It's really hard to understand him and he doesn't know what you're asking a lot of the time.
Erol is a great guy, but most of the class doesn't know what is going on most of the time. He gets off topic a lot and his English isn't great. The only reason that I have done well in his class is that I spent a lot of time in the math lab. It is difficult to fail though because he gives 50% of missed points back if you correct you tests.
I think he is a great teacher! He gives examples which is what math is about. Yeah, his English isn't so hot but he at least tries! He lets you correct your tests and get 50% or more back on what you missed, who doesnt want that? He is really easy and nice!
yeah Akbas is pretty easy. If you are familiar with math. He lets you revise all your tests and are able to get half back of each question. I barely payed attention and easily got an A in the class
He's a really nice teacher but its really difficult t understand him. I had to go to the math lab a lot because he wasnt very helpful. If you can teach yourself, he's a good teacher, but if u usually need someone to teach you, good luck. He does let you revise your tests though :)
I could hardly understand him through his thick Turkish accent, but the class was really easy. He lets you make up 50% of your tests and i think he curves the final. 0 homework but many take home tests.
Y'all are being harsh on him... although his english is not the best he was very helpful! he cared about the students that CARED about their grade!! just talk to him after class and go to his office... show some effort and u'll do fine!
Yeah you cant understand him at times and he can't understand you at times but he does care about his students. He goes through a lot of examples in class, he does most of them by himself but occasionally he gives one to the class and goes around the room to help anyone who needs his help. He gives homework in class but he also posts it on ulearn.
He's a great teacher!
Although his accent comes to me as 'very thick' he is a very nice and caring teacher. He doesn't like rude students and WILL call you out if you seem to be rude during class. No matter which teacher you get, everyone gets the same work load every week at the mile. Anyways, Akbas is kind and helpful! i recommend him if you're independent on work.
hard to understand. lots of work and projects. doesn't take attendance but you MUST go to every class if you want to keep up. don't take a MWF class...almost always a quiz every friday!!
Mr. Akbas....Going to this class is pointless. You have to teach yourself EVERYTHING in the mile. unfortuately you can only miss two classes. the book is not needed b/c it's online. The mile is GREAT!! he ppl help you with EVERYTHING except test...don't matter what math teacher you take for MATH 1111 b/c all your work will still be done in the mile
He is a great teacher.Always helpful.Explains clearly.
HORRID!Doesn't finish lesson at times, doesn't speak english well and when people ask questions sometimes says, "I'm sorry, I do not understand." Took this math in 10th grade that is the only reason i got a B could have had an A if i wasnt struggling to remember things from years ago since he was barely any help. Really nice guy, horrid teacher
He tries his best to explain the concepts but doesn't get his point across to well. I tried so hard to atleast get a C, but that didn't. Came out with a D :( Went to saturday toturial and his office hours for extra help but that was not too helpful. I suggest taking another teacher if you need someone to thouroughly explain.

wORST.
man cant teach point blank period YOU JUST CANNOT UNDERSTAND THIS UNIBROWED FOOL! I HIGHLY DISCOURAGE ANYONE FROM TAKING HIM UNLESS YOU'RE A NATURAL BORN GENIUS.
OMG,wHOEVER SING UP FOR HIM MADE A BIGGEST MISTAKE. hE CAN NOT TEACH. WORST TEACHER EVER
For precal DON'T BUY BOOK! All of you people who have problems with accents need to chill, it's not that bad. He is not a great teacher but he does not have malicious intent and will help you if you ask. Going to class is mandatory but totally pointless because you self-teach at the MILE. For that reason don't worry if you do end up not liking him.
very good teacher. explains everything as simple as it can possibly get. whoever does not understand the concepts is retarded. i had 3 calculus teachers at georgia state and he is by far the best one
He is a great teacher. He really tries his best to answer questions. And yes, he does have an accent, but it's really not that hard to understand. Calculus is a difficult course. You're going to struggle with it a little, but if you teach yourself, you'll do well, and if you ever need help, he's available during his office hours
Good professor. I have ADHD and I have to say that he is the best professor I've ever had. He makes things clear and if you can't understand it the way that he teaches then you may need think about your major. He is not an easy teacher; but fair. Just Study hard and ask lots and lots of questions!
