hey, i just took mr. lee's ics9 class in fall quarter. it was very educational and i've learned a lot from his class. it was actually a fun class to be in and had a lot of good discussions, which kept me awake and tuned in. it is those kind of class where if you show up and keep up with the readings, you'll do fine in the class. definitely recommend
Mr. Lee is a pretty cool teacher. I had him for ICS9. We spent most of the time on class discussion. You learn a lot from other your classmates as they share their experiences. As long as you do your work and pay attention in class you will pass with an A. Mr. Lee is funny, he is very lenient when it come to research project.
Mr. Lee has got to be one of the coolest teachers out there! He's laid back. His homework is usually just to read out of the book & some writings here & there. His teaching methods are fun. Attendance is mandatory but hey, which classes really aren't any more? You will learn alot from his class. He's definitely a teacher you'll never forget...
i really enjoyed taking this class. you learn a lot and you have fun at the same time :)! great friend-making environment too. professor lee really knows his stuff and his lectures are never boring. only thing i would grade down on is that he takes very long to grade papers! great teacher though, highly recommended =)
Great teacher very intellectual. really wants his students to learn and very helpful if you need help. Cares more about his students learning than giving grades. very understanding
Easy A, lectures, articles, and study guide are posted on the course website. Always available for questions and emails. Really fun class.
Lee Ethan is a cool guy who knows how to teach and have fun at the same time and he genuinely wants to help you and make sure you succeed. Take his class you'll learn something and have a blast doing it at the same time
He is very clear about student responsbility so you know exactly what to do.
Professor Lee is very open minded though he is also very opinionated. I was very impressed with his willingness to discuss, openly, controversial subjects and his fairness in grading papers that he patently disagreed with. He is an excellent speaker and seems to appreciate polite discourse regardless of his particular points of view as long as the
Prof. Lee is very open minded though, very opinionated. I was impressed with his willingness to discuss controversial subjects and his fairness in grading papers that he disagreed with. He is an excellent speaker and appreciates polite discourse as long as the dialogue is relevant to his topic. I recommend him for any entry level college students.
Mr. Lee is the best teacher I have ever had! He made ICS 4 so much fun and it made me realize so much stuff that i have never knew before! I Definitely recommend him! Take him! He is super nice! and he gives you extra credit to see fun things! He gave us extra credit to go to a Comedy Club and it was so much fun! Mr. Lee rules!!
MR.LEE is cool. I was kinda nervous when I was in this class. I show up everyday. This teacher will call your name randomly and you have to read what he tells u to & its pretty fun class!! I recommend him!! VERY HELPFUL TOO!!
Great teacher! He makes sure to get you involved with the material and keeps it interesting. Very understanding of the needs of the students. He makes sure you undersand the material. One of the best professors I've had.
really kool teacher
Mr.Lee only requires you to participate in class so you can understand the material that is needed for his midterms and final, he doesn't really asks much but to read the readings that are really boring but he also teaches you a great technique to skim through readings. Take the class your mind will be opened on how much you'll learn in that class.
He's EXTREMELY good at what he does. His lectures open your eyes to the world around you. He has tons of extra credit so if you mess up on a test you still could get an A+. Make sure you participate in class. It's 200 pts, while the tests are just 50pts each
Very helpful and encourages class involvement in discussions about something you have trouble with.
There is no reon for not taking this class. The teacher is GREAT, the course is UC/CSU transferable. This class will completely change the way you see things. I regreted at no point for taking this class. Mr Lee is amazing, he even takes his time to help you to improve your writing....
Great class to take highly recommended. Very informative and interactive. The readings are interesting, and the prof. uses a lot of media in class. Not a tough class but you must be engaged. You will learn a lot.Fun class. Ethan is very helpful and down to earth. Exams are based off the readings and lectures.
