GOOD : shes easy, group project easy, curve all exams grades. Not hard to pass the class. BAD: not clearly on teaching lectures, less practices for exams, Exams have 100 questions...you have to read and REMEMBER all definitions in books, if you want an A. goodluck/
If 40% final exam is your thing. Sure, go ahead. Don't get me wrong, she a nice person and a good professor but...
By far one of the worst professors I have ever took.. all she does is lecture then tells us to do exercises from the book we have no clue to do and then gives us 15 sql problems to do on the exam that half the class cant finish on time! Do yourself a favor and take someone else!
Her lectures are not very helpful and could use work. She contradicted herself a lot and was very unclear on what to expect on the tests. I think she curved a lot due to students doing poorly.
WORST ONLINE CLASS IN THE HISTORY OF HUMAN SPECIES. Not worth taking her class at all. no matter what, even if it stops you from graduating within 4 years, conflicts with your work schedule.. DON'T TAKE HER. Horrible teacher. Doesn't give extra credit, basically ask you study the entire textbook.. don't take her period.
Prepare to hate this class, Gonzalez knows the subject matter but she doesn't express it clear enough. You better be sure to read each chapter because she gives random pop quizzes for each chapter. Both midterm and final are 2 parts and really tough. I would avoid at all cost if possible.
Avoid if possible-Seemed friendly on first day but really doesn't know how to teach SQL-everything is teach yourself -course material is weighed oddly and not to your favor-Pop quizzes at the beg. of class on material not taught-final is worth 40% if you do poorly on the one and only midterm good luck passing the course - do not miss a single thing
Basically a self study class. She links Daniel Soper's youtube lectures and I just watched those. Used the book only a few times. Exam was ridiculously hard. Group work every other week even though its an online class. If you need help, go to her office hours and she's very willing to help you.
Really nice/great professor, but I think she can work on being a little more detailed in her lectures. Don't miss class or you'll either miss a group assignment or a quiz. Class is weighed 16% quiz, 14% group assign., 30% mid, 40% final. Do well on the midterm and final or else you wont pass. It was one of the most challenging classes ive ever had
Basically a self study class. Reading the book and remembering it are crucial for chapter quizzes. Taken online when class starts each time you start a new chapter. Exams are hard IF you don't read the book. Group work every other week. Choose smart people! If you need help, go to her office hours, she's sweet and very willing to help you.
Worst class ever. She will ask random sentences from a 1500 page textbook as exam questions. Like EVERY course of hers she doesn't put In effort and avoids teaching at all. Stay away from her!
Don't take online unless you already are very familiar with SQL. Worst professor I have ever taken.
I took this course online expecting, you know, "regular" online class. But NO! I've never heard of online class doing presentations... You have to meet with your teammates and submit videos of all teammates presenting... What's the point of taking an online class if I still have to schedule time to physically meet with someone from my class?
Don't get me wrong she's very nice. Gives extra credit and is more than willing to help students learn. One assignment and pop quiz every week so you need to read the chapter ahead of time. However she focuses heavily on concept rather than application and use for SQL and databases as she lectures A LOT about stuff you can read from the textbook
Took the online course and she did nothing but post YouTube videos. Posted one lecture. Plenty of PowerPoints, but not actual explanation of them. Just took the final and she gave only 10 mins for 5 bonus questions. It takes at least 3-4 mins just to write the stamen not including testing. Her final info was incomplete, leaving no time to correct
1/10 would recommend to masochists. Hands down the hardest class I have ever taken to earn a C or a low B. Even the experienced SQL peeps have troubles with this class. Questions worded poorly. Rarely give you a chance to practice SQL in class. Be prepared to memorize a bunch of definitions. Learn SQL on your own or you'll fail.
Her lectures are pointless. She gives tons of pop quizzes on the following chapter which means you have to self study a lot. She's very vague about her project requirements until she starts grading them. Then all of a sudden everything is wrong. Skip the lectures. They don't have anything to do with the exams.
Honestly, youre graded by very little. You better read textbooks because she doesnt lecture nor does she test whats on her BS study guide. Zero feedback. Incredibly vague instruction. Kudos to her though. Shes getting paid for literally doing nothing.
I took her over the summer and we had to take 7 quizzes and 2 exams. Exams are multiple choice and open book. There are 2 homework assignments and a project that are to be done in groups. Fairly easy class, I do wish she gave us clearer instructions we did better after she provided us with feedback from the first assignment
She is approachable & willing to help. Weekly quizzes on chapters from the book. You need to read in advance! She does not teach SQL in class. Use online websites or friends to help you. Lots of group assignments. Offers multiple extra credit. Has a midterm and a final. Midterm split into 2 days: SQL then conceptual. Read textbook & practice SQL!!
