she cannot word the test questions. not very good
No Comments
very random lectures, she asks obscure test questions. would not reccomend! decent curves on tests though.
Questions were formulated in a confusing manner. Very broad lectures. Tests were very hard. Curve was high probably because questions were difficult to understand.Tests were timed, at 1 min per question.
She was an airhead. Always Late. Really hard tests. Never reviews for any test.
Test questions were hard to understand, she does not know how to relate to her students, lectures very random, and she was never on time.
Sitting through that class is the most painful experience ever. Cancer research scientists should not be condemned to teaching a middle school class. This class is such a waste of time and being disintereted in the material usually results in a crappy test score.
This was one of the worse classes I have ever taken. Dr. Chen sucks as a professor. If you take this class be prepared for critical thinking because her tests are extremely hard. She gives no test reviews and if she does they are not like her tests. The class itself was interesting but Dr. Chen made it a lot harder than what it should have been.
Worst teacher I have ever had. Always late to class. Made everyone fall asleep and talked in code.No test related to what the lectures were. Did not learn one thing in the class.
was not good at relating to the class, her lectures were a bore and the test were not to clear and due to the fact the curves on the test were the highest i have ever seen up to 20pt curves that equals a not so hot teacher to me
Her tests are multi. choices but each question is so long, it might as well be an essay question because by the time you are finished reading the question, you have to start over because you already forgot the beginning. The tests are based on everything
Test are pretty hard even though they are multiple choice. She goes over too much detail. Lectures are pretty boring. I had to retake this class and now I have Dr. Jaynes. He's awesome. He doesn't go into anywhere near the detail! Oh, and I'm making an A!
This woman literally runs all along the board just to teach you every single word in the book. No general concepts, she wants you to memorize, and then you get to the exam and you have no clue what to do. Labs are very unclear. Avoid. Take Dirnberger. He's wonderful!
Is a nice person, but I need the grade and to get it we need to be taught. She missed an entire week of school and the sub teaches completely wrong material yet even when the class tells her this, she still has the test upon her return the following week. Needless to say, the highest grade was an 85 so she scale that grade to 90 bringing up everyone's grade up that many points.****!
her tests are horrible. I don't know where she gets the questions from. She is very scatterbrained, she moves from subject to subject too quickly. Don't take her
The class is boring. She goes over too many stuff in details and test on something different. A lot of student failed her class. I bearly passed the class and i'm also glad i don't have to take it again. Word of advise *** Avoid her class****.
Very unclear teaching. Doesn't elaborate or give examples.
I had such a great genetics profeesor. I was really looking forward to Med. Genetics but she ruined the experience. She tries to cram all this information and then the tests are something else. She sucks. She cannot answer questions.
I was looking foward to taking this class, but she kept me from enjoying it. Class is very boring, she is very scatterbrained, and lecture is often hard to follow because she jumps around all over the place. The tests, however, were much easier than I expected. Try to follow her in class, take good notes, and study more than the night before test.
Very good teacher. I loved the class, and she taught it very well. Tests come from her lectures & slides, not from the text. Just make sure you go to class and you'll do fine.
Dr. Chen is very sweet, and a pretty good teacher. She is disorganized, which gets in the way a little bit. The tests were multiple choice, and they were OKAY. Not incredibly hard. (other professors are much harder). There are lab quizzes, but they aren't bad if you read ahead. Not hard/Not a piece of cake. I would probably take her again.
Class was fun Dr. Chen is pretty cool I learned alot in her class...easy to talk too Take her
Chen was very unprepared for lecture classes. She lets you out early half of the time bc she is unprepared and has nothing further to do. She suggests coming to her office for extra help, but was of no help. She gives no extra credit. If you are a bio major, steer clear of her. Not helpful at all. Tests are ridiculous!
STAY CLEAR!!!!!This teacher is an airhead she comes to class unprepared and jumps from subject to subject. She says if you have any questions you can come to her office but when you ask her a question she goes on talking about things not pertaining to the question you asked. she gives no extra credit or curve your grade at the end of the semester.
