Outstanding lecturer. Dynamic.Very engaging and knowledgeable. Creative. Participation and attendance a must in order to understand exams. This professor cares A LOT and makes sure his students learn. You will enjoy his class!
Awesome teacher! Funny and very interesting. Did not want to take this class at first but left LOVING IT! He is Great! TAKE HIM!!
You have 4 tests and can drop one. This was not an easy intro to fine arts class. I felt it was structured like an upper level Art History course. He expects a lot out of his students. You MUST READ and STUDY to pass. He is an amazing teacher and passionate. I would not take him again due to the amount of info that is needed to pass the class.
There is a lot of material so make sure you read the textbook and go to class. Attendance is also mandatory. One extra credit where you watch a movie and one in class group activity.
Absolutely love this class. granted, I am an art major and it comes easy to me. Yet anyone who pays attention to his humorous and engaging lectures can pass with ease.
Take his class. You have 4 exams and you can drop one. He gives reviews for you to read and the details on it are on. He is an engaging speaker and I actually signed up for another class that I needed that he happens to teach as well. This class is very easy to make hard, but he is more so interested in you passing. He gives points.
Professor Hinojosa's lectures are hilarious, informative, and engaging. You don't necessarily need the textbook for class, but I imagine it helps. I did very well for listening to lectures and studying the review he gives you a week before the exam, which is essentially all you need. Don't skip unless you need to. Would take another class he taught
He does use words that you might not understand on the test but he is willing to give you definitions if you don't understand the question. The lectures are sometimes interesting but most of them are ok. the test are based on the study guide which is really helpful.
Felt like an upper level class, not an intro class. If you are genuinely interested in art I highly recommend taking Hinojosa. His lectures are engaging but long and your hand should hurt from note taking afterwards. Do the notes, STUDY the reviews, look at the power points, and attend class and you should pass. He drops the lowest of 4 tests.
This class started off rough because you're not too sure what to expect from the first test. But after you get the study guide and his style, it's a walk in the park. There's a bit of a learning curve with his grading style but as long as you pay attention and take notes, it's easy. He likes to talk about sex in art...a lot. Haha! Great class!
Incredibly clear on material and upcoming assignments, but he takes longer to grade than he promises. Really interesting lectures. All of his extra credit assignments are movies shown after class days. If you like film and pop culture, you'll like him. If you hate snarky profs with large vocabularies, you probably won't.
im not good at history and it is alot of information to know on each exam. i dont like history since i am a science major
His class was pretty easy. I went every day and my friend didn't and she slept but she made a better grade than me at then end of the semester. Gives reviews and holds review sessions. I think I passed cause he made everything I needed to extra funny.
I enjoyed Professor Hinojosa's class a lot. I found all of the content he lectured on to be very interesting & informative. He is enthusiastic about art, so that helped me be interested in it too. I barely took any notes in his class and simply paid attention to him speaking and his lecture slides, his tests are pretty much the study guides. Easy!!
I liked professor hinojosa! Though his lectures are long they provide a lot of info and are really funny! No homework or quizzes, just 4 tests, one of which is dropped. He posts "lecture notes" which are basically a reviews for the tests, so watch out for those. It helps to read the summaries of each sections in the textbook, but I hardly used mine
Art History, the first thing I thought was "why the hell do I need to take this class?" The lectures are pretty interesting, especially the ones over the older civilizations. The later lectures I found interesting were the Modern Art ones, due to impressionists like Monet and van Gogh. Professor Hinojosa is able to make the subject very interesting
He is funny and the lectures are really entertaining, even if you're not very interested in art history. If you learn the study guides, you will get an A on the tests. Don't buy the textbook. He never uses it.
He makes this class more serious than it needs to be, if you are taking this class because you need to, i would not recommend him. i thought it was going to be a blow off or a gpa booster.
No homework, but lectures are extremely long. A lot of information to cover for each test. Expect to have your 12-20 pages review sheets out when you take notes for each test in class. If you like to learn about art and religions, this class is for you.
do not take him. makes the class way harder than needed. I thought it would be easy because I heard it was from previous art students but he doesn't understand that no one wants to be there. they are in the class because it's required. hardest test ever taken. be prepared for 20 page, detailed reviews
The class was very difficult at first, but after the first test, you tend to get a grip on how to pass the class. Hinojosa is a very passionate man when it comes to art history and it shows in his lectures. I would honestly take any course that he instructs because he is one of the best here at TXST. Study, study, study and you will do great!
I go to every class, pay attention, and study for each test a total of about 8-10 hours cause it's so much information. The tests are still insanely hard but somehow I get decent grades on them. I know he must curve them or something like that though.
Awesome professor. Go to class and you should be good. Also the study sessions are sometimes hard to go to because they are after school, but definitely try to go because they help raise your exam grades since they go over the test and essay questions!
This class is THE most boring class I have ever taken. The textbook is not mandatory AT ALL, so do not buy it. There are 4 tests, and a group project at the end of semester, and those are the only grades. No homework! Tests are very difficult, but he does provide about a 15 page review...
If you know history and you go to class its an easy class. You also watch a lot of movies and he shows movies for extra credit. Lectures are sometimes long but interesting you don't need the book I never used it. Make sure to come to class when he plays movies he will ask about them on the test. There are 4 test but the fourth is optional.
