Very picky in every aspect, including tests. Grades like it's an English 1a class and not art history. Uptight environment.
It is difficult to understand her english. She is picky on the grading of papers but not exams. I think she is an ok teacher, but need coffee before class.
one of the better art teachers i've had. i also took an art history class, which was a difficult class, but it prepared me for more art history classes at Humboldt University. i took a drawing and painting course, both of which were excellent.
She's hard to understand. Her critiques aren't useful; her manner is demeaning to the students. At times she brings her personal problems into the class. I do not recommend this instructor at all.
She knew what she was taking about but she's a royal pain in the butt. She's picky, very critical, and during tests she watches you like a hawk. It makes you want to punch her in the face. Cheaters go hell!
She is very hard and unforgiving. Nothing is ever good enough. Most of the class has to resubmit most of their works (so why even bother). She doesn't really teach you how to draw, she just shows you once. NOT A FUN CLASS!!
DO NOT TAKE ART WITH HER! She's very unfair in her grading. Any papers are graded like you're in an english class and most papers and art works need to be resubmitted (so there's really no point in trying hard 'cause you'll have to redo it anyway). If at all possible take art with someone else.
Eun Hwang is a good art teacher. I have taken two classes with her and have learned a great deal from her. The only difficulty for me, in her classes, were my drawing. I love cartoons and it showed in my drawings. She encourages her students to draw more realistic drawings. :P She allows redo's and is very clear in detail and explanation.
It was a nightmare, Hwang is totally hard to understand. She has clear favorites in the class and is demeaning to most other students. She gives no respect and little instruction. Outside if class she's very unhelpful and unavailable.
I am not an artist but I enjoyed this medium very much. It is hard to understand this teacher but she is a very good artist.
DO NOT TAKE HER! She's very condescending, narrow-minded, and very hard to understand!
I took her summer class, and I got an A because I attended every class and studied my notes. Although she's a little hard to understand, she provides tons of handouts so you have a lot of reference material. A perfect candidate to fulfill art requirements for transferring.
She knows art. But she has a strong accent. HARD TO UNDERSTAND. Could not follow the lectures.
TERRIBLE, DO NOT TAKE!!
Excellent instructor if you truly wish to learn something!! Take good notes and always read them!! Be there for every lecture!!
I couldn't understand her, and she was rude to the students
If you are a serious art student - take this instructor! Her knowledge of the subject matter is impressive! She does expect you to strive for excellence but,she will help you if you get discouraged.
looks down at students. very rude at times. hard to understand and follow because of thick accent. not helpful at all nor flexible.
I really enjoyed this teacher. A little hard to understand at first due to accent but willing to repeat herself if neccessary. You get out what you put in. If you study from the study guide she gives you, you will do well. She is big on attendance and class participation. She is very knowledgable and you can tell she enjoys teaching.
I took my gen ed art class with Prof. Hwang. I suck at art, but she was so encouraging and challenged me to get the most out of it, rather than trying to knock out my gen ed. credits with no effort. She's such a dear! Great teacher. Love her accent!
Prof. Hwang is a wonderful teacher and is passionate. Those who do not like her are usually the people who got on her bad side, and they probably gave her a reason. She's tough but if you really want an A you can get it. Attend class, participate, take notes, study and you'll do great. Her accent is strong but she repeats if you ask, w/o offense.
I dropped her class. I didn't like the way she taught, instead of appreciating peoples efforts, she only told them what they did wrong. "Make it darker." "It's too big." "It's too small." It's a beginning art class, you don't have to be so tough. I took it for enjoyment, and I ended up wasting my time.
I HAVE NEVER WORKED SO HARD FOR A 3 UNIT CLASS!! THIS TEACHER IS RIDICULOS AND MAKES THE CLASS A DRAG, SHE HAS A HEAVY KOREN ACCENT AND IS DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND!!
Buyer Beware!! Prof. Hwang is really good but be prepared to do LOTS OF WORK!! Do not take this class if you are working full time or are taking a full time school schedule...you just won't have the time cause the homework is nonstop. I really would have enjoyed the class otherwise though.
She is very tuff, but if you listen you will improve. Although even if you did your best, and spent 2 weeks on the same drawing, she will point out what you did wrong, not what you did right.
Prof. Hwang is probably one of the best professors I know that is passionate about teaching. Although she may have an accent, she is still understandable to listen. Her lectures are straight forward and her exams are strongly based on the study guides she gives out; just study the study guides and you can get at least a C on her exams.
This instructor is awful! She is poorly prepared and doesn't knw some of thigns she teaches, the students can't even ask her questions. She's very moody. I will not take another class from her again and wouldn't recommend her to anyone!
Excellent teacher. She has a lot of knowledge in art and teaches it well. She has a bit of a Korean accent, still understandable.if you dont understand she will repeat so you do.Only thing is she is strict about attendance and assigns a lot of papers. easy grader tho. also dont buy the book! i never used it.waste of money. asigns nothing in it.easy A
This professor is terrible! She is mean and if you ask her a question she will make fun of you. Stay away! She even made me cry because she said my art was terrible and laughed at it! DONT TAKE HER!!!
I did not like her at all. She is extremely boring and makes you memorize insane amounts of stuff for the tests. NO sense of humor at all. She will stop the class and yell at anyone for the tiniest little bit of noise. WORST CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN. STAY AWAY!!!
Terrible teacher!! was always sick. very harsh. never had anything positive to say, EVER. heavy accent. gave me and F on my mid term for beginners art! way too much work for a dumb general ed. beginning art class. Know a few ppl who have taken her before, had the same horrible experience. DO NOT TAKE!!
If you are really good at art or are willing to devote numerous hours every week to drawing...then I would take this class. If not, I wouldn't! I busted my bootie for a B in elementary art! Teach is blunt and critical, but a great artist and nice person outside of class.
she SUCKS at teaching made me redo every project endless nights of no sleep at all
Hwang is so difficult as a person and professor. Extremely moody, always criticizing. The class was dead silent, no one could talk or do anything without her permission. It is her way or no way at all. I do not recommend.
She is a nice teacher, but she's hard to understand because of her thick Korean accent. I would recommend ARTH to anyone who likes it, but choose a diff prof. She's somewhat monotonous and boring-makes you want to fall asleep in class. WARNING: I wouldn't recommend this class over the summer if you choose this teacher 3hrs twice a week is too much.
