he knows his stuff, that's what I like about him. He gives u the chance 2 do well so if u don't, it's your loss!!

great professor. interesting lectures. good teaching style. very good overall
He is horribly mean and awful
i don't like in-class hissy fits. if you want people to participate then fricking ASK them. don't get all snippy in the middle of a lecture because people are not raising their hands!
Read the cases and come to class with something to add, but be prepared to be the focus of his attention for 5-10mins. Overall a very helpful professor.
teaches law the way its in law school, very effective
Mandery Rocks! He is very helpful and fair. His class is not easy, but it is very informative, and prepares you for law school. Mandery for President!

To tell u the truth, this class is very challenging. Lots of reading and writing, however, it prepares you if you want to go to law school. Professor Mandery is very intelligent, shows interest when he is teaching and help those who want to be helped.
My My Harvard's worst professor....
mandery is not easy but its worth it, he prepares you and makes the class interesting. the only thing is do the readings and participate cuz otherwise he gets into a tiff... hes got a cute nerdy appeal to him, real good professor
he's a good teacher, and the only reason he probably ever gets hissy fits is because there are so many stupid kids at john jay. it's very frustrating for me, no doubt it's frustrating so someone who went to harvard. the material is challenging and interesting, and prof. mandery is charming!
i have a strange attraction to him.
This is truly the Lune that John Jay has to offer. The worst professor in history of John Jay. He's very unpredictable, childish.
He looks like Chris O'Donnell!
Charming and attractive? This guy is a ticking time bomb waiting to explode. That's not charming or attractive.
The worst I've ever had so far. He is unpredictable, childish, and self-centered. If you ask for help, he will find a worst excuse not to help you.
Easy if you just do the readings and use some common sense. Has a strange sense of humor, and I learned a lot in his class. As long as you show some thought & intelligence, and are in this school to learn, not to just get by, he's great.
This is a very interesting class and you will learn a lot but it is a lot of work. He teaches it like a law class and his tests are very difficult but gives extra credit. Keeps your attention - you won't ever get bored.
take him if you want to see a more balanced examination of the death penalty debates.
His sense of humor is like his teaching, in dire need of help. Thank yourself if you haven't taken this course yet.
he is still learning how to get laughs, but i'd say that his material can be very confusing and difficult to understand at times. the essays are not that difficult but you have to read the given readings to pass the quizzes and know your the work to pass the final exam. if you are and intellectual p
Prof Mandery even though he givess a lot of work, is actually a nice guy. The only hot professor I have seen on John Jay campus so far. If you are lazy, please do not attempt his class because you would be stressed like you never did in your life before.
It don't know how his teaches is in other courses but when I had him for law & evid. he was great.Easy material that was certainly worth my time and $$.He was helpfull when you needed it, and expects you to participate in class conversations. Overall he was a great prof., made me fall in love w/ law

This class is ok.U must do the readings in order to pass quizes and also to be used in essays. He has a weird sense of humor, but u'll figure it out.Just make sure at least do some of the readings-if nobody does them he gets mad. This class is not for the Lazy. There is alot of reading!
Cool dude. Those who know him remember the humor...and the tantrums.
Class was Ok.Still just like for PHI 291,this class is not for the overally lazy. This class was better than PHI 291 that i had last semester tho.We had a mock trial in which some parts were fun.The 2 cases that he chose were really stupid-Roswell & landing on the moon.Class was ok.It was somewhat fun the past 2 semesters:PHI 291 & LAW 202. :-D
I must admit that he is probably a very smart prof, but when you add it with the outburst, mood swings, and bad jokes...need i say more?
This professor is different. You want to go to law school? Get a laugh? Get put down hard? Take him!
He is really smart, but can be cocky and moody at times. If you can get past his mood swings, he is a really nice guy, helpful professor, and will do anything for the students he has developed strong relationships with.
He is teachs nothing, do not take any of his courses, He just makes stupid jokes. Worst ever seen at JJAY
Mandery is a good teacher. He works with the students well and makes every effort to see them do as well as they possibly can.

Brilliant professor. Chsllenges our minds, forces us to think. Tests can be too long. Often keeps us past class time. Always available befoe class and after. TAKE HIM
Class challenges you and makes you think. Assigns too much readings though. If you don't like to work, don't take the class. Really wants the best for students. Class discussions are interesting but sometimes he tries a little too hard to bond with the students. You'll get something in the end from the class, if u stick with it.
