What Students Say
“the professor has a heavy accent which makes it hard to understand her sometimes, she is generally late to her class 3/4 about 5 minutes late every single time (have been counting how many times she has been actually late this semester and it has been over 6 times already) , literally just reads of the power-point slides behind, pretty bad teacher”
SOC101 - 1.0 rating“Have had MUCH better 101 professors who don't just read off the power-point slides behind them and actually engage the class in any classroom discussion, had her last semester, I noticed she would always be late to class about 3-5 minutes every single time, what else, if your even 1 minute late to her class, it is deducted points for you,”

Professor Donnelly is well loved by my entire class. She's a sweet woman and more than capable teacher. Her class is always fun. Sometimes, she can be difficult to understand, considering her Japanese accent, but she speaks english very well. I would definitely recommend her classes to anyone who has to take Sociology 101 or Japanese.
The cutest teacher ever! She is so sweet and makes learning Japanese very interesting and fun! In Japanese she only assigns homework once in a blue moon, but has weekly small vocab exams. She makes learning Japanese entertaining and you learn about the culture too. I recommend taking this class with her, if you are willing to do some work.
NOT A GOOD SOCIOLOGY TEACHER! speaks english but not well. nothing she teaches in class is on the tests hard grader and very obsessed with japanese culture always watching japanese movies or talking about the culture but it has NOTHING to do with whats on tests. avoid this professor the class is torture
Overall, a great teacher, and makes learning Japanese as fun as she can. My only very small and minor complaint is that sometimes she really breezes through a LOT of material in one class, so it's a lot to take in, but that means nothing more than a little bit more studying. Overall, I would recommend her.
Took the online class and it was great. Very easy but many papers to write. But professor donnelly graded well as long as every question was answered in the papers. Would definitely recommend taking this class with this professor.Loved the fact that we were able to work ahead and submit work
Not easy, but not impossible. She speaks english very well. I did not have a problem understanding her. Her lectures are useless, everything you need for tests is in the book. There were 4 papers. Each test is work 20% and papers add up to another 20%. You have to put a little extra effort in. Not impossible, just not the best. I got a B.
Excellent teacher, very passionate about sociology. Has a thick Japanese accent, but once you get used to it she is easy to understand. Really very sweet and helpful; if you pay attention in class and do the reading you'll do fine.
this is a very thorough, methodical and passionate professor of japanese. she won't give you any excuses, don't give her any! we didn't play catch-up at the end of the semester, we actually finished with time to spare just as planned. we learned a lot, and it was really fun! i speak on behalf of the boys, who definitely would give her a pepper.
I took her online class. She is a good teacher, grades fairly and quickly. Kind of unclear on some papers about what to write about...there are alot of papers but they are all two pagers.just do the work and participate in the discussions.
Online version of class. Program was well organized. Prof. Donnelly is very involved in the discussions and very quick to respond to questions. Discussion and assignment workloads were evenly spaced, however the online exams were so focused on minutia that they were not really relevent. I would recommend removing them. Fair grader, recommend.
Worst teacher I've ever had she's very unfair with her grades and papers and does not review for any test ..never take her
Do not take this class unless you have the time to read the text. The text ask very for very specific details from the test. All test are mult. choice but answers are very similar. Hard grader when it comes to papers. If you miss just point on paper your grade will suffer a lot.
Fair, heavy accent but understandable. Sure bet for soc101. It was a requirment for me and i got through it fine.
I'm taking her for an on-line course. She is helpful when you have questions, and is a fair grader. Quizzes are timed, but you can have the textbook in front of you.Discussions are fair, and the written assignments are only two pages each. A very fair grader, in my opinion. Hard not to get at least a B.
Amazing teacher. Helped me learn a difficult language in a fast, fun, helpful atmosphere. One of the best teachers I've ever had. Keeps it real and has hooked me up on many occasions.
She's a really nice women, but she's tough as heck for such a simple subject. Her tests are really hard and require much studying!! If ur late it affects ur participation percentage by alot!! She's also a tough grader
One of the worst teacher!I never recommend her to anybody. And It was hard to understand her English.
