Great teacher. I loved his history lessons.I loved seeing him every day. Gave me a desire to learn more history.
the mad scientist that likes to wave his hands.
Wanders off topic frequiently, not an effective teacher
Went off topic often, briefly covered important topics & gave few examples
Hacketts class was the only engineering class that i looked forward to. He was hilarious but at the same time was able to effectively teach the material. Great teacher
goes of topic frequently, but he's so damn hilarious ill forgive him
He may be funny, but ask for help and he'll give you a direction to go but it might not be the right one- you need more than humor to organize and teach a class which is difficult. Poof and theres the answer is not a teaching technique
Ok take this equation..a couple numbers..now wave your hands and you got the answer. Great prof, one of the best at Grant MacEwan.
A really nice guy with a good sense of humour. However, his notes are kinda disorganized and often have mistakes in them. He also rushes through examples, jumping to conclusions too fast which sometimes makes him hard to follow. Overall he's good, but simply not great.
Excellent teacher. Very approachable. Wouldn't straight out give you the answer to a problem, but would make sure you could understand it conceptually so that you could figure it out on your own.
He's a great teacher and a great guy. Exams are tough but totally fair. A little slow in the marking department, but he gets it done when it has to be done.
really good prof, way better than aaquist. tons of fun but really tries hard to make sure everyone gets the concepts. very approachable outside of class

This guy is awsome! haha he makes me laugh and teaches very well. good to bs with after class too
Great Prof!! His enthusiasm makes you want to go to class & is genuinely concerned about the students progress. Easy to talk to, a really good person to know in general. Highly recommended.
very funny and a fantastic teacher
Haha, he made a joke about this site recently, so I hope he reads this someday. He is a really great prof. His tests are pretty fair, but the multiple choice can kill your mark. He is very helpful and nice and goes through concepts very well. He has a great attitude and while I hate physics, I actually like the class mostly due to him teaching it.
AVOID HACKETT!!!!! Soooo bad, always off topic, tests nothing like his notes and he is never in his office
Not effective at all. Multiple choice weighting on exams is rediculous. I learned more from the text than this guy - his class notes are not very consistent with exams. Messy lecture notes make him jump all over the whiteboard, adding this and that. Don't expect your exams to be marked within any reasonable length of time after writing.
Do not take his class, exams are way harder than examples in class, he is never ever in his office, he feels the need to joke instead of teach. It takes forever to get exams marked, and if you go see him about an exam question all his answers start with "The trick to this one..." The worst instructor ever and I got an A in his class.
he jokes around consistently and never gets down to what is on the assignments. i dropped his class right after i wrote the 1st midterm because he cannot relate what we learn in class to the tested material. his jokes are recycled garbage and get old after 1 week. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS!
This professor is terrible. He trys harder to be funny than he does to teach. And he fails at both. If you take his class please don't laugh at his jokes, it only encourages him. And when he does teach, he barely uses any examples. Opting for the easiest examples he can find rather than the ones that will be similar to the test questions.
Horable methods of teaching just skims through the material doesnt give a care about anyone's understanding and he always downgrades us with the comaprision of his engineering students and puts students down in front of others
Great instructor. Exams are fair; put an effort into the course and you'll do fine. He covers the material thoroughly, and is always willing to help. These are university physics courses so you can't expect his tests to be identical to notes/assignments. You have to be able to apply your knowledge to other situations as well. Too many whiners.
Greatest teacher ever I really looked forward to going to each of his classes. His exam questions are always similar to the problems in his notes/assignments/ mastering physics. A+ to Dr.Hackett.
One of the most personable instructors I had at Macewan. Energetic and enthusiastic in the lectures, and approachable and helpful in his office. Also good to talk to about physics in general. His tests are fair and I thought some of the questions were well thought out. Good sense of humor too, although some of the other people don't seem to agree.
Makes stupid jokes. You can either love them or hate them. I liked most. As far as the lecture, decent teaching. However, I'm the type of person who thinks waves can be much more easy to understand when seen in action, so his lack of use of good visual aids was disappointing. Might want to memorize 'shortcut formulas' for his exams.
