Seems easy, but is very unwilling to help students. Very short and curt when I asked questions during his office hours. Made me feel stupid and he was unwilling to help me understand. Test questions are fairly broad, but he is expecting specific answers. Definitely will avoid him in the future.
Class is interesting. I thought I had a good understanding of the material until tests came. He expects you to answer the question exactly like he would. Very difficult!
I actually looked forward to going to his class and learned more about the english language in just one lecture than all of my highschool career. There is a lot of note taking and if you study them before the quiz you will do GREAT. His grading is fair and not harsh. The essays were easy and short.
This professor is awesome. I love going to his classes because they're funny and very interesting. He tries to be serious but can't stop himself from laughing at small things. His lectures are really interesting and i actually look forward to attending them. Easy quizzes and essays if you study.
He is not only of the best teachers out there, but also one of the most intelligent professors period. He has a lot of knowledge on the topic and is willing to share it with everyone. I love how he trys to be serious at times but can't stop from pulling a joke. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
great guy, very smart. seems to really care about what he's teaching. wants everyone to do good. lots of reading, but its not too bad.
Seaton is not very helpful, and he will laugh at you if you try to respond to a question he poses. It's impossible to give the "correct" answer. Don't bother with this class if Seaton is the prof. It's a waste of your time and your GPA.
Seaton is a very intelligent person but as a professor is very difficult. He expects students to use his exact terminology for tests and papers which is difficult to do and gives you limited freedom to think for yourself.
Very intelligent prof with a very interesting grasp on the material presented in his course. However, I echo what everyone says about the tests: miss five questions for the whole quarter and you've probably got yourself a 'B'. Ridiculous.
This prof is horrible! I thought I had an understanding of the material and then I go to take the test and I do horrible! The class has only 100 points, all tests and so if you miss barely any questions you will do horrible in the class. If you ask him a question he answers with, "well what do you think" ALWAYS. People, wouldn't be asking questions if they knew the answer!!!!
REALLY boring class, Seaton does nothing to make the material interesting. Reading the Bible for historical accuracy? Even he says it's not accurate. Test questions are so specific and particular, ridiculous. 100 point class for 5 cr? Give me a break. Take it if you like busting your bum for a C.
This class is really boring and Seaton isn't very helpful at all. Tests are very hard, and if you aren't very specific answering a question you'll lose half the points for it. Avoid this class!
The low amount of points possible make the class a bit difficult, but if you actually do the work and pay attention it's not too bad. Overall he does a great job teaching the material and adds an intruiging and unique perspective to everything. Not a class to skate through but you are given the possiblility to learn a ton!
Was my forth class related to mythology, in specific Greek mythology. He is not very good with the background of the stories, he confused the characters religiously. Horrible grader. Also he would ask the class about how to ask a good test question. A teacher.. TEACHES?. Only take if you love LBRL - otherwise, this is the WORST CHOICE.
hes the worst teacher i have had, and this is my second year. His tests are ridiculously difficult and hes not helpful with questions during class. He laughs at everything, even complaints. Don't take this class with him. He pretty much just sucks.
Professor belittled me when I asked to meet with him to see why I got a 48% on the first exam. Basically told me I was a moron and everything he says is right. Straight A student getting a D in this class...If you're taking it for a GUR, don't. Seaton is a pompous jerk.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!! horrible teacher! The whole class is worth 100 points and the class average is usually about a 10 on the four tests given making your final grade not so hot. Laughs at you whenever ideas are outside of his own. If you have this class get out now!!!!
This was probably the hardest professor I've ever had. Very unclear about quizzes/tests.
This class would be excellent, IF Mr. Seaton was banned from ever teaching again. I have never been so offended by a professor before in my life! He laughs at every concept outside of his own tiny mind and made me feel from Day One like either A, dropping the class, or B, just throwing a chair at him. I beg of you, do not take this class from him!
During registration last quarter, I saw the rating for Seaton. I did not heed to the warnings of soon to be fellow victims. This was a huge mistake. Believe me, everything that is said in his ratings are completely true, plus 100. He is a mean S.O.B. who is unbelievably inconsiderate and childish. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS! I beg of you.