It's really really hard to understand this teacher, and her notes are long and tedious. She's kinda rude and really picky about things. I wouldn't recommend her for art history in the summer, the classes are too long and boring.
This teacher is a total B-word. Take any other class but hers. Very difficult to understand. Her rules are unclear. She plays favorites. Don't try talking o her about any issues... like i said, she's a B! Super rude!!!
If you like to be referred to as an animal, and constantly degraded... take this course! Yes it's true, she refers to her students as cats and dogs. Very RUDE! She constantly has PMS. Her assignments are unclear and her grading is impossible. Hate is a strong word... but appropriate.
This is the most ridiculous gen ed class EVER. Let me sum it up... heavy Korean accent, death by power point, RUDE, you will be reffered to as an animal for go sakes, Grade A papers become a C or D with nothing but negative feed back. Horrible professor.... if you like ARTH, get a different teacher!
hate, hate, hate, this teacher. She definitely needs to get a life. Do not take this class over the summer, by the end of the three hour class you either want to punch her or yourself in the face. Don't do it man!
HARD class but intersting. Eun is a TUFF professor but I think she was great. If you follow directions, you'll be fine. I wouldn't recoomend this course if you're looking for an easy A. She doesn't screw around.
Horrible class. ruined my summer. Prof hwang acts like everyone is going to be an ARTH major. This was way too tuff for a friggin gen ed class. Teacher is way mean.
Okay, the lectures are boring, but I got an A with relatively little work. You just show up, take notes, read the notes twice the night before, and ace the tests. Hwang gives lots of extra credit and candy and highlighters to good students, plus responded to all my emails within half a day.
extremley hard, assignments are extremley unclear. nothing creative or fine. you will not put your pencil down once in the whole semester.
unless you want a semester of hell, DO NOT TAKE HER..for anything. she gives the most bizarre assignments, not all of them are even due, and u get more essays than an english class that she likes to describe as "awkward" i swear, this class is beyond a nightmare.
teacher from another planet. you look at her huge assignments with disbelief. no reason a 3 unit class should ever be this class. same thing every day., worse teacher i have EVER had, no exageration
do not take classes from this teacher. assignments are very uncreative and unclear. she has to thick of an accent to understand her and she commonly screws up on her english speaking as well. the study guides for tests are ridiculous and cover too much info. her classes are so boring and you do the same thing every class. this is a stressful class!
i took her my first semester of college- and she almost scared me away from the whole experience. I had countless sleepless nights working on assignments that ended up not being due-- she doesnt make anything clear and is the meanest person you can possibly meet. More essays than an english class and likes to describe work as "awkward"
You must come to class! Professor Hwang is perhaps the most knowledgeable professor I have ever had. She knows art history inside and out. She is also more than willing to help her students during her office hours, especially on the several very challenging writing assignments she gives. A very difficult professor, but you will learn a lot.
Phenomenal class! First she is extremely knowledgeable and very passionate, especially about Michelangelo. She wants you to succeed and does everything possible for you to do so. Come to class, take notes, and study the study guides she provides and you will get through. Oh and fyi, she drops your lowest test score, plan ahead!
FIRE THIS TEACHER!!! I even got an A in the class and I HATED it!! You can't understand her accent, she's rude, she is demeaning to her students, and does not make anything interesting! DEATH BY POWERPOINT, trust me. If you have an opinion about anything, go elsewhere! She loves to kick people out of her class.
She's a good teacher I've had her for two classes on art history, learned what I needed failed a few papers but still got an A.
To start, it is extremely difficult to understand her lectures, making it hard to take notes. She is rude to her students and and class is dull. The entirety of each class period consists of powerpoint slides. I don't recommend taking her.
The class was a nightmare and unfortunately a total waste of time. I learned nothing, she was not at all clear on assignment instructions, she was rude to several students many times during the semester, and the course level was well below college work. I do NOT recommend her; I definitely will not ever take another class from her again!
AMAZING!!!! She is a tough teacher and she expects her students to participate and do their work. She is not linient with slackers. She teaches well and is very clear. Recomend her highly. But please only those who actually want to be at college and can act like responsible college students.
I have never hated a prof like i HATE this woman. She singled me out and picked on me because i have talent(or so i was told by almost all of my classmates). I spent on avg.17 hrs on each HW, and she never gave me full credit! There is TOO MUCH HW! Unfair grading! She laughs at student's mistakes and makes you feel stupid. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!
The professor provides sheets for you to write notes on.take good notes otherwise you're screwed when exam time comes around. Be sure to keep up with the reading as there are pop quizzes. HWANG IS RIDICULOUS WHEN IT COMES TO THE ESSAY'S! She put "awkward" all over my paper. Way too much information that is not necessary for a general ed class.
I've never before wished death on a human being. I worked tirelessly to ace her exams (which I did) and to write essays which follow extremely vague criteria that are never completely understood. Despite my extreme hard work and patience in this God-awful redundant nightmare of a class, I ended with a D. Beware, each absence is a letter grade off.
She's a great teacher. She covers everything she puts on her tests and she makes it easy for you get an A. But you've got to pay attention and you've got to show up. She wants you to participate (after all you're paying to be there). She does everything she can to help you get an A, but you have to do the work. Great teacher!
She is a good teacher the only problem is english isn't her first language, so there are times you won't understand what she is saying. You will only fail this class if you don't pay attention or participate.
She has an interesting class and you get used to her accent after a few classes. But her assignments are impossible to get more than a D on. If you are going to take this class, get all the extra credit you can get because you are going to lose a ton from her assignments.
Took her last Fall and got an A. That being said, though her art history class is an easy A if you keep track of your points, it will be a very frustrating semester. Pros: gives extra credit capriciously/often. Cons:incredibly vague with essay prompts. Even if your essay shows a mastery of the material, you're almost guaranteed a C or lower.
