Excellent teacher! Made the class understand Biology very well.

The dude is awesome! Very funny too. :)
His exams are like
Can be a jerk, but an excelelnt teacher
Writes confusing questions, then lectures all class on how clear his exams are.
tricky test, very hard
too tough, not clear
His questions only appear tricky if you don't know the material. Read the book.
Very knowledgeable, but has a bad attitude towards teaching. Not approachable
Great Lecturer! And he's not easy.
He writes questions that make absolutely no sense, or are misleading, and then will lecture us for an hour about how he doesn't write tricky questions, even though over 100 people failed the midterm.
I also had him for 113 and 327. Not approachable at all, not a good aditude towards students, test are written from his perspective (not a students perspective) so its hard to take the tests. Very harse grader and doesnt grade on what he tells you.

Also 113 & 327...all these negative comments are whiny...try harder to learn and you'll be surprised

Cryptic lectures and even more cryptic tests. If you're a bio major, you're screwed.

He teaches several Bio courses and loves his job. Most of the ratings here are from first year freshman and you can tell they are not ready to accept the challange of a university education. Ernie is a great biologist and loves to teach and IS not bad!
good lectures, funny, loves ecology. tests difficult but fair if you study the material
For any intro course he is way too full of himself. I have to take natural science to graduate, I liked high school science and did well in them, but this guy is extreme wannna be Ann Arbor lecturer..how come no PhD?
He maybe a bit cocky, but he's not difficult and he's funny.
Very passionate about waht he does and transfers that to his student. Im my opinion the best lecturer at UMF. I would hate it when class was over!!
He's tough, but his tests are straightforward and follow lecture. If you study, you'll get a good grade.
from a freshman- a little unapproachable but a great lecturer and keeps the lecture interesting as opposed to parfitt
Funny and a weird dude. You have to pay real close attention when he gives out notes during lecture because you'd never know what he's gonna cover in his exams. Most of the time he's unfair when grading post lab reports.