Awesome teacher, helps you out.
This class was the only class i looked forward to coming to each day. Although the course itself wasn't very interesting. I came for the jokes, however lame they maybe they were awesome. If you can i would suggest trying to get him as your prof the jokes are more then worth it.
He makes the LAMEST jokes in the world; they're so bad that it makes them funny, in some weird way. As for his teaching, he's pretty decent but he can be so scatterbrained and absent-minded that he will make otherwise simple topics incomprehensible. But, he's such a lighthearted guy and is helpful during office hours, so I still recommend him.
"they aren'y shy, they're outgoing rays" enough said, this guy rocks
"So a neutron walks into a bar and asks the price of a beer. The Bartender replies, 'For you? No charge!'" Hackett is one of the greatest Science profs at MacEwan and if you're a pretty wooden person if you don't crack up at his jokes every now and again. The fact that he tries to spice up the material shows his dedication to his field.
Definitely the best physics prof and possibly the best prof at MacEwan. His teaching style is amazing as his explanations are crystal clear which lessens the amount of out of class studying. He is super helpful and very approachable during office hours. And his jokes do make the class entertaining -even if they are a little lame at times.
He has pretty good notes and is very clear. If are going to sit in his class, I would suggest sitting on the right side. He tends to cover block the view from the left alot. His jokes may be lame but they are pretty funny and tend to relieve tension. He is also very helpful during office hours. I highly recommend this instructor.
Awesome teacher. He's super funny and makes it really easy to understand. I'm not sure what is up with the negative reviews about this guy. Everyone in my class loved him.
Nice guy, helpful and very funny. Don't pay much attention to his practice midterms and final, he changes them a lot and he always finds a way to trick students
Great prof, makes physics fun but does sometimes get sidetracked which is a little distracting but enhances the learning experience in the end
very funny and easy to talk to. loves to tell jokes and make people laugh. little scatter brained but very good teacher. very helpful just got to ask.
Great Teacher. Midterms are fairly easy, if you can do 3star questions in the txtbook then your good for them. Overall he's a nice guy but doesnt really explain concepts thouroughly. He needs more examples and to stop goofing off, about 30 mins of class is him just talking about random stuff. Theres no formula sheet, you make your own..Dislike ALOT
Great Prof. Probably my favorite in that semester. He gives great notes and examples in class that will actually help you do the homework and study for tests. Although making your own formula sheet is a bit of a hassle, it helps you learn the formulas.
He was ok.. could of been much better... he seemed disorganized, confused with his notes, and unable to clarify when asked certain questions. He had to correct himself multiple of times, and his writing is not that neat. He IS although a very happy helpful man. HE NEEDS THE FULL SOLUTIONS FOR THE PRACTICE MIDTERMS, because if you dont get it screwd
Sharp as a tack, full of energy, and always a great help. If you need anything clarified you can ask in class or during his office hours and he'll set everything straight. His sense of humour is impecable and a real plus to the classes he instructs.
Probably my favorite prof I had in my first year! He is a bit quirky, and makes corny jokes but for some reason they are hilarious. One time he reached in his pocket looking for a marker, and exclaimed " Oops that's not it." He gives excellent notes and explains concepts very well. His tests are also straightforward and fair!
Awesome physics teacher, very passionate with what he teaches and passes it along to his students. He even sat with me and my friends at a 'Higgs Boson' presentation to explain any difficulties, went above and beyond expectations. His tests are fair, and gives you adequate hints/ preparatory questions.(Great humor!) CHOOSE his class if possible!!
Great professor, impossible exams, not related to in class at all.
Dr Hackett is always able to help whenever someone needs it. He comes to class everyday with a joke and a smile on his face. His jokes are a little corny, yet hilarious. His tests weren't like examples we covered in class. He is overall a very nice guy and I would definitely recommend his class.
Dr Hackett is amazing. He's hilarious, with awful jokes, but who cares? They're still so funny. His notes are easy to read/follow and he does lots of examples. The midterms aren't a piece of cake but they're definitely fair and not overly complicated. He loves physics and made PHYS-126 an extremely enjoyable class. One of my favourite profs yet.
