I took this class over the summer it was very interesting. Teacher uses curse words and slang words for parts of the body does not mean to offend anyone. Very nice. Informal class setting. Open book tests multiple choice. Word/definition tests. Presentation. Article review 3 pages long. Final exam not cumulative. Standard absent rules. Fun Teacher!
Fun & Educational. Never thought I would talk so much about sex! Espen is very engaging & knowledgeable. The syllabus is direct: You read all the chapters and participate; you will do well. The tests ARE open-book, but you need to know how-to get around the book. Interesting discussions & videos. Great Class. I would definitely take Espen again.
WoW! That was fun, educational, and definitely eye-opening! Espen really enjoys teaching and it shows. He shares a lot currnt research information not in the textbook, but relevant to the course. I enjoyed the movies. Do read the text book ~ There's some truly crazy stuff in there. I would recommend Espen. He also teaches PSY 101 @ MiraMar.
I have Espen this semester and he is very good. In fact, I am going to take his class in the Spring (Family Relations PSY 135). Definitely one of the better teachers I've had @ Mesa.
Very Fun Teacher! I wish I could have him for all my classes. He makes learning fun. Read the book. Give feedback during class. One paper and speech due with open text book during test. This class and teacher is well worth every penny.
Espen is committed to helping students achieve. He makes adjustments for various learning abilities but maintains academic standards including attendance. This was a fun course; very useful. I hope to take him again next semester for Psy135/family relations. Highly recommended for those that want to enter psychology.
By far the best teacher ever! Mr. Correll shares examples from professional experience as a therapist and goes above~and~beyond to make accommodations for each student's success. The book was well worth the read. I may have to go to Miramar next semester just to take him again. I wish he taught more courses at Mesa College.
Thank You Espen for teaching us about Sexual Health. I really appreciate the extra time Espen took to share current research and hot topics; Each day there is something in the news that we discussed in the classroom. If you get a chance, Sign up for Espen's course.
Theories of Personality is a much tougher subject than I imagined but I am glad that I chose Espen as my instructor. He makes the class relevant and fun. *Beware: He demands high academic standards regarding work completed, attendance, and classroom participation. If you are serious about learning psychology, sign up!
Fairly interesting. If you want any feedback or grades wait 6 months if you are lucky. I'll be old and gray when our papers are graded. His tests are ridiculous. Not a fair assessment of knowledge, more for his amusement
Great instructor! Very helpful and if you have a learning disibility, he workds with you and makes it workable throughout the semester. I highly recommend this instructor. Read the syllabus and do EXACTLY what is asked and receive a better grade! Will take this instructor again and again!
Espen is one of the best! I've been in different schools as an undergraduate & graduate. Few professors have as much energy & motivation to help students learn. True, he demands competence. If you want an Easy A without work take another professor. If you want to learn Espen will share his knowledge & experience not just read the textbook. Enjoy!
AMAZING TEACHER!! VERY HELPFUL AND FLEXIBLE WITH ASSIGNMENTS. ALWAYS WILLING TO TALK TO YOU AND HELP YOU AFTER CLASS. IF YOU SHOW THAT YOU WANT TO LEARN AND DO WELL THEN YOU'LL AT LEAST GET A B OR A. Quizes are easy A just memorization, 4 tests, a easy presentation and Journal that he'll let everyone redo. Very nice guy enthusiastic&funny.TAKE HIM!
Honestly, Espen is amazing. I have NeVeR had a prof show more interest in helping students learn & grow professionally. He does require attendance, he is picky about punctuation on papers, but you will definitely leave with a better understanding of the course & psychology in general. I will definitly take him next semsester PSYC 161, 155, or 137.
Honestly, I really love his style. This is the third class I've taken b/c Espen's great! Students get upset b/c he requires participation and analytical thinking. Frankly, I want to be challenged so that I am better prepared to transfer to graduate school. Definitely print the study guide and read the textbook. Exams are comprehensive w/lectures.
Espen encourages students 2 ask questions, 2 explore the field of psychology, & 2 be active members of the community. Must use APA Style, meet deadlines, and participate. The syllabus is straightforward. There's plenty of opportunity for extra credit. Our entire class loved going even though it was a 3-hour course. You will be challenged & learn.