Took her for SOC 101 online course. She was very helpful, and the course was fairly easy. As with any online courses, there are a lot of discussions and writing assignments but she lets you know exactly what needs to be on the short papers. Highly recommend!
She is a really great teacher. I have taken her twice, once for sociology 101 and once for Japanese 101. Like others have stated she does have a Japanese accent but it's not that crazy. I understood her just fine. She has a great funny personality and gives fairly easy tests. If you take notes and do homework you should get an A in the class.
She's a really nice lady, I took her SOC 101 class, participationattendance are very important. Her accent wasnt too bad. Textbook is a must in order to pass!
She's nice, participation is a must! Must have the textbook in order to pass and attendance is also very important. Her accent isn't so bad, her lectures are pretty easy to understand and the overall difficulty isn't bad.
great class to take online. must do discussions, and she is a bit of a challenging grader when it comes to essay assignments. overall great experience!!
I took her SOC 101 online class. You'll need the textbook to understand topics, quizzes and discussions. She will definitely help you when it comes to writing assignments and also lets you re-write one at the end of the semester, which is optional. Need to be a critical thinker for the discussion topics! Overall - great professor.
She's a nice person, but her grading is tough especially on her essays. Her essay assignments aren't clear on what she's expecting , her test are pretty hard and expect a quiz every week online. Definitely not an easy A
the professor has a heavy accent which makes it hard to understand her sometimes, she is generally late to her class 3/4 about 5 minutes late every single time (have been counting how many times she has been actually late this semester and it has been over 6 times already) , literally just reads of the power-point slides behind, pretty bad teacher
Poor essay instructions with bad grammar leads to lower grades because you "tried" following what the instructions says menawhile they are not even clear or in proper english with good grammar. Is typically late to class every single time about 5 minutes (at least for my 2:00 class I have with her), just reads right off the PP slides behind her.
Sharing my voice here alongside with my friends who have also had her, assignment instructions are poor and not clear, the instructions have bad grammar in them itself and it is frustrating when she had deducted points from the assignment because "I didn't follow instructions completly". Has a heavy accent when lecturing, reads off PP slides behind
Nice lady, boring teacher, has a heavy accent, reads directly off the PowerPoint slides from behind her, doesn't engage the class in any classroom discussions ever, she is quite a bit monotone as well and just "trots" through the lecture, also she is late to her own class fairly often(about 5 minutes every time). Have had much better 101 teachers.
Have had MUCH better 101 professors who don't just read off the power-point slides behind them and actually engage the class in any classroom discussion, had her last semester, I noticed she would always be late to class about 3-5 minutes every single time, what else, if your even 1 minute late to her class, it is deducted points for you,
Like others have said here, she grades her papers unfairly, in which the instructions on her assignments are not even in proper English and has poor grammar so the instructions are not even clear, she never went over review stuff in class prior to quizzes and exams, only reads off the PowerPoint slides behind her, she just goes through the motions
The worst 101 teacher I have had? Do yourself a big favor for the future and just pick another professor for Sociology 101 if you need to.
Speaks english but not very well and with a heavy accent. Another one of those teachers who just reads directly from their own plain PowerPoint slides and never has the classroom engaged in any discussions ever, no wonder why I see people asleep and on their phones in my class every time I am there, the class is NOT engaged and she is boring.
Suffolk offers MUCH better 101 professors then Professor Donnelly for SOC101, do yourself a favor and choose any other SOC professor but this one.
Joke of a class in the way it is taught and handled by the professor.
Take a different SOC101 class, do your future self a favor and get a teacher who actually wants to teach their students passionately.
This teacher grades unfairly. I put a lot of effort into the assignments only to have points deducted for reasons I still do not understand. I do not suggest this professor and I regret taking her. I hope this helps someone.
Would not recommend. Gives you a rubric for every written assignment, and even though you follow her rubric, she still manages to tell you that you are incorrect. Directions often unclear. Her extra credits are only 1pt each, not worth it. Accent is tough but understandable. Takes all class to cover maybe 20 slides. Overall very nice woman though.
