Dr. Houston is my favorite teacher! Definitely take him for a class.
good guy, do the homework and you'll be fine
Goes too fast. Tests are H A R D!!! Only does problems, in an unclear manner.
Class is very difficult, sometimes example problems are unclear.
very clear, helpful, and fun in class... definitely learned a lot
very clear. reasonable homework, do it and go to class! hard tests though
good teacher but test are very hard
No Comments
sort of good teacher, material was hard,i was unprepared for tests, modern alg=***
teaches with enthusism, but study hard for test
Presents the material well in class but the tests are often harder than any of the problems you've worked
best teacher i've ever had. teaches very clearly, but bit clumsy. no one can be better than him. just take him and you'll learn a lot.
I didn't like this class. The teacher was very hard and not too helpful. When you do go see him for help, he acts like you should know the material.
Class was kind of tough, but that isnt his fault, it is calculus II after all, teaches well
Dr. Houston is funny, he teaches well...but watch out for attendence and quizes...they will get you!
Assigns homework...and doesn't teach the chapter until the next class. Tests are VERY hard and doesn't have anything to do with the hw or Quizzes!! I would recommend a different teacher!!
Great, easy to get along with.
I thought he taught very well i made B in the class. If you do the homework then u will do good in the class. He assigns alot of problems but do all of them you will be happy in the end
Pretty cool teacher, pretty easy, with a great sense of humor.

For the material he is great! just ask a question when u dont get it. hes good about giving the easy way to do it and allowing u to use it on tests. do the hw! quizzes every week, but it helps with the grade!
Great teacher... very good at explaining. Just go to class & dont worry about the homework (he's that good)
I've had worse.
Easy to understand, since he is one of the only english speaking professors in the math department. However, he isn't very helpful if you ask him questions outside of class. Test are somewhat difficult, but other people have made A's in that class.
I am just so-so in math and I got a B.
covers alot of material very fast, assigns h.w. then goes over it next class with out teaching...can be very fustrating..doesn't collect h.w...but does have weekly quizes...my advice do the hw
Very easy.. all you got to do is do the hw.. quizzes and tests are simple!!
I thought that he made calculus as easy as you can. i'm a visual learner and i thought that he was one of the best math teachers that i've had. math is my strong point but i think that he is a good teacher to take.
Mr. Houston is the best calculus teacher! I highly recommend him! Just make sure you do the homework!
He is an awesome calculus teacher! He makes everything easy to understand and has the patience to repeat himself until everybody understands. No attendance, but you'll want to go. He makes time for you if you need help and genuinely cares about his students. I just feel bad when nobody laughs at his jokes... I think they're funny!
Great teacher and a nice personality. Recommended.
If you dont now the limit, you will be taken out and shot!!! (Just kidding Mr./Dr. Houston) Hands down the best math instructor ive ever had. Took 1120 in the summer and dropped the first week. Im taking it now, and it is the easiest class im in! (By the way, I suck at math!)
I thought that Dr. Houston has been one of the best math teachers that I have ever had. I have always been about average at math and he makes calc. seem easy. If you do your homework(which is not turned in) you will understand and ask questions if you dont. I recommend this teacher!
Houston is one of the better calc professors in campus. But he will not give you a free ride....you will haxe to work hard for your grade.
He definitely makes you work for your grade but he is really funny. Had 3 tests, 10 quizzes, and a final that was comprehensive.
He is a very sweet old man. His sense of humor was always on point. Very straightforward just do your homework and you will be fine.
Dr. Houston is one the best professors I've had yet, he presents information in an easy to understand manner, and is generally pretty funny (even if people don't laugh at his jokes). His tests are pretty much as easy as they can possibly be while covering the material (like one easy problem of each type). Great Professor! The class flys by.
gives study guide for test and goes over as many problems from it as you want.
An interesting course. Dr. Houston chose to make the course a hybrid of lectures and problem solving by the students. I think this approach worked very well for the majority of the class. The only ones who suffered were those who didn't do the easy homework assignments. The tests were easy if you stayed on top of the homework. Recommended.
My math abilities are way low but i passed this class with a B. I earned the grade, I wasnt given the grade. Good teacher.
