Dr. Diaz is a blast! He does his best to break things down but this is ABSTRACT alg. He encourages students to go to his office and I can tell you that it is worth it. He gauges where you are, finds your weak areas, and makes you practice. Super nice Dr. and constantly encourages students that they can do it! Take him!
One of the best professors I've personally had at UTA. He has an accent which makes some things difficult to understand and questions that he makes on tests may be vague but that is the only complaint. He cares a lot about his students and wants you to learn. If you know and understand the homework you will pass. Tests are based off of homework.
Easy A Class, just do the homework and show up for the exams and you'll be fine. Never showed up to class, but received an A with minimum effort, Professor Diaz is funny and knows his stuff for the most part, he is easily accessible through email or office hours for clarification in difficult concepts.
I had Dr. Diaz back in the spring 2017 semester, and I have to say passing this course was the hardest thing I have done in my life. Dr. Diaz was unusually caring, and is one of the warmest professors I know. He has different teaching techniques. I will not sugarcoat anything; he makes you WORK for a good grade. I was on his good side and made a C.
Easy A class, just do the homework and show up on exam days. He is a funny dude and pretty chill, he is easily accessible outside of class, and is willing to help with confusing concepts. Great Class
Hes funny and really helpful. Hes flexible with due dates but he moves very quickly during lecture and he uses every minute. He will always help you and give you examples during his office hours. he teaches better during his office hours and you will definitely understand better if you go. Hes a joy, and I looked forward to his class every week
Easily one of the best professors I've had so far. Attending class is very helpful in understanding concepts and problems, plus he'll notice if you didn't attend and might say something to you if he sees you in lab or outside class. He's also very funny and makes attending class enjoyable. Homework isn't too heavy and he's flexible with assignments
Diaz moves so slow on the material that is so simple and sped through the last unit (interest etc.) because he didn't allow enough time to teach the material. Also, he makes you waste so much paper each class! I never want to hear "take out a piece of paper" again. The class itself is so easy though. I made an A, but I'd never take Diaz again!!
Professor Diaz is a good professor. He offer more chances on quizzes. He also teaches the material slow.
Class is substantially easy if you're decent at math. I'd go to class but barely listen, because he went over topics slowly and sometimes confused himself and us when trying to figure out a problem. All tests are on online Pearson, so as long as you do the homework and maybe the study plan, you'll do good on the tests.
Dr. Diaz is a hilarious professor that lectures in a casual way, but he's not TOO casual. You still learn a lot from his lectures and you still have to study outside of class for the grade.
Loved Dr. Diaz's class. I am terrible at math, but I managed to squeeze a B on my first 2 exams, still studying for the final. I really did enjoy his lectures, he has a really fun personality, one of the few professors who actually looks like he enjoys math lol (in my experience). He really cares about his students, I would take him again 10/10.
does not teach very well, is not specific about the work, gives too much work and is always second guessing himself when you ask him a question, if you struggle with math i do not suggest you take him
One of the best professors ever!!!
Great professor, encourages you to show up to his office hours if you have any questions or just need someplace to study.
He is a funny person, but an alright professor. Towards the end his lectures got better, but for the most part I learned from Youtube videos (professor Leonard!) Midterms are heavily weighted (also curved) but there's only 4-6 questions and NO formula sheet. He curves a lot but that might not save you!
Professor Diaz was probably one of the most caring professors Ive ever had. He helps you a lot if you dont understand something. The class is not easy so you need to put a lot of effort but he will make sure you pass the class by letting u retake one of the tests if he sees you are really struggling. Overall I would take him again if I need to.
Never teaches same way twice. Decides what to teach at start of class, no planning. Fast through hard stuff and slow through easy. Midterms are easiest thing ever; final is departmental. Homework is 9 questions. Outside work is a lot if end up teaching yourself. Hilarious professor but don't like teaching style. Only teaches what's needed for final
He's funny and good at explaining, but you can't look away for too long or miss class without becoming confused. He would come up with confusing & random examples on the spot and you can tell he didn't plan/prepare beforehand. To get a good grade, you should skim the textbook & watch online videos. There are no reviews or formula sheets for tests.
If you can try and take college algebra at a community college, you have to write a two page paper about algebra. Its homework heavy and he is always second guessing himself. The lectures do not match up with the labs. The college algebra course is ridiculous and should not have to write a paper about algebra.
Dr. Diaz is one of the best math teachers I have ever had. He will listen to all of your questions and do his best to answer them. He does sometimes question himself, but no one is a perfect teacher. More than willing to help you when you ask.
He provides lots of homework online but he gives you a while to do it. Some of the questions given on the homework won't be taught in class but if you ask for help he would help. He likes to joke around a lot. Diaz also makes up examples to teach the class but you will notice that he randomly came up with it and did not put effort into it.