I found his class very interesting, and he was very informed on the subject. Some people claim that he is mean and childish however having experienced what they are probably talking about, the students were the childish and irresponsible ones. This isn't an easy class but a good one, and Mr. Seaton in very helpful and kind.
Awful. I'd go into tests understanding everything, and then the questions would be completely different from what he said-require more silly, SPECIFIC trivia than actual thought. This class is not challenging in the good way, it's just painful. Take it if you like hurting yourself...otherwise STAY AWAY. It's not worth ruining your GPA over!
Interesting material, jerk professor. Tests are made up of multiple part questions with completely unrelated parts, automaticaly penilizing you if you don't know obscure specifics. Often there are questions either unrelated to lecture, or irrelivent to the texts. Problems with presentation assignment in all his classes at end of quarter.
Awful teacher!!! Would haul ass through all the material, not explain it for****, and then expect you to ace the test. He would try and explain things, but everything he explained, you can understand. But that won't help you at all on the tests! Impossible to figure out what he wants/looks for, hard to study for tests..
I was warned in the first week of this class that I should drop it because Erroll Seaton was unfair and ridiculous. I ignored this suggestion because I liked him. However, after taking tests that question the most minute aspects of the stories we read and experiencing his utter mental instability, I have to say, this guy is a terrible teacher.
Don't be fooled by positive comments. You WILL regret taking this class. It seems like a very interesting class at first, but Seaton quickly snaps that away. If you care to study for 20 hours a week for this class and still get a B-, then I suggest this class otherwise, YOU'VE BEEN WARNED.
Not too bad, as long as you memorize the sections he says will be on the test. He does tell you what is coming, though it is really easy to glaze over inane details. Do not get behind in the reading.
The material is interesting, but if you don't interpret it like he wants, get ready for a low score. Low points total makes the class somewhat challenging, but if you keep up on the reading it is not that bad. BEWARE OF HI GRADING. IT IS RIDICULOUS. DON"T EXPECT TO ACE ANYTHING.
Bah, most people are right in their evaluations of Errol. The topics are interesting, but he doesn't teach to let students make their own judgements on them, but rather preach (and test you on) his personal interpretations. Even if you can justify your position, it doesn't matter in his mind- you're still wrong. I DO NOT recommend Errol Seaton.
This is by far the worst teacher that I have EVER had. We read very challanging books that he didn't explain at all and then put very pointless details on the tests. This is the ONLY class in my life where I have ever recieved a C! It's not worth it! You have been warned, I didn't listen but I hope you will!
Professor Seaton is actually a pretty nice guy if you go and have a chat with him. His class, on the other hand, is absolutely ridiculous. I gave up going after the second test.. even if you read everything and go to every lecture, if your opinions are different than his you'll be marked down. His curve is huge; i was failing but ended up w/ a C+
Despite how most people feel about Errol Seaton, i happened to like the guy. He was funny, laid back, and wasn't as tough as some of the others have made him sound. For God's sakes, he pulls questions for the test directly off the study guide. If you come to class, and take the notes he WRITES DOWN on the board for you, you'll be fine.
Seaton is not bad at all. A good sense of humor and an interesting style. If you write down whats on the board thats exactly whats on the test. the required books are interesting too. The negative comments are most likely from first quarter freshman who couldn't handle the rude awakening
I loved this class, but I did not like the teacher. Whenever I tried to talk to him outside of class he treated me like I was stupid, and would stare blankly. I also saw him make fun of students on many occasions in front of the whole class. Be prepared to write down everything he says - thats all he cares about, not YOUR thought.
on the surface he seemed like he accepts more then one correct answer, but if you dont exactly get the answer he is looking for, he tells you that you are wrong, but tries to help you figure it out. i did not like this class, even though i was excited at first to take it.
The class is really not difficult. If you are interested in this subject (and he expects you to be) you'll do fine. I kept up on the reading, took notes, never studied once, and got an A on every test. I guess he might come off as a little intimidating to a freshmen. He won't hold your hand through the material, but he will guide you.
I thought the class would be good at first, but I really did not like the teacher. He says he is opened minded, but laughs at you if you have a different opinion than his. Tests are difficult and graded harshly.
At first i ABSOLUTELY did not like Errol, but as the class went on, he wasn't so bad. He gives tells you some of the exam questions, and example prompts for the writing part, so it's not unbearable. make sure to keep up on the reading, and take notes.