The tests were really hard but there are only 4 and he drops one. He also offers a possible 130 points on each test so it's really easy to make an A. The extra credit sessions are coming to watch a movie and their actually good movies. Would recommend.
If you go to class and study for the test you will get an A. He gives you extra credit for watching moves and more than 100 points on the tests. They also provide study sessions. If you like art then this class will be easy for you. If you try and not study and just blow it off then you wont get the A. He is really funny. lectures are great.
It's an easy "A" that requires some effort. Print the slides and write your notes on them... make sure to write down as much as you can as professor hinojosa's slides are just pictures. Print out the review and transfer your notes that you took in class on to the review. That is the easiest way to remember the material for tests.
You can tell he's passionate about Art History which I think makes him a great professor. Make sure to take notes because he's pretty detailed. Attendance is mandatory and is about 20% of your grade. Tests are mostly multiple choice with a writing section. There are also study sessions and test reviews.
Amazing lecturer, probably one of the best classes Ive taken at Texas State. Go to class and take notes, his reviews online are basically the test written out for you. Also, if you go to the review sessions, you will probably get the essay question before hand!
All it is, is 3 test, The Test are so hard! But the way he grades it, you only have to get like a 50 to get full credit, plus he gives extra credit, the best way to study is to find a cards on quizlet, show up and chill
There is never a dull moment in Professor Hinojosa's lectures. He is lively, excited, and passionate when he speaks which makes the class enjoyable/bearable. Come to class, take a lot of notes, read the book - you'll definitely get an A. Hinojosa dropped our lowest test grade which was helpful to my grade.
LOVE HIM
Great Proff. Very passionate about the material he's teaching! BEWARE- DO NOT take Hinojosa unless you're good at understanding concepts, not just facts and definitions. Exams were nearly impossible to get an A on for me because I learn by memorizing. And unless you really like Art Hist...,do not take more than a 50-min lecture (Trust me!)
I had such a hard time with this class. His lectures are roughly 70 minutes long and the lecture material is alot. The book is not needed for this class so don't buy it. The review packet he provides is helpful, but you have to constantly re-read it and look over the picture slides. There are a mixture of people who got As and some who struggled.
By far the BEST professor I had this semester. Hinojosa really knows art history, made me want to come & listen to him lecture. He inspired me to care more about art. This class was not easy to me. I would print off the slides before lecture and take notes on them to get good grades on tests. In all, he gives you plenty of extra credit to succeed.
He's a great teacher, don't buy the book because everything that's on the test he says in class so the book don't help. He gives a LOT OF EXTRA CREDIT!!! Take this man,if you miss a couple of days meet a friend
Lectures are long but interesting mostly. Tests are rather long but if you go to the study sessions they are easy. Four tests including the final, lowest is dropped. The reviews are ungodly long but not necessary.
He loves what he teaches and makes you want to love it too most of the time. However, his lectures are long, boring and uneventful. His tests are extremely hard, 60 multiple choice and an essay (You get 5 picture options from the unit to write about but you do not know in advance which ones he will pick so it is a guessing game).
He makes Art History very interesting because he describes history as if it took place in modern times. He has a study guide and give extra credit points for every test so you don't even need the book. The professor himself is horrible at replying to emails and can be rude sometimes. You will not be able to leave early. Overall, very easy.
honestly he's such a great professor. if you study his power points and attend the review sessions you should do good on the tests, plus he offers a loooot of extra credit so an a is super easy, but the tests can be challenging.
PowerPoints are just pictures so you have to listen to what hes saying, theres 3 critical reviews you have to do, and you get a study guide but its super long
You dont have to worry about memorizing dates and bs.. he rather you understand the pieces and the culture and way of thinking. When you listen to his lectures you feel like you're learning. Not to mention how hilarious he is and adding stories and anecdotes related to the history/culture.
Strict occasionally but overall a bad ass teacher with clear exam guidelines. I'd take him again.
He is an amazing professor. Not the kind to get attached to student but can be clearly seen that he loves what he does. His class is lecture heavy so get ready to take so many notes. At first you won't know what to take notes of since he project a art piece, the painter and a date then talks about it . Good overall . Easy A
Print out his exam reviews and use them as an outline to follow the lectures and take notes. Extra credit opportunities left and right. Final is optional. Great lecturer. Cares about the students. He wants everyone to make a B or better and will work with you individually to make it happen--- even in a class of 200+ students. He's a real one.
He's lectures are long, but he's hilarious & loves what he teaches. Only 3 exams, & optional final. 3 critical reviews, easy. You have to write good & detailed notes during the lectures if you want to pass the exams. He offers 8 opportunities for extra credit, TAKE ADVANTAGE. overall, interesting class & he makes you work for it. do the reviews!!!!
He was alright to me. I just felt like he was sort of rude & stuck up. He is passionate about what he teaches, & that can be a good thing, sometimes. But he's too much, he'll cuss at you if you so much as say "what did he say?" to the person next to you. He just wasn't right, & he knew it. I'd take him just to fulfill the credit. He ain't all that.
Boring material, but he makes it very interesting. He's passionate, and funny. Tests aren't too difficult. Some people barely came to class and still passed the tests. Has many extra credit opportunities!
You definitely need to come to class. He uploads his lecture slides (which are all pictures) but he removes the important terms that you need to know. The book isn't really that helpful. He does not allow you to use laptops to take notes so I'd recommend printing the slides with room for notes. Also he assigns seats and takes attendance with it.
