Scheiner's the most available and helpful professor I've had so far. His quizzes and readings are kind of tough sometimes (the quizzes are 18% of your grade and only 4.5 pts each) but overall he's a great lecturer and super nice! I'd recommend him.
Scheiner is probably one of the best professor i've had at Davis. He is very intelligent and makes his lectures as interesting as he can and he is very approachable as well as helpful. I highly recommend his class esp. if you want to learn and have one of the best teachers at he same time.
soooooo cool! totally fun and loves his job! just a great teacher and person.
pretty clear, water in a diet coke bottle CLASSIC! he's nice and i learned a lot but the reading is a LOT!
The quizzes are hard, but he's super helpful in office hours. You would need to know at least the general points in the readings to do okay
Very interesting class taught by a very engaged and available professor.
Great professor, very enthusiastic about his subject. The quizzes suck, but will not overly hurt your grade. Highly reccomended!!!
great professor! very enthusiastic, funny and knowledgeable! plus he is hot!
Took this class in Winter 2006, it's the only class in UCD where I got 93% overall and it was only good for A-, beware of his hard grading policy. Despite that fact, the class was very interesting and very insightful. Scheiner is truly an expert in Japanese politics and he is very approachable and helpful in office hours. Highly recommended.
Heavy reading,he expect u to remember lots of content and the authors who founded the theories. Class material is rather uninteresting and extremely abstract. Exams are difficult due to time constraints,he wants very clear points from ur answer so you cant BS ur way thru it. I'd say avoid 140A unless u have a special interest in electoral systems.
Don't freak out by the excessive no. of his emails or his rather unusual sets of rules! definitely one of the best Poli Sci Professors in Davis. Available and helpful! His slides weren't that great but he's an amazing lecturer! definitely recommended!
He is really helpful and his class was pretty interesting. The only thing that is negative is that he did not show up to any of the exams. We has one test, one midterm, and one final and he did not attend class to either one. Also he sometimes puts on a video and leaves, but it only happened a few times. Other than that his class is pretty good.
Difficult class. Subject matter pretty boring though the section on genocide was good. Tests are extremely hard. He's not very helpful with finding ways to raise your grade. Offers extra credit, but it's hard to get. TA's are difficult graders. Overall, would not recommend this class unless it's required for your major.
He made the class harder than it had to be. Class was not mandatory but his lecture slides were virtually incomprehensible if you did not attend class. He has that aura of "I'm better than you, but I am going to try and relate to you all so I don't seem elitist". It was a pretty hard and boring class, I don't recommend it.
Great teacher. His lectures were a little unclear at times however, overall did a good job of teaching material. Kept lectures interesting/funny. Reading is only necessary if you want to get an A. Tests were fairly hard but mainly pull from lecture. He is INSANELY strict when it comes to following rules and formatting. Follow syllabus.
This was a very good class. Scheiner is one of the best teachers I've had. Through this class' lectures and discussions you will learn a lot about International Relations. Scheiner is a great lecturer too and I highly recommend him for this class.
Great Professor, very enthusiastic! Don't bother doing the readings, he goes over them in class extensively.
Dr. Scheiner is an amazing professor! He is very friendly, engages the entire class, tries to learn everybody's names, and has great TAs. He is very accessible through e-mail and office hours and is always ready with answers. His class is tough, but very interesting. He cares deeply about his studies and teaching and it shows. I recommend Scheiner!
He's a really great teacher, very passionate about the subject and really wants you to do well. He somehow was able to learn almost EVERY name (out of 200 students). Very interesting secion towards the end of class. Lot's of reading and memorizing, but definitely worth it. A great intro Poli Sci class!
Professor Scheiner has a real passion for the subject and does an amazing job teaching it. The amount of reading is relatively low and he discusses it in class. The tests are essay based but overall the grading was fair (I put in mild effort into the class and got a B+).