Best professor ever! Those of you who don't understand his english, did you force yourself to understand? You just don't get the class and blaming on his english.Don't be lazy and study for it.you will get an easy A.
This guy cannot teach! and it has nothing to do with his accent. He is willing to help outside of class but it's useless because you will end up more confused! DO NOT TAKE HIM. I made an A in precalc, but failed calc1 with him.take Valerie miller instead. took it with her the 2nd time, and it feels like 2 different classes.
He's a good teacher. His English is fine. Calculus is not easy, so you have to come to class prepared (read!) to really know what's going on. Still, if you put in the work you should be fine. If you are confused about something, just ask and he will do his best to explain, even if it means taking class time.
Seriously one of the best math teachers I had. He is very patient and very, very nice. Many folks in my class will take calculus II this summer to keep him as a teacher.
The BEST math teacher i have ever had!! IDK why he is rated poorly on this because he is the best. His test are easy, he gives extra credit, and will provide you a little assistance on exams if you ask.
Professor Akbas is a very helpful teacher and truly wants the best for his students. He will answer any questions and will meet with you even after office hours-very compassionate. This class is only rough because of the Math Department.
LIKE PREVIOUS STUDENTS STATED. HE IS VERY HELPFUL AND GENUINELY WANTS ALL HIS STUDENTS TO PASS. VERY PROMPT IN RESPONDING TO EMAILS, COMMUNICATION ON A WHOLE.
Disregard all comments made about him being a bad teacher. People who fail this class fail it because they did not study hard enough. Dr. Akbas rocks. He is arguably the most understanding and helpful math professor at Georgia State.
Super duper easy! If you do not get an A then there is something wrong with you. Gives study guides for test which are the test basically!!!! EASY A ClASS!!!
He is very soft-spoken. He didn't seem to like teaching college algebra, but I wouldn't either if I had a PhD in Mathematics... He is also pretty goofy.
Very soft spoken with a somewhat strong accent. You really need to pay attention to what he's saying to understand him. The way he teaches is fairly straight to the point, but can sometimes can become scattered. Go to the MILE, get more in-depth help (if you need it) from them.
Dr. Akbas was a wonderful instructor. He was very clear with his explanations, as well as conveying new concepts.
Dr. Akbas was an amazing professor! id take him for any high level math class because he does make you do homework and grades everything fast. He helps out students with grades alot and even extra credit. Probably best math professor i had at this school.
he is a very good teacher. Took him summer 2012 for linear algebra. He made this class really easy. He will help you with any problem. He tells the students what to study for the test. Make sure you study what he tells you for the test. Best Math professior I have ever had, and I am a math major. TAKE him
Awesome Professor. Good camaraderie. Very skillful in conveying concepts.
He is extremely helpful at any time you need assistance whether in class or help needed for an outside class... gives homework and exams are exactly what he says they are. Tell you and what to study. Gives many examples during class...
Mr.Akbas is a great teacher and is very helpful. He gives out excellent homeworks and practice tests that really help you do well on the exams. Althrough calculus is not easy he organizes the class in a way that makes it easier to learn and to retain knowledge.
I like hm. He makes sure that he goes over everything in class and will clarify if you have a question. He has no problem meeting up with you after a test to show you what you did wrong. As long as you do the hw and pay attention you should be fine on the tests.
He's a great professor. He explains well. I'm not good at math, but made me enjoy the class and broke it down so that calculus is understandable. He writes great notes. Study the notes, past HW, and past tests. You'll get an A. (If you're good at math)
Dr. Akbas is my favorite teacher that I've had at GSU so far. He's a fantastic teacher and his class is super easy. He's a quick grader, weekly homeworks will be given back the next class, and tests given back in one or two classes. Easy A+ if you know the material
Dr. Akbas is a great professor! He gives you great notes, but you do have to pay attention in class and you have to do graded homework-which he is lenient on. If everyone does badly on the test, he gives extra credit. There were 4 tests and a final. He gives study guides that really help on the test.