So sweet but not willing to help her students. Cancels office hours often, unfair grading policies! She gives you review sheets and then the test has nothing to do with anything you learned in class or the review sheet. I studied all the material from the power points and everything she stressed and nothing was on the tests.
Please do not take. Doesnt speak english. I promise you will regret having her as your teacher
Dropped the first day... I had no idea what she was saying. How can you learn when you can't understand her?
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF! Her grading policies make absolutely no sense! The material that she stresses will be on the test, is not. The test material is completely irrelevant to what she "teaches" in class. She supplies a grading rubric for her papers, but doesn't even follow it herself. Seems as if she doesn't want to help her students pass!
She's a great professor! Id you just do the hw and study, you will pass! Its difficult because it's a whole new language but overall a great class!
Took her online class and it was the worst thing I could have ever done. Her grading rubric makes 0 sense and she doesn't follow it at all. I received a C in the class and I will be retaking WITH ANOTHER PROFESSOR for a better grade.
Good teacher, relatively fun class. Lot's of group activities and speaking. But the class is very hard and requires a ton of studying, if you fall behind at all you are screwed.
I took her for soc101/203 both online. She is a tough grader, gives lots of reading, quizzes, tests, and papers. She is the type of teacher to push you to do better through pressure and high stsndards. If you are looking to learn and get smarter, take her. If you are looking to eek by her class she will eat you alive. I really enjoyed my time in SOC
I worked my butt off, did all my work and she grades everything way to hard. I answered all the questions in each assignment and it wasn't good enough. She doesn't go based on the rubric she gives you. DO yourself a favor do not take her. Take the class in school.
I had a difficult beggining and I lost some points, but this Professor gives students a chance to get extra points and if you show you care and you are passionate about the sociological issues you can get A no problem. I would have a class with this Professor again.
Donnelly-sensei is a caring, wonderful teacher, who tries her best to make Japanese fun and easy to learn. She enjoys it when people try their best and give it their all! Very laid back and open hearted; one of the nicest people I've ever met. Make sure to study and do homework every day if you are serious about Japanese!
Great professor. Very nice and explains everything well. Has a little bit of an accent but still easily understandable. Easy A if you do your homework and do well on the quizzes.
I took her online class and it was the worst. She is an extremely tough grader. No matter what you do in her class she was always find a way to not give you full credit. I felt confident with many of the assignments I handed to her, to only get half credit and a grading rubric that makes no sense. Don't take her class!!
took an online class. All assignments were straightforward. As long as you did the reading you will do well on the quiz (which you get 2 tries on) Would definitely recommend for anyone looking to take an online class.
Took her online, she is a very tough grader. You have to be involved and if you put the effort into your assignments you will earn a grade you deserve.
Professor Donnelly is so sweet. She's an amazing teacher who really cares about her students and their learning. I took her class twice (101 & 102). She is straightforward about the amount of work and you really need to put the time in but that's the same for any language. She gives plenty of opportunities for extra credit.
Professor Donnelly is not the professor you want to take for freshman seminar (COL101) She gives so many assignments you won't have time to work on your core classes. We go to several lectures about various nonsense and have to write a paper for each, while I have papers due in real classes. Would not recommend.
Dont be discouraged by her reviews, if you want to take Japanese with this professor 100% do it!!! She teaches about Japanese culture in addition to the language, and shes native to Japan so you know its legit. As long as you put in time to study, its an easy A and she is so sweet, easily one of the best professors Ive had at Suffolk.
This professor barely taught anything in class, canceled at least 5 times. The class would actually be pretty easy if she actually taught us something. Tough grader on "journal assignments" we had i was given horrible grades on when i put in great amounts of effort.
Took the online class. Yes it is a lot of reading & you have to write many journals & discussions but if you read the textbook it's not too difficult. Participation matters & you must stay involved & put the effort in to get the grade you deserve. Was willing to work w/ me & give extensions when I had family problems. Overall I recommend.