Professor Scheiner knows his material. Very helpful with questions and sorting out confussion, although there is quite a bit of reading he goes over the important parts in class. Great class, fun, only class I actually wanted to go to, definitely recommend taking in class it is an extremely well structured and interesting intro to politics
The average for the homework assignment was a D-, and I wrote 19 pages on the midterm, walked out thinking I had an A (I studied hard) only to receive a C-. He grades on a curve. The material is interesting but the grading was ridiculously hard. I walked away with a B- and count myself one of the lucky ones. Take it if you're confident...
This class was disappointing, especially after seeing the reviews. The grading was very harsh, and I also thought I did well on the midterm, only to get a C. Prof. Scheiner is a good, energetic lecturer, but the grading was whack.
The class was rly random. It was supposed to be about electoral systems but half the quarter was on genocide w/o any correlation to the subject of the course. Outside of that, hes a good lecturer, but his slides r purposefully meaningless to force u to go to class. Also, the grading is harsh and undeserved. U think u got an A when u get a B or C.
He's an amazing lecturer. He is very passionate about what he teaches. His grading was ridiculous. Small details matter a lot and is what he will deduct from your test scores if left out.
Amazing professor, best I have had at Davis thus far. His lectures are interesting-- he is clearly an expert on the subject.
Best professor I've had hands down. I enjoyed his lectures very much and he made JPN politics very understandable for someone who has never taken a polisci class before. Hard class, TA grades super harsh, but worth taking. Attend lecture, take good notes and be clear with word choices during testing and you'll be fine.
One of the best professors I've had ever. HARD class, but if you attend lectures and you put in some effort, you will be fine. I got a D on the midterm, due to getting names and dates mixed up. Studied my butt off for the final and ended up with a B in the class overall. TA grades super harsh though. Overall, this class was worth it!!
Scheiner is one of the best professors in the department. Is he easy? No. It wont be an easy A, but a decent pol student shouldn't have a problem getting a B. His lecture powerpoints are EXCELLENT study tools but require attendance (for notes on the slides. FFS print them out). Readings mostly irrelevant (just summarize-read). TAKE SCHEINER!
Okay Professor, very hard class, and TA Debra graded harsh. READ everything, came to class but still managed to barely pass.
BEST PROFESSOR AT UC DAVIS!
Easily one of the best poli sci professors at Davis. Name another professor who learns all the names of the students in a 120 student lecture
Scheiner is great, as long as you go to the lectures, you will know the material for tests. He answers all questions and is really clear. No textbooks were required, only a course pack and some online readings. LOVED that, and I learned a lot in this class. Its a lot to remember, but he does a good job teaching.
This class isn't all that tough. The teacher is enthusiastic but the hour and twenty minutes lecture is mind numbing. The TAs look to see if you're paying attention and that you're not on Facebook or on your phone. The power points contains mostly questions so you have to listen to how scheiner answers them during class.
Honestly the best professor I've ever had. He teaches this class so well, and makes it very interesting! The readings are actually interesting, but not even necessary. He goes through what he wants you to take away from the readings during lectures and if you attend all his lectures and your discussions, it's a guaranteed A.
Great professor! He's extremely helpful, but expects a LOT from his students. You better be prepared to work hard in that class to reap the benefits. Although my grade didn't show it, I took away a whole lot from this class and enjoyed learning from him. He also learns all the names of the students in class!
He's really nice and helpful, will def take more classes with him. the material was interesting, especially the genocide stuff.. really good class overall and not to hard to get an A or A- in.
Attendance is mandatory for "participation" credit. His lectures are a GREAT way to enhance what you've learned in the reading. He's a brilliant professor. I HIGHLY recommend taking him. He tells you what's going to be on the test [all essays]. If you attended lectures and read it's impossible to not earn a good grade.
Very interested in what he teaches. The material was extremely interesting and relevant, the class wasn't too hard but it also wasn't easy. The tests weren't too bad provided you studied and actually understood the material. I highly recommend to all POL majors, but maybe not for those uninterested in Political Science.
