VERY VERY HARD CLASS. NOT EASY TO GET A GOOD GRADE. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Challenging but fair. Charismatic and engaging. Interviewed on national tv alot lately, so kind of a star, but very down-to-earth. Don't miss taking a class with him.
If you plan on going to law school, dont' talk to him. He will absolutely crush you and tell you it's impossible without even seeing your grades or resume
He makes the course much harder than it should be because he has no idea how to be a good teacher. He is very unclear in his lectures. I hope he leaves our campus and goes into practicing law instead of teaching...Nice man, bad teacher!
Worse teacher in the department! Strange man, even stranger teacher.
Accused me of plagiarism. Showed him all my research and he figured out in about two minutes that nothing was plagiarised, he just didn't believe I could write a paper that good. He failed to apologize. Guess what ****? I made Law Review. Avoid.
I've never taken him but that's because he was a jerk before I even got a chance to! If his attitude is an indication of his interest in students, he should really retire!!!
BEST PROFESSOR EVER-makes even american politics INTERESTING...very fair and openminded, very intelligent and insightful, great person overall! have to really study tho-tests are hard, attendance mandatory but best lecturer ive ever had, really cares about people in general-would take over again
HE IS A FAIR TEACHER, CHALLENGING BUT KIND. HE GIVES YOU ALL THE MATERIALs YOU NEED TO KNow. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THE SUBJECT YOU WILL FIND HIS CLASS INTERESTING, NOT BORING AT ALL. THERES NO HOMEWORK ONLY READINGS.
My two classes with Evan were very challenging, but ultimately the most rewarding. I learned more in his constitution classes than in any other classes that I took and still remember and use the information five years later.
Makes class clear with organized structure. Take reasonable notes and learn the terms and you'll do fine. The weekly current event quizzes, though, can hurt you if you don't read the paper. Pretty fair grader but more on the tough side.
Excellent. Great lectures, very clear. Keyterms make it easy to memorize, ask questions, and take notes. Incorporates a lot of current events. Helpful. Best teacher at LMU yet.
Very clear, organized talker. Has an excellent knowledge of politics, does not let personal bias get in the way. I find myself on the front of my chair leaning forward during his lectures.
Lecutres are fun to go to, take if you have an interest in politics; you will enjoy going to class.
If you're willing to put in the time, you can get a good grade in his class. I enjoyed his lectures and definitely retained the information he taught--more so than other teachers.
Knowledgeable, challenging, raises the level of the class for everyone, in the best sense. No nonsense, but with a sense of humor.
his class rocks if you are interested in politics. one midterm one paper one final. know ur key terms for the exams, and do the readings for the essay portion. his gradings reflect only how well u do on the exams, so know your sh**.
Most challenging class I ever had, but it truly gives you a new perspective on the importance of law in America.
Dr. Gerstmann is perhaps the best pre-law professor in the area. His prior experience as a High-End corporate lawyer qualifies him just a bit. His Con Law classes are EXTREMELY difficult if you do not keep up with the reading. But it's the best teaser to law school your gonna get aside from a Barbri class.
One of the most interesting and engaging teachers I've ever had. Connects with you on a real personal level and can make even the most boring of political or legal topics interesting and relative. One of my favorite teachers of all time. I'll never forget Mr. Gerstmann
Disorganized and unprepared.
Hands down the most articulate, challenging, and intelligent prof in the department, perhaps the college. Incredibly difficult, but worth every bit of it.
I loved his class! very clear, interesting, one of the best teachers in the department! you have to take his class you won't regret it!
A little arrogant, but a very strong teacher. (don't really understand the disorganized comment, because he was that and then some).
Great teacher. Take him if you can, he has an excellent way of presenting the information.
Tried to intimidate students, subjective grading of answers, disorganized
Unclear in lectures, 50% of lecture time has no relation to exams, highly intelligent but lets that get in the way of being a professor, uses class time as personal vehicle to brag about himself
Tries to scare you from day one, talks himself up throughout the course of the year, fairness is questionable
Seriouly, I have NO idea who these peole are talking about. Ive taken numerous classes with Gerstmann and hes my favorite prof at LMU, he is so smart and approachable, and he cares about his students a lot. Material is dry but he makes it as interesting as anyone could, hes a tough but fair grader. Dont leave lmu without taking a class with him!!!