I want to have drinks with this guy and be his best friend. Damn fraternization policies. Idiots go in thinking they know everything about sex and don't show up to class. Then bish and moan because they get bad grades. Move out of your mommy's home, do your homework and shut up. He even gives bonus points! You have to be an idiot not to get an A.
Espen's style of teaching encourages participation to keep the class engaged.Test require the students to fully understand topics/theories. The required assigned books are very helpful if read and highly applicable to our every day lives.
Wow! I didn't realize how much I didn't know about sex! Prof Espen's passionate about teaching & helping students learn is very motivating. I have decided to pursue a career in psychology. I want to become a sex therapist. Hint, read the study guide, do the extra credit, & show up for class. The discussions are well worth the effort to get there.
Espen was great! He was very open and passionate about the class. He was flexible and always willing to help. Tests were straight out of the textbook, with some questions from lectures/powerpoints. He was also very flexible with test corrections. Great professor!
Because of this class I have decided to become a licensed marriage & family therapist. Espen shares anecdotes from his private practice work as it relates to the course material. The in-class discussions were the most interesting I have ever had in a college course. Read study guide for exams. I hope to get into his Personality course this fall.
Hilarious guy. If he thinks you can take it he'll poke fun at you but seems to like all students. Tests are straight out of the textbook. Wants everyone to get good grades. Exam discussions: "ok, answer B was correct, but I can see how C is correct too, so make a + if you answered C" Lots of extra credit options too.
love him. Love the class. Skrew the tests. I regret taking this class, only because I personally was not a fan of his tests...I have A's in all my classes except for this one. definitely had to have a cry sesh with myself after those tests. Read EVERY single page from the textbook too. :P hard class.
Great teacher..enjoyed the class..would take it again in a heartbeat.
My friend and I are always saying how we miss this class and teacher! He's really awesome, funny, helpful, talkative, easy to learn from, very approachable, encourages discussion. Tests got tricky sometimes, mostly because with this material answers aren't always black and white, but he goes over them and let's you fight some. Highly recommend!
Take this class! Espen is, by-far, my favourite instructor at Mesa College (and I've had many). He works in the field & brings a great deal of real-life examples into the classroom. Lecture discussions are NEVER dull. Use the Study Guides, get your papers in by the deadline, & you'll be fine. Extra Credit=fun. Enjoy the class and live #SexPositive
Espen is amazing! His classes are engaging and thought provoking, he is a fair grader and he gets students encouraged to learn. He truly seems passionate about what he does, and he wants to motivate students to be passionate as well. All test have a study guide, hw is just reading, and the class discusssion/lectures are super fun! Favorite class.
Look, Take this class. Take any class with Espen! You have no idea how much U will learn about Urself, Ur relationships, & how others relate to You. I learned APA Style, Scientific Research methods, & current theories. I really didn't want 2 take a PM class but friends told me 2 take Espen's class & I'm glad that I did. Oh yeah, so is my fiance' =P
TAKE ESPEN! Espen, is one of the two best professors I've ever had. His class can be hard but if you do the work and show up, you will learn more than you ever had before. You will def do a lot of work in his class, BUT you will leave his class a different but better person than before you go into it. He gives study guides for the tests too. :)
I'm really excited, just got into my 3rd class w/E! Classes are challenging, that's what I want. E sets high standards for critical thinking & theory application which you need to pass the exams-really. "There's no CORRECT answer in life" Read the syllabus, attend class, engage in the lectures, work through Study Guides and you're golden-to-pass.
I just have to write, We're about mid-semester & I love these classes. That said, many students don't come prepared; they complain in class but have not read the book or opened the study guide. Uh, duh... You will not understand. Be an adult and accept your own lack of responsibility so the rest of us can learn without your tantrums & complaints!
What to say? Espen is Awesome! Honestly, he really cares. I have taken classes @ SDSU & UCSD; Espen is The Most Dedicated Professor to student success. I guarantee, if you have one class w/him, you'll want to take all the courses he teaches. In only wish I could have him as my therapist! Oh, Participate in class, he loves it. #GoTeamE
if you want to get an easy A, I suggest you never take his class. But if your purpose is to learn in dept, his class can help you achieve that. he is brilliant, knowledgable and makes you challenge yourself.
