Paulus is an excellent lecturer and has high standards for her students. I would definitely take a class from her again.
This teacher has a lot of prejudice and she allows it to affect the way she grades and lectures. I, along with many other students felt that we were treated unfairly. I highly recommend finding another instructor if you are going to take chemistry.
Horrible. Her lectures are mildly engaging .. until she stops talking. If she asks you if you understand just say you do. She seems to be angry at something but since you're there, you're good a target as any. She's never wrong either, she does what Ashlee Simpson did on SNL .. it's not my fault.
She will challenge you, call you out and class, and pull you aside for a private 1 on 1 if you are not living up to your potential. She loves her students and wants you to succeed...and by succeed I mean you will know this subject for life.
Horrible teacher. Ridiculed me in front of class. Takes great pride in knowing more than her students, and she shows it.
What a witch.
I think that she must have written the "good" ratings for herself. I do not know anyone who likes her enough to say such nice things.
She's just mean!
When is the school going to fire this lady? This teacher knows chemistry but a bad teacher. I had in mind that she is a bad teacher before i came but she's actually worse that that. I rather take an illiterate person over her. She takes advantage of her power by talking smack to you and you cant tal
I had Eugenia a couple years ago. The classes I took were hard but she warned everyone. As long as you did your homework and read the text she was great. She was always willing to help during office hours and was extremely kind to me during an extended illness I had during chem 1022.
hard class, but I feel better about going to the U of M next year; they can't get tougher than this!
HAHAhahahahaha her class is so bad.
She was always willing to help someone out, and was very clear on her expectations. She expects a lot from you, but her class is worth it. You will really know the material if you put your time into the class. I would definitely take another one of her classes.
I approached this professor expecting a tough egg, but figuring those few who rated her very badly just weren't good students .. oops, what a mistake. In high school I was one of two in chem class who received an A out of a class of 33. My math ACT score is 27. She's delusioned into thinking we're live-in grad students. I dropped. Checking Normand
A professor who expects attentative and intelligent students. Those who are prosper, those who aren't fail. Very simple. This course is not basic chem, there is a prereq reccomended. A person with no basic Chem knowledge will struggle but any back ground makes it a good learning experience. Pay attention, attend class, and study for an easy A.
She ridiculed the whole class one day because we did not know what she was talking about. Further investigation showed that it was a lab for 1062. She was an awful teacher.
had this teacher last year. the content itself is NOT that hard. i had already taken calculus 1 so the math was easy; advanced algebra. she likes to make class a living hell. it is the teacher not the content that makes this class a living hell. for instance, her lab requirements are insane! lab shouold be a 1 credit, but hers are like a 3 credit!
Love the accent.
The subject matter is very simple and understandable, however she freaking things we are going for a freaking Ph.d. She makes fun of students who dont know or who are struggling and tries to confuse you when u giv the right answer. Her teaching method is great but she expects us to know the info exceptionally well. We are sup to finish the exam in
Wow, The problem is you might think you know something, and thats the problem. If you knew you knew nothing that would be something, but you don`t.
She is a great teacher, and after taking her tests you will move 1 step closer to suicide. she believes all we should do in life is study for her damn test and we basically to pass must hav no life...hell, im getting a c and i have dreams of her classes.....just dont take her unless ur on crack or smthing.....
Yes, she is very hard and demanding of her students no doubt, but she can see a students potential and pushes them to do their best. Her so called picking on students is to make them know that they are not just a number to her and that she does care. You will need to put in alot of work to do well on her exams, the more u work, the more u learn.
Very demanding of everyone but herself. Cannot help anyone in lab or lecture. Lives by the motto "You are born alone, you die alone, so figure it out yourself." Imperfect people step aside.
She's a great teacher. People who say nasty things about her did not put in the time necessary to succeed. She is willing to help if you need it. By the time the class is done, if you don't know something it will be your fault and not hers.
You will learn more form this prof then you will from any other. She is so great and cares more about her students then any prof I have ever seen. She knows when people have been reading and studying or not, so do the time and you will really benefit from her. The people that say bad things just don't know what it's like to work for a grade.