Professor Akbas is the best math instructor I've ever had. During class he works projects all notes and examples on the board as he slowly and meticulously explains all steps. He later posts these notes to D2L so you can print them out. This almost entirely eliminated the need to take notes in class. Which made it much easier to absorb the material

Wonderful professor! Truly wants his students to succeed. I highly recommend taking him for Calc 2. He puts all the notes online & very helpful sample tests and study guides. Easy class if you put forth the effort. He does take attendance so you have to go to class.
Wonderful professor! He is very helpful, clear, and fair. Posts his notes, study guides, and practice tests online, as well as the answers to homework and tests once they have been graded. Calculus 2 is not an "easy" subject, per say, but Dr. Akbas makes it seem that way. He is great at explaining it in a way that makes sense. Highly recommend! :)
Best teacher for those who intend to study or at least try. Does many many examples in class and will help you a lot if you ask for it. Highly recommended!
Great professor! Is very clear and post all his notes online as well as practice tests and study guides. It is not an easy class, but he makes it much better than it could be (I took this class once before and dropped). Overall one of the best professors I've had.
really good teacher, practice test and notes all online and you can reason with him i seriously recommend.
Great teacher notes are useful tests are like study guide.
I am so thankful I took him. He is a very good professor and the tests are just like the study guide and gives good extra credit!
I took his class during a maymester and he was always there for his office hours giving tutorials. He listened to class feed-back on weather or not we were ready for the test and always gave more than one way to solve problems. If you apply yourself you will get an A
Easy professor if you study for exams and do modules. Attendance is mandatory
Professor Akbas is really cool. His tests and quizzes are just like the homework. Attendance is mandatory. His lectures are interesting. Easy A
This class is an easy A if you show up, take notes, and do the homework. His lectures are interesting, but you will be bored if you already know the topic he is teaching. ATTENDANCE is MANDATORY. There are 3 TESTS and 4 QUIZZES. They are very similar to the homework. He gives extra credit on all 3 TESTS.(5-10points). He drops the lowest QUIZ and HW
Great Teacher! Explains the topics in a very clear and concise way and gives lots of examples. There were 3 tests and 4 quizzes, and they were fairly similar to the homework. There's always extra credit on the tests which is a plus. Would Recommend!!
Great teacher. Wish GSU had more like him. Strongly recommend. My friend took a different teacher for calc 3 (Dr. Chakwanda) who didn't even teach triple integrals to his class (Which is a LARGE part of one of the main chapters you cover in the class) which is flat-out disgraceful if you ask me. Take him, he might be hard but its an investment.
Awful professor-don't be fooled by the other reviews. His use of the ALEKS website shows he has no respect for his students--it is awfully time consuming. Strong Turkish accent makes him hard to understand sometimes. Going to class is a waste of time, but attendance is graded.
I recommend. Multivariate calculus. He isnt easy, and the class seems tough, but you will somehow end up with an A no problem. Thats because its a tough subject hes teaching. he does a good job though. Homeowork is optional, attendance is for a grade, but you really need to go to class to learn the material, 4 tests and comp. final, lots of extra c
Study guides are exactly like the tests, just with different numbers. 10 points extra credit on each test. HW every week, easy class but ALEKS (online assignments) is a HUGE waste of time and it doesn't even help in the class, but you need it for the grade.
Professor Akbas is an incredible professor! He explains concepts clearly and is extremely enjoyable and understanding. For me, his class was test-based. That being said, he prepared students with MORE than enough to succeed. He also provided additional materials online (which were really helpful). I would definitely recommend taking him.
I took this class online. No textbook, but you do have to pay for access to the online material. Dr. Akbas responded very quickly to all emails. There are 2 EC assignments. Difficulty is that of a typical math class, so as long as you practice and review the material you should be fine.
I took a summer semester online course of 1101. It is just like any other math class. The access code for the online textbook is pricey but all the hw, quizzes, and exams are on it. All of the math problems are kinda repetitive. You'll see the same problems from study guides on the tests just a slight number change. A simple class. Not too extra.
I am currently taking Akbas for Calculus I, and he is a good professor. Explains concepts in detail and available during office hours.