Seaton is a jerk, plain and simple. All the other reviews sum him up pretty well so all I have to say is DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS WITH SEATON!! That is - unless you want a condescending professor who acts like he is a kindergarten teacher. I'm usually too lazy to rate professors but I'd hate for anyone to step on this landmine of GPA shrinkage.
The worst prof in my four years of college. He will ridicule you if you do not think the same way as him. Only C I EVER received in school. On one test, he FAILED (as in F) over 60% of the class. Doesn't that mean he is doing something wrong? I hope Western gets a clue and cans this jerk.
I can see why people wouldn't like him. He can be intimidating but he means well. you cant just BS your way through this class. You have to keep up on the reading and participate in the discussions. It is not an easy class but you learn tons. he wants to be helpful but doesn't want to just hand you the answers
No, I am not a fan of Seaton. He gives very unclear guidelines for papers and is never helpful when you ask him questions. He also likes to put put people on the spot. Not a professor I would recommend taking for Honors.
Errol Seaton is a true professor. He's very intelligent and the way to understand him is if you are half intelligent yourself. I do enjoy attending his classes and yes regardless of what others say/think, i would recommend this Ricky Ross looking teacher. His style is fun, his personality/laugh is funny, and he's overall just a really smart guy.
He is an awkward character. Class grade was based on 4 essays. The questions are really hard, and have multiple points that you are supposed to connect. However, I've found that he grades these essays fairly easily (I study an average amount and get ~88s) He laughs at answers to his questions, so I keep my mouth shut in class.
He is a really really good teacher. I wish I could have him for all my LBRL classes. He keeps my attention in class and clarifies anything that I want clarified. Do the reading slowly, take notes, think a little bit, then go to office hours and ask him questions.
I really like Errol Seaton! He definitely has his own opinions so class discussions can be a bit controversial, but he means well. His grading system is average: not too hard and not too easy. He is EXTREMELY helpful on papers! He'll give you tons of advice so I'd recommend going to talk to him. He giggles as a kind of nervous tic, but it's cute.
Really liked him! His giggling is just a strange habit, not anything directed at a particular student. He has his own opinions but it leads to good discussions. Super helpful when it comes to papers! Go talk to him during office hours. Overall, I loved his class!
Worst Professor I have ever had. I would never recoomend taking one of his classes. If you see his name run away! He is highly opinionated and doesn't care about students at all. I loved the class but hated him. He made my learning experience unbearable. Do not take his classes you will regret it!
Seaton is a great Prof. He is nice and loves input from the students. He really enjoys what he teaches, which is refreshing! He gives students a study guide before exams they tells the student EXACTLY what to study. Read the material and pay some attention and you will do well. I would take this class again for sure!!
I can't believe the negative reviews- Seaton is one of the most caring and interesting Profs that I've had in the past three years. Some of the comments reference 'laughing at students'- my advice? grow the eff up. This 'laughing' is not directed at any one student, but seems more like a nervous tic. Anyone putting in effort will enjoy this class.
Great professor! He is very intelligent and easy to listen to. I am never bored in this class despite it is a longer one, he makes it very interesting. The content isn't easy and the tests definitely take some studying, but he is great with answering questions and clearing up anything you don't understand. I love this professor!
Great professor, interesting lectures, good sense of humor.
I went to his office hours to get help sometimes to try and understand the 1700's literature to which he just continuously made me read over and over again till I could try and answer my own question. I would not recommend this class for people who don't understand older literature (like me).
Studyguides do not prepare you for tests. Not enough time on tests. Many awkward pauses in class, tries to get students to answer questions, won't teach it. Unrealistic expectations. Lots of writing: inconsistent with work and difficulty level of other 100-level classes. Grades based on whimsy. Randomly marks off points. Must agree with professor.
The study guides DO NOT HELP WITH THE TEST! And, he is not clear at all what-so-ever. There's only 4 assignments, and that determines your grade. I do not recommend this class to anyone.
The study guides DON'T help with the tests (assignments) at all. Don't rely on the study guides to get you through the tests. Only 4 assignments determine your grade, and they cover a wide variety of topics. Not only is the material dry, but Seaton doesn't even try to make it relavent or interesting. He talks VERY quietly; sit up front in class.
