This was Evan first time teaching at sfu and I must say that we was a great prof!! He tried his best to make the material easy and simple to understand. Would love to take classes with him in the future!
I wish the lectures would never end. Very respectful and intelligent prof. Cares mostly about learning and widening the perspective of his students rather than exams and marks. Highly recommend any course that he offers.
Really engaging prof and one of the few gems at SFU who will inspire you to become a better student. Nice, approachable, and funny. The only thing missing is the tweed jacket and he could be one of those movie professors who inspire the jocks to victory.
Evan is a great prof. He has only taught for a couple semesters now but I see him quickly becoming one of the best profs in the Psychology department. He tried his hardest to make everything clear for students in lecture so there were no surprises on the midterm and final. Course is a lot of work but he makes it doable. Would easily take him again.
Excellent Professor, Evan is very clear about the material and you will know what to expect on the midterms and finals. Although the course is a lot of work, Evan made himself available after hours and explains things very clearly.
Evan is extremely knowledgable and is passionate about what he teaches and really cares for his students. Lecture attendance is not mandatory but he does hint what MC questions will be on the exam if you show up. Gives great lectures, and good exam outlines. Excellent prof. Would go out of my way to take another course he teaches.
Took this course online but Evan was super helpful with weekly check ins and exam prep. There was a lot of material covered, but he advised us on what to focus on which helped a lot. Super helpful when concepts were hard to understand and very accessible.
I took bio psych online and Evan was so helpful and detailed with what we were tested on. Gave us multiple short answer and long answer questions for exam so we could be prepared. Even though there was lots of info to learn, he helped us focus on the key components and made taking an online class much clearer. 10/10
This was the first online class that I took at SFU and I'm very thankful Evan was the instructor! He had very useful discussions each week and was also willing to meet in person to go over midterm results. We were very well prepared for our exams, which is important because there is a ton of content for this class!
Amazing professor! I took 280 with him and have since been taking every other course he teaches. I took 280 online but he still took the time to call me on the phone and provide feedback about a paper.
I took Psyc280 online, and Evan was an awesome TA. I was skeptical about taking the course online, or taking it in general considering i havent taken bio since highschool. But Evan was extremely helpful and always explained concepts clearly.
The lectures were painfully boring. He had 2 midterms, 1 cumulative final and weekly online quizzes. Quizzes are the only reason I passed as they were open book. Tests seem to not come from his notes or from the textbook, very difficult. Class av was 52% on one of the midterms.
Evan has been my favourite teacher Ive had at SFU so far! Hes super smart and always willing to talk to you outside of class. I looked forward going to lecture every week. There was a midterm, a couple assignments, and a final and I think they were challenging but fair. I would 100% take again :)
Was a nice enough guy but not meant to be a prof. Hes quiet & introverted which made lectures extremely boring, 75 % of the class just played games during it. he read straight from slides & posted them for us bc people complained that he was too fast. mark based solely off online quizzes and 3 exams. exams hard compared to quizzes so every1 dropped
midterms and final were mostly application so it's better to understand each concept rather than memorizing word per word. quizzes were all textbook based so i recommend reading the book before taking the quiz. lecture was extremely boring and he reads it directly from slides, but if u pay close attention in lecture he tries to give examples.
Dr. Caldbick is a fine professor, his lectures are HEAVILY based off the textbook with a little extra and he gives online quizzes for each chapter from the textbook. He encourages students to ask questions during lecture but it can be hard to get his attention. There are two midterms and the final is cumulative.
He is a very caring and sweet prof. His lectures are hard to understand, he posts the slides online but it would be helpful to attend. There are weekly quizzes for every chapter which is based on the book. His questions for exams and quizzes are nitpicky, so there's a lot to memorize (from the book and the lectures).
Lectures are long and boring, he basically reads off his slides. Grades were scaled most of the time and canvas quizzes+rps participation were grade boosters.
His lectures were boring and almost half the class would leave during our break. The midterms were okay but were hard and very precise. No point in reading the book because his lectures are exactly from the readings. Overall I wouldnt take a class with him as a professor.
Overall he was a really good Prof but he's a very hard marker for the midterms and finals. Final was cumulative and was going to focus on the last two chapters but focused much more on the other chapters which made it so much harder to study for. Being an intro course this was unacceptably super hard and boring. He has a monotone voice. Hated it.