I love his style! Espen is refreshing, knowledgeable, & dedicated to student learning. He goes Far Above & Beyond the call-of-duty to provide new learning tools each week. He created study guides, has in-class exercises, personally responds to each email, and did I mention(?) Espen often stays as late as 11 PM to meet with students after class.
The Best! This is my first class with Espen. He's really knowledgeable, articulate, and cares that students "get it". He goes out of his way to be fair, to accommodate life----as it happens! Really, this will not be my last, I only wish he taught MORE courses. BTW--- I heard he's an awesome therapist (if you're looking for one!).
NEW #Favourite Professor. I have taken classes on the east coast, in Europe, & across the State. Mr. Correll TOPS MY LIST of most dedicated, most accommodating,& most accessible. I had a tough semester. Last Min. Change of prof, Revised DSM, County Fires, & numerous personal challenges. Mr. Correll responded professionally & compassionately to each
i can only add 2 what's been said, This guy is Awesome!I've had Espen for 3-courses & want more. Hope he starts teaching fulltime b/c he's one of the best in the District. This guy cares about student learning. He goes out of his way to make-sure you are prepared for 4-yr university. Who does that? When I transfer, look-out UCSD - I know APA Style!
3 words, "Take his class"
The course was very interesting ~ we were the first class to use DSM-5 criteria. Loved the Online Textbook and resources. Espen is very creative. Each exam was unique and fun! Really, He is much better than my graduate professors! He responds quickly to email and was flexible with the classes' needs throughout the semester.
This was my third class w/ Espen- next semester, #4. Just do the work people ...show up, turn in your assignments, and don't beg for extra credit b/c YOU flaked all semester. The idea of registering for classes is to participate and learn. Otherwise, stay home and enroll online (please!). BTW - Espen loves helping students learn and WE LOVE HIM!!!!
I wish I was a Psych major so that I could take every single one of his classes. Best college prof I've ever had (And I've had a lot).
I cannot believe how much I love this guy. Seriously, and dude, i'm totally not fond of teachers --- especially night courses. BUT, Espen has a way of getting everyone involved. In fact, I think I know everyone's name because he facilitates such good discussions and everyone wants to share their experiences of the topics. KEY: use the study guide
The topic of marriage & relationships frightens me (big time!). Mr. Correll breaks it down into very interesting class discussions. It surprises me how much he knows during lectures - I guess it's his life (as a therapist). Students don't want to leave the classroom even after a long 3-hour evening class. His tests are challenging, be prepared.
He's charismatic, funny, experienced. Facilitates discussions in a way that includes everyone in the class. Do the study guides, do your reading, show up and you'll test well. They're sometimes tricky and not on the study guide so be prepared. Do all your assignments, there's few. Ask for help and you'll get it, he really does work with you.
ESPEN IS THE BEST! There are 4 exams, 1 book report, 1 research paper/presentation & opportunity for extra credit. This class is fin & beyond interesting, Espen is open and entertaining! Expect to participate during lecture. He has study guides, and reviews before an exam. There should be no reason a student doesn't pass. He is extremely understing
Prof Espen changed my life. Our class was small & intimate, but we learned so much. Each student was able to participate, the discussions were 'lively' and I was definitely challenged to learn. Espen encouraged us to learn 'outside' the text which really peaked my interest in psychology. I had no idea there were so many diverse theories! Take this
Professor Correll went out of his way to make sure everyone in our class felt comfortable with some pretty uncomfortable issues that came up during the course. He stayed after class to meet w/students one-on-one and followed up with email when students expressed personal issues. I have never had an instructor who cared this much about his students
This was a fun course. Loved the lectures and discussions. I learned a great deal about APA Style and Principles of Psychology in addition to exploring historical theorists. I like that Espen asks us to think critically about the concepts not just memorize test answers. This was very challenging at first, but we all grew to love it by the final.
I was not a very good student, but he was an amazing teacher. Lectures were interesting because he allowed people to share their personal stories. DO THE WORK!!!
I nearly dropped out of school because of family issues. Mr. Correll took the time to contact me, offered me resources to get support, and worked with me to successfully complete the course. I am forever grateful and would absolutely recommend taking his classes -All of them! By the way, if you use the study guides, you will score better on tests.
