Her class is so difficult to follow. Lectures are unclear. Not helpfull. No homework or in class assinments to help make concepts clear. My advice...don't take this class
Admittedly, I've had a lot of French before, so this class seemed easy. But I can see how Eva's teaching style might be confusing or unclear at times, considering English is (at least) her third language. If you're new to French, take it from someone else.
She is very willing to try and help you, the class lessons are not structured in a way that is benefical to learning though.
If you have a good attitude it is not difficult to get on her good side and she is always willing to help. I had a lot of trouble with german in high school and then I got Eva and she makes it so easy. There is a lot of studying for this class though but that is expected with a language.
Very experienced teacher with a lot of knowledge regarding languages. Can come off as abrassive, but is genuinely nice. Classes mostly focus on key concepts. You MUST study a lot outside of class in order to learn a foreign language. There IS homework in the form of the workbook and lab manual.
The material in this class was all review for me, and it was a very good review class for me. However, I know that Eva could be unclear at times. She is eager to help though, and will seek out the answers to any questions there might be. Her class is relatively easy, but no extra-credit.
She was terrible. She didn't actual teach, she just read from the book. If you asked a question her answers often made you more confused. She graded tests and the workbook/homework VERY unfairly. The tests didn't reflect what we learned in class. DO NOT take a class from her.
I love her! She is extremely intelligent and funny. She really knows her stuff; and if you are a serious student, you will love her too! Her class requires hard work, but shouldn't all college courses?
Is a very hard teacher. Even for me, eventough i speak german it was hard and the tests were hard. Try to avoid her if you can.
I was very unhappy with this class. @ first things seemed pretty cool and she was great but when someone gets really ill and let's you know a head of time what happens, she gives you no slack. I had pneumonia when I took her class and she refused to help me out. It really sucked.
she was terrible! she plays favoritism. i love french and I was planning on going on, but i didn't learn much from her. she didn't TEACH she read from the book- i can do that on my own time. she was not organized and hadn't even taught 102 so she had no idea what she was doing.
Wonderful lady, good teacher, makes class duscussion fun, but poor test & homework selection, & grading policies. Tests & hmwk replaced much required vocab with unfamiliar words - made it hard to adequately answer questions. She penalizes for things that aren't required, such as trying something beyond your level just for fun but getting it wrong.
Great professor! She is serious about her stuff and knows what she is talking about. She is always willing to help students. She makes the class extremely interesting and challenging. Learning a language is never easy, but she makes it fun.
Frau Norling can be very tough, particularly in 101, but if you put forth the effort, she is also very helpful and passionate. She's German, after all! I learned more in the first few weeks of 101 than in two years of high school German with her. She gets a little more lax in 102/103 -- don't bother taking if you don't intend to really work.
Nice teacher overall, not a hard grader, but expects your total attention at all times. The first day of class she told us to open the book to a page and i didn't hear her, so i asked the person next to me which page(meanwhile of course she asked ME to read it). I asked her to repeat what page it was and she totally yelled at me. Other than that she's actually pretty nice.
She is a typical german teacher. Just reading the book, doing whatever she is supposed to finish in the book, doesnt really care about u... I know 3 languages but I couldnt learn anything from her about GERMAN... She hates lots of things in US, I think she should go back to germany...
She sucks! Don't take her ever! I hate French now!
This teacher doesn't know the first thing about teaching. She brings her kids to class, she doesn't answer questions, and you basically teach yourself. I would not recommend her to my worst enemy.
She is good at teaching you German. She knows alot. Sometimes she kinda goes alittle fast or starts useing things you haven't learned but you just have to slow her down and ask for help. She is not very demanding of you. Just wants to help you learn the material. (She's really not a mean evil German ;p )
After the German teacher I had in Highschool she is like a dream come true... I mean, she ACTUALLY speaks german!!!! Not a hard grader, so it's easy to settle with a B or B+ when if you just but a bit of effort in you could get an A. She gets tired of people when they don't try, so if you want to learn German, this is a good place to start!
Professeur Norling was great. I decided to take 101 to fill space in my schedule & hadn't taken any French before, but after her class I've decided to continue thru at least 1st year. She always comes in happy & wants students to enjoy the language. She's very helpful & encouraging as long as you pay attention and try. Not too hard to get an A.
I'm not sure what some of the students are thinking, but I like her a lot. She goes out of her way in helping students in and outside of class, she will send you assignments when you can't get them, and she expects you to study, but then isn't that what school is supposed to be all about? I learned more than I did in High School. Great teacher.