For those taking his PHI class, take my advice, this man plays favoritism and if you argue against ANY of his views, he will personally hold a grudge against u and that will reflect on your graded exams and your final grade.Although he supposedly graduated from Harvard/Harvard Law, he is very unprofessional and immature when it comes to work BadProf
I agree with the comment under mine the first day of class he said he doesn't care of your views as long as you include a philosopher's argument the truth is, he really DOES hold a grudge against people who oppose his views, and 90% of every lecture was solely based on personal views. he discourages people who use philosophers' point of views
One of the best caring, passionate, knowledgeable and challenging professors I have ever had. I don’t understand why people going to colleges complain about readings or being challenged. Even if he does have favorites, he favors those who care about education and work hard. As a professor, you would probably do the same.
He is a good professor. The people who talk against him are probably the lazy ones that were in his class. The fact that John Jay isn't an Ivy LEague school doesn't mean that we have to be slackers- and that is what Professor Mandery's opinion of his class is. GREAT TEACHER...take him for your own good!! especially if you want to go to Law School.
Im gunna make this in response to all the comments below mine and be completely objective: If you want to be entertained and have an education at the same time at the expense of your grade, take him. if u want a grade you deserve and are already in his class, dont say anything thatll piss him off or go against him. personally i recommend P.Brugnola
the logic of the class: its supposed to be a philosophy class and he "wants" it but yet he structures the class like its a creative thinking class in which he points out his own views towards every topic which is NOT what a prof should do if u ask him a question during his office he wont answer it Y do these ppl call themselves "Professors"?

He is very interesting. He does have mood swings,so u have to watch out for that. And he does sway off of the subject often by telling a few corny jokes,no offense intended, but he's very knowledgable in what he teaches. He's always presenting these real life dilemnas for us to think about.Grading is fair. Needs to give everyone same attention.
The best professor I have ever had since I've been at John Jay. If you are ready for a challenge take this class! You'll come away with the feeling that you've been equipped with skills for life. Prof Mandery is funny, very fair and really seems concerned about his students. Thank you for being such a great professor.
He doesn't hold grudges against anyone. There is a lot of work for the courses, but even is this is CUNY, it's still college. Professor Mandery is extremely intelligent and professional, as well as funny. I recommend him to anyone who wants to take an interesting class, while still having to earn your grade, and having fun as well.
He has been one of the most challenging professors I have had at John Jay. He expects all of his students to receive the same education as they would anywhere else. He has taught me skills that will prove invaluable to me when I attend law school.
absolute 0 analysis of texts. just stuff based on his own experiences/thoughts of them. at times it feels like he imposes them on you. but other than that great guy and easy grader
Bright guy, but does not tolerate alternative points of view. Blatantly picks favorites, and your grade will mostly be based upon whether he likes you. Storms out of the room when he gets upset, very unprofessional. Once, he cried. Certainly knows his material, but if you want a good grade, make sure you always agree with him! Very immature
I don't know, who gave him this job. He is totally unqualified for teaching.

I USUALLY GET As BUT B/C OF HIM MY GPA LOWERED ALOT! hard to get the concepts bc he teaches as if we are in Harvard!. I TRULLY TRULLY DONT RECOMMEND HIM IF U CAN HELP IT!!!!!! LISTEN TO ME..
I really don't understand the negative ratings here. If you do the work, you'll be fine. The only time in two semesters I have seen him get angry was when people either didn't do the readings, or acted like they were in second grade rather than in a two hundred level class
The teacher's if pretty cool. He makes the class interesting but the material can be really hard to understand! You MUST MUST MUST do the reading. It helps a lot to highlight what you read so you can understand it and remember it. There's a quiz on the reading every week. Do the reading!! And redo your papers EVERY chance you get.. you'll be fine..
I found Professor Mandery to be challenging, yet very invested in helping students. His classes are thought provoking and will make you question your opinions. He does assign a lot of work and expects critical analysis, but it is worth it in the end. I'd recommend him to anyone who is up for a lively debate.
Amazing professor and all-around great guy. Unlike most John Jay profs, he's challenging and thoughtful--DEAL WITH IT.
He is a great professor and is very knowledgeable. You will not regret taking his class
Understand this: Prof Mandery has a good personality; he seems quite down to earth. HOWEVER, he is extremely tough when it comes to grading. He teaches philosophy as if it is definite. Does not encourage students to think outside the box, and to me that's the opposite of what philosophy is. He is not qualified for phi. And I'm majoring in it.
Prof. Mandery is one of the best at John Jay. He is invested in his students and wants us all to excel. Class is very interesting, as he pushes us to think critically and objectively about world issues. PHI may not be his background, but this professor makes you really explore PHI in terms of making it applicable to our own world.
I've completely misjudged Prof Mandery. As an educator, he goes above and beyond to make sure his students are able to understand the course work, and utilize the concepts in everyday life. When speaking to him on a personal level, individually, his compassion for his students surpass most educators. Incredible mentor. Passionate. Supportive.