Without a doubt the most important class I've ever taken. Highly recommend you take this professor because his classes will open your eyes and you will realize the significance of race in everyday life that you probably have never noticed before. Funny teacher, honest, very nice. He genuinely cares about his students and class
Mr. LEE is an O.G. in his class you will learn a lot about race and the racism in the American society. After you take his class you will see the American society in different eyes (believe me). His assignments and tests are not difficult as long as you do the readings and pay attention in the class.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PROFESSOR LEE!! HE IS A GREAT ONE & DOESN'T ASK TOO MUCH OF YOU BESIDES ATTENDING HIS CLASS & DOING YOUR HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS.WHICH ARE ONLY LIKE THREE PAPERS & HELLA EXTRA CREDIT.IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO GET LOWER THAN A "B-" IN HIS CLASS UNLESS YOUR REALLY SLACKING!HE TALKS ABOUT REAL LIFE SITUATIONS THAT KEEP YOU INTERESTED!
This guy blew my mind, pure genius taught by geniuses. Opens your eyes to the world around you that's been covered with a veil of racial oppression. Cool dude too. He analyzes seemingly every angle of his topics with extremely interactive classroom discussions. Probably the most memorable and influential figures higher education.
He's absolutely great. He engages the class every time and I look forward to his class every morning- even at 8:30 AM ! His work isn't exactly hard. Just study for the exams, write the 3 papers required for the quarter, and PARTICIPATE IN CLASS! He won't remember you if you don't speak up in class. Otherwise, he has a sense of humor and he cares.
Great professor. He doesn't lecture AT the class, but gets them engaged everyday. 3 easy papers, NOT essay format. Material for tests is always covered beforehand. Readings for the most part are easy. He'll gladly help if you need clarification and has great humor. You'll leave this class having learned things that will stick with you. Go to class!
Highly recommend this professor. He is one of the few professors at DA that cares about his students success. You will have three papers,a mid term and a final.
Professor Lee was intimidating at first, but I'm glad I stuck it out. I learned a lot from him and the class. I would reccommend him anytime!
Just attend class and do the reading and this class is a ease. You will learn LOTS from him. He tries his best to keep students interested in the topic(many video clips) and keeps his lecture with current news.
easy a, interesting class, really helps students for preparation into a UC or CSU, one of the best teachers i've ever had. good sense of humor, and is not boring at all. must take his class!
At first, I thought he was an ass. But at the end of class, he means well and blends in with the student body interests wise. ie: music, shows, movies... He's a good professor and just wants to see his students succeed by giving that university atmosphere and support.
Professor Lee is AWESOME!! His ICS class was really great! I definitely learned a lot from him and it was easy to do well as long as you payed attention and did the work. I definitely recommend taking him!!
Really interesting class and he teaches it well. I'd recommend taking his class. Wish there were more teachers like him.
Professor Lee was great throughout last quarter. He makes the content easily accessible, fun, interesting and yet helpful! I had a great time, and will definitely be taking another class!
I took his class for Fall 2010, and Professor Lee is a GREAT teacher. He goes out of his way to help students understand the material. Very understanding. There should be more teachers like him. The class is very fun.
He is super easy and super chill. I took this class at 7:30am dreading it the first day when walking into class but after the first class, I did not mind walking up at 7:30. theres hw every week or so. But its self-explanatory. he has a group project worth a full grade at the end and only has one midterm then the final. I would recommend taking him
He is one of the Best Instructors at De Anza College. Make-sure you do the reading and take notes so when in class he asks you about the reading your life will be easier. Don't procrastinate on the reading (they are great readings). Take his class for sure!!
Professor Lee is a great teacher. My favorite class taken since I have been here. At first he comes off as kind of a jerk, makes you feel stupid. But he is a really nice guy. Class is SUPER interesting. There is one big project and 2 tests. Easy class if you go everyday.
The materials are interesting, and he makes it simply to understand. Read all the readings throughly and drop down the main points, you will do fine on exams. Try to pick a really efficient group for your presentation. You really have to do the work.
He's a pretty funny teacher, and explains vocabulary and concepts pretty clearly. As long as you do all the work, and understand the concepts/vocab by going to the lectures, you're guaranteed to pass with a decent grade. The only thing is that he takes roll by calling on you individually to answer questions (terrible if its an early morning class)
He is a fun guy. It was interesting to learn that were concepts presented. Class was fulfilling and not hard, there is one group presentation. I really enjoyed it. You should take him for intercultural studies.
Amazing professor. Took ICS 20 over the summer, and it was incredibly easy. Write a few papers, do a group presentation. Come to class, listen, and you're sure to get an A.