Scheiner is a fabulous professor: clear and concise, fun and enthusiastic guy, extremely approachable. You need to put work into his classes, but he's direct and upfront about assignments, tests, and expectations. Had no interest in Comp Electoral before, ended up being my favorite class.
Scheiner is an awesome professor. I entered his class loving comparative politics and now it's my main concentration. This also turned out to be my favorite class too and the material is pretty applicable outside the classroom. The material is very interesting and he is very willing to help students. I definitely recommend taking this class.
Attendance is MANDATORY. won't understand anything unless you go to class. Assignments/tests are easy and straightforward. Lectures are boring because Scheiner talks way too much just to fill the 1.5 hr. Overall easy class, but mostly boring.
The lectures for this class are extremely boring but you have to attend due to his slides only being outlines. He is very careful to make sure that everyone in the class understands. Work extremely hard on the homework! IT WILL HELP YOU! If this class wasn't so boring, I probably would have liked it more. However, I would recommend it.
Such a great professor. Took 140A with him and was impressed. Came back for 148B and was even more impressed. And Japan being his specialty makes it all the better because he speaks from experience. All in all, a great class and a good way to learn comparative politics. Very clear, assignments difficult, but great class and interesting topic.
Nice guy. Sometimes boring lectures. Slides are online. Grades exams hard. Mandatory discussions. Easy points to attend discussion, not braking rules on lectures. 2 easy papers.
SUCH a good professor. Approachable, lectures are clear and conversational, cares about his students and their understanding. Occasionally the lectures felt repetitive or dry, but cumulatively he managed to make everything relevant and connect the different ideas together.
Good instructor that is very clear and concise. Really interested in the material, and I will take more classes for him. He should have his TA's police his exams better, as I saw multiple people cheating.
His lectures are very interesting and he definitely knows what he is talking about. He is very straight to the point and gives good examples. Grading wise he does give 2 essays and a homework assignment to level off your grade. The midterm and final can be a bit tricky they are short answer and essay based. Overall I would recommend his class!
His lectures are extremely clear, and he is always willing to answer questions during lecture, but I feel he teaches to the lowest common denominator. The one midterm was almost verbatim from the study guide, I scored 101%. I also don't really understand how parts 1 and 3 of the course fit in with "Comparative Politics."
While Scheiner is a great lecturer, the presentation of the material can be very confusing, specially if you lack previous knowledge on the subject matter. Despite showing up to class everyday and taking notes, whenever I referred to the posted slide I would become more confused. I believe he does this on purpose, but is very counter productive.
not bad, not bad at all. in the beginning, he seemed a little intimidating but he actually loved communicating with students. in fact, he tried to memorize the names of all his students. impressive! study guide almost identical to the midterm. lectures not "mandatory" but go and take notes
the best professor I`ve ever had!! he is very organized and very knowledgeable. even though English was my second language I still did good in his class. he made sure students understood the subject and did his best to make it easier! he is the best ever! I recommend this class to everyone!!I love this guy he is my favorite at UC Davis!
Such a fantastic professor and cool guy!Class seems a little much at first but if you go to class you'll be good (he explicitly answers the questions in slides during class) exams were fair do your homework well because its just like tests.Set me up with a great POL foundation, glad to have taken POL2 with him
I loved this class. Prof. Scheiner changed the way I see the world and 6 years later, I still reflect upon what he taught me in my career in International Relations. He is brilliant, inspirational, and overall an amazing professor. He made my freshman year exponentially better. I looked forward to his class every day. Take this course!
Ethan Scheiner is a fantastic example of a good professor. He is extremely knowledgeable, extremely well prepared, and you really know what is expected of you. He posts the powerpoints online, but go to lecture because the powerpoints don't have a lot of key info. Reading is helpful, but not necessary if you go to lecture. No textbook, just reader.
By far one of the best professors I've ever had. His lectures are engaging and he's extremely knowledgable. He genuinely cares about his students and is always willing to answer questions. The homework is not difficult but it is still very helpful.
