i too thought the class was harder than the material he covers. lectures were very clear, and the material doesn't seem hard, but study your notes inside and out bc no practice exams. also he's a good artist and he likes to draw a lot, so i had a hard time keeping up with his pace. at first he seems unapproachable, but one-on-one is very nice.
Wow! waaaaaaaaaay too difficult for a GE INTRO class! He does not explain things clearly, especially considering how tricky and specific his test (and quiz) questions are. Definietly made the class not fun
It started off ok..but pretty soon I started hating the class. It is way too detailed, and he makes the tests WAY too hard for an intro class. In fact, because of him I will never consider studying science again and I would not recommend his class. tests and quizzes are excrutiating!! Studying does not get you anywhere, tests are just too hard.
He just makes everything so complicated. Take this class if you want to ruin your GPA. I like Professor Bautista, he is clear in his teaching and lectures well but its just so much information and he makes everything way too tricky. I would never recommend him to anyone who has no science background.
I hate this class and the prof..... so damn hard i should have check more carefully, before enrolled.
I have taken 2 different anatomy/physiology classes before and always did extremely well in them. Not the case with this class. He phrases his questions on tests in a way that it is impossible to figure out what the correct answer is and hes completely rude when you ask for help. He laughed at one of my questions once.
He made this class really difficult. The way he makes his tests is pretty stupid. You will need to put in a lot of time and effort to do good in this class. Lectures were pretty annoying and stuff on midterm was nothing like the lectures. I hated how skips sections from the book in the lectures. Your reading assignment would be like 11.4, 13.9, 5.3
If you are a science major and know most of this stuff then it's pretty easy. But if not DO NOT TAKE IT. I find this class so incredibly hard, it's like learning a foreign language. And the professor doesn't explain very well to us non-hard-core science majors. The more he explains, the more I got confused. And yes, he can be pretty rude sometimes
I thought that attendance was key, as long as you attend lectures you'll do fine. The exams are pretty easy. It's not really about straight memorization, more about fully understanding the concepts. The class it not an easy A but it is reasonable
it might be too much information for non-science majors, but i really liked this class. you need to attend the class and take good notes. you'll be fine then!
prof bautista is very clear and concise when lecturing. however, i still found this class rather difficult. i attended 95% of his lectures and still did bad on his exams. steer clear of this course if you can!
Lectures clear, entertaining. Slides helped, easy to know what was going to be on the exam and what was not. We liked to refer to him as Professor Boyband because of his microphone.
The thing here is that NPB 101 will be hard no matter who you take it with. I took Bautista in a joint class with Jack Goldberg. It seemed like Bautista was *easier* than Goldberg, but this class is all memorizing and applying the concepts. Know everything...
lectures are essential to go to (doesnt really use the book). the pictures and his lectures are pretty clear. grading for labs helps a lot (almost automatic 25%). class average was 75%, which he curved at C+/B-. i ended up with an A with a low C on the 1st midterm & a low B on the 2nd. i recommend him in the end. nice guy & DRESSES GOOD!!
very cool and helpful, easy to approach, fun to talk to.
the science behind the topics are really dumbed-down, since its a class for non-science majors. test only on lectures, you don't need the book at all.
This is a fun class. Professors is enthusiastic and can explain concepts clearly. He writes notes as he explains slides. I think thats cook cuz you can remember mechanism better. Test are not hard as long as you go to class and take good notes. You dont need the book.
Mr. Bautista is pretty much as good a professor as they come. His lectures were clear, concise and interesting even though I'm not a science major. The midterms and final were fairly easy, as long as you paid attention in class because he didn't use the assigned book at all.
he is adorable!!! his jeans fit him well..... oh yeah, and he is a good explainer :) tests are a little tricky, but go to the review session and you'll be fine. he's sooooo cute!
anything tested on is written on the board!
AMAZING. H doesn't require reading, his tests are on what he lectures about. He lectures really well and all I did was read my notes before each quiz and exam and I got a solid A. Definitely know the material he covers and you'll do great. He was the best teacher I have had at UCD.
Class was moderately interesting. He was able to keep the class somewhat entertained with jokes here and there. There was barely and curve due to the high mean. Book isn't needed at all. Just takes good notes and you'll do fine. He takes everything from the notes.
prof knows how to draw/illustrate concepts well. weekly quizzes could be a bit tricky, but he drops your lowest 2 scores. the concepts are interesting, as they can be applied. disc is pretty fun, sometimes a bit boring though. ta's are helpful.
Excellent lecturer! His explanations are almost always crystal clear. His test questions seemed a bit easier than Goldberg's. He is very good
Dr. Bautista is the best professor I've had at Davis by far. His drawings are clear and sometimes explains things better than his slides. His powerpoints are very interesting and he really has command on his subject matter. He never once lost my interest in this class. I would definitely recommend this professor!
Clear lecturer and enthusiastic. Highly recommended.
Dr. Bautista is an amazing professor. It's easy to tell that he really loves teaching.
Very good lecturer. Clearly enjoys teaching. The lectures are very clear and helpful. Test are clear, on the covered material, and are not very hard if you attend lectures and study.
awesome, very clear lecturer as said. midterms exactly from material covered in class
Dr. Bautista is awesome! Midterms are straight forward, just attend lecture and take good notes, you should be fine. You really don't need to buy the book,I'm doing well in the class without the recommended readings. Lecture gets boring sometimes, but somehow he manages to squeeze a joke in there somehow! TAKE THE CLASS!
The best teacher ever!
Great lecturer! His board notes are extremely easy to understand. His tests are pretty easy, just study the lecture notes. His TA uploads the board notes and mp3s of the lectures to SmartSite, so you don't have to worry about missing class. Definitely take this class! Very easy and not boring at all!
prof bautista is awesome! always prepares great lectures, and his TA's post the board notes online. lectures are posted as mp3s and podcasted as well, but the way he teaches made me not want to miss lecture. always keeps my interest, also just a really fun guy. take any class he teaches! oh and he also dresses really well :)
hes hella smart. very articulate and clear in his explanations. really nice drawings
He is an amazing professor. His drawings are very helpful and help you understand processes. The class is extremely interesting. His board notes are very easy to understand [and he's not hard on the eyes either =D]. Exams are straightforward, just make sure you pay attention to statistics, he'll sneak those in there every now and then.
Professor Bautista is very articulate and keeps students engaged. Yet I personally found his tests extremely hard. Professor Bautista makes his lecture notes easy to grasp. Yet, for the test you need to use what you know to problem solve. I would recommend using old tests to practice on if you want an A in the class.
Amazing teacher! He teaches a ton of info in a short time but you come out on the other end actually knowing it, and mostly just from lecture. His slides online are really helpful to have in class too.
He is super nice, doesn't have discussion classes, and super easy!!
He's really clear, tests are easy, no homework, lectures are twice a week, usually cuts his lectures short.
BEST PROFESSOR AT DAVIS BY FAR. he will make everything very clear. go to lecture, study, and you will do well. his tests are tricky but not unfair by any means. he is interesting and makes lecture go by very very quickly! if you don't love bautista then there is something clearly wrong with you!
I really enjoyed his classes, I took two from him because I liked the way he taught, he makes the subject interesting to learn instead of boring.
uses power point. lectures are very clear, tests are straightforward and not very hard. if you go to lectures and study, it's not that hard. Clearly loves teaching
I really had no interest in biology, but he made it somewhat painless. He posts both power points AND podcasts online, which is awesome. There are weekly quizzes, which make you keep up with the material. P.S. He dresses really well.
I am almost failing his class but he is a great professor. His tests just throw me off. but he makes his lectures somewhat interesting...and he tries to make it funny. you have to go to lectures if you want the diagrams that he draws..those are not posted.
He is an awesome lecturer, however, his tests are very tricky. You really have to know all his teachings from the bottom of your heart to get a solid A. Weekly quizes are tricky, but if you go over the lecture slides and pay attention to the picture illustrations you should be fine.
He is a good professor but you really need to study for the tests and the quizzes. I highly suggest reading the book even though you're not required to and use the online book resource. He provides lecture slides and podcasts but you should still go to lecture for all the fancy drawings he makes.
I have nothing against the professor himself, but the class subject was extremely boring. Tests were also tricky, and I'd imagine it's somewhat difficult to get an A.