I have no idea what the person below me is talking about, avoid at all costs
he is the most horrible man on earth. Very rude and pretentious and thinks hes the supreme master of the world. No joke DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! Better yet, don't even speak to this man
I love this professor! He is nice and as long as u take notes its pretty easy!
Dr. Gerstmann is one of the best professors at LMU. His class isn't easy but if you do the work and put effort in, you will learn a lot from him. He knows his stuff. He grades fairly and takes an interest in his students. He'll try to point you in the right direction with your interests even outside of class, like for internships.
Smart? Yes. Clear? Not at all. Helpful inside and outside of class? NO. Is insulting and condescending. Thinks he knows everything and you know nothing. Respect is not a two-way street here.
Strong teacher, helpful outside of class. A prof U should definitely take.
A great prof. Really clear and well organized. He's very helpful in class and out.
one of the smartest and best professors at LMU. I've had 3 classes with him. He's very clear from the beginning about he wants and how he grades. You learn not only about the law but current events. He's always organized and gives many examples of previous cases and how they apply.
I really liked this class. The key terms made it easy to take notes; tehy all connected to each other and Gerstmann explained them very well. He always made sure everyone understood, always asked if there were questions. This class actually made me want to teach at a university level and I've never want to teach.
I really enjoy this professor's sense of excitement about what he teaches. He is always interested in hearing what we have to say and forcing us to think further always.
The lectures were great and the movies were a great way to illustrate the points. I really enjoyed the format with the lectures, readings and movies. The discussions were interesting too. More advice about the final would have been nice though. I learned alot about the law.
The guy is pretty self-absorbed, thinks he is the final authority on everything and loves to hear himself talk. Spoke with him a couple times about law school, told me I would never make it, ripped me apart repeatedly on essays and finals. I have made honors and am doing quite well in law school. This is a hit or miss experience for most students.
The lecture and discussion was semi-socratic which helped alot in getting ready for law school. He's challenging, but one of the best professors at LMU. He's always willing to meet, even when he's busy.
This course always challenged me but I came away learning so much. There was a lot of student participation and the students seemed like they were usually prepared. This course definitely awakened my interest in legal matters and now I'm considering a legal carreer.
This was my best class at LMU. I had other good classes, but this is the only one I looked forward to every class. Great professor!
I'm in my third year at law school and I took two classes with Dr. Gerstmann when I was at LMU. He made a huge difference in my LMU experience. He helped me focus my law school appication and helped me decide whether to retake the LSAT. I'm at a top 20 law school and I don't think I would be without him.
great teacher! he is hard but he teaches majors for the majority. I learned more in his class then my other pols classes combined, hes a great teacher lectures a bit much but how else can u teach this material. He's a lot of help and helps you get involved, im a better student because of him
Best teacher at LMU!
I've taken two classes with him. They were always lively and interesting. He's intimidating at first but not after a while. The tests were fair and he was clear what he wanted. He never wasted time and he was very helpful during office hours.
I really liked his style. He's intense but that's because he takes the students seriously. Every class was interesting and he challenged us to think about things in new ways. The exams were fair if you studied for them and didn't just focus on one or two things.
Good, but not the best.
Incredible professor. He helped me with my law school application essay and how to present myself to law school. He wants to help students be ready for law school when they get there. He challenges you in class but in a good way.
He formed an opinion early on that I have no business attending law school. I took Con Law I with him, knew the material, nailed the exam, and still only received a B. Just got back an A in Con Law I in law school (heavily curved), participate on the honors journal, and am on a merit scholarship. Clear evidence of favoritism and personal bias.
I learned alot from him and he forced to think. I was always engaged in his classes, which were always organized and up and to date on current events in the law. The classes I've taken with Gerstmann have been the most interesting and informative of my time at LMU. The lectures were always on topic with no irrelevant digressions.
Great professor. A bit biased in favor of Obama but generally he tries to be fair.
I'm not a political science major so I only took this one class from him, but after 4 years here I'd say he's the best professor I had at LMU. He mixed lectures with discussion and got everyone thinking and talking about political issues. I feel like I understand how things work much better because I had this class.
He's a really good communicator and a fair grader. The tests a challenging but cover the important things. He is always available for office hours and is very helpful. I always learned something new in his classes and was never bored. I'm going to take him again for sure.
Dr. Gerstmann is very approachable and he made the class interesting and easy to understand.
He has unique insight and plays the devil's advocate to force us to really think about what we believe. He never wastes a minute and we get exposed to a lot of diverse ideas. Class discussions and readings were good too. I learned so much in this class.
