Very good teacher but pretty tough tester.
Very funny with his expressions.
Very fun professor. Subject is tough, but he explains it and it becomes easy. Moderately difficult exams, but you could get an A relatively easy.
very engaging and fun proffesor. doesn't have much class interaction, but the lectures are very dynamic. very old school guy. helps alot for the final.

Interesting ... It depends on if you understand the stuff if it's easy. Also - complete the homework.
PROBABLY THE BEST PROF IN THE MATH DEPT. Really know his concepts and take time to explain. Make the class fun and interesting with a few mathematical jokes. He is very helpful in class, in office hours, his tests are straighforward, based on the homeworks and on the review before the actual test.
He made this class very fun and interesting. The man knows a lot outside of math too. Don't be surprised to see him bursting out in song. But the way he explains things makes you want to learn. His tests should be easy if you do all the HW and understand what he is asking for.
He is very smart, funny, good, nice. All the good adjectives. Take him, math will be fun
And to think, I was almost going to switch his class at the beginning of the term because it was too early. It was definitely worth it. Go to class, do the homework and you'll do great.
He's very good. He tries so hard to teach you just learn. His jokes are bad compared to his teacching skills. Overall, one of the best Math prof. at CCNY
Awesome, simply awesome. He jokes a bit, but it helps you relax and actually understand what he's talking about. In a way, he almost tricks you into understanding and even enjoying what is a difficlt subject. He also gives partial credit, isn't a hard-ass, and is the most helpful when it comes to the Matlab. Thank you, thank you!
a really great professor, teaches really well and is so nice. Has the best jokes! Just do the homework and practise!!!!
he's good... easy to earn a A if u do the homework on time. ur gonna be lost if u dont.
The best math professor ever. very clear, very helpfull. not easy on midterms, but when you get to the final, it's a piece of cake.
basically, math for dummies
One of the best Profs I've had so far.
A breath of fresh air
He rocks.
he teach very well. basicly if you stay in class youll know everything. hw is just to help you get use the the problem more so you do it faster in exams.
Greatest math professor ever! Go to class, ask questions for better clarification, and you'll walk out with an easy A!
Best Professor out there! If u got math problems, fear no more. Akin makes math look easy. NOTE: The statement above is true, assuming that you'll do ALL your homework. This is college folks, there aren't any shortcuts.
best prefessor in city college. just to to his class and you will easily pass. thank you prof. please and please again avoid GUZMAN AT ALL COST.
He is the greatest math professor in CCNY. Always prepared, always willing to help. If your blessed with a seat in his class your grades will amaze you so long as you put in a decent amount of work.
He's a very funny prof, in a geeky way. He can communicate with students well and able to convey his idea to us and make us understand the topic. He's very lenient, he also do review and when he teach he always relate to the stuff that we know already, which makes it easy for us. I would recommend him for any math classes.
good professor but he is sometimes not orgonized
Very good professor. I failed 2 out of 3 tests with less than a 50% but I passed the last one with a 85 and got he same on the final. He gave me a B+ when I should have gotten an C-. Very fair and understanding, always willing to explain things
Great Professor. If you are interested in Sherlock Holmes he gives the best quotes. Otherwise, he explains everything and is very fair
Extremely a hard grader, notes are very confusing and speeds everything up at the end of the semester. He collects homework and grades it, why? I don't know, because it’s worth nothing towards the class grade. Sneaky guy, jokes allot makes you think otherwise, until test time. Review for the final is every problem, that’s about 50 to 70 problems a
just checking.
He is very sloppy and unorganized. He scribbles and scrabbles on the board and eventually you will be confused and lost. The derivative of e is 1. The derivative of F is F if you don't do your HW and study like theres no tomorrow. Good Luck. Ands his jokes make me puke!
He is SLOPPY AND MOPPY on the board. You cant catch up with his sloppiness. Goof luck!- The Cat in the Hat.
Out of all the teachers for calc 203, he is one of the better ones. I was one of the few out of my friends who understood the material as compared to some of the other calc teachers. However, dont expect to get an A without doing the HW!!!! and studying
Well yea don't expect an easy A. He has a good rating but hes challenging. He is a hard grader but its for your own good. He is fair with the amount of points you are given to bring up you grade. I didnt do too well but it wasn't his fault. Take him, he is one of the better math professors in the school.
He goes very fast, sometimes it is hard to understand what he is saying, or what he is writing on the board. He is also a very strict grader.
Awesome teacher. Very friendly and helpful. Explain everything clearly. If anyone doesn't understand he tries to make him/her clear. Great knowledge in Calculus, and most important thing is - he knows how to easily make us understood everything we need.