He may come off as an a hole, but he genuinely cares about his students passing and understanding the material. He offered corrections for the first midterm. His midterms and quizzes are all multiple choices. He's funny.
Gets very mad when people skip class, no phones, always late to class, too much homework, does not explain very well and moves through stuff very quickly. Do not recommend if you struggle with math.
Id give 1.5 out of 5 if I could. Hesa great person, but TERRIBLE professor. Although he takes thorough notes for our lectures, he doesnt say what topic in the textbook we do. Tests (take-home) arent at all what he teaches in class. Only reason I have a 90 is because I used Chegg. Hes great at what he knows but should use it somewhere else.
I genuinely don't remember learning anything at all. If u suck bad at math don't take this class. There is insane amount of work to do. Also, don't buy the manual bc he barely uses it. He's nice and funny but I didn't find him great at teaching.
Dr. Diaz is a really good professor! He is clear of what he excepts throughout the semester.
in lectures, he seems very unprepared. he confuses you more than teaches you. he is not very clear with what he wants on quizzes/exams. You have to ask for feedback &even then his feedback doesn't help you improve. The only reason I gave a 2 rather than a 0 is due to the fact that he gave extra assignments to raise your grade after exams.
Cal 3 at UTA is horribly managed and Diaz did not make it any easier. His lectures consisted of him just showing examples on Geogebra and not even explaining the math behind it. I stopped watching his lectures and just started reading the book (which I have never done in any class). There is so much to learn in Cal 3. DO NOT fall behind.
Try your best not to take this guy. He legit has no idea what he's doing and he takes like 3 months to grade everything. The material isn't too tough but you basically have to teach yourself.
Doesn't provide feedback. Provides post-tests, to boost exam score and redo questions. I started with an F and ended with an A. 99% comes from the textbook, except one question. Use your resources. Classmates don't help, just look at textbook solutions and use that for the quizzes and exams.
Don't take him unless you absolutely have to. He won't reopen hw and doesn't do test corrections. He very obviously doesn't like that he has to teach online and it hinders any teaching ability he had. Literally paid money to watch him play around on Geogebra.. The reviews for the exams weren't always helpful, so study a lot!
Reading the book will make your life a lot easier with understanding the concepts. Really unorganized professor when it came to lectures, and getting back to students on questions outside of class. Might have been a good professor in person, but not online. Don't expect the exams to be multiple choice(2nd exam for us was all free response).
Dr. Diaz is like a funny genius. He knows his stuff. Sometimes its hard for him to explain it to us. He loves to answer questions, and he loves to have students show him their work. He wants interaction. If you do the work, he will help you. He answers every message and has office hours. He really makes you think. Id take his class again.
Just like other people said try your best NOT to take this guy. He seems like a good person, but seems unorganized and sometimes is late to class. There's few assignments, but takes a while to grade everything.
This was probably the weirdest, most unorganized class I have ever had. I can't say that I really learned anything useful for my future in mathematics or education. He definitely doesn't follow the program guidelines for this class, he makes up everything on the spot so just try your best to understand his random scenarios and you will be okay.
Professor Diaz is great! He cares about his students and is really chill. There's a lot of extra credit opportunities. He gives partial credit on exams and has algebra coins that will help raise your grade too. However, he takes a while to grade things (like the partial credit forms) and respond to your emails. But he's a good professor for algebra
Really funny and relatable teacher. Makes you pay attention, and helps you imagine on how to use math in the real world.
VERY unorganized and doesnt know how to teach. Most if time wont help students. The class average was so low. Never responds to emails either. I would avoid him.
Diaz is a hilarious professor with a clear passion for math. He expects you to learn most of the material on your own, though, and lectures are used to go over practice problems and to teach the concepts he thinks will be more difficult. The textbook + online HW provide plenty of explanations, so do the homework and you should be okay.
Get ready for a lot of homework and lots of hours of studying. There is a lot of opportunity for extra credit and a lot of time to study.
He is a good teacher that is also pretty funny as well. Is very helpful if you have any questions about the course. Would take again!
best math prof ever. i failed this class my first sem and had to retake it, and I got a b this sem with him. he curves every test and offers lots of opportunities to get your grade up. he's really understanding and wants you to do well. talk to him if you are struggling, and he will definitely help you out. content is difficult and course is heavy.
Dr. Diaz is hilarious and I always enjoyed class. But you need to put in effort. Reading the book will help immensely as well as attending office hours to fill in any knowledge gaps. He was always available outside of class for any questions related to the material. He is a great professor that cares about his students.
Do the Homework before attending class lecture as he goes over how to set up and answer questions in class. During our class he takes attendance by asking you to "Take out a sheet of paper". Before the final he showed more passion to have all students pass class and set up study sessions for us. My class was silly which made lectures interesting.