Dr.Paulus is my best teacher in the whole world. I've studied in Asia and Australia before I came to the US but there is no one who's comparable to her. She explaines the materials clearly and cares about us alot. People who wrote nasty comments should learn how to be polite and respectful first before they learn Chemistry.
you are all very stupid if you do not like this teacher. on the first day she warned us that class would be hard, & you should have quit if you couldnt cope. if you read over the material 2x, ask her for help a few times & do the hw, you will get an A like I did. AMAZING teacher.i <3 her! if only there were more dedictaed, caring teachers like her!
she was cool! yaya i <3 her. and read the other comments (the good ones) and dont believe the bad ones cos they're not true.shes a gr8 teacher and i highly recoomend her. i love professor! your my hero!!!
She is a terrible teacher. I am a VERY dedicated student and always study as hard as I can. Her expectations are unreasonable. I asked her for help in/outside of class times MANY she rudely told me that I must not study and that maybe I should just DROP the class. She grades tests unfairly; if she knows you and likes you, you get a better grade
Professor Paulus is so amazing. She has taught me more than any other teacher ever could. She is caring and intelligent and knows so much about chemistry; she explains it so well and I finally understand it. Go to her for help and do the homework and the class is bearable. Yes it's difficult but you can do it with Professor Paulus! Amazing teacher!
She just CARES. She will challenge you, question you, and make you make you reach your fullest potential. She taught me more than chemistry. She also gave me a lesson in life about working hard and where it can get you.
very friendly!!
Dr. Paulus is one of the most under rated proffessors, when i asked with all your abilities, why a community college, why not a university, she said she wanted to make a diffrence at a place every is welcome. Notice she will not use powerpoint or even look at notes when she lectures, she is a genius, knows her materials and will challenge you
I have taken classes at private colleges, public universities, and community colleges both at undergraduate and graduate levels. I have never had a professor as condescending and inappropriate as she. Not only did she tell the entire class other students scores, but she consistently made rude comments about the students.
Yeah, she's a tough cookie. She has high expectations, she's really smart, and I think sometimes she expects others to be as smart as her. You know what else? She's darn knowledgeable and she does an excellent job of getting that knowledge across to you! This was a GREAT class, I learned a TON. She was very helpful in her office hours as well.
She's great in her teaching, but YES!!! She will challenge you. She does expect her students to know everything extremely well, but overall, I love her teaching style. She shows lots of examples and very knowledgeable. I'm planning to take her again for Organic Chem!
challenging, but very well taught. tests are reasonable, but read each question a throughly.
The thing about this professor is that she speaks her mind ALL that time. She will say things straight out. The thing I found most challenging about her is when she is asked a questions she will not give a clear answer. I find this wrong because she's the instructor. It's here job to teach. I wouldn't ask if I knew the answer. Be prepared to work.
I too a class from her a few years ago and still have not seen a prof as rude as her. I remember she would make all sorts of comments when we didn't know stuff, and she would ridicule students any chance she got. That said, she really knows her chem and if you don't care about getting mocked, by al means take her classes.
Eugenia is great. I had her back in 2003. You better show up for class though if you expect to learn anything in her course. She was extremeley helpful and an integral part of me being accepted into medical school at the U of M a few years later.
If you don't care about your education, don't waste your time or hers
She is at times hard to understand. Her tests are hard and require a lot of studying. There's no short cut for this class.
I had no knowledge of Chemistry and she broke it down so that I understood it. She is always willing to help her students and seems to really care how her students are doing in her class.
Great Teacher. Hard course, but helpful in making real life comparison to help students understand, better than any of the other Chem teachers at NHCC.
Very moody and does not give study guide for test and accuse students of going to party instead of study singles out some as favorite or not and disrespectful only won award because she is woman and minority
This instructor is worthless. I took the class online and her presence was nonexistant. The semester has been over for a week and I still have not received grades for items dating back to August!! Assignments were not graded prior to tests. Several students made posts on D2L asking about what was going on, it took a month to get a reply. Beware
She singles out favorites and ignores the rest. Misses a lot of class. Test are hard and sometimes does not reflect what she teaches. Comes to class late and runs over time daily. Ask her for practice exams. Dumbs material down somewhat. If you can put up with her sarcasm and study smart you'll be fine. Don't ask for letter of rec unless you have A
Professor Paulus is awesome! She is VERY tough but she helps you understand the material. Its not an easy class. You have to study EVERYDAY. She is not too consistent in her grading. She does have favorites and she does not keep to time but I love Chemistry because of her. Practice problems very helpful. You will fail if you dont study!