Bautisa is a great professor. He draws pictures to explain concepts, talks clearly and really wants you to understand. His tests and quizzes are tricky if you dont take notes or go to class, but if you study (which is what he wants you to do, thats why he has weekly quizes) you should be in the a or B range. He is also pretty funny!
What a DIVO!!!! His lectures seem easy but it's not. very similar to NPB101. I studied materials from NPB101 and that was helpful! His tests are very difficult. Don't be fooled by the lectures. The class was out of 125 points. (
This class is super easy! His midterm is based straight from lectures. Just study the material, don't cram and you'll get an A. Very interesting class!!
i absolutely learned the most in this class out of all the classes i ever took at davis. the teacher presented the material that was easy to understand and was always willing to clarify if things got confusing. i wish all teachers at davis taught this way.
Awesome class. Interesting and easy - exactly what all classes should be. If you've taken NPB-101 or NPB-100, the neuroscience presented in this class is cake. There was no curve in this class because the averages were so high. I would HIGHLY recommend both the class AND the professor!
If you're a science major, the course material won't be terribly interesting. However, Bautista was a good lecturer. He podcasted all of his lectures which was helpful because sometimes he goes a little fast. Tests pose some tricky questions, make sure to read all choices before answering. It's difficult to get an A, but very easy to get a B.
Awesome lecturer, presents science in a simplified manner. Class is interesting, exams are a little tricky. READ THE BOOK. Read questions carefully, all m/c. No curve since avg was high. Recommend the class + prof.
This was a very interesting subject. However, the class was boring because he simply makes lists of all the side effects of the drugs. as long as you get the info down it was easy memorization. DONT waste your money on the book. He "highly recommends" you buy it, but he only assigns abt 30pgs total and its all the exact same stuff he said in class.
All multiple choice tests. Memorize his notes and listen to the podcast bc some of the stuff he puts on the tests he says, but doesnt write on the board. Dont buy the book!! Just memorize his notes and youll do very well. He doesnt curve bc the average is usually an 80. Great teacher, interesting class. Highly recommended!
He is an awesome prof, one of the best at Davis. He is interesting, informative, and also really funny. Multiple choice tests, very few questions from the book most were from lec. I learned a lot from him, take him if you can!
Erwin Bautista is an excellent professor. In this class you basically had to make sure to take good lecture notes because that was the majority of the exams, not the reading. It helps if you have the book but since it costs a lot I recommend going without it
Clear professor and uses all sorts of multimedia (powerpoint, overhead, video, chalkboard) to get points across. Extremely professional while also being open to resolving student confusion. I came to each lecture knowing I wouldn't be bored. His test questions are relatively easy for NPB 101, but take good lecture notes and study them really well.
Take this class, you don't to know biology or be good at science to do well. He goes over everything, from when an atom is to the structure of the cell. Best professor I've had at Davis. Tests are really factual, and always multiple choice. This guy is a legend! Heard this class is easier than his upper division. Funny too, so you'll be awake.
This is the third class I've taken from him and he is amazing. Even though he did not use powerpoint for this lecture (for the most part) he still managed to engage students in the material. Very interesting topics and exams were fair. Be sure you can draw quick because he doesn't slow down if you can't. I definitely recommend this professor!
I love this class! I'm so glad I switched from NPB12 to NPB15 last minute. veryveryvery interesting. He is cool and funny. expect him to slip a joke from time to time! Favorritee teacher at davis so far! His first midterm was easy, you can just review the day before. it gradually gets harder. But i still lovee this class ! get his class if you can
Good class for non-bio majors but still really interesting. Really helpful, funny sometimes. Posts lecture slides AND (when he remembers) recordings of lectures online. dresses and talks like he's a student :) Sometime a little too general on subject matter but overall a great lecturer. Definitely recommend this class and proff.
Interesting class. A lot of information is thrown out during the lectures. The tests are relatively easy but everyone does well. Great during office hours, and understanding of circumstances that force you to miss a midterm
Lectures easy. Writes down everything. Test are tricky.
By far the worst teacher I've had at Davis. He can be condescending in office hours and seems very insecure about his knowledge of gastrointestinal physiology. He often states that he is unsure of a mechanism he presents in class and never comes back with the answer. I wouldn't recommend this course if you can help it. His test can be tricky.
Great Lecturer! His midterms are not too hard as long as you study the lecture notes. Very enthusiastic about the subject and is always willing to help you do better!
He was a very interesting professor, but his tests are very tricky. For every test, there were at least three questions that he never went over in class but he claims that he did. One question was off of a picture on a slide that he never went over, and he gave us a different answer in lecture. He is just tricky, but really entertaining
He's a pretty clear/good professor. Practice tests don't match up completely with his exam. Tests can be tricky. Grade based on 2 midterms and a final (30%, 30%, 40%). Though lecture can be a snore sometimes, go because he draws diagrams a lot to explain concepts. OH, he dresses really niiiiice.
Really great professor. His tests are really tricky and over studying will hurt your grade tremendously. Just go to lecture, draw the diagrams, read the book and when it comes to test time, study the diagrams and lecture notes maybe listen to the podcast. If you're not into science like me, I recommend this class for GE credit.
Most disrespectful teacher I've ever had. There was an issue with 1 test question that a few students had. I emailed him to ask if he had made a decision about what he was going to do. He told me to come into his office. That was the first and ONLY email I sent him and when I got to his office he was EXTREMELY rude and told me to let it go.
Good professor who's well organized with his power point lectures. The 2 midterms and the final are based on lectures and assigned reading, but you don't need to buy the book because it's the same topics as the lectures, only more detailed. Take good notes on what he writes and on what he says. Don't cram on studying and you're bound to do well.
I would highly recommend taking him if you can! His lectures may go a bit fast but they are interesting and you honestly aren't wasting your time. The book isn't that necessary, more so the lecture notes. Be sure you know your material well! The tests are not always straightforward questions.
The tests were hard. Very tricky... i didnt think it was really fair. im scared to take another class by him. but he was a fun professor to listen to, made jokes, it was fun.
This class is amazing! I highly recommend it. Go to lecture... take detailed notes... then the tests will be a piece of cake. Write down everything he says and writes on the board. The info is super interesting and he's a really chill guy. Pay attention in lecture and the class will be an easy A
He is one of the best prof. at uc davis. Lectures are very clear and detailed, so if one pays attention and review notes well I'm sure they will do will without reading the book. Overall you do actually learn alot. Also he's really fun so do take him.
Attend lecture, podcasts are available but it is not the same. He posts old exams. And there are no posted slides because he only uses the chalkboard during lecture. Overall I say "If he is lecturing, take the class!".
HE IS AN AMAZING AND FUNNY TEACHER, MAKES LECTURES VERY INTERESTING, AND IS A FUNNY GUY. AS LONG AS YOU ATTEND CLASS AND WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING HE WRITES ON THE BOARD ONE SHOULD BE FINE. HE ALSO PODCASTS HIS LECTURES WHICH IS A PLUS IN MY BOOK. HE IS NOT BAD TO LOOK WHICH MAKES IT THAT MUCH EASIER TO PAY ATTENTION!!!!
Overall a great professor! He has detailed lecture notes, very visual, and is engaging. This class is no walk in the park and there is a LOT to go through. Take his advice and study what he says to study! If he is teaching only 1/2 the course, do your damn best b/c the other professor will not even be close to being as good as Bautista!
Great teacher. Kept the class interesting, fun, informative, and (best of all) SHORT. Let the whole lecture hall out usually about half an hour early every day. He had some funny stories and examples that really helped retain the material taught. Highly recommend this teacher and any of his classes!!
very good teacher!!! just take all the notes he writes on the board, and study them, and you'll do fine :) dont buy the book, didnt even read it, and still passed with a B, but dont cram and study hard for all the tests!
Erwin's undergrad classes are as easy as they are interesting. Awesome.
He is an awesome professor! He's very easy to talk to, he's funny, and his class is quite interesting. His tests are easy, just read over your notes and listen to the podcasts. He's super nice as well, he is allowing me to take my final a couple days early so that I can take a flight home. I definitely recommend him!
Awesome professor, he is really clear when he explains things and cares about whether or not his students understand the material. Very nice guy too, helps his students every way he can. Tests are very fair, grading is totally reasonable. Fantastic professor, boring class. Take him whenever you can.
hes an alright prof just study the notes thoroughly and u should get a good grade. Has a very short fuse and expects u to understand, so if ur gonna ask a question make sure its a good one. otherwise tests are multiple choice and book very cheap although not really needed.