I survived Calculus with a B, thanks to him. He's a great instructor and I learned a great deal from his lectures.
probably the best math teacher I've ever had. Explains everything very clearly and logically so you see where everything is going. His quizzes are 4 problems - there are a lot of quizzes but it makes you attend class and paying attentino is really all you need to do to pass. If you do the hw semi-regularly , you should walk away with at least a B
This is a wonderful professor. Do the homework and you will ace the quizzes. He makes this course so easy to understand. Quizzes and tests are made of the basic problems in the sections that you are studying. He realizes that we are not all rocket scientists! Wonderful sense of humor!
His class was HARD. I ended up failing it and took it again over the summer with a different professor and made an A. His tests are what kill you. They are very hard, and you have a quiz every week. Take a different professor if you can!!
The best math teacher I have ever taken. He teaches in a way that makes it understandable & easy to remember. I made a C in Pre-Cal in high school and made an A in his class. Make sure you do the reviews before the tests...if you pay attention you will actually learn and remember how to do the problems.
I came to class most of the time (90%). I also studied the text, homework, and pre-test. Failed every test that was given, also most of the quizes. The quality of time i spent working on assignments never showed on my test/quizzes. I do not recommend taking this teacher, please choose someone else, like Burnap. I was totally mislead from others her
You definitely have to work for your grade. This is a tough course, but Dr. Houston is an A+ professor. He took difficult material and made it easy to understand.
This is a great professor. His teaching makes the course material easy to understand. Keep up with the homework and you will not need to study too hard for the tests and quizzes.
Count yourself lucky to have Houston as your professor. I've had him for several courses here at UNCC. He is very clear and up front about his expectations of you. Course content was challenging, but tests were fair, and in fact quite straightforward for those who studied. He will give you a "practical" view of math that you'll use for years.
He is a great professor! He spends about 30 minutes every class period going over homework from the night before and is willing to spend more time if needed. Quizzes are given every class period over last classes material and focus on basic principles. DEFINITELY a teacher you want to take. Always willing to help and truly loves what he does :-)
I liked Dr. Houston. He was a great professor, but his class was a little tough. Go to class--he gives quizzes every day that will DEF. help your grade! Do the homework...it helps a lot too. His final exam is what determined my grade so focus a lot on the final!
Prof. Houston is amazing. Material is tough, but he explains it very well. Attendance isn't mandatory but there are quizzes every other class. Hmwk is optional but can help. He goes over it the next class. I've done 1 homework assignment and have an A b/c he explains it so well. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!
He does not explain or goes over the material of the course. I was teaching myself
very good teacher
Excellent - I don't like Math but this class was a joy. Very good material coverage and depth!
He doesn't go over the material in a clear, organized manner. I was pretty much teaching myself from the book. Attendence isn't mandatory but important if you want to ask questions about the homework. Homework is key because there are quizes pretty much every week based off it. Tests are pretty straightforward.
Very good math teacher. Explains and does many examples to help you understand.
GREAT TEACHER! i was soo amazed with how much i learned. i really am NOT a math person, but i understood everything! hes great! take him if you cann!
Very difficult class. The * class you must select from the list for a B.S. really separates the men from the boys. Dr. Houston demands you take the class seriously. I think he expects you to know a little too much though. The problem with that is this class is cross-listed as a graduate course.
I recomend NOT taking this teacher i sat in the very front man he is one of the hardest teachers i have ever taken! Come after class (no time for him) he expects u to know it......tough tough!!
Dr. Houston is a very good professor, I just finished my Business Calculus with him.He is very helpful for students. He works the problems as much as you will need to understand the subject. I would highly recommended him.
He is a terrible teacher! He rambles on and on about useless things and we never actually get to what we need to know. The tests are ridiculous, they only have 16 questions or so and they are so much harder than any study guide problems. Unless you have a pretty good understanding of math.. dont take his class...
This guy is easy. He has quizzes that he tells you about but they are easy. I never study for the quizzes/tests and made A's. If you pay attention in class, you'll be fine. The test are exactly the same as his examples. The book was only helpful if you did the homework, which I never did. He goes over questions on the hmwk and has a study guide.
open ended math questions. not very personable. ok class
Great teacher, explains everything very well. Quizzes once a week, if you do your homework and/or pay attention in class easy A. Tests are basically just like the study guides. Would highly recommend this teacher!
super easyyy. take him.
