Decent Prof., doesn't go to in depth with problems which is a good thing for business calc. . .test aren't too bad
No Comments
I would not recommend this professor to anyone. His teaching style is really bad and assumes that we know a lot of stuff he teaches. He gets carried away in lectures while doing math problems that he does not realize how fast he is going. His tests are also very hard.
prof. kobotis' teaching style is very hard to follow. he doesnt really go into depth when explaining problems. however, his tests are not toooo bad. if you stay on top of the homework and seek extra help his class wont be bad.
I didn't like Calculus before I took this class. It seemed hard, but the prof made it easy for me and made me love Calculus
He was ok....you have to put a good amount of effort if u wanna get an a in his class. he helps u understand stuff, if u go to his office hrs.
profeesor is difficult and some of his ta's are even worse
A very time consuming class. But if you are on top of your homework and go to lecture and discussions regularly you are sure to get an A in the class. He also gives extra credit and drops low quiz grades. Iam surprised why he got bad ratings from Math 165 students, maybe he doesn't teach Math165 well, but I was satisfied with his way of teaching 180
Good professor, really cares about students and knows his stuff. You'll definitely get an A in his class if you basically do the hw and attend the lectures. Besides that you don't really need to study because the homework's are so long that it basically makes sure you know it, as a result, exams are easy. Gives a lot of extra credit opportunities
He has a thick Greek accent
Great professor. He's interested in what he's teaching, which really helps. He's a grumpy person, but don't take what he says too hard on those days, heh. He moves faster than the other guys, but if you pay attention, and do the homework when you need it, he'll help in class, and you'll end with an A. I definitely want him for calc II.
He goes really fast.
he has an accent but you can still understand him. he wants you to get an A so he gives a lot of opputunities. ie he'll have extra credit and he'll drop several lowest quizes. His exams questions are just like his practice exams. Great professor overall. I recommend him to take
The best math teacher I have ever had; he's clear, and his explanations are great, even if you've never taken calculus before, you can understand what he says. Gives out ridiculous amounts of extra credit. He does discourage you from asking questions, but usually its either because he's already answered them. Show up, listen, take notes, easy A.
knows his stuff and he teaches it at a good level, he moves a bit fast so u might wanna get extra help if u dont get wats happening. Study from hw/problems inclass/studgy guide and ull be fine for exams/quizzes/midterm. BUT IF U DONT LIKE ACCENTS HE IS NOT FOR U! i got used to it though.
He is one of the best professors. He is very dry but still hilarious if you listen closely. I would highly recommend him for any level. He has one rule which that you don't talk while he is. Some dumb kids couldn't comprehend this.
I really enjoyed this class. The material was explained very well. The class moved kind of slow. He is a quaint guy, but once you understand his sense of humor you'll enjoy the class even more. The tests are really easy and he offers a lot of extra credit.
One of the best professors. You will not be sorry if you take him. You will also learn a good deal. He is very on the ball and make very few mistakes. Huge curve and fair tests.
Amazing professor! Wish there were more like him!
very enthusiastic
Great teacher. Definitely knows what hes talking about. Very excited about math and is also very helpful, both in and out of class. As long as you do the homework and pay attention in class, it shouldnt be that hard to get an A.
He is fast paced so be prepared. He is really funny and will rip on you if you fall asleep. Do your homework no matter what because it is easy to fall behind. I had 3 weeks to review for the final because we were done before all the other classes...Great Teacher, He is very passionate and make math interesting.
He's the best professor I've ever had. I hate math, but he made calculus do-able. He's got a quirky sense of humor, and as posted below, will make a fool of you for sleeping in his class. He's really an incredible professor!
i sucked at math period. got an A+ in his class. explains everything.
This guy is definately one of the best. I took Calc 2 with a different prof and had to drop it because i was sure of failing, but with this guy i got an A.
Very good. Trust the rest of the comments cause they are the truth.
Kobotis!!! man, what can i say bout him. he is SMART!! full of knowledge, and he also knows how to TEACH. jus by attending his lectures and listening him good, u're able enough to get an A. He is also VERY helpful and nice. sure hes exams are lil harder than others, but its good for u in the final, cuz final'll be piece of cake for u. TAKE HIM!!!!!
BEST PROFESSOR EVER. THE STUDENTS THAT DO BAD DO NOT SHOW UP TO CLASS AND DO NOT DO THE HOMEWORK. AS LONG AS YOU PAY ATTENTION NO WAY CAN YOU GET LOWER THAN A B. ALSO IF YOU TO THE LECTURE WITH THE REVIEW FOR THE TEST THE REVIEW IS ALMOST EXACTLY LIKE THE TEST
The man is a genius and caters to those who are more math oriented. He moves very fast through the material but uses techniques some of us were never taught. He gives a lot of work, little feedback, and discourages asking questions. If you need to UNDERSTAND (not just do) the material or are not the best at math, prepare to seek a lot of extra help
He was a little grumpy sometimes, but pretty much one of the most caring teachers that I've ever had. He's the only reason that I like math.
do the homework hes cool and a good teacher quizzes are pretty easy dont fall behind the end gets really hard
Loves math and you can see it is his passion when he teaches it. The math can be tough at times but he tries to explain it as well as he can. Offers extra credit which is helpful. Overall is an excellent teacher!!
