His class is a little difficult but he explains everything making it a lot easier. He is funny and very cute.
pretty interesting teacher. gives background info on books you read, and gives thorough explanation of the themes in the book. not that much homework...very nice teacher! take his class!
nice teacher. side tracks a little.
absolutely adorable, really helpful u can get by not doing alot of work but u get more out of it if u do, very funny and is always open to hear your ideas, def take his class
he's awesome with helping you out... his random information helps to explain the books from class definetly take his class
Very interesting professor and course.
he's very interesting and provides a lot of background info on the readings. however, the class discussion can get a lil confusion at times because he cant explain the idea, but that's only sometimes. he tells u what u want for the assignments and do them, there's very few. he's a great guy!
mad cool teacher and his class is cool too and hes a cutie :)
He has a lot of experience, but can't teach. Doesn't know how to explain concepts. I wouldn't recommend him.
He is an excellent teacher, one of the few who knows what he's talking about and can get into the subject. Keeps lecture interesting. He's very fair with grading and the workload is not bad. Just an awesome professor.
I don't see what all the hype is... he's a cool guy, an okay professor... his class drags on forever and it's kind of boring. There's not really a lot of work. He grades papers fairly, he'll rip you up if he thinks you did it the night before. I would take this class... he's not bad.
One of the most knowledgable people I've ever met. Very passionate about his subjects. Class discussions are fascinating, and he motivates you to think and write truly good papers. However, he can get confusing/boring in class, so students sort of have to keep him on track.
He's a really nice man who knows if you put effort into his class. He'll know everyone's name by the second day. If you go to his office hours, he'll know you care and you'll certainly get a good grade in his class. He's a fair grader. The reading list is kind of boring, and so are his lectures, but overall he's interesting and smart.
This professor knows what he's talking about and actually seems really passionate about making the students enjoy the class. He has a tendency to go on tangents in class, but they're interesting so it really doesn't matter. I would definitely recommend the class.
He brags about his work on the relationship between math and poetry and he always refers to obscure anecdotes that no normal undergrad. would understand. There are of course geeks who adore his pretentious charm. I say, get a life!
zzzzz
He is smart and you're likely to learn something (as opposed to, disapointingly so, the teacher he recommended after him). Didn't have any problems with the obscure anectodes (maybe he thought we were too stupid anyways). Such an easy grader. The simpler the essay, the better the grade.
He really knows his stuff. The lectures are interesting and incredibly helpful. However, he is a tough grader when it comes to essays because he pays attention to small details. But his tests are very easy if you take good notes and answer the study guide questions. You can definitely get an A in this class!
He's a nice enough guy, but he's boring as hell and he spits so don't sit in the front row. He's not very clear about his assignments so no one ever knows what we are actually supposed to do.
Great guy in an out of class. His greatest pitfall is that he sometimes makes it difficult for you to understand exactly what he wants. Extremely knowledgeable and willing to share his knowledge with the interested student. Really pays attention to the details in grading - he can tell if you did it the night before or if you've done lots of researc
Really enjoyed his class, he is so excited about what he's teaching and it shows. You have to get used to his voice which sounds dull, but if you can get past it and listen to what he's saying, it's always interesting.I learned a lot.As long as you answer the study guide questions you will do well on exam. He's not great with giving advice on papers.
First and foremost, look him up on YouTube. I would always bring something to chew on like cough drops or gum to keep myself awake during class. There is something about his voice that makes me want to fall asleep but if you can stay awake it is definitely worth it. He also asks questions in a roundabout way. Very intelligent Prof.
Eugene is an awesome teacher... You can definitely make it through his class if you Sparknotes the texts and make sure to see him for your papers. He'll tell you exactly what he wants. Also, spend some time with him outside of class for a higher grade - he loves to know about your personal life...
I loved "O," he was interesting and always had something new to say about the work we did in class. The workload is heavy but you don't need to read everything he assigns, just sound like you know what he's talking about. Take this class!!
fantastic professor, one of the best. really interesting and passionate about subject, made even the bible sound fascinating. really quirky, funny guy, knows a lot. very critical grader but fair, exams are easy so long as you just listen in class.
Ostashevsky is a great professor. At first he can be intimidating and will randomly call on you in class discussion, but he is very intelligent and really makes you want to read the assigned text and do the work. Learned a lot; alters the way you go about thinking about art and literature (in a good way).
His voice is somewhat intimidating but he's a really easy grader and a gives great analysis on the readings and interestingly connects them to art as well. Makes a lot of interesting connections to cultural issues but will make irreverent jokes them. Highly recommended.
Intimindating. He calls people out in class. When someone asks him something he will just respond with a useless "what do you think?" or "what does that even mean?" Also, he emailed us around 2 on a sunday saying "oh and by the way, read chapter 5 for class tomorrow" (about 50 pages). Not a fan of this guy.
Thinks about things in a weird way, wants literal interpretations most of the time which is confusing. Will randomly call on you.