He is one of the best Professors ever. Take him if possible. He truly cares about his students and will answer any question you have. He has a very good sense of humor. I was always looking forward to go to his class. If he would have been my Calc 202 Professor, I would have never dreaded Math. Luckily he appeared and made me like math again :D
Take someone else, he is a terrible professor. There are way better math professors in the school!
The best Math Professors u can get. I had him for cal 202/203 which made me very lucky. He explains so well that all you need the textbook for is the exercises he assigns. Make sure you do them and study regularly otherwise u will most likely fail the tests. His tests are very fair if u studied. I wish he thought 391 and 392 Highly recommended.
He is the best Math professor I've had so far. Extremely helpful, very intelligent man who can really explain math to anyone. Take him if possible, he is a great teacher, very enthusiastic and with a good sense of humor.
Intersting guy, can be dismissive sometimes outside of the classroom but brilliant in it. Nice curves on the exams but strict on proofs. They do need to be perfect. Grade weighted heavy on the final. Runs out of time and rushes through a decent amoutn of material at the end of the semester. All in all a good professor highly recommended
Good professor. Awesome mustache!
It is not difficult to get an A in this class. But it's definitely not easy. You just need to do the homework and keep up with the material. He seems to rush sometimes, but that's only bc the material is intense and copious. Final weighted heavily. He's one of the better professors at CCNY. I definitely recommend him for Math 209.
I like him a lot! He is the most exellent guy I met at City College by now. He teaches very clearly and easily to understand-you need't take notes. He loves students but strict. He is very fair to every one. What's more, he is so handsome, cute and lovely.
I like him a lot! I just can say he may not fit you, but once he fits you, you will be happy to have the class all the semester. You need not take notes in his class and his exam is easy-once you pay attention to him in class, you should be fine.
He may not be good for every one, but he is the most fair one, I can tell. Even though he may not clarify the knowledge clearly enough, you won't be afraid that he will be unfair to you. He is a kind person, who is always easy to get along with, who always listens to people, who always cares every person!!!!! Strongly recommended!
Man Man, my toy!
One thing I can say is that he is a fair guy, he gives grades based on what he thinks you deserve. Just work hard, and you'll get the grade you deserve.
I agree what is said below. And, I love him!
He is a very good professor deff recommend him. He explains things clearly you just have to pay attention in class and keep up with the homeworks and you will be able to pass his exams. He is also funny and very sweet. I hated math and he actually made me start liking it and not dreading going to math class take him hes great!
Great guy, but does chicken scratch on the board. Pay attention and think quick in class. I recommend you read ahead to get the most out of his class. He moves fast and can be hard to follow. He helps a bit if you see him in person. Great guy though, and funny to boot. Awesome bow ties!
Nice guy. Little too Socratic.
He is the einstein of math period. I am a nerd and i have never seen a prof as smart as him. He might be alil quick and fast , but he is good and gives alot of partial in exams. very nice guy and an A+ prof.
Best math teacher ever! VERY clear and easy to understand. His tests are extremely fair if you do the homework and pay close attention to the examples he does in class. You will be more than well-prepared for the final exam and he is pretty funny in class so boredom is not really an issue.
He is probably as old as City College itself lol jk. But seriously he is the GREATEST math teacher in City College. No one else beats this guy on math 391. As he likes to say he teaches "cooking recipes" and really that's what he does. Listen to what he says and do all hw plus study The Wroskian Theorem cuz it comes on exams
A good lecturer and answers questions decently. The problem is when he writes on board. Barely writes anything. When he does it is all over the place. Hard to follow a proof if he writes it on the board. Exams comes from review questions. He is strict on proofs as in he expects a rigorous proof. Mostly dictates proofs and writes few details down.
Very good mathematician. If he taught a little slower and wrote a little neater this class would have been perfect.
This is probably the hardest math class there is and he did not make it any easier. Did not even complete the topics for the coarse. Proofs are sloppy written, all over the place. Unless you can take notes while he lectures will you succeed, wont be able to read the board anyways. Exams are fair though. Learn the material on your own.
Overall excellent! Its true that his writing on the board could be a bit neater and more organized, but otherwise he is everything you want in a professor. Explains all concepts very clearly and does a bunch of examples in class. Always willing to field questions during lecture with no attitude whatsoever. I am very glad he taught my DE class!
Had a B average in his class exams for Math 391 and didn't do well on the final and got a F. He is a hard grader! Take him at your own risk
At time it can be very difficult to understand the professor. Tests aren't too hard but one mistake can cause you to get a bad grade. Harsh grader. Class is all base on exams and final, so dont mess up on the exams or else you will fail.