Such an awesome dude. Course was very challenging, but it should be. I felt very dumb many times but this course is great if you enjoy a challenge. Very open to feedback and very accessible: he just wants you to do well and understand the material. Very passionate and very well read so great for conversation related or unrelated to course content.
Evan is probably one of my favourite profs I've had at SFU, he's young, engaging, knowledgeable, well read and very passionate about his studied fields. It's important to ask questions, engage in lecture and be prepared for lecture and quizzes by doing your readings. I liked this prof so much that I am taking another course with him next semester
At least, I hope I get a D. It's not the instructors fault, he's a great teacher and the class avg. is usually in the B range. He's a very good PHD student and I hope he get's inductor as a Doctor soon. Take his classes, he his the biology arm of the bio psycho social unit at SFU.
MY FAV PROF!!! The course itself was very difficult and I'm still unsure what my grade is (I hope a C at least) but Evan kept this class very engaging. He is very understanding and doesn't throw anything unexpectedly. He made studying less stressful for everyone by giving us questions to study which was super helpful! would definitely take again!
I LOVED this course. It was super interesting which made it easier to study for. The mt and final were about the same difficulty (he even gives bonus questions). It is easy to do well on the assignment as long as you are thorough in your research and the weekly quizzes were a piece of cake (open book). 10/10 would recommend!
Evan has by far been my favourite professor at SFU. I looked forward to his lectures every week as I found them very engaging. You can tell he is passionate about what he teaches and it makes the whole experience better. The tests can be challenging but he helps you prepare for them by giving questions in advance. All around great prof!
Really personable, and great with answering questions in person or by email/canvas. This sort of class I struggle with but I really enjoyed the material, and found that it was laid out in a way that contributed to ease of understanding how different systems are connected. If you can't attend a lecture they will be posted online, make sure to watch
Evan is a very down to earth and approachable professor who seems very passionate about what he teaches. This course was quite difficult as there was so much material to cover, but Evan helped with this by providing a list of short answer questions to prepare and study from for the midterms and final. Overall great professor and person!
One of my favourite professors I've had. I've never been good at the parts of psychology that lean more towards the hard science side but his manner of explaining concepts gave me a better understanding that I've ever had. Definitely need to read all materials and attend all lectures to succeed but he does record the lectures if you can't make it.
Extremely nice and caring man! However, I found that tough concepts were often explained quickly making it difficult to absorb the information coming at you (which is alot!!). I wish lectures focused more on the pharmacological mechanisms of drugs and less on concepts that are easier to grasp like their history and clinical uses.
One of the best psychology instructor! So caring and approachable. Even though this course is so damn difficult for psyc students, Evan's help made it easier for students to survive. The content is tough, get ready to read. HOWEVER, if you had a different option, I suggest you to never take this class in the first place :)
Evan was a pretty cool dude. He posts study guides about two weeks before midterms (of which there are three) which gives you just enough time to prepare. All in all, he's pretty chill and he's easily approachable when you ask him questions.
He is very monotoned, goes through lectures very slowly. There will be ~60 slides and he'll get through like 15 in the first hour then rush through the rest towards the end of lecture. LOTS of memorization required. He gives 16 written questions as practice before the exam and 4 of them are on the exam so you need to memorize basically everything
He was a great guy by the three hour lectures got super boring but material is interesting. Exams were hard
very dry, heavy, 3hr lectures, not engaging at all. Will not keep track of time and rush to finish remainder of slides. Graded on 3 exams and 1 outline and a paper. Even studying for exams it is quite hard. Review questions for written entail a lot of writing. Final is cumulative even though there are 2 midterms throughout the course.
Heavy long lectures but very monotone, and he doesn't have a track of time. He will go slow for the first half and rush to finish majority in the end.
Nice guy but the 3-hour lectures get boring especially since he speaks in a monotone voice. Sometimes he takes too long going over topics that aren't important. Encourages a lot of questions, which is good, but it also gets boring when people ask questions outside the course. Exams are quite tough, have to memorize some pretty trivial numbers.