On the first day of lecture my friends and I looked at each other and said, "hey..he's not a chilli peper =(" And we joked about it for the rest of the quarter.. but quite honestly, bautista grows on you! he's so funny and makes the lectures enjoyable and engaging. I should have done a lot better in his class, but whatev. He's awesomee! *thumbs up*
Overall GREAT professor. Funny guy and very clear. 2 MT and one final (all MC). Take great notes and you should be fine. Not too difficult, as far as his tests being tricky and hard...i don't think so.
Really interesting class, he's really clear on what he teaches...you draw a lot which helps. Going to lecture is definitely not mandatory (podcasts and lectures posted online) but helpful. The tests are a little tricky, you definitely have to know your stuff.
Prof. Bautista is a cool guy, easy to talk to and all that good stuff. The class..however..is not that easy. Unless you can absorb and memorize his drawings instantly, the tests are a struggle. He does podcasts but you have to go to class for the drawings; they aren't posted. Unless you have a scientific background, its hard. No curve or EC..
The final was very similar to what the TAs had been emphasizing and was very fair (no surprise questions). In lab he was helpful when around as were the TAs (excellent TAs this qtr). The class was fun except for the "pee lab" and two not too bad but long lab reports. Idk about hot but he does have a good sense of style.
OMG! BAUTISTA IS SOOOOOOOO CUTE!!!! :( i wish i could have gone on a date with him! im really sad that he's getting laid off! HE'S LIKE THE BEST PROFESSOR EVER! class is SUPER easy and he's a really fun lecturer... i've never learned so much before i took this class... i actually LEARNED! :( DR. B! i wish could go on a date with you!!! :)
Dr. Bautista is excellent. Personally, I am very interested in physiology. This guy just makes it even better. His diagrams and written notes are very clear, and his notes/slide lectures alone are enough to make me understand the concepts fully without the textbook. Great job, Dr. B. Too bad you're gone next year, we'll miss you. :(
I am very interested in physiology. This guy just makes it even better. His diagrams and notes/slide lectures alone are enough to make me understand the concepts fully without the textbook. Two midterms and a final, completely based off notes. No curve, but study well and you won't need to worry. Too bad he's gone next year, we'll miss him. :(
Never saw him the entire quarter. This is one of those classes that just depends on your TA. I had a terrible one, so I wasn't prepared for the killer non-curved final exam. I was disappointed that the labs require you to subject yourself to uncomfortable situations. You are required to pee in a cup and analyze it with each other. Can't opt out.
Probably the best professor I've had thus far at UCD. He's amazing at explanations, and he motivates his students to learn. I'll be extremely disappointed if the administration does actually decide to lay him off.
Bautista is one of the best professors at UCD. He is extremely clear and straight forward and he is an outstanding lecturer! NPB68 was a very interesting course. His tests are straight from is lecture notes so the book is completely unnecessary! The second midterm is easier than the first and the final is pretty descent.
For a class I thought was going to be an easy GE, it was not. I attended every lecture but found them only slightly interesting. One of my biggest problems is the tests. On the practice midterm, the answer to a question was some year, but on the actual exam, there was the same question, but not the same answer.
Dr. Bautista is a very nice guy and his lectures are very clear. However, the test questions are confusing and it is VERY difficult to get an A in his class because the tests are only 40 questions long. (You can get 4 wrong and have a B) He also doesn't fully explain aspects of systems of the body that must be explained in order to understand. :/
Professor Bautista is a funny teacher. He definitely knows his stuff. However, I was really disappointed with testing in his class. His tests are very tricky and often, the questions have more than one right answer in my opinion. There is no curve. Furthermore, some questions are detailed and he does not go into detail often.
Dr. Bautista makes the material you have to learn interesting and more enjoyable. He relates some of the material back to our everyday lives and cracks jokes. Additionally, he has a great sense of style for a professor.
He's a great professor. He's really clear on everything that he states. He makes all of his lectures understandable also. He's funny and his tests are really easy. Sad he's leaving after Spring Quarter.
Great professor. Calming lecture style. Logical, organized lectures. Sweet guy. Easy class if you can memorize. Personally, found it fascinating. A really good, very basic course.
Loved this guy! he is amazing!!! such an easy and interesting class!
Prof Bautista is amazing! You do not need the book AT ALL but his class is fun, interesting, and he has very clear lectures that he posts notes and podcasts for online so attendance isn't mandatory. Tests are easy - multiple choice. He's so cute!!! Defff take this class for an easy A+.
Professor Bautista is a very good teacher. His lectures are clear and the material is very easy to understand. The tests are multiple choice. I wish i could have him for npb 101...
GREAT TEACHER! his lectures are super clear and if studied properly the class should be very easy! he gives four mid-terms and drops the lowest grade. an A is easily achievable.
I don't know what the school is thinking firing him. He is the best lecturer I have encountered thus far. He speaks clearly, has an edge of humor, and is super knowledgeable in the field. Intelligent man, great teacher, and great person to talk to. Whichever school gets him next is the luckiest school ever. Thank you for everything Dr.B! Good luck!
Honestly my favorite course as a UCD freshman. He took what could've been a convoluted topic, and turns it into an easy A course in which you still learn a ton. The dude's also got style, and is very nice. Wish I could've taken one of the upper divs he taught, but UCD made the foolish decision to let him go. Good luck to wherever you go, Bautisa
Fantastic
loved the class
He teaches at Solano Community College now. A lot of students are struggling in his Physiology class because none of us know what will cover on the tests. Hes really good at lecture but he makes us answer our own questions and we have to figure out what we might have to know. He probably had a different approach at UC Davis.
Tricky tests! No curve.
Awesome class! Probably one of the best class I have ever taken at UC Davis! Dr. Bautista taught it very well. It was clear what he expected his students to know. His exams are not that hard if you study the notes really well and thoroughly.
Bautista was great! There was a lot of material in this class, but he broke the material up into four exams that weren't cumulative. He was extremely helpful in office hours and was always able to answer questions. He can be a little difficult to reach since he's so busy, but I definitely recommend him. No book for this class.
Prof. Bautista is amazing! He clearly draws everything out during lecture and he is easy to understand. I would highly recommend this class, very easy and not time consuming at all, if you're interested in human physiology. He is a great lecturer.
One of the best professors I've had. Overall the class covers basic concepts, and Bautista explains everything crystal clear in his lectures. Great lecturer. Draws a lot of diagrams in class to explain his point step by step. Really truly cares about his students and it shows everyday. Would recommend him to anyone.
Bautista is an amazing teacher! It got a little bit jumbled at the end, but his lectures were still very clear and straight-forward and he is a very approachable and super nice. Although I can't say how he teaches upper div. classes, he made physiology very easy to understand for for people like me where science isn't the easiest. Take his class!
Professor Bautista is definitely passionate about teaching his students. I would definitely recommend taking his class to anyone!
Easy Class. I'd recommend attending lecture and taking good notes. He posts podcasts and lecture slides, so its no big deal if you don't understand something, as you can always go back to it later. He does move a bit fast in class. DON'T buy the textbook, honestly I didn't look at it. He will only test you on what you learned in class. I recommend!
He is amazing! One of the best professors at UCD! Organized, clear as crystal, very helpful and nice. You should go to class because he likes to draw pictures which are not posted on smartsite.
Hands down best professor at Davis. Great class! I wish he taught all the systems. I would take any class if Bautista was teaching it!
One of the best professor at UC Davis! He's very clear at explaining and knows the stuff very very well. His tests are very reaonable as long as you attend lectures and understand what he says. Some people thinks that he moves on too quickly, but I think it's just about right. Tests averages varies around 75%-85%. Been trying to take all his class!
He is a clear professor, but sometimes he's a bit sloppy with the way he organizes his material. The exams were hard to get an A on. No curve means if you miss more than 4 question out of 40 you've got a B. The exams range from doable to quite difficult. I'd say take him, but beware of confusing, convoluted test questions.
I took this course spring 13' along w/ Debello, Weidner, & Harris. Study hard, really hard. Don't slack off & make sure to review your notes after class to solidify the info. The class had a tutor available & I was surprised hardly anyone sought her help, considering the avg was around a 58-60%. He curves by 1 std dev abv is a solid B, so 1.5 is A-
I think his average score on RMP is so high due to his really easy NPB 10 class. Dr Bautista was a poor lecturer, and poor at responding to emails. His availability was downright awful. If hed lecture like he talks in OH, hed be fine. I sent 10 emails, and maybe recvd 1 back. His tests arent fair; he convolutes questions as much as possible. Avoid!
