funny man
Very cool guy. Enjoys teaching, tries very hard to make it fun. Fair, pretty clear in his explanations, not too hard on homework or grading.

Best quantum chemistry teacher to have, though expectations are not low. Fine instructor with infectious enthusiasm. Hopefully overcaffeination will not shorten hs lifespan.
Super cool professor. Enjoyed his enthusiastic lectures. He may not be the easiest professor in the business but you definitely learn!

Great guy that made his lectures much better than average. Hope he teaches for a while longer and doesn't lose his sense of humor...
The best professor I have had in college! I think he makes hard topics much easier to understand and has a great sense of humor.

good teacher! hard but fair tests, highly recommend but be sure to STUDY!
he is a funny man, but the last part of class really talked over our head. Didn't go into much depth really overview. Sugestion study, study and more study. Tests are hard precide with caution
I enjoyed his class. He's very clear and concise, and has a witty sense of humor.
This guy is the nicest guy you can come across - he's there to help you whenever you need him, but he's so good during his lectures that everything's pretty much spelled out for you. The final is almost exactly like the finals before, so get copies!
Great teacher. He really wants students to do learn so he makes his tests hard but fair. Study the lecture notes. He pulls all of his exam questions from lecture notes.
The best teacher I have ever had. He was very clear and always approachable. He moves fast appropriately and covers a great deal of text. I wish he was my professor again this quarter.
He is a great teacher!! Nice, funny and explains things very well.
The best chem teacher in the chem series. His lectures are understandable and easy to grasp. Just go over the notes and read the book, youre pretty set. Midterms and final are fair.
This guy was by far the best teacher ive had here. he doesnt have to add stupid little jokes to keep ppl entertained, they just come in naturally. he also knows what hes takin bout, which is def a plus. i highly recommend him.
Best teacher i had in the sciences so far
he was pretty cool. He curves the exams so you can pass with at least a C
Outstanding teacher for one of the most difficult classes in the Biochem major. He's a nice guy and very reasonable, but only if you stay on his good side. I remember one student who didn't--I can't remember if they cheated or were hassling him for a grade change, but he came down hard.
Good teacher, very helpful to go to lectures. Easy to understand whats going on in class, just keep up.
Good teacher. Easy to understand and interest is kept.
teacher is okay. better than chem 1A's teacher.
Sweet tempered teacher. Lectures are kinda fast paced, but he handles them well.
this guy really loves chem and really loves teaching! he did a good job lecturing and the tests were ok. You definitly have to study if you want to pass. I would definitly take any class you can from switkes! he's the best!
He is very fair and helpful. His lectures are totally useful. He is very funny. His exams are reasonable if you study the old midterm material from last year. Very recommand to take his class.
Even though I did not do that well in this class, I thought he was a great professor who really cared about the success of his students. He doesn't write tricky tests and he is a fair grader. He is a nice change in teaching if you had Schleich for 1A right before this.
He's a sweetheart. He's an old funny guy who LOVES to teach. Great notes, decent homework, and fair midterms/final. You can tell this guy has a ball of energy and wants everyone to understand and love chemistry the way he does. He's funny, interesting, and I enjoyed the class a whole lot. A+!
This class is fairly easy, he makes the class average a B- which I thought was pretty generous. His lectures are entertaining but fairly useless, stick to the book. his tests tend to be exactly like the sample ones that he puts out so just make sure you know it by heart and you should be okay.
Hey is a good teacher and a great person but never sign up for an 8 am lecture with him. For one he won't make it compatable with the later lecture so you can't really switch around...and his lectures are not that helpful. Hope you took it in HS. He is a funny man and the tests vary in difficulty.
He's very fair. It's good to go to every lecture. Final was a little hard.
SUCH a nice person. makes everyone laugh in class. reminds me of one of those super sweet grandpas that you'd see on a sitcom. good teacher too. lecture notes are easy to copy.
very clear explanations. good lecture structure with humor.
he makes the class interesting. easy midterms and final if you go to lecture and section. he is enthusiastic and tries his best to help everyone understand. he's a great guy
Wonderful class, easy to follow lectures, and was aware of the fact that students don't just suck up the material the second they hear, gave us lots of time for it to sink in.
i loved this class. Gene is the coolest chem professor ever! he made me enjoy chemistry. learned a lot and made the class actually bearable. loved going to lectures because he was fabulous at it. thanks gene!
very interesting and funny teacher, has an accent. tests are pretty easy. take it, it's a good class.
wow! amazing teacher. I didn't even realize how much I knew until I took the test. He teaches in such a way that you don't even know you're learning. He's full of energy and very entertaining.
Gene is an excellent teacher. He has somewhat of a speech impediment that he seems to take on; it becomes part of his character, and it is downright hilarious at times. If you make a condescending remark, he will tend to fire right back with some sort of prediction of you "pumping gas for the rest of your life". some students definitely deservethat
THIS GUY'S LISP DROVE ME ****ING CRAZY. he talks like an idiot with weird annunciations...and his test was totally off the wall- half of the stuff i have no idea where he got it from
clear lecturer, very inteligent guy, good sense of humor. All in all, a great experience.