Amazing & genuine person, he is the best person to take this course with, highly reccomended
so much love for this prof. he is amazing, very knowledgeable and I actually enjoy coming to his class. 100% recommend
he clearly cares about his students and his class and takes the time to make sure students understand his material and the content in the course. he makes long informative lectures, very engaging. genuinely one of the best profs I've had
Professor Caldbick is one of the best and most caring professors I have ever had. The course is extremely dense; however, he tries his best to make it accessible and simple to everyone. He clearly cares about his students, and our mental health. I'd certainly take any other course with him!!!
Evan is easily the most compassionate psyc prof I've ever had. He was dealt an unreasonably unfair hand as far as the course content went, because it was A LOT of stuff to get under our belts, yet makes it as accessible as possible to students. Take biopsyc with him if possible, because you will not get a better person for the job.
Evan is so accommodating and helpful!! He genuinely wants you to do well and if you were considering taking one of his classes I definitely recommend it. Be ready to work for your grade though, but if you put in effort you will do well. Would 100% take a class with him as a prof again.
Super kind and intelligent! Quite often, he would claim he does not know when asked questions but then would go on to give long, thoughtful answers anyway. Pretty funny and would make jokes sometimes, which certainly made the class more enjoyable. The course itself was heavy tho, so be ready to work hard.
If you were ever interested in physiology and how the body works, take a class with him. He is the most knowledgeable, caring and respectful proff. The material is not easy and there is a lot of memorization, but I have never been so much interested in going to the lectures and actually doing the work.
Evan is clear, articulate, and engaging. As heavy as the course load is, he outlines what to expect, and how to succeed. On the flip-side: exams are hard. I found myself not realizing how in-depth I needed to be with absolutely every concept.
Will outright tell you that the exams are memorization heavy but also narrow down exactly what might come up.Lectures are interesting & feel like oyu're listening to someone who remembers what being in your shoes was like. Audio recordings of the lectures are provided and were the primary reason I did better than I thought I would. Make flashcards>
Course is heavy but taking it with Evan makes it bearable. Amazing guy, lenient with marking, and very smart. 3 hour lectures are a pain to attend but somehow he makes them as engaging as he can. He also encourages a lot of discussion about psychology so he's very approachable to talk to about anything.
Class content was heavy and involves a lot of memorizing, but he made the lectures interesting, and enjoyable. He gives you hints as to what might be on the midterm, final and also gives you the short answers to prepare too.
In my opinion, the most outstanding lecturer in the PSYC department at SFU. Easily accessible and tirelessly committed to maintaining and improving student experience, even through the most challenging of circumstances like strikes. Tests have clear expectations and helpful study guides that should at least guarantee you a B if you complete them.
One of the best profs at SFU. Evan teaches some of the most difficult material in psych, but has clear explanations & encourages questions. He always checks in with students to see how we are doing & whether he needs to slow down, speed up, or find a different metaphor to explain something. Tests are difficult but he supports students to succeed.
Evan was one of the best profs I've had while at SFU. He knew and loved neuroscience which made learning it so much easier. He was inspiring and had opportunities to further your knowledge outside of class. He has a clear way of teaching the content which makes it easy to understand.
Knows bio psych and tries to incorporate interesting info into his lectures. It's a hard course, but Evan is a great Prof
Clear lectures +uploads audio recordings of them that you can watch later. Communicates frequently and through canvas/email so you don't have to stress if you miss a class and don't know what was said in it. Lets you know what topics are coming on the exams so there aren't any surprised if you're prepared. also checked in with us on how we're doing
This was my 3rd course with Evan and once again he proves why is my fav prof I've had at SFU. Good lectures, always helpful, gives you time to prepare short answers for the exams which are really helpful. Lectures are recorded if you are unable to make it as well. This type of course content isnt easy but Evan made it clear!
One of my favourite profs, he is caring and provides students with all of the information that they will need. He even provides study guides which are the questions that are on the exams! He provides lecture recordings so you are not stressed if you miss class or cannot catch something in class, and he is accessible and super clear with grading.
Probably one of my favourite professors at sfu. He genuinely want his students to do well. He has a few written assignment worth 10% each and mid terms. His lectures are super helpful and recorded. Lots of studying from the textbook and lectures so if you put in the work you will do well. I don't think his classes are curved. Highly recommend Evan
The semester started well. Great review sessions for midterms and lectures were recorded. By the end of the semester, we didn't get a review class for the last exam, and the format was changed. I sent multiple emails that went unanswered to both him and the TA. This was a 5/5 prof in the beginning who fell off by the end when he was needed most.