This class is very hard. You need to study very hard for exams and know ALOT of specifics. Exams consists of about 20 t/f, 20 multiple choice, 10 matching, and 3 short essay. It may not seem hard but you really must know and remember alot of specifics. Papers are so-so, but if you don't follow her directions EXACTLY you WILL get an F. Good luc
DON'T take Prof. Hwang if you have ANY choice at all. Her lectures are painfully dull, her tests unbelievably detailed/long, & papers? Librarians have told students they've personally asked her to stop assigning the same project(s) every semester its so hard to find sources she'll accept. Oh, & you're marked absent if you get up to use the bathroom
DO NO TAKE THIS TEACHER FOR ANY CLASS EVER. SHE IS HORRIBLE! I have never written a review on here but her horribleness spurred me to do so for the first time. Her tests are incredibly hard, her essay prompts make no sense at all, and it's impossible to to sit through her class without falling asleep. Just don't do it. Trust me, you will regret it.
She has a lot of passion about what she's teaching and I think that shows in her lectures, however it's a lot of memorization. The best wasy to succeed in her class is to immediately memorize the material as soon as possible. Her tests are a little difficult, but if you study you should pass. Overall she's a good teacher.
Horrible teacher!!!! She compares her students as dogs and cats... She expects the material to already be known since she has been studying it for years...RIDICULOUS. And makes you feel stupid for asking a question. DO NOT take her!!You'll regret it.
Excellent teacher. Changed my major to art history after I had her. Very informed on topic. Easy A on exams, her study guide shows EXACTLY what will be on test, no tricks. NO HW NO BOOK LOTS OF XC. People get scared of her, because they are scared of a challenge. All the kids who don't drop get As, the rest wuss out.
If you have a choice, do not take Prof Hwang. Her english is deplorable, and you never know what she expects of you on any of her papers. Her tests are hard, papers are harder and her policies are typically absurd and/or unknown until you get your paper/test back with an F on it. Good luck if you have no choice.
Mrs. Hwang is literally one of the worst teachers I have ever had. She is unhelpful, Rude, and barely teaches her subject everything she does is on a powerpoint and she simply reads directly off it. you never ever needs to read a page from her book. At one point she even completely stopped class and didnt teach when 1 person cell went off.
DO NOT TAKE HER ONLINE CLASS! As of right now, most of the class is not passing. I'm sure that she is much better in the classroom face to face. With the online course there is to much of a language barrier and she expects you to understand things that she hasn't even taught. This is an intro douse, and she is teaching it as an advanced level. If you are not an art history major I definitely recommend taking another course instead of art history or at least take it with the other professor.
All I can say is why is this lady a teacher when she makes it more than obvious that she hates kids. Besides the fact that no one can understand a word she says she has zero compassion for her students. She is completely unwilling to work with you and took away any joy I might have had for this class. I do not recommend this "teacher."
PLEASE never enroll in any of her classes. She is extremely unfair, judgmental, vague and overall egotistical. Rather than answer questions on assignments, she consistently fails you with no explanation. She claims that the quality of my work was that off at least an F students, while my transcripts read A's and B's. This class is not worth it!
i am an art history LOVER, but this woman is not for someone who wants to enjoy art! or even learn about it! she is so wrapped up in her "note handouts" (where she prints up the notes and you fill in the blank words for points) and attendance that she loses sight of the lectures. rude. no english. dropped for 3 exc absences. her syllabus is law.
She is THE very worst teacher I have ever had to deal with. Nothing is ever right, encouragement is never given, and it is impossible to get a perfect score. I learned nothing about art design that I did not previously know, and she enjoys assigning busy work. Do not take her; it will ruin your semester and your view of art.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!!!Ever! She tries to make the class something it is not. Art is here for our enjoyment...Art is not here so we can memorize 50,000 slides for a test! In short do yourself a favor and don't ever think about taking this class. If you even hear the words Eunyoung Hwang...run as fast as you can!!!
She is definitely not the worse. Her korean accent is a little hard to understand but you get use to it. She gives note outlines, goes over all what you were suppose to read, and extra credit. Attendance is big. The tests are somewhat hard but not if you study what it says to on her test study guides. And she really does want you to pass.
One of the worst teachers I've ever had in my life. She is unfriendly, unapproachable, and very rude(she makes homophobic statements). She is unclear in her instruction, thus her tests and papers are incredibly hard. She will make you hate art. Someone fire this woman.
Professor Hwang is a very interesting teacher. Her lectures are no nonsense and easy to follow even with a thick accent. Her tests are a breeze if you study but she's crazy about missed classes. You miss one and you're on her hate list. Just study like crazy for the tests and be on time for class and you'll find she's actually really fair.
Very strict prof. She is TOUGH but FAIR. Do not believe anyone who sez you can get an ez A. If you want to succeed in her class, you will need to be serious, apply yourself, and study hard. She appears unapproachable, but if you ask her she will do everything possible to help you. I respect her, she is simply misunderstood by most students.
I absolutely LOVE Professor Hwang. I took nine classes from her and walked away from each one with so much more knowledge. She's tough and she expects a lot, but she will give you the tools to succeed if you spend some time during her office hour. If you're looking for an easy class to had on to a semester, this is probably not it.
Professor Hwang has college level expectations, and too many of the kids at this school are babied into thinking they can treat it like high school. You're paying to be here. Do the work and move on. Art History is an easy subject and she is as knowledgeable as they come.
BAD teacher! Don't take her and you'll save yourself A LOT of headaches!
Best teacher you could ever have if you really want to learn something. She doesn't put up with highschool antics and expects you to be there with your homework done. Interesting and I want to take her art history class. Her accent is not that noticable or, you will get used to it. Great Teacher.
Do not miss class, its part of your grade. Seems hard & unapproachable, but if you go to office hours will go over everything with you. Lots of chances to earn points during the semester, drops worst exam grade, and uses multiple choice tests. Strong accent, but you get used to it.
This is my second time attempting to take this course. She's still as rude, difficult, and harsh as I remember. I'm the type of student who gets A's or B's on Gen Ed and English writing assignments. She gave me an F even though I followed the rather vague instructions. Take English Lit or something else! Save your GPA!
This class is RIDICULOUSLY hard. Her accent is extremely difficult to understand and she is very rude and unencouraging. Her class, tests, and papers revolve around memoriziing hundreds of terms. If your opinion differs from her's on a piece, YOU are wrong, and there is no discussing with her. I would strongly recomend not taking her class.
She is a nice lady, but it is very hard to understand her accent, especially in art because there are many new terms to learn and hard to pick up on when she says them. Her tests are absolutely over kill and I feel she takes the subject a bit too serious. If her tests werent so overkill it wouldnt be too bad ,but even then I wont take her again.
