really funny laid back teacher
Boring
I really like his teaching style. He's anything but boring. You have to read the chapter highlights from the book for the tests. The tests are open note (closed book) so they're not that hard. Overall a cool guy.
This teacher is really interesting. He really helps the students to grasp the concepts of other religions. I suggest taking his honors class. It's only a little bit more work and it is really worth the effort.
He's very good at giving lectures. Very understandable. Tells you in class during lecture whether the specific question is going to be on the test. Can use notes on the test, but not the book. Gives extra credit points by going to museums.
get to use notes on the tests and gives you some of the test questions. only 1 assignment throughout the course. tests are multiple choice but are very difficult.if youre a good note taker than youll do well.
Fun & interesting class. Take good notes and u'll do fine on the test...I studied in advance so I never need to waste time on the tests going through my notes. Just a word of advice. Very helpful and clear professor.
Fun and cool teacher. Take notes, go to class everyday Gurante A.
Cool guy... hot in a strange way.... I loved his class though it got kinda boring in 102. Take him.
Very good teacher. Gived good notes and you can use your notes on the tests.
Best Anthropology teacher in the college. Very clear and interesting style of teaching. If you want to learn, and don't mind a little bit of work he is your man.
He is a nice guy, funny, has interesting ideas, tests are straight from the book, and not on too much material, study a little and get an A...Overall an interesting class
Excellent instrustor. Good perspective, great info, not too hard, not too easy. Go to class, do the work and you'll do well.
Great teacher. Always enthusiastic in what he teaches. Very funny and exciting to hear his lectures. I strongly recommend for anyone to take his class. It's worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Cool guy. Test questions are straight out of the book, so just read the book and you'll do well.
I found this teacher very easy; he tests straight out of the book, and lectures out of it too. Pity he doesn't use a good book, but those are the breaks. You only need to show up on test days, and he gave us one written assignment.
His tests use to be easy. He has changed them and now they are extremely difficult. I am a 4.o student and my test scores are all B's. Most people in the class are getting c's and d's. He has a great personality though.
He is VERY interesting in lectures. He makes it so much fun to listen to, but his tests are VERY hard. I bled myself dry for the class and I'm getting either a B or a C. I think he's not worth it coz it screwed my grades. VERY VERY tricky tests. Most people got B's and C's
An amazing lecturer, he is very funny and entertaining. The tests were based on his lectures and book. He reminds me of a stand up comedian. One of the most interesting classes I ever taken.
He's very funny and nice, but his preping skills suck as much as his tests. He goes on and on about nothing and, then when testing day comes your shocked at the level of difficulty that it's written.
People should think twice when it comes to his class. Ya, he's funny and laid back, but his tests and teaching skills are AWFUL. THe tests are too long and questions are long. Whatever he talks about is not even on the test. I hated the class. Don't waiste your time, energy, and money.
Great teacher, very detailed in explainations. Fun Class
His teaching method is lame and weak because it doesn't even match with the test, but he is nice and laid back (surfer attitude). Just a pathetic class. Don't take him. As a person he is wonderful, but as a teacher he is weak!!
As a person he's polite and friendly, but as a teacher he SUCKS, SUCKS, and SUCKS. He can't teach. Not a class I reccomend nor his teaching method
He whines alot about how little resources he has to teach the class. He gives tests that are disproportionately difficult given that he over simplifies his lectures. His grading scale is not clear and I'm currently contesting the grade I got in his class. If possible find another teacher.
Great teacher and very funny too. Test are straight out of the book. People who complain just dont read or pay attention. I enjoyed the class.
I agree that he was unprepared and his tests are hard, but if you have to take Antrho with him, take it honors. I would have gotten a low B if I was in the regular class, but got an A with honors. As long as you write the papers and turn them in on time you're fine. All in all, Anthro dept sucks.
Lame class, horrible lectures, funny guy, hard and long tests, and he sucks as a teacher. Do yourself a favor and don't take him!!!!!!!!!
super cool teacher. very chill, everything is clear and fair. intresting stories. take him if you can.
hes funny and laid-back, but that doesnt mean he needs to be easy. when hes lecturing I think he's trying to give a general idea of what to study, he doesn't spell it all out for you. i got a "B" without that much work.
Know what he was great just he got off topic way way too much, I mean so much it would put us behind days. He just confused me too much, and the book was very new, and he was still feeling it out.
DO NOT take this class if you want an A or B. Do take it if you want entertainment because he is funny. Tests are impossible to pass. Very difficult and unfair. He purposely tricks you.