I liked his lectures but he is highly overrated as a teacher. He writes notes on a projector but says lots of important things that he doesn't write down. Podcasts are a must and he often lost the recordings or blamed the technology. He often says the wrong thing, which messes us up for exams. I strongly feel I should have done better than I did.
This class was very straightforward. The key to getting an A in this class is just studying your notes for 10 minutes like 4 times a week. It's too overwhelming to study it all before the test. The material is easy and so interesting! He's a great lecturer because he's not monotone and draws pictures to help you understand physiology,
The absolute best professor at UC Davis, his exams are super straight forward and he is clear in what he expects of you...the people complaining are probably just angry b/c they simply aren't good at physiology...definitely the easiest physio class I have taken!
The BEST lecturer I've had at Davis so far. He makes complex material interesting and explains it very clearly. While you should go to class, he podcasts and posts his notes online so attending is not necessary (I never went to class). Tests are straightforward but the material is extensive so don't procrastinate on studying. Easy A
Best professor at UCD, crystal clear and fun lectures. Very clear on what he expects and he has the best way of lecturing that will help you learn. Funny and active. Test questions are very hard and require critical thinking but you will do well if you study a bit every day. BEST CLASS I HAVE HAD SO FAR. Listen to podcast after lecture to solidify.
Dr. E is the absolute best. The class biology of Addiction) was very interesting and very easy. 3 midterms and a final which was like the same format as the midterm( so basically 4 midterms). Lectures are very clear and podcasts are available online. Totally recommend him!
Very engaging lecturer. He writes his own powerpoint slides. Really clear about concepts you should focus on and draws out diagrams and writes additional comments to clarify his slides. Easy on the eyes too, in my opinion.
Pretty much all the interaction is with the TAs, I never saw the dude the whole quarter. He only writes the lab final. So this class really depends on how your TA is. Mine was god awful, so none of us knew what the expectations were nor were very prepared for the final. I wish Bautista would spend more time with the students.
I like the way he writes out his notes as he is lecturing, the diagrams he draw are really helpful. A very straightforward class, posts all lecture notes and records his lectures as podcasts so I pretty much gave up going to class. Exams are solely based on his lectures so as long as you know what he says in class, you're pretty much set for an A.
Bautista is a good lecturer. His test questions are pretty challenging but if you really study the material you will do well. Don't assume he won't put anything on there, because the randomest things will go. Study everything on the slides in detail.
pretty much your success in this class is your ta,i had a really hard ta who gave brutal quizzes and had brutal high standards for lab reports. Bautista writes the final, hardest thing i ever took,i studied soo hard and failed it. He is very sympathetic in office hours and through our complaints he curved our lab section. NPB101L is pretty tough tho
Great professor. I have one critique: he needs to learn how to pronounce correctly the things he is teaching. For example, "alveolus" is FOUR syllables, not three. It's frustrating to hear at 8am. That's like saying ath-ah-lete instead of athlete.
While not an easy professor, he is very fair. If you study the material he presents in lecture and read the textbook daily, you should do well. That said, he is often sloppy with his word choice which can lead to some confusion. All in all, a good professor.
One of the best lecturers at UCD. His expectations are clear. Keep up with the information and study daily. Don't need to read the book if you pay attention in lecture. His lectures are fun and he moves around and gives good examples of certain things (sometimes funny). Approachable, but I wouldn't ask a dumb question.
Good summer course. A lot of information but its relatively easy to digest in small chunks especially in the summer. Good lectures but hard tests got A's on all :) no txt requirements but if u don't understand something then its good to get the recommended.
Dr. Bautista is a fantastic lecturer. He is extremely clear in both his explanations and what he expects you to know. You should know his slides forwards and backwards and read the book if you don't understand. His word choice is sometimes sloppy, but he is always happy to clear it up if need be.
BEST lecturer I have ever had. I wish every professor taught like him. He draws pictures to help you envision the material, and explains everything so well! I would take more classes from him just for fun! I studied everyday though, just go through your notes for 15 min a day and you'll be good! I got an A+.
This guy is amazing. Don't take the class with anyone else! He's hilarious and so nice and an AMAZING teacher. He posts all his notes and podcasts online so you don't ever have to show up except for the tests. I feel guilty for never showing up because he was such an awesome guy. Tests are just the notes only! Didn't touch the book once.
Dr. B is the best lecturer I've had at Davis. He explains things clearly, AND he posts his lecturesnotes online. Not difficult to get an A -- test questions are always straightforward. Don't study the night before though; there's a lot of info. Don't buy the book unless you're interested in the material. I never opened mine and still got an A
Bautista presents his material in a way that forces you to simply memorize the facts instead of actually understanding how everything is connected and how it all works together. So if you like memorization more than understanding concepts then you should do well, emphasis on the MEMORIZATION.
Prof Bautista writes his notes out as he teaches. He presents information clearly, but doesn't really connect everything (probably for the sake of simplicity - this is a non major course). Tests are MC and short, simple questions based completely off lecture notes. He posts podcasts and lecture notes. I aced the midterms. Would recommend!
Sometimes it feels like he is lecturing to elementary school students, but I guess that's because he is super friendly and tries to break things down. A lot of the material is either obvious or too complicated for us to really understand. But he is a nice guy and all lectures are podcasted and notes are posted.
Professor Baustista is the hardest professor I have ever had. He not only tests on his lectures, but also EXACTLY what he says so be prepared to write down everything that he says. Practice tests are nothing like the info for the real tests. The average grade for this 3 unit class was 27 out of 34. When asked if he would curve he would never reply
Dr. Bautista was phenomenal. His lecture slides are very detailed & explain the different organ systems clearly. His tests are all multiple choice & gives little room for guessing. His exams are tough & do require you to know your stuff very well . You need to study everyday (no joke). Dr. B makes the class interesting and easy to understand.
He REUSES almost all of his exam questions. You can find them online or just ask someone who took the class before you. Seriously, cannot emphasize the old question recycling enough. He only asks 30 questions on the exam-but somehow manages to reuse nearly all of them. Take his class with the old tests!
Great SS1 Class! The lectures were all written on the board so be ready to do a lot of copying, drawing, and pictures. The textbook was optional, few friends said it was beneficial. The class had only 3 exams, all 40-50 MC. There is no curve in this class, however for us we had EC on the final. I did fairly well by studying a day before the exam.
Bautista is a great lecturer & explains difficult concepts very well. His exams do require critical thinking & are a bit challenging. If you did well in NPB101, then NPB113 will not be too bad. The class is basically NPB101 but in more depth and detail on only 3 organ systems. Highly recommend this class w/ Bautisa to any NPB major
This class is easy if you keep up with the course work. Just be prepared to take constant notes in class as he goes really fast. However if you attend lecture there is no reason you should do poorly on the tests, they are based almost entirely off of lecture.
Bautista is an outstanding professor! He only looks to set ALL his students up for success. It is very evident that he cares for his students and only wants them to exceed in his class. He takes the time to write out his notes while lecturing and teaches with enthusiasm, passion, and humor. Beyond amazing professor!!
Lectures are fantastic! Exams are not tough unless you skip too many lectures. And he'll give you very specific guides before the final!
You really don't need to attend the lectures to do well (Professor posts all his notes online as well as podcasts for every lecture), but I'd highly recommend it. Professor Bautista is an amazing instructor and he's really funny too! I genuinely feel like I learned a lot and there was never anything on the exams that I felt wasn't taught in class.
Great professor! The course consisted of 2 md's, final, and hw. Not curved, straight scale system. Also, make sure you understand the material and not just memorize the terms. He clarifies any questions during office hours and is always very energetic during his lectures (which helps time pass fast). I'd strongly recommend to take NPB10 with him.
Excellent professor! TIP: Be an active student during lecture and take handwritten notes, leave space at the top of your notebook for questions that you may have during lecture. Go to office hour to get questions answered (check them off as you go through them). Worked extremely well for me! Great guy!
Dr. Bautista gives crystal clear lectures and draws out diagrams to help us understand the material more in depth! Bonus: he writes really neat! All you have to do is attend lecture, relisten to the podcast and understand the material on the slides! His tests come from lecture material only so study that and you'll do well! Would take him again!