Overall, not good. Brushes by important concepts at a super fast pace, doesn't show you where things come from. Do this, do that... all day long. Talks to the blackboard. Doesn't even pause for a second to ask for questions. His exams had ridiculous and unnecessary computations, and were impossible to finish.
He enjoys going into theories, and he lectures with dynamics. He assigns homework but it's not collected. Teaches his own way, so textbook is supplementary, not necessary. Has little tolerance for certain math mistakes. Consistently goes over how to avoid common math errors. Loves the Wronskian. Expects students to try. Tells jokes and stories.
Preps you well for the final since he is the head of 391. However, tests are ridiculously hard and long. Averaged a 20% on tests before acing the final with a B-. Chicken scratch hand writing and writes and erases fast. Learn and familiarize shortcuttricks bc you won't finish his tests without them. DO PRACTICE PROBLEMS.
Curves insanely but most students fails the tests.
Went to every lecture, class was relatively easy, pretty sure i aced the final
Clear lectures. Assigned homeworks are not mandatory, but highly recommended in doing them. Fair grader. Fair exams. If you do bad on one exam and does good on final, that exam will weigh less. Highly recommend.
Homework was not very helpful in my opinion, but you really must pay close attention to his lecture because some of the questions you will have won't be explained on textbook or google. If you pay attention in class, there is no reason that you should get B+ and higher in the class. Study the definitions and proofs.
Good professor. DO NOT CUT CLASS HE SKIPS A LOT OF MATERIAL AND YOU WILL WANT TO KNOW WHAT HE IS TESTING YOU ON. Gives too many shortcuts and not enough theory, but it seems that's all there is time for and the class is called "Methods of Diff Eq." Funny, clear, organized, better than most math professors. Responds to emails and holds office hours.
Had him in a big Lecture hall. Only taught from a power point. Graded only on exams. Found him confusing. I think he would be fine in a small class, but not an auditorium. Did not seem to really care about students too much. But he did respond to emails. Would rather not take him again.
Almost 50% off a two page Laplace problem because I made the arithmetic mistake of multiplying 6*4 incorrectly. He's an "okay" professor at best, does zoom through material. If you review slides before hand you're good. Structures his grading to deter students/"weed out" students. Never had a professor this bad at giving credit. Study old tests.
His tests aren't hard per se, as much as he gives too many questions for an 1 15 min midterm. You have to know diff like the back of your hand to finish his tests and do well. He teaches well, from the slides, and answers questions with a good amount of detail. He understands diff very well.
he is actually there to teach mathematics. the best person you may have a math class with in your entire academic career.
You definitely have to work hard in this class. He's a very very very harsh grader. A single mistake can cost you the entire problem. You must do his homework to do well (even though it's optional). PRACTICE IS KEY.
Too much depends on the final in this class. If you fail the final you will most likely fail. The 3 midterms are easy because they are IDENTICAL to his past exams and everyone copies or memorizes. Your final grade is too dependent on the final. This professor is risky! Nobody attends his lecture, difficult to pay attention. Grading is HARSH
He is the one that actually teaching something in CCNY. His three midterms and final are long and identical to the previous one. But he will trick you sometimes. I failed the first two exams and the got B+/A- for the third exam and final, and he gave me C+
Solid choice. Although, I heard of professors teaching this class that gives away easy A's. In his class you actually learn a lot from lectures if you pay attention and love math. If you dont like slide lectures he's not for you. Sit in front to see his important scribbles on the board. Funny (or so he thinks) but great guy.
Awesome professor. The material is difficult but he is very familiar with it. Three exams and a final... no dropping. He was available for office hours. He assigned hw problems for practice only, never collected. He's very approachable and cares about his students.
Harshhhh grader. Had an 85 test average and gave me a C+ while not responding to my emails about my final grade. Class lectures aren't good as he tends to do 2 chapters a day while you're still trying to remember what the previous chapter was on. Recommend learning on your own and doing hw.
Pretty good professor. All the material is on his slides. Practice those and you'll be fine. Lectures are pretty enjoyable.
Goes over material way too quickly, doesnt inspire you to do better, doesnt grade homeworks. Final grade depends on 3 exams and a final, so no space for error. Doesnt really care about students. I've had better professors, but have to say he is pretty funny. If you care about learning and have lots of motivation, he's the right pick.
He lectures off his slides so get ready to jot down things fast BUT he provides a lot of insight into the material. Gives a fair amount of homework with through provoking problems. He gives review sheets and the tests are straight from the review sheets so thats great aka your learning is done at home not during the test. I hope to have him again.