OMG, i love Lee's classes. I took ICS 20 and ICS 4. I have learned a lots. He's very understanding, kinda easy (if you really try to study). He's always super helpful. His lectures are really easy to learn and remember.
the thing with summer class is we have a short amount of time to cover a lot material. we were rushing to learn as much as we could. overall, i give this class full points because i was awake every lecture and it was fun learning. also because the teacher is darn funny lol i recommend taking this class! you wont regret it!
I took this over the summer with prof lee. At first iwas scared to be in his class given that he goes down the roll and makes sure that everyone talks. However as the course went on, i found that this was a very helpful tactic. He is a fun & engaging teacher.I recommend him if youre not a history fan . he makes it fun & interesting!
Not only do I recommend the class but also I recommend the professor! He was helpful and entertaining, asked thought provoking questions, and challenged the class to think outside of our comfort zones through creative lectures. I learned a lot concerning race and have changed my opinions and ideas because of the class. Absolutely take it!
Professor Lee is very passionate about the things he teaches. His assignments are pretty straightforward and easy but, his exams are VERY VERY DIFFICULT unless if you have written down EVERYTHING he has ever lectured about and memorized EVERY page of the textbook. Great teacher nonetheless. Recommended!
This is probably the most interesting class I've had for my first quarter of college. Professor Lee does a wonderful job explaining racial issues and makes the class fun and interesting. Even at 8:30 in the morning, you will never fall asleep during lectures. He really cares about the success of his students. If I had the space, I'd take his ICS 20
He helps students a lot and the homework and other assignments are petty much straight forward. His tests are kind of difficult, there is more to 1 answer on his tests so make sure you read the questions carefully and remember whatever you read because if you miss any info or readings, its a big loss on your exams.
His class was very interesting. We had one midterm and one final, no other quizzzes. Both tests were straightforward, you will get a good grade as long as you read the book. There were lots of things to remember, but the class was fun.
Very understanding and so friendly to students. The test is not very simple but a bunch of other opportunities are available to make up your test and get good grade. The concept is really interesting.Take him!
Best prof. ever! so understanding and helpful and if you do the homework as he says you get an A for sure.
A great instructor who really tries get students interested in learning. The work is fairly simple: weekly readings, videos and a midterm and final. The group project is a huge part of your grade also but is easy and fun. There's also participation every day so be prepared.
Love this class. prof makes it fun and interesting. test are easy and straight forward. homework is manageable. mr. lee is a great wonderful professor!
Mr.Lee is by far the most efficient and professional teacher I have ever had. He not only is down to earth with his students and makes the class fun, he also finds intesting and new ways to help his students learn. I highly recoment this instructor to both people who love, and people who dislike going to school. His teaching strategies are the best
I really like Lee. He actually wants us to learn and not just throw material at us. I feel that he also understands "us students" because he's been through the school phase recently. The class isn't hard, but you just can't skip class or not pay attention. I enjoyed this class and definitely recommend it.
He turned the history class in to something fun and relevant. He uses pop culture like linsanity and movie clips to explain concepts, makes assignments relatable to us, there's nothing I can say negative about this guy. He's not too easy that he's a pushover, but he challenges you to think. It's worth it to pay attention, he gives good advice.
Professor Lee provided a lot of material regarding Asian American culture and history. He also included current events such as Linsanity. I enjoyed his enthusiasm on the subject matter and he tried his best to keep students interested. Overall a great class and highly recommended.
Take his class! It does require reading the material and attending class but it is well worth it. Make sure you're paying attention in class because he calls on EVERYBODY.
Oh my god, I loved this class. He is an AMAZING teacher. Read the book and come to class with an open mind. He cold calls (goes down the attendance list) so there's no chance for you to "hide"! Super interesting and changed my life!
One of the most interesting classes I've taken in my life and one of the first classes I actually wanted to pay attention in. Keeps students well entertained with interesting videos and stories that I would've never thought to be relevant to our class. Really changed the way I thought about things.
