Very eccentric, but also extremely bright. His exams are freakin hard, but the rest of the his classes aren't. He's quite humourous.
A different type of proff. VERY intelligent and eccentric. Classes can be unpredictable. Far more helpful than most think. Dry witt, an excellent story teller if u can follow him. A character but a good man if you speak to him one on one.
Terrible professor. It is very hard to follow him and he tends to just follow the textbook. I don't recommend any courses taught by Evan Haley.
Way too cool. This guys knows his stuff. If you want the real deal, no BS, he'll give you the goods.

He has high expectations from his students. Or, he has low expectations, but still not easy tests. He makes himself available for extra help, and he works to make sure you understand the answers to the questions you ask.
Dr. Haley is very eccentric and at first hard to follow - but if you stick with it, attending his courses will be one of the most rewarding experiences in your University career. Show respect for him and he will do so for you - a truly brilliant man with an interesting sense of humour... Go Haley!
I think Dr. Haley is a really intelligent professor. The only thing i want to convey to you all is that he sounds and acts like william shatner in star trek. With short choppy bursts, you think he is going to yell out "spock!" or "Bones" any second! lol otherwise, great prof
I just dropped Haley's class, not because of the material, but because of Haley. It is simply stunning how inconsiderate and unclear Haley can be. I didn't know you could be that inept without trying.
love the vests and the bike. kind of an oddball. has trouble modulating the his pitch when he speaks, and sometimes it seems like he's trying to hold in a burp. otherwise, a fair marker with easy assignments/exams, and a brilliant man. i recommend him. entertaining (somewhat) and informative.

Because of Haley's refusal to put up overheads, the majority of class has given up on his incomprehensible lectures. My condolences to those who are required to take his course.
Very brilliant dude. He was looking especially frazzled today. I saw in in the library and was going to say hi, but he was on a mission and I didnt want to get run over. People might be angered by him because they actually have to be attentive and read the text. That last test was torture though
Haley is absolutely brilliant, and if you take the time to give him a chance his quirks become some of the best things about him. He wouldn't be teaching if he wasn't truly phenomenal. For those ignorant haters out there who negate his every move I consider it their loss. Hint: do your readings.
Seriously, it doesn't seem to matter if you do the readings - he still wants you to fail. I don't think that anyone can defend his lack of compassion and the fact that he repeats himself about 5 times before moving on. No matter how smart a man is those who can't teach shouldn't. And Haley can't.
You have to be on your toes to do well in his class. He's brilliant, knows his material, and if you try to feed him a load of crap he will totally call you on it. He is the superhero of the dept., and genuinely CARES about his students' well-being. He rocks!
This guy is horrible! He cannot lead a lecture, and is completely unwilling to help out the students. I do the readings over and over, yet I am still unable to understand what is going on. He is honestly the worst prof I have ever had!

Yes, Dr. Haley is definitely a genius. I still had a hard time in lecture. However, I like the assignment, quiz and midterm he gave us because they were fair.
I WILL NEVER TAKE ANOTHER CLASS WITH HALEY AGAIN. He has sudden volume changes, jumps around, is obsessive compulsive, rearranges his books and ultimately is very unnerving. I have no doubt that he is intelligent, but he stresses me out! SAVE YOURSELF THE STRESS!!!
He is very passionate about his work, and that is nice to see. Hard to follow most lectures because of his distractive jumpiness, but I was told that he gets nervous speaking in front of large groups, so perhaps that's why. Be sure to keep on top of your work because if you get behind...you will be VERY behind.

HORRIBLE PROFESSOR. AVOID PROFESSOR HALEY LIKE THE PLAGUE. Anyone who claims this guy is brilliant obviously didnt come to class very often, it was like hitting yourself in the head with a brick repeatedly. Haley has obsessive compulsive little quirks, like he moves the stuff on the podium around 600 million times in a lecture. DROP THIS CLASS.
Good prof, he knows what he's talking about. BUT AMAZINGLY BORING. There will be 20 minutes left on lecture and I'll manage to fall right asleep in front of him. Avoid him if you want to keep your passion about history, he'll bore the pants off you.

Admittedly, his lectures are tough to follow, but he does seem to know what he's talking about. His courses compliment the textbook very well to ease the burden of following the lectures, in his defense.
The man can't teach, nor speak and almost ran me over on his bike.
I had to leave lectures on a regular basis because I get annoyed by repetitive motions, which was bad because Haley once moved a pencil 67 times in one lecture before I had to leave. He was well-educated, and I'm sure he knows his stuff, but I had a difficult time concentrating and his frequent voice level change startled me a lot.