He is passionate about politics and super smart.
Very nice and funny too :) He is very straightfoward and keeps things challenging without being ridiculously indirect or mysterious.
Great professor. Helpful in and out of class.
He's everything a college level professor should be. Knows his stuff and explains so we can understand it. Doesn't spoon feed but answers questions clearly. A smart, no BS professor who seems to like his students and likes being a teacher.
I've taken all his courses and now that I'm graduating I'm going to miss his classes.
professor Gerstmann is amazing. He always has examples to make his points and he's easy to understand. I like the he doesn't just repeat the readings in class but uses them as a basis for discussion. This class was never boring
I'm in law school now and his classes were a huge help. If you have any interest in being a lawyer, he's the one to take.
Outstanding professor. Gerstmann's class got me much more interested in law and in politics. After his class I picked up a minor in political science and I'm taking him again in the fall. He's passionate about what he teaches and is open minded about what other people think. He challenges you to give reasons for what you say.
Outstanding prof!
I really liked Gerstmann. Challenging, clear and reasonable.
I took his summer class and loved it! It was really interesting and I nejoyed lecture and class discussion, I would definitely take him again.
Prof Gerstmann is an amazing professor. He is a brilliant man who is great at teaching. He is always willing to help you if you need it, and he's very approachable. If you want to ever go to law school, his class is great to prepare you. He's also a funny guy! I really enjoyed class with him
BY FAR the best Professor at LMU. Nicest guy in the world and is genuinely there for his students. Changing lives one lecture at a time. My favorite class and professor of all time. Gerstmaan is the BUSINESS!
He is the BEST professor ever!! Great person, very helpful and always there for his students. I took two classes with him, and love him very much. Class is challenging , but you will get more for your tuition money. Highly recomended for Law school going students.
I took his media controversies class this summer and he is a really good teacher and he is good when it comes to law. his class is a lot for a short term make sure you do the reading and try to turn your essay in a head of time for him to pre grade because he is a tough grader. super knowledgeable and will be there for you. hard A easy B
Knowledgable, but extremely obtuse. To quote Isaac Asimov, a "smooth and pretentious sleekness".
Gerstmann's classes were some of the best I had here and my favorite political science classes. The lectures are really interesting and he isn't biased when it comes to class discussion. I actually looked forward to coming to his classes. I would definitely take him again.
Believe me, avoid him. Incredibly unorganized. Not accessible outside class. Will make you discuss very uncomfortable topics in front of the entire class. Grading also unclear. Do NOT recommend!
Unorganized, assignments unclear, due dates unclear, no feedback, grading inconsistent, participation mandatory, can be very inappropriate at times. Do not recommend.
Entire semester will not return any assignments or give any sort of feedback to students. May be very surprised with your final grade. If you want to pass, I recommend just agreeing with all his opinions. Very disappointing course and professor.
Best professor I've had at LMU. He promotes engaging discussion and presents challenging material in a digestible way. He is respectful of all viewpoints and encourages students to think critically. From what I know, he leads the class just like a law school course. Overall, a very rewarding experience.
Professor Gerstmann was by far the best professor I had while in undergrad. He was very supportive and encouraging, and is especially helpful to talk to during office hours. If you put in the effort, you can do well in his class. After now having started law school, I can attest that his class prepares you well for the reality and is a huge benefit
Professor Gerstmann is an amazing professor who truly cares about his students. If you have any trouble in his class he is very accessible through office hours and is very helpful.
I loved Professor Gerstmann. His lectures seem more like conversations and are very interesting. He is always accessible outside of class. Our grade consisted of around 10 reading quizzes (very easy), a midterm, a policy paper (8 pages), policy debate, participation, and the final. The midterm and the final are hard but everything else is easy.
Professor Gerstmann was by far my favorite professor I took during undergrad at LMU. His ConLaw classes were tough but extremely rewarding and I found them to be a lot of fun. It is evident during his classes that he is passionate about what he does and really cares about his students. He works hard to ensure that his students succeed.
Best teacher I EVER had. Period. Taking his classes makes you a more articulate student and critical thinker. Do not hesitate. Take this class. For the record, his grading couldn't be more straightforward (based on two tests and 10% for participation). He also has open office hours and is ALWAYS here.
