I did not like this class! He took another teacher's place, and he hadn't even taught for the past 10 yrs! He taught it like it was a 400 or 500 level course! Not good for non-Philosophy majors.
Most brilliant, most engaging professor I've had in my life.
I agree - too in-depth, over the top for intro course or non-philosophy majors. I found it very frustrating and confusing. I'm not sure I understand any more now than I did before taking it.
The man's a bloody genius. I've never had to think in a class quite like that before.
This class is really good and he really makes Logic fun!
He is a great teacher, always eager to help and truly interested in all of the details of the material. He's also very concerned with fairness. It's not an easy class, you have to work through problems on your own to understand.
very demanding, if your a philosophy major he's wonderful. If you are not a major you may want to look somewhere else, since he is very demanding, but an excellent professor.

I was in the same class as another poster (Mills took over for another professor), but I loved it. Mills is not an easy professor, which will gather enough negative reviews, but if you're willing to work he's amazing. One of the best professors I've ever had.
This class was very demanding, but worth every bit of it. Take Mills if you want to really learn something and put in the required work. If you want an easy A, go elsewhere (I'm not a philosophy major btw, but loved the class anyhow).
Gene is the single most amazingly brilliant professor to grace the uneven brick that is VCU. He's awesome! :)
very good grading policy, allows for human error
horrible, that class was soooo hard!
oy vey. i have all As in five other classes and barely a D in his. he is way too hypothetical and you can never get a straight answer out of the man. his tests are 'either you know it or you don't' and mostly a ginormous essay about something you can't explain. save yourself and take someone else for philosophy

This class is not an easy grade, but he warned us at the beginning of the semester that it would be tough. Overall, he was pretty good, and I ended up finding the subject very interesting. This class will definitley give your brain a workout!
At first I thought I would never pass his class, but I ended up with a solid B. His class is definitely a challenge; I found it usefull to have a glass or two of wine while doing his homework. If you think too hard you will not be successfull in his class. It is common sense really. He was incredibely funny and I always had fun in his lectures.
Gene is a great professor! Metaphysics ain't easy though...
I really enjoyed this class. Dr. Mills is very knowledgeable, and runs a very 'open' class. As with any philosophy class, the material can be a bit difficult to comprehend, but it is not impossible. His grading policy is very generous, and he is very willing to help. Attendance is not mandatory, but he gives pop quizzes throughout the course.
Eugene Mills is an extraordinarily patient man and will explain things to you even if you're a complete idiot. He is witty and absolutely brilliant. He loves it when students come to his office for extra help and will really challenge you. It's not an easy A by any means, but you will actually learn something. (And he's SMOKING HOT.)
He was the best philosophy teacher I have ever had. He is very funny and keep me laughing. This class is harder than most but very enjoyable!!!
very hard honors class. you read and come to class and talk very vaguely about it and there is a midterm and final that seem to be very hard ( havent taken them yet) basically if you dont have to take this class, don't take it. take basket weeving or something else instead
Funny guy. Made me laugh. Great examples to explain things. But notes were very disorganized & a bit confusing. Rummaged through things too quick. Tests were extremely difficult, impossible to pass. Ended up withdrawing before the end of the semester.
Gene is the most advanced philosopher I've met, and is also probably the most intelligent professor at VCU. He teaches as if we were at Harvard, but so long as you show that you did the work (have legitimate misunderstandings rather than just BS) he is VERY forgiving grading-wise. And he WILL know if you BS!!! Don't take unless you do the work!!!
this course with him is ridiculous. The test are subjective (meaning multiple choice). How can PHILOSOPHY of ETHICS be multiple choice no answer is correct so why must we choose!??? It should be short answer, but he is too lazy to read essays due to class size so we all must think like a lib, which I am so not. So if you are republican WATCH OUT!!!
Dr. Mills is the best. I was worried walking into a philosophy class that my professor would be very abstract and have his head in the clouds, but Dr. Mills is very down-to-earth, laid-back and personable. He's approachable and easy to get help from during class or office hours. Philosophy isn't my passion, but I really enjoyed this class.
Oh goodness Dr. Mills! Most confusing class I've ever been in. Everyone fails the tests, everyone. Get a 60 and you should feel good (even though they're online tests). Go to class, go to office hours, ask questions, do the practice tests.
Professor Mills is awesome. I've never been interested in Philosophy, and I'm still not, but he manages to pass close to three hours every week without making me want to kill myself. He's also pretty funny.
