It's impossible to say anything neg. about her. With that said it is a difficult class. She expects students to have a good understanding, but write notes and pay attention and u will do fine. Shes not looking to fail anyone just enlighten.

Dr. Lay is so sweet and so helpful. She makes English lit interesting, nice reading selections, knows her stuff really well. Grades more than fairly, papers and exams are relatively easy. Presents info very clearly. Highly recommend.

Dr. Lay is a great professor. She lets you re-submit your paper if you're not satisfied with your grade. Attendance is mandatory, but you can get away with not reading everything. I would take her again.

very nive very good teacher. Only suprising complaint is that she told me she would write a recommendation for me but never sent one. Kind of screwed me which is wierd because she really liked me. Just make sure if she writes it that she sends it for you.

I have taken mulitple classes with Dr. Lay. She is, by far, the kindest woman and professor I've ever encountered. Be willing to do you part, and if you do, she will definitely meet you half way.Don't leave Hofstra w/out meeting her.

The nicest teacher I ever met at Hofstra, she is very generous with extra credit and re-writes...easy class if you work hard...got an A in both of the classes I took with her because it's impossiable not to if you keep re-writing your essays until they turn into A's and do some extra credits...one of the best professors at Hofstra bar none.

Being Part of the fairy tale cluster she had to teach this comp class different than normal. All in all a great teacher, helpful and open to meet with you if you have a problem. She's new to BlackBoard and so the assignments were all screwed up, however she adjusted to help us and understood the trouble it caused. Fun to talk to about anything.

Being part FYC Fairy tale cluster this class was aided by its small size. She emphasized the point of the course is to write great papers and gave the option to re-write them until that high standard was met. She use blackboard to assign more writing but used in class at all. She is one of the BEST! at Hofstra, Highly Recommend.

I'm agreeing with most people here, Dr. Ethna Lay is one of the best English teachers I've ever had because she doesn't put down students in the class for trying. Grades wise, she's very lenient, but most of all, she will give you the time to discuss problems because she cares about you, and that's important. As of english, she's good at explaining

Dr. Lay is an awesome professor to have especially for first semester freshman! While there are many assignments, she is flexible and always lets you resubmit a paper. She is definitely one of my favorite people at Hofstra so far. take her if you can;you will learn so much about the art of writing and gain a bond with your professor in the process!

This woman is AWESOME!! I hated writing until I took her class. Although there is a good amount of work, shes incredibly lenient and lets you rewrite anything. She's not the best with keeping track of things but she's realllly helpful. I'm taking her again this semester.

Pretty simple teacher. Possibly one of the best English teachers at Hofstra. Try and get her for any English related course.

Prof. Lay was Amazing!!! I loved her! In the beginning she was a little hard, but then later on in a conference she explained her reasoning. She is very approachable, and almost always returns emails. Also, definitely take advantage of the peer tutoring sessions they are a HUGE help

Very nice lady! Friendly and easy to talk to. Expect a lot of papers possibly more than other English teachers. Also a lot of reading involved - dense material. Fair grader overall. If you have a problem just see her about it.

She is a must take for all English students. She is very smart on the subject and likes to help people do the best they can. She does tend to give more work than others but it sounds worse than it is. She is one of the few nicest, mother-like profs on campus. Take her!

I am taking her again this semester. She is an amazing professor! She does tend to give out a work but its nothing too bad! She always accepts late work and is one of the funniest, sweetest ladies ever! the biggest mistake would be not to take her!

Professor Lay is true awesome. She is different than most professors in the sense that she doesn't expect perfection. If anything, she doesn't want you to be perfect, but she makes you strive to be the absolute best that you can be. She is so fun and down to earth and can easily relate to any problems that you have. Take Lay!

Dr. Lay made me actually enjoy writing. I had her for WSC 1, which I thought would be my least interesting class but I actually enjoyed going. She is a little crazy but in a good way and is a very fair grader. Very easy and interesting class.

WSC. Shes enthusiastic, knowledgeable and unique. Great teacher, makes the class fun even though it was just mandatory.

Dr. Lay makes the most boring class at least a little interesting. She's a sweetheart and cares deeply about her students. There are papers but most of the work is done through blogging. It's a really easy class and she knows it. She makes it impossible NOT to get an A, you have infinite rewrites if necessary.

She's nice, her class is pretty easy, and she corrects your papers so you can resubmit them. The only thing is that I was sometimes not sure about what we were supposed to do on the assignments.

Professor Lay is meant for abstract people like herself. She is inspirational in the ways that she teaches vague concepts in weird ways, and she makes every class hilarious. She can be a bit confusing for people who do not understand sarcasm and her weird techniques but the plus side is that her class is always interesting.

Love love love Dr. Lay! Took her for intro and then again for advanced. She's sometimes unclear, but I have definitely become more confident and improved in my writing because of her.

Probably the nicest professor I've had at Hofstra. Her class is very laid back and slow paced and she will almost always offer extensions on assignments if you come to her asking for one, but beware she is a bit of a tough grader on essays and other written assignments.

Lay is a great professor. She is such a sweet and charismatic lady that cares so much about her students. All you need to do is participate and write the essays. She offers extra credit and will provide feedback and a certain amount of rewrites for her papers. She will offer different styles of papers such as a comparison or scientific. NO Tests!

LOVE her. People like to take advantage of the fact that she makes assignments easier than they need be (like allowing rewrites and pushing due dates) but it's only because she's a genuinely nice person. You can tell she just wants her students to learn and it's less about making them conform to her style. If you have a chance to take her class,do.

Very sweet lady. Few assignments out of class but make sure to fulfill requirements as she is somewhat of a tough grader. No tests. Definitely take her if you have the option to.

She's pretty lenient and laid-back. She usually grades tough on essays but she allows you to re-write. Her in-class assignments are usually very easy and she gives full points just for showing up. Her grading policy is a little complicated and it's hard to know your final grade until the end of the semester. No midterm or tests, just a final essay.

Dr. Lay is one of the most caring professors I've taken at Hofstra. She will work with you and genuinely wants you to do well. I took this as a mid -semester course. Quizzes every class, you have to make a blog and do 4 posts, and a 200 question final. It's a lot of work, but if you manage your time and get it done you will get the deserved A.

Dr. Lay is understanding and helpful overall. She really does want her students to succeed. While the workload was pretty intense (7 papers, an annotation project, and a written final) Dr. Lay made it manageable by shifting deadlines and allowing extra credit. She is super nice & I would take again!

Professor Lay is an amazing and caring person, she is willing to have an conversation at anytime with you and is very accessible. Beware there are alot of papers and the work load could get kind of insane if you do decide to take her. If you are a freshmen,honestly there is no better teacher to take cause she will ease you into the college life.

Dr. Lay is such a sweetheart! She made writing super fun for me, and her feedback is clear and helpful. If you don't like writing, don't take her class, as it will be writing intensive. But she really does know her stuff, and is always willing to help her students.

Dr. Lay is an extremely sweet teacher. I had her for HUHC 13 and it was a good exprience. There are few major assignments. She is very approachable and understanding.

One of my favorite professors ever. She's so sweet and funny and will always make the best effort to help you succeed. Assignments can be a bit tedious but they were manageable and she is always open to questions/offering help. Exams can be difficult but fair and she always reviews beforehand. Class itself is also engaging, take her if you can!!

Although there were lots of little easy quizzes, this class was very easy and the professor made it even better. She's very nice and feels like you're talking with a friend. Loved her so much!