Watch out for this lady, she'll change things at the end of the semester.
Stay AWAY from this professor. She is extremely degrating towards students. I went to class everyday, but had to teach myself everything. And when you email her a question, she either doesn't respond or tells you to ask a peer! I've had many professors (I have 2 degrees) and she was BY FAR the worst I've ever had. I don't know how she's employed.
I got A because I worked extra extra hard. She doesn't have any clue what helping students mean. She is too loud and annoying. BUT She is smart and knows her subject very well. Favors some and ignore others.
She is not one of those soft spoken teachers. I am taking her for my O chem(did chem 2 with her). She expects and encourages students to know all not just get A. I wish I took chem 1 with her. She prepares students for MCAT, PCAT or other prof. tests not just pass her tests.
This teacher was not helpful. I would ask her questions or write her emails asking about something. She would answer in one word or otherwise blow me off completely. Work is pretty easy and breaks it down so you understand.
Took online. Teacher is completely absent. Says she's busy at the white house, so why teach if you can't do your job? We're 3/4 done with semester and only have 2 assignments graded out of 20. We all have deadlines and she thinks she's the exception. Homework seems to be easy, but w/ no grades not sure.
This is a very hard class but you will learn a lot, however, Eugenia has her favorites and if your not on of them forget about about getting return emails or help with anything. She is late quite a bit to class, and avg test scores are about 50%. Her lectures are very good and clear. She does ignore students and call on you in class a lot
not recommended
Good Teacher. Rigorous. Learned a lot in her class.
She is the worst teacher I ever had. She had the list of her favorite students , and if your are not one of them, all your effort would be useless. She would not explain the lecture to you if your are not her favorite. Wonder how she got her award of teacher of the year 2008.She thinks her Org Chem is all you need for prof exam.
Prof. Paulus is a genius when it comes to chemistry, and explained concepts in ways that made sense to me. However, her tests were unrealistic; some tests took longer to finish than class time allotted, esp the final. Has time issues. Can be pompous/biting at times, but also can be helpful with clarifying things. Expects a lot from students. STUDY!
Highly recommend her. She is very helpful & easy to approach with questions, will answer them for you. Explains everything very clear, so you leave class fully understanding what was taught. Will work with emergencies/tragedies that are going on in your life. She was absent from class a lot, but had a sub. Never quizzed you on what the sub taught.
This professor is pretty easy. Her tests are extremely straight forward, and the final was not hard at all. The biggest downside of this professor is that she plays favorites and she is no help whatsoever in lab. She can be somewhat condescending at times as well. Didn't like her as a person, but she was okay as a teacher.
Worst teacher ever;I am a good student and have a teaching degree and hated her.Disorganized, hasn't graded any of our work.Rude to students, doesn't answer questions.During lab,she sits up front, checks email, leaves room for extended periods. Unclear expectations, yet yells at students for not doing what she wants,or asking questions about expectation
The worst teacher I've ever had! She's late, belittles students who aren't her "favorites," won't reply to emails, or answer questions in class. Her classroom objectives are nonexistant and she doesn't return graded homework. Due to site guidlines I cannot state what she really is, but it starts with a "R" ends with an "ist"
Knows her stuff, can be abrasive, but lectures are clear and thorough. Don't miss a class!
She is the best and expect you to be the best. Attendance is optional but you are screwed if you didn't attend. She is old school, she write everything on the board and all exams come from it. She is extremely helpful, she goes beyond the message of teaching. If you are planning to like Medical or Dental School, MCAT will be EASY
Dont ask questions unless you're willing and ready to be torn apart! she's hilarious :)
She's really moody. Some days she's cool and mellow, other days she's irritable. If you do poorly she'll treat you differently. She can be funny, and she's better one on one. In lecture she seems to hate getting questions, which is a bad trait in a teacher. She also has absolutely no tact. Has no problem sharing your grades with other people.
She likes good students.
Took her online course and it is TERRIBLE. Good thing is she opens it up all at once so you can do it as fast as you want. Little to no feedback, and if there's any, it is delayed. Online course is just reading and teaching yourself. Never had any idea where I stood in the class due to late grading.