Engaging, approachable, and passionate. Evan takes extremely technical and at times difficult material and makes it captivating. He also very obviously cares about his students. If you have the chance, you should take a class with him! Great prof, great dude.
overall good prof and exams are easy if u've done any anatomy and physiology courses
Dr. Caldbick was very approachable, which was good because I found the instructions on assignments to be pretty vague and I almost always had to clarify what was expected. However, he provided the written answer questions that would be on the final a few weeks before the exams, which was great. Overall a pretty nice prof.
He is a pretty good prof. I really liked this course because the exams were online. However that being said, they expect you to write more better for the written questions. Also, it is a little more difficult to get a good grade in this class because 90%+ is in the A range and 80%-90% is B range. Projects are short and are fun!
Dr Caldbick overall was a decent prof. He wasn't a tough grader although the cutoff for an A+ for summer 2024 was 96.7%. The class at times felt a bit unorganized but overall was an easy course
Evan is very passionate in what he teaches, and it shows. There were 4 exams which is where majority of your grade comes from, but no final. The grading is a bit weird since your A range is a lot higher than regular courses. Exams were ok, a lot of the mc questions were in the textbook, however, written portions were a hit or miss.
Mr. C was one of my first professors at SFU and he is amazing. His grading was fair and assignments were not too hard. Since it is a psychology class, expect to read alot and reviewing is a must. I've crammed the exams and it is way too difficult to cram all the information since it is quite heavy. Overall I would 10/10 take a class with him again.
He is a great guy! If you go to the extra lectures, he gives the bonus questions on exams. He is straightforward and his explanations make sense. Overall the best professor I've had.
Dr. Caldbick releases all the possible written questions for exams. He has clear lecture slides. Exams are very fair. Overall happy to answer questions and good lecturer!
He's an amazing professor and is really clear on expectations. His classes aren't hard as long as you review your notes and exams aren't bad, mostly multiple choice. It's fair and assignments were short and easy, and will give you hints for the exam if you go to the shorter classes. His explanations are clear and easy to understand.
Just like everybody says, he's so next level nice and smart. I never had another prof that would invite questions so much. Also, unlike most profs that would do anything to make attendance mandatory, he records all lectures. I literally had to rewatch some lectures twice cause of how hard the material is. Idk what I'd do if that wasn't an option.
Hands down one of the best psychology profs at SFU. He is very clear when explaining some of the most difficult topics in psychology, he encourages questions and discussions to clarify topics Two-hour core lecture,one-hour supplementary/spill-over lecture. Midterm (25%),paper outline (5%),paper introduction (10%),paper (4 pages 20%),final (40%)
absolute king. very intelligent and explains things in ways that are easy to understand. if biology is not your thing do not take. it's beneficial to always stay on top of your work and know what's going on in the class - if you fall behind it's hard to pick back up. overall love this guy 🙌 gorp core king and down to earth chill person
awesome professor. I'm glad I got to learn my first psych course with Dr.Caldbick. He is very respectable, calming professor. He can teach you very well. Read the text(if you want an A), GO to his tutorials, ask questions about psychology or even your own experiences, slides are enough to pass the exams, but recommend reading the book
Evan was a decent prof, just very boring. PSYC 100 is a very boring class in general, but it didn't seem like he was interested in anything he was teaching, making it much harder to engage as a student. He barely got through 25 slides in 2 hours since he talked and answered many off topic questions. Also lot's of his explanations made no sense
The grading scheme he uses is interesting as it's a point system rather than traditional percentages. 4 exams: (3 in person, 1 online, with a 5th optional one that's also online to replace your lowest out of the 4). He takes your best 4 so I recommend doing it anyways. Exam questions for the MCQ were from textbook and slides; written was slides.
Great prof but lectures were just him reading off the slides! Tests were relatively easy but reading the textbook definitely helps to do really good in the class.
Dr Caldbick was fantastic. Super interesting, smart, and instead of a midterm and final you had 4 in-person unit exams. He explained things well and was clear. Definitely read the textbook for the exams, and the assignments were incredibly simple and the TAs marked easily. Highly recommend!
Evan was an okay prof but the lectures felt like I was there all day long as they went by so slow. It took a long time to get through the slides. The exams were not too hard.