I thought this class would be boring but I actually loved it! He makes the lectures really interesting and hes super funny! Go to the review sessions and study your notes FROM CLASS, thats where he gets his test questions from. Dont buy the book you dont need it
Amazing class. Art isnt exciting but he definitely make it so. Attending and taking notes is a must if you want to pass. But most importantly just pay attention, he makes is memorable. Virtually zéro homework. Plenty of extra credit. Many students make over 100 on test.
Super easy class and he makes it a lot of fun! If you didnt care about art history before, maybe hell change your mind! He could sometimes be a little pretentious, but overall really cool!
Dr. Hinojosa was amazing. He has awesome lectures and teaches you a totally new perspective and gives you a new appreciation for art. Beware though, his class is not easy. The tests are pretty difficult but he gives you tons of extra credit. Also, attendance is mandatory and if you don't attend you won't do well on the tests. 10/10 recommend.
Prof Hinojosa is very passionate about his teaching. He knows a lot about art history and his knowledge is profound as he has visited and knows about many historically significant places. Better attend class to pass tests. He had great test reviews available on his website that I used as notes during lecture.
Gives good lectures. Uses a lot of fancy vocabulary during lectures, and in test questions. It is absolutely unnecessary. There are only four tests, but he drops one so that helps. The tests have a ten minute writing portion about specific works of art which can be tricky because you don't know which images he will pick.
He's hilarious and very passionate about his subject. Very knowledgeable and easy to talk to. His tests are incredibly easy if you pay close attention during lecture. If you don't go you won't pass. He offers a ton of extra credit and 3 tests (the 4th is optional if you are happy with your grade)
Obviously very passionate about Art History so he puts a lot of time into making lecture interesting. Gives lots of opportunities for extra credit, some of which also double as exam review. Makes it easy for students to do well in the course if they show up and pay attention and take notes.
Very intelligent and articulate professor. Try and sit closer to the front, that's a trick in getting an A.
Mr. Hinojosa is a great professor, he gives a lot of opportunities for extra credit. He is very passionate about art and it comes out in his lectures. His TAs usually grade the tests and writings that are done in class, so the grading is based on them. The tests are from his lectures and he does do reviews (TAs review) which helps a lot.
Lectures are great! Interactive, funny, informative. Answers any questions you have. Is knowledgeable and passionate about what he teaches. Easily one of my favorite classes! Show up for class, take good notes (concepts & meanings over memorizing details about art), study the review, & youre golden! Easy A. Gives lots of extra credit.
I loved taking this class. The lectures were engaging and covered all the needed information for the exams. Attendance is pretty necessary to do well, because all information is addressed in lecture format, and other than dates and location, there is no information about the pieces on the slideshow. Also there are tons of extra credit opportunities
AMAZING! I had previously failed this class with a different professor and was retaking the course to replace the grade. He was so excited about his subject matter and made the content fun to learn! HIGHLY recommended.
His lectures are interesting and engaging. However, if you miss a day, you can just read the book chapter and you'll be caught up on lectures! He only assigns one short write up for the semester, which is painless. His class is easy, but like any class you have to study and put in work.
He does give extra Credit but it's extremely inconvienent. He asks you to drive to Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and the movie extra credits are 3 hours long after his classes at 6:30 and I had a class at that time. I also work weekends so no. It's an issue because of he's exams! They're close to 100 Q + Essay Q very specific on dates and names.
Easiest class ever if you pay attention! he gives out extra credit so go to them because they can be up to 10 points! The tests are pretty easy if you study the reviews he gives and study the pictures of art and the dates because you do have to write about them!
4 tests but drops the lowest one (or if youre happy w your grade after 3 you dont have to take the last one). You have to do a few short answers to a museum/recital visit that you have to attend. Gives so much extra credit I ended up with over 100 on all 3 tests. His photos are from around the world and hes in the photos witch is cool too.
Very passionate about what he teaches, but he rambled on a lot and I was never sure what I was actually supposed to know from the lectures. Gave extra credit points on exams in the form of films outside of class and field trips on weekends. No exam reviews, just exam "outlines" that are 20 pages long. Get ready to study nonstop.
HONEST REVIEW! He is a great professor and is really passionate. No talking or cell phone usage during class. He gives ALOT of extra credit (films/field trips), no matter how far, GO! It saved my grade. I got a C on all exams and his extra credit bumped me up and im leaving w an A! Attendance matters, dont miss! Difficult test but try your best!
lecture heavy, takes course very serious, test are very hard, offers extra credit for traveling to museums and movies, attendance is 5% of your grade, textbook is optional
Very cool and captivating lecturer. Super charismatic and passionate about teaching art history. Tests are pretty easy, but highly highly recommend showing up as much as you can bc its very easy to get behind. He makes it worth going tho. No textbook needed unless you need extra help. Overall pretty easy course with him
Honestly, I didn't pay much attention throughout the semester, due to my lack of interest in art. Hinojosa is still one of my most respected professors I've taken at Texas State. He exemplifies true passion when he teaches & appears very down to earth and has a good sense of humor. Would have given him a 5 star but I got a B, so sorry bro.
Get ready to take notes and sit attentively in his class. His tests are incredibly hard but doable. I had tough time, but made an A after one extra credit and studying a week before exams. If you get a bad grade on the first exam, go talk to him and get your ass to read/memorize the entire REVIEW before exam. Good Lick, he is a nice guy in general.