If you do the reading and go to class you'll do fine. He has an ULTRA dry sense of humor so unless you catch on that hes joking he may seem mean. He also has a nervous laugh, he is in no way laughing at you. I had him for LIB 123 and it was wonderful. I would recommend him to anyone.
Seaton was a wonderful Professor. Go to class, read, and participate. That'll get you a good grade.
Prof. Seaton is a great guy with a good sense of humor, and his lectures are straight-forward and make a good amount of sense. The problem, however, is the exams. The study guide DOES NOT match what's on the actual test. He will have you study general ideas, then ask specific questions. This class would be perfect if the exams were tweaked a bit!
He's a nice guy, and obviously loves what he teaches. That being said, its a hard class to get through. His study guides are USELESS and his expectations are really high. He doesn't teach so much as he expects you to figure it out yourself, which made the class really stressful and frustrating.
Seaton seems like a nice guy but he is not meant to be a teacher. He is never prepared for class and only does lecture. I definitely do not recommend this teacher
I love the subject matter of the class, but Seaton is ridiculous. His study guides are useless, and he barely teaches. He just throws the information back at you. Not helpful at all. I will never take a class by him again, and I urge you to avoid his class.
This class may seem easy but it's not. The tests are practically impossible and that is all your grade is based off of. It's all based on what his opinion of the books are, not what the author is actually saying. The books are interesting but he makes them boring. Just not worth the trouble of understanding his extremely confusing opinions.
Well... this class... sucked. Most likely because I was not interested by it and didn't care what grade I got as long as I passed. Lots of boring reading, but it's manageable if you're not lazy (like me). Have fun and praise the Helix!
Does not explain anything at all and expects you to already know everything.
I found his teaching style contradicting and ineffective.
Ambiguous grading system, study guides are random and unrelated to his essay questions. Seaton is abrasive in person, and terse with students that don't pick up quickly on the text. He will make an example out of you, and doesn't mind letting the class sit in awkward silence while he waits for a response. Completely ineffective at communicating.
Dr. Seaton is clearly a very knowledgeable, passionate man on the subject and content of education. However, his tests are unnecessarily hard. I respect his commitment to his ideals and expectations for what should happen in the classroom, but I believe that these ideals are also unrealistic and perhaps unfair to a "100-level" GUR course.
He means well but his teaching criteria is ridiculous. His entire class is lecture based and consists of asking rhetorical questions that he expects answers to and everyone stares at him with blank faces. He gets frustrated when he doesn't understand a student's question and will either glance over it or laugh at the question. Unapproachable.
Tests are extremely tough. You have to know each story down to the bone in order to receive a decent grade. A lot to remember. Study guides aren't super helpful at all. He can be really disrespectful. Tends to laugh at his students and make them feel kinda dumb if they don't know something.
Professor Seaton does know what he's talking about and seems to be interested in it, but I found him to be one of the least inspirational and friendly professors that I've ever had. Because of that, I found going to class and doing the work to be very boring and monotonous. I would say that if you want to take this class, take it with another prof
Seaton is an insanely tough grader. He expects you to remember TONS of minute details in everything you read, even though he says to only study main points. The study guides he gives barely match the tests. He's rude to his students to a ridiculous extent as well and does not provide help. Don't take this class if you can help it.
Professor Seaton is obviously extremely interested in the topic and teaches it quite well. He expects students to try hard but really wants everyone to do good in the class. If you do the readings at the time they are given (you may not want to, but they are short), you will do much better in the class. He really likes when students participate.
This professor is very rude towards his students and expects you to know most of the content already. The readings are confusing, but he explains them well in class. Overall, this class was only a little interesting, but it was uncomfortable as he would often laugh at his students for not answering questions exactly how he wants.
I honestly loved this class, but I can see where students may not like it or the style in which the professor teaches. I like to talk with my professors and participate and I found the subject matter to be interesting. If you speak up, do the reading, and are interested in the class - you will do well. Be prepared to LISTEN and PARTICIPATE.
DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES. He's absolutely terrible. Requires you to have previous knowledge and understanding the material. You're tested with very unclear questions and wants you to remember minute details and what his interpretation of the text was, rather than what you interpreted or what it really meant. Completely ridiculous.