He explained as many time as asked
Amazing professor but super harsh grader. You HAVE to study for the final. It basically determines whether or not you pass this whole semester.
Nice guy, but harsh grader. You are only graded on a midterm, final, and inclass quizzes, each of which is worth 5% of your total grade. He uses power point slides and writes tiny notes on the board so you better sit in front. He gives a review sheet for the exams, but they don't help at all since the exams are much more complicated than them.
He is alright as a professor, but his grading is ridiculous . He won't curve your grade if its 1-2 points to a whole letter grade above. Lets say you have an average of 89 you will receive a B. Exams can be found online, just the final is bad because there are more mathematically difficult problems given which require some knowledge of identities.
Prof. Akin is a very caring and articulate professor. Highly recommend if you enjoy proofs and theory! Grades were determined by a midterm, final, and quizzes. For quizzes, pay close attention to lecture a few days prior. he only tests you on material he teaches. And he tends to repeat himself. Overall very nice and fair but you have to work hard.
Incredibly smart man, absolutely terrible professor.
Not a good teacher at all! Dude teaches advanced math and just reads off slides. Lecture is never helpful and the online exams used crazy language, making it impossible to even understand the question. His in class exams or textbook hw questions are much more straight-forward. He doesn't trust students when there is an issue about the exam!!
This professor is so disorganized, assigned homework with no specific due date but ended up marking homework as "LATE/VERY LATE". Professor doesn't even teach, just reads off of slides and expects you to figure it out on your own. He tries to be funny but isn't. He may appear sweet but he's a devil. Stay away.
Awful
He will read off slides and verbally teach you statistics for 2hrs. Extremely boring lectures, where he will have you imagine computations and proofs by verbally explaining them. While this is an intro to statistics course, it's tough. His exams(take home) are tailored to his material and he won't accept external sources. Very tough grader. Avoid
Dont take him if you have other options.
This is a honest answer. Professor Akin is an incredibly smart man. He could read of the slides and remembers the things. However, he forgets that we are students. This class was made very theoretical and plus he expects us to imagine the problems while he read of the slide. This is a difficult course was made more difficult with how he teaches.
He uses slides but for this class the content is very difficult and had to rely a lot on self study. There were 3 exams and a final which were difficult and no easy ride, there is no clear grading criteria as each test had a different scoring grade and my grade was left a mystery. Going to have to work hard and stay up late to pass this class.
In general, I would say math 391 is an easy class and Professor Akin is a solid choice because he is articulate and caring. While all math professors in ccny are lazy because all their exams are multiple choices(no partial credits). Professor Akin is aware of the situation and gives us extra credit question in case we miss some questions.
Professor Akin is a nice guy but I wouldn't recommend him as a professor. Maybe things are different in person, but online, there is no partial credit on his multiple choice math exams and is pretty unforgiving in his grading scheme. I also just didn't find that he explains things clearly. He reads off of slides and I ended up teaching myself.
Study from outside resources, he's not that great at explaining
I am very sure that professor Akin would be a great professor for in person class. However for online he is awful. He teaches with slides, never uses white board or any other stuff to do the math. Instead, he reads off the slides which is extremely not helpful. His tests are okay if you know the material which you definitely wont get from lecture
The whole point of taking this professor is passing the exams by learning the material outside the class. Otherwise, you'll go through lectures with slides, explanations and jokes you won't understand.
Very good. A pure mathematician- doesn't just rattle off the formulas and methods for solving diffeqs. Lectures are well constructed and presented using ppt. Good for covering more material, but some ppl may not like it over oldschool chalk. ppts are all posted too for reference. Available outside of class. If you do the hwk, you'll pass.
he mainly reads off of slides, so his lectures are a bit hard to follow. he's still an amazing professor and is able to thoroughly explain concept in a digestible manner. if you do ALL the homework, there's no reason you should do bad on exams (exams are similar to HW). he's also pretty funny and likes telling silly stories.
His midterms are just like the homework problems and the final is also like his midterms. He's always willing to help during his office hours and he teaches using PowerPoint. If you do all his hw, he adds 5 points to your term average and also explains the concepts really well. He tends to go a little fast sometimes, but overall, great professor.