Only giving him a 2 bc he is passionate about what he teaches. His exams are impossible to pass no matter how hard you study. Exams are almost nothing like his exam outlines, which range from 12-19 pages long. Supposed to be a blow off class, but it's not with him. If you miss one day, grade effected. No phones allowed or counted absent. Goodluck.
I'm very split on this professor. As a person, this guy is clearly knowledgeable and his lectures can be engaging. However, tests are so difficult, even his massive study guides still won't prepare you for how tedious they are. The extra credit field trips can save your grade, but if you can't make it like I often couldn't, you're out of luck.
I hated this class at first. The first exam was awful and I didn't know how or what to study. After trial and error, i finally realized how i was supposed to take notes. All the TA's do is take attendance. If you are on your phone, sleeping, or simply not paying attention, you will get counted absent. Grades take forever to get in. good luck
Art is hardest intro fine arts but you learn a lot. Miss class miss lots of material. Grades are based on attendance, exams, and 3 critical reviews (go to museums, etc). Hinojosa is very passionate and as the semester goes on your grades seem to get better. He drops lowest exam grade out of 4. Offers extra credit by field trips & movies (show up)
For every single exam (3 total) I just crammed the study guide the day of and I've gotten over a 90 on all of them so I don't really get how people say the tests are hard. They are definitely tedious and intimidating though. Hinojosa has a genuine love of art and would throw jokes or stories into his lectures so I recommend him.
Hinojosa is super funny and really enjoys the things he discusses in class. I failed the first test we took, but then started attending study sessions and got 100s on the following tests! There's a chance for you to earn extra credit. He requires the textbook, but I never used it. You must attend class or you won't pass.
I started off thinking that I was going to fail this class because I failed the first exam. And then I started paying more attention and looking over the reviews he posted and made A's on the next three exams. Professor Hinojosa is highly passionate about what he lectures about. You do NOT need the textbook so don't waste your money.
I took him for a 6 week summer Intro to Visual Arts class. His lectures were amazing, and as long as you follow along in the textbook and in his power points and take notes at the same time... you'll be great! It was a lot of memorization, so if that's your thing.. take him. Only graded off of 4 tests and 1 paper. Easy A
This class can be tough, but in my opinion his lectures were interesting because hes quite passionate about art. My advice is to look up quizlets from past students.. All I did was listen in class and study stuff I found online and I passed the class with a 100! I really didnt stress that much but just make sure you study the quizlets!!
Only grades are the exams. He posts all the study guides at the beginning of the semester, I would start studying for about 1.5 weeks in advance. Buy the textbook! Go to TA study sessions. GO TO CLASS- He covers so much in one day you'll be lost. Field trips for EC helps a lot. Drops lowest test. He is an amazing teacher & wants to see you succeed.
This is a REAL and HONEST review. I am a prelaw major so I am used to hardwork, but this class is worst than my law classes. 10/10 hardest class and professor. If you fall asleep or look like youre sleeping he counts you absent. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY. His tests are the most difficult thing I have ever taken in my entire life. Would not take again
Attendance is mandatory but you get used to it, he just wants to see his students succeed. GO TO THE TA TEST REVIEW SESSIONS! First test, I did not open my notes AT ALL but I went to the review session, ended up getting a 91 on my test (including extra credit). If you just need that fine arts credit like I did, then he is the only good teacher
Such a good lecturer. Would take him again if I could. Make sure to take notes during lecture, as anything could be on the test. First part of test is written, second is multiple choice. Does offer extra credit, but might have to travel somewhere for it. Overall easy class.
I thought this class would be so hard but it's not. The professor is so great. To get an A, go to the TA test reviews and take notes and pay attention! Try not to miss class because he covers a lot of information. But i got A's on all the tests by literally my notes and going to reviews. But this professor is so passionate and has great lectures!
Honestly he was fine when I took him (like a year ago). I hated him while I was taking it. He was a good guy. If I had a change to take this class without any pressure to perform well in tests, I would have enjoyed it more. Those movies were also good and his office is amazingly decorated. I would take him again just to sit in his office and chat..
He is definitely a great public speaker, he tells amazing stories imbedded into his art lectures which made the whole thing more interesting than just simply analyzing it. He truly pushed us to find deeper meanings in everything we did with the critical reviews where we had to go to art outside of class and analyze it for a (easy) grade.
Mr. Hinojosa made a general requirement course very enjoyable. Really cares about what he's teaching but doesn't force that on his students. Top tier lecturer and I enjoyed his storytelling. Pay attention for class time and you'll be golden. There is a requirement to visit art venues yourself which is annoying but all in all a very enjoyable class.
Didn't buy the textbook, didn't fill out any of the 20-page test reviews, missed class 3 to 4 times, finished with a B. If you want to pass the class, do these three things 1.) Join the class groupme, kahoots are identical to about half of the test. 2.) Don't miss more than 3-4 times 3.) Search up quizlet over same chapter with prof name on it
Mr. Hinjosa is very passionate about his class. He knows what he is talking about and that makes it easier to understand the material. Graded by only the tests. Very easy class if you pay attention and take noes.
Professor Hinojosa is so passionate about what he teaches and makes lecture interesting and fun to listen to. He cares about the students and gives opportunities for them to do well in his class.