Well 70% of the class grade is determined by the midterm and the final 30% and 40% respectively. All homework is group work and there is no supplemental learning it is all reading the textbook. My main problem with this class is the each test is 50 five option multiple choice questions test then 10 exercise problems in 2 hours and 30 min.
My advice is to come into this class knowing SQL. It will help you out alot you don't need to know alot just the basics. She is a great teacher though she is always there for help. Super approachable and caring lady. It's a class that requires effort but if you put it in you will come out knowing alot about relational databases.
Prof Gonzalez has a lot of knowledge and is very smart. She is also very approachable outside of the classroom and tries to answer student's questions as clear as possible. However, exams are pretty tough- 2 midterms and 2 FINALS!!, she assumes that you know SQL already, barely lectures, skims through PPTs as if its a review session.
Great at teaching how to use SQL. HOWEVER.... her multiple choice tests are BRUTAL. It's like she goes out of her way to trick you and pull obscure things from the text. Group project/homework assignments.
Not worth risking. Too fast-paced and advanced for even a month-long summer class, especially beyond even a C. Both exams divided into both SQL and comprehensive portions, which make up 70% of overall grade. Never rounds up. No curves whatsoever. Only plus is that she is approachable and quick to respond to students' concerns when necessary.
Watch the videos she provides on Titanium. For quizzes, she expects you to know the chapter before, so watch the videos before the lecture. She is very kind and helpful out of class, so if you don't understand something in the video, go to her next. Make sure you get a good team because you're gonna meet up a lot. Overall, fun class, lots of work.
DON'T TAKE! Online classes can be difficult, but this doesn't mean you don't have the duty as a professor to provide detailed instructions for what you expect from students. Gonzalez gives excessive amounts of group work, which means you're constantly having to work around the schedule of your team. Exams are 70% of grade 60 questions in 70 min.
A lot of heavy group works and many many reading assignments my eyes are going to pop out from reading the textbook. She doesn't give clear instruction. She makes a summer online class really hard and tiring.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER
DO NOT TAKE FOR ANY REASON! IT WILL DESTROY YOUR GPA
Grades assignments late, communication isn't clear, grading for assignments aren't helpful, the final project is over 30% of your grade in which she provides vague directions on.
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR! If your are taking her, youre screwed. Your GPA will plummet. Quizzes you on material not yet covered, then after she goes over the material on the quiz. We didnt actually open SQL Server until the 6th week of the semester. Unless you absolutely have to take this class, take it with someone else or a in a different semester.
Total Waste. I really don't know how she even become a prof. Tons of material to read from the book. No actual class discussion .Her contribution is zero. I took ecommerce course. What a waste of time and money Why on the earth should I pay money to do a self Study?
Professor Gonzalez did no actual teaching in this entire class. I realize the short notice that the class had to be moved to an online format in a matter of days due to COVID, but I would have expected lectures to still have been given via zoom instead of omitted all together. Very ineffective. I would never take another class with Dr. Gonzalez.
Its probably the worst SQL class in America. Those free YouTube videos and $10 bucks sql class from Udemy are miles and miles better than her teaching ISDS 402. Im actually impressed, how one can watch 10+ hours of her lecture and barely learn anything at all. This is definitely a "Self-Learn" class to pass.
Terrible. She cut out Thursday classes at the beginning of the semester so we only had Tuesdays for an hour. Then, on multiple occasions, she cancelled class. When there is class, she sounds bored and barely says anything substantive. She takes months to grade assignments so have fun trying to improve on what you know. Take anything but this class.
Avoid this professor. Very punishing grading system, doesn't provide that many resources for students, you'd be better off teaching yourself the material. Not very helpful.
Choose your group carefully Harsh grader, study well for exams Grades slow don't expect anything back until finals week Slow email responder 1 midterm(20%), 1 final(30%), 7 group assignments(20%), 8 quizzes(5%), extra cred.(?), 1 individual project(30%) Fun subject if you are detail oriented, computer literate OR have background in CS & like logic
Avoid taking this class with her. She's horrible, doesn't even teach. You have to learn the material yourself through reading the book. Midterm & finals are on Saturday at 7AM. If you pick bad groupmates, you'll end up doing weekly assignments by yourself. Starts grading assignments the last week of the class, so you get no feedback. DON'T TAKE HER
Fun subject, horrible teacher. Unclear instructions (but grades you as if they were clear), procrastinates on grading, and goes on tangents while teaching. You have to learn the material on your own to pass. Is accessible through text and responds quickly. Has free-response and multiple choice sections in all of her tests.
Hands down the worst instructor I have had in college. I have never seen an instructor do so little and expect so much out of her students. I wish I had checked here before signing up for the class. She is just awful.