Intimidating, but fascinating. Really smart guy who is passionate about what he teaches. Be sure to do the reading and write down what he says! He won't surprise you on exams. Very picky about writing though. Try to meet with him about papers. He doesn't come off as the most friendly guy, but he means well. I would take him for Cult II if i could!
Eugene is a straightforward, fairly easy professor. There were two papers and two exams. For the papers, go into his office hours, there is normally a long line because everyone knows that he is super helpful with writing. For the exams, just go over the review he gives and you will be solid. Overall, he was easy but not super inspiring or anything
This teacher takes the class way too seriously. Talk about pretentious. He grades too harshly according to grammar and not the content. He speaks in a monotone voice and has a accent. He is kind of intimidating to talk to. He grades essays hard, but his tests are super easy. Two essays, two tests.
Professors like Ostashevsky are the reason I came to college. Not only is he the best teacher I have ever had, he is also one of the most genuine and humble human beings I have ever met. Class is all about participation, and he never lets any student feel like they have said something stupid in class (even if they have). He is ridiculously smart.
Eugene either likes you or hates you. He is without doubt a great professor yet he really sticks to first impression so make yours count.
He is so smart!!!!!
He is the smartest person that I have ever met. So funny in a dry way-- love attending his lectures. He never makes you feel stupid. He makes you work really hard on essays, but isn't an incredibly difficult grader. He is the kind of professor you wish you were best friends with.
I love him so much, he's the nicest and the most helpful. Took his class three semesters in a row. He really loves his material and loves his students. Easy tests, interesting lectures, fun outings. TAKE HIM XOXOXOX
I would take Ostashevsky's class every semester if I could. The kind of professor that you remember for the rest of your life.
The absolute man. Difficult class but the passion he has for the subject is worth the hard work.
great
Probably the best Professor I've had.
All around great guy. If you engage with the material and the class discussions you can learn a lot. Don't be intimidated to participate - even if you don't have the "right answer," he will appreciate you more than those who sit there and zone out. He gives great feedback on essay and exams are pretty easy if you pay attention and do the readings.
Solid choice. Not too difficult. Take notes during class, and know the plot arcs of the readings, and you should be fine for the exams. Essays are not hard, but no bull-.
Very funny and knowledgable, a lot of reading though. Tough grader with essays but you will get a good grade if you show your understandings.
Easy to pass with no prepare. Easy to get a good grade with prepare. Not easy to get a good grade without prepare. He discusses more with students than he lectures. Sometimes funny.
Very tough on essays. Says specifically not many in the class will get As unless they're extraordinary. The tests are hit or miss in my opinion. Even if you review it a lot there's a chance if you don't study a certain stanza of the text, a whole section of the test will be based on it. However his lectures are very chill.
He is so great and he is that kind of teacher who you should come to NYU for. He is so knowledgeable. You can really learn something from his class. I know that people might think he is picky on essay. but to be fair, he is not a tough grader on tests and I think his tests are pretty easy. almost all my friends got 93+
Solid choice. Be prepared to read. Take good notes for reading and your future self will thank you during papers and exams. Prof. can be kind of boring but he tries his best to entertain. You can feel that he is a smart guy when you sit in his class. He is easy to approach and always happy to answer questions. Participate and he will appreciate you
Nice guy and will accommodate personal issues and grant extensions. A lot of ways to make up for not being able to go to class in person--offers zoom or records lectures. You will have to do small group projects but not a big deal. He gives study guides for exams but questions revolve around certain texts. Can be difficult to get an A on essays.
The reviews on here are accurate in that this professor is the kind that you come to NYU for. His class is definitely challenging- lots of reading and complicated material - but when you put the work in, it is very rewarding. Lectures are funny and engaging. I will say essay-grading is tough and he doesn't give too much feedback though. Take him!!
Wonderful! Assigns lots of readings, but goes over them so thoroughly in class that you'll be able to do well on the exams without doing the reading. There's two papers, a midterm, and a final, but he tells you exactly what to study beforehand. Hilarious and extremely smart. You can tell how much he cares about what he teaches. Take him!
Professor Ostashevsky is a very well-versed professor who is also very invested in philosophy. Although the class may be a bit difficult, since some of the concepts are very out there and he is a tough essay grader, it is very worth it to take his class.
Prof Ostashevsky does an amazing job of covering such a large amount of texts over such a short amount of time. He is very intelligent and forces you out of your comfort zone in terms of how you think. He gives good feedback on papers and the material on the midterm/final is clearly stated beforehand so you know what to review.
If you are a deep thinker and really enjoy philosophy, TAKE him! He is hilarious & super smart. he might be intimidating at first, but once you get know him, you will realize that he is such a nice guy!! btw, tough grader on essay. the key to success might be: trying to impress him by well incorporating and explaining complicated ideas in ur essay
I can tell he's very smart but he's not really great at teaching. His lectures and his choice of readings are pretty boring and he assigns a lot of readings. My biggest gripe about him is that he's rlly unclear with grading criteria. I went to office hours for clarification about his essay grading and he just started laughing at me.