Very nice prof and enjoyed his lectures although it is very content and memorization heavy. If this is not your main focus you will not get more than C. He marks hard I would say and the exams are not fun. You need to make a lot of time for class which I did not do but if you don't have time for it it is passable with around a C
I enjoyed his class very much! I agree that you should read the textbook and not solely depend on lectures for tests. I recommend attending all lectures and taking detailed notes of the textbook. I promise, by doing this you will get a good grade:)
My 4th and unfortunately last class with Evan. Style of his class ran the same as previous. Great lectures as always. The material was prob the most toughest since taking his classes but still doable. Thanks for being a great prof during my undergrad!
Caldbick clearly has a passion for what is being taught & it shows through lectures. Really good at making examples/easy ways to remember difficult information/topics for the exams. Overall the exams, if you studied, were straight forward. Midterm and Final were MC&SA, with the exact SA given before hand to study. I would 100% take from again!
Lectures are timesinks. PPTs are shorthand and best understood when paired with whatever lecture he intends to give, but because he doesn't manage class time well, 3/4 of class time is just him entertaining random student questions that prevent him from getting to relevant/testable info. Prepare to teach yourself almost everything from textbook.
Good prof clearly cares about students. If you put in the work, you can easily get a good grade; preparation sheets are given a week before the exam. This was my first semester of uni and i wasn't ready for the amount of work in such a "short" period. But I know that if I was to take it on my second or third semester I would do very well.
Lots of reading but super fair questions that make sense. Put in the work, get good mark
Good Prof. Will be sad when he leaves. Answers any questions you have, clear and gives you the ideas on what he will do on exams so showing up and looking at what he posts will give you a lot of help. Just keep in mind, there was a two part project for the semester + exams so good luck. Prepares you for uni.
Professor Caldbick is the best professor I have had at SFU and the school is making a big mistake letting him go. He is better then 90% of the professors at SFU, his lectures are amazing, he is genuinely passionate about teaching. He makes students feel very comofortable and answers any question. It's a huge loss for students at SFU to see him go.
Dr. Evan was an absolute pleasure to have as a prof, delivering the course in a very interesting manner, constantly adjusting his teaching style to benefit his students. You could genuinely see his passion for this course… In all honesty the BEST prof I've had in my entire career at SFU. It's so unfortunate that this is his last semester here.
Evan is such an amazing professor, one of the best in Psyc. He genuinely cares for his students and has a passion for teaching unlike many profs at SFU. It is a huge disappointment that SFU doesn't value him as much as his students do, and he will be greatly missed.
girl lemme tell u wsp. THIS PROF IS AMAZING!! you will do well as long as u put in the work, tests are very very fair. thank u evan.
being so fr he is such a nice prof! idk my grade yet but he definetly grades fairly if you do the work. good personality! gives short answer questions ahead of time for midterm and final which is nice. only thing is wish the final was not worth 40%. SFU NEEDS TO KEEP HIM! truely a tragedy
My fav psyc prof so far. Sometimes his notes were a little bit hard to understand (you really have to know and understand bio psych vocab and concepts) but nonetheless if u attend lectures, you'll understand the material very well! His exams were always fair as well, so sad he's leaving, we love prof caldbick :(
Dr. Caldbick is hands down the best prof I've had so far. His teaching style is very engaging and he does a Q&A to check in with everyone's understanding. The grading criteria were clear, and I loved the teaching assignment! Very thankful that he gives study guides to prepare for the exam. We will miss you!
Not an easy or particularly interesting course but Evan is a terrific instructor.
Evan is a great lecturer and I really enjoyed taking 280 with him. This is not an easy course but the material covered is constantly used in upper div courses. Evan does a great job of covering this material and making sure no one gets left behind in lectures. His exams are fair and directly related to the material.
I was very lucky to take 3 courses with Evan at SFU. He is truly an exceptional and inspirational instructor. PSYC 382 can be overwhelming at times, but his teaching style is clear, concise and engaging. I learned so much from his lectures and discussions. His exams are fair and directly related to content.
psyc 280 was very enjoyable with dr caldbick as my prof, exams were not hard, as he made sure to outline what would be on the midterm and final by giving us a list of potential questions that would be on the test. i found lectures to be very slow but he did it to make sure we were all understanding the material