He doesn't seem to actually teach, but he just goes on with the class flow and goes with whatever other students say. meaning there is no objectives and there is just no way to study for the exam. i found this class so hard even though i went to every class.. it's very disappointing.
Accept this: If you take his class you will be bored, fail everything, receive a huge curve, and have learned nothing.
Follow along in class, do the reading, take notes and study them, reference them if necessary on his online tests, and you should do okay. The tests seem like they will be the death of you, but my highest grade amongst all of my exams was an 80 (lowest was a 55) and I pulled an A with his MASSIVE curve.
This honors class is EXTREMELY hard, much too hard for a required core class. Lots of incomprehensible reading, really hard tests and quizzes, not a large curve. I would recommend trying to find another professor for this class, unless you really enjoy Philosophy and are willing to work very hard.
The class has the potential to learn a lot. There are few actual concrete concepts. He basically uses the class as a conversation which gets confusing when people dont grasp immediately bc the questioning makes you 2nd guess yourself. Our class average for the tests have been roughly 55-60% so he applies a HUGE curve to make himself look better!
Mills is a very well spoken professor. I suggest you take a logic class before you take this class though, because it will help you tons! DO THE READINGS! DO THE REVIEW QUESTIONS FROM THE TEXTBOOK! STUDY and HIGHLIGHT notes from class a few nights in a row before his tests and you shouldo fine.Curves tests. Likes questions, but think before u speak.
Gene is a hilarious and highly intelligent guy. He's so smart though that I think it's hard for him to grasp why students have problems learning. Study and attend class and you'll be fine because he WILL curve everything. Just don't dismiss his in-class conversations because they will be relevant. He also has a great beard. What a silver fox.
Professor Mills is a sweet heart. He makes the class so much fun. He is a wonderful professor. The concepts are hard for some people to grasp. I would recommend doing logic problems and analyzing arguments you read in an article. It will help you out, and do the readings.
Teaches a though-provoking class. He's an incredibly smart and very attractive for an older man. He really cares about what he's doing and loves engaging with students. Attendance is not mandatory but I'd suggest it. This class is not an easy A, so it's the perfect class if you really want to think. Otherwise I'd say go elsewhere.
If you're interested in philosophy, this is the professor for you! If you're taking this just because it's required of you and you're not interested, I'd go elsewhere. I loved Gene though! He's so smart and funny and makes you work. PS: There will be a curve!
Would take again.
Take only if you are interested in what he's teaching and are prepared to do work.
Professor Mills is an incredibly smart & helpful man. Whatever your opinion is, he doesn't judge. This class is full of thinking and logic. Do the readings, atleast twice. Quizzes are T/F & can be tricky. Also take notes, they definitely will help you study for the exams. This class was HARD but my thinking about ethics improved.
Prof. Mills is a very smart man, well endowed in philosophy. But I feel bad for you if you have to take this class. Readings are very time consuming. Incomprehensible, yet you have plenty of op quizzes to keep you on your toes. Everyone I know in this class is just nothing but confused. I'm one out of 7 that has an A..... barely
Eve though I may get a B in this class I found Dr. mills to be one of the best professors at vcu. I thoroughly enjoyed the class and the amount of time he spent helping me.
Very challenging Honors course for multiple reasons: 1) the material/readings are way too abstract and absurd at times 2) class is disorganized, with random tangents from students 3) Quizzes/tests are tricky, and the written assignments are hit or miss. Dr. Mills curves quite generously though based on how the class performs overall!
This class was unorganized and very difficult. There is no structure to the lectures and any discussion with Mills turns into an argument. I wouldn't encourage anyone to take this class unless you have an intense interest in philosophy or enjoy sitting through hours of unorganized lectures. I've made it to every class and am barely pulling a C.
Contrary to a lot of other students, I really loved Professor Mills. The class itself is pretty difficult, don't get me wrong, but he's a really funny guy and probably one of the smartest professors I've ever had. You can tell he really loves philosophy. He's a little unclear at first but genuinely wants his students to do well.
Super unorganized!!!! Contradicts himself every class and starts an arguments if you disagree with his opinion. Only 2 tests and 2 Hw assignments that are incredibly confusing and difficult. Quizzes are online and he bases the content on his own writings. Overall I regret taking this class with him. I would not advise taking him!!
This teacher is very unorganized, very confusing, and does not explain assignments well at all... You can study all you want but you will not get an A. Philosophy is a good subject but do not take this teacher.... I could imagine that any other teacher besides him could do a better job.