If you pay attention and are willing to participate she is a very engaging teacher. She does not follow a straight from the textbook approach and uses interesting examples to help explain different subject matters. She's not the most confident, but she is very familiar with the subject matter.
really easy for genetics. A bit nervous and sometimes can have a hard time explaining things in a different way (she tries to show it as many times as she can and give lots of examples but some people just aren't going to pick it up) If you need somebody to hold your hand through each step take somebody else, but if you are quick to catch go for it
Dr. Chen is a very nice person but just awful at teaching. She would often get lost in her own presentations and would sometimes put material on the exam that we had never touched on in class. Be prepared to read the text ALOT. It seemed like the people who stayed home everyday and just read chapters did better than those of us who showed up...
Avoid her if at all possible!! Her teaching style is unclear and disorganized. She'll often have material on tests that you've either never gone over in class, or in WAY more detail than was discussed. I'd suggest taking someone else!
First of all, she is extreamly smart and knows what she is teaching. However, this does not make up for the fact that she cannot convey this information to her students. She often went into detail on information that was completely random and didn't end up on tests. She did try to help students, but overall, it made for a dissappointing class.
She is very interested in the material and I learned quite a bit, but her tests are rather difficult and tricky. Most students in the class knew the material backwards and forwards, but found it difficult to pass the tests.
Her genetics class is not that hard. I bombed the final test on transcription and translation, but she replaces your lowest test grade with your grade on the final. And she curved the final. Yeah, the class is a little difficult, but overall not that bad.
Dr. Chen is helpfull, fair, nice, and very knowledgable about Genetics. Her test come 100% from the lecture material (powerpoints online though), so don't miss class or you will fail. She will work with you to pass, you just have to work hard and you will do well. Her lectures make the material very easy to understand.Great teacher will take again
I do not know her as a person, but as a professor, she is horrible. I did not learn anything in class, & the class is more boring than watching an episode of Barney and friends. If you must take her, just read the books and you will be fine, but do not expect to learn anything in the class.
I loved her! She is challenging but she makes the material very interesting to learn. She is available for help and explains well. Test are multiple choice and sometimes tricky but if you study well in advance you should do well. Her lab and lab quizzes were straight forward;read lab procedure prior to lab. I would recommend her and take her again!
Do not take her at all costs!! She talks down to students and gets very defensive if you ask questions. The good comments about this professor are no way from actual students who took her. Her tests and quizes are extremely tricky. I received my first "D" from her after attending every lab and lecture. I had a 69.1 and she won't bump you up. She ha
HORRIBLE! She really does talk down to students when you try to ask for help and she gives you attitude as well. Her test are out of this world tricky and most of the time my class had to argue with her because she was always putting wrong answers on the test confusing us more. I studied my butt off for this class and got nowhere.
As a 4.0 student I can officially say that this professor is the worst I have ever had. I have made A's on all exams and am fighting for a B in the class right now. The in-class quizzes and Lab quizzes/finals were absurd. There is no direction in this class at all, and you never know what to study. DO NOT TAKE THIS LADY. AWFUL
I tutored some students who were in her class and after all the complaining I sat in her lecture just to observe. She is not bad at all, she explains clearly and goes out of her way to draw diagrams as she is teaching. All the bad reviews I've read here are probably from bad students like the ones I had to tutor.
Everyone told me not to take her and I did... thinking, "how bad could it be?" She is all over the place when she lectures. Get the book; it will help you a lot. The reviewer who "observed" her class doesn't know what they are talking about. Having to be in the class for a semester is a different experience. I received my first bad grade ever: C!
Unprofessional. Always late to class and lab. Brought final exam 30 mins late. Wears clothes WAY too small. Gives answers that contradict the book then says different books say different things. Tests were ridiculous-couldnt find text or notes to support questions. When students ask a question, she can't provide an explanation that makes sense.
A lot to read. A lot to write. She gave us 3 essays single spaced to write in one week, 3 times. She grades them like a english teacher who minored in grammar. wants you to tell her what you read and gets highly annoyed when no one says anything. The class gets really boring after the first 3 topics. The debates lasts the whole class time.
First half isn't bad simply because the material isn't hard. The second half is ridiculous. Exam questions she ask are over small details that don't actually test you on the concepts. She purposely tries to trick you and takes pride in the 60% test averages. She is scatterbrained and simply can't teach well at all. In the end, I got a B, but barely
The class isn't hard but very BORING!!! Attendance is mandatory because she knows no one would ever show up. You have to write 3 papers for each exam which is tedious and do a debate.