He doesn't teach from the book like most professors, so the book is just used for extra practice problems if you need the help. The material can be really confusing to undertand, so don't be scared to ask for help. He'll definitely help if you just come to his office hours! He also gives assignments that boost test grades.
one of the worst professors. takes forever to finish a lecture, can't stay focus in teaching, never completely finish a math problem. he would tell silly jokes and laugh on his own. acts like a clown, never be serious with anything.
Wanted to like them but the entire semester felt like a roller-coaster by the end. You teach yourself via provided videos and their lectures are meant to be reviews, but quality could be very questionable. Has a tendency to make fun of people asking questions or even for no reason, which makes it hard to want to learn. Fair grader and extra credit.
Dr. Diaz is a great person and is always willing to help, but number theory is already hard as it is and I was confused most of the time during class. Its easy to get lost if you're not paying attention. Just come to class, read the textbook, youtube, cheg and go to office hours and tutoring if available. If you have to take him, just do your best.
Don't get me wrong, I love professor Diaz; he is funny and attentive but lacks organization in lecture and on canvas. Half the time he goes off topic and we don't finish a discussion then have to learn material ourselves which isn't that bad. He NEVER answers emails so don't even try.
Professor Diaz was an amazing professor. He balanced being very funny in lectures with making sure everyone understood exactly what was going on. His class was the first time I had ever looked forward to going to my math lectures. I'm actually a little sad his class is over.
The classwork is very easy. There is one essay but it's pretty easy. Attendance is mandatory with a minimum requirement of lab hours. Professor Diaz is very friendly and funny but can be hard to understand at times and isn't the best at understanding/answering questions directly. Only got a B because I got lazy at the end of the semester
The professor is extremely good at explaining the concepts around the topics in class. He is truly available outside of class. During our class he takes attendance by asking you to "Take out a sheet of paper". You can tell he cares about students and wants them to succeed. Make sure to start studying for the final when he tells you to.
I am typically a straight A student and have never gotten a C in a math course before. He's described his own teaching style as perpetual struggle before and has once spent 2 lectures without finishing a single example because he "didn't feel like it". If you take him be prepared to teach yourself and fight to pass.
Hard quiz each weekend & rarely reflected over his lectures...disorganized & focused on useless concepts & not solving example probs bc he "didn't feel like solving it"...1st exam was easy. Didn't prepare us for the final & taught us new concepts all the way to the end..take Calc 3 at a community college! He made it way harder than it needed to be.
If you have all the free time in the world and can spend multiple hours teaching yourself then go for it. He is disorganized, the syllabus is just for the show, and he does not even finish lectures in one class period. He has a god complex and tends to act right up until the drop date, then he will start showing his true colors. RUN AWAY FROM HIM!!
I had to watch bunch of YouTube videos in order to do remotely good in this class. It was all thanks to YouTube and not the disorganized professor. On top of that knowing the class was 5 weeks and over summer he overloaded the homeworks. I would not take him even during 13 weeks course because of how disorganized he is.
You basically have to teach yourself if you don't get a certain amount of subjects mastered on Aleks from the diagnostic
Does not teach very well and does not go over information properly. Stays on examples for way too long in such a short class period and does not ever seem to have a clear lecture on a single topic. I learn a whole lot more from a simple lecture video of 40 minutes over the topic than his class that is an hour and 20 minutes.
Diaz knows his math well but sometimes struggles to communicate how to solve the problems the hw system gives us. He's great at making up examples in class and explains things pretty well (although you rarely know what section he's lecturing on), and the exams he handmakes so they are simpler. He put effort into making the math relevant to arch.
Quite possibly the least racist professor I've had, with little to no signs of Alzheimer's as well! 10/10, read the book.
Professor doesn't teach anything during lab time and only goes over a few topics. If you start off extremly behind then you will never catch up because he gives way too much homework and group work. Also doesn't have clear grading criteria for the writing assignment
I will say this about him. He is a decent person but not a great lecturer in my opinion. Half the time, he would rarely explain the content and expects you to figure it out yourself. HW and Quizzes were just too difficult and going to office hours made no difference since he wouldn't want to help you out. Try to work with other people if you can.
Professor Diaz is great at explaining math principles (through use of multiple examples) during both lectures and office hours. He's got a great sense of humor. Giving 4/5 because his assignments tended to have too few problems on them, making mistakes more costly.
I would not like you to hurt your GPA. This professor never responds email promptly. He finishes his class much earlier. He doesn't explain materials more clearly. He is always late for class. He doesn't stay in his office. He is very tough. Be careful.
Do not take him if you struggle with math. Very fast-paced course. HEAVY on homework. He did not explain anything in the lectures rather just went over some examples. You have to learn everything on your own. Go take this class at TCC or just hold off until there is another option if you aren't the best at math.
All of the math majors I've talked to love this guy. He's extremely accessible outside class if you have questions on the topic. It's a discovery focused, proofs based math class which means you are not spoon fed information and expected to regurgitate that information blindly on exams. Even then, some questions were literally just calculations.