Super hard professor, the subject is interesting and fun but goodness Prof Gonzalez is pretty much useless. You will be learning everything on your own. Prepare to practice a lot and the assignments are all pretty much projects every week. Make sure to select a good group for the assignments. She waits to grade assignments until the stars align
The worst professor I have had all college. She starts grading the week before finals so you have no feedback and are constantly lost. Avoid this class at all costs; if you have to take her make sure you get good groupmates and expect the class to be more like 5 units worth of work. She's riding on tenure and doesn't care about the class.
Professor doesn't know how to teach. The class is easy to pass but you won't learn much. Poor organization, communication, and directions. Vague grading at best. Would avoid this teacher at all costs.
Idk why this professor has such bad reviews. Her online class was one of the easiest classes I've ever taken. Get a good group and you're golden to get a good grade in the class. I took ISDS351 during the 5 week summer course and I thought it was super manageable to do this course fully online.
This professor was organized however, she did not know how to teach. She gave very little time to finish the exam and her expectations were not reasonable. She is very hard to get into contact with. I will not being taking this professor again.
Worst Professor I have ever taken. Class is useless, you don't learn much and have to learn on your own. Weekly group assignments that are basically projects every week. She cancels class often and the excuses or reasons are high school student level. Final exam just took, 40 min for 5 complex questions, impossible to finish even if you had ans key
WORST PROFESSOR! Never available outside of class. Emails will not get answered. Tests were two parts. First part is based on the book. Second part is SQL. 45 minutes to finish was not enough. Does not grade until the end of the semester and is a tough grader. Group assignments were awful. Everything I learned was from another teacher on YouTube.
Prof. Gonzalez gives you what you need to pass the class online through Canvas. Lots of the students complained about the SQL part of exams, but only because they did not pratice SQL much. If you email her in a timely manner, she will respond to you and help. Many people here didnt study enough and she gives you everything you need to pass.
This isnt coming from a lazy standpoint. Shes genuinely a terrible professor. Pathetic really. Idk whats worse: her inadequacy as an "instructor" or the fact that any institution would even think of hiring her? I mean my god. Lectures dont prep you well. She cancels class, unavailable when you contact her. Submits grades late. Such a shame.
this is the worst professor in CSUF History. If she can get fired from teaching students it would be an honor. Save yourself the time and money and do not waste your time with this pathetic excuse of an educator. Doesn't even know the subject she is teaching and expects you to learn and do ridiculously hard assignments off of youtube videos.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER TO EXIST. NEVER TAKE HER CLASS. Never grades assignments until the very end of the semester, you would assume you're doing well after the assignments and exams are graded but DO NOT BE FOOLED. Her class is based off of a project that will kill your grade multiple letter grades. Hardest project you will ever do. Worst Grader.
She lives in Texas and teaches a class in Fullerton. I guess that's okay. She put you in groups and had group members teach each other. You have to book an appointment to talk to her for 2 minutes. If you know coding the class will be OK I guess... Her job as a professor is basically passive income for her.
Ester has ZERO lectures. They are all old videos that vaguely help you with the assignment. You have to look up other content and videos to pass, and she provides no guidance on how to complete assignments. None of your assignments will be graded until the end. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. PLEASE listen to my advice!
Class is entirely self-taught. Group assignments weekly, extremely difficult with little to zero instruction. 3 minutes of feedback after every assignment. Does not grade anything until end of semester. Midterm is difficult with very little time to complete. She should not be a teacher for SQL, as she does not teach. Youtube is better.
This class was very difficult. Not only that, but the professor barely did her job, did not grade assignments until the very end of the semester, was super strict on her grading, admitted we are passive income, and required her students to book an appointment to meet with her for ~2-5 minutes and showed little interest while in the meeting.
You get one project that is worth 45%, and you get to start on it week 11. If you have to demonstrate a website, you make your own website. Would prefer to have the guidelines at the start of the semester, and to have examples from past students.
This professor is incredibly lazy. Group project worth 45% of grade and there is no clear rubric on how she grades. I do not recommend anyone takes a course by this professor
Worst experience at CSUF and can't believe I paid money for this. She gives you instructions on an assignment but you have to be a mind reader to know what she's looking for. You can follow the instructions to a tee and get points taken off because she really meant something else with her instructions. Lazy worker too.
I'm almost certain the 4/5 rating is Ester herself.
Worst professor I ever had, no joke. Her instructions need to be clarified. She grades you harder than anyone with unclear instructions. For upcoming students, if you have to wait for another professor, please do so but don't take her. It's better to wait than take this kind of professor and pay for the class. WORST EVER, PROFESSOR.