Textbook was useless. Focus on the lectures. Three exams (30%) non-cumulative, homework (10%). It's easy as long as you keep up with his lectures because the exams are based entirely off the lectures. He posts the notes and podcasts online. Great professor overall. Only downside was the $80 ebook, which is 10% of yor grade for homework.
One of the best! Is super clear in his lectures (goes slowly and draws everything out), makes lectures entertaining, and makes tests really fair and doable. He's also just a sincere and wonderful person. Attend lecture and study notes, and should be an easy A. Barely read textbook (not needed for exams), but has easy quizzes worth 10% of the grade
101L was tougher than I expected. The 2 lab reports were infinitely more time-consuming than I thought, each ended up being 20 pages long, 6000 words. It was not well communicated what to expect for the final, which upon taking I realized was impossible to fully prepare for. Ended up with 87.6%, which was curved in our section to an A (6/7% curve)
Prof B is a great prof very kind to the heart. My only problem is that he's very vague when it comes to tests. TONS of small details that may randomly be on the test, wish he had a study guide and more points for other assignments. He has easy topics on the test at times but some are unexpected. Just not the best in overall grading structure....
Dr. B was an excellent professor. His lectures were extremely clear and he does a really good job at explaining thorough hand-written diagrams. His tests were pretty easy. Overall take him for NPB 101 and you will learn a lot.
This was an easy course! Lectures are enjoyable and even though he posts his lecture notes online, I enjoyed attending his class. His tests are all based on his notes so no surprises on the tests. 3 midterms and 1 final.
Bautista is very genuine and approachable, very calm and paced lectures (all streamed and posted online). Tests based entirely on notes which are relatively easy to study. There are 3 tests and a number of very easy online hwrks. Little room for error if you want that A+. Overall great class.
Bautista does explain the concept well - he is an expert on the field. But compared to Liets, his questions on the test are more tricky. His lectures tend to drag, meaning he goes through loops to get a concept across rather than be straight forward about it. He's very funny and genuine professor, but could be better with some teaching aspect.
Amazing professor! All exams are based on lectures and what he says so pay attention! He posts lectures on smartsite so attendance wasn't mandatory. Textbook is online and hw is online and graded by completion. All memorization and as long as you understand the material and study occasionally then you should do fine. RECOMMEND and would take again
Dr. Bautista is an amazing professor! His class is meant for non-science majors, so with a little biology or anatomy background it is a breeze. His lectures are very calm and paced and he takes his time explaining concepts. I like how his lectures are comprised of him writing and drawing out the material because it's really easy to follow along.
Dr. Bautista is a fantastic lecturer. He does brief review on the lecture immediately before and gives very detailed notes. He writes his notes out along with you in class, and uses TONS of drawings. He is very willing to reschedule midterms and work with you when you have things going on outside of class. Overall, the best teacher I have had.
Never saw Bautista. Your Grade is highly dependent on your TA, so just hope you get a good one. Lab reports are a TON of work and graded harshly, so don't procrastinate on them. The lab practical is all multiple choice, and overall was very fair (if you know the physiological mechanisms of why you saw the results that you did in labs, you're set).
I loved this class, Bautista is very enthusiastic about teaching and cares that his students succeed and gain something from the class. Explains everything extremely well and breaks information down to the core. Exams are based on lectures, make sure to listen to every detail provided.
He is very engaging, gives clear and organized lectures, tells us what to expect on exams and is completely reasonable. The class is not curved but the averages are always higher than 80% on tests. I thoroughly enjoyed attending his class and hope I have the chance to take a class with him again in the future. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED PROFESSOR!! :D
Took him for NPB 10, and now for 101. He is passionate, has great handwriting and draws detailed drawings to help us understand hard concepts. His slides are wordy, which is good for additional studying! He has amazing stories and jokes, makes you really enjoy the class time. Tests aren't tricky if you study and know your stuff, duh.
He was a great professor with notes that were completely relevant for test material. He wrote notes in class at a steady pace and posted them on time so you could access them later. Going to class was helpful since you could just listen and take in info and read notes again later. Overall wonderful professor and very easy tests/online work.
His lectures are amazing and you can tell that he is passionate about the topic. Quickly responds to emails and truly cares about his students success. Hands down, one of the best professors Ive ever had at UCD!
i took him for 101 and i loved him, but DONT TAKE HIM FOR NPB 113. its one of the hardest class ever, and he make mistake in lecture and not even fix them and expect us to get it right on midterms.
okkie so i took him for npb 101 and that class was really essay and he was really good professor, then i decided to take him for 113.... worst idea ever its like a different professor. His midterm are really hard and i studied his notes over and over and still cant answer a lot of his test question... his curve its not even a curve.... avoid npb113
Mainly dependent on your TA so pray for a good one. Mine was subpar, not accessible, no explicit expectations for reports when asked but wanted amazing reports. Rating for Bautista is solely based on the final which I believe was fair, MC covering relevant physio and the results from each labs.
Literally so irresponsible. He never responds to his emails, and when he does its like a week after you email him.
Best professor so far. Nice handwriting & detailed drawings of concepts, overall he's very detailed with his notes & very caring as a professor. Very enthusiastic about teaching and uses a lot of examples. He posts his notes and podcasts online. i really respect this guy
Dr. Bautista is a great guy! He makes his lectures are interesting as possible, and throws in a few jokes here and there. However, although tests are based solely on lectures, you really need to study for them, as they are 90% of your grade. I would definitely recommend this class for a grade boost for tough quarters.
Best professor I have ever had. He takes notes with the class adding in drawings and his opinions. He is very kind and makes lectures fun. Textbook not required, he just assigns readings with practice questions online, easy points. His exams are strictly lecture based and can be challenging. Must attend lecture, but he does post the slides.
His practice exams are like 10 years old. Alright prof. Even though the exams are multiple choice they're pretty hard.
Overall he is a great professor. I liked his note taking method, he took notes by hand with the class while also including his own opinions and helpful pictures. There were 2 midterms and 1 final and also practice homework online due once a week. For the midterms and finals if you memorize his notes you will definitley pass this class.
Professor Bautista is my favorite professor at UC Davis. The class is overall really lecture heavy. I would study my notes the night before and in the morning and found the midterms realllly easy. I usually just memorize things but he's a great explainer. He knows what he's talking about and he really cares about his students' success. TAKE HIM!!
His exams are not tricky at all!The questions are straight forward and are based on the lecture notes. If you truly study the notes a week ahead you should ace each test. You do not need the book so don't even bother purchasing it. You have HW assignments that are online and the grade is based on completion also don't bother studying the HW.
Worst professor at this university. Doesn't answer your emails and is barely available for help outside of class. Please avoid.
Hands down one of my favorite professors. His lectures are very easy to follow and easy to understand. He explains things very well. Homework is online and based on completion. His exams are very straight forward. Just study his lecture notes and it's very easy to pass. I'm not very good at science and he made me genuinely like the class.
He was genuinely not the best at all. People say it is an easy class. No it is not at all! The way he structures his tests are bad. He doesn't know how to correctly ask questions in the exam. Please don't take him if you don't need the class. You will regret it.
Ive taken physiology before at a different school and received the highest grade in the class there. Here, the material was even simpler and easier than the other school I went to, yet on test day, I found that the exam questions were very unclear and poorly worded; you could interpret the question multiple ways. He is a good lecturer though.
Proff B was great! I learned alot in this class. If you are pre-health i recommend taking this class. You have alot to study and its challenging material but he is an excellent lecturer. He podcasts, I re-listened to every lecture after attending. He is very knowledgeable. Grade is 3 midterm, 1 final -->(1/3) cum.
Think of Dr. B as a walking textbook. You won't be able to reach him through email, so ASK YOUR QUESTIONS in class, or scheduled office hours! This class was super fun, but the exams sometimes have material You didn't learn! You NEED a group to feed off each other's knowledge and catch Dr. B's mistakes! Group is the key to succeed in this class!
While Dr. B is a great lecturer, he is a bit hard to reach. He doesn't really respond to messages/emails well, and takes a long time to upload things like class notes/podcasts. He doesn't always write down everything that's important so I recommend recording lecture and listening to it again. His exams are very fair, but sometimes he makes mistakes
Your 101L experience can vary widely depending on what TA you have, so hope for a good one. Two lab reports that were very doable, but did take up A LOT of time. Don't procrastinate!!! As for the lab practical, you need to understand the physiological mechanisms behind your lab results really well. Average on our lab practical was around 65% :/
Pros: Breaks his neuro material down to its core so it is easier for us, his slides cover the basics and he doesn't test outside of his slides, is actively trying to be a better teacher Cons: sometimes its too easy and the material is explained through analogies and not as facts, some oddly worded test questions Take him!