Professor Akbas has a very heavy accent. He is very nice and will work to help you, but overall I really did not like his teaching style. I would never encourage someone to take his class, respectfully.
Dr. Akbas teaches very well. Sometimes it is hard to understand him, but most of the time he speaks clear English. His lectures and notes are very helpful. He posts a sample test before each Real Test. That is very nice of him to do that. Sample Tests are very similar to the Real ones. So don't be a procrastinate on it. The class is pretty easy.
Hes very nice, but he knows when to be strict if you dont pay attention in class. As long as you pay attention in his lectures and dont goof off, youll like him. His tests arent so hard either because he gives you a study guide thats very similar to the tests. Know the procedure of doing the problem, and youre good.
Great class. Recitation helps a lot. Easy to understand just have to work a bit.
He definitely cares about your grade and will lend assistance during his tests. He will let you keep working on tests if you came in late and is always willing to offer and allow second chances. He definitely tries to give points on any test, quiz, and homework answers possible. He does have a slight accent but nothing that isn't understandable.
This class was my easiest of the semester. He really taught the material well and pretty much gave you the test before bc his study guides were spot on. I really just showed up and did the homework and was fine
the best math teacher i ever had. if you have any questions, just email him and he will response you back asap.
Dr. Akbas is extremely difficult to understand. I spent half the semester believing he was talking about a "unicycle," not the "unit circle." Obviously very knowledgeable but very poor at teaching a lower-level math class. I relied heavily on the textbook, made fine grades on the test, but attendance and homework are a crucial part of your grade.
Calc 1 is not hard, but it's not easy either. Dr. Akbas's notes, sample tests, and study guides helped a lot. A very nice guy who is willing to help his students above and beyond. I am gonna be honest with y'all rn. YES, HE HAS AN ACCENT. BUT I PROMISE U THAT OUT OF 100%, HE ONLY HAS 25% OF IT. HIS ENGLISH IS CRYSTAL CLEAR 75% OF THE TIME.
Hes a great professor. Took him for calculus 1 in a fall semester. His study guides and practice exams for each exam give you a clear indication of what youll be tested on.
do the damn study guides - show up to class and lab - aleks kinda sucks (online) but ...
This class is an easy A if you show up to class/recitation because attendance and recitation activities is counted towards your grade. His tests are super easy because he posts a sample test that will look exactly like the test but with different numbers, sometimes even the same problems. ALEKS homework is difficult so just do as many as you can.
Go over all the study guides! Don't miss class (especially recitation)! Do as much as you can in ALEKS and don't wait till last minute to start. Awesome grader and gives lots of extra credit!! Take him!!!
The hardest class I've ever taken! The professor wasn't any help at all. Almost everyone failed. There's a TON of homework!!! I don't recommend this class at all.
This professor is good at making his thought process clear. Partial Credit galore. Lots of homework online but it prepares you for the tests which are easier questions.
His lectures are great and he is always willing to help out a struggling student. He gives a lot of homework, but they prepare you for his exams. He gives 4 tests and a final with weekly recitation quizzes. He also gives a LOT of extra credit, which helps out a lot at the end of the semester. Definitely a solid and understanding math professor.
This is supposedly the hardest math class one could take, however, Akbas is very specific on what he expects for every test. If you're short on time the sample test will get you an A, but the recitation activities will ensure you get over a 100 on every test.
Amazing professor! Calc 2 is one of the hardest math courses, but he made it doable and worth it. He really cares about his students. He posts sample tests, so if you work through them, youre almost guaranteed a good grade because theyre so similar to the actual test. He also gives out a lot of extra credit! Take him!!
He is a really, really great professor. He is straightforward. He gives a situation, and you end up always a certain equation for it. He is a bit a quiet, but not to point where you have to be in the first row. He is color coordinated and posts his notes to Icollege.
Good professor. I had taken Calc I a couple of years back so it was hard for me at first since I had forgotten most of the material. However, he gave us a number of extra credit opportunities and was very caring about his students. Study his practice tests and you are guaranteed at least a B.