You do need to show up for class as she deducts points from your final grade for not coming. She has a very thick japanese accent and speaks fast. The class had some useful content but most of it is useless. Every week a jounral is due on pointless topics. Theyre easy but extremely boring. Definitely would avoid this professor.
This teacher kills you with work . Its pointless to do the extra credit assignments because they wont count . This teacher is a tough grader . Do your self a favor and run. Do not take this teacher unless you want a low grade you been warned
This professor is horrible, worked really hard on every paper and journal but somehow always got a low score. I always checked my grammar and spelling. She said I wasn't specific enough on many things when in fact I was completely specific with my essays and journals.
Estuko is an amazing Japanese professor! While she might not have the best reviews because of her Sociology courses she is amazing at Japanese. Being a native she helps students understand the nuance of Japanese while also providing a strong foundation for vocabulary.
Lets just say she gives a lot of failing grades. Horrible!! She's very unclear. Even if you do everything she asks you will fail. Rough grader. Nothing you do will make her happy. I thought of myself as one of the best students in the class and still failed. Don't bother doing extra credit she won't give you much points. Waste of time!
A lot of work but fair. The class was an online summer class. Expect to work 4 days a week at least. Seemed overwhelming at first but once the class got going the assignments were similar each week. Quizzes were based on text, multiple choice, and you could take them twice. Final was tougher than expected. 2 extra credit assignments at the end.
I took her online sociology class. She is a tough grader but it made me want to try harder on the next assignment which I think is her goal. I got really good grades on most of the assignments (usually full credit) and the quizzes were easy as long as you do the readings. If I didnt get full credit she explained why and was very helpful.
Participation and attendance matter but I loved being in her class. Even though it was COL101 she made the class fun and interesting while providing insight into a range of topics that excelled outside the curriculum.
I'm taking this class online due to covid, I thought it would just be an easy class to pass. I did not do as good as I thought because i was all online, no zoom or nothing just had to do the work. There was so much homework and this professor is tough! Easily one of the worst professor I've had so far.
This professor is by far the worst I ever had if shes teaching another class even slightly better she should do that and avoid sociology. Its to the point where I hope she reads this and knows that. Shes very subjective and will want your options on stuff thats unrelated to the course. I would avoid this professor she dont teach.
Read, read, read. Assignments are VERY wordy and confusing but she always makes herself accessible to answer questions. A lot of work, but I would take her again.
I had this professor for college seminar, which was fully online. The assignments were not too hard and she was always very quick to respond to emails. Do the assignments and the class is an easy A.
You're definitely going to have to apply yourself but if Sociology is your major, I one hundred percent recommend taking a class with Prof. Donnelly. You'll be able to watch yourself grow in your writing and applications of the course material. I would definitely take her again. Lots of extra credit, be prepared to work! She will help if needed!
I am currently enrolled in this professors sociology class and unless you want to get into psychology I wouldn't suggest taking this professor. The amount of work she requires every week is actually crazy, 500 word papers and 200 word responses due every week and quizzes on top of that. like we aren't trying to put a man on the moon lady!!
I love professor Donnelly!! Not a lot of work, only 2 journals that are fairly easy and reading the textbook along with online quizzes following the reading but they are open book, also super easy. She gives great lectures and is just lovely, just make sure you are not on your phone or laptop and are engaged. Amazing class
Great Professor, would recommend taking her! Is kind and supportive and really cares deeply about topics that are important ini todays changing society.
Sensei Donnellly is extremely kind and make learning Japanese really easy. Expect to take an easy test every week.
Basically all of your grade comes from quizzes and stupid discussion assignments that are a waste of your time. Demands you read the book chapters and then gives you useless powerpoints to go along. Half the questions on the quizzes don't even come from the powerpoint content. Also marks questions wrong even with answer coming directly from text.
Literally the worst professor. I'm a student who does my work and submits things early. This professor seems to think her class is the only one students take with the amount of work she assigns. I'm not reading an entire chapter, 40 page powerpoints, 2+ additional online articles, and then listening to a 40+ minute podcast and writing about it. BS
Ridiculous amounts of work for an entry-level course. She basically expects you to eat, breathe, sleep sociology. This level 100 class had 2x the work some of my STEM classes require, which is beyond ridiculous. The concepts in this course are relatively simple, but Professor Donnelly goes out of her way to make the class a nuisance.