Funny but does complain a lot about the school and its resources, how he shouldnt have to lecture, we should already know about austropithecines!A lil pretentious.Did not make me feel like I was doing good enough job,but got an A somehow.Tests were baffling too.Learned more about him than anthroplogy
Scott is a nice guy but his lectures were so long and he went off track 98% of the time if you are serious about anthro don't take him it's a waste of time!
This guy is great. He is very funny and it keeps your attention. Although he does go off track a lot of the time, but it usually if not always has relavance to the lecture. Tests can be tricky, but its part of the understanding.
Everytime he talked about his personal life it was relevant 2 the course. The 1 thing that kept this class from being a bore was the comparisons of life & anthro. He doesnt care about attendance & takes role the 1st month but dont miss an exam it must be a serious matter & he needs proof 4 U 2 makeup.

God, I love this man. He's a former slacker turned professor, has a realistic attitude and approach to both the material and his students. Open mind is a must. He requires you to understand the material from the author's perspective, but not necessarily agree with it. Take him. He's way hot too.
Wore a shirt to class on test day that said "BONO FOR POPE." 'Nuff said. He rules.
I absolutely loved this course. Informative and fun, Professor Scott is a phenomenal teacher. Be aware that he does make fun of religions a lot (particularily Christianity) so if you're sensitive to that sort of thing this is not a class for you. Pay attention when he tells you to study a particular part in the book...and read the book!
reccomend it to everyone! if you have any interest in the subject, HIS CLASS IS A MUST.Great teacher, great guy, interesting funny and real.
Mr. Scott is the coolest professor I have had. He is super funny and sarcastic. Classes were fun and informative. The tests cover a lot of lecture and will always include stuff from the book that wasnt discussed in class. Reading isnt that hard, the book is really short and easy to read.
My favorite teacher at Valley by far.
Opps. This is what i meant to put. He rocks.
He teaches stuff straight out of the book. The tests are easy as long as you read. No assignments, just three tests and an easy essay. Definitely an easy A if you read and understand. If you don't understand the book, which is short and pretty easy to read, then go to class because he explains it all in depth.
I LOVED Mr. Scott, he is one of the funniest teachers, AND he has gorgeous eyes! Aside from that his class is easy, because all you get is 4 tests and an essay which is extremely easy. The only way you can get A's on his tests is if u either read the chapters very well or really listen in class. Other than that he's awesome
I loved eugene! i agree with the person on the bottom he has gorgeous eyes...and hes a fun person!...he always tells stories about the guru..and the way he does their impressions is HILaRIOus!...u dont have to go to class as long as u take the tests, but honestly he keeps u interested...DEfinetly my fav. teacher! <333
the best teacher ever!!explains the material the in a best explainable way possible. concise and clear on the tests, helps out with questions. he is also nice and take him for sure!
dude!!!! he uses the old edition, and has his test off that, so matter how much you study it wont do you any good
If you study for an A, you will get a B on the test. Bcuz his test are outdated from old books that he used few years ago
I cannot believe anyone would whine about this guy! He's funny, fun, and WRITES EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW on the board! How the heck anybody could have trouble in the class I will never know. Take him, enjoy his stories about his friends and family, take notes, and walk out with an easy A and an education.
He has been one of my favorite teachers. Once i took this class i was so interested in reading the book. It's an easy read. His class consists of 4 test and an essay. Just read the chapters and his lectures are a bonus to being enrolled. they just help out for the test, because he goes over a lot of the questions on the test. take this class!
Great teacher! He is helpful! Pay attention to his lectures and read the chapters it's an easy pass! Great class I enjoyed his lectures very much! He is def not dull! Take the class!
prof scott is amazing!! he is a great teacher, very helpful and definetely very entertaining...but trust me you will leave the class with a lot more knowledge than u entere with if you can, def take him for anything!!!
Great guy, hot. Lectures don't relate to wording on tests, I studied the book for hours and still only got Bs on the tests. Only 1 essay for reg class... No need to attend class other than to hear his great stories... Laid back class, but you need to memorize the book for the 4 tests.
Great class
HOT! GREAT TEACHER TOO!!! AM TAKING HIM AGAIN BECAUSE I LOVE HIS CLASS SOOO MUCH. TOOK HIS HONOR CLASS AND IT WAS THE BEST HONORS CLASS EVER
Young, funny, and relates well to students. An easy class if you have had Anthro 1. Openly atheist, he is critical of Isalm and Christianity specifically, but does so in a humorous way. Admits that since witchcraft is a religion, class adds witchcraft to the title of the class just to draw more students. I found it easy.
really cool kat
Lecture notes are disorganized have to read the book over and over and be lucky to get an "A" and does not throughly give insight on the book. nice spontanious guy but not easy. lot's of stories about his life and how old his getting. fun class but don't have to attend.