MOST FUNNY PROFESSOR I HAVE HAD THUS FAR AT TXST. his lectures are so good and its soooo easy to make an A, i finished with a 100.
It was all lectures, but he would add in so many pop culture references that made the class so enjoyable.
Super easy hybrid class! He has very short and straightforward tests that have extra credit questions on them. Only have four tests and three assignments for the class that are all easy. It's super easy to make an A and I highly recommend him.
He was an AMAZING prof! He really does care and his lectures are very entertaining and he really made me enjoy learning about art (which I had no interest in learning). Test are based off of his lectures, no need for the book. Everything you need to know is through his lectures. You do write critical reviews too. HE IS AMAZING!!!
Prof Hinojosa was probably the only reason why taking Intro to Fine Arts wasn't such a burden. The class being three hours long took its toll on me, IDK if that was a temporary thing but still he made the best out of the bad situation called COVID pandemic. Make sure you really attend test review sessions! They are SUPER useful!
Easy class if you pay attention lol. He is pretty funny and easy to listen to. I usually get bored during lecture but he keeps you on your toes
Largely lecture based, you need to be able to remember images(artworks) and their meaning/attributes. Hes nice and chill. 3 or 4 exams and 3 short essays (only about a page long).
Prof. Hinojosa's lectures show how passionate he is about art history. His passion helps the course move smoothly. He understood that this semester is different, so he only assigned very little work. The exams came with reference slides, so the exams were not hard at all. This course was way easier than I expected. I recommend this professor!
He is the best art history professor I have ever had or could hope to have. I have taken every art history class that I could with him because he is so passionate about what he is teaching that it made me care about what he was saying. He also has fun field trips to art museums and gives you extra credit for it. Would recommended!
Very smart guy. Very easy class. He drops the lowest exam grade. 75% is graded by exam. 10% for attendance. The rest is writing reviews over art pieces (you must write 3 reviews over the class period). His exam study reviews is very good.
this is not an easy pass, if you're only taking this for credit do not take it unless you're an art major or something. Rambles during lectures
While his lectures were long, I still learned something unique about each art piece. Sometimes you won't even notice he is telling a funny story until you really pay attention. He is flexiable and his exams were extremely short, plus he records his lectures on zoom. He doesn't respond to the chat box though, his TA does that.
His lectures are long but he makes it interesting and is a really good teacher. His exams went over everything he taught in his lectures and were not difficult as long as you studied his lecture notes.
I didn't think I would enjoy an art history class as much as I have, but Professor Hinojosa loves what he teaches and it shows. The class is lecture heavy and is graded mostly off of exams (which are really short). If you go to class/ pay attention your grade will take care of itself, its not hard to make an A as long as you're making the effort.
Because of the pandemic, he tried to make projects as accessible as possible, but it was still extremely difficult since attendance to art events was mandatory, online or not. He's genuinely passionate about his teaching and content and even taught while he had Covid-19 from his house. He's a cool person, but be ready for those daunting projects.
Please I am begging you not to take this class. I have never hated any class more. Take it anywhere else. The professor is obnoxiously talkative and most of what he says will NOT be on the test. It is so bad that the TA has to go over everything in a condensed manner so that you can actually know what you need to know for the test.
Treat his lectures like a Netflix documentary. Go, no need to take notes, just PAY attention, be present in the moment, if you skip the lectures you will not pass the test. His test questions are always over stuff he talked about in class. Also attend his TA's test preps. All the answers to the test questions will be in that prep presentation.
He's not a hard grader, just wants to ensure that you are understanding whats being taught and have your own input/opinions that are based around whats being taught. 4 Exams over lecture material, 4 short essays, and extra credit PLUS he drops your lowest test grade. Highly recommend Professor Hinojosa.
Overall, Hinojosa is an amazing professor. He really wants his students to pass and succeed in his class. He offers a few extra credit opportunities that really help boost your grade. He also drops your lowest grade at the end of the semester. While his class is lecture heavy, he goes over all the material you need to know for the test.
I mainly just had to watch and take notes over the exam reviews the TA hosted for every exam, and just skipped out on lecture. Super easy just make sure you have some kind of notes for tests
I absolutely love Esteban. He makes class interesting and he's an excellent lecturer. Just make sure you show up and take good notes because everything you need is in the lectures. There is a textbook, but I didn't need to dip into it too much.
He is such a great professor!!! I absolutely love his lectures, hes such an amazing professor.
hes a very educated man you can tell hes very passionate about art. hes traveled literally everywhere and seen everything. hes witty and charming and lowkey hot. definitely show up to class and take good notes because thats what youll need for his tests.
His class is not hard if you actually go to class. I went to class everyday, and did pretty okay on the exams and got a B. His class is lecture heavy, he posts the slides from lecture but they're only pictures (that's why it's important to go to class.) Most of his grades come from exams and a small portion from reviewing different artwork.
Amazing professor! You can tell he really loves what he's teaching, and his lectures are so interesting. Tests are a piece of cake if you study and he offers extra credit on every test. Class meetings are always lectures and assignments are done outside of class. Very easy overall, I would take his class again in the future.
One of the best professors I've ever had. He truly loves what he teaches and makes sure the material is clear. He is funny and wants everyone to do well. My only criticism - there is a LOT of information that is not on the exams. They are easy if you pay attention, but definitely attend his TA's test prep sessions to help condense test material.