He's not a bad guy and you can tell that he tries, but I didn't like his class at all. His readings were lengthy and dense. His lectures were just a recap of the books so it can feel slow paced. He's a firm believer in his ideas and isn't open to hearing other interpretations. Not for the light-hearted as he can be a "mean" if you ask questions.
His lectures are very boring, and he often goes on a tangent. His comments on essays are not helpful. He also makes it a point to say that most people will get a B, & As or even A- are not likely. Office hours were not helpful at all as he gives vague feedback. Overall, would not take his class again unless you are a hard core philosophy major.
Comparing as a tough grader, I would call him as a bizarre grader. I never understood his grading criteria, and his lecture, even though I love history and philosophy for years. WORST EVER PROFESSOR! You'll thank me for not taking his class
Professor Ostashevsky is probably the most intelligent person I've ever met. If you like philosophy you should absolutely take him. He seems cold at first but if you get to know him you'll realize how much he cares about his students. The coolest
Participation matters too much. Affects the way he perceives you and perceives your ability to write papers. Guy thinks he is the best at detecting plagarism. Would not take again.
Prof Ostashevsky is one of the most intelligent people I have ever met. He is someone who clearly cares a lot. Sometimes, I wonder why he is teaching an LS course; he should be teaching in the philosophy department. If you enjoy a philosophy-heavy class, definitely take him, But I would not take him again. he makes students feel dumb sometimes.
Yea he's a tough grader - but not in a way that's unfair. Definitely challenges you to write better than your previous classes. Just make sure to show him you're trying, participate frequently in class. Also his quizzes are explicitly taken from what was discussed in class, so they're easy if you pay attention.
Aspects of his class were bizarre. If you have interest in the content his lectures are quite interesting. Some of his thoughts are fascinating. However, he can be very demeaning at times, especially if you ask questions that might be obvious to him but aren't to you. Additionally, his grading is quite random and odd.
WORST EVER PROFESSOR! Do not take his class!
Take him!! He is such a responsible and inspiring teacher! Grading is not that harsh if you at least try.
take him if you think your GPA's too high
He will let you want to drop out from NYU!
Weird professor with weird grade
There are two papers that essentially determine your grade. Cold calls. He basically gives you a grade based on what he thinks is right. He tells you to “think critically” but only gives you a good grade if you regurgitate his own analysis in your writing. I would not take again.
Ostashevsky is a great professor and his lectures are really fascinating. I am planning on taking him again next semester, but he's a tough grader and very blunt. He can be borderline rude on occasions and not very encouraging of questions and participation, but overall I would recommend his class.
BEST PROFESSOR IN LS! TAKE HIM His course made me decide to major in comparative literature. He is always reachable outside of class, and his lectures are hilarious and super interesting if you listen. He really challenged readers and made me improve A LOT as a writer. Take him if you want to learn about the different perspectives of literature.
Prof is very knowledgeable and fascinated by the topics. You can tell that he knows a lot about literature. Yet, he is a bit awkward while trying to spark group conversation. He often asks very specific questions, expecting an answer that none of us can guess. There is a disconnect between him and students. Yet, class is very interesting.
For the people that don't understand his humor - that's a you issue. He's a very caring and hilarious professor if you get to know him. Literally just say whatever you're thinking and he'll help you build off of him. Take him!
Prof Ostashevsky is very passionate about his topic. He can be very blunt in criticism, but once you're used to it, it's very constructive. He offers a ton of very fun projects, and the class is participation-heavy. He is pretty strict with students doing homework, but otherwise very passionate and knowledgeable professor.
Professor is incredibly talented and genuinely cares about his students. While he may seem strict at first, he is actually very kind and supportive. Don't be afraid to answer questions, he is very encouraging. He is also always reachable outside of class. His lectures are truly inspiring, and I thoroughly enjoyed every writing assignment. Take him!
Before this class, I was nervous after seeing low reviews for Prof. Oschavetsky. But he's actually amazing—funny, engaging, and helpful. As long as you do the readings and participate, you'll be fine. His essay feedback is clear and thoughtful, and it's obvious he wants students to do their best!
Ostashevsky's class was the most unenjoyable experience I have had at NYU. The course material covered was interesting, but was unfortunately unpleasant to get through despite his passion for the material. Vindictive, petty, and unengaging, he continually left unhelpful feedback on assignments––and that's if there was any. Avoid if you can.
A true professor and artist, the embodiment of everything you could imagine about a perfect college classroom. At first, his atypically unsmiling, un-American seriousness might come off as stern, but the more you attend his classes, the more you sense his charisma.
Eugene is hilarious and assigns engaging texts that spark great discussions. The downside is the large amounts of heavy reading and his very high standards for an A. He's a tough grader with harsh feedback, but if you follow his advice and write what he's looking for, you'll do well. If you put in the work and listen, an A is definitely possible.
He can seem very intimidating at first, but he is actually funny and the class was engaging.
He was an outstanding professor. I took two classes with him, and I would eagerly sign up for any of his classes again if given the chance. He was genuinely passionate about teaching and valued dedication. If you're not a conventional thinker and appreciate deep understanding, then his classes are definitely for you.
If you are ready for a new dimension, take him!