Professor Gerstmann is one of the best POLS professors at LMU. If you want to go to law school, TAKE HIM. He cares and loves to talk during office hours. ConLaw is a challenging course but one of the more useful ones. He doesn't care if you have different political views he just wants to make sure you understand your views in legal situations.
I loved this summer course with Prof Gerstmann. This class made me want to go to law school! He's super accessible and easy to talk to during office hours and actually wants you to succeed. His classes r hard, but you learn a lot of info. This class had a debate which was super cool and a fun way to test. I def recommend him to anyone!
College without Prof Gerstmann? Unimaginable! He's passionate, caring, and motivating. ConLaw is challenging but is so rewarding and worth it if you are committed to the work. Prof G is a remarkable mentor and is among LMU's finest. Esp if you are an aspiring lawyer, get to know Prof G and take Con Law!! I am so grateful to have learned from him!
Deeply problematic in so many ways. Not a matter of politics, either (he is very conservative but claims not to be), but a matter of how he treats people, especially women.
Great professor! Someone said he treats women badly which is false. I'm a woman and in taking his classes, he made me feel very welcomed and cared for at LMU. If you go to his office hours and put effort in, he will help you and you will do well! He listens to both sides which is commendable during discussions and very clear rubric grading.
His teaching lacked clarity and empathy. His harsh, negative demeanor in office hours was especially troubling; he forced probing questions about my personal loss, showing no compassion. His approach to women felt uncomfortable, and his teaching style was rigid and unsupportive. I would not recommend this class, especially to female/queer students.
I've taken 3 classes with Prof Gerstamann, and I don't know how he has bad reviews. I'm a woman who regularly attends his office hours, and I have never felt uncomfortable around him, in fact, quite the contrary. He's been very welcoming, supportive, and respectful every time I've seen him. Take his class if you're considering going to law school.
He's an excellent professor. If you are going to law school, you need to be taking professor's like Finkel and him. As a sophomore his class has been challenging for me, but in all honesty it's just made me a better student. If you need help, ASK HIM, he'll give you the tools you need to do well. Just make sure you are ready to take the steps.
The absolute worst kind of person to be teaching this class.
He does not know the difference between teaching students concepts vs preaching his opinions and enforcing them on everyone. Take someone else because it is an interesting course. Also gave weird vibes.
Assigns basically 100 pages of reading or more a week and takes a general ed class way too seriously. The lectures are interesting but he does not understand that students have other work outside his class.
The negative reviews couldn't be further from the truth! Gerstmann's seminar was my favorite class at LMU. He explains complex topics clearly, never makes you feel dumb, his expectations are clear, & he gives you the tools to succeed. You'll never be blindsided by him. Does not treat women unfairly either. You won't regret taking a class with him!
I have always been an A student and I attended every class and took extensive notes. I was worried about the final which was worth 45% of the grade (midterm was worth 40%) so I went in for office hours. His demeanor was dismissive, his answers were vague and unhelpful, and I felt humiliated/inferior as if I was burderning him with my questions.
Professor Gerstmann's CONLAW1 class is a rewarding experience. The lectures are engaging, and the material is presented in a digestible way. For study prep, Unstuck AI and the textbook are really helpful. Attend class, think critically, and you'll do well.
This course really help solidify my desire to go to law school. Professor Gerstmann is an incredibly intelligent professor and clearly loves what he is teaching, making his class very enjoyable. I will not lie, this was probably the hardest class I've taken so far at LMU, but it also has been the most rewarding. Recommend for juniors/seniors.
US POLITICS- my favorite class in Poli Sci so far. How to pass his class: (1)He is lecture heavy, anything could be on the midterm and final exams, so take good notes. The lecture notes will also serve as your study guide for exams. (2) Weekly quizzes, 3 questions on textbook reading and online sources, just skim for mains. (3)Midtrm, Final, Paper
Super great guy who gives good lectures. The only work that you have to do for the whole semester for POLS-1200 is a 3-question quiz on the reading every week, a midterm, a debate, a paper, and a final.
This was a great class. He's a thought-provoking professor who cares deeply about the success of his students. Being a non-poli sci major was not a barrier for this class. There were not many assignments but weekly quizzes based on a lot of content. No textbook but I did have to buy a subscription to WSJ and NYT.
I am a current senior in his class and he has reminded me why I have chosen to pursue law school. The class is hard itself but he is not trying to make it harder. One of the best professors in the Poli Sci department. If you want to go to law school it should be mandatory you take his class. I wish I could have taken even more classes of his,