Notes are sent an hour before class and are just full of words, like they look like a book... I have never seen a chem prof try to use this approach and it is not effective.. Lectures are then spent listening to her read these pages word for word. Had to do lots of self-teaching using outside resources, so be ready to put a lot of time in
I took the course in the summer & it's fast-paced & test/quiz heavy. If you're struggling in the class, she'd help you with the material via zoom. She extended the time on exams when students commented that they felt like they didn't have enough time. She's nice & cares about how her students do in the class. She also curved the class's grades.
Instructor Paulus doesn't teach Chem in a comprehensive way, especially if you struggle with any form of ADHD. Lectures involve her reading off a (presumably downloaded) PowerPoint or pre-written notes which made it hard to learn as it isn't engaging at all and I lost focus very quickly. I only found her helpful when I requested my accommodations.
your whole grade is based only on the exams/quizzes and the lab. sometimes she sounds like she has no attitude, or she might be miss understood. honestly, she is the worst instructor I had in my entire life. defiantly don't recommend taking this class with her.
Show up to class every single day. Review your material daily (she gives quizzes). If you have questions, she is super helping at answering them in office hours. She teachers you what you need to know in a very organized, straight forward way. Would highly recommend her as a professor. Be ready to work hard but you will have fun! Great class!
Dr. Paulus had a tough love vibe. She wanted you to succeed for sure, but could be aggressive in a loving way. Instead of ppts, she writes bullet points on the board which I loved. She gave out practice problems in addition to the hw. When studying for exams, really practice the problems from in class.
Took the chem 1062 summer course with her 10 quizzes with one dropped, three tests with one dropped and a 200 point final. She expected you to know chemistry like the back of your hand and loved the phrase "it isn't rocket science". Kind of condescending. I don't recommend taking this class with her unless you're naturally really good at chemistry.
If you do it in class, it will be on the test. There will be no surprises. If she tells you to do a problem 10 times to understand it, do it. I disliked how she wrote things on the board rather than using a projector, as it's hard to see everything. Her lectures are a lot easier to understand if you do the homework before coming to class.
This professor will attempt to read you like a wizard, but just ignore it. She will seem condescending, but that's simply because she is very knowledgable on the subject. However, her "life experiences" show her lack of care for the student's life. Her class *will be* your only priority if you choose to take her class. There is no "life" outside.
Took her summer class and I get that they're going to be harder and more fast paced but wow she was really awful. Super condescending if you didn't understand something. Had a couple 10-point questions on exams and wouldn't give you any points on it if you made the smallest error throughout a problem that took up a whole page.
Professor Paulus has a nice system in this online course where each assignment you do earns points. Once you hit 360/400 pts, you have an A & you're done with the course for the semester. The work was easy & equations are in the textbook. However, the labs are time-consuming and you need to buy the materials you don't have.
Her exams are 17-22 multiple choice and 1-2 open answer problems. The two open answer problems can be worth up to 32% the points on the exam. If you mess up one or both of these problems, your grade is tanked. She writes everything on the whiteboard and only has her syllabus on her D2L. The Mindtap homework is a better teacher than her.
She does not use powerpoints, just writes problems on the whiteboard and solves them without saying much. She is very condescending at times and tells people "Its not rocket science". She knows what shes talking about but not how to tech it in a way that makes sense. If you take this class and chem foundations is an option DO IT.
Personally, I like Paulus, she has a unique/old fashion way of teaching, and people either hate it or love it. Lecture notes are your holy grail because she doesn't post her lectures on D2L, so take good notes. If you ask a question during class, she might roast you but take it with a grain of salt, don't think about it too much its not that deep.
This class had a decent amount of assignments, but they didn't take very long. The labs were kind of annoying because they included a bunch of materials you would not have laying around. You can easily make up points lost from the labs by doing the discussion points, and there is a bunch of extra credit at the end.
She does not respect her students and her exams are really hard!
She picks on students and asks if they understand and if u say yes, she'll ask you to explain and if you don't she'll ask why u don't know. Sometimes she does the works and don't know the answer herself. will ask students to answer check! She gives handouts but runs through it, so it barely helps to review them when the exam is near.