Good professor. Kept my attention the entire semester (I never missed a class.) Exams require a fair amount of studying - they aren't multiple choice (neither are the weekly quizzes.) This class with Houston helped me a lot with Managerial Econ. I was able to remember everything.
BEST TEACHER IV HAD IN COLLEGE. iv never taken a class with "Calculus" in its title. he shows you every step. he gives hw for help(not graded) which he goes over in class, but quiz once a week with like 4 easy questions that you would learn from hw. i never did the hw, just listened to him go over it and got As on quizzes. and tests are easy.
Very hard to understand at times, when explaining problems. I have learned more from my tutor than the actual professor himself. He definitely left a sour taste for me in mathematics, especially since I love it so much. Highly recommend that students look for another professor for Calculus.
hard. gives random attendance quizzes. moves quickly and assumes you understand everything. tests are short and multiple choice but it still seems impossible :(
One of my favorite teachers so far. I would highly recommend him. I actually got a D the first time I took him, but all you need to do is actually complete the 'optional' hw and show up for all class lectures. I got an A the 2nd time when I wasn't so lax. Calc. is hard, this guy makes it as easy as possible, but you have to work a little.
Professor Houston was one of the best professors I've had so far in college, he's very helpful and is very easy. I took Calc in high school and nearly failed but then I took his class and everything he teaches he goes back over it explains it very well. I've made 100's on everything so far. Be sure to take him for Business Calc!
Excellent professor. He has a great sense of humor and makes going to class enjoyable. Pay attention and you will be fine.
Great teacher, very clear. Tests and quizzes are really easy if you do the home work. homework problems are more difficult than tests so if you can do them you are good to go.
Nice man, but I would not recommend him as a teacher. Speaks quietly in a large classroom, very hard to hear. Very unclear in the way he teaches. I somehow managed to pass with a C. Challenging material. Homework usually comes from textbook, not required to do it. 10 Tests I believe.. many quizzes.. attendance quizzes given on Mon & reg quiz on Wed
Houston is great teacher! He made calc so much easier than other professors. He used the chalkboard so everyone could see and so he wouldn't go too fast. I ad no trouble hearing him. There are quizzes every other class. When you don't have a real quiz, you have an attendance quiz, which is just 1 or 2 questions that you work on with classmates.
All his class focuses around is the Quizzes and tests. He assigns homework, but you do not have to do it. He explains well, but if you do not understand it try doing the homework. Study old quizzes to prepare for the exams.
Terrific professor! He moves at a really smart pace. It's not too fast or too slow. There is a quiz and attendance problem every week. Tests are not multiple choice, but are not insanely difficult as he explains the material really well. He usually curves the tests by a few points too.
tells awful jokes during class that he thinks are funny! You have quizzes every week and three test throughout the semester! All open ended questions. If you have to take his class... dont! wait another semester to take it!
Houston is fantastic! He tells jokes all class and the jokes actually help me learn/remember the content better. The homework is harder than the tests, but the tests are SUPER easy. As long as you pay attention and show up, his class is an easy and fun A.
Dr. Houston is exactly the kind of professor you want for a course such as MATH 4163; funny, nice, smart, and highly intelligent. He's respectable and friendly, also extremely funny. Course is challenging of course by its nature, but he gives reasonable and doable homeworks and tests. Would take again.
Dr. Houston is engaging, funny and very intelligent. He also explains things clearly and at an unhurried pace. Unless you are a genius, you will probably have to try hard in his classes. A's do not come for free. But that is part of the fun.
He is a sweet guy. He cracks jokes on tries his best to make learning as enjoyable as possible. I don't really pay attention in class. Just study the day before the tests by watching YouTube videos and you should be fine. Sitting at a 95 and I use my laptop all of class. Homework due online every day you have class, just use Mathway.
Couldn't see anything he wrote on the board and neither could the rest of the class. First used chalkboard then projector but the glare from the lights washed it all out. Could never follow his work. Quizzes every 1-2 weeks homework due every class. Gives extra credit for attendance. Sometimes sits us alphabetically for exams. Would not recommend.