This professor is amazing. If you do the work, and save your questions for your TA instead of him you will get along in the class fine. He is a very smart man and teaches in a way that makes the math much easier than the way the book teaches. Just remember if he tells you to do something do it.
he is actually ok. he may sometimes act harshly, but as long as you don't put your feet on the chairs, you're ok. his lecutres are, at times, a little boring, but he explains things pretty well. he's really not as bad as everyone thinks! tests are a breeze... that is if you study and remember what you did in discussion. i took him again for 180!
he is actually ok. he may sometimes act harshly, but as long as you don't put your feet on the chairs, you're ok. his lecutres are, at times, a little boring, but he explains things pretty well. he's really not as bad as everyone thinks! tests are a breeze... that is if you study and remember what you did in discussion. i took him again for 180!
Great professor! He has a fascination with mathematics, and he wants the whole class to understand. You need to pay attention to his lectures. If you don't you'll miss intriguing and fun histories behind all the concepts. He assigns more problems than you want to do for homework, but its worth it. I almost got a B. Be careful and don't get behind.
He is a great professor! He explains concepts really well. He emphasizes doing the homework and it really does help a lot! His tests are pretty easy-- they are basically like the review sheets! I wish I had him for Calculus too!
He is only helpful when you ask him, but when you do ask him, he'll make fun of you. He has a deep passion for math. Personally, I don't like his teaching style; so, I learned everything from my TA. Go to lecture b/c he gives out quizzes worth more than the ones in discussion. Tests are just like the reviews. Don't chew gum or text.
It's either arrogance, illusions of grandeur or actual conviction that fuels Evangelos Kobotis's extreme crotchetiness. Whatever it is, learn to deal with it; this man's class is relatively easy and he's actually interesting. The commenters before are serious about "the gums" and putting your feet on the chairs though -- don't do it.
Maybe he's a good teacher for Calculus I but he isn't for Differential Equations. He acts like this is your only class and assigns 20+ problems of homework that you will have less than 2 days to do and even then he collects it randomly. He rushes through the harder sections while spending too much time on easier material as well.
he def. is the best math teacher! you have to try and work somewhat hard but the tests are sooo easy to study for. if you keep up wiht the hw you'll get an A.
he is a very good prof. he gives a lot of homework but this helps u understand. im glad i took the class with him
Best Mather Alive!... Axe...Axe...About em'
He is an awesome professor. He explains everything clearly and makes you want to learn. He is also HOt and has a cute accent
You have to be willing to learn. He explains everything well, but he isn't so great at explaining integrals or optimization problems. Learn them on your own. I pretty much changed my whole schedule around to have him. The exams are really easy! I ended up w/ an A...take him.
GREAT prof. Many in-class-quizzes; so, go to lecture. There are discussion quizzes every week as well. One midterm. He ends his lessons almost 3-4 weeks before the final...enough time to study! He reviews and reviews. Don't let him intimidate you. Funny and really nice guy. Had him for 2 semesters. He loves math, and one can tell.
great professor but has a pet peeve about chewing gum in class and feet on chairs! hes not so great at optimization problems give like one or two examples. alot of quizzes, three exams go lecture and discussion! exams are easy but you have to study because he throws some weird optimization problems and graphs! 6 problems for exams and 10 for final!
Dr. Kobotis lectures are a race against time, he finished the material 3 weeks before the final. During lectures he spends 30 minutes to go over self-designed homework problems, even though the exams resemble only book problems. He takes all the time in the world to help students with the homework, but teaches you nothing step by step.
Excellent professor. Tests are not difficult, very helpful during office hours. Great personality.
Excellent teacher who goes through problems step by step. Midterms & final were really easy - got 100% on all 3. 10 lecture quizzes & weekly discussion quizzes. Homework assignments are due almost every lecture. He's clearly extremely intelligent & really knows calc inside & out. My only gripe is I felt like he talked down to students at times.
Charming, thoughtful, good-looking and glib man. Really nice guy who means well but chooses the wrong pedagogical approach. There is a solutions manual for math, we don't need Dr. Kobotis for that. Time should be spent on a step-by-step and slow approach in class in order to be able to actually do the homework! What's up with that?
he definitely knows the subject well, but he goes really fast sometimes. He tends to teach what he wants to teach, even if it has nothing to do with the class, or calculus for that matter. Still recommend him, he cracks me up.
Taught myself everything, once again. The quizzes and tests are great practice. GO TO CLASS.
I seriously adore Kobotis. He is one of the best the math department has. Gives ample examples, good homework problems, reviews, solutions...purely great. Looking back, I miss him lol Just don't chew gum.
He will "cook up some recipes" to help you through the course, "I repeat" lol.. great instructor but just dont chew gum and ask stupid questions he will belittle you in front of the class lol! master integration by parts and youll be golden! do homework and attend class! make sure you get andrew as t.a. he is awesome! no rosemary i says!