Excellent teacher. Keeps the class entertained with his funny jokes and stories. Never once walked out without a good laugh. You have to keep an open mind; nothing is sacred or off limits. Study, and you are guaranteed an A on the tests, which is an A in the class. Covers MOST of the material in class, but still, you have to read the book.
I so want to give Prof. Scott a good review, but it's kinda hard. I mean this guy is really awesome and funny, but he is so all over the place. He ends up going off on tangents in every lecture so at the last minute he says oh here is the info, blah, blah. But he may be worth it to check out, I still might take another class with him
I loved this class. Cool teacher: super nice, super smart and very open minded. Yes, he is funny and he get a bit side-tracked telling stories and jokes but, its always related to cultural anthropology. Solution: don't interrupt him to ask silly questions! There are lots of new terms to know for the test but it can be done. Test is multi-choice.
Awesome teacher. He is so interested in the material. It was a great class so take. It's not that the class is an easy A, although it is, but it's more that the material is very simple. The book is an easy read, and i read it for the hell of it. You really could sit there and listen to his lectures and get an A.
gets side tracked like crazy.i wouldnt recommend takin him.
People who complain about the professor are those who do not like opening their books and studying. If you are a college student you need to study from the book and have the professor as a guide through that process. Once we start to realize this, we will start appreciating our professors more. Professor Scott is one of the best professors I've had
THE BEST TEACHER AT LAVC!!! Funny, cool and intelligent. Take good notes and keep up with the reading. The class is easy and interesting if you put in your part.
took him for both 102 and 121. enjoyed both classes. You totally dont have to go to class. I showed up every once in awhile, read the chapters and got and A. theres 4 tests, and a paper. THe paper is on anything you want as long as you can relate it to the class. Hes funny and entertaining and not bad on the eyes.
He is horrible!! Do yourself a favor and take someone else...
READ THE TEXT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! REAL COLLEGE CLASS THAT ACTUALLY TAKES SOME STUDYING. MATERIALL IS INTERESTING AND HE IS NOT A BORING GUY. RECOMENDED IF YOU WANT TO SEE WHAT A UNIVERSITY LEVEL CLASS IS LIKE
Mr. Scott is a funny guy. he makes fun of others' beliefs which is not funny and mostly offensive. test are hard. even though i showed up in every class and studies too hard but still got a C because his tests are too tricky. i wouldnt recommend him.
YOU NEED TO READ THE THE BOOK! OU don't need to come to every class, but if you don't you can miss out on some sneaky extra credit. The paper is super easy, pick anything you want and relate it to the class. He goes off topic a fair bit, but I would take him again.
Horrible teacher...test were extremely hard...would never take him again
I hated him so much...He is a very lazy professor. everyone told me to take him and i couldnt stand him. everytime he started to teach he would drop it and say it was in the book and started talking about himseld like he was that special.i dropped his class and got a W i hated him that much. Horrible professor would never take him again.
Great guy, very easy-going and reasonable. Class is easy but tests are hard. He's also absent a lot, which is nice. Be warned: the tests are HARD! Don't take for granted the class is so easy. He gets the tests from the textbook company & DOES NOT write them himself, so you MUST read the book!
I don't understand some people here. I took him for both Anthro 132 and 102, A's both! Looked forward to every class of his, and I only read the chapters once before the exam and got high scores, not hard just listen to his lectures, about 75% comes from his lectures. I highely recommend him!
BEST TEACHER EVER!! he's hysterical you remember the material because he relates it to some joke. Class changed my outlook on life - loved the class, love the teacher, take it!
Nice guy, laid back,he was an elementary school teacher so his teaching style is that way. Lectures are frustrating because he doesn't stay on track then he makes up for it the day before the test.READ THE BOOK.The tests are from the textbook company not him. Extra credit at the end.
Best teacher. he is really a funny guy. makes jokes about the subject which actually really helped me remember for the test. i 100% recommend him to anyone who wants to take him. you will not go wrong and you will really enjoy the subjet. TAKE HIM!! FYI read the book and study the notes and you'll do just fine!!
I enjoyed his class yeah he makes jokes oh well we are all Adults get over it. If you read the book and take good notes you should do well. I would take him again he is great...
Fun class! Tests are easy just need to read the book because all questions are from the book. Not an easy grader he grades by how many points you accumulate through your tests.
really nice guy! and very funny. classes not mandatory because everything is from the book. you could literally not attend any classes, read the book, and pass the class. tests are from a test bank
I've taken his 102, 143,and his 121 class. His tests are straight from the book, and there is one writing assignment 5 pages long due at the end of the semester. Overall really good and funny teacher. Highly recommended.