Professor Akbas is by far the best professor I have ever had. I have had him for calc 2, calc 3 and I am going to be taking him for differential equations. His tests are very easy if you do the sample exams and his online homework has unlimited amounts of attempts. He wants you to understand how math works besides just knowing how to do it.
Worst proffesor ever. Speaks sooooo low that you can barely understand him. Asked him multiple times for why I got a bad grade and only insulted me instead of helping me usefully. Do nottttt take there are so many better math proffesor at this school
This guy is the real deal. He speaks kind of low so be sure to sit in the front rows. He expects you to know the material but if you do Webassign and pay attention during lecture you can succeed in his class. I took him for Calc 2 and Calc 3 and I am now in his Linear Algebra class. I have really enjoyed my time in his classes.
Best ive had.
Couldn't have asked for a better teacher honestly! 4 tests, a final and 6 quizzes. All are based on the sample tests online and are graded out of 110. The extra credit really comes through at the end of the semester! The class can feel really long and boring but his notes are aesthetic and he puts it online. Easy A if you try even a little!
Lectures are heavy. Too many quiz. Never respond to the emails. No extensions for homework. No make up for quiz. Tough Graders.
He is the best Math Professor. He cares about his student's grades and does everything for a student to succeed. He has Quizzes every week but gives some extra points on every quiz. He extends the homework if needed. Although his lectures are boring, if you know the concepts, you will easily pass his class. I would recommend taking him for Calc.
Akbas class is pretty decent. We have a quiz every week and a test about every every 2-3 weeks. All Akbas tests are on Lockdown Browser so its impossible for you to use gadgets or anything. We have about 4-8 hw on webassign every week and he gives extension if needed. We have 3 EC quizzes which is also on Lockdown browser.
I did not have a good experience with this class. Professor was kind of all over the place, and did not explain the concepts thoroughly enough. Questions on the exams were not gone over in the lecture. Would probably not take Akbas again, at least not for statistics.
this class fr took up majority of my time and stress-level. only quizzes/tests to determine final grade. tough grader, takes off points for the smallest things. no hw to give extra padding to the grade. barely any extra credit. really tough class and professor. would not recommend.
One of the most frustrating professors I have ever had to deal with. While he clearly understands the content, his teaching habits and grading style do not allow for any leeway or flexibility in assignments and problem-solving (i.e. his way or the highway). Very good at responding to emails and students' concerns though.
I took Calculus my senior year of high school, and I feel that I learned just as well in this class as I did in person in high school. The tests are tedious, but no more difficult than the content. The homework load isn't awful. You may be able to find better calculus professors (I wouldn't know, I'm a freshman) but this professor is a solid choice
Amazing professor. This was the second class I took with this professor. His teaching style is amazing and he clears every doubt a student has. He acknowledges the student's struggles and gives extra credits whenever necessary.
This was his first time teaching the class so I understood that it would be difficult but did not except it to be this difficult. If in future you have to take this class you might do better than me because he is a good teacher but was difficult to learn from.
Professor Akbas was a good professor when he taught in class, but online it is a different story! I had him for Calculus II and while he was great and I even got a good grade in his class, I suffered in this class. Even studying for the quizzes and tests like no other, he still managed to break me. He should definitely stick to teaching Calc instea
His recitations are GOLD; those will prepare you for everything in his class (quizzes, tests). 1 REALLY SHORT quiz/week made me uncomfortable first, then I appreciated it. Lectures are unique: 0.25x speed , SAY NO to boring PowerPoint, nice hand-writing, always allow you to ask, miss a lecture?-> he would record every lecture.
Cares for students
I took before COVID in person. Seems like he understand material but doesn't explain it well in my opinion. Basically teaching yourself. Quiz every week on the topic that class. Great if you understood but very bad if you didn't. Asked for help multiple time and he said I should know already. Last I spoke with him he told me to just retake CALC 1
Would recommend using outside resources for this course for practice/learning the material if you take it with this professor.
don't take him.