Scheiner is an EXCELLENT professor. He cares about the students, even tries to learn everyone's name. Topics were very interesting (although not always pertaining to comparative politics...) Not an easy A tho. He grades harshly. Be ready to memorize exactly what he says to know.
Best professor I've ever had. Not easy but worth it. Attend lectures and take notes, it will make the homework a lot easier.
Sheiner is BY FAR my favorite teacher I've had at Davis so far. He makes lectures interesting and everything covered is interesting and relevant. BE SURE YOU GO TO LECTURE. The content is very straightforward when he teaches, but missing class and trying to understand the material from his minimal slides is INCREDIBLY difficult.
Fun, applicable, and extremely interactive course. Love the TAs and the prof! Follow the studyguide, understand how scientific method applies to each article/research. Be comfortable with writing in class essays he focused more on learning the concepts and exchanging ideas with the students. Im a math major, still managed to do well and had fun
HANDS DOWN THE BEST PROFESSOR AT DAVIS! Some of your professors, have had HIM as their professor. He really knows what he's teaching and he is INCREDIBLY inspirational. TAKE HIM, TAKE HIM, TAKE HIM, TAKE HIM, TAKE HIM, TAKE HIM!! I also had him for POL140D.
Professor Scheiner is by far one of the best professors of political science at UCD. I first took his POL 2 course which ultimately made me decide to major in political science. I later took POl 140D in the summer and his POl 12 elective. He is really wants students to succeed. Take him! You'll learn so much and his teaching is phenomenal
By far the best professor! He's incredibly caring about students and lecture cannot be better. Since it's upper div, the materials were sort of tough, but he makes it really clear and welcomes students to ask questions. If you don't wanna enjoy learning, don't take him. If you wanna have good time on campus, take his class! The best recommendation.
Professor Scheiner is one of the best Political Science professors at Davis. I have taken 3 courses with them, and in every class he is straight forward about what he expects. His lectures are detailed and he thoroughly explains what to expect on the exam. He is always available outside of class and quickly responds to emails. Amazing Professor!
Scheiner is by far the BEST lecturer at Davis. If you miss lecture, his slides don't make any sense so I recommend going. He is so engaging and I loved him as a professor. However, the workload is not light. This class requires serious studying. I consider POL to be my favorite subject and I struggled. I would NOT recommend as an easy A course.
I took Professor Scheiner for POL12A and it was one of the most interesting classes I've taken at Davis. The entire class is only a midterm and a final but if you pay attention you'll do well. It's not hard to pay attention either as he's very passionate and his lectures are very interesting. Loved this class and recommended it to all my friends.
Really interesting class, he lectures for about an hour usually and then you watch clips from movies from the rest of the lecture. You have to go to lecture in order to get the details since he only uses bullet points for the slides. There is only one midterm and one final, both are essay based but if you go to lecture then you would pass.
Make sure to attend lectures. They're long and dense and his slides won't make sense without them. If you do attend lectures, you will have an amazing time in his class. The subject matter is extremely interesting and he does a great job teaching it. You can really tell he loves the topics he's teaching and wants you to learn. Only midterm + final!
Scheiner is by far the best professor and lecturer I had this quarter. His class was extremely convenient given the online class format, and the lectures were entertaining and intriguing. Super nice guy, your grade was determined by four essays, two midterm essays, and two final essays (timed). A great class, make sure to watch the lectures!
VERY RUDE! He doesn’t know how to organize canvas and he gets enraged if you choose to email at all. He chooses to ruin your gpa even if you’re above the .6% point for a rounding because he DOES NOT ROUND. Asking for a round is enough to lower your grade in his eyes, apparently. He seems nice until you witness how he grades YOU. DON’T TAKE!!
Don't take this class if you don't plan to keep up with the lectures. If you skip lectures you will not pass bc the grades are composed of primarily the midterm & final; both of which (if in person) are in class essays where you may be expected to memorize specific dates. The lectures were amazing/engaging, but lengthy. The grading scale is rough.