Although he is a funny, and enthusiastic prof, he marks VERY VERY hard on midterms and finals. I got a question right but he only gave me a 610 on that question.
Dr. Hackett's jokes are corny but at times I found myself laughing out loud at them. He really tries hard to make class enjoyable because he's so passionate. Examples are well done and easy to follow. Personally, I thought the midterms were easy - a lot easier than assignments. Do tons of practice questions before. Lab is an easy A if you show up.
Enjoyed this class very much. Definitely would recommend this professor to anyone.
He gives out part marks for not a lot of work. Physics is tough but he attempts to simplify it, passionate about physics so sometimes goes on tangents. Hilarious prof the exams often have one very hard question on them. Doesn't post notes on blackboard and doesn't always follow the textbook so go to class will also drop some hints about test.
His jokes are funny, and he makes a LOT of them. There is a lot of content, so he has to rush through everything, but he does his best to explain the main ideas and give helpful examples. Would take again.
Dr. Hackett was super funny! He always came to class with a joke and a story to tell. For the most part he was very clear and did many examples but sometimes would confuse himself. Overall, he was a great prof and tests were clear cut
He teaches at a very fast pace due to amount of material he needed to cover in our class. Really helpful if you ask and is hilarious. He makes you write your own formula sheet which is great! Not only is it your very own cheat sheet, it helps you study and learn the material. He is really passionate for physics.
Awesome guy. Super funny and always full of life. Constantly has a good attitude and maintains a light mood while telling us what we need to know. Tests were very fair, assignments were relatively simple. If you have to take an early physics class this is the man for the job.
Awesome guy, funny, good prof.
I have no idea why Evan has such a high rafting, I think he is AWFUL. I am an A student and barely passed his midterm, which the average was 49%. He is all over the place and doesn't directly answer a question without further confusion. He does crack some good jokes, but I definitely would never take another class with him.
Great sense of humour. I have him for the lab and the lecture, he explains things well and his exams are very fair. Definitely recommend him.
You have to finish the lab report during the lab period but it's not that bad. If you follow the format provided by the manual (very straightforward) and work quickly, you'll be fine (with a lab partner). You will most likely get an A in this lab unless you miss labs. He's weird and funny at the same time. There is no lab final.
The labs caused me so much anxiety with Evan idk why. You have the 3 hrs to do the lab and write it up but the labs take a good 2-2.5 hrs sometimes. He was super nice but wasn't always helpful when you're lost. He is a hard marker too and isn't clear with whats expected on the write ups. If you can work under extreme pressure he's a fine prof
He makes physics funny and if you pay attention in the lectures you will end up remembering a lot of things just by the way he says it. Very clear speaker, and will give questions in notes that are almost word-for-word on the midterm/final. Honestly he was good enough that I emailed him thanking him for being such an amazing prof.
Incredible, hilarious guy who really knows what he is talking about! Had fun in his class, would take again
He is the best physics prof I have ever had! His lectures are pretty clear and he uses a ton of examples. If you are having troubles go to his office hours. His midterms are pretty brutal, but he lets you make your own formula sheet so make sure you have a good understanding of the concepts!
Dr Hackett is a very funny prof, he knows what he is doing and he doesn't post his notes online, but going to the class can help you a lot, the assignments are fairly from the textbook, the exams are also not bad, he is a good grader and very helpful, but he marks the midterm very late, so don't expect to get it the next day.
Very funny, and his positive atttitude can really brighten up a tough school day. He lets you use formula sheets for the tests, so make sure to fill it up with examples from assignments and the textbook. I found that the first 15 minutes of class were usually a little disorganized. He answers questions thoroughly.
Evan is a great person and prof. He is so caring to all his students and would repeat something multiple times until you would understand it. He was very accommodating with the pandemic and always listened to our concerns to move things around. His tests are fair and were "open book". I am not great at physics but got a good mark in his class.
His exams are very fair. His exams questions are very similar to the example questions he has in the notes as well as the assignment questions. Super nice and kind guy thats willing to help with questions if you have them. The format of his notes were kinda bad but they are still understandable. Recorded lecture videos were a little boring.