This man is a mess. His voice moves up and down like a yo yo as he delivers a completely incoherent "lecture". When he not on the verge of picking his nose he is nervously moving his pen around on the desk in front of him. He is a disgrace to Mcmaster University and it is truly a mystery as to how this man was ever allowed to lecture.
The worst prof/teacher I have had at any level of schooling. The class would not be particularly difficult if he knew how to lecture. Sadly he knows his stuff and clearly is well read, but is the WORST lecturer I have ever met. Routinely reads lectures from the text and talks as though he is on the verge of soiling himself.PLEASE AVOID AT ALL COSTS
I didn't even buy the text because it was like a million dollars, but it didn't matter cuz he always read to us directly from it. Boo-urns, man. What a bad trip.
I actually LIKED Dr. Haley. Yes, he can be quirky, but he doesn't leave one wanting for detail. He's honest, fair, and does seem to care about his students. He is very helpful if you see him after class to clarify anything that was confusing in lecture.
Mid-terms were fair. Exam had extremely difficult questions (requires you to know irrelevant details) outside the essay. Go to all your lectures and somehow force yourself to pay attention to his incomprohensible style. He's very intelligent he just can't teach well.
Basically, Haley is smart, but unapproachable, and is not a fun professor. He is virtually impossible to follow in lecture. His sentences never end and therefore, taking notes is very difficult. His tests are horrid. They ask ridiculous things such as the name of something you might read once in the textbook. His lectures are dull. Keep away.
Dr. Haley is quirky but he has a vast amount of knowledge that he seems to desperately want to share. If you listen carefully, his thoughts do connect coherently with the occasional frayed edge because he just doesn't have time to say EVERYTHING he knows. His tests are difficult, but fair. Attendance and readings are required to do well. Nice guy.
What an utterly terrible professor. How he got into teaching is beyond me.. he's horrible. His incoherent speaking patterns are abysmal, and are only matched by his boring montonone and hard tests. He doesn't use WEBCT or use anything but an oldschool overhead that is impossible to see; he's terrible for help and overall the worst Prof at Mac. RUN!
This guy is the most boring prof on earth. I went to class every morning and fell asleep. His sentences never end and he never makes any sense. He just jumps from one topic to another and never has any connections between topics. I was lucky that i already knew allot about the topic. If you know nothing about the material don't take his course

Great Prof, really loves what he teaches and it shows. If you can't get at least a B in his class, you probably don't belong in university. He tells you exactly (and I mean EXACTLY) what you need to know. Know it, write the tests, and you're in the clear. You might even learn something along the way. Why anyone wouldn't like his class is beyond me

He sometimes goes on tangents but he's extremely entertaining and very very nice. **how entertaining his class is depends on how close to the front you sit, get as close to him as you can**

It's clear that Haley knows what he's talking about and wants to share his knowledge with his students. Although it's easy to do well in his courses, you have to look out for irrelevant details since he cares more about obscure facts than key themes or concepts. He's also difficult to approach and frustrating at times.
I had this guy over 10 years ago and the comments are reflecting what I also experienced. This guy is smart as a tack, he knows the topics inside out, he is incredibly enthusiastic but he goes all over the place, he's a little like a squirrel crossing the road. I loved the information I got, but his lessons don't flow in a logical manner.
Possibly the worst history prof. I have had. Incomprehensible lectures, followed by evaluations that are based upon obscure facts from readings and lectures. He also brings roles of toilet paper into class to blow his nose with, I guess that is a teaching aid, either that or he wants to be repulsive to his class on an academic and social level.

Although he is very knowledgeable and funny, his lectures are essentially him reading and not explaining. He goes off on little tangents that make writing coherent notes nearly impossible. He also doesn't respond to e-mails, which is rather annoying. He could be a great professor, but he isn't right now.
Haley is an excellent professor. For the student who wants to learn he is more than willing to help and I never had a problem meeting with him to ask questions or to clarify a topic he had discussed in lecture. He is a serious academic and its too bad that students today aren't more concerned about learning than being entertained.
Worst prof i've had to date.. could not understand a word he said. Tended to backtrack and re-state things he already went over in 'Latin' - almost seemed like I should have taken Latin as a prerequisite.
Attended every lecture, completed all the readings, took extensive notes, and almost failed his midterm. Memorize useless, minor facts and dates and you might have a chance. Attending lectures is pointless. Stay home and memorize the textbook instead. Very intelligent, but should not be a professor.
He is a very knowledgeable professor, but he is extremely disorganized and can't process his thoughts clearly enough for his lectures to make any sense. He goes on tangents, and makes annoying and unnecessary noises during the lectures which lead to frustration. For those reasons it is next to impossible to take meaningful notes from lectures.
I'm impressed with his knowledge and passion for academics, but I think he forgets that many of us lowly undergrads have no background in Greek or Latin and limited prior knowledge. The overheads don't help much so I'm forced to take notes phonetically and try to look up the terms later (and the tests make this necessary). Hope you can write fast.
DROP HIS CLASS NOW. Not only is he a terrible professor, he is an unkind man. Since he teaches classics, he should be familiar with Julius Caesar syndrome. The superiority complex this man has seriously inhibits his ability to do his duty as a professor. Seriously. Run. Now. Faster.
Worst prof I have ever had. His lectures are almost impossible to follow, he's rude to students (although most deserve it). He can't keep his thoughts straight and gives tons of unnecessary info. He takes 10-20 minutes to answer some of the most basic questions just because he goes off on tangents. Seems to resent that students don't like him.
The best prof I have ever had. If you have an interest in ancient Greece and Rome this prf really knows everything about the topics. He may eccentric bt he's interesting and very knowledgeable. Thank you Dr. Haley.
Dr. Haley was a great prof to have, and he is one that I recommend having. He does talk quickly, and he can be rather eccentric, but he's also very knowledgeable and easy to approach. His tests and exams cover only the material that he has given in class and through readings.
Dr. Haley is an example of what I often refer to as an "old school" prof. This man is incredibly knowledgeable about his field and will give students an intricate look into the respective subject. Being said, sporadic episodes of blatant rudeness to students and humourous anecdotes make him an acquired taste
Dr. Haley is a very intelligent man and is a decent professor. He is bad for responding to emails and goes off on hilarious tangents sometimes. A bit quirky, but his tests are rather fair and I did very well in his classes. Not the best prof at Mac by any means, but provides some entertainment value as well as decent clarity in lecture.

Dr. Haley is the last bastion of American freedom! He is the man! His lectures usually go over time, but the tangents in which he digresses are absolutely hilarious. You have to read the text and go to class, but a good grade is very attainable. Keep doing you, Haley!