Assignments and exams are extremely difficult and Professor is a very tough grader. Lots of work throughout the semester but the end is particularly difficult. Final exam and final individual project combined 55% of grade so no slouching and the project is unbelievably difficult. You need to spend about 15-20+ hours a week for a chance.
Not AS bad as some reviews say, but 100% will never take again if given the choice. Class is very disorganized, she barely communicates. Hw done in groups, and SO. MUCH. to do. Group project isn't hard, she just doesn't talk about it, so you go in blind and can't do as well as you would've. Not the worst for summer, but take anyone else if you can
Group based homework. Final Project and Final exam are 55% of grade. Limited availability (appointments to meet) for clarification. Very unclear directions. Be prepared to spend at least 20 hours on assignments and pick good group members. I read the textbook and did outside practice on websites and a B still felt very difficult to achieve.
The worst professor I've ever had in my life and the toughest grader for no reason. The biggest waste of money and time. No matter how much time/effort you put into an assignment, she will still find reasons to deduct points and is extremely strict when grading. Even if she is the only option, wait another semester and take a different professor.
Do you read these reviews Ester? Do you not take issue with how your students feel about your course? You have a consistent 1 star. Why do you not care? By far the worst professor I've ever taken in my 4 years at CSUF.
For those considering her for 402, don't get distracted by the ignorant reviews on 351. They're completely different difficulty levels, with 351 being extremely easy. The reviews for 402 are all true, and it's shocking that Ester is completely okay with the low quality of teaching she offers. How are you okay with this? Easy money probably.
Honestly, a lot of the people giving bad reviews must have not given any effort. I took her async class last semester thinking it was going to be really hard and it was the opposite. She uploads all of the lectures from her zoom class and if you actually watch them youll be fine. She also gives so much extra credit. Youll be fine.
Spent more time correcting my work instead of perfecting it because of her unclear instructions. So bad, so frustrating. If you don't reach out to her for clarification you won't pass
Horrible instructions, many students completely lost on expectations for group assignments.Finds every reason to deduct points.
At the start of the semester this professor took forever to grade until fellow classmates began emailing her. Only then did she grade in a timely manner. Perhaps the most frustrating thing is that this professors grading rubrics are all over the place and do not reflect what she actually grades on. Avoid if you can but that isnt easy.
I'm sorry, but this has been the worst class I have ever taken. The whole class failed the exam with no extra credit, no curve, and no consideration and was gone for 3 weeks. Pretty much teach yourself, the book is a hard read, and lectures are monotone/ uninspiring. Tests are hard. Its not an engineering class, this shouldn't be this difficult.
I recommend taking any other professor's class. The lectures are unclear, monotone with assignments due every week. When you try to ask for help, she answers in a riddle instead of guiding you through the problem. It's basically learning a new language where you're expected to already know everything and speak the language perfectly the next day.
Bogus professor. I'd rather persona 3 myself than take this professor.
Avoid if you can. Doesn't lecture well and assigns tough group + individual assignments that you're expected to complete in 2 days. She cancelled majority of our hybrid classes. It's doable, but a stressful class. You'll spend hours on the assignments, (esp. that ridiculous final project) and hours teaching yourself the material. Good luck lol.
Worst professor ever! Cancels classes 1/2 the time, quizzes are mostly based on self reading from the textbook. She gave all of us a midterm exam and I kid you not made us retake it since everyone bombed the test and still put our worst and 2nd score into 1. group projects worth 35% she will grade you hard and the average was 56% ESTER READ THIS!
The other reviews are a bit unfair, she did cancel class a lot but that was due to family issues and nothing in her control. I will say tho that the lectures are subpar and she is an extremely tough grader. The group project is quite ridiculous for how fast she expects you to work on it. Only one midterm, was hard tho due to lack of teaching. Avoid
I would avoid this professor. I took her hybrid class. She canceled class the majority of the time, but that was due to unforeseen family matters. She would go off on these tangents and then take up 20 minutes to almost the whole class time answering one student's question. We would heavily rely on outside resources and the textbook to learn SQL.
If you really want to learn, and DO the WORK, you will receive knowledge that is very very useful in process improvements and continuous improvement in business. All companies have information systems critical for efficiency. I learned the system to stay in top of things working for others and in my business.
Strict, structured, no shortcuts. At first I thought I failed for one mistake, but now I see she gave me the lesson I was blind to: without structure and consistency, life collapses. She looked beneath grades and see me what to build—discipline, follow-through, accountability. Hard, but unforgettable, and truly life-changing. A Model Despite it all
extremely rude, not specific at all with criteria and guidelines, but gets annoyed when you ask questions and responds rudely. do not take.
Whole class is weighed on a huge group project that has tons of little components, as if this is the only class we have. Also she is extremely rude and gets mad when you ask questions, do not take her.