Pretty much awesome! Very nice & always in a good mood. We didn't have to turn in cheesy workbook activities - studying is left up to student (be responsible). Explains things well, always willing to answer questions. Not hard to do well if you pay attention & put in effort, which is what she likes to see. I wish she was teaching 103 this year.
Very Bad Teacher, Doesn't Explain ANYTHING!! DON'T TAKE HER CLASS!!!!!!!!
She's a pretty nice and helpful teacher but she goes very fast and is really hard to understand, you really have to keep up with homework and attend class everyday to keep up in her class. her tests and quizzes are fair but you just have to keep up with her pace to succeed.
She's a great teacher! Yes, you do have to attend class regularly, and you can't get behind on homework or you'll quickly be lost, but I can't believe how much German I learned in only one quarter, and she's really nice and helpful too!
She's an fantastic teacher. In 102 she rarely required homework. She assigns homework, but she doesn't collect it and grade it. Her attitude is that you need to do your homework or else you will fail the tests. I like her style because she doesn't make you jump through hopes like most American teachers do. This allows the student to focus their stu
she is a horrible teacher! she is so mean and picks favorites. one of the worst teacher i have ever had in my life!
great class, great teacher. Really wants you to do well, and if you stick with the class is willing to move test days to give you an extra day if you need one (and show your working hard, not just because your lazy). well worth it to stick with it all 3 quarters (most people drop by the 2-3 quarters). TAKE GERMAN!
This class keeps you on your toes during lectures. You will never fall asleep in this class. She sometimes calls on certain people in the class a lot. The tests are easy if you study. Attendence is a must.
Frau Norling is a wonderfully passionate instructor at BCC who truly wants her students to learn and excel in the German language. Makes herself available for discussion and feedback at all times since she is willing to explore alternative avenues to assisting in both classroom and independent learning of German. Diligent effort = Good results
She is a mean teacher and she never be considerated to her students. She gives some hard time to me by refusing to help me when I had some difficulties on German. She just reads over the book which you can do it by our own at home. Feel like wasting time in her class!!!
She's a little hard to get used to, her teaching style is definitely different, but once you get to know her, she's actually a really fun teacher! She very much loves what she does and it shows and it helps :)

She's a complete waste of time i kept giving this class a chance and she just kept getting worse. She obviuosly isn't used to america's ways cause she comes around clas and slams shut your book for no reason she offers no help and won't give you your tests if you are 5 min late.
This class was, hands down, my favorite of the quarter. Frau Norling is an excellent teacher and always made classes interesting and very fun! It's difficult (I think languages always are, especially in 101) but SO worth the effort. I've learned loads!
I learned more in her class than I did from 1 1/2 years of high school German. It's really important to come to class every day and study a lot after school, but this class wasn't hard. She focuses a lot on German culture and grammar in class and not so much on vocabulary.

I had 2yrs FR in high school (A's), attended class, got 100% on HW, did the EC (2 ppl in class only did it), and took all tests. She is HARD and didn't get it was 101. Sorry, she is too strict and too picky! I know i did better than a B...

Insanely hard class. I felt like i was taking a second year language class, not a 101. Focuses more on German history and culture than learning the actual language. And always complains about american culture.
Frau Norling made learning German pretty fun. It was a hard class, but I learned a lot. She made herself available outside of class to answer questions or concerns. Some people have left comments saying she is anti-American, but they have misconstrued her remarks that simply point out interesting cultural differences. She is really quite cool.
I can't understand the some of the negative comments people have been giving this teacher except that was YOUR fault for being lazy or arrogant that made the class and teacher "hard". Frau Norling is an amazing teacher and does a great job of teaching a difficult language! I highly recommend her classes for those interested in a foreign language.
AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS!!! IT TAKES MORE EFFORT THAN A HIGH LEVEL MATH CLASS!!! YOU WILL FAIL, BWAHAHAHAHAHA (I hated this class)
She is a fun and helpful teacher. She is from Germany which really helps. she integrates the class into speaking so you learn more and easier.
Awesome instructor with a "no BS" approach. If you do poorly it's your fault. Would still be taking German from her if I could find time in my schedule.
I just want to point out that alot of Madame norling's negative feedback came from way back in 2007. personally I found her a wonderful and engaging teacher. it's a hard class and you have to study and ask questions, but she will help you. Her tests are pretty hard, but I've learned more in 6 weeks than the 3 years i had previously
Very good teacher. People don't realize that yea, its a foreign language, and of course its going to be hard. Probably harder than most other subjects. And you gotta spend a lot of time studying vocab outside of class obviously. What else did you expect? At least she makes it fun and interesting.