I am currently taking his Anthropology 121 class. He's a very funny guy! The jokes are all related to the subject. He tends to drift off on some fun stories, but always gets back to the subject. I'm having a lot of fun in his class. You do have to take notes and read the book chapters if you want to get an A.
He keeps the class interested by being really funny. The class is very straightforward: read the book, try to stay awake in class, and take the multiple-choice tests. He's a nice guy with a good sense of humor. Highly recommend.
He's very funny and he keeps the class interesting. There's a of reading from the book. He gave only three test, one paper and the Final.
Awesome, you will not find a better professor anywhere.
Pretty funny and cool guy, as well as great professor. Always tells funny/amusing anecdotes that relate back to the class/subject. He made the subject interesting and engaging. I wish I could have him again!
Mr Scotts very funny, and lectures are sooo chill. Makes you wana go to class just to hear his funny stories. Not a hard class, just follow the lectures and read the chapters youll get an A
I can't tell u enough how funny he is. A must take! His stories would make u laugh so hard if u dont think about it too seriously. VERY helpful if u strugle. 3 tests, which come right off the text. The text is boring and non-sense at times, bare with it. The main point, he wants u to be an open-minded person, to look at other beliefs, hollistically
I loved this teacher and this class! I took him during the summer, and it was tough, but I learned so much. He's passionate about what he teaches and makes it very interesting. Would love to take another class with him in the future. Take his class....you won't regret it!
Good teacher, fun and intelligent. Study and come to class to get an A.
GREAT TEACHER! I can't stress this enough. He is engaging even at 8 am, always on time and is very clear about what you need to know for the class. You MUST use the book though, so if you don't want to read stay away... but if you can get through that the man is hilarious (plus you get to be blasphemous in class, always a plus!)
Hilarious professor! Makes his classes much more ejoyable. His stories will keep you interested and glued to front board at all times. Extremely helpful and easy with tests, you have one major essay on an amazingly interesting topic, 3-4 tests and reading, do that and its an easy A.
took him class wasn't easy you have to rea read over and over again the chapter 2 understand he can be funny but doesn't clarify things well. Hard essay 2 write and doesn't really explain how 2 do it.
Cool professor & interesting class!!! Multiple choice is tricky & you need to understand the concept. Go to class, take excellent notes, read the book, learn the material & you should pass your tests. Essay takes time, thought, good writing skills & weeks to write. Grades are based on points earned. Tutoring & Service Learning helped me get my A.
Not helpful at all, must read chapters thoroughly to get a good grade on his tests. Tests can be confusing at times if you did not read, it took him over a week to grade our essays because he directly told us he was watching Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings, that is why he did not have time, pathetic!
Useless! You don't need to attend class, just read the book. He stands at the front of the class READING to you, or telling inappropriate stories. Sometimes he's funny, but more often than not he's plain offensive. If you like him personally it's a great class. If you're actually trying to learn anything, skip it!
He's a great teacher with a fun interesting class. Tests are very easy/ multiple choice. Not hard to pass the class. Unless you never come to class/ never read the book you'll be just fine. Take him, he's an absolute blast!!!!
I took him 4 both 121&102@same time.amzng prof.loved both classes.was easy when u actually listen 2 him,he explains everything clear.reading books was interesting but certainly not necessary 2 get an A,i did. Very fun and those who criticize him-chill,he is awesome.Hot as f*ck too i might add:)makes material sink in a little better:)
Awesume teacher! Very excellent, very easy. You do have to read the book but tests are multiple choice and very easy. Very fun and exciting class! Very happy I took it! :D
He is funny, not gonna lie. But DAMN he talks about one subject the whole time! And when I say subject I really mean word!!! He doesn't cover everything because he's still talking about that one word! An then when you see the test your like "ok?! He did not talk about this!" anyway, I did enjoy it otherwise but you gotta let him know "ok! On to the next word!!!"
TAKE HIM! I'm almost done taking his anthro 121 and I loved it. If only he taught all the other subjects, I'd be in all of his classes. Clear. Helpful. Passionate. Funny. It's not hard at all. Read the book and you'll get an A. And the paper is easy and he gives many chances to get an A. You can't be lazy and expect an A.
Just an awesome and incredibly funny professor. This class made me hate the weekends because I was always looking forward to seeing him on Monday. Take this class if it interests you, the lecture makes up for the majority of the test, and the book is really helpful, easy to read and well divided so easy to find the material you need to study for.