Gene was great. He has a quarky sense of humor and honestly tries to make general chemistry as fun as possible. If you sit in front I found that he's much more understandable and intertaining.
Good teacher but make sure to always go to lecture. He tends to put stuff on midterms that only come from lecture, plus he makes the tests harder if few people show up to class.
Gene is a Great teacher. And his grading system is fair. His is very clear and even ethusiastic in his presentations. He gives a lot of examples and does not just follow a powerpoint, although there is one if you like. He is very helpful and availible for questions. He wants to see everyone do well. I highly recommend him.
I love this professor. He makes everything so clear and easy to put all the information together. I look forward to chemistry and I typically hate it! He is very easy to talk to and approach plus he makes the learning fun by putting fun pictures and sound effects on his slide show presentation.
He's a good lecturer, knows what he's talking about. Reading the book before class is very helpful in grasping topics. Homework he assigns is directly related to class topics. Tests are pretty hard.
His portion of psycho bio was pretty interesting. He's a funny guy who takes time and energy to make his classes interactive and understandable. He tells you exactly what to study for on the midterm. Pretty Easy and interesting
Easy A. Everyone passes!
Switkes is an enthusiastic lecturer. His good sense of humor and relaxed yet focused attitude make him a very effective teacher. He's always very clear about what to study.