Professor Lee is an awesome professor! Lectures are super engaging and he uses videos. You do need to attend class because he has a participation grade and calls on everyone. Super helpful, responsive, and really wants you to succeed. He grades fairly, textbook choice was great, and you learn a lot. Definitely recommend and would take again!
Definitely take Professor Lee! He is clear, helpful, and wants his students to learn and succeed. His lectures are interactive and uses a lot of videos. The book choice he uses is really interesting too. Take him :)
I don't know how anyone can have anything negative to say about him. He is funny, and his class is both engaging and entertaining. Uses a lot of interesting videos and film clips to illustrate his point. Very helpful, friendly, and has a great sense of humor. His personal stories are really interesting! Take him, you won't regret it!
This class can be easy or challenging depending on how much you want to take out of it. However, you will LEARN so much from this teacher because he is passionate in teaching and is a great teacher for ethnic studies. Class is not too boring because he shows movie clips and does activities along with group work. TAKE THIS CLASS! YOU WONT REGRET!
This is one of the best classes I ever taken! I usually hate history but I love this class. I have to say Ethan is better than some of the professors at UCs. He is very passionate in his teaching and will go out of his ways to help you succeed. Like many have said, he's makes class very interesting and calls on everyone. Take his class(:
Recycles same material from previous quarter, does not challenge your thoughts whatsoever. Makes other people read for class so he doesn't have to. Easy class (no text book) but insulted my intelligence... Needs to reconsider how we approaches the class. Could have been taught in a more interesting/informative manner
I love this class! I definitely recommend!! He is so nice and easy!! He doesn't use a textbook in this class which saves you a lot of money. He is so nice and he always helps his students!! It's just lectures and group discussions. His class is pretty easy but it's also very interesting! He calls on everyone so don't be shy! :)
TAKE HIM!!! highly recommend. He is so passionate about teaching and he's SO nice to everyone! he call on everyone so don't be shy in his class! we have 1 midterm and 1 final. very easy class :) And also no textbook!! saves you money :)
Mr. Lee is an awesome teacher. I highly recommend to take this class. You do learn a lot, its very fun and interactive. Better make sure to participate in class. The exams are fairly easy and no book necessary for this class!
Nice teacher. His teaching style is different than others. You may feel he is not teaching, but end of the day you will know the materials.
He is such an amazing teacher. Whoever said bad things about him doesn't understand his style of teaching. he is so helpful and would always answer my questions. his class is really easy. No textbook = saves money. I learned a lot in his class. Take him.
poor quality
Lee is an awesome professor!!! I took his class because he was highly recommended on here and I see why! Take anything he teaches. I'm taking him again next quarter. Really nice man, relates extremely well to his students and makes a subject I'm already majoring in even more enjoyable. Highly recommended!
He is calm in class, rarely gets mad. A lot of your grade is based on a big group presentation, so make sure that you are not a slacker when it comes to group work. If you pay attention in class, following his online schedule, and actually doing the work he wants you to do, you will be fine. Just keep up with the video clips and reading assignments
Way too easy.
Easy class but disorganized teacher. He has a schedule, but doesn't follow it. Main priority is the group presentation which is a huge chunk of your grade. No textbook, but there is short book you can get at the library that you'll start reading week 6. Good class for an easy A, but I got seriously annoyed some days.
Really chill professor. He's very funny, he has interesting lectures, his classroom is a positive learning environment. The downside is that he is extremely unorganized. The only thing you need to worry about in this class are the two essays and your group presentation. The quizzes and final are almost a joke. Easy class, easy A.
He was interesting and challenged the class to think. He found ways to make us relate the material to ourlives. He was pretty awesome. I enjoyed this class.
Took the hybrid summer class and felt way too quick. However, he is still able to teach us a lot. Funny guy and laid back professor.
Pros: good sense of humor, challenging questions in the class, providing a great deal of free reading materials that relate to the course, reasonable grades, warm and thoughtful suggestions for every student. Cons: rational and demanding. Overall: you should take his class if you really want to learn! He is a A+ professor :)
This is the most interesting class I had in a while. Very intellectually engaging. Learned a lot. Didn't think I would get an A, but ..... :)
Doesn''t seem that welcoming at first but the class warmed up to him. He calls on people alphabetically from the roll sheet to answer questions. Don''t think that it''s enough to sit there and be quiet he expects participation. Really likes movies so if that''s something you''re good at then consider making one.