There is online homework due before every class. He is a nice guy and cracks jokes in class trying to make it a little more fun. The tests are not that hard if you know what you're doing in class. Does not allow calculators on the final exam, but lets you use them all throughout the semester. "Attendance quizzes" are your extra credit
Not a good professor in my opinion. Was unclear in his methods of teaching and was rude when you asked questions. His tests aren't hard but his quizzes are and the homework is always on the lesson you're going over that day so you don't know how to do it. Also, he doesn't let you use a calculator on the final when he let you use one all year.
Lots of WA and attendance quizzes, but he's pretty hilarious
Be prepared to teach yourself out of the text book. Only goes over the lessons once. Plenty of homework, but it is not mandatory nor helpful. Try your best and you might pass. Professor hisself is very nice and humorous. Has an odd way of explaining things. Gives extra credit for attendance.
Such a good professor, if majority of the class doesn't do well on a test/quiz he will do a retest and also grades stuff in the students favor. Does do mandatory attendance quizzes but only can help you by giving you up to 3 extra points on your final grade. Homework isn't mandatory, but suggested to do it. Teaches course very well and funny man
sweet old man but awful professor, probably the worst teacher I have ever had... he does his best to boost grades for the class and gives extra credit for attendance, his hand writing and notes are horrible and unorganized would not recommend
A nice old man, that has years of experience with calc. The lectures are super boring so make sure you come to class wide awake. However he does care about students success and will answer any questions in class.
An outright amazing professor. I have absolutely no idea what linear algebra is, but my man has managed to get give me an A in the class and the majority of the class is based off of exams. Evan Houston is the funniest teacher I've ever had and he makes a boring class/subject entertaining.
Nice man but the way he teaches is very annoying. Linear Algebra is already hard enough without the professor jumping from topic to topic like he has ADD then messing up after you've written and listened to everything so now you erase all the incorrect information he just gave. Doesn't really explain many things. Just talks at you.
Attendance is not mandatory and its extra credit, but I would recommend going because his lectures are much more helpful than self-learning. There's a lot of homework but is helpful and the tests are topics that were all covered in lectures, textbooks, and study guides. He does care about student's success and will answer any questions in class.
LOVE this man. Wants all of his students to pass, he will give you extra point on quizzes and tests just to boost everyones grades. Attendance isn't mandatory but extra credit for extra points on your final grade if you only miss a few classes. Teaches well and two homework assignments a week. Study guides/homework prepare you for exams.
Dr. Houston was a great Linear Algebra professor. He made a class that is often extremely dry fun. There is homework due on MyLab before every class, but nothing unreasonable. His tests are much easier than the homework and almost directly follow the study guides he provides. However, classes are very theory-heavy and lack practical examples
Exams are pretty much exactly like the study guides. For each of the normal exams just review your notes, but mostly the study guides. For the final review all of your exams and study guides and you'll be fine.
Best math teacher I ever had. I wish he could have taught all of my math courses. He explains things thoroughly. His pace isn't too fast or too slow. And he adds a touch of humor to lectures. Also his voice is very calm and soothing. He make himself accessible outside of class. Only con is that he doesn't give great feedback online. go to office hr
honestly a good professor and a good person. just do the work and communicate with him and hell be super helpful. hes super chill and willing to help if you ask. among the best professors out there!
This class material was challenging. Professor Houston has a decent sense of humor, but the lectures can be difficult to follow. There is a good amount of hw and you can redo problems, but it doesn't count enough towards your grade to make a big impact. Quizzes and exams are difficult and have free-response questions that aren't always clear.
Test are alright, make up most of your grade. Go to class and pay attention to test review and HW and you will be fine. Decent sense of humor, comes off as "snobby" when asked questions though like you should know the material completely. Only thing I didnt like about him
The class itself is pretty easy, and he explains things super thoroughly. The homework is usually easy but the tests you should definitely study for--especially the theorems. He gives random questions for attendance problems sometimes but doesn't take attendance. If you miss a day, he's very good at helping you catch up.
This man is amazing. Idk why he isn't rated higher. His lectures are incredibly helpful and straight up entertaining. He made a 10 am calculus class borderline enjoyable. The class did bad on a test so he just let us retake it, and my grade on it went from a 78 to a 94. I even completely missed a quiz and he just replaced it with my final grade.
Dr. Houston is amazing. He's so sweet and funny and truly cares for his students. Make sure to read the canvas page to know when quizzes and tests are because he won't announce them in class. But he gives a lot of leeway with missed assignments. He always says to read the textbook, but if you go to class you won't need to. GO TO CLASS IT WILL HELP.