Prof. Mandery does not tolerate laziness. He will not give you a good grade because your an "honors student". He wants all of his students to get the most out of their education and work for their grades. He drastically improved my writing. If you care about your work, you'll love him. Overall, he's awesome and I'm going to take his class again!
This class was SO HARD but worth it. I learned a lot. It's ultimately a philosophy course so LOADS of reading. He's a tough professor and is not easily impressed. Very funny guy. It was such a difficult class. On the first day he says he barely gives As and he means it.
I've gotten an A- in his 201 Course. If you see him and you can take the same class by an easier professor do it. It's not worth the stress. If you have no choice, read and make outlines of the readings. Recommended: get a group and split them up and make outlines to study for the quizes. Re-do your essays again and again until you get an A.
Get ready to read two books, one is a thick textbook (he made us read about 16-17 chapters), then another book about 400 pages. Class grade is broken down by weekly quizzes (short answer response format) (20%), MIDTERM (20%), LIT REVIEW (20%), AND FINAL (40%). Really tough grader. It took everything in me to get an A. BE PREPARED TO WORK.
HON 301 For good luck, I brought a Jesus toy with me for his "Wild Justice" book quiz. That's how hard it was for me.
He's a great professor and person. Really knowledgeable and respected. However, this is a tough class. he expect greatness but at the end he grades you on how well you've improved and tried through out the course. Go to his office hours he is an awesome person to talk to. He gives quizzes every class. a midterm, test and research proposal included
Take him, you won't regret it. He expects a lot, but it is extremely helpful and cares for his students
Professor Mandery is one of the best professors Ive taken at John Jay. As a person, he is extremely respectful, caring, and considerate. Hes a tough grader, but thats because he knows his students and expects a lot. Prof. Mandery goes out of his way to help. As long youre not trying to get a free pass out of the class, youll do well.
Prof. Mandery expects effort from his students and gives constructive feedback. We had to do the readings, go to class, write papers, and take quizzes, just like any class. His lectures are interesting and really make you think, rather than just reading off slides. He is friendly and respectful as a person and really cares about you.
Professor Mandery is one of the best professors Ive had at John Jay. He is so caring and kind and he really wants to see his students succeed. His classes are very interesting, and you really learn a lot about the subject and just life in general. I highly suggest taking his class
Prof. Mandery is an amazing person, Professor and mentor. He builds meaningful relationships with his students and is extremely humble and down to earth. This was a capstone class and prof. Mandery made the whole process enjoyable while also keeping the class on track. He cares about your academics, future, and your life in general.
He is dedicated to improving the education quality of his students. He will make you work for the grade because he knows that you are capable. I recommend him to anyone looking to go to grad school. If you are interested in law or ethics, he's the professor to take.
Hands down one of the best professors I have ever had. Professor Mandery not only cares about how well you do in his class but also in your career path as well. You will not find another professor as interested in your future as Professor Mandery.
Simply the best professor I have ever had. Gives amazing feedback and is most importantly consistent with his feedback. Professor Mandery excels at being a great professor, mentor and friend. He will push you to what he believes your threshold is. Cannot recommend this professor enough, if you have the chance to take his class take it.
Don't take it if you want to lower your GPA. Pop quiz and exam is harder than any course I've taken before. RUN !!!!
heard good things so i joined halfway through the class; must say he lived up to most of the hype. class was kinda unstructured but you learn a lot from having a professor like him. if you care about the type of person you'll grow to be, he'll challenge you to be a marginally better version of yourself. he's strange but overall a good dude.
Taking this class was such a rewarding experience. Evan is always engaging and so smart, so it's really exciting to learn from him, especially because he is so passionate. He goes above and beyond to make students feel supported and he is one of the most caring people I've met. The work is challenging, but Evan is encouraging and willing to help.
Prof. Mandery is a great teacher & mentor. He definitely cares for his students & will make the time to give advice, and go over readings & his feedback on papers (unlimited rewrites to bring up your grade). If you want a challenge that will better you as a student and overall person, take Mandery. Thanks to him, I feel more confident academically.
I struggled with this course so much but I communicated this with professor Mandery plenty of times and he made sure I was grasping all the materials and the concept of the class. If you put in the work Evan WILL take that into account. He is very patient and caring to those that ACTUALLY want to succeed and show him that you are trying. The best.
Professor Mandery is dedicated to his students. He shows his care uniquely by pushing his students to write better and think critically about pressing social justice issues. Few other professors will engage with their students in meaningful conversations inside and outside of class or offer unlimited paper rewrites, but he will. Highly recommend!
Taking HON 201 with Evan Mandery was probably the best thing I have done at John Jay. He will push you in the ways that you need to be pushed if you actually want to be a good writer and achieve success in whatever you choose to pursue. He is so flexible on deadlines and you can rewrite your papers until you earn the grade you are satisfied with.