Gene is a great lecturer, and you'll probably hear that from most people who actually attend his lectures; however, if you ever visit him outside of class, you'll note that he's much more serious and much less interested in helping you. He also makes "agreements" with the class during lectures that he doesn't keep. Don't trust him.
It is tragic: this guy was once a decent teacher. Now he is simply old and senile. Acts very bizzarely, lectures are very confusing, sometimes he helps, sometimes not, sometimes acts kindly, sometimes is very rude and arrogant. Shortly, he behaves as a stereotypical old man who is overdue to retire. Take it rather with Ilan Benjamen, if you can.
Funny old man. Tries to keep chemistry somewhat entertaining. The midterms weren't easy, but I think they were reasonable. Really cares about student's progress and wants you to pass.
He was great. Of the other teachers (zavanelli and bridgeman) he was definitely the best. If you read the material and go to class then you'll do well on the exam (he walks the class through a checklist of 95% of the stuff that will be on the test). Very interesting material and Switkes loves what he does. Take this course!
Excellent teacher. Clear, entertainig lectures and a heck of a nice guy.
HE IS AN AWESOME PROFESSOR! He did his PhD in this field so he loooovess it. He is really funny, and teaches really well. He is soo cute too!!
He's pretty good I learned a lot from him. He is good in office hours but he has an attitude of "why don't you understand this" but he'll still go over the material with you. Go to lecture. He's really nice if you show you are trying and make an effort.
Reading the comments, I just don't agree. I thought his lectures were absolutely horrible. He just throws concepts at you, half the time I never understood what exactly he was talking about. And don't even get me started on the notes, in my opinion they were very messy and unorganized, especially compared to Randa's. Go to section.
Gene is another good prof, although he's not going to hold your hand like Randa does(in chem 1a). His notes weren't the best and his lectures can be confusing at times. His exams increase in difficulty after the first midterm. Gene is helpful but the people you want to get help from are your TAs, MSI leaders, and your peers! This class wasn't easy.
I went to lectures and studied and passed even though my TA was useless. Gene was an enthusiastic lecturer and engaged in the class- rare to find in lower div. sciences. I really enjoyed his class. And he puts all of last year's tests on reserve at the library, really straightforward.
I LOVE PROF. SWITKES!!!!! hes so adorable and so friendly!!!!! he will help you if you need help or dont understand. he is very interactive with the class and very funny. i love his powerpoint presentations! lol. i would love to take his class again because he made it so interesting!u still have to study a lot though but you will understand it more
Prof. Switkes' lectures are alright (typical).Gives an average load of homework however you MUST STUDY HARD because exams are VERY difficult.. If you study a lot and go to msi you can probably pull off a B however getting an A is difficult mainly because exams are NOT straightforward;Theres also a lot of things that he wont address & show up on tes
PASSable...but NOT easy to get an A (I had straight A's except for this class got a B-). He will give you a couple of questions on topics not covered in lecture(all the old exams were easy peasy but I noticed they've increased in difficulty..and the ones he wrote for MY class were rather difficult) *sigh* it sucks when prof.'s get harder with time
Very fun teacher. Definitely knows all his stuff and wants students to know it. Very helpful, very encouraging. Tests can be difficult, but if you understand the concepts you should do fine. Highly recommended!
Gene was by far my favorite chem teacher!! the subject wasnt that easy but he made going to class fun and exciting. Hes also really approachable and easy to talk to. Take his class!!!
He's a great lecturer, he keeps the hall engaged in relatively uninteresting areas of the curriculum. He is very concerned about student progress and is always making sure everyone is on track. He provides a lot of outside help through TA's and MSI and office hours. I recommend Switkes for Chemistry!
I don't agree with the comments at all. His lectures are horrible and hard to understand. He talks at the speed of light and just throws stuff at students. He tries to be funny and make the class more interesting but offering jokes at times but I found his jokes quite offensive because he is such arrogant professor. Super Hard class!!
DO NOT BELIEVE the prior posts. Switkes is a pretty horrific lecturer. So bad in fact, that I try going to lecture every time and always end up walking out. This is because he lectures in a "stream of thought" manner. He writes notes with no form or structure and goes too fast through the material. Take this class with Roland.
Nice enough guy. Very old school; completely disconnected from class though. Lectures from power points. Lectures are unorganized and hard to follow. Uses multiple text books (pro: multiple perspectives; con: feels a little scattered). Practice exams are super easy compared to actual exams. Brush up on your partial derivatives. Overall rating: ok.
He is awful. Lectures are hard to understand. Tests are not related to majority of lectures. Just bad.
Switkes is a really helpful teacher! He works with handwritten notes and a powerpoint, so it's not like you have to copy every single word. He also posts the powerpoints online, which is useful. I learned a LOT in his class, and he's really thorough if you ask him questions outside of lecture.
The midterms were manageable, but quite hard. His true and false questions are tricky and is worth a bunch of points. I wouldn't recommend him for Chem 1b.
I tried and got a B. Just go to MSI
Switkes kept Chemistry entertaining, and the material was really interesting. Not the best lecturer/organization; however, overall he is a good professor. Curves the heck out of the class, ended up with an A+. Got a B on first exam, A- on second, and rocked the Final. Dilligence is the key to this class.
Funny guy, plays a bunch of sounds in class to keep you awake/entertained. Subject material is interesting if youre into physics. If you become interested youll do great!
His chem 1b class was not easy, but very doable. I suggest reading the chapter before going to lecture to have a better understanding of the material. He explains the subject very well and is very good at making sense of the complicated topics. Take good notes and make sure to print and take his practice midterm and finals.
Very engaging professor and he puts a lot of effort into his lectures. He cares about his students, he's always checking in with the class if everyone understands and gives online handouts to help understand the lectures. Final and midterms were very fair, as long as you do you work you'll be fine
I sadly, failed his class. I went to MSI every week, got a B+ average on homework. He went really fast during his lectures. A lot of information to memorize for his class so his tests were ridiculous...very hard! I lost interest in chem and this was partially the reeason why I switched out of my major. But he's a nice guy overall!
Eugene tried to keep the class interested, but by the end of the quarter, only a handful of students would show up to class. The lectures are unclear and confusing, and borderline annoying. Read the slides, do his practice tests and expect a lot of self-studying. If you're not confident in your Chem ability, don't take him.
Gene's a down-to-earth guy with an exquisitely nerdy sense of humor (which you hopefully share if you're taking thermo). Entertaining lectures help with the boring material. Doesn't follow the textbook closely so you'll want to attend, but does post notes online. HW is hard, but if you do it you'll ace the class.
Took the active learning class and by far much harder than the big lecture hall class. The exams took me off guard as they were very different from the other chem classes I have taken here. Come to class and section as it matters, and he makes you work hard for your grade. Exams are curved heavily, but amazing prof, TA's, and LA's.
Eugene has a great personality and funny sense of humor. I took the active learning section for Chem1B and the material was very difficult in comparison to any other chem course I've taken. His lectures were mostly interactive and required group work in class and in mandatory section. The material was so interesting that I only missed one class.
Gene is a super nerd who has a lighthearted sense of humor and really cares about his students. He was immensely knowledgeable about the class material, and learned right along with us as he adapted effectively to Webcast and Zoom. He is one of the rare profs that answers questions in a way that helps you understand what you were missing. Take him.