She gives you a study guide. Read the book and go to class; so long as you're not inherently stupid you'll get a good grade.
It was definitely not an easy class. I honestly did not do too well on the tests, but if you work hard, show up to class on time, do all the extra credit she offers, you'll do more than well in the class. I was definitely not expecting to get an A in this class, but I did! I enjoyed her class overall and learned a lot.
She is very rude and will laugh at you for simple questions. She tried to drop me from her class for missing one class all semester. Her tests and written assignments are graded very harshly. She is rude and unencouraging. She is very hard to reason with. She is a headache. I highly recommend avoiding her class.
I loved her class. Very passionate. She gives organized notes and a study guide that will list everything you need to know for each test. If you seek her out, she really tries her best help. She's nice. Go to her office hours. Go a few days before an essay is due. Don't think this is just an easy A. You will have to put in effort.
Overall not a terrible prof. Very strict "no electronic device" policy; often when asking her a question, she will laugh and roll her eyes, or make you feel that you are an inconvenience/dumb; has an accent which can sometimes be hard to understand; tests and assignments are very specific, beware!; rewards good grades; is an artist, passion for art
Someone may find her class difficult, but if you listen carefully and resort to the textbook for further understanding, the content is not hard to understand. And the information she covers is detailed and helpful. But if you just want to retreat yourself for an unimportant class this might not be the right choice.
Sure her accent is tough to understand but you get used to it. Rate my pro. says many cons but w/my recent experience you should read the book for an 'A' on exams. or get get a 'B' just by notes she provides. remember pictures and some info and you're good. As for the papers. they can be tough but go talk to her. It will help you and your grade.

The teacher is hard to understand and I have really good hearing. I can only comprehend 1/5 of what she says and she pronounces almost everything differently. Anytime I needed help it was useless because she didn't really help she just sat there and would tell me I'm wrong and make me feel real dumb about myself. Overall bad teacher
Worst teacher ever! She drowns the students with notes. Her exams are confusing, she is not understanding. very rude, and has a very bad attitude!
She is really nice and easy to work with. Ask for clarity if you don't understand, which does happen. The exams are easy and you're given plenty of time for the research paper. DON'T! Plagiarize. It could ruin the class from having the paper become extra credit if the class does well on the exam too. I recommend her.
While I am interested in what she teaches us, the class is overall pretty dull. It's so strict and monotonous that you almost dread coming to class. I've also recently turned in a paper and she marked "awkward" on an entire paragraph of where i described how my favorite art piece made me feel and what it meant to me. How incredibly demeaning.
Horrible excuse for a teacher let alone a professor looks for every excuse to drop students-I feel sorry for students who unknowingly sign up for this hellish class. Lesson 1 Read &Heed these REVIEWS! the majority of students have a legit complaint here! there isnt enough space here to describe this awful experience-dont waste time or $ or energy!
Prof. Hwang places a lot of importance on class participation and attendance, she will make you stay after class if she sees your phone out. At times, it can be difficult to understand certain words she mispronounces. She doesn't really go over tests at all. Her tests are easy, if you keep up with the reading assignments.
doesnt matter if you call her Eun or Eunyoung Hwang (both are listed on this site same awful person) you'll regret if you get into any class of this sorry excuse of a "teacher-class participation does not mean asking questions-*she'll do the"roll-eyes".Her version of basic ARTH famous artists knowledge is even wrong!Avoid this nightmare!TotalWaste!
She's difficult to understand because of a thick accent. She claims she wants students to ask questions and see her during office hours, but she rarely responds to emails. The syllabus was changed halfway through the semester. Lectures are straight from the book (boring). Wouldn't have gone to class if she didn't make us sign in for participation.
Yes, Hwang has an accent, but I understood everything she said in her lectures. She puts up a PPT and you just have to take notes most of the period. Her class is simple and straight forward. The tests are not bad at all as long as you look over your notes. The paper is rough at first but she will help you if you ask. Overall good professor.
Simply put, NO. Stop! If this is the last class you need to transferreceive your AA, wait until next semester and register with a different teacher. Extremely difficult to understand, the tests are ridiculous for what the class is, and the research paper due at the end of the semester is graded like an advanced ENGWR class. Death By Powerpoint! NO
Good professor. Very intelligent. Strict no electronics policy. If you can't bare to be away from your electronics for a short amount of time do not take her class. She will not tolerate you. She has an accent but she gives the best lectures and helps as much as possible to guarantee good grades. Slightly difficult papers.
Taking this professor for ART 300 was the worst decision I have ever made. I DO NOT RECOMMEND. The homework projects that we had on average took 10+ hours to finish each one. She is VERY hard to understand, as is her homework handouts. Many of my classmates FAILED homework projects because of her inability to structure her handouts. DO NOT TAKE.
I do not recommend this teacher especially if you are taking several other classes. The class period is pretty easy, but boring, because it's just lecturestaking notes, but her tests are REALLY hard. She puts literally everything on the study guide and expects you to remember everything. Also doesn't always respond to your emails for missed notes.
Prof. Hwang seemed like a nice enough person, but she is the kind of Prof. I usually try to avoid. Really harsh grader on papers, but fair on tests and exams. Did stick everyone with a pop quiz and the lecture was really long.
The class isn't necessarily hard, but is mostly memorization. There are lots of lectures and notes you need to take. She is a little hard to understand with her accent however she is helpful when you ask for help. Make sure you are checking your email because she emails frequently.
This class is extremely difficult, no matter what you do it is not good enough. I DO NOT Recommend, she is very hard to understand. Tells you everything you are doing wrong with assignments but doesn't help you improve she looks at it and walks away. Constantly talks about her Dr. whether it's medical or psychiatric I'm not sure.
As a painting teacher, she moves very fast, and she expects you to pick up the technique immediately. Also she only focuses on technique and not at all on creativity. Be prepared to paint the same bowl of fruit over and over again.
I took the hybrid course and it was bearable. You have to spend at least an hour taking notes on the lecture online unless you don't get credit. She wants to make things very clear to the students yet she can be a little harsh. This class was eh..
Had to work hard for this grade. Doesn't really respect students and makes you feel dumb when you ask questions. Would definitely have taken someone else had I known better.
I'm an Art Major and found her boring and not a good professor. She can be arrogant and not approachable. I do not recommend taking her.