Dr. Donnelly was certainly the best professor I've taken for a language. Japanese was easier than my Spanish classes. Sensei makes the class very easy to follow. Go to the Language learning center!!! Extra credit on your final grade for attending! Plus, it really helps! Take this class if you're remotely thinking of taking it!
A lot of homework, she takes points for everything.
this teacher kills you with work it's pointless to do the extra credit assignments because they won't count this teacher is a tough grader her grading rubric makes no sense don't take her class if you want a failing grade
Test were very hard and she talked super fast and hard to understand. Expects us to know everything about sociology even as a intro course
Literally the worst professor I have ever had. Not only is it hard to understand her due to a language barrier, to say she wants to make every student miserable is an understatement.
Professor Donnelly is a sigma, the negative reviews are sounding pretty beta... Yikes. But it's Japanese, if you thought it was gonna be easy you probably already know Japanese. It's a hard class taught in the easiest way possible. Prof. Donnelly is engaging, her presentations are fun! I'm definitely taking JPN 102.
Be weary. She's a tough grader, expects so much out of you for just a short semester, will grade your stuff great one time then the next questions the authenticity of your work. I've never used AI. My work is genuine and straight from me. I am a full time student and my other 2 classes were a piece of cake. They were easy, nice, helpful. She's not.
Etsuko is not a good sociology professor. She is a tough grader; you are expected to have a PhD in sociology in this class. If you have a life and need to worry about other things outside this class, do not take this during the summer. She expects her students to devote their souls to her work. Calm down, Etsuko, we don't want to be sociologists.
Professor wants you to put everything aside and worry about class. A bit of a heavy accent that makes it harder to understand. Has gone off on the class for no reason, threatining to leave because "There was too much noise" when there wasnt anything going on. That shuld speak for itself. Means well but also a bit of a pain.
Professor Donnelly is, hands down, the best language teacher I've ever had. Her class was clear, engaging, and focused on real-world use rather than just following a textbook. The homework load was heavy, but it provided excellent practice and really helped reinforce the material. I'm absolutely planning to take her 102 class and independent study!
I live by the saying "you never know what someone else is going through." I don't know if she's going through something personal in her life but she takes out all her anger on the students. To say she makes us uncomfortable and unwanted is an understatement. Miserable people love to make other people suffer as well and she makes that apparent.
You are expected to buy the textbook, but her lecture covers the reading — therefore, it's really only used as a reference. Perhaps it's a cultural misunderstanding, but I feel as though her approach isn't necessarily aimed towards the students success. SCCC is usually chosen for it's flexibility and understanding — she lacks both.
my class got changed to this prof, went from having a discussion post w/ simple essay due every 2 weeks to all of the sudden 10 assignments due in 2 days, assignments meaning bunch of videos w/ a quiz and some MindTap exercise w/ a new textbook, dropped the class didn't bother trying. discussion posts really specific and detailed from what i saw.
Original prof. dropped this class & Dr.Donnelly picked it up. Honestly the workload she requires issues insane considering this is only a prerequisite class for most. It is disheartening to get a professor like this who disregards their students workload from other classes or just daily lives and piles on 7+ assignments each week.
A very fair professor, but if you are struggling with the amount of homework assignments and quizzes that pile up every week, it's hard to catch up
Im not too sure why her ratings are bad, In my class she seems very outgoing and nice. You are required to have a textbook for homeworks, I can't really think of anything bad she has done? She likes interacting with the class, she does have weekly quizzes which might be a bit difficult for people, nice professor though
Her lectures are AMAZING, she made it so engaging and fun, I know nothing about sociology before this, she made me fell in love with the subject, an amazing teacher, her tests are simple and straight forward if you read and pay attention in class, she also gives quite a lot of extra credits, genuinely one of the greatest teacher I ever had! 10/10.