The lectures and notes were a little unorganized but great teacher. Very helpful when you ask questions. Tests were fair and based on assignments and lectures. Very understanding and caring. Grades often took a while to come back but always provided answer key if not graded quickley.
Evan is the best physics prof at MacEwan in my opinion. Very knowledgeable, lectures well, and cares. He does like to crack jokes while lecturing which I personally enjoy. If you understand the formulas and homework assignments you should not have any problems doing well in his class. Tests are fair, 1 or 2 harder questions but not impossible 1's
I really enjoyed Dr. Hackett's class. He is hilarious. This course is basically Physics 20 using calculus. There were a lot of assignments (one every week). Deadlines are mandatory. The midterms are exactly like the assignments and are not that tricky. Lots of part marks are given! I would 100% have Dr. Hackett as a professor again.
Funny guy, but his notes during class were kind of all over the place. If you have a question, he will try his best to try and get you to understand by rewording or drawing a diagram. The difficulty of his 2nd midterm is dependent on the average of the first midterm (1st avg was very high, so he made 2nd midterm very hard, which tanked my mark)
Final worth 35%, 2 midterms worth 17.5% each, 10 assignments throughout term assignments worth 10% total, lab worth 20%. I found the class hard so make sure you attend the lectures and you NEED to study. Tests are fair with a few hard questions. Allows cheat sheet for exams. Difficulty of second midterm depends on class average of the first one.
This guy is the absolute goat.
Really good at explaining things in an understandable way during his lectures. Was always happy to talk after class and really cared if his students did well. His exams are a step up from the homework but the practice exams will prepare you well for them.
Had online during covid. Exams were similar to assignments, he had very fair grading policies and weights. His notes were super clear and the dad humor kept classes engaging and less dry. Very helpful with the assignments. He has pretty clear expectations for the exams and what he expects you to be able to solve so few curve balls without warning
Be prepared, his exams are way too hard.
The Goat. Was extremely nice and was always cracking jokes. Uses many examples to explain the idea. Prepare yourself for the midterms they are quite difficult.
Funny, easy to talk to. Tough marker and exams are wicked difficult compared to the assignments.
Dr. Hackett is just a jolly soul and a great teacher. His lectures are fast and dense, so be prepared to take notes quickly and practice up on what he teaches. Exams were tricky but mostly contained assignment questions with variables shuffled up a bit, so there were not too many curveballs.
Funny professor, likes physics but his exams are way too hard.
I really enjoyed his class. Had 2 midterms, a final and then weekly homework assignments except on midterm weeks. He made the class enviroment an enjoyable place to learn. Used alot of examples in his notes to try and get the concepts across. His midterms can be a bit difficult if you are unprepared so it is important to do the weekly assignments.
Tests were hard, went to office hours walked out more confused then I was to begin with. Class was only examples hard to follow Told me he's going to have a question on the exam that should be left to "Einstein" as that was for students who get high 90s every exam and I wasn't supposed to know how to do it. Which is mind you 10 marks per question.
Evan Hackett was a great professor for my physics 124 class. However, this class is not easy. The midterms are rather difficult. All lectures were well done and informative. Definitely would take again if given the opportunity to do so. If you take this class make sure you stay on top of the lectures and homework.
honestly i didn't find his exams as hard as some of the other reviews say, but that being said you need to stay on top of things in order to do well. he is very knowledgeable about physics and is helpful when you ask questions. i liked him overall but sometimes the assignment questions were nothing like examples done in class
His lectures are a little bit of theory but mostly examples. He cracks a lot of jokes and makes the classes fun. There's an assignment every week and the deadlines are strict. His exams don't always match the assigned questions so just do as many textbook examples as you can to prepare. He rounded my final mark up after I aced the exam.
He was a great prof overall, the made the midterms hard enough. He also made the practice easy for understand, but some of the time he will forget to tell you what formula you have to use.
He's just such a great guy always cracking jokes during lecture and keeps you awake, Goes through material at a reasonable rate and his midterm exams are super easy. Weekly assignment which consists of 5 textbook questions. Would definetaly take again if offered