Very disappointed in the teacher. She was hard to understand and when asked for clarification, she was rude. I would not recommend taking her class.
My experience is Prof. Hwang's ARTH 300 class was VERY straightforward. She actually does a lot of work in organizing her lectures and she even gives you a hand out for taking notes on different slides that she presents. It's actually a very easily class to get an A in IF you review those notes! That's most of what she expects of you.
She was read straight from the lecture, need to read if you really want to understand the content. Tests are straight from the lectures, and she is clear about what is on the test, but it is an insane amount of content. 2 essays, failed both due to vague and poorly explained rubrics. Dislikes anyone who is taking the class as a requirement
Prof Hwang is very scary at first. She has a thick accent and is hard to understand, but this gets easier throughout the semester. You have two papers and three exams in the class, and graded on how often you show up. Your lowest exam score is dropped. My tip would be to make flashcards for each exam! Well worth your time!
Extremely generous with her time and extra credit. Mainly lectures, but the handouts make it all easy to follow and study. LOTS of information, but the exams are clearly outlined. No homework - two writing assignments, participation, and a research paper. So much extra credit. She's a fair grader and a nice lady. Got used to her accent.
Lots of material, but the exam outlines are very clear. Three exams (worst one is dropped), two writing assignments, and participation points. LOTS of extra credit. Take good notes, study the notes, use the outlines, and you'll be good to go. Expects rules to be followed. Very generous with her time and gives good feedback on writing.
Prof. Hwang's accent is very thick and difficult to understand. I took a hybrid class and she is so overly focused on student organization that she actually grades you for how long you are logged in! Excessive amount of handouts and test content. Be prepared to be treated like it's high school.
Worst teacher. Her accent is really thick. Pays attention to how many hours are spent online. She makes you write a ton of notes weekly, 3 long exams with essays and two writing assignments, grading system is ridiculous, her assignments are very unclear. I don't know why she is even teaching. She treats you like a high schooler
Worst essay grader I have ever had the displeasure of encountering. You can have a perfect essay and forget to put headers on every page then get half your score taken away. Completely ludicrous. Rest of the class was easy and full of memorization. I am still salty about those essays however. Get your essays reviewed by her before you turn it in.
I took the hybrid version of ARTH 300 and ended up having to drop it. Hwang bases most of your grade on how much time you spend online. She is very hard to communicate with and the tests were harshly graded on material we had only covered briefly. Do not take her class!!
A lot of people don't Like Prof. Hwang for silly reasons but she is genuinely a good professor. She is clear about what she expects and as long as you review the lectures she posts on D2L a few times before the tests and show up for class you will get an A in the class. She assigns reading but none of it is on the test, I never read and got an A.
Professor Hwang is a poor professor. Her lectures are super long lists of art pieces and concepts that defy organization. She also assigns essays that are too long for the very narrow subject she forces you into (such as four pages about one painting). I would find another professor if you need ARTH 300.
This professor was DEFINITELY the worst I have EVER had. First of all, her accent is so thick that you cannot understand a majority of what she says. I got good grades on all work turned in. She failed me because of attendance. If you are a good student concerned with keeping your GPA up, don't take this class. She will ruin you without a care.
Terrible professor, she has a thick accent which makes it hard to understand her. Test are way too long and are hard to study for because there is so much content to cover. 3 essays in which her instructions were very unclear. Bring your papers to her office hours before you turn it in, it will help with your grade. Lectures are boring.
She is the worst professor I have encountered in my entire academic career. Her lectures are long and have little to no relevant info to the exams (which are way too long for a short 7-8 week hybrid course). Online lecture notes are required to study and she will drop you if you do not log more than 3 hrs viewing. Take another prof for this subject
As a person, she is very nice & respectable. As a professor, worst I have encountered. Classes are nonstop lectures, very little opportunities for participation. I don't mind lectures usually but they are delivered poorly, difficult to follow & it's nonstop, no time to take information in. Grades very tough on papers, & nitpicks on technicalities.
Professor Hwang is articulate, professional, talented, and an inspiration to all Students. Her expertise and amazing sense of style, coupled with her cultural background, makes her an asset to Folsom Lake College. She works hard to ensure your success as a student. She cares about her class. I am honored and fortunate to have her instruction!
Hwang is one of those professors that even the best students learn to dislike. Her tests, while overlapping the lectures, feels very vague in what it is asking when it wants specific answers. 90% of this class is lecture notes, of which only 15% or so makes it on to the tests. In addition, essays are vague and format matters more than content.
The tests are pure memorization, so you'll need to make flashcards. During lecture she hints what will be on the test, plus she gives study guides. She's picky about the papers, so make sure you see her in office hours. Otherwise I thought the class was easy and inspiring. Hwang is very passionate, and she really does care about her students!
Didn't open my book. Lecture covers it all. The book did help for studying but not mandatory IMHO. Lecture intensive, lots of note taking each class. The study guides for exams are extensive. It was not an easy A. I would recommend if you can memorize terms easily. Flashcards saved me. 3 tests, she drops the worst grade. Overall a good class.
She is difficult to understand even after you get used to her very thick accent. Don't bother asking questions because she will just repeat what she already said. Her class was very easy, and I learned almost nothing. Take good notes to study for the tests.
While Hwang is a nice person her skills as a teacher are incredibly lacking. Her class consists of almost entirely rote memorization to pass tests with little of anything that requires actual thinking. Her accent is manageable but her constant grammar and spelling errors make understanding test questions and instructions needlessly hard.
Buyer beware. Thick accent. No electronic note taking allowed. Rude to students. (Obviously does not want to be recorded she would be reported for behavior). Easily annoyed when you ask a question or to have something repeated. Makes mean comments to students, condescending attitude towards people that may need help. Unapproachable. Avoid.
Prof Hwang's class consists of only lectures. There's so much information to learn in so little time, and Hwang teaches it in a way that is impossible to learn. Her tests are crazy tough so make sure you do the review sheet that she hands out. And if you don't follow her directions exactly on a paper, you'll be sure to get a bad grade.
Extremely tough grader. Expects you to correct and redo entire assignments that aren't to her liking. Often made rude comments to students. Blamed the entire class for working too slowly when she failed to accurately judge how long a project should take, incredibly disrespectful of students' time. Easily the worst professor I've ever had.