Prof. H is very theatric with his lectures which makes it interesting. If you're interested in history or different religions, you'll like this class. You're required to go to museums/performances, etc. 3 times during the class for a grade. The tests weren't hard for me, but I was interested in the information being taught, so I remembered it.
Very charismatic and animated lecturer. I enjoyed his class although I was not even interested in art history. There were three performance reviews (easy). Textbook is really not needed (also in the library). Just make sure you take detailed notes during lecture (of everything) b/c you can use them for the exams.
Great professor! To me art is a little difficult to understand/interpret and he made it so easy to understand with his funny and interesting stories. Not many grades so tests and critical reviews are graded pretty heavy. If you just listen/take notes (show up) and you will pass.
He is an okay professor. This isn't a personal thing, but I did find this class to be difficult and I'm usually good in history. Even though the exams are open book, the answers on the exam are very different from the review.
Attendance is apart of your grade, if you miss a day of lecture you'll most likely be behind but he did post slides before exams. Take good notes for the exams and pay attention during the lectures if you want a decent grade
He's passionate about what he teaches and his lectures are interesting. His tests are taken DIRECTLY from lectures. You are only graded on tests and three critical art reviews; the reviews are easy to complete and he is clear on what he expects. The TA is also very helpful and hosts zoom study sessions for each test.
He is very passionate, but rambles during his lecture with terminology and context that students of an intro class aren’t familiar with. Aka he talks the WHOLE class period about stuff half the students can’t even keep up with. Tests aren’t open note, and are very hard. Attendance is required.
He is so intelligent and great at lecturing. However, it is hard to know what to take notes on which makes tests harder.
One of the best professors Ive ever had and I enjoyed every class. His lectures are very interesting and you need to be paying attention in class and taking notes to do well on exams. I genuinely left every class feeling like I actually learned something (and I did). Drops lowest test score and offers extra credit.
Amazing professor! Definitely not a class you can skip due to all the notes, but he's hilarious and makes art history super fun. If you take notes in class then you'll do good on the test. He tell stories about all these places he's been and the artifacts he's seen, so he actually knows and enjoys what he's teaching. 11/10 professor!
Esteban was a great lecturer. He's very intellectual, and a fantastic storyteller. He commonly tells events in the form of a story with comedic dialogue, which is a great way of keeping attention. He only assigns tests that are easy, but only if you are present in his class. I hope to have him again when I take Art History 2.
I hate history but he made it fun and interesting. He offers lots of extra credit so it was an easy A for me. Attendance is mandatory which is annoying but it wasnt his choice, its a department thing. You also wont be able to use your phone or laptop, or youll be counted absent.
He cares alot about the material he teaches and is actually a really good proffessor, i just found his class kind of boring considering i don't care about art too much. Attendance is 20% of your grade and the tests make up the rest of it
Going into this class, I was not knowledgeable about art history & honestly was dreading having to take this class. However, the professor loves his job & has spent his life learning & visiting most of the art pieces we learn about in class. Even though tests are in person, the study guides, review videos and extra credit should help get you an A!
His class is very interesting and his lectures were awesome. He has spent a lot of his life traveling the world so he knows almost everything he talks about in his lectures. Take him!!!
He is very passionate about what he teaches. The class is easy for the most part, I failed 3 out of the 4 test and I still passed the class. Would've made a B in his class if I didn't miss 3 days so its very important that you attend class. You can go to a museum for extra credit and theirs a design project which was fun to do and it was an easy A.
Easy class. Attendance is really important. Drops lowest exam grade. Easy tests if you pay attention and take note in class!! Only one project but super easy. Really cares about the content and the students. Overall an amazing professor
(Fall 2021) Professor Hinojosa was very passionate about his lectures. I went into the class with little knowledge about the History of Art and his lectures made me invested. His student aides were amazing as well and I think made his class even easier with their reviews before exams. Responds to emails timely.
I loved him, he kept me entertained during lectures and seemed to care about having us all pass. If you aren't into art you may not have as much fun though.
I could understand how this class could be hard for some people, but my experience with him has been amazing. Curved one of my tests up to 12 points, and did that for lots of other people. If you do the work, you will be rewarded for sure. There are also critical reviews which are not that hard. Go to class!! And be prepared to take notes.
Really fun and engaging professor; however, the attendance rules are insane. 6 absences are enough grounds to fail the class, which is a little crazy. He is an entertaining lecturer, but his presentations have very few words, so if you have a disability that doesn't allow you to hear very well, you will need a notetaker.
He is clearly knows what he is talking about. He lectures for the whole time and has assigned seats. Online exams though and never had to read the required book, don't buy the book you wont need it. Just go to class and take notes and you'll pass
Lectures are very fast paced so there are few opportunities for questions, but when possible he's happy to answer and often thanks the student who asked. He sometimes goes on tangents which makes it difficult to tell what needs to be written down and what doesn't. Several extra credit opportunities through field trips.
professor talks fast and seems extremely interested in what he is teaching so its never boring to listen to his lectures. He offers extra credit, and you don't need the textbook if you read his chapter summaries. Exams are open note, and very straightforward. Attendance is mandatory but he talks about everything covered on exams so its good to go.
Hinojosa is a great lecturer. If you just do the test reviews before the tests (which are online) you should be more than fine grade wise. Genuinely enjoy his lectures but it's extremely difficult to take good notes, then again you don't really need notes so just sit back and enjoy the course.