Frau Norling is a very nice women, she just expects WAY too much out of you. She gives you hardly anytime between the test and the next chapters first vocab quiz (this time it is just three days!). She doesn't realize that some of her students have jobs and other classes as well as hers. I would not recommend her if that is the case.
Frau Norling is a nice lady but has unrealistic expectations and a very aimless teaching technique. She hands out a plethora of worksheets and never grades them nor are there any answer keys given so we don't know if we're doing them right or wrong. Totally counter-productive. I'm happy I took her classes but be careful and get a tutor asap!
Norling was almost great at explaining French, the amount of homework she assigned was decent and she's overall a good French teacher. However, I noticed that she sometimes she tends to pick on students; which knocks her down several points.
Tough teacher, not very understanding. Often disses American Culture. Almost as if she intentionally embarrasses some of the students in front of the entire class. Definitely picks out favorites. Aside from her personality, she does expect a lot of effort and time with assignments. Just make sure to do the work and get the help you need.
Germ 121: Textbook use daily. Homework about 30-40 pages for each of the 4 chapters including loose-leaf worksheets before quizzes/for practice. Vocab test once a week. She's a good teacher (Good at explaining), and if you pay attention and participate you will do fine. If you just do the homework and come to class you'll at least get a C / B-.
If you haven't taken German before, this class will not be easy. There is a lot of weekly vocab, and daily homework. However, if you've taken German elsewhere, this class will increase you knowledge. Great teacher, really good at explaining, and with an entertaining teaching style. I'd recommend her to someone who has some experience with German.
Great teacher, she keeps the class fun and interesting. She cracks some good jokes every now and then. She can be quite serious, and expects you to be very diligent in attendance and performance. All in all she is one of my favorite professors.
This is my second time taking her and if you didn't have that great of an experience with her in FRCH 121 for whatever reason, she appreciate seeing the same students taking her class again. Once again she is very funny and it is never a bummer to be in class
Frau Norling is the BEST teacher you could possibly imagine. She is hilarious & will help you in every way possible. Just get A's on the vocab quizzes and average on the exams (she does extra credit too) & a 4.0 is easy. She is better than any at the UW & teaches you about the german culture & social mannerisms that'll save your life in Germany!
Very hard course. Don't miss any class days. I studied for hours on end and barely passed the class, never really saw a quiz or test get above the low 70% range AT BEST no matter how much time i put into studying. Very difficult course, expect to put in at LEAST an hour a day for studying. Weekly vocab quizzes killed me every time.
122 is easier than 121 but still very difficult. Instructor is helpful. Attend class and study vocab for next section immidiately after quizes (2/chapter). Quiz 2 or 3 days after chapter test and then whenever she gets to the second section for the second. DON'T MISS ANY DAYS OF CLASS or you will fall behind.
Probably the worst class I’ve ever had at BCC. Mrs. Norling is not very organized and her assignments are quite confusing. She picks favorites students and intentionally mocks the rest of the class. Always do your homework and any additional assignments if you want a good grade. Do not take this class unless you are fluent in German.
The class is OK but required a lot of hard work and the expectations are very high. Be ready to spend at least one hour a day. Tutoring is advised.
This was the worst teacher I ever had in my whole life, she says to study 1 hour a day, but in order to pass you might as well drop all your other classes and only take this to pass, its more like studying 5 hours a day with all the homework and practice you will fail if you're not already fluent in French, she has no mercy if you are a beginner .
Terrible terrible class. . Fraulein Norling seems to work hard during the class but her methods and directions are very inconsistent and confusing. I think she may be good in German but she just doesn't know how to teach students. I would not recommend her classes to anyone who wants to learn German.
Amazing teacher. Always helpful, even when asked about previously learned material. She provides interesting cultural information. Order the textbook beforehand because you use it from the first day. The class moves quickly but is easy if you put in the time. Fair tests and quizzes.
Good professor! I learned a lot of German in a very short time. Coming to class every day is a definite must. Fair grader.
Frau Norling is wonderful. She's very informative and happy to help. She is very clear in class and is available to help students if they ask for help. She gives A LOT of homework. Tests are exactly what was covered in class, quizzes are just over vocab. I would highly recommend her if you're serious about learning a foreign language.
Norling is super funny and sweet, but she's awful at teaching French. Unless you've had previous courses on French and just need to retouch, it's tough to catch on and she doesn't really help you all that much, even when you visit her offices.
Mme. Norling is a great teacher. She can be a bit hard to follow at times but loves discussion and her tests are based entirely on the homework. THERE IS A LOT OF HOMEWORK. but if you don't procrastinate it's manageable. There are also quite a few tests and quizzes and not always a lot of time to study. Would take again though.