Frequently made insensitive comments. Told students that their work was boring or "looked like it was done by their evil twin" on multiple occasions. She seems to think that she's being funny, as she will often laugh in your face after saying things like this- yes, really. Often sends home 8+ hours of work per week, not counting redo's.
Not only does she ridicule you for not doing art assignments to her "perfect" speculations; the redo's you need to do, are 'never enough'.Beware if you defend your work, she will mock your work in front of the class. She assigns 8+ hours of work yet shames if not done to her wants. Brags about angering people to the degree of needing police escorts
This teacher is an excellent Art History teacher. However, unfortunately she fails at being an Art teacher. Her expectations are high and will gladly tell you her thoughts in the most brutal way imaginable. She verbally laughs at student answers she feels is "wrong". Although, she is nice I wouldn't recommend her for any art classes.
Three tests, drops worst one (awesome). Doesnt speak the best English which makes it very difficult for me to learn in class. Isnt the best online teacher. Test study guides are pointless, pretty much tells you to just read ALL the notes. The notes are INSANELY long, so much material. Doesnt really specify what will be on tests, as said above.
Hwang is very passionate about Art History, which makes the constant lectures not so intolerable. Every class is a lecture, sometimes with group discussions. 3 exams all semester, and the lower gets dropped, and a research paper. Her accent can be hard at first, but not if you're paying attention. Only used book to make flashcards.
Buyer beware: This professor is extremely difficult. She has absolutely no mercy when it comes to grading, and unfairly grades papers based on strange criteria. I have a feeling a lot of this is based on the transition to online learning. I typically am an A/B student and recieved excellent grades in all my other classes except Hwang.
cons: will take a week to respond to emails. pros: only three tests, and lowest score is not counted
Coming from a 4.0 student (until this class): STAY AWAY. Seriously, if you need this class then take it somewhere else. She is not one of those teachers that wants her students to succeed. Grading criteria is so unclear and she has zero tolerance for missing even a small sub question of any prompt. Also micromanages as if this were high school.
Worst teacher I've ever had. Terrible grader, the average on all assignments is very low. Very little in the class to actually help grade so if you mess up your screwed. Never ever take a class from her, she is terrible, don't know how she has a job.
Dont take this class you will want to drop it after a month:)
Hwang is an awful professor and person. She does not mention the required use of Proctorio on the syllabus, so my only choices were to download the spyware, drop the class with a W, or fail the class. Proctorio violates my personal privacy and religious beliefs, but she did not care. Plus theres no clear grading and a severe lack of communication.
Awful. Tests are extremely difficult & study guides don't help. Tests are very very harshly graded (& proctored with spyware). 100+ pg notes to study. Essays/hw get a bad grade with a "needs more work" explanation even if you follow the rules to a T. Zero tolerance for late work even during COVID-times, no reschedules either. NEVER grades on time.
Very tough grader with no clear grading criteria. She doesn't care about you, truly treats students with zero tolerance. You have to read all notes and memorize all details of every artwork, architecture. Her quizzes also required Proctorio. Taking forever to grade assignments. No late assignment accepted. Worst teacher I've ever had in Losrios.
She grades 6-8 wks after an assignment is due. Does not have a clear grading criteria. Study guides do not have all of the info that is on the test and is not helpful. Every single art piece is expected to be memorized along with names of art artists and dates but she claims this is not necessary. Horrible teacher makes excuses for grading late.
Seriously the worst professor I have ever had. She is beyond unclear with what she wants and then grades super strict. She was rude and not easy to work with. She also doesnt speak very good English which made her unclear instructions even more confusing. I put more time and effort into this class than any other class & didnt pass. DO NOT TAKE.
Professor Hwang is very tough online, take her in-person if you can. She has stacks of notes for you to copy every single week with no breaks, and participation is mandatory each week. Shell spring a random pop quiz to make sure youre actually taking the notes. Her tests and quizzes are heavily proctored so beware. She is very high in her field.
I took this class online, so I am not sure if this rating applies to in person learning. Course consists of lots of memorization and difficult tests and projects. Extremely tough on grading, with minimal opportunity to make up points. Overall terrible experience and would never take this professor again.
I feel like she barely grades things and it makes the process of bringing up your grade incredibly difficult. She also used proctorio for exams (if you are online) which basically requires that you have no tabs open, use Chrome, screenshare, have your camera on, and access to your microphone. Also there are a LOT of papers.
Worst professor I've ever had. Extremely strict grading policies and had unreasonable assignments to study. She wanted in one week 25 hours of studying on Canvas that she tracked to see if you could do it. Didn't seem to put a lot of effort into making her class fun; it was all lecture notes and some documentaries. Recommend to not take this prof.
She does not communicate and has very unrealistic expectations. Expects you to memorize all of the material (and there is a LOT) for tests and won't let you use notes as she used Protorio to watch you while you take the test and will message you and not give you credit if you even look down at your keyboard. 0/10 would not recommend!
She is not clear with all of her expectation, she expects a lot, and you will have to memorize a lot for tests and quizzes. Even when I thought I was ahead of myself with assignments, there was always another one to given. If you are taking this course, maybe look into selecting another professor from one of the Los Rios colleges.
Worst professor EVER! For the final exam, it was based off of 600+ lecture notes that she expected you to memorize without anything to help during the exam(it was a 3-part exam that was also Proctored). I had taken 8 classes during this semester; in all but this class I received an A. Trust me, you will save your sanity if you don't take this class
Would put up power points for a topic with no lecture or even a further explanation of what we were learning. Was extremely rigid with assignments, would not give any extensions or leniency no matter the reason. Uses testing site where even an accidental click on a button would lock you out of the exam and she would not allow you to continue it.
I am sure Professor Hwang is a lovely person, but in my 13 years of education, she still manages to be the worst learning experience I've ever had. Lectures were excessively long, her grading on papers is unfairly harsh, and the tests take days and days of studying to pass. I sacrificed my body and soul to get an A, please don't take her. Please.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR IN THE SUMMER!!!!She gives essay tests where she's expecting us to have memorized everything. It is unrealistic to expect students in a summer class to have essay questions on a closed book proctored test. The textbook is actually interesting. The professor seriously thinks this is the only class her students are taking.