About (6) quizzes, which were easy as long as you read the material assigned. (2) HW assignments, that are easy as long as you pay attention in class. However, the tests were extremely hard. It felt like the ?s on the tests came from the sky. He could've explained the info more instead of the long extended discussions that taught us nothing.
I took uper level classes with Mills from 2011-2013. His classes are challenging, but that's the best part about them. Philosophy isn't an easy subject. If you're not interested in it, then don't take the course. But if you're interested and a little intimidated, just go for it. He won't leave you hanging if you don't understand something.
Perhaps the best philosophy professor I've had the pleasure to study under at VCU. Dr. Mills respects the intelligence of his students, and expects you to prepare for class. His class is tough, rigorous, and challenging--as a 300-level philosophy course should be. I cannot recommend Mills highly enough, especially if you are a philosophy major.
Absolutely one of the best philosophy professors at the school. He is thought-provoking, and never hands you the answers. He guides you towards them. Mills is very skilled at explaining extremely complex topics in a way where you can walk away from it feeling confident enough. His feedback is always helpful as well.
My first Philosophy class ever, and for a requirement. Will not be taking philosophy ever again. The ideas are pointless and too involved. Spent half of a 3 hour lecture trying to explain what a chair was... Pop quizzes online that you have 24 hours to do are pointless and short so if you get 2 wrong answers you get a 60%.
Dr. Mills is one of the best teachers I have ever had. Class is interesting and engaging. The concepts themselves are abstract, but Mills explains them in a very understandable way. This is by no means an easy course, but if you make sure you understand the material and read his quiz/test questions carefully, you will do fine. Got an A easily.
Best thing is that he posts all of the readings on blackboard. Definitely need to read them because of surprise quizzes. He makes the exams hard on purpose. Three exams and a final. He drops the lowest three quiz grades and the lowest exam grade (not the final).
I am a bioinformatics major here at VCU and Professor Mills is by far one of the best professors I have ever had. He really cares about the students and wants them to understand the material. He is also hilarious! Make sure to do the readings because he does do "surprise" quizzes! It's a challenging class but fun and do-able.
I loved Professor Mills.. especially for my first philosophy class. It was definitely not a walk in the park, but it was always interesting and kept me challenging myself in a good way. I barely got an 'A' by one point, but I don't regret this class at all. He's very passionate about the subject and cares about his students.
this class was boring but you have to go to the lectures and take notes. l. I only tried the first half of the semester and still got an A.
If you are serious about philosophy, you must take Mills. He is thorough in everything. You will learn tons of eclectic philosophy information that will make your life way easier in future reading. He will make you do original argumentation, which is probably the hardest thing to learn. Taking Mills is to philosophy as taking algebra is to math.
Took 2 of his classes at my time at VCU, he's an awesome guy who's beyond intelligent and he actually cares about students. he's respectful and doesn't give ignorant replies when someone doesn't understand something, he actually takes the time to explain it. The best philosopher at VCU hands down.
Eugene Mills is a wonderful professor! He's very thorough in his lectures, and welcomes questions. He's extremely respectful of his students, which allows for very open and interesting conversation. Attendance is necessary, but he does everything he can to make sure his students understand each and every lecture.
Highly recommended. A lot of work and the material can be dense at times, but Mills manages to make the topics very understandable. Spends most of each class answering questions and having discussions rather than just lecturing. Tests are hard but are graded on a curve. Gives helpful feedback on assignments and is easy to reach outside of class.
Professor Mills was alright overall, he curves , but he is a very tough grader! I passed with a B, but never went to class because I learned more by just doing the readings, homework, and online quizzes.
If you do not take this class, you will regret it. Anyone saying the tests are hard just isn't a good student. I learned more in his philosophy 201 class than I learned in all my years of school. Mills is published the anthology used for the class. He is the best professor VCU has to offer.
This class can be difficult but prof Mills is a great great great professor. He's very well educated in his field and is great to talk to outside of class. If you're struggling with anything he will gladly help you. He also grades at a generous curve.
Obviously if you have a prejudice against philosophy you might not enjoy his class. However he is an exceptional philosophy professor, the best I've had at VCU. He leads good discussions, he challenges you, and he gives you really good and clear feedback. You'll get out of his classes what you put into it; you need to read, write, and engage.
