Guys alright. He makes lectures interesting, especially for 8am but I will say that my approval of him has been declining as the semester goes on. Tests are essays but the way he lectures doesn't make it too hard. He is kind of a picky grader on papers though but not terrible. For a gen ed this class isn't bad just show up and pay attention.

2 exams: a midterm and final - all essay and some identification. 3 papers: 1 pg, 3 pg, 4 pg - not bad can be tricky on grading but not hard to get a B+/A on them. Class isn't mandatory but unless you have some insane knowledge of US History, not sure how you pass the exams. Class kind of feels like story time - take him, overall worth it.

His lectures were interesting - doesn't focus on specifics so you dont have to memorizes dates or anything like that. 3 relatively easy papers (longest is 4pages), and all-esaay Midterm and Final (non-cumulative). Prof Friss is a funny guy and makes coming to class interesting. The projects were fun and intellectually challenging, which were a good and bad thing at times. We had 5 modules, each a different medium, and we got to choose our topic. There wasn't too much homework, but he can be a tough grader on the summaries and the projects.

Really nice guy. Keeps lectures interesting by making some jokes. Gives good feedback. Workload is very manageable. There are few tests/assignments that you are graded on, but as long as you give decent effort you'll be straight.

If you are ok with only 5 grades being the entirety of the class, choose Prof. Friss. The tests are free-response, which is really nice. There is only one paper, and it is super flexible and allows you to explore your interests. Super relaxed professor, absolutely recommend taking his class, you will actually care about history a bit more.

Super funny and nice professor. I never read the textbook once but you do have to go to class and take notes. The exams are based off of the lectures, so if you go to class you'll do fine. He keeps the material interesting and hes also a cutie. Moderately easy class, great professor

He's a great professor! He makes lectures very interesting. He makes learning about history fun. One of the best history professors I had at JMU. He cares about his students and is super understanding. His TA's for this semester were also really cool, helpful and nice. Really cool guy and would definetly recommend taking one his classes. 10/10

Dr. Friss is great. So funny and so chill. Does not take attendance and class is purely lecture. There is a lot of reading for the discussion sections but you can skim and be fine. Tests are long and require you to know about all of the documents but I got A's on all by skimming them. Go to lectures/discussion and take notes and you'll be chillin'.

Friss is pretty good. The only complaint I really have is that his format for testing is 10 images which you have to just word vomit a paragraph for and then thats the test. He is a pretty chill professor and I would take him again. Got a good grade and his class boosted up my GPA since its 4 credits. + There is a seminar section.

Dr. Friss is a great guy and is passionate about history. This class was very lecture heavy and you have to give it your full attention. There are also lots of readings for reading quizzes during the discussion which over the semester he has made them easier. He genuinely cares about students and lightens up the class throughout.

Professor Friss is probably the best teach at JMU for history he's very funny and made my class enjoyable even while it was an 8am. attendance isnt technically mandatory unless you want to fail the test. Every test is based off of pictures and topics that he brings up in class so if you don't go you won't be able to answer the questions on the test

Prof. Friss is one of the best professors I've ever had. He makes US history so interesting and often makes a few jokes here and there. While it's an 8am, he makes the class fun. He gives 3 tests and weekly reading quizzes, but the readings are interesting so I'd definitely recommend reading them! Also gives an Op-ed essay that's not too bad!

If you are taking this class to raise your GPA, DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. There are much easier geneds that you can take in this cluster. Professor Friss is very passionate about history, but unless you're a history buff, he seems like a try-hard that will only distract you from your significant courses that are important.

Friss is the best professor I've had at JMU. He is willing to talk outside of class and is interested to what is happening with his students. His lectures are interesting and you have weekly quizzes based off the readings he assigns. He provides the readings for you online. The readings are long but interesting and help with good grade on quiz

I took professor Friss over the summer during the online session, which was acronymous. He makes canvas very clear, easy to understand, and accessible. He gives quizzes almost day, which were to be completed at your own pace. Great professor, especially for an easy summer course!