The class is pretty easy if you get the material, but if you don't she won't slow down to help you. She calls out students in the class to answer questions some times picking on them. She can be a good teacher, but also has a heavy accent and goes through material quickly.
Taking her class is not bad if you already have a little foundation in chemistry, but she does not set students up for success in harder chemistry classes if they have no prior knowledge and explains things in a way that is more complicated than necessary. Cold calls people and is not kind if you get the answer wrong. Wasnt terrible, but not a fan.
This professor makes you feel like you're an idiot by singling people out in lectures, and the exams are always different than what's covered in class. If you don't put in hours of studying outside of lecture you would fail from how little she explains the topics. When you email her you're left with short 1-2 word responses with no clarification.
Prof Paulus is a very difficult professor. Chem is hard enough and she likes to pick on people and kind of singles out the people who are having more of a struggle with the material. She only knows the names of the students she likes and the rest she enjoys to pick on in lecture. DON'T take her chem class unless you want to pass lol, my mistake.
Horrible professor. Professor Paulus only cares to learn few people's names in class and calls on them every lecture. She singles people out and makes fun of them in front of the class if they don't know how to do something we learned five minutes ago. She doesn't explain things when you ask her questions and just expects you to know how to do it.
One of my main problems with this class is the lack of material online to study with and just how technologically illiterate she is the only online material is a textbook she constantly disagrees with and tell us to do it "her way", she also loves to single out people and make fun of them in class. her class is hard she just makes it worse.
WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. DO NOT TAKE HER. I AM WARNING YOU!!!!!!!!!
SO BAD. DO NOT TAKE HER. SHE IS THE WORST PROFESSOR AT NHCC. TAKE THIS COURSE ANYWHERE ELSE WITH A BETTER PROFESSOR FOR YOUR OWN SAKE.
The class is so hard for someone that has never taken chemistry in high school, and she likes picking on people, and the tests are difficult, I specially feel like I learned better using mind tap and online resources than her class.
This professor struggles to explain concepts clearly and often belittles students in class. She is difficult to work with and tends to question students' honesty when they address grading errors or flawed exam questions. She does not provide meaningful support and does not seem invested in students' success. I recommend avoiding her class.
She is genuinely just a mean person. She picks on people and the entire semester makes them feel so little. One time, a PAYING ADULT was struggling to answer a question about something we had JUST learned and she goes to another student who she knows has the answer and says “put us out of our misery”. do not waste your time and money on her.
The absolute worst professor I have ever encountered. Took her chem 2 class and it was by far the worst course I have taken. Not only is the course difficult itself, but she is also an awful teacher. She was never helpful and straight up rude. This class bombed my GPA. If you want to pass chemistry, take it somewhere else with a different teacher.
Do not take. She grades so hard and is not helpful when you ask questions.
This professor is a mean person, a bad teacher, and created an awful experience for me. Her exams and quizzes are too long for the time available and she expects you to be literally perfect. Really disappointing class and professor.
She writes everything on a whiteboard, does not post anything online so if you miss class, goodluck. When it comes to exams the things she taught in lecture will sometimes not even come up on the exam. Her exams are mostly hand written and she wants you to copy everything Exactly how she wrote it on the board, on the exam for FULL points.
Dr. Paulus was very rude to students on multiple occassions. She does not give nearly enough time to complete quizzes in class, and intentionally includes common wrong answers to trip you up. I'm taking Chem II at a different school, so that I don't have to have her again.
Take this as your sign not to take her at all. Transfer to another school if you have to take a chem credit. She switched from having quizzes and the first three exams online to making everything in person and shortened the time limit so you have no time to actually do anything. She expects you to understand everything right after she teaches it.
Take this class if you want to lower your GPA.
What a unpleasant professor, to put it simply Paulus is a bully. She is clearly a very sad person with a very sad life who just takes it out on her own class and students. Her class is very poorly run and she is a horribly harsh grader. Shameful that people like this can just ride off tenure and not have any consequences.
DO NOT TAKE HER. half your grade is your final. She is mean! would berate you in front of the class if you didn't answer a question right. had pop quizzes randomly. would rush through maybe half a chapter, then give you a pop quiz the next day. if you have to take her TRANSFER!.
