives no feedback.
He doesn't give much feedback and will fail you on optional assignments you take advantage of, which will drop your grade. He is not understanding at all (told me to write my papers on my phone when my laptop was in the shop) and failed me on a paper because I mentioned things I learned in a different class instead of his.
I was terrified for Jour 506 with Wiggins after seeing his reviews, but I loved his class. He attempted to make lectures interesting -- we would play spot the different games and we watched an episode of Letterkenny in class. If you pay attention in class, participate and pay attention to what he wants from assignments it's honestly a good time.
Main criticism of Dr. Wiggins was the lack of clarity within the grading criteria for this class. Otherwise very engaging and personable and provided engaging material for thorough analysis and discussions within class.
I adore Dr. Wiggins. He is so funny and really personable. He got to know each of us personally. He can be a tough grader so you have to really put your best effort into assignments. Every movie/tv show we watched was entertaining and engaging. Lots of opportunity of extra credit too. Lectures are long but he lets you leave early most days.
Dr. Wiggins is personable and engaging, though grading can be tough. The movies and discussions are interesting, and unstuck ai proved helpful for exam prep.
Professor Wiggins is a great guy, and I enjoyed his class. He makes the material easy to understand for students who have no journalism experience. The viewings are mostly interesting; some can drag on forever, but most are exciting and enjoyable. Assignments are graded tough, but feedback is given, and Professor Wiggins is very accessible.