Wonderful teacher! Those who say bad things probably have never approached him at all, or don't care about learning. Absolutely dedicated! Loves to help. You WILL learn and have fun. He's actually an inspiration to continue!!!! Thanks
He keeps you interested in his lectures. Keeps you awake. He seems to be a down to earth straight foward kind of guy.
he's a little full of himself and confrontational with students, I think he's a good teach if he likes you but the complete opposite if not, he's just not a great person, but has desent lectures.
His lectures follow outlines really well, and the lectures are helpful. He is NOT a nice person outside of lecture.
He is actually very nice outside of class. He just doesn't feel sorry for slackers.
I had Ernie for 3 classes, 111,327, and field biology. He's an enthusiastic lecturer and a caring teacher, and an all-around great guy. I spent several semesters as his assistant also.
easy class, and easy tests.....the info is right from the notes
study the notes. Thats all. Tests are straight forward and easy
BEST LECTURER ON CAMPUS! I never wanted class to end. Material is all encompassing which really helps you get a full grasp of all the concepts and how they interact. Tests are very fair. Quiet, very fair man. This may be misunderstood. Love his laugh!
I love his style of clothes, and his bald spot.
hes good,and exciting
The guy laughs weird, but he's ok. He's got a great sense of humor too. I had him for BIO 327 just recently and he was there to help when I need him.
Ernie rocks! He's intimidating at first, but he's very witty and fair. Tests are hard unless you study but if you do it will all be worth it! Take his Field Bio course!
he teaches 2nd half of bio111, study your butt off or you will fail his test. Nearly 80% of the class fails his tests. He expects more out of students than what he asks for. On the contrast, he's a Very good lecturer, but extremly tough grader! I'm going to avoid him in the future.
Best lectures ever, you actually wanted to listen for fear of missing something funny or really interesting. Great gut, tests really test you must study! all in all a great course.
teaches second half of lecture. everyone failes tests for most part. be ware. If you ask him a question he tends to just look at youlike you are stupid
Had him for lecture and lab-- avoid him unless he seems to be having a good day! Good lecturer, sucks at tests. I wouldnt take him again if i had the choice.
This joker teaches the 2nd half of bio111, which is animals. He wasted 2 lectures spouting pre-election propaganda that he disguised as a segment on "thinking like a scientist". He didn't accomplish his goal, and everyone thought he was a real moe from then on. Had to skip fishes because of it.
Ecology is one best classes I've had. Ernie really helped me to spark an interest in the subject. He is absolutely amazing. I wish I could take more of his classes.
I had him for 2nd half of 111. Never knew what info. was really being stressed and what wasn't. Difficult man!
He is very interested in his field so it makes his teaching more fun. He takes pride in his work and does a good job conveying it to his class. Overall I liked him.
I was interested in Ecology until I had Szuch. Arrogant and unhelpful. Tests are confusing. Unless you can suck up to him then forget about trying to be on friendly terms with this guy. Lectures are good but beware if you ask questions, he is condecending. BIO dept would be better w/o him.
A very interesting lecturer, can always hold your attention. Tests were unnecessarily confusing, and graded hard.
Excellent lectures-very engaging and parallel the outlines he hands out exactly. If you go to class, take good notes, and study them very well, the exams are not impossible at all.
HORRIBLE
This guy is a complete ass, on one tests, Intro to Biology mind you, over 50% of the class failed and he said it was our fault. If you try to talk to him he treats you like crap and makes you feel sub human. His lectures are actually interesting, but he comes across very arrogant and seems like he gets paid to fail students to weed them out of Bio.
A horrible mannered teacher. Doesn't care about his students, nor his appearance. He treats the students like their idiots and refuses to help.
Very arrogant, not very helpful because you're afraid to ask. Difficult in lab and lecture. Brace yourself!
Very clear in lecture. Nice guy and is serious about the subject.
How and why is he still teaching? I would rather bash my finger with a hammer than talk to this arrogant jerk! He is the most cockiest person and does not belong interacting with students. Tests are ridiculously hard, and he includes way too information for them. (Frustrating!!!)
People complain about him, but he is not that bad. His tests can be hard but if you study, you will be fine. He is not that hard to talk to if you understand him. He is EXTREMELY funny, and people have left that out of his ratings.
He's not that hard, maybe a little difficult at times. he's old school and doesn't know how to use technology very well. However, easy or hard, he cares nothing of his students. I mean honestly, He'll teach, but good luck if you want extra help, he wants nothing to do with you. PS, if family dies or job inteferes, good luck, it's your fault!! no j
Makes you seem like a fool if you ask questions. Not understanding at all and doesn't accomodate for student needs.
All the respect for this guy coz he respects your mind. So passionate about his subject, sincere and fair. Has a great sense of humor. Can't hide his disgust of slackers. Tests are tricky but you'll be fine if you study well.
Outstanding professor for the student who is willing to put in the effort to succeed. I think he comes off as harsh for some because he is very direct so keep that in mind when heading into his lecture/lab.
He can be very difficult at times. i was scared to ask questions because he made you feel like an idiot if you did. But there is ALOT of outside study time required. If you get an A in the lab section you will do well in the class.
Good professor. Gives you a little hell if you ask him a question for something he just went through, but he will eventually answer it. Challenging class and exams are tricky, but read the book and study once in a while and you'll do fine.
He is a good prof when teaching the material and you walk away learning a lot but the exams are pretty hard. The questions are worded in a difficult manner. If you can work hard and master his exams you will do great.
He is fun to listen to, and he is very fair in the exams, great with questions after class but don't ask during lecture or he makes you look like an idiot for asking that question.
He's fun to listen too and very funny at times, i wouldn't ask him a question in-front of the class because he will make a fool out of you but i hear if you visit him during his office hours he's much nicer its almost like he puts on an act in the lecture hall but don't let him fool you.