Do not take this professor, she expects you to memorize and take notes on everything but not use them on any tests when there are over 300+ terms in just the first weeks, also all proctored. Save your sanity. Way too tough of a grader, takes points off for anything. Please do not take, it is not worth it.
Professor Hwang requires the use of Proctorio for every quiz and test; even the ones that are only worth 10 points. If you haven't heard of it, it's glorified spyware and its extremely invasive of your privacy. I dropped her class after a month; it's not worth your time or sanity. If you can, take the class with a different prof.
This professor assigns WAY too much work and grades extremely hard. I have a worse grade in this class, which I took for GE, then I do in a 5 unit required science course. The amount of reading and note taking you have to do just to get a DECENT grade in this class is insane. Exams and quizzes are hard too. Horrible experience in a GE class so far
I'm taking this class as a senior in high school... I should have checked rate my professor... Do NOT take this class, I wanted to take it for fun and now my ability to get into a UC is damaged because I have a D+. Going to try to drop out ASAP.
Class very poorly put together and disorganized.
Wow, for an ART class. This was one HECK of a class. So much work required and gotta love being recorded when taking a quiz. No notes, you HAVE to study and I mean a lot.
Why is an ART this hard? Professor is nice but style of learning is INTENSE. Will not be taking anymore classes. You will be on video on every quiz/test. Made me nervous for some reason and I didn't like being on camera/watched during my exams. It was so weird. Like they didn't trust us to be responsible college students. Why track us like this?
One of the most difficult classes I've taken there is so much material it is ridiculous to cram it in a short time grading is terrible this should be an advanced art class even then problematic Professor says one thing and the own textbook assigned to class contradicts what is being said very repressed expecting mainly 1 correct way of answering
She was a really nice teacher but made the class extremely hard. The exams are pure memorization and you need to go to her online review sections for extra credit and to learn about what's going on in the test. The homework can be pretty long and boring. Put extra stress along with my other high school classes.
Required students to use Proctorio for test taking surveillance- Proctorio fails to connect often which shuts down the test/quiz. When this happens the professor will not allow you to finish the test. This professor should find another form of income rather than online courses.
I learned a lot, but her style is too intense for a general ed course. The exams are in 3 parts (definitions, picture matching, short (very short) essays couple paragraphs for each). Lectures are notes in powerpoint form (not video) every week and you really have to take notes. Dropped the lowest exam not cumulative so didn't have to take final.
Do not reccomend, she expects you to memorize a lot of infoformation and take notes for an extreme amount of time and gives confusing instructions and does not answer questions throughly if at all. Acts like this is your only class, took it for fun and it was not fun.
BEWARE PROCTORIO!!!!!!! MAKES EXAMS SO STRESSFUL. takes forever to grade things (13 weeks in and isnt caught up on the first 7wks of grading) gives long slideshow lectures, quizzes and exams require too much memorization.
Trust the reviews, please. She is the worst professor I have ever had took this class online and it was hell. She requires certain zoom classes and said if you can't make it then it's not my problem. Her quizzes and exams and test all use a application where it records your screen and requires camera to be on.
She was the worst teacher I have ever had for a class. Her teaching style doesn't seem to work for most students, and do listen to the over reviews as well. She requires so much time put into studying and memorizing each week just for a passing grade does not warrant how difficult she is as a teacher and as a grader. I genuinely don't recommend her
woof. I don't recommend. this was one of the hardest classes I've taken and its the very end of the semester and I'm still not entirely sure what my grade is because the grades have not been in for weeks..
Trust the reviews, please. She is the worst professor I have ever had took this class online and it was hell. Her quizzes exams and tests all use an application where that records your screen and requires the camera to be on. You will be on video on every quiz/test! SO BAD TEACHER
Trust the reviews, please. She is the worst professor I have ever had took this class online and it was hell. Her quizzes exams and tests all use an application that records your screen and requires the camera to be on. You will be on video on every quiz/test
awful. dont take it. never submited grades, you have to record yourself taking the test. 30 question test you have to take in 10 mins. rude in emails. never would of taken this class if i knew how awful she was. like who gets a C in art( and I'm a 4.0 student). the lectures are like pages nad pages long and she expects you to memorize everything.
rude in emails, lots of questions on a test for a short amount of time given, long lectures (pages on pages long), every test is record with camera, audio, screen share, and you have to show your ID????? hate.
gives 25 mins for 15+ short answer questions. gives >30 mins for matching 8 pictures to corresponding descrip. of authors per question box (15+ question boxes). extreme memorization of art, artist, patron, loca., time, techniques, etc. also english is not first language so theres typos on lectures, on zooms/vids its very hard to understand.
She NEVER TEACH. We got 1-3 slideshows each with more than 30 slides every week, took notes on ourselves, repeated for a few weeks and then took the test. The test was too hard (A LOT to memorize) and almost impossible to finish with the time she gave. Also, she told us to buy the textbook but it was totally unnecessary
Proctored exams, lecture slides were very heavy, and not much was said on how to prepare for her exams.
She is unclear on instructions and very hard on projects and exams. The study guide is about 2 pages long for each exam, one of the AVERAGE scores on one of the exams was a 10/31! Pm impossible to enjoy this class let alone pass it with a good grade. I have done every assignment so far and I'm barely passing. Sucks because she's a sweet person.
The instructions of some of the assignments were unclear and lecture notes are too long and had to be memorised for exams. Overall one of the most difficult teachers I ever had.
Definitely a tough class, but using unstuckstudy alongside the textbook and study sessions helped me manage. Unclear instructions, but engaging with the material made it doable. Not the most enjoyable, but I got through it with a solid grade.
Assigns work like this is the only class that matters. Requires at least 3 hours of participation/studying per week, which she monitors. Proctored quizzes and exams. Very long slide shows, lots of memorization, tough grader. Doesn't allow any late work. Wouldn't recommend.
Instructions on assignments were unclear, and when asked she would just restate word for word what the instructions were, along with being a harsh grader. Expected students to spend at minimum 3 hours on taking notes, and she would proctor the lecture slides, she would email you if you did not meet her time minimum.
Class is hard for no reason, she makes everything so much harder than it needs to be and I have been a 4.0 student and I find myself heavily regretting taking her class. She also takes such a long time to grade things so I could not even drop it before the deadline. Seems like she thinks her class is the only one students take, would not recommend.
Test is incredibly material heavy lots of dates and specifics u have to memorize and u get recorded while taking tests. It's so much that it forces u to put more focus on this class than other classes.