This class is the hardest thing Ive ever done and will receive the worst grade Ill ever have received. The class isnt tailored to honors like it should be. Class is important and engaging but DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE!!!!!! If you have philosophy interest then do so but if you do not, THERE IS NO REASON TO TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Find a better option
Gene Mills is very passionate about philosophy, however, he doesn't do a very good job explaining the difference between opinion and ideas. There are many readings (around 10 pages per class) but they are hard to read. Overall, do the readings and try to absorb the lectures as much as you can, and make sure that you take good notes to study from.
Professor mills was great at starting deep philosophical discussions, but when it came to tests, there was nothing to study and use to prepare.
One of the best professors at VCU. Mills is passionate about philosophy. If you do the work, and try your best to absorb the readings, you will do well in his class and more importantly you will learn a lot. If you aren't a fan of philosophy and want an easy A, please do not choose this professor. But if you do love to learn, choose Mills!!
Our capstone class was on Vagueness, and the material was pretty complex, but he made every effort to make it as digestible as possible. He's a great lecturer, and a great guy. If philosophy comes naturally to you and you're a concise writer, you'll do well. He curved our grades at the end, so my 87 turned out to be an A.
Dr. Mills is a guy who clearly cares about his subject, is smart, and pretty funny as well, but his class is so difficult it's not worth it. Some professors are challenging yet worth the effort if you work hard. Dr. Mills is the kind of professor where even if you work really hard, there is no guarantee you will get the grade you deserve.
This professor is a classic example of too smart for their own good. Obviously brilliant, but leaves his class in the dust and doesn't really seem to care.
hands down hardest class ive ever taken and its a 200 level course... hes smart but hard to do well when no previous philosophy knowledge. ive taken 400 level courses and this is been the absolute most challenging. very vague in response when asked questions, and it didnt help that we didnt have any lecture.. or set date that he'd post "vid lecture
he is a good professor and tried to help us understand but if you are not ready to put in the work, I suggest you find literally anyone else. There is no extra credit but there is a curve at the end of the semester. Lots of reading and writing. His exams aren't straight forward and require you to think. Do not take if you want an easy A!!
I love this dude. This class has pushed me the most to be a better thinker and not phone-it-in. Honestly, he is a really tough professor, but it's coming from a good place. He believes that you should take the class seriously, and I agree, because taking this class has made me a much better thinker than when I started. He does pop-quizzes.
This was by far the worst class I have ever taken. I took this class as a first-year to fulfill my major requirements and I 100% regret it. He is too smart for his own good and will answer your questions in very vast ways that leave you even more confused. DO NOT TAKE. I currently have less than two weeks left in the semester and I have no grade.
He's a good person, but not a great teacher at all. He assumes we all know everything about Philosophy and throws all this knowledge at us like we've been studying it for years. It's by far the hardest class I have ever taken. His questions on his quizzes and tests are SO VAGUE. Choose another professor for this course, he's not worth ur time.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! No assignments, discussions, or projects. The course is quiz and test-driven with the quizzes only consisting of convoluted true/false questions of which you have a better shot at guessing. You will have no clue what the test looks like because he keeps it obscure. I and many others did not know our grades until the day of p/f.
There will be 20+ pages of readings of which there will be 6 t/f questions on the quizzes that are impossible to get a perfect score on, so do not expect to get above a 40/60. The tests are graded harshly and are just as hard as the quizzes, but they will be curved because he knows no one will do well. Did not know my grade all semester long! Avoid
this is maybe the worst class i've ever taken. yes, the material is hard, but he does absolute nothing to make it easier. tests are written like traps designed to trick u. it seems like his goal is to make u feel stupid so he can feel smart. its been 3 weeks into the semester and every time i try to tackle the material i actually start crying.
Professor Mills will really challenge you to analyze philosophical arguments on difficult material. Philosophy of language is especially challenging and was the first class I took where I felt like I couldnt immediately find flaws in the philosophers arguments. Patience and persistence are necessary to succeed in this class, but I am proud.
As long as you do the readings, this is a very interesting and passable class.
Eugene is a super charismatic guy and the content he teaches is super interesting, which I think are the only reasons I survived this class. You must be committed to studying the material for assignments and tests, and even then, don't expect a perfect score. Eugene implements a heavy grading curve, so keep up with the class and you'll be good.
PHIL333, Philosophy of Language. Hardest class I've ever taken, as a biochem major. Mills is too intelligent for his courses, and he expects you to reach that caliber. You are forced to think like you never have. Expect heavy readings and convoluted T/F quizzes. You must put in way more work than you think to pass. Expect to be greatly challenged.