Best professor in psychology! I have a bachelors and came back to talk a few refresher courses. Professor Correll beats all my prior instructors for sure. His course is well organized, engaging, and fun. Espen is passionate about student learning and he knows his psychology. You will be challenged to see things through critical reasoning.
By Far My Favourite Professor in The Psychology Department. This is my third class with Espen. Absolutely recommend the night sections of his courses ----the students are more committed and engaged with the class. You must follow the syllabus - Use the Study Guides, complete the Paper and you will learn amazing things about psychology & yourself!
Professor Espen is very engaging during lectures. He is uniquely skilled at making all the material relevant to our lives, often with comedic timing ! As a therapist and researcher, he is able to make abstract and complex and theories seem tangible and intriguing. We had many great, thoughtful, and informative discussions during class. #TakeEspen
Mr. Correll is perfect for this class. He is a therapist and knows a great deal about couples, relationships, and family systems. I was so inspired in this class that I have changed my major to Psychology and want to become an MFT. I have also taken his Human Sexuality Class. Next semester, Personality. Follow the syllabus & use the Study Guides.
So unorganized when I took the class. Wouldn't respond to emails regarding homework until the day before it was due (if at all), his tests and email formatting looked like a child wrote them, we were told to buy the 10th edition of the textbook when he used the 11th and his tests were based off the 11th, and more than I can fit in 350 characters.
The syllabus is very organized. Espen provides detailed instructions & samples online for each assignment. Along with great in-class lectures, sample test questions and Study Guides, He reviews each test afterwards so you can improve your grade. Mr Correll's lectures really make the material come alive. Definitely recommend you take his classes.
Espen missed a good 6 classes and then called students to make an attendance sheet while he missed class. Why should we be there if he isn't? He's late 90% of the time, is rude and interrupts during presentations, constantly off topic. Also text book heavy, with rare on topic lectures. His words "I am not here to teach, I am here to facilitate".
Mr. Correll states his expectations on day one - he provides a detailed syllabus, study guides for each exam and samples of the independent projects. Of course he gets upset when folks slack-off. IMO, if you aren't ready for college, don't sign up. This was not my major, but Espen was so inspiring & encouraging, New Goal - become an MFT therapist
honestly, i feel so much better after the final. it is a tough course - a lot of personal feelings come up when people discuss relationship issues and family. i know that i learned a great deal from the dynamics of our course. the assignments were really helpful for my preparation for college. many students want easy night classes. i want to learn.
First friday only class. I really mean "if you skip class, you'll be sorry"- a lot gets covered in a day. Teacher was late almost every lecture time and often got off topic for several minutes. all correspondents must be through email and labeled very specifically. Test answers are very specific, so watch the wording.
Really excited for Spring 2017. I had Mr. Correll last semester. His courses are challenging but we learned a lot! You will have 4 tests (not cumulative), a paper, and presentation on that topic. Follow the syllabus deadlines, all instructions and sample assignments on blackboard. Stay focused on the Study Guides. The discussions are great.
Correll is a great professor and it shows in his lectures. He cares about the material, is engaging and will explain further or in a different way if something is confusing you. There are some papers and a bit of homework but his grading is really easy, he offers extra credit for doing study guides so if you don't pass the class its really on you.
Prof. Espen is terrific. He set very clear goals from day one (scared a bunch of people away, LOL) but was direct about his expectations. He provides samples of each project. Follow the guidelines & you're golden. Our class was small & we really had a good experience. Definitely complete the study guides & use the writing center for extra credit.
1st, the lectures are awesome. We had some amazing discussions, gr8 films, quite a few 'talks' that make ya go hmmmm. Get to work early. The dates are posted and the work creeps up on ya! If you follow the instructions, complete the study guides, and read the chapters life is golden. Espen provides a very safe place to discuss 'hot topics'. Enjoy
Class is so boring, and he makes you talk A LOT. Very boring. This is not a basket-weaving class.
One of the most interesting classes & professors at Mesa College. This is the only class where an instructor gives feedback after an exam & allows students to discuss ways to improve their grades on future projects. I learned far more than expected; even changed my major to PSYCHOLOGY. Espen cares & works very hard to help students succeed. Enjoy!