He is a great professor, and is so knowledgable its almost mind-blowing. There were only 5 assignments that made up your total grade so you have to put in the effort for each exam/project. He provides lot of extra credit opportunities as well. Also you will not pass if you dont attend class, it is 20% of your grade and he is strict.
Very interesting to listen to & provides strong background to every piece. Very against technology in class and keeps you until the very end.
His history class felt like being told a story of the world. He was fun to listen to and very interactive. Hates any technology in class unless used to take notes will be counted absent for it. But all tests are online and very few grades throughout the whole semester I think I had 2 and like 3 tests. Will be taking his other classes!
Absolutely LOVED this class and the professor. This is what I look for in all my teachers. He was communicative, kind, and interesting. I learned so much from him. His lecture style is amazing. I literally have no negative things to say. I cannot recommend this professor enough. Spots for his classes do fill up fast, beware!
Attendance is mandatory and for good reason because everything on the test is said during lecture. Plenty of extra credit opportunities for field trips and bonus questions. He makes it easy to pass the class as long as your present physically and mentally. Super engaging lectures, he definitely knows his stuff. I learned a lot. 10/10!!!
Easiest class I've ever taken, and the best professor I've ever had. His passion for the subject really shines through and makes you interested in the material. I've gained a lot from this class and would happily retake it. Professor Hinojosa is the best.
This professor is amazing. I hate history, and yet he manages to make it interesting. Some of the best lectures I've ever experienced. It's clear he has such a passion for this course, and he shows pictures of him visiting many of the places/artworks he shows us in class. Funny guy, but attend class as that's where your info for exams comes from.
A wonderful professor, really got me interested in history- which I never had been before. Engaging, thoughtful and inspiring, easily shows his care about art and art history. Four tests and a semester long project, but both are easy if you pay attention and take notes.
This is a great professor. The only thing I would tell you to do is show up to class and take notes!!! He performs his lectures in slides with pictures. Everything he says will be on the test so make sure you show up to class and listen!! He is not too strict on attendece but he does not mind marking you absent and not excusing it so just show up.
Took his class last fall, loved it. Take notes!! He moves quick sometimes, so I'd either download the slides beforehand or hope you're good at note taking. He's got a great lecture style. Don't be afraid to ask questions and show up to class!
This professor is lecture heavy, his lectures are extremely boring and I found myself constantly dozing off. He also has a short temper especially about headphones, when he sees them he literally YELLS. His tests are easy tho and his TA gives goodreviews. His attendance policies are ridiculous though, if u miss 1 day its -5 points, 2 days -10 etc.
Professor Hinojosa's lectures are engaging and insightful. He strongly emphasizes attendance, but the workload is manageable. Tools like unstuckstudy helped me stay on top of the material.
You can't even have a snack in here, cant nap , he expects you to take notes but also yells for being on any type of device . He is very strict , also half the things he teaches in class is not on the exams , they are confusing .DONT RECOMMEND TAKING HIM.
Some main takeaways about this professor is that you need to attend class in order to do well on the exams. You really don't need to do anything else homework-wise except having to go to a museum and reflecting off it. His lectures are super engaging and fun if you're interested in learning history! He really knows what he's talking about.
The class overall is easy. All test are online. He however is awful. He is really strict, no technology is allowed, and will interrupt his own class to call students out for technology, leaving early, or speaking. Overall a really boring class.
Take his class! Esteban Hinojosa is a funny and great professor. Tests are on Canvas, and passing just requires decent notes on the art he covers. He lectures until the end of class, attendance is mandatory, don't leave early. The TA is excellent with helpful review videos for the test. The final is optional, he drops the lowest test score. Got A+.
The professor is fine but the class policy is so bs that I would just recommend picking another class instead. No laptop unless you're disabled, completely disregard of individual learning process. Excused absences have to be through Deans and proofs are needed. Sounds fine on paper until you have a situation that you just can't show proof for??
Professor Hinojosa was an expert in his field, clearly passionate, and very entertaining. There is a no phone/laptop policy, but if you don't mind that I heavily recc taking him. Assignments are easy, tests are easy, so its definitely not a challenging course. Also in general his lectures were my favorite all semester long.
The professor is really passionate about art. The tests are super easy, and the course consists only of tests and one critical review. The only thing to keep in mind is that attendance is mandatory and very strict. As long as you show up to class, you will do great in this course.
Best professor I've ever had! If you're considering taking him next semester, do it and hurry! His classes fill up quick. This was my second time taking him, and I'm taking him again next semester. He is extremely engaging and very passionate about his work. Not to mention hilarious. I'll go to lecture, not take notes, and pass every exam. TAKE HIM
In the nicest way possible, the people who say not to take this professor are probably bums who never pay attention in their classes. This prof is extremely easy if you pay attention, which IS NOT HARD. He is the most entertaining professor ever, and always sticks to lecture. While he doesn't allow tech, that shouldn't affect your note taking.
Very Lecture heavy, attendance is mandatory, he likes legos and star wars and that's cool. Hes really possionate about what he does, just take notes and listen and youll be fine. All test are online at home
Amazing professor, his lectures are so interesting and he was always open to discussing questions with the class. You can tell he really cares about art and what he is teaching. There's a museum visit requirement you must meet and there are exams but the TA includes a study guide and it's done on canvas. He also drops the lowest exam grade.