He was my one of the lecturers for my NPB101 course in the summer. I really enjoyed it and believed his questions were more straightforward compared to the others. Exams were multiple choice, but had a lot of "all of the above" options. When I took NPB101L, my section did bad b/c of TA, but Bautista generously curved! Would recommend.
He's by far one of my favorite professors. The class was really easy, and he was very engaging. He has this upbeat attitude, that the lectures are pretty great There are quite a few homework but it's very easy and very doable. His test is all based on his lectures, so if you study that the class will be an easy A.N
Good lecturer. Terrible test maker. Short answer questions are very open ended but if you don't give the specific answer he is looking for, he will not give much partial credit. If not for the other professor, the average of the first exam would have been 50%. His questions try to integrate all the material but he doesn't do a good job teaching it.
Dr. B is a really, really good professor. He teaches in a way thats really accessible to non-science people. He knows how to actually teach, so that we understand it easily. He was actually pretty funny, too. I would definitely recommend Dr. B if you need a lower division science.
Dr. B is a wonderful professor - he does a great job of structuring his material so it's conducive to learning growth, and he keeps it engaging. The only difficult thing about this class would be the sheer amount of information you have to internalize, so reading over the textbook definitely helps! Don't miss a lecture or you'll be totally lost.
BEWARE: The textbook/homework access costs $80 and is basically useless, except that homework is 2% of your total grade. I regret paying for it. However, Prof Bautista is a very organized and detailed lecturer and his tests aren't too difficult. I recommend using Quizlet to study for exams.
NPB 101L depends ENTIRELY on your TA, so pray for a good one. I had Priscilla and she was so amazing. Her pre-lectures and review materials were golden; I got a 88 on the practical when the average was around mid 70's. DO NOT procrastinate on your lab reports!! These can save your grade tremendously and work as a buffer for your practical.
All eight labs were genuinely interesting and exciting. Each weeks quiz can be aced by thouroughly reading prelab slides. Two lab reports (intro, methods, results, discussion) that are around 15 pages each. Final was more in depth than quizzes but very fair. Given many chances to do well in this class. Try to get Victor as your TA, trust me!
This class is suppose to be for non-science majors, wouldnt call it easy in the slightest. This is my second time taking it, as my first I didnt pass and got a D. I worked really hard this quarter and received a B. He assigns a lot of pointless and tedious online homework. Great lecturer, I recommend going to class. Hard if science is hard for you
Genuinely cares about his students, always accessible through email and office ours. Keeps lectures entertaining. Tests do not contain trick questions, just require some thinking. Definitely need to study.
One of the best professors at Davis, actually cares about students and genuinely wants to help you as much as he can
I think the material presented is super interesting and Bautista is a good professor. However, his test questions are very oddly worded. I think that is detrimental to students because the questions can be interpreted more than one way. Multiple Choice also doesn't allow room for error so misinterpreting a question is very bad
Very sweet man who wants students to succeed. All lecture material posted online w/ voice recording. Tests are straight forward, just require some studying. If you will attend lecture, less studying is required. Easy and quick online homework assignments, although they are worth practically no points (around 10% i think?)
hands down the best professor i had during my first year. really great lecturer, super nice and funny, provided great examples and methods of remembering everything. definitely would recommend him for any class.
Your NPB 101L experience will be based on your TA. There are quizzes every week, and two lab reports you do throughout the quarter. The lab reports take a lot of time, I recommend starting early and going to TA office hours since they will be the ones grading your lab reports. Rarely will you get out early from lab or discussion.
He is very passionate about the subject and you can tell by the way he talks. He explains concepts pretty well. His test questions are fair.
The best professor I've had at Davis so far. His lectures are super interesting and engaging, and he explains hard concepts in a way that's easy to understand. His tests are fair, and he genuinely cares about his students. He makes you want to come to lecture, and he also records podcasts. Definitely take him if you have the opportunity.
He's an amazing, dynamic lecturer and his clicker and test questions are very fair. Studying the lecture slides and showing up to class and discussion should be enough to do well in NPB110A with him.
Fantastic professor for 110A. Between Bautista and VdM, you have two great lecturers!
He is amazing professor, doesn't assign too much useless homework. Homework only includes LearnSmart exercises which are very easy, since your graded for completion not accuracy. The home work is only 2% of your grade. He has 3 Midterms and one final which you should do good on as long as you STUDY/REVIEW the material!
His lectures are well-paced and he was able to keep the class engaged even over Zoom. His tests are fair but do require some frequent studying. He makes it clear what material you should study and if you study weekly for quizzes the midterms aren't too bad. He handled the transition to online well and was super flexible with any issues that came up
Bautista is a passionate and understanding professor. The homework is time consuming and not worth so much, but it is good practice for the three midterms and final exam. The tests are on the difficult side, at least for me as a non-STEM major, but I needed this for a GE and it was overall decent.
I loved Dr B. He's an amazing lecturer, he keeps you interested and outlines what you absolutely need to know for tests. I found his tests extremely straightforward in comparison to the material, if you studied you'll do fine.
Dr. Bautista seems really nice! But I'm not sure if it's just me but he seems to not really answer everyone's questions and only chooses to answer some of his questions and ignores everyone else's complaints and questions. I understand this class is hard but he is cramming so much material within the class even w COVID. its so much harder at home.
Dr. B is very knowledgable and is very passionate about physiology. But lectures are EXTREMELY heavy almost like I'm in med school. Barely anything to save your grade (homework was 3% of entire grade, guess it isnt important then) and exams were a step beyond powerpoints. No study guides, just curves for exams. Take this with another professor.
Taking Human Physiology during the summer is HARD. Very DENSE material and VERY VERY FAST. Don't take it unless you're prepared to work your butt off. It is a an important class required for pre-health grad schools so I get why it is hard because you need to learn but the professor wasn't that accommodating due to COVID like extra time on exams etc
Dr. B is an amazing lecturer! He's very passionate about physiology and doesn't like to use powerpoints (at least for NPB 114). This allows students to actively engage in what he's writing/drawing notes about. The class is graded on just exams, take them seriously b/c theyre worth 33% each. Highly recommend the class!
It may just be because of COVID circumstances in combination with it being summer session, but Bautista does little more for you than provide the information (no study guides, not a lot of practice exams, etc.) An A is not impossible, but you really have to structure your own time with this class.
Dr. Bautista is really amazing at teaching and his lectures are easy to follow. His exams are based on his lectures, but you have to understand and study his notes pretty well in order to do well on his exams. I listened to his study tips and put effort to do well on his exams. Highly recommended.
NPB101, a 5 unit class, itself is hard, and taking NPB in summer session is very hard, too short to learn all the dense materials, and taking NPB in summer sesison during COVID with Dr. B is extremely hard. During the online exam, it made me nervous to see Dr. B's serious face on Zoom. Take this class with some other profs during normal quarter.
Taking NPB 101 during the summer is hard and the class itself is hard in a normal quarter. Taking it with Dr. B was unbelievable difficult and no accommodation or empathy towards students taking such a difficult class during such a difficult time aka COVID 19. Better off taking the course with someone else who has more empathy for their students.
I had Dr. B for NPB101 Fall 2019 and for NPB114 online in the summer. He is a great professor that lectures very well, since he doesn't usually read off of presentation slides and uses an iPad for writing notes. I would definitely recommend him if you are willing to put in the work, since some of his test questions can be pretty tricky.
NPB 113 is a 4 unit class. We meet twice a week for 1hr and 50 minutes. He's been regularly going over lecture time by 30 minutes - 1 hr and 15 minutes. If you feel that you need to post an extra lecture every week then this is no longer a 4 unit class for all of the material that's given. Very frustrating when professors don't value student's time
Dr. B is an amazing professor--one of the best at UCD. However, when we don't have live lecture (such as exam days), he often posts videos that are longer than our scheduled class time--that is honestly unacceptable and makes me dislike him. If It weren't for that, I'd give him a 5. Either way, he's a solid choice.