Good review sessions before the test. Also posts study guides for the tests and even final. He tries to make the lectures interesting. Hw is extra credit and there are like 8 of them. He did like a little recap at the beginning of each class on what we talked about last class, I found it very helpful. Pretty nice guy, ask questions if ur confused
First off attending is pointless because his handwriting is illegible so taking notes becomes pointless so you have no idea what's written on blackboard. He does in exchange read off slides but if that's the case why won't you read off of the textbook. He also gives you wrong marks for right proofs. In short avoid & don't take math classes in ccny
You will lose a lot of points if you make small mistakes on the test even if you use the right methods (4 or 5 points on a 10-point question). The homework is extra credit, he adds 5 points to your final term average if you do most of it. He doesn't mind if you submit hw late. Nice guy! Attendance is not mandatory. Grades tests very quickly.
He's the best for Math 39100, except he teaches at 8 am only. You MUST go to lecture as his slides are not that good on their own. The best way to ace his exams is to practice the homework problems a lot and dig up past midterms. The final is a culmination of all midterms. If you do all the HW, you will get extra credit. Lenient with HW due dates.
Professor Akin is one of the best math professors I took and he's the most recommended for differentials. He only presents in lectures in slides but you can see them in his webpage, and you have to practice most of the homework problems and sample final questions to prepare for the exams. He is always accessible and sometimes would say a few jokes.
Professor Akin was a very fair professor. He gives 3 tests(20% each) and 1 final(40%). His exams are very similar to previous years exams so try to access them as they and the hw problems are your best bet for study material. If you do this you will pass with no worries whatsoever!
Overall a good professor, attendance is not mandatory but I would recommend attending as he gives hints as to which questions will be on the exam. 8 homeworks throughout the semester. His lectures can get very abstract and I wish he would do more examples on the board. Somewhat of a tough grader on exams especially when it comes to definitions.
Honest opinion: he is not a strict grader but his lectures were super boring. i never went to class since ain't nobody tryna go to an 8am differential class. as long as you get a hold of the previous midterms, you are set! youtube university is the best university
He's looks really cool in person (W moustache), he's got a really chill vibe. The attendance isn't mandatory (I rarely attended). Self studied all of the lecture materials and redid the practice problems on the slides. He posts practice exams too and the actual exams are really fair. He explains laplace transforms and fourier series really well
Professor's lectures are from the slides and midterm exams (3 tests, 20% each) are not too difficult but he is VERY strict on grading it, like making a minor error. The final exam was challenging side but if you use the practice exam on math department website and practice every topic shown in the slides, you will be prepared.
great professor but teaches off of slides. class isn't very difficult at all just very time consuming with the HW. Attendance isn't mandatory, if you dont plan on attending a 8 am class every time make sure you lock in on the HW and the previous exams.
he's honestly the goat. his exams can include questions from previous exams, so do those, and you will get free points. you will benefit a lot from doing the hw, which can be found in the textbook. hw and attendance is not mandatory, but i encourage you to do the hw.
Great professor, but teaches from slides. I recommend doing the HW problems he posts before every class. The Class isn't difficult at all if you know your stuff. His Exams are very fair. Attendance isn't mandatory but make sure you study. (Especially for exam 3). I would honestly take him again if i can.
Professor Akin has a chill vibe, and his lectures are worth attending. Mastering the practice exams and homework problems is key to acing the tests. unstuck AI was a lifesaver for my study prep - definitely check it out!
He can't teach linear, but good at differential. 99% of the time are reading off from the slides and explaining it in a difficult way that Princeton University students can understand. VERY STRICT grader for definitions question on his exams. You get a word wrong one then no points for you. So be prepared memorizing the definitions word by word.
The material isn't bad and exams are similar to past exams but his grading is so bad. Very stingy with partial credit.
Genuinely bad professor. I understood every concept and idea he presented, I knew the math and what to do. The problem was his tests are lengthy and harsh, you often don't get enough time to finish everything as well as how harsh he is. The 2025 final was one of the hardest finals period, and he doesn't drop a test unlike other professors.
Attendance is optional except for test days/final (cannot be made up), and class is graded solely on 3 midterms + final. No curve or dropped exam, but he does count bad midterm grades less. Exams are extremely similar to past exams, so master them (some problems are identical). He grades harshly but this class is still doable with some practice.
He's the best one for 391. The materials are very clear. Exams are similar to past exams. If you practice the past exams, you'll do just fine in his class. Attendance is not mandatory. 3 midterms (60%) and 1 final (40%)
I attended 1 of his 8 A.M. lectures and never went again. His latex slides are difficult to follow (skips every important step). At least he's nice funny & replies to emails like he lives in his inboxes. He's alright. He says he doesn't curve (but he curves a tiny bit). harsh grader... takes off a considerable amount of points for minor mistakes.
Good prof, lecture posted online, no attendance. Only graded on tests, however.