Mme. Norling is a good teacher. Her tests are based entirely off of the homework however there is a lot of homework. Expect about 6-8 hours a week in addition to studying. She loves discussions. Would recommend her to anyone interested in French.
Frau Norling is funny and knows her subject, but the positive end there. She spent most of the period trying to figure out how her technology worked, then made us read all the grammar by ourselves so she, "didn't have to teach it." Not flexible with work schedule, didn't give much feedback. Almost everything online, attendance mandatory, it was bad
She really cares about her students passing and doing well overall. Perky and happy which makes the class more energetic.
She does all homework online and it requires a lot of time and effort. She is a really hard grader and marks you down for just about anything. She has a really funny personality though and is nice. She will call on anyone in class so be prepared.
This class is HARD. I'm ok with that, but Norling makes very little effort to go the extra mile and help her students out when they are struggling. Additionally, there is no leniency here. Only one extra credit, and she will not curve a grade even .2 points for a higher letter grade.
Eva is a really nice professor, but for the love of god DO THE SPEAKING EXERCISES! They are worth more than you think and take time but she grades them fairly easily. Quizzes are always easy vocab and tests focus more on grammar and conjugation. She does offer 3% grade increase for a movie review at the end of the quarter.
Ms. Norling, she was a great teacher, loved speaking French/German with her, the first French class I did in my freshman year in college was great, but later in junior year, it was a challenge because I had so much, passed the first time I took her class, but failed the next. The more she writes, the more I have to learn. Loved her in my class
her class is definitely not easy. There is so much online homework and she calls out people in class all the time which is extremely irritating. Do not let her know you can't read french that well, chances are she'll call on you the most.
She is an incredible teacher. She helps you when you ask for it, she is very fluent in English, which makes it easier to learn. She also feels very approachable. If you finish all your homework and do average on tests, you will get through just fine. The overall class is very difficult, and she even acknowledges that; it says so in the Syllabus.
She is very knowledgeable on her subject and knows how to teach a class. You see this as soon as you ask her a question. Unfortunately she doesn't use this expertise for that. Read the book, do the online homework (from the book) and you'll pass. You could practically just buy the book read it and take the final Exam. Very little outside content.
Overall, I love her. She is an amazing teacher who tries her hardest to teach you. Norling, I can't say anything bad about. The class... that's a different story. This class is difficult. She even says in her syllabus that this class is going to be hard. She tries to make it as easy as possible, but German is a very hard language to learn.
After taking all the German courses with her, I can say she is a very good instructor. The fact that she is German is an advantage because she teaches very specific but useful tips in the culture that you will learn from nowhere else. Expect a lot of homework and she is also a tough grader. Do HW on-time as it is a huge part of the final grade.
I personally really liked Frau Norling. Her teaching style and expectations were clear. Assigns a lot of homework but is necessary to learn the concepts and is normal for any language class. She tells you exactly what is going to be on the test so studying is really easy. Vocab quizzes are straight forward. Do your work and you will get an A.
She's an awesome teacher, clear, interesting, and willing to explain things further outside of class. She's flexible. The work is difficult, but not too hard. You have to be careful about assignments, because you will find them in several places, but her system is easy to get the hang of and she's gracious about it.
1. Her tests are very difficult. Average grade for my last test was 44/87. And no she does not Curve or give EC. 2. She reads out of the book and does nothing more, she speaks French for 5 minutes of class. 3. She treats the language like its a programming language. 'If X equals Y then you must use T rather than Z.' 4. She is enthusiastic though.
Frau Norling's class was the hardest class I've ever taken. She was very unclear about directions. She graded super harshly, and she is super strict. There was one day she yelled at the entire class for something ridiculous, then contradicted herself while still yelling. She graded the same answers differently for different people for no reason.
Shes helpful and was willing to work with the weakness part that I struggle with...
Eva's personality started shining through at towards the end of the semester, and she is not a bad person; just a tough grader who isn't lenient. Specifically when it comes to missing class. Even if you miss class and email her about it; she will take points off. And the daily homework gets difficult if the class is behind schedule fyi.
While she was only my teacher for half of a quarter (missed the second half due to a broken leg), Mme Norling was a great teacher. She was serious at times, but overall she was very kind. She also was easily accessible outside of class, and she would respond to emails very quickly.
This class is very challenging if you don't feel comfortable with French and able to learn relatively fast you will not be able to do well in this class. There are weekly homework packets that consume a huge amount of time not including classwork added on top of that. Lastly there of quiz very often which you will have 2 days to learn the material.
Eva Norling is a very kind, educated, and dedicated professor. However, her courses are messy, which certainly isn't helpful when trying to learn a foreign language. She was accessible outside of class which was very helpful, but there were so many tests and assignments that it was impossible to keep up, especially if you're new to French.
worst teacher ever! gives you so much work. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!