OMG he is the best professor ever!you will never get bored in his class cuz he is so HILARIOUS! He pretty much gives more than half of the answers for the test during the lecture. Reading the book helps. no hw,just 4 tests and one research paper on an interesting topic!I fell in love with Anthro cuz of him, he goes over stuff until its in your head
Hard CLASS TO UNDERSTAND BUT READ THE BOOK. 3 TESTS, RESEARCH PAPER AND A FINAL. NOT A EASY GRADER HE GRADES DEPENDING ON POINTS YOU GET EACH TEST IS WORTH 50PTS.
I took Cultural Anthropology with Professor Scott in LAVC Fall Semester 2012. He makes learning more flexible, fun and interactive. Also, he gives key references for the exams. As an overview of ANTH102, there are 3 chapter exams, 1 term paper and 1 final exam. The grade A can easily be obtained if you do your chapter readings and term paper well.
If you are a woman and offended by inappropriate humor do not take this class. I cannot believe he is a professor. The class was so easy it felt like I was back in high school. If you like challenging professors and learning, I would suggest another class if you are a serious student.
Talks alot but overall a great teacher. He's extremely helpful and kind.Interesting class. Exams are easy if you read the material and pay attention . He normally gives five answers out on the exam.
He's a good guy, really lets his mouth loose, though. I like Anthropology, taking him I soon realized how dead the field really is. Take him for an easy A. All you have to do is take notes and pass his tests. His approach to teaching is lazy. He also seems to get into trouble for running his mouth too much.
Talks a lot, gives out answers to the test in class. Show up, take notes, read the chapters and you get your A. Nice and fun guy really is,his jokes get boring but stay strong and it'll be over in no time.
Awesome teacher and very interesting class. Enjoyed the teacher's stories. Do not believe the, "Haters". He re enforces all lectures so you will earn the grade you deserve.
Awesome professor!! Cracks a lot if jokes and makes the class alot more interesting! He gives four test but with out a study guide, but the tests are easy because he gives roughly 80 percent of the answers in class and you just use the textbook for certain examples. There is also an easy 4 page essay about a ritual. Super easy and fun class! :)
talks too much during class, talks about random stuff for the first 45 mins then goes to what needs to be discussed by the end of class. talks too much about things not related to class.
Need to write a paper about rituals. Pretty easy class. He keeps you interested. He had surgery when I took his class. And had a bunch of subs. Subs which were the authors of the book we used. What they said was legit. But he talks about so much random stuff.
First week was us talking about her mother. 2nd,3rd and 4th week AND ON - never heard from him since. On the 5th week, the sub said she's going to be the instructor for the class from that time on.
The semester I had him, he was gone for about two months. The subs were HORRIBLE! I felt lost the whole entire time. Once he came back, I still felt a bit lost because he'd always get side-tracked. He talks about too many random things, which makes his class interesting. Not too hard of a class if you read the book and come to class to take notes.
i loved this teacher! he really keeps you interested and he is very helpful. he lets you know exactly what to study for the tests and gives very through lectures. he does go off topic a lot and likes to tell stories but i found them entertaining and didn't mind. overall great teacher!
Had him fall2012. He randomly stopped coming to class. Our sub was great but it was obvious how confused she was as to whether he'd be back or not. He left everyone in the dark. Misogynistic and makes inappropriate remarks. Never talks about the material and does an annoying caveman voice when referring to primitive life. Some anthropologist.
Previous comment is crap. I took him fall of 2012,he showed up to every class.Only one class was cancelled and he told us a week ahead of time. A lot of culture has misogyny ingrained into it. His style of teaching involves mimicking the subject of study. That does not make him misogynistic. If you're so incredibly sensitive, don't take the class.
Really awesome teacher! Loved his style of teaching
Professor Scott is why I became an anthropology major. Yes - have a thick skin because he is an equal-opportunity humorist. However, in anthropology, one learns that EVERY culture is equally weird and can be laughed at. Yes, his lectures can be repetitive, but, guess what? That material is imbedded in my skull now. He really cares. Great class!
Spends way too much time discussing things that have nothing to do with the material. Didn't learn anything.
AMAZING professor! He is incredibly thorough with the subject matter and takes time to answer questions until you one hundred percent understand it. He spends a lot of time making fun of the subject matter, so if you can't handle that sense of humor, I don't recommend him. His stories are absolutely hilarious. Do the reading, you'll be fine.
He was all right. I took him during the summer session. Not much to say about him though.