Do not take!!! Enroll yourself into online math courses or you will end up working at the national airports.
Test heavy class, the lectures are theory heavy and he doesnt do a great job at explaining or providing enough examples. I learned nothing from going to class and had to go to tutors/teach myself to understand anything
Good professor, his lecture are hard to follow along in class but as long as you do your homework you should be fine. He does do a lot of quizzes but they are based from homework. He gives freebies meaning extra free credits on some quizzes and two of my test so far which is nice. He does take attendance but not on certain days such as career fair.
Mr. Houston is a super nice guy, but honestly not so great at explaining the material. I did well by teaching myself through hw and online videos, which works bc its not a super hard class. He does drop questions for tests and does extra credit for attendance which will save your grade.
Lectures were sometimes hard to follow along with without reading from the textbook first so if you want to understand read before coming to class. The homework was usually harder to do than the quizzes and test. I liked how he gave test review questions with answers to help us for upcoming exams. Pretty good prof would take again given the chance!
For modern algebra, you absolutely need to do his optional homework and study before and after class. The material is very difficult, but he's a great instructor and is very engaging and funny. Tests are 35%, final is 50%, collected homework is 15%. Don't try to memorize proofs - understand why they work and you'll do better.
Did a great job during lectures explaining concepts and was very helpful during office hours. Tests are very similar to quizzes he gives you throughout the semester. Attendance not required but I definitely recommend it if you are struggling and there is a grade boost if you don't have too many absences.
He's just ok. Everything is pretty lecture heavy and there are no recordings so if you're behind and don't take notes you're screwed. Lots of quizzes but they're not too bad. Class is test heavy and the way he teaches is actually pretty confusing. Good thing is he does do attendance extra credit and might drop a low quiz grade. Teach yourself.
Prof. Houston is a sweet old (respectfully) man, but his lectures are a little confusing. Often times I had to teach myself out of class to understand topics. He uses a chalkboard for lectures, so sit up front if you have poor eyesight. The final was worth 30% of our grade, and was mostly multiple choice. The other exams are open ended.
Lecture heavy course professor is hard to understand, does not speak very clear or explain concepts well. He uses a chalkboard to teach and his handwriting is often not legible. The material itself is not very difficult and he does provide extra credit if you have no absences. He seems like a nice guy just becoming too old and not a great speaker.
Professor Houston's MATH2164 class is tough, but engaging if you put in the work. The lectures can be tricky, so using unstuck AI alongside the textbook helped me stay on top of the material. Solid course overall, with fair tests and a helpful professor.
Your going to have to teach yourself everything in this class. Gives a ton of homework. Study guides for Test do not match the test that well at all. Barely gives partial credit and Test are about 10 questions sometimes all questions are multiple choice which means no partial credit for problems that require a ton of work. Do not take him.
Dr. Houston is an excellent expositor of mathematics. It's thanks to him and this class that I actually understand linear algebra on a deeper level. lecture notes are available every day and if you keep up and try to work ahead you'll do fine on the tests. It's not an easy class but Dr. Houston makes it much more manageable and fun.
So much homework (which felt rushed), and so much learning is dependent on his lectures and reading heaps of the textbook. He is kind and the course is very structured, however some of the content is really hard to grab a hold of. His lectures are sometimes inconsistent, he will get his own examples wrong or teach something the wrong way at times.
Dr. Huston's lectures comprised mostly of writing and explaining concepts and examples on the whiteboard so I would recommend hand writing what is on the board and some of what is said as explanation. Everything is done on paper including attendance, mostly problems related to that days lecture, and tests/quizzes. There is homework due before class
Dr. Houstons linear algebra class is hard but it is organized well. The lectures can be somewhat helpful and he does attendance daily. If you stay on top of the homeworks, rework them before quizzes, and study the test reviews given before each test and get to the concept dont just memorize you should do fine. Dr. Houston is kind and respectful.
Dr. Houston is a nice guy but he's not good at teaching. His lectures are hard to follow Homework and Test reviews differ significantly from the actual Tests. I emailed him regarding concern of grades and he didn't respond. I later talked to him in person only for him to say "I don't know what to say to that" Take this class with Loc Nguyen instead