Professor Mandery is one of the top professors at John Jay, if not the best one, and taking any course with him is time well-spent. If you want to avoid brain drain and actually push yourself to become a strong writer and reader, you should definitely take a class with him. We got to write op-ed style papers for this class and it was really fun!
I highly recommend taking Professor Mandery's hon 201 class if you want to go to law school. He teaches a lot about forming arguments and we read court cases that related to some of the philosophy readings that were assigned. Overall, I feel better prepared to go to law school after taking his class.
Professor Mandery is easily one of the best professors I have taken and probably will take in my academic career. He pushes you in order to be a better thinker and overall a better student. He is very supportive and accessible if you need help within the class. If you work hard in his class, you will do well. Couldn't recommend enough.
The best professor I've had throughout my time at John Jay. I've had Evan three times now and can confidently say if you put in the work you will walk out a far better student, and person than you were coming into that class. His feedback improved my writing tremendously. You won't find another professor who cares about your future as much as Evan.
I loved his class and I would definitely take any of his other classes if I was in the major. He's a very caring professor who helped and supported me through some very difficult times. If you want a professor who actually cares about you growing as a student and a person, I would take his classes.
I was lucky enough to have spent the past year in Evan's class. Evan is the most caring educator and encourages you to be the student & person that he knows you can be. He is extremely supportive, even though he challenges you. Evan is so smart and passionate about his teaching, which creates a really positive class environment.
If you want to be successful in Evan Mandery's classes, you absolutely can be. If you show a willingness to put effort, improve your past work, and engage in the class, Evan will make sure to help you do well in the course and beyond. The classes may be tough and push you, but he's fair. He's one of the best that John Jay has to offer.
If you like to be challenges this is the professor to take. He'll challenge you to think more critically than normal to open more doors for you. You won't ever feel that coming to his class is a waste of time. He encourages group discussion over topics which leads to important need to have discussions or just a bunch of laughter.
There are new ways of teaching. He acts as though he is a competent professor but when students pose questions he dismisses them as if their inquiries are unimportant or gives them a disapproving look as if to say, "Did you really ask that?" His teaching abilities require improvement. The number of professors is not enough CJBS is the ideal choice!
His pop quizzes is his attendance and his score is high due to his other classes. He created this class basically around is law degree and his book. His book he gives you a short amount of time to read it along with long excessive readings. He treats the class like its his TED talk and gets mad when you ask questions. His good ratings other classes
One of the best professors I have had during my time at John Jay. He encourages and pushes you to think critically about the issues that surround the death penalty. He gives you an unlimited amount of rewrites on your essays as he wants to see your writing skills grow.If you work hard, you will do well.Easily one of the best professors I have taken
This is an amazing professor who will go the extra mile for his students. It is a hard class with lots of reading but if you actually just put in the work, you will do well. He genuinely cares about his students and will help make sure they are successful and supported if you communicate with him, show that you are doing the work, and if you try.
Evan is a fantastic professor who cares deeply about his students and is very knowledgeable about the death penalty. This course is challenging but will further your understanding of the death penalty. You will do well if you read the material and work hard. He will also meet with you outside of class and offer assistance if you are struggling.
If you want to pursue anything over a minimum-wage job, take classes like Evan's. ''Easy A'' classes won't teach you anything other than to make your bed. He will make you a better writer, student, and professional. He's also one of the most educated and humble human beings I've ever met. He is constantly concerned with his student's success.
Best Professor I've had at JJay, If you want to learn and make it somewhere in life take him! The class can be difficult but doing the readings and listening closely to discussions would set you up for success. Overall 10/10 Professor, he's very entertaining and knowledgeable.
Participation matters in Evans class. He cares so he wants to know you. He gives pop quizzes based off the readings but if you show effort they won't dramatically effect your class grade. He'll talk about crazy stuff but it's to challenge the ideas we study and see if we get them. I've never seen my writing improve so much in one semester. Awesome!
Worst teacher ever so sarcastic and will ruin your GPA, if you don't need it RUNNNN!
Very strange way of thinking, does not grade work, don't even know when he will update grades if he even grades fairly. Also always critical instead of helpful with feedback he just wants you to already know everything. just overall bizarre
Evan is so far the best professor I've ever taken classes with at John Jay. He cares about what you learn and how you grow throughout the course, so don't take it as something bad if he pushes you to do your best. He loves participation! On top of that, I enjoy how sarcastic he is (in a good way), but that might be a personal preference.
Prospective students should be cautious reading overly positive reviews. Some students have found that feedback is limited, expectations are not clearly communicated, and there is an assumption that students already understand the material. Given ongoing conversations outside the classroom, it may be worth doing additional research before enrolling