He's an experienced professor who lectures very well. He doesn't use slides for 114 and writes all notes on his IPad. All lectures were recorded and posted. His tests were straightforward but VERY specific so make sure you study all the little details in your notes. Main complaint is that he uploaded additional lectures, even on Thanksgiving Day!
NPB 113 and 114 are information-heavy classes, and Bautista tried to exploit the online classes system to give longer and extra lectures in order to cover as much materials as he wants (he still did not cover everything). Even though this is pretty messed up, his lectures were very informative, clear, and interesting, so I did not mind it.
Dr.B is AMAZING! The class is very difficult because the material is super dense but if you go to lecture and take really good notes you'll be good. He covers everything very clearly and if he ever thinks he isn't clear on something he won't test you on it. Grades are determined by midterms and final with some drawing assignments here and there.
Your NPB101L experience depends entirely on the TA. I had dovin and he was a very tough grader. I recommend avoiding him and taking it with another TA.
This guy is the best. He made a topic I was afraid of learning about because of the fear of difficulty easy to approach. It's like how I was taught in elementary school and it's honestly super wonderful. He radiates father energy. He is a man of culture. I would be blessed to take him again. Grade is based off exams, short assignments, and connect.
His lectures were dense, but really informative and engaging if you're passionate about exercise and metabolism! This class was taught with Liets, and I found Bautista's portion of the exams much easier and straightforward. I would definitely take him again. 2 midterms (25% each), final exam (35%), final project (10%), notabene (5%).
I haven't started the first class but I can already tell this professor knows how to teach well. He has clear learning objectives, seems enthusiastic about the material, and wants his students to succeed. His tests are based on what he teaches in class, the book is used as an aid to help with learning. He seems well organized, caring, and respected
Only graded on 3 exams but he was very specific about how all the information in the lectures would be on the exams. Passed the class with an A because I took good notes and made sure to pay attention. He was really nice and funny which made lectures engaging.
Professor Bautista is knowledgeable and a good lecturer. His exams are very reflective of the material, and he even allowed them to be open notes (which is the only reason I succeeded in this course). Unfortunately he is not accommodating whatsoever, with a no-tolerance policy on missed exams. Additionally, he assigned an $80 text hw worth only 3%.
Attending live and being force fed NPB was much easier than watching the recorded ones after on my own (and taking twice as long). Don't fall behind! Tests on what he says in lecture so take GOOD notes. Textbook for hw (3%). 2 MT(29%)+1 final(38%) with a slight class curve. Make sure you can put what's going on in your own words and you'll be ok.
Dr. B hypes up how hard his class is, but as long as you keep on top of material, it's a fairly easy A. Just don't skip lectures; Dr. B has great lectures, and the material can be difficult on its own, so make sure you understand everything and ask questions! Exams are fair, as long as you have a good conceptual understanding of everything.
As everybody's been saying, he is a great teacher as a person. I liked his aim to make 80% average of class before curve. One thing I can complain is that his explanations can be confusing, and I needed to recheck with wikipedia or other online resources every single time (while textbook being really useless in that sense). GOOD notes matter!
NPB 101 is a really tough class so don't expect it to be easy but Dr. B really is an awesome professor. Exam questions are geared toward what he teaches in class so be sure to pay attention and make sure to take really good notes. If you can understand the material enough to explain it to someone else, you should be fine.
Great lecturer. Can break down complex topics and make them simple to understand. Has 3 midterms, 1 final exam, and a few drawing/short-answer assignments that are graded (nothing too bad). Exam questions are straightforward and all MC. No extra credit. Difficult to reach outside of class, especially email. Get ready to work for the A.
Great lecturer. Grades consist of 2 midterms, 1 final exam, and a few drawing/short-written assignments (nothing too bad). Doable with NPB113, but will require a bit of effort to get an A. No extra credit. No late assignments. Can be difficult to reach through email. Exams are fair, straightforward, and all MC. No textbook is needed but can help.
In this class, you don't have contact with Dr. B at all. He is more of an admin rather than an instructor, but he writes the final which might not even cover what you talked about in your section all quarter. There's basically no avoiding him for this class, but try to brush up on all your physiology even if its not covered in your discussion.
I thought Dr. B was a great professor! The class is heavy in material, specially since it is 4 days a week + the lectures cover so much. The material is clearly connected and Dr. B provides a lot of details to help you understand. It gets confusing sometimes but it is doable.
I took this class with Bautista and Van Der Meulen, Dr. B's lectures were definitely more confusing. This class covers a lot of different and very complicated topics. Bautista was a fine lecturer and answered questions well. Grading for this class was rough, and exams were very difficult although they were open note.
He's passionate as a lecturer, went a little fast for me but I liked how he explained things. There were so many complicated yet interesting topics to learn. The course was dense with long lectures, exams were hard and grading is rough but I became more interested in NPB as a major
Loves the sound of his own voice, totally inaccessible outside of class (won't respond to emails), and unable to lecture to a universal audience outside of the little world of UC Davis NPB majors. Lacks accommodation for students who don't fit his very myopic expectation of prepared. For reference I am a returning student with a degree already.
He was good at teaching but the way he responds to emails and concerns with the class sucks. He is not accessible after class unless you go to his OH. He never responds to emails unless it has to do with exam taking. Any homework questions or requests, he won't respond to. It honestly makes it really hard to succeed in this class.
Really heavy topics. Super interesting but be prepared to study a lot. Try to go to office hours and ask questions. He is never available through email. Not kidding. It really sucks. Would have gotten a better grade if he answered his emails because his OH was during my class times so I could never make it.
He is one of my favorite professors at UCD. Lots of information but that's expected for any NPB course. Tests are easy if you take good notes and understand the material. I learned cool things from this class, would definitely take him again.
youll be tested on things only mentioned verbally & not written in lecture notes. pace is too fast, and feels like a 5+ unit class. he really talks down to students and is unresponsive. take him if you want someone to make you feel like an idiot. grade is based on mostly exams. no lecture slides, he writes on an iPad and you're expected to copy.
The TA determines the quality of teaching you will get for this course. The lab practical is written by Bautista, incredibly difficult! Material was detail orientated, down to mini exercises performed in lab. It's worth 25% of your grade. A lab report is also worth 25% of your grade, so be prepared to work hard. Would recommend any other professor!
He will test you on material never brought up in class. Don't expect to be taught anything, this course is 100% self studying. There is no lecture for this course, and Bautista is never present. All he does is write the Final exam after letting each TA cover what ever they feel like covering. You complete the lab, leave, and are given no guidance.
The professor is not teaching the class; the class is run by the TA; a lot of work (lab reports, weekly quizzes, pre-labs). The professor is writing the final, and the TAs have no clue what to cover during the lab section. The final will have questions that you would never encounter during your lab section. Horrible experience!!!
This course was super interesting and Bautista gave really great life applications to the content. Due to him being sick at the start of his section, there was a bit of a lack of communication for pre-exam office hours but other than that he was very helpful. No practice exams so you have to be prepared to know all of the lecture content.
He's a good lecturer and his exams were pretty fair but he is so disorganized. He is basically impossible to reach outside of class. He didn't plan class correctly -- 2nd midterm covered 4 lectures and 3rd midterm covered 9. Said he would curve the course if the average was under a B, which it was, but ghosted us after the final and didn't curve.
Dr. b is an excellent lecturer and is pretty clear on his expectations for the course, but beware! literally no communication outside of class and is very inaccessible. midterms are fairly difficult, so be prepared to study a lot but his slides are very representative and helpful. mostly talking to the TA for help lol but great prof overall!
This class is very reliant on Bautista's lectures, which are quick and leave you full of questions. Without an official textbook, this class will definitely stump you if you aren't active on Discord, show up to office hours all the time, or have a solid study group. However, the class content is quite engaging and makes you grossed out by eating.
He does not teach the lab class! TAs teach it, and you have to buy the $70 OUTDATED and INACCURATE lab manual for the lab. He was never seen during the whole quarter but then writes the final and includes material that was NEVER mentioned in class without any input from the TAs who actually taught. And then no curve either. So unfair and misleading
TAs cover what they want and you just hope for the best on the lab practical. They also don't help with physiology and just say you need to read more literature on the topic. Maybe they don't know it either? Lab report and other assignments are super time consuming with finding primary sources. I have probably never written so much in a class EVER.
Despite dedicating countless hours to studying and seeking help during office hours, I still failed the class. The most memorable interaction with the professor came after failing again. His parting words were dismissive, suggesting this wasn't the path for me and that some aren't cut out for university.