Dr. Chen gets a bad rep! "Gen" is a crazy hard class to begin with which probably makes it hard to teach. Of your options for a 3300 prof at KSU, She is the best! You have to attend class, pay attention, read the book, and ask questions. Tests are tricky because its a technical subject. You have to put effort into it, if u do she will help!
Professor Chen is a very intelligent woman but she is not a good professor at all. In this class you will most defintely have to teach yourself. You will also have to deal with a number of smart comments from the professor. Stay away. Far away.
She is all over the place. She is very boring, but if you actually read the book you'll be fine. Many test questions don't make sense or are worded poorly. One test had a decent average so she made the next test impossible and laughed about the low average.
Dr. Chen is a scatterbrained geneticist.. No really, she does research in mitochondrial genetics. She thinks her lectures cover everything, when clearly they only cover about 60-70% of the material. You MUST read every chapter to pass this class. She has 4 quizzes that count 8% each, 3 tests that count for 16% each, and a cumu final that is 20%.

She is really nice. Her tests questions are straight to the point. If you study you will pass
I was so nervous about her after reading these reviews but I don't understand the negative comments! Dr. Chen is a wonderful professor- she is very clear about the lab directions and will help you with any question you may have. Tests every other lab class, but if you study you should do okay! She is very knowledgable and funny as well! Take her!!
She was super laid back and knowledgeable. She knew what she was talking about! The only thing I don't like about her is she expected you to know the material. Also the lab tests were about 5-8 questions. Because of this there isn't much room for mistakes. I loved her as a person, but not as a professor. STUDY for the lab tests!
She's not bad! You will have to make the effort to pass on your end. Participate in class, get her to know your name, and actually study for the lab exams. Dr. Vogelien makes the exams, they're from the study objectives at the end of every lab. Dr. Chen expects you to know this material when coming in to lab, so read it or she'll give pop quizzes.
Bioethics was a really awesome class. We got a chance to learn about a lot of really controversial material. There are journal entries due weekly, two long essay tests, and one debate. That's all the grades you'll have. Lecture is open discussion and participation counts!! Honestly a really good class and I would recommend it for an easy elective.
Dr. Chen was very sweet but meant business with her reading assignments. The lectures are basically held by the students with discussions on what we were supposed to read before class. Start your essay tests the day she posts them, DO NOT wait till the last minute to start. About 15 journal assignments, 2 tests, 1 debate, and participation counts.
So it's Genetics lab so it can't be hard right... No. I'm doing well in the lecture, and this lady makes her lab tests so hard just to spite us. Why would you put trick questions on a lab exam? Why make a lab harder than it should be? I'll never know. Take somebody else if you can. If not, prepare to study.... for a one credit hour lab...
Hardest lab I've ever taken. One time she was upset that we all couldn't understand the lab so everyone just signed out, but it's because she isn't very good at explaining things. She should have tried to make sure we understood the material, but instead she made the next exam extremely hard.
You must participate at least 3-4 times during the semester, and she gets annoyed if most of the class isn't. Group project is debate. Readings are extremely long and boring. She posts them on D2L. Journals to do from the readings as homework. Must write two essays per exam. Attendance is mandatory; -5 points/class missed. Lenient on due dates.
Here's the thing- genetics is a hard course. It requires dedication, as does any upper level science class. Dr. Chen was very sweet, wanted her students to succeed, and made herself accessible during the lab. Obviously it's lab, so don't skip. Is very clear on what she wants and is a very fair grader. I failed Spring 16 but not because of her!
Dr. Chen was great. It's a very straightforward class. All you literally have to do is write a quick journal before class and make a few comments during the discussion and you're pretty much set. Plus, she's really funny and pretty laid back.
For a 1 credit hour course, she makes this extremely difficult for Lab. This is her 2nd job, she does not seem to care and shows very little to almost no passion into teaching this course. Test are hard, reviewing the manual and practice problems is not enough to prepare you for the lab assessments. WORST LAB INSTRUCTOR EVER! AVOID HER AT ALL COST!