I liked professor Szuch. He really knows his stuff, and I went to his office and he was great help. I passed with an A without even reading the book, so it's not totally necessary to buy it.
So difficult!!!
Very funny and interesting class! A lot of people say the class is hard, but as long as you study your notes and understand the material, exams are easy to ace. Go to class and don't procrastinate. A lot to memorize.
There's a lot of info to learn, but he's a good professor. He doesn't take BS, so if you're late to class or sleeping through it, don't expect him to answer your questions. I like that he's strict and has high expectations for his students. He made lecture entertaining with his sarcasm and anecdotes. Definitely taking his classes in the future!
Ernie is great!
Not an easy class. Not particularly approachable. He'll answer questions in class, but he'll often be mean about it. Very passionate about what he teaches. He covers a lot of material, and still manages to make it very entertaining. Think before you speak, or just don't. Work hard and you'll be fine. I loved the class and hope to have him again.
this dude is so hard but his labs are pretty easy though. really understand the material our you are going to fail.
He's definitely tough if you're not on top of things. The exams are objective, so everything you need to know is there for you in black and white. Take thorough notes and you'll be golden.
Hard class, but doable. I studied more for that class than any other and managed a C. Ernie is a good teacher, he makes class interesting and fun. He is very passionate about the subject, so if you ask a question, know what you're asking about or he will make you look like an idiot. Take through notes and you will be fine.
Exams are ridiculously hard. He intentionally tries to trick you. He makes you feel like an idiot if you ask questions. Doesn't care if students learn. The avg on exams were 55-60. He comes off as an arrogant jerk (which he is) and really isn't concerned with teaching as much as hearing himself talk.
Many people don't like him at all, but I think he's a great professor. He's passionate about what he teaches. Seems like a jerk in lecture, but VERY willing to help students during lab and study sessions. He gives you everything you need in lecture, but you need to study hard b/c to take his tests and do well you need to know your stuff!
You can't be afraid of him. He is loud and passionate, but if you don't get something - GO TO THE HELP SESSIONS! He will explain it until you understand it - but you have to TELL him you don't get it. And always ALWAYS do the THOUGHT SET QUESTIONS!! (record lectures, he talks fast)
Ernie is an excellent prof. BIO111 is an entry level science class - focus is presenting college level mat'l, comprehension & application from Day 1. He teaches thru lectures - you can't multi-task Facebook or IM; you gotta learn to take notes. Great foundation for what is to come, esp if interested in pursuing healthcare field. Tough, but fair
As a Transfer student, this class seemed easy to me. But it was by no means my first college science class, so I think I has a leg up on most of the other students. Szuch attempts to be a good teacher, but in truth he no no respect for student and acts like they are always out to "get him". I wanted to like the man, sadly I just didn't.
A lot of students hate him, and I don't really get why. He's funny and if you take good notes and study them you'll do fine. I like Ernie, his lectures are fun and he's nothing like what so many kids on this site make him out to be.
I've taken the class twice with different professors and Ernie is by far the most interesting and animated. He puts a lot of effort into keeping you interested and engaged. His tests are not easy but also not difficult if you are capable of critical thinking. My advice is to buy a good voice recorder so that you can be sure not to miss anything.
He loves to make you look stupid if you don't know something, so you probably shouldn't ask questions. His exams are ridiculous. He tests on the most unimportant concepts. Almost every student fails the exams so good luck if you have him, you're going to need it.
There is a lot of material to retain for each test, if you don't study for a test don't expect a decent grade on it. Ask questions in lab, it's easier to get feedback in a smaller settting.
I don't know why people did so badly in this class. The exams have ten pts extra credit built in, the final has 15. You will have to study, but I just looked over my notes the day before and got an A or A+ on every test. It's really not as bad as people keep making it out to be, if you're a decent notetaker and study you should do just fine.
Ernie is great. He loves to joke around, encourages class discussion and is helpful when asked. Go to class and take good notes because that's where the test material comes from. Get to know him because he isn't that intimidating.
This man may be a decent teacher, but he is a horrible person. Made people cry weekly. I have never been treated so poorly by a professor. I went to his office hours (which he seemed very upset by) and he refused to help me. The guy is obsessed with himself and does everything he can to make you feel like an idiot.
He's very smart and makes his tests very difficult. He does not give any easy questions. His lectures are fast and to the point so you have to be focused. He hates freshman so he is not nice at all if you are a freshman or acting up in class. This was a low level class and I was a freshman so he was not pleasant. Knows his stuff though.
His tests are easy if you study. All the questions are pulled directly out of his lecture notes. If you take good notes, and devote a good amount of time to studying them, youll get an A, easily. He treats 111 as a weeder course to flake off the premed kids who wont be able to make it. If you cant handle 111, by no means can you handle med school.
Coming from a straight A student, you will have to devote every little bit of your free time to this class in order to get an A or B. He designs his tests for failure and the class avg is always around 50% so many people retake the class with another professor. He makes his exams full of trick questions and formatted terribly.
Don't worry, he will be retiring soon.
His expectations are reasonable and are consistently communicated clearly. His tests are not designed for failure, but rather ensure that you comprehend the material (which itself is not exceedingly difficult) rather than just cramming and forgetting everything later. Fascinating class and he's a great lecturer.
He is a fantastic teacher. Hilarious, intelligent, and caring through his "insults." Im going to miss his wild and misunderstood ways.
My favorite professor on campus. It's a shame he's leaving.