Love the subject, but can't say the same about Professor Correll. He calls you out in class, making it uncomfortable to speak up and makes you feel pressured to do so. Makes sarcastic comments to personally victimize you, and the class as a whole if you don't give his lectures the attention he expects. Class would be great if he wasn't so rude.
Professor Correll provided lots of structure ---some folks appeared unprepared for the level of academic work. That said, I enjoyed the lectures, the resources, and the class discussions - they REALLY opened my eyes to things I hadn't considered before about relationships. I would definitely take another course with Espen--- p.s. Study Guides! :P
He seems very clear and organized at first but by the end of the semester it's clear that he is not. His tests aren't extremely hard but if you miss class or don't keep up with the reading expect low grades. He grades really tough for the final presentation and he does very little explaining about assignments in class. Good luck if you enroll.
I'm in love with him. I got out of my way to take 2+ classes from this guy that I didn't even need for my major <3 !He is so vibrant and full of life(or stories or energy or all of it at once!) that it's sometimes the only thing I looked forward to that week haha needless to say you do need to do the work + study to pass but it's cool stuff !! D
The subject is great but I can't say the same about Professor Correll. The topics and discussions are interesting but he makes students very uncomfortable sharing and calls students out all the time, sometimes he gets so irritated with students that he will walk out of the classroom to "cool down". If you're a sensitive person avoid this class.
At first was a very interesting class but then became very boring when we would just read straight out of the book. It is your responsibility to take your own notes while reading. Very unorganized during the end of the semester and does not update grades. Make sure you bring the book to all class sessions...
This professor is absolutely amazing & makes his lectures entertaining! Like any class you should read the textbook, it go hand in hand with the lectures. If I ever have the option to take him, I wouldnt even hesitate. Keep up on your readings, participate in class, take good notes & youll be just fine!
He is a really great professor who really cares about his students and is sure that everyone understands the material. There is quite a bit of work but if you take a little time to study you'll be fine. If you are having trouble with any assignments he is always willing to help you out to make sure you do good. He really appreciates participation.
Super cool professor - he was accessible to students and always authentic. espen is clear from day 1 about his expectations and provides lots of resources and support. it seems that some students want an easy class, i worked hard and learned a lot. you should definitely take his classes. complete the study guides and go to office hours as needed.
Probably one of the worst professors Ive ever had. Id rather take chem again that his class. Doesnt have PP & mainly tells personal stories. Notes are taken on own. Kind of rude & disrespectful to students, very short temper. Tests are on material you didnt even discuss. Doesnt give you study guides & you have to make your own & hope for best!
Absolutely loved this class and Espen. I have taken 3 courses with him. The course syllabus is very detailed and there's a sample of each assignment on blackboard. In addition to the study guides he offers an extra out-of-class review session for the first, midterm and final exams. Who else does that? Honestly, I feel in love with PSYC bc of him.
I LOVED taking his class. He is very passionate, inspiring, and wants you to do well. Follow the syllabus, show up, read the book, and fill out the study guide. He was available for any questions, and even set up study sessions for those that were interested. His class made me want to show up. Definitely take his classes !
He is a nice man who cares for his students (though he is not afraid to embarrass students in his class if they mess up). He doesnt have a canvas, there isnt any clear grading criteria for his assignment, his exams/quizzes dont match up with his lectures, and he only uses email when it comes to sending instructions/receiving assignment.
DON"T get fooled by him from the first few weeks of class. He quickly became so disorganized with no clear instructions for assignments and always changed the due dates. His lectures and reading assignments do not cover everything that he puts on the exams. He rudely lashes out at students and calls people out for no apparent reason. Odd man.
This class reminded me of my last relationship. At first I was really excited and it looked promising, but about a month into it I realized I had made a huge mistake. First red flag was he didn't give out the class schedule till three weeks into the semester. I'm not joking, there were SEVEN STUDENTS remaining by the final exam. Save yourself now.
His class was super disorganized. He reads straight from the textbook during lecture. Sometimes, his definitions did not match the textbook making it confusing to study. He gives you study guides, but some of the material from the study guides do not show up on the test. He tests you on small, trivial facts. He calls on you if no one participates.