She's a really nice person, but her lab tests are just too hard! A lab should not be this hard. You miss two questions on the test and you're at a B. Made an A in the lecture but a B in the lab. 5 tests and an optional final. Grade is 90% tests 10% lab checkouts.
Dr. Chen in Lab is the worst professor. She would do "pre-lab explanations" but tell us the wrong things. Only graded by her lab tests but 10% attendance grade does help at the end. Final is optional but you're gonna need to take it if you have her for lab. Worst class. Reports aren't graded or the main focus of tests so basically irrelevant.
Genetics is a difficult subject. Her lab is graded by a lab quiz for each lab. The quizzes you will have to study for. I recommend working through the practice problems she posts. But, she's very kind and wants to help as much as possible. The labs themselves aren't too difficult.
Professor Chen is really nice but her lab tests are so difficult. Make sure you take the class and the lab together because it was so difficult for me when I took the lab because I took a the class a semester prior. MAKE SURE YOU STUDY!
Dr. Chen is really nice. There are 5 lab tests and each are worth 17% and there is a cumulative final, but one of the six tests is dropped. If you just pay full attention to the labs, the tests are easy.
Dr. Chen is nice and class is fine but shes hard to reach out of class and takes years to grade. Bioethics is a debate class based on participation. Its interesting but you have to read 2-3 long 10-30 pg boring excerpts before class and write a detailed journal entry. Exams are 1 group debate and 2 exams with 2 made of 2 essays. I got an A
Dr. Chen's ratings really don't reflect how she is. Most of them are people hating on the class, not on her. Genetics is a difficult subject, and the lab is no different. Put in the effort, and an A is doable. Actually do the labs, even though they aren't for a grade. An A will require effort, but a B shouldn't be too difficult.
Genetics lecture is going to be difficult, it's the first 3000 level bio class most biology majors take, which really lets them know if they can handle the work load or not. The grade was 4 tests, and homework. She let us remake parts of tests at the end, but I wouldn't guarantee that for other semesters. Going to have to study to pass.
Chen is a nice woman who is clearly extremely smart. However she is completely lacking in her ability to teach the material. Her lectures are very brief and they hardly scratch the surface on the concepts she is going to expect you to master for her exams. Most exam questions are on material hardly mentioned in class so prepare to teach yourself.
Dr. Chen is very unprepared for the task at hand. Lectures are not her strong suit due to her lack of specificity. Teachers that take the time to really explain concepts are usually rewarded with passing-high grades from their students. Lectures are unhelpful, slides are vague, explanations are half-hearted. Know the material in and out to pass.
Genetics is a hard course, but Dr. Chen doesn't make it any easier. She's incredibly knowledgable, but her lectures are vague, and she really doesn't make her expectations clear. Even with attending lectures, reading the textbook cover to cover, and dutifully studying, her tests always present topics I don't even have a passing familiarity with.
She's very nice but a bit awkward which seeped into her lectures. She didn't always explain very clearly and tripped over her words a lot. However if you talk to her she is actually very understanding and generous. We originally had 4 tests but was changed to 5 that were weighted less to help grades.
For bioethics ONLY,she's an easy A. Any other class, she is HARD. Bioethics is not an actual "science class". You just read & discuss science. There is a LOT of reading, & your participation in class discussions is based on that reading & huge part of grade. So if you read, you can thus participate in discussions, & thus get an A. It's that simple!
I thought the lab was pretty easy overall because she simplified a lot of things to help us understand. Got a B because we went online so suddenly. I didn't take her for lecture, but the lab helped me understand some of the concepts in my lecture. Do the labs and learn to navigate the websites she has you use.
Stay far away from Dr. Chen!! She gives 9 quizzes, which are very hard!! Most of the material on her quizzes is not even covered in her lectures. She also tries to trick you!! She gives extra credit but she is tough on her grading of these too!! I worked very hard just to get a C in her class!!!! Do NOT take her for Genetics!!!