No HW , but quizzes every which can be difficult and even though he gives you study for them. He give you opportunity to pass if you close with extra credit
Second time I take this class and I still didn't learn anything of value and he does not teach in the best format. Just get ready for slow lectures (except for the end of a section and the last 15 min of class, he just speeds through it) and a lot of questions. Also there is no cushion for grades so the quizzes and test all matter. Good Luck
I took him online. Quizzes every Monday, 3 tests, 3 extra credit for the test, lots of homework. IF your final is higher than the lowest test, then the lowest test will be replaced with the final grade. He also drops the lowest quiz. He is very nice, understandable, empathetic professor.
He is a wonderful professor, gives tons of extra credits after test. Also, his tests are similar to the questions he gives for reviewing the material. I would suggest this him for this class. Only one quiz per week, and no homework, but he does give practice problems from the textbook with solutions.
Professor did not keep up with the syllabus schedule. Seemed more interested in starting academic cases against students rather than releasing assignments and study guides on time.
Do not take this professor for online. He does not take the time to teach!
He has a quiz weekly, but it usually covers what he has taught and it won't be heavy if you focus. He will allow you additional time to finish homework if the material of that week is heavy. He explains every problem very well, so you don't even need to ask him again. Weekly quizzes prepare you well for the upcoming test.
Amazing & caring Professor. If you want to learn, take Prof. Akbas. It is critical that you study the lecture notes. The lecture notes & the examples in it are GOLD as well as the practice problems. I cannot state that enough. The quizzes/exams are based on these. To get all points, show your work just like Dr. Akbas shows his work in the lecture.
Prof. Akbas is amazing and you will learn. Study the lecture notes. The lecture notes & the examples in it are GOLD as well as the practice problems. The quizzes/exams are based on these. You have to practice the problems. To get all points in the quizzes and exams, show your work just like Dr. Akbas shows his work in the lecture.
He was the worst professor for MATH 3020. He was paranoid with his class about cheating during the pandemic. It did not make any sense for him to be so offense to his class. He graded people tough and made the class harder than it should be. Avoid Him.
Professor Akbas is one of the best professors I have ever had, he is super helpful and cares about his students. he is more than willing to help you inside and outside of class. I took his math140 class at PSU Harrisburg and am mad he doesn't teach math141. Highly recommend. I failed this class twice before passing it with professor Akbas.
I have always struggled with math and I feared not being able to pass calculus because I was struggling so much. I talked to Dr. Akbas and he made arrangements to stay after his regular schedule and work with me. He genuinely wants to get to know his students and help them do well, so go to his office hours!! Very nice man and a great professor.
Doesn't teach the material in class that relates to the textbook or homework given in WeBWorK. If you haven't taken pre-calc or calculus in high school, be prepared to suffer. You will be in Tutoring 24/7.
1 HW assignment followed by 1 quiz each week. Quiz questions are similar to HW questions. He often tells you the types of questions that will be on the test so you know what to review. He provides most formulas on tests/quizzes so not much memorization. He will also offer extra credit quiz after each test if the class needs it.
Teacher @Penn State Harrisburg DONT TAKE THIS CLASS -very lecture heavy and goes super fast with material -gives alot of homework that doesnt relate to the weekly quizzes -has open availability in office hours to help but sometimes doesnt explain correctly -takes off unnecessary points on quizzes and test that bring your grade down by alot.
goofy. I just taught myself the material
Great professor! He explains well and you will learn Cares for students.
Amazing Professor!
Quizzes every friday, if there is no quiz then you have a test. He is VERY helpful on quizzes and tests. I asked a question on a quiz and he literally wrote down the answer for me, do not be afraid to ask questions on tests and quizzes. Also told us which questions to expect on the final.
I took this class in fall 2020 online and Professor Akbas did an okay job. His lectures are quite boring online but I think I would have had an easier time if I were in person. However I did miss the FINAL exam (was having some personal issues and literally forgot oops) but he let me take it a couple hours late when I realized--which was so sweet.
Don't take this guy, trust me. If you take his class, you will have to teach yourself everything.
Knows his stuff well, lectures are meant to build intuition on the topics in the homework and on exams. Very good pick for Calc I.
Erol Akbas is a good professor for Calc I. His lectures build intuition, and he provides helpful resources like weekly quizzes and extra credit opportunities. unstuck AI is a great study tool to complement the class materials.
