I am Math major w/ CS minor. Not particularly good in CS, but so far all A's in all classes. But this one is killing me. No questions are answered outside the classroom, crude and talks like all of us are stupid. The textbook is written by him, many wordy but useless fillers, lack of detailed examples to follow. Worst of all, he cannot teach.

It's not like you have a choice. He's the only one that teaches this course. His words, he "barks, but does not bite." Book is useless, should be titled Companion to COSC 3320. Word of warning, do not miss his lectures. There are details discussed not in the book. Do the assignments early, because they are on the tests. Good Luck!

He treats every student as if they're stupid. Almost the entire class focuses on things like VMM and Garbage Collection, but he has absolutely no idea how they actually work. Lots of writing in this class, but not difficult to pull an A if you do the work. Presentations are sometimes like watching a train wreck in slow motion. Super disrespectful dude. A huge waste of time and money, you won't learn a thing. He is measurably and objectively the worst CS professor at UH. If I was hanging off the side of a building and the only way to save myself was to take him again I wouldn't do it. He shouldn't be teaching anymore.

I'm impressed how a professor can teach computer science without using or even touching a computer once in the semester. If you want to learn anything, you have to sit in the first few rows. Otherwise, you might as well stay at home, because you won't be able to hear his mumble or see the scribbles on the whiteboard.

The worst CS professor at UH. Doesn't respond to emails, whispers during lectures, and writes too small for a large room. Must study mostly past exams, but even then the TAs are lost while grading your exams. Your grade is a lottery. Interesting subject, horrible professor. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

I have no words. I implore you to take this class with Singh instead. If there is one piece of advice I could give any of you who are about to take this class, it would be to take it with Singh instead. Save yourself the trouble and the headache. You will literally be learning everything from scratch, by yourself. It is not worth it. Take Singh.

If you are taking this class, you are cooked. I do not understand why he is still teaching and nor do I even understand what he is saying half of the class because he talks on 1 volume. Please retire Leiss, please.

I would recommend taking Leiss if you're just aiming for a good grade; however, you likely won't learn much, as it's hard to understand what he says. If you care about truly understanding the material, I'd suggest not taking him. It's probably time for him to consider retirement.

The class lacked computer use, which felt odd for a computer science course. The professor was often hard to hear even with a microphone. Additionally, there seemed to be little flexibility toward students' situations, like with waitlisted students. He told them they should've came first day even though they were waitlisted.

Horrible, horrible experience. The worst CS professor I've taken yet. Tenure's keeping him here, he needs to retire. I'm sure he used to be fine professor but it's just not true anymore. Only graded on 4 exams. You (or maybe some amazing tutor) have to teach you everything. Lectures are 100% useless. Don't waste your money and time and take Singh.

At first it was comedic watching a senile elder limp around a lecture hall and struggle to work up the wind to finish every sentence. Then you remember how much you're paying for this "education." You won't learn (let alone, hear) one single thing from this man, but exams are reused. You need to network to get them, though

Terrible lecture experience, but class is an easy A since his exams and assignments are very similar year to year, 2 giant assignments that need to be printed and turned in in person. Exams are easy if you prepare well.

I'm sure Leiss knows the material well, but he talks very quietly and slowly on top of tiny writing. The lectures were practically not worth attending. The only redeeming quality is there were only 2 assignments and 2 exams to prepare for. You will probably be teaching yourself, as TAs and Prof do not help outside of lecture.

Leiss' "teaching" is a waste of time. Lectures are useless. Course is passable from TAs lenient grading and repeating HWs and exams. Be ready for a treasure hunt to find old material and waste tons of time working on printed 20 page HW twice the semester. Exams open note. Only recommend if you care about passing and not learning.

Heavy workload, only four grades. The two homework assignments are time-consuming. Lectures are traditional and confusing because of the professor's soft speaking volume. He uses past assignments exactly so networking with previous students is key to succeeding. Not recommended if you prefer modern, organized course shells or digital assignments.