Took the ICS 22 class. Very subjective grader. He s extremely tough grader on presentation. He s the most unfair ever if he does not like you he will give u unreasonable low grade.
you might find the class material interesting but he is kind of weird that he does not seem to care about his students. He is also kind of selfish if u make him feel annoyed he will fail u without giving any reason .
don't take him, he is a snub, tough grader on group presentation. ICS should be a booster for GPA, but he will so tough in grading. We work 3 weeks for group presentation and he gave us C and told us we deserve even lower grade. (I am an A student)
DO NOT TALK HIM. SO unorganized. Not a fair grader. He decides early on if he likes you or not and if he doesn't he will do everything in his power to make you unsuccessful. I have always been an A+ student. Get along with all my teachers, but he did not like me for some reason. I always came to every class and worked hard.
Great teacher, would take his class again. Attendance isn't mandatory but it will definitely help. Not many assignments and only online quizzes. Very passionate and funny teacher and makes the information interesting and applicable.
This class was the best class of my life.. A class that I actually learned somthing from. Mr. Lee's personality is great and he is always full of energy in class. It is an easy class to pass IF YOU GO TO CLASS AND DO ALL THE ASSIGNMENTS. loved it
Very interesting class. Professor Lee does teach this curriculum really well. In order for you to pass the class with your desired grade you need to show up to class everyday and work hard. This class tests your critical thinking skills. I highly recommend Professor Lee.
Prof Lee goes out of his way to make sure that the class is understandable and relatable. His lectures aren't boring and his quizzes aren't hard. There is no mid-term and only 2 papers that aren't even required to be in essay format. Theres no textbook just a paperback that he only assigns a few chapters in. Great teaching style and class.
Professor Lee is an awesome teacher and he wants all his students to pass even if you don't read everything you are required to read. Gives out 5 quizzes a big group presentation worth most of your grade and the final. The presentation is either hard or simple depending on how interested you are in your topic. Definitely take him!
the professor was awesome. his class was at 7:30 AM but I enjoyed to sit in class. he knew how to lecture to not be boring. he is so respectful and i recommend him for every one.
Prof Lee is an amazing teacher, and the material is interesting. The class was inspiring. I worked very hard for this class as a science major, I stressed, but eventually got an A. Not too much homework, but you are expected to participate in class, do the assigned readings, think critically, and learn how to do research. Strongly recommended.
To this day, he's the best professor I have ever had in college. I took him at De Anza before transferring to a private university and I have used what he taught me in all my Sociology courses. He's incredible. Very nice, very helpful, very wise. Take his class and I guarantee you you'll be glad you did. Lee is the best!!
Ethan is an ok teacher. I love his jokes and stories that he uses to explain the material. However sometimes it does feel like he gets impatient whenever a student doesn't answer right away. But his assignments actually apply to ourselves which makes the writing easy. there is a group presentation too.
Professor Lee is a great teacher, he helps relate lessons to present day things, not too much hw, no textbook just a reading book that is not expensive at all. Talks about Beyonce once in a while. Definitely would take another class with him.
Understands that ppl dont read so he assigned groups to do a chapter and summarize it for the whole class. Very smart and funny teacher even though everyone was hella quiet during class even when he asked questions. Really enjoyed the class should take it and learn about Asian history!!!
Professor Lee's class was very interactive and interesting. It was definitely one of the best class I really enjoy taken. Not only does he teach you more than the content of the subject, he also pushes you to be a critical yet creative thiner. So inspiring that you won't look at your surrounding the same way anymore after his class.
Ethan is a great teacher. Just show up to class, and you will learn a lot about the class which will help you on your quizzes. He is one of the best professors I have taken at De Anza. Show up to class and do your work and you will learn a lot from the class.
Interesting class and lots of interesting class discussions. Lee is a very funny professor and he is not a tough grader. Theres hardly any homework and maybe one or two midterms. He will help you if you approach him after class or email him. I learned a lot in his class. Good professor!