Dr. B is a great lecturer! His class consists of 2-hour lectures twice a week and 1 discussion. Not many assignments are given, and the tests are the predominant part of your grade. MC part is very relevant to lectures and written portion is based on discussions. Note to be very specific and study well! Highly recommend.
Bad Bad lab practical that he never gives any information on how to prepare for. You feel lost a majority of the quarter, even when trying your hardest every day. Lab practical drops you basically 10% in the class no matter what.
Absolutely not. I don't know why this class even continues at this school. Bad and non-existent professor. Get ready to study, study, study, and still be clueless on the lab practical. I would give him a 0 if I could.
Passionate about the subject, practically ghosts you outside of OH. So inaccessible via email, and doesn't respond to any inquiries/ questions. Tests are broken up into MCQ & Long answer, and demand specifics. The long answer is graded harshly based on exact sentences. Little to no partial credit, and TAs don't know what material is tested.
Bautista is not accessible outside class. He needed to make a change in my grade and it's been three weeks still nothing. From the back and forth emails with him I realized he's not that caring, not on time and forgets what he promises to students aka not the man of his words. He is a good lecturer but for NPB 101 he never once showed up!
I took NPB 101 during summer and it was SHORT and difficult but definitely doable so I did it. Be prepared for A LOT of reading / studying/ memorizing.he made the topics so interesting and easy to grasp, he relates topic to real world issues. There are quizzes 2 midterms MC,1 cumulative final exam.he curves the grade too
MY FAVE PROF! I attended lecture bc he was just that good. Sweet caring person when you go up to ask for clarification. He makes the topic so interesting. This is my first time taking NPB. It was def hard to memorize
My favorite professor I've taken! Dr. B explains everything very clearly in lecture and makes this class super fun and easy to understand. Highly recommend taking this class :)
Took during SS1. Really enjoyed his class!! Super sweet and makes the lecture entertaining. A little unclear with grading so try to always aim to do your best!! As long as you have good study habits, getting a good grade in this class is not hard. Studying with someone else/group is what worked best for me. I would take again him/the class again!
The course is completely TA-driven, with the professor hardly involved. Prepare to teach yourself the material and stay on top of weekly assignments. Unstuckstudy AI was a lifesaver for study prep, but the lab practical remains a mystery.
Class is ENTIRELY TA ran. If you get a bad TA, good luck. I didn't even know who the professor was until the day of the lab practical, but he writes the final. How does that make sense? I felt lost most of the quarter even though I studied tremendously and my TA was no help whatsoever. If you have to take this class, best of luck to you.
Funny, nice, and a great lecturer. I found the class really interesting and I grew to like his lecture style- which is drawing/writing notes during lecture instead of slides. Very helpful during office hours/asking questions directly. Tests are like practice exams and with good studying habits/regularly attending lecture, you can get a good grade!
Less about the professor and moreso the class. It is entirely based on the TA; Bautista writes the final exam and that's about it. Do not procrastinate on the assignments and ask your TA in office hours to review your work before you turn it in.
The course is TA-dependent. Recommend going to office hours and asking for help. Attend a different TAs office hours if needed. Lab practical was difficult but doable. Study all the physio and labs from the course and you'll be fine.
Teaches like a college prof should--no assignments except tests. Great at explaining complex concepts. Does all lectures by writing on iPad. Take his advice and rewrite each lecture afterwards. I did not struggle at all and got an A. Barely uses Canvas, doesn't post any announcements so some logistics were unclear. Very passionate for his subject.
Do not expect a letter of recommendation from this professor even if you attend every class, ask questions after/during class, and attend most office hours. Even as an academic with a PhD himself who likely needed endorsement to get where he is today... he still refuses to endorse students who went above and been to get an A in his class...
Had Bautista for NPB101 and NPB114. Majority of the grade in both courses comes from midterms and a final, all multiple choice. All exam material is from the lectures. Some exam questions had small details from lecture, so I recommend flashcards for lecture material. Overall I loved Bautista. His exams are predictable, fair, no trick questions.
I M IN DEEP F-ING TRENCHES RN. i hate hate hate the writting for this class. WHY IS THERE SO MUCH WRITTTING!!??/ I JUST DONT fing UNDERSTAND
This guy is really nice, he seems to explain things nicely but then the test comes around and it's impossible to know what to expect. Moreover, afterwards, he doesn't even allow you to see what you got wrong and the cycle continues. The short answer portion of the exams is insanely difficult just because it's hard to know what he's looking for.
I'd rather take the Physics 7 series all over again than this class. Good luck if you get a terrible TA. Ridiculously stressful class with unclear grading criteria and TA's who are harsh graders. The structure of this class is terrible with an unnecessary amount of work for no reason. Very time-consuming and annoying.
Class is entirely TA dependent, I personally had a good TA which helped. The only other thing I'd change is having discussion before the lab. Besides that I don't understand the hate for 101L, its not a GenChem lab, rushing to finish data makes the report infinitely harder. Its prolly the closest thing bio majors have to a senior lab, so attend OH.
Super tough grader on short answers for midterms (asks for literal word for word processes and definitions) Doesn't even cover every lecture for midterms, midterms are based off maybe 1-2 out of the 5 possible lectures that could be on, and most of the time the lectures don't help so self studying those lectures is useful.Practice exams are no HELP
The professor does not do any teaching and grade is purely TA dependent, besides the lab practical. PSA the professor is not the nicest. Would NOT recommend this professor whatsoever.
He's just very checked out of this class, you never meet him or get any correspondence from him. He wouldn't even respond to emails from the TAs. Even after the average for our section on the final was a 55% and only the top 25% quartile received a C- or above he wouldn't curve the class. He probably didn't even notice.
Dr. Bautista is enthusiastic about the material and gives good lectures. The exams are extremely difficult, and nothing in lecture, discussion, homework, or the practice exams will properly prepare you. Prepare to teach yourself, and don't fall behind. He generally doesn't let you see old exams, and is virtually unreachable over email.
Class was hard. There was A LOT of material. The way I studied and got an A+ was by going to lectures, listening to him and them going home, watching lectures again at slow speed and taking deep notes and then teaching myself from those detailed notes. You will have to teach yourself. Bautista is okay teacher but the material is too hard and long.
the class was hard but its doable. go to your TAs office hours for the papers and you'll be fine. you need to memorize everything from the discussion for the lab practical. as long as you put effort into the class you will do well
This was a challenging course, but not impossible to succeed in! Be prepared to commit lots of time studying for the practical and working on papers; take advantage of your TA's resources and office hours. Start making a study guide of all the labs early to make it easier to study for the lab practical. My section's lab practical average was 72%.
Almost unreachable outside of class, if you have a question about the wording on the exams he wont answer you. He has no tips to memorize anything beyond watching his lectures. He wont respond to your emails. If you're not avaliable for his office hours then you're out of luck to see your exam. No compromise, last minute communication. Just awful
You know there is a problem in either the TA teaching, course structure, or professor exam writing when the lab practical was a 65% average and a high of 82%, and the professor doesn't curve. Guarantee not a single person in this class got an overall of above 93%. The professor needs to write a clearer lab practical exam...
Really interesting class, but overall very content-heavy. Grade is made up of two midterms, one final, all MCQ, so there is little room for error. Some students did really well. However, if you are not really interested in the content, I would not recommend it.
he doesn't teach lab, TA's do and most of them are awful. if you're lucky you'll get a TA that actually cares.
I was recommended him from people who took 110A and other classes. His explanations would contradict each other, he was impossible to reach by email. I had work at the time of his office hours, and it was impossible for me to look at previous exams. Puts stuff in his exams he never taught in class, and he's super condescending when explaining.
Not a fan of this course structure at all. Lab practical is worth 33% of your grade, written by Bautista (who has never shown up to the class before). Taught completely by TAs, so you hope to get lucky. Ridiculous 5-question in-class quizzes are worth nearly 30% of your grade (no drops). No guidelines/ structure for lab reports.
Difficult course but not impossible to do well. Best way to succeed is to go to lecture and then rewatch + take extremely detailed notes. Asks extremely niche and questions about minor details often glossed over. There's no textbook or reference for course material outside what he SAYS and writes down during the lecture. Good luck.
Difficult course. Little support. Do your best taking notes and reviewing his lectures and you'll do fine. BEWARE of using outside sources or ChatGPT to explain concepts--he teaches things in a very specific way.