If you are not good at learning languages, do not take this class. Additionally, myself and a few other students noticed she does not follow her syllabus. She assigns about 15 assignments a day and a few quizzes and 1-2 tests a week. The textbook website is incredibly unorganized and feels very detached from the professor. Not worth my time.
Willing to work with students who are struggling as long as they reach out. The online work is a little much though. At some points we had 4 hours of work assigned for one day. Her class is easy as long as you study and do the assignments.
The professor was fine, because the class was online we used a French learning program, that's what sucked. The professor respected everyone but the program was computer graded and was really tough. There was a lot of homework that made it really hard to stay caught up especially when the computer was not 100% accurate with grading.
Worst teacher ever. Expects you to learn French almost all by yourself. An insane amount of work and so many quizzes & tests. The online assignments do not help you learn at all. Its just a hell of a lot of busy but meaningless work to do.
She thinks that you own her 3 hours a day. She sends you so many exercises that you won't have time to study by yourself. What an awful professor.
This only regards her asynchronous online class; I never spoke to her directly, she didn't make any effort for students to work together, the entire class was done through a self-taught program (except for her grading tests), her gradings/corrections policy was unclear, and I generally didn't enjoy the class. I'm french myself, and still did poorly
French IV is a hard class, but taking it asynchronously made it even harder. There were no lectures provided by Madame Norling, only assignments through the online textbook. Work load was BIG, at least 10-15 assignments and 1 quiz each day. Did not learn much. She is an understanding person but the online format made the class stressful.
Uses an online learning platform that does not encourage learning, is super strict on grading and only gives you two tries for every question (which makes it worse when there are so many confusing questions that you get your first try wrong 100% of the time), the workload is insane! Would never take French with Madame again.
Professor Norling is extremely strict! She will mark you wrong on the slightest mistakes and won't give you back points. The entire course was done on an online site so she teaches you nothing, you're basically learning on your own. Also there is SO MUCH homework. Up to 18 assignments per day plus very frequent quizzes and tests is normal for her.
bruh. i'm literally four weeks into this course and it's the worst i've ever taken. i always enjoyed french until this teacher, but this course and the 1/3 of it i've taken has smashed it. at LEAST an hour and a half worth of homework each day. two quizzes a week and one test a week. norling is a harsh grader with no remorse or empathy. boo.
Eva Norling is a great teacher. She is constructive and informative, and she is more then willing to help you on any problems you are having. She also is extraordinary interactive in class and fun to talk with. However, the class is exceptionally difficult due to the heavy homework load and numerous difficult quizzes and tests.
+ Easy to talk to, I found going to her office hours to be very helpful, accommodating - No late work or retakes AT ALL, daily coursework + ~9 tests and ~30 quizzes, not a lot of forgiveness on assignments which brings grades down easily I actually do like her, her class just stressed me out so bad that I don't think I'd take again.
The VHL website used for homework is super annoying and her grading is very very specific when it comes to homework. She gives good feedback but there can be anywhere from 5-15 10 min homeworks per day plus a test or quiz sometimes.
VHL sucks and although you can request help online she doesn't always get to it (because there's up to 25 assignments/day). Not a lot of listening assignments so you don't get a lot of practice with that. Her lectures just go over the stuff you learn in the textbook so it's just review, attendance is graded but not heavily.
She doesn't teach her online class and just uses her online textbook to teach everything. Absolutely the worst way to teach a class and then grades you based off the homework and these tests. Just made everything more difficult and frustrating. Be prepared to do at least 5 hours of homework a week. Then you have tests as well. Not fun.
Frau Norling is a great teacher, and I enjoyed German II in person with her much more. She is very interactive and passionate, and although the vast majority of assignments take place on VHL, she gives good feedback and has regular office hours. Learning a language can be challenging, but small group practice and her personal insight were helpful!
Madame Norling's class is no walk in the park - the workload is intense, with up to 18 daily assignments plus frequent quizzes and tests. While the online platform is frustrating, Unstuck study proved a helpful study tool. Overall, a challenging but worthwhile class if you stay on top of the work.
Worst professor I have ever had. Her grading system is horribly confusing. She immediately makes you buy a 200$ online textbook that she wrote... then bases the entire class off it. Expect 15 worksheets daily on average. I will be reporting her socioeconomically unethical textbook practice to the school.
Excellent teacher, I took the entire German sequence with her almost a year ago, she taught me a language from scratch which is not easy to do. The homework load was a bit much, but it is something to be expected in a language class, since you need to practice.