Professor Correll was very disorganized. Once we moved online, we started working through the textbook instead of his own course materials he created. He first said that zoom lectures were not mandatory, but started grading attendance on zoom a few lectures after he said that statement. I would not take this professor if possible.
mr espen is terrific! i took his course in spring '20 + we had to go online bc of CV19. everyone was so stressed out but mr espen made individual appts with each student to discuss their situation - housing, mental health, access to food and such. mr espen was the only prof to even provide infor to our classes. i plan to take more classes in fall.
I had Prof Correll during Spring '20. He was truly Amazing! Accommodating & concerned about each student as we transitioned to online coursework. He scheduled weekly check-ins for our class & he met w/each student one:one/Zoom. In fact, he sent a weekly resource email to everyone w/suggestions for academic, social and mental support. Much Respect!
Super excited to start classes again with Professor Correll. This will be my 3rd semester + 4th course. Once you get to into the routine of things the course becomes more manageable. My best suggestion is to mark all the deadlines in your calendar and try to get things in early & pace yourself. I've learned so much about psych/research + careers.
Imposes his far left views on his students. Defends p edophiles and m urderers. Does not actually know how to use the program that he makes his students use to submit assignments.
My counselor had advised me that I didnt HAVE to take this class, but it seemed incredibly interesting so I did anyway. Big mistake. Content was intriguing, but when being instructed by an emotionally charged, uncommunicative and disorganized Professor, it made the class extremely unpleasant. Please heed feedback prior to enrollment...
if you are reading this to decide whether to take this class or not, then DONT! the most disorganized and disrespectful professor on earth! his aim is to embarrass his students and make them feel stupid. instructions? be ready for instructions written by a 5 year old and no email replies. need help with class? wont find it. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS
I thought the professor was unorganized. I had a hard time understanding his emails and how to do some assignments. I did enjoy learning the material though.
I was nervous to take this class because of some reviews saying he was disrespectful and called out students. However, they could not be more wrong, I have never met a professor more willing to help students and hear everyone's opinion! Very little homework and one paper that he guides you through the entire thing! Would take again!
I took his class based on some previews reviews. However, I made a mistake. Makes you buy a $70+ book on Cengage and he does not include your hard work on the grades. your only grade is based on a report he makes you read and present. All his emails are a mess. no replies. you have a question he refers you to his syllabus with no help at all. Sad!
Mandatory zoom meetings. Gives lectures from the textbook. I honestly felt like I was in a gender theory class than a psychology class. If i wanted to learn about the leftist agenda I would've taken a liberal arts class, not a psychology class. I can really tell this professor was pushing a leftist agenda and not really teaching psychology.
The Professor was a great teacher, he really knew what he was teaching and did a great job at answering any questions on the lecture. The class was really easy to pass, really only uses Cengage and a final research paper. His instructions were really unclear half the time though, and will just tell you to refer to the syllabus.
Worst professor I have ever met. Im an A student, never seen a D in my life until I took this class. took the class again with another professor and got an A. I met with him during office hours and he was the most unprofessional and rudest ever. He said things a professor should never say to a student. His instructions are disorganised and awful
So disorganized! Doesn't post class content until the 1st day, so you can't prepare anything ahead of time. The syllabus & class materials are ridiculously hectic to read. He's unclear about expectations (attendance, participation) & gets mad at students during lecture, calling them out. Lectures directly from the book. Worst professor experience.
bro was a G would take him again if i had the chance
Professor Correll was nothing but respectful and caring. His class is tough if you do not keep up with the reading and make sure you complete all your assignments before the deadline which is usually the morning before class (at least in my case). If you are having a hard time and reach out to him, he will be understanding and helpful. Participate!
BEST PROF!! take this class if u wanna be reminded what a good teacher is. 10/10
Professor Correll's class is a mixed bag - while lectures can be disorganized, engaging with his teaching style works well. unstuck AI and the textbook are essential for study prep. Overall, a challenging but rewarding course.
Amazing teacher, is quite a character but is very caring and grading was super lenient.
Professor let's people talk out of turn to the point where it takes up most the class time. He allows wildly inappropriate conversations to take place. I was asked a very uncomfortable and out of turn question in front of the whole class, joke or not it was disgusting to ask a student. He needs to learn professionalism, its gross.