I attended Professor Scott's Anthropology 121 Fall 2014 course and I must say I learned a great deal about the concept of religion. I consider him masterful in his explanations and teachings. His lectures are unorthodox but effective. Participation is easy, and everyone's opinionsquestions are welcomed in the atmosphere he creates.
Professor Scott is very knowledgeable in his field. His may veer off during his lectures sometimes, but the information you need to know for the exams is covered. If you need help, just ask him and he will give it to you. Overall, a good Professor.
He's a fun professor, though I can see how he's not everyone's cup of tea. He's pretty knowledgeable and keeps lectures interesting, though he does have the tendency to get off-topic sometimes. He can be funny and, as an Anthro major, it was interesting to hear about his experiences abroad. Fair tests and grading. Can be really helpful if you ask.
I took Anthro121 during the Winter 2015 sesh. He is a great professor , very neutral about many religions, discusses what you feel is difficult until you understand it . His grading is clear and the syllabus also explains . I learned so much in such a small amount of time . Definitely a great choice and indeed helpful and there for his students .
Not only is this professor hilarious and has the ability to keep a class full of 40 people engaged early in the morning, but he is clear with the information and makes it incredibly easy for one to pass. He makes boring topics interesting and interesting topics easy to store in your memory with his ridiculous jokes... And I love his outfits! Hahaha
The class was four major exams and one essay about personal experience. If you don't read the chapters and take notes in class, you will not get an A. This is not an EASY course, but it is so so so fun. I have never before been excited to go to a 9:40 AM class. Not an anthro major but will take more courses with him just because of his lectures.
I loved this class! Keeps students interested in the material. Take good notes and read the book at least 3 times and you will get an A.
I took his ANTH121 class Summer 2015. 8 am classes are not easy to attend but I showed up every morning for the humorous lectures. He can get off topic only because he wants to keep the class a little less serious and engaged. Great professor, EASY A! But do your part and read!
I took this course during the summer semester of 15' GREAT professor! lectures are interesting. definetly expected to read before hand. tests are easy as long as you pay attention to lectures, READ, STUDY and you'll be fine. he is an educated professor and wants everyone to pass. EASY A if you pay attention and read. thanks for a great semester.
His lectures were extremely helpful. Don't skip class. Super hilarious teacher-keeps you engaged. You must read each assigned chapters. Gives great explanations on content. Funny as hell. Refreshing in a teacher! I fell behind because I didn't buy a book, until I borrowed his- played catch up-passed the class. Dope content-insightful-not boring !
Scott is passionate about Anthro & is hilarious!!!! He will seriously make your day and time will fly by if you pay attention. No assignments. Just a few tests and a paper. He is seriously awesome and if you don't take him, you will MISS OUT on a quality professor. He actually made me rethink my major but I'm still sticking to it. Don't miss class!
He is a really great guy. But he spends to much time talking about his life and doesnt teach anything. I had to drop his class before failing it.
Do yourself a favor and dont take this class
Amazing Professor! This was one of the most enjoyable and informative classes I have ever taken. The subject material can be divisive at times but as long as you keep an open mind, show up, & pay attention you can pass this class. Plus even the slightest bit of participation in class discussions will help your grade tremendously.
I took Scott for Anthro 121 and hes super funny. He does babble about a subject for 15 minutes or so but the test answers are laid out in front of you or in the book. Definitely would take again. Made an 8 am class easy to go to!
Prof Scot , is very sarcastic, he can be funny , he tends to trick you on the test , he gives you a correct answer, semi correct answer, a good answer and a wrong answer . So he tricks you , he once said "if you get a C in my class, that means you're paying attention , if you get an A in my class you're cheating!) He always gets of topic
He's a horrible teacher do yourself a favor and don't take this class especially if you aren't great at test taking. He talks so much about nonsense and all the notes he makes you take are barely apart of the test. He might sound nice and funny, but he's a hard grader. It's pretty much a pass-fail class.
Professor Scott is a good anthropologist, but not a good teacher. Sure he knows his stuff, but he rarely actually teaches. He gets off topic literally EVERY single lecture and goes on and on and on about things that are "related" but really aren't. I wouldn't recommend this class if you're an anthropology major.
I took this class in Summer '16 and Professor Scott is awesome! This was my first class back at school in over a decade and I couldn't have picked a better one. He is funny, engaging and passionate about his subject matter. He does go off on tangents a lot, but if you read the book and take notes on the key points in class the tests are cake.
Professor Scott is a good teacher, he just gives me anxiety the way he teaches. Hell spend the first hour going on random semi-relatable tangents then spend the last 15-30 minutes going over the material he needs to.