Dr. Chen is not all that bad. Her lectures are long winded and somewhat vague, but if you study the powerpoints she provides then you will likely do alright. Attendance wasnt mandatory but you should definitely attend class for your best chance at understanding material, she explains things well if you ask questions.
seriously avoid this professor at all costs Loads of reading often assigned at the last minute She will expect you to read tons of literature and then admit to not reading it herself 1-2 journal entrees due a week of which she will refuse to grade Will take points of exams and debates and will refuse to give you any reason whatsoever very arrogant
lectures are kinda awkward and uninspiring. the material is hard to learn on your own & her lectures dont teach you everything. 10 quizzes so its like every other week. I just dont like the structure of the class its exhausting while taking other hard classes. hw is sporadic and easy to miss. She is fine, its hard to find effort and time for it
Literally one of the top worst professors Ive encountered yet, its crazy how some of these professionals get PhDs etc grades ridiculously, her grades she puts in dont even match the grades given out of however many possible points (literally puts in whatever she feels) but is teaching a class on ethics.. avoid her take the other professor
Lectures were extremely boring and don't prepare you for the quizzes. I pretty much just read the textbook, and that's how I learned the material. 10 quizzes, none drop, you have the opportunity to retake 2 during finals week.
I do not know why her rating is so low. I really enjoyed her as a professor for genetics and genetics lab. There's no test, only quizzes. 10 quizzes each over 1 or 2 topics. We were able to retake two quizzes at the end of the semester. The book isn't used other than for mastering assignments. Definitely would take her again!
I'm sorry, but this class was absurd. Most grades weren't put in until the very end (random Cs for having a boring opinion), and some people didn't get grades at all until they had to ask about it. Too much work with awfully timed due dates. Attendance VERY mandatory (remember to sign that paper). Shouldn't be this hard to get an A in bioethics...
Her class is basically like being taught about apples and the assessments are about oranges. :(
She can not teach at all! She will teach content in such a boring way and makes so many mistakes. Never uses time wisely and makes us stay a few minutes past class time then the next class she gives us a quiz(more like a test) on the content. AVOID HER IF POSSIBLE!!!
She is not a bad option for genetics if you prefer a different teaching style. We had 10 quizzes (15-25 questions each) and the last quiz was during finals week and was not cumulative. You can retake up to 2 quizzes at the end of the semester. You have to go to class and be attentive in class to do well in addition to studying.
DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!! So unorganized and posts hour long lectures for us to watch before class. Always passive aggressively calling out students, even previous students. The quiz questions come out of thin air.
Any tests, including the final and midterm, were broken up across 10 quizzes. The relevant content for these including the homework was on slides that she discusses in class and draws on, so it helps if you have a copy of them to work on. The course switches from Punnett squares and pedigree analysis to some chemistry about halfway through.
Avoid her at all cost. I have never in my life struggled in any type of biology class. She has 10 quizzes that are 75% of your grade. Tries to make it seem like the quizzes are less material heavy but that is a LIE. She doesn't have any study strategies, she says we should know whats going on in HER head. Practice quizzes do not prepare you. BEWARE
I just wouldn't. There's better out there. She uses lectures from 2020 cause she's too lazy to teach us now. She can be harsh, yet understanding depending on the circumstance... ig. There's 10 quizzes(75% of your grade), that hardly touch on the content she gives in class or on practice quizzes. It's almost impossible to get a C, let alone an A...
She is understanding about your needs and concerns. Overall, a good person. However, when it comes to lecture and studying, be prepared to read the textbook and look up youtube videos. I've realized a bit later on that I needed to teach myself the material. PowerPoints were also confusing to study from. She does offer extra credit though.
It's beyond me why her score is so low. She's not the most excited lecturer or anything, but she's still good. She's nice and accessible outside of class. The 9 quizzes instead of the typical 4 test set up might not be for everyone, though. Sometimes tests are harder than she prepares you for, but she offers retakes during finals. I think shes good
Class was so hard for me and I am a “A/B” student. I don't understand why she made everything rocket science. I did very bad on the first 3 and she bragged About how people barley pass the class first day of class… I studied on my own and was passing barley with C's. I never had an issue with a professor till now.
Genuinely one of the worst professors I've ever taken. Claims we should "become experts on our own time" and just talks about what she thinks about vague subject matter. Constantly has to be corrected by students. Her "quizzes" of which there are many are the size of full tests and most of your grade. Unhelpful and arrogant. Avoid at all costs.