I was a little apprehensive because of some of the other reviews, but Professor Diaz is an amazing professor. He's hilarious and great about explaining new concepts and tying things together. He emphasizes understanding the material through experimentation rather than brute memorization, which is super important in Calculus II and on.
Teaching is not for everyone. And it's best Diaz take his knowledge of math to something else. Lectures and assignments are unbearably erratic. He has you do work before teaching the subject. Once announced a "follow up exam" to one we took the previous class so nonchalantly I thought he was joking. He ended up giving us another exam. Truly awful.
He makes simple things hard. I don't understand his writings on board (unorganized). His funny and entertaining but hard grader and hard quiz maker. He doesn't put quiz questions in exam. so studying quiz is useless. Oh by the way exam's free response questions are easier than his given quiz. We had a petal math one time and no one got it.
Would not recommend.
Taking this class was my worst decision ever. He made this class 20x harder than it should've been. His lectures were erratic and unorganized. A terrible balance of examples and theory in his lectures. The lectures, hw, quizzes, and exams are all too different. It's like taking 4 classes instead of 1. He is the bane of my existence. DO NOT TAKE.
The lectures were great and covered all of the material. This course used ALEKs as the way to provide homework and Lab time gave you plenty of time to do the work. The TAs were very helpful when he was not around to provide help. I would take this course if you manage your time well. He also provides a LOT of extra credit assignments!
I chose this professor despite the bad reviews in order to prove them wrong, but they were all accurate. This professor's discipline is cheap. He doesn't allow formula sheets on tests, lectures are unorganized and feels unnecessary to attend, Echo360 is disabled, and quizzes rarely align with the course sched; makes Calc 3 needlessly difficult.
He actually knows what he's teaching and also teaches the reasons why certain methods work. If you can't keep up with fast paced lessons, it might be difficult but he's always willing to help, slow down, and answer questions.
I truly dislike this professor, He has a thick and hard to understand accent. He doesn't actually teach you how to solve the math, he just does one question per unit with very poor explanation of what he did to get the answer and 60% of the time he was actually wrong. He also requires attendance but doesn't show the code, he is unprofessional.
Just not a good professor if you struggle with math, please find someone with better ratings.
Trust the process.
Worst professor so far.
If you ask him a question about the lesson he says figure it out or i don't know.
Bad professor
excellent but too much geogebra sometimes
As he says at the start, no ta, no labs, the final is 30% of your grade. Otherwise regular guy trying his best for us to learn. Plenty of office hours, use them.
absolutely terrible.
He's just a cool guy. Technically, there is no attendance check, but there is a quiz per class, so attendance is pretty much mandatory. Although you can miss three quizzes.
His lectures are genuinely terrible, quiz after every class and the quizzes are ridiculously hard. I wouldn't even complain about that but the quizzes are worth almost 20% of your grade. He sits on geogebra half the class and door a poor job of teaching.
Esteban Diaz is the WORST professor. Quizzes every single class and 18% of ur grade. No review material for exams. Quizzes are VERY hard BEWARE
Terrible professor, sure he is smart but good luck trying to learn anything in lecture. You will spend most of your time teaching yourself the topics. Quiz after every class which are also ridiculously hard (20% of your grade is quizzes) He will give you no review material before the exam nor tell you what will be on the exam.
His lectures were very disorganized. The quizzes after every class were frustrating because you had to create your own problem. He would give you a question and you had to create your own function and solve. The homework was excessive.2-3 homework,2 quizzes, hour long video pre-lectures sometimes. If you struggled in Calc 1/2, don't take this professor.
i wasnt a fan of his lectures he talked too slow and spends an entire class on 1-2 problems. i liked the TAs lectures a lot better than his. we have weekly lecture visits to watch and fill out notes, we had to attend his lecture and there were 2-3 homeworks every week, a quiz, and webcast problems. class had a lot of material to do
Funny and passionate guy. The way he is able to connect real applications to the concepts taught in class were really insightful while also nice to listen too. He really wants his students to dive deep into calculus and mathematics overall so be prepared for that. (can be overwhelming). Also be prepared for a lot of homework.
The workload for this class is heavy, but it is necessary for the subject matter, and his office hours are incredibly helpful. True, there is a quiz in every class, but this forces you to stay on top of the material and gives context to the lectures. Great professor to take this subject with because he is genuinely passionate about teaching.
He's a really good professor who actually tries to explain the materials in the more simple terms. Maybe it's not for everyone, but I find going to his office hour where he gives out practice problems really helps a lot.
The class in itself is naturally hard, but professor Diaz does a good job handling it overall. There are quizzes every class but as long as you understand your homework they are not too bad, and the two midterms are based on 80% of the quizzes you take so it all loops around in the end.