He does NOT go over the material during class. He talks about his life too much and at the end of class he says, "You have the book. You can look up the terms". He's cool, but he makes racist jokes that really aren't that funny. There are 3 tests and the final is not cumulative. Study for the tests because thats almost all of your grade.
Very disorganized. Spends all of class going off on tangents about his personal life that have nothing to do with the material, then says to read the book to get all of the information, making attending class pointless. He tries to be funny by saying offensive things. The subject matter is really interesting, but definitely take another professor.
I'm currently enrolled in a Master's program at UCLA and thought that taking an "easy" class I never took would be helpful especially considering I originally planned on majoring in anthropology. That went south rather quickly. Professor Scott is smart, I don't doubt that. However, it seems he's a college instructor only to earn a damn check.
Talks about the material randomly, goes off in random stories maybe 15% of the information will be given to you. The rest of the time he just talks randomly about anything that comes to him. If you do not like reading get ready to read because you will have to teach your self for the tests. he is "cool" but I do not recommend this professor.
He's a great guy in general, but terrible at his job. He tends to fool around too often in class, and his tests are too wordy and difficult. He talks too much in class, gets off topic, and he talks about his life a lot. He always forgets to present the hw assignments until class ends when everyone is leaving, and did not prepare us for the final
Personally I liked to read and make an outline for the chapter we were going to go through in class that day. He does digress, which is where having your outlines will come in handy. He talks a lot but it helps make the course work memorable for tests. There was only one essay but he is not a difficult grader as long as it shows you studied.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Doesn't teach anything but just talks about his life. In the last 10 min of class he'll try to "teach". This is a self taught class. You wanna pass? Read the book and make sure you know it because he won't teach you. Tests are every 4 ch. but he'll only give 1.5 pages worth of notes for them. HORRIBLE
Not only was this class easy, but also very interesting. Highly recommend this class. Only difficult part was the final paper. He gives out many answers from the test during lecture so pay attention because the questions are sometimes tricky. Lectures were usually clear but he would go a little off topic a lot, but that made the class more fun.
The class was ok, but it's tough to pay attention to because he's always off topic. But when he does get on topic hes funny and inclusive. He is a VERY slow grader though. VERY SLOW.
This professor is funny and jolly but does not teach properly! He goes off topic all the time and doesnt provide us with study guides for the exams. Its more of a teach yourself course. I regret taking this course because I like interesting lectures but thats not what he gives us.
I'm not sure I understand his low grades on here, he's smart and makes you think. Perhaps that's to much for some students. His style is fun, inventive and he likes participation. There is homework and testing but it's not to heavy. I'd love to take another class, great early in the day because he wakes you up.
One of the best professors I've ever had. I have taken him twice now, and I really wish he taught more anthropology courses because his methods of teaching are just really great.
If you want to have fun in the class, take his class: he is dancing and singing, he is jumping and jogging in the class, but he doesn't explain the subjects well. Half of the class's time he spent to remand previous chapters, another half part he used to joke and gave explanations about the new chapter. In fact, he never explained none of chapters.
pretty good class, dont have to read too much but it helps A LOT on the exams if you do. He tends to digress but I didnt really mind, he repeats a lot to make sure you get the info and for the most part tells you exactly what will be on the exams. Only a couple assignments and hes approachable if you have questions or need help with anything.
This class is points earned basis. Easy professor but you're teaching yourself. Doesn't take role. Doesn't really explain. Overall, not a hard class. Take it.
His lectures can be pretty funny and he does review everything in the book. Book does help with questions on the test but i didn't have one and still passed with an A. He does give out answers to the test the class before the test and some on every other lecture so attendance is mandatory!Overall he is great. Study the book/notes and you will pass.
Prof. Scott is not for everyone. His lectures are about the subjects you need to know, but he takes a lot of liberties on how he conveys that info. He is a really funny guy and he isn't afraid to make goofy animal noises to get his point across. If you study for the tests and pay attention you will pass. Take this prof. if you wanna have fun.
Funny lectures, enjoyable class. Although attendance isn't really mandatory - he goes over test material in class sometimes so if you don't come you'll miss out. Homework assignments are fairly easy. Study for the tests, pay attention, complete the assignments and you are guaranteed to pass. Approachable and understanding.
Gives good feedback
You're pretty much teaching yourself. His lectures are very vague and he goes off on tangents for most of the lecture. He is horribly offensive and his jokes are not okay. If you have trouble sitting still, this class is 100% not for you. It is so boring because you expect a good lecture but get the opposite. 2-3 homeworks, 3 Tests, 1 Final.