Great professor who is passionate about the subject. Lectures are extremely engaging and I never found myself bored in this class. Grade is comprised of 10% participation and 90% tests (in-class essays). However, the study guide outlines what is on the essays verbatim, so there are no surprises. Overall, amazing professor and fun class. Take him!
This mans is GOATED Would take this class again 100%
Professor Scheiner is an amazing professor. He actually loves his job and wants to help his students do well in his classes. His lectures are invested and interesting and he makes sure that he is available to help his students. Furthermore, he helps and understands the struggles students can have and deal with and he will work with you to help.
I had a hard time learning during the UC Strike but, this professor was considerate about the entire class and I had a very fun time learning the material in class.
He is a great professor, he is passionate about the class material and he wants the students in his class to succeed. I always enjoyed his lectures and was engaged. The class itself is not too hard but attending the lectures will help you. HI would 100% take another one of his classes
I took this class during the ongoing Union strike and Professor Scheiner made every possible accommodation short of not teaching to support the strike. His lectures are great you can tell how well this professor knows his subject. This class is worth taking just to expand your understanding of history! Would definitely take again.
Scheiner is extremely passionate not only about his lecture material but also about his students and their needs. He is very accommodating and cares that you really know the material and not just memorize it. I learned the most in this class about history and politics than in any of my other poli sci courses because he made it so interesting.
He's very passionate about the material, his lectures are interesting, and the class is so much fun. If you pay attention and put int he effort the class is great. If Prof Scheiner ran for president, I would vote for him with no hesitation.
Professor Scheiner is by far one of the best PoliSci professors at UC Davis. He is extremely passionate about what he teaches and seeks full understanding of everyone in class. Cannot stress enough how much you should attend his lectures as his slides are on the vague side. Definitely taking his POL 140A course next fall! Literally a walking W/GOAT
His class was my favorite I've ever taken at ucd
Class was very engaging. He was very passionate about the material and that showed in the lectures. Very flexible and works with you if you miss class. Shows that he cares for the students as well.
Professor Scheiner is a literal legend! His lectures are super engaging and he makes difficult subjects easy to understand. Very funny guy and he makes the effort to get to know all of his students. His study guides basically are the exams so study those well! Overall, really caring and would 100% take his class again!
Professor Scheiner is the most caring and engaged professor at Davis. He truly made an effort to learn everyone's names and to keep lectures engaging. He was responsive to the needs to students and went above and beyond to accommodate unforeseen circumstances.
Nice dad who learns everyone's names. Hard class if you don't have much prior electoral system knowledge. Must attend class to understand content - slides not descriptive. Midterm was nothing like study guide and alluded to lots of things to study that were not on exam. Midterm 35%, Final 55%, "Free points" 10%. On phone = 0 free points
Most beneficial POL course I've ever taken, also most challenging. This course specially is hard, his other classes are approachable. Amazing lecturer and most engaging/valuable info I've gained from a POL course. Two exams only. Live by his study guides for success and you'll do great. Changed how I view the world. Communicates well with students.
Scheiner is a great professor and I always look for his class when preparing my schedule. He makes me work more than other pol classes but the work is worth it. In every class I've taken, I've come out with skills and knowledge that have helped me in other classes. Give him a shot if you are an average to above-average student.
Professor Scheiner is a solid choice. His class is inspirational and easy to follow. He does a good job linking sports to politics. His exam is hard but as long as you take notes on the lectures you will do well. No phone in the classroom.
Easy Midterm and Final if you study and understand the material. In class essays for midterm and final make up 90% of grade.
Professor Scheiner's lectures were super engaging and had me really interested in the material. He cares a lot about the class and students. One midterm and one final, both are essay exams; as long as you study the sample exam questions, you should be fine. Make sure to take notes during lecture. Highly recommend this class; you will learn a lot!
Professor Scheiner makes lectures engaging and the material easy to grasp. He's flexible and accommodating, and cares about student success. Unstuck AI is a helpful tool for exam prep along with the study guides.