Professor Lee genuinely wants us to do well in school and in our class. He gave out great feedback for our project and provided a lot of extra credit this quarter. However, it seems like he has no tolerance for those who dont try in his class and slack off. Participation and attendance is important. I enjoyed this class and learned a lot.
Truth is, I don't know what exactly to make of Lee. He can be difficult and demeaning in his responses, but in general, his lectures are easy to understand and he is willing to give you the help and feedback that you need if you ask for it. Lee teaches his class almost objectively, but so long as you do your role, you should pass with an A.
I don't know what he's doing, and I'm sure he doesn't either. He keeps assigning things with vague instructions and when students ask questions, he doesn't know how to answer them. He is very unorganized. His readings are difficult to understand and he doesn't give us enough time on the quizzes. His quizzes are tricky and mentions small details.
If you pay attention in class, you'll definitely pass this class. Professor Lee tells you what will be on the test, so you will do well on your quizzes and test. He likes it when you add a lot of personal experiences on your essays. His lecture is super interesting and you won't get bored!! You learn so much from his class. Highly recommend.
I very much enjoyed taking this class and am bummed that, due to this pandemic, I wasn't able to enjoy it in person. I enjoyed the Zoom lectures as they were engaging and on an interesting topic. The organization of the online modules is slightly hectic, but manageable. I never had any issues in reaching out to ask questions or get feedback.
big interview assignment not hard but takes up a lot of time and energy he's hard to reach tbh sometimes I'll ask him a question and then a follow-up and then book its two weeks later when he answers really interesting class, a lot of videos (lectures or youtb) no online meetings !
This class was by far the most important class that I've ever taken. The content is so relevant to our lives & Prof. Lee does an amazing job at explaining the key concepts of the course. He genuinely wants students to succeed in class & provides lots of detailed feedback & fun & easy extra credit opportunities to ensure we understand the material.
I took Prof. Lee's course in spring of 2020, just as the pandemic was accelerating and the BLM movement protests were starting to gain real steam and affect change in our society. Taking this course during this time period had a real impact on my development, Prof. Lee is passionate about social change and this course will stay with you for life.
To be honest, I took his class this past winter quarter and Professor Lee is pretty unorganized when teaching the class, he goes off topic a considerable amount of times. He is really condescending and you can't tell whether or not he actually cares about the subject he is teaching. Overall his class is some busy work with very few big projects
The class has all the elements of being a good online class. It seems like he's put in a lot of effort to structure his class to flow well. But his feedback demeans your efforts and desire to put in more. I feel he has an "I know more than you" attitude and comes off as pedantic. Maybe it's out of care for the students, but it falls flat frequently
He doesn't start grading until the end, he is a film major, (which we are constantly reminded of) he insists that he doesn't grade the final project as that (because we aren't film majors) but he does. I worked really hard in this course and in the last week my grade dropped from a 95 to a 88. Thankfully the ec helped.
Everyone chose this class with enthusiasm because we're excited to learn. However, the display of his modules, instructions, and criteria are impossible to navigate, or must I say, deeply unorganized. Not to mention the time limit on quizzes are much less than the number of questions. We learn from mistakes after a test, but even that is forbidden.
Canvas too hard to navigate. Accuses students of random accusations. Grades too slow. Random grading, no thinking. Do no teaching. He says read and expects you to understand, but don't teach when you make a mistake. Be better. A slacker. Judge opinions. Comments on homework are practically useless. Time-consuming. Honestly don't recommend it. Yikes
I took this class as a GE and not only was there a heavy workload but Professor Lee was not understanding, caring, or easy to work with during this pandemic. He is very harsh on his students and instead of trying to help us learn he is was very petty and unwelcoming. I wouldn't take this class if you care about your mental health & GPA.
Professor Ethan Lee's class is the epitome of the phrase "If there's a will, there's a way," by which I mean if you avoid doing something hard enough, you will be able to avoid doing it. Of course, I also mean that you may obtain a good grade by simply putting in the effort (obviously)doesn't have to be 100%, a solid 80% will do.
Grading scale is purely decided on how his day is going and randomly takes points off for nothing. All assignments are graded on correctness and is very blunt when answering questions/emails. Not very understanding but the class is also very easy and not a lot of work. A couple assignments due together at the end of the week and relatively light.