She does not proofread any slides so many of them have information that does not make sense. This carried over to the final exams as well. Lectures are heavily proctored and she removes points for asinine reasons. Takes a very long time to grade your research paper and is overall not communicative.
I really should've done my research before I decided to choose this class. She is an intense grader and makes a subject that should be fun really difficult and uninteresting. Next time when I choose an online class, I would check what other people said before I take the class. This was my first online collage class, and it has not been nice.
A year after ARTH300, I must warn everyone to avoid this professor at all costs. The weekly workload is overwhelming, with too much material to cover and little time to study for the quizzes. The quizzes are proctored, timed, and require answering over 20 questions in just 15 minutes. The course feels more challenging than it should be. DO NOT TAKE
Literally any other professor would be better than her. I was excited to take this course but the immense amount of confusing lectures, supplemental readings and documentaries ruined it. Extremely hard grader and takes forever to grade. On our second exam we had to memorize over 60 works of art and EVERYTHING is proctored with honorlock.
Literally save yourself do not take this course with her. We took an exam over a MONTH ago and still isnt done grading the exams. She also assigns weekly discussions but we are on our 12th week and she hasn't graded items from our 5th week yet. She comments on your exams saying you look distracted but once you respond to her she never replies back.
Never responds to important emails or classroom comments, and she is insufferable as a teacher. Nit picky but doesn't have good instructions. If you can I would advise you to drop and take a different professor.
⚠️⚠️ DO NOT TAKE unless you want to memorize 100+ works of art, the materials used, when they were published, the significant meanings of a floor plan (??), etc… test are heavily proctored and if you glance away from the screen she will question you (a month later) and then ghost you… girl bye
DONT THINK OF TAKING THIS CLASS, HATE IT! She's extremely rude in the emails, TEST HEAVY, and a very harsh grader. When i mean there's a lot of memorization, there's A LOT, you'd have to memorize like at LEAST 60 to a 110 terms, if you look at the study guide you'll see that you have not just to memorize terms but also paintings AND DOCUMENTARIES.
Very hard to learn and study material. The lessons are in forms of slideshows that contain hundreds of artworks per week making it extremely difficult to retain any information. She marks down points for things that were never mentioned in original instructions.
Listen, if you are okay with trying to memorize over 100 slides of content for an exam that has set timers and is in three parts, by all means go ahead. Unorganized, dreadful slides, and probably the most unclear directions. Need help? refer to her last email as this is the only guidance she gives. Save yourself the time and stress, and do not take
I took this class because I thought it would be a fun elective. This class was extremely hard for a beginners class. The professor comes up with random rules to dock off points. The material is hard to study because of the way it is organized and written. Just horrible experience. Everyone dropped out.
Interesting class. Prepare to learn a lot. Lots of EC opportunities. Tough grader. Sweet lady.
I passed the class it was so hard for literally no reason I was taking 3 other classes on top of this one and I cried when studying for her exams, she makes students memeorize over 50+ photos for just one exam and there are 3 or 4 on top of a final. SAVE YOURSELF. She also records your exams and watches them and comments if you side-eye a little.
School of any level should be a safe space,I had to drop out of her class because she was so insufferable and insensitive I had a medical emergency & when I went to take the test at 10 pm she scolded me for doing things last minute and that I wasn't going to be successful if I kept doing so, little did she know what really happened.
I am so happy other students are voicing how difficult this class is. you have to memorise every single thing. 100+ images. you can not use notes for anything and you will be recorded while taking tests and exams. do not take this class. the only chance you have at passing this class is if you are blessed with a photographic memory.
Just awful. One of the worst teachers I have ever had. No empathy at all if you have any problems don't expect her to help you. I think I have to go to the dean.
Although Professor Hwang is very responsive by email, the amount of information you will have to memorize for tests is INSANE. Over 100 images and you will have to name the artist, title of the piece, the art movement it belongs to, the year/century of the piece, plus other questions. No matter how much you prepare, you will not be ready.
The professor is nice, just the content and workload is insane.
Prof. Hwang is a sweet lady, she just assigns a LOT of work and is a pretty tough grader. She gives a lot of extra credit though.
This class singlehandedly tanked my GPA. Insane workload, lack of any type of practice assignments and just a genuine lack of care from the instructor. Course is organized awfully and almost seems like it's designed to make you stress as hard as possible. And no, I'm not being dramatic.
I'm on week 5 and I already regret enrolling in this class. I should've looked at the other reviews before I enrolled.
You'd think this was a class on practicing medicine where people's lives were on the line and not an JC art history class. The weekly content doesn't take long to review, but the graded assignment are insane. The wording on some can be a bit misleading and if the assignment is completed incorrectly, even if only partially, you will receive a 0.
I did not like her. I thought at first it was me struggling in the class, and I asked for A LOT of assistance from the teacher, and I was still failing (this is unusual for me). The large assignments are more about fulfilling requirements than learning. I thought the class was really interesting, but I couldn't handle the teacher.
The professor lacked adequate communication skills for an online course, including but not limited to bad slides, inability to clarify or answer questions directly, or show any sort of understanding for students with disabilities, family problems, etc. Truly a professor I would avoid at all costs.
This professor refused to meet me halfway at every step. If you make a mistake on an assignment, she will give you a zero. Not even partial credit. It's impossible to know what she actually wants. I'm an art major. I'm familiar with the pieces she shows in this class. But I spent countless hours studying and barely managed to get a 70.5% by week 9.
Terrible professor all around. I took this class during my first semester at FLC hoping to have an interesting class that I could engage easily with. Instead I was met with an unbelievable amount of material to memorize and some of the most difficult tests I have ever taken (even when I have multiple AP exams under my belt). Horrible class
Actually abysmal. Lectures were so heavily loaded and quizzes were 100% regurgitating information so it was impossible to ever get a good score on one. Grades harsh on discussions. I think I might've gotten 100% on a total of three assignments the whole semester. Avoid at all costs, you wont learn a thing and will probably fail.
For being an ONLINE class the teacher was not very accessible. She would take days to respond to my emails. She had absolutely no sympathy and disregarded any technology problems I had that would cause me me to miss an assignment. The exams for this class were absolutely insane and she is a very harsh grader. Try to avoid this teacher if you can.