Professor Scott made things fun, this class isn't for everyone. Gives 3 homework assignments and 3 quizzes your final. One paper of course was pretty easy and I enjoyed my paper. Make sure to come to class he gives out answers for the quizzes. These answers wont be part of the book but of the lecture! He was hilarious loved this class.
Interesting subject, terrible professor; if you want to actually pass the class and LEARN something please find a different professor. But if you just want to mess around and not learn a thing, hes your guy!
He is a really good prof. He's easily accessible outside of class and if you read the material and put in effort it will reflect on your grade. I would highly recommend him we had really engaging discussions in his class and his assignments are really enjoyable. He's very clear with what he expects from you. 100% would recommend
As long as you read the book, you will be fine! You get few assignments a week and the book is actually so interesting. Easy A.
Amazing professor! He is very kind and funny! He really makes you enjoy Anthropology. I highly recommend him as a professor!
Really nice guy! If youre looking for something super serious and hard this is not the class for you. Honestly a good class and I learned a lot
THIS PROFESSOR IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!!! You literally just need to watch the zooms and take notes and you will pass the class. He gives out test answers during every single class and not one of his assignments are super hard. He is so funny too and you will have a fun time with this class. Take the one with zoom tho to get the extra info he gives
He is the best professor ever!! He is very chill, very kind, and understanding to all of his students.
Overall he was a very chill teacher, his workload is honestly very manageable, he usually gives about one or two assignments a week, and they're always due on Sunday at 11:59. Throughout the entire semester, he only gave three tests and four quizzes, all of which had three attempts. Would definitely take him again.
I loved everything about this course, from the professor to the actual assignments and the readings. It was such an intriguing class, the assignments each teach you something new. If you are interested in religion and spirituality then you will love this course, and I think Prof. Scott does a great job teaching it.
Eugen Scott is a phenomenal professor and deserves all the recognition he deserves. There is a lot of reading to be done, but the book is accessible online in a PDF file. Would definitely take the course again.
This was a great five week course and just be ready to keep up with assignments!
Professor Scott has very interesting lectures that you could read through without getting bored. His five week class was extremely straight forward and I enjoyed it.
His lectures are straightforward and keeps you interested. The textbook is a PDF file, very accessible. He's funny and very understanding. His class only has 3-4 quizzes overall. Attendance is mandatory for zoom calls. Zoom calls in his class are hilarious which makes you look forward to the next one.
I would highly recommend this professor. One of the few professors on campus who is genuinely interested in the topics.
Professor Scott is honestly amazing. I have sent him an email or two requesting extensions, which he never hesitated to provide. I've genuinely enjoyed every moment of being in his class, highly recommend it to anyone looking to take anthropology! (don't expect leniency if you plan on putting forth minimal effort)
I recommend!!
I think many people who are not rating him well do not understand the class, and did not read the rules or understand what they were taking, or were easily offended. The class is awesome and you have to be open-minded, he is an awesome professor who is clear about his expectations, if you do the homework, you will pass just fine. It's a fun class.
He is a great Professor! His work is not hard...couple of quizzes and you can retake them as much as you want...you make a study guide every week define the terms in your own words...book is online...and he has you read or listen to some articles (or audio) and answer 2 questions ..thats all..just do the work and you will for sure pass with an A.
A great caring professor. He wants you to pass so there's lots of grace in turning in assignments and retaking tests in Canvas. If you show up to class and take notes on his PowerPoints you will pass. I have short-term memory issues and still passed with an A. Pls take his class you won't regret it.
Took his class back in Fall of 2022 and it was by far one of the easiest classes I took that year, his power points and lecture notes were very easy to understands and shows his passion for the subject material!
Professor Scott is an engaging lecturer who makes anthropology interesting. The workload is manageable, and unstuck AI proved invaluable for study prep. Recommended for an informative and enjoyable class.
Pros: -easy -takes little time -amazing professor -clear grading criteria -funny -understanding (you'll feel comfortable emailing him if u need an extension or something) -very interesting -weekly deadlines Cons: -chapter 3 had ~2hrs of reading material -asks analytical questions every chapter (they're not that hard though) -takes a week to grade
Professor Scott is such an easy going professor. Honestly, I didn't go to that class sometimes, but his in-person classes honestly have barely ANY work (his online courses have more work). You get extra chances if you mess up a test, and we did one really easy paper, I recommend for people who have already heavy schedules.
I was taking 15 units and his class was part of that for spring. Easy for those that are/aren't taking on a lot of units. His lectures are engaging and overall an understanding professor. I went for the first 2-3 weeks and just started doing the work online instead. I passed with an A+. I would recommend this class.
Amazing professor and amazing material. Course load is very light, with interesting readings and articles.