Weird guy Knows his stuff but this class is too difficult for a 100 level course Exam questions are graded impossibly. He expects you to answer exactly how he would so there's hardly any room for interpretation, making it easy to do poorly Laughs weirdly and if he asks the class a q and you don't have the exact answer he wanted Long lectures
You can study very hard, show up to class and still get a bad grade. He is very picky. If your thought process/wording isn't EXACTLY how he would answer (but still correct) your grade will negatively reflect this. He is also unhelpful and disrespectful to certain students. The material was interesting but not worth having to deal with him.
he is a good lecturer, he knows what hes talking about. He can be picky at times with answers but he's a nice professor and he is very knowledgeable. Take lots of notes since he doesn't normally have slides.
Very aggravating teacher. He would entice us to give our own answers to prompts in class, tell us we were wrong, and then answer the prompt in the exact same way. Furthermore he is a hard grader, not very available, not very caring for his students, and overall a rude person.
He is a tough grader, a thing that many don't like which is understandable. But unlike many professors, he actually expects a lot out of his students. So when you do get a good grade, you know it is really earned. I have taken other courses in this department by different professors and prefer Prof. Seaton by far. You just need to do the work.
Dr. Seaton is very confusing and his tests are very hard. He lets the class just struggle along and doesn't provide his own insights even though he expects them on the test. Try to find someone else.
this is the worst. It could easily be a bible study class, or Ancient Civilizations in literature. Most test and quiz questions require you to know exact characters, actions, with no wiggle room. Religious students do very well because they have been studying this already. I'm at a loss. I see no hope for me with his teaching style. KMS
Dr. Seaton is one of my favorite teachers. Yes, he is a tough grader and yes, his tests are hard, but if you put in the work you will pass. Just do the work. Dont expect Dr. Seaton to spell it all out for you his expectations are high because he cares about his students. (Hes also super funny if you enjoy dry wit)
Provides a very unwelcoming environment. Whenever he asks the students discussion questions in class, he is always very dismissive of hearing their ideas. Very set in his ways.
Professor Seaton is a nightmare. He doesn't use Canvas at all so you never know what grade you have. He is also extremely slow when grading tests along with the fact that if you don't give the exact, word for word, answer he is looking for you'll get marked down. I typically like classes like this but I was so bored. Find another professor.
As a 100-lvl course, this class was v difficult. The study guides don't prepare you for the exams & the exam questions are very specific, he will not answer questions directly, & he has a difficult time understanding students' point of view. Advice: if you don't know the answer, write ANYTHING relevant down, he will award you with some points.
Professor Seaton isn't the most awful professor ever. His classes were interesting (to me, at least) and I really like the course material, but he is definitely a hard grader. Passing his class isn't a problem if you attend class and write down everything he says (and actually study it). Bottom line is: attend class and PAY ATTENTION.
I would not take this class again. The course was heavily based upon the Bible in which their was no wiggle room to get names wrong. On top of this, the study guides were made and the tests didnt seem to have that many of the same questions. Missing even just one class is absolutely terrifying because you miss so much information.
I really enjoyed this class and professor seaton! He is a tad scattered and will ask questions but hardly agrees with students answers but does get annoyed if no one answers his questions haha. There are readings every day but nothing crazy or overwhelming as long as you stay on track. Study guides were very helpful for me! Really interesting class
His lectures were a dream. The amount of knowledge he had in the class enhanced my learning experience. If you participate in discussions and read the books, youre bound to get an A.
This dude cracked me up, its like he himself lived in the romantic era. He seems like he really connected with the material. He is a little difficult to take notes from, but has a lovely cadence to his voice.
The class is very boring. You learn from the books. The Holy Bible, Greek Tragedies, and The Aeneid Virgil. If you do not give exactly the "correct" wording you are wrong. Graded on attendance which is 40 points of your grade. There are 3 exams that are 100 points each as well as a final exam that is 140 points. Total possible pointa is 480.
Worst professor I've ever had. If you want to teach on historical literature and myths, you need to be willing to listen to other people's opinions and admit when you're wrong. Especially when the whole class can use both the text AND historical context to support their argument. Only B in my entire university career, straight A's otherwise.