This was one of my favorite classes ever! Listening to lectures were like listening to a fun story time. As long as you take notes, this class is easy as cake. Literally only one easy assignment and three easy tests.
Your grade is literally tests (one gets dropped), a group project, one small assignment and ATTENDANCE that's it. go to class or u will fail, don't get on your phone or talk or he will yell at you. the easiest class ive ever taken tho. test are taken at home and able to use your resources.
Professor is fine, but spent wayyyy too long discussing Greek and Roman art versus other cultures, like Hindu and Polynesian art, which were sidelined into one class period or less. You can tell he's passionate about Greco-Roman art, but in a world art history class, I'd expect to spend more time discussing the entire world, not just Europe.
Great Professor. I make great effort to choose the easiest classes possible, with no attendance mandatory. His attendance is mandatory, but the class is pretty easy because there are only 3 tests and you take them at home. If you are not a depth-groveling troglodyte you will get an A. Lectures are neat, but no engagement so you may get tired.
Overall great teacher. Cannot use technology in lectures so pencil and paper are needed. Tests are not bad, and he gives extra credit for occasional field trips. (Usually 2)
Literally one of the best professors I have ever had. Be ready to write at the speed of light in this class because he goes FAST, but he's super funny. Grades just come from the test and end of semester project, which I felt sufficiently prepared for. Tests are open note so they're pretty easy and have extra credit.
Hands down the best professor ever. Esteban is so knowledgable about art history and very passionate, I didn't want this class to end. Super engaging lectures. The only homework are online, open book quizzes and one easy design project that you have the semester to work on. He is so funny and often references his Legos. Please take this course!
He would let me talk with him after class and go on my autistic rants. Loved sitting up front and asking questions. Always involved in his lecture
If you miss class more than like five times its grounds for failing. His TA wouldn't even except my doctors note to excuse me. He absolutely loves what he is teaching and knows ALOT. Lectures are very boring and hard to take notes on. No phone, computers or tablets or else the TA will count you absent. Attendance is very mandatory.
attendance is mandatory, no phones ipads or laptops, theres a seating chart, if the TA sees you on the phone you get marked absent. the tests are really easy. super easy. he is VERY passionate about waht he teaches and it is a very intersting class. lectures are long and boring but i would just sit there for attendance.
He is by far my favorite teacher this semester. His lectures are engaging and interesting as well as entertaining and he is funny too. The tests are fairly easy if you pay attention during lecture (I don't even bother taking notes), and he does guided art museum tours for extra credit. Don't be rude during the lecture as he can be scary when angry.
Hinojosa is a great lecturer. He's very passionate about what he teaches which in turn makes the lectures engaging and fun to follow. Attendance is mandatory and for a grade, but that's about the only con. Tests are easy to understand and online with extra credit.
I thought Prof. H was an amazing professor. He knew everything about every piece of artwork. Yes sitting through the entire lecture was tough sometimes, but I found his lectures interesting. All his exams are online and easy as long as you pay attention and TAKE NOTES. No other homework otherwise and final is optional.
Lectures were entertaining and the prof does a great job of keeping students engaged. Exams are online, open book, and easy. Only 1 super easy assignment (essay was only 250 words). There is a strict attendance policy and no phones or computers are allowed in lecture, but I brought paper work to do or a small craft and I had a great time.
My grandma died this morning. Went to office hours to explain to get an excused absence, he just kept repeating multiple times that I was already on campus…my grandma died just an hour and a half prior to that. Take this information with what you will. I was shown zero sympathy, genuinely think he thinks I'm lying lmao.
He's a great professor and he's super passionate about what he teaches, but his class can become boring. If you take his class make sure to take notes! Also, he doesn't allow phones, headphones or laptops.
I really liked the way he taught. To make the lectures easier to listen to, he would always act out the stories! He does offer extra credit opportunities, such as bonus questions on tests and field trips, which are about 10-15 points each. He only lets you have a pen and paper out, so no phones or laptops to take notes, so be ready and prepared!
I love his classes. Let's me ask questions and give knowledge without feeling out of place. Very fun and flows nicely
Most entertaining professor I've ever had! Doesn't do assignments and only has 4 exams including the final which is optional. Never took any notes and got A's on all of my exams just from paying attention. He makes the lectures very entertaining and definitely is very passionate about what he does.
I think professor hinojosa is a great guy and you can tell he loves what he does. Personally it was an easy class to get by with i just would get bored sometimes throughout the lecture listening about art for an hour and 20 minutes. Its an extremely easy class to pass all tests are online, just show up to class its mandatory.
I was a nursing major who knew nothing about art and loved this class! It was such good and interesting lectures. Just do not get on your computer or phone he will yell at you in front of the entire class. But other than that tests were easy.
Professor Hinojosa was an amazing teacher to have this semester as he is super passionate about art history and very entertaining. Make sure you don't fall asleep for too long or get on your phone too much cause you'll get counted absent. A little crazy to have assigned seating in a class of 200+ people. Super easy if you take notes though.
Extremely passionate about what he teaches. Fantastic at lecturing. There's two assignments, four tests, no other assignments. Just show up to class and be present. Very strict about phones, and will mark you absent if you're on your device in class. If you do well enough on all your tests, you can completely skip the final.
Easy class with only 4 (online no proctored) exams and an all semester project. He grades the project really tough but the tests are fine. No technology allowed in class and attendance mandatory.