Kobotis is the best teacher I've had. All around in every subject. I took him two semesters in a row and changed my schedule just to be in his class. I wish he was teaching m class this semester too. His lectures are difficult but hes a strong believer in getting help and studying. If you attend lectures and do the homework, you can get an A.
Very strict professor. Study hard for quizzes and exams..he watches you like a watch dog during exams! Be sure not to chew gum in class or talk during lecture.
He is a great professor, he explains things very clearly. He really cares about his students. The tests are fair, but make sure to review. The first test was a joke, an the second was much more difficult.
Kobotis is one of the best math teachers at UIC. Not only is he loud and clear, he knocks away those obnoxious gum chewers and those people who put their foot next to you during class. He even gives xtra problems to students! If you show up in class and do well, you'd get an easy A. I barely used the book (except for hw problem) and I got a solid A
Prior to the class my mindset was fixed on getting through the last math class of my life. Afterwards, it's an entirely different story, and I truly believe Kobotis is responsible for inspiring me to continue my math career. Put simply, a brilliant professor. Highly recommend him.
Professor Kobotis is AMAZING!!!He is tough with his pop quizzes and rules, but it is extremely worth it. He is really helpful and knows his stuff. He is honestly one of the best math profs. at UIC. He can be a little intimidating, but he'll warm up. ALWAYS attend class because his notes are so helpful. High recommend him!!!
Kobotis has mastered the art of lecturing. Is slightly heavy in assigning homework, however, your time spent working in his class won't be render itself frivolous. Exams will appear easier, too.
Awesome professor!
differential equation. Awesome professor but must be there on time or u would miss a lot of the on going quizzes. however he will drop about 2 or 3. Amazing teaching, very helpful and gets your attention and interests you. Perfect, MUST TAKE HIM FOR DIFF EQ!
Prof. Kobotis is a great professor for Calc.2! Calc. 2 is known to be one of the toughest math classes but he makes understandable and interesting. He has a passion like no other prof. and sincerely cares about his students. He even knows you by name! You get tons of pop quizzes but they are only to your benefit. MUST TAKE HIM!!!!
His lectures are short but extremely good. He likes to cover extra materials and really teaches you the essence of math, not just calc II. If you do well on his quizzes, the homework and the daily problems, the exams should be VERY easy. Okay ... the guy is intimidating, make sure you behave properly in class and don't ask stupid questions.
Great professor who not only knows mathematics--he loves mathematics; shows enthusiasm about the field and passes on his knowledge; lectures are condensed--necessary to stay attentive and take notes; homework assigned everyday, but proves beneficial for tests and quizzes, which seem easier in the long run; dedicated and respectable overall.
hes a very good teacher...great at explaining material. Dont chew gum or put your foot on chairs and you will be fine. Gives quizzes in lecture randomly so you must attend. Tests are easy if youre prepared.
Great teacher. Well prepared for his lectures, knows what he is doing.
Coming from a strong background, I found his lectures very useful. They explain the topic better than the book. Don't take this class for an A because grades are irrelevant, Prof. Kobotis will reveal the math universe that you never knew. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and have no hesitation recommending anyone to take him. Thank you Professor.
Great teacher. Gets very mad if you sleep in lecture, so if you want to sleep in his lectures, bring a pillow and a blanket.
I think Kobotis is the best professor I've come across in UIC. He really does make you love math! Kobotis prepares you sufficiently for all the exams. The amount of homework and quizzes is huge, but it was all worth it. I laughed quietly when I first saw the exam, thinking how easy it is compared to practice he gave us. Go for him, and work hard!
Professor Kobotis is the best MATH professor at UIC! He teaches you to view math from a different perspective and to learn to love it. He is extremely helpful and truly cares about his students. He challenges his students and pushes them beyond the conventional material usually taught. Yes, you have to put in a lot of hard work, but it is all worth
BEST PROFESSOR!!!!! If I have the opportunity to take him again, I will! He explains things so clearly and you actually understand what you are learning.
Professor Kobotis is an excellent math teacher. He is fast-paced and to-the-point. Evangelos assigns homework that helps understand the material without being busy work. The overall tests are a bit difficult but what can you expect from a Calculus class. I recommend Professor Kobotis to any UIC student who wants to get an A in Math 180.
This man singlehandedly made me appreciate and love math, a subject I loathed before. Lectures are informative, tests and quizzes are fair. There is a lot of homework but it doesn't count for much of your final grade. He calls people out regularly for talking in class, because he demands and expects respect. He deserves it. A+++ would take again.
excellent professor! very clear and specific in his explanations. gives quizzes in class but they dont count for much of your grade. exams are straight-forward, if you put work in the class you will get an A. the final is much more difficult than the exams but he gives a very generous curve.
Very good teacher.Has a great sense of humor that only those with an intelligent mind will understand.Daily quizzes and homework help a lot.Although it may seem like a work load, it will prepare you for exams. You should attend class everyday so you do not miss out. Before class he will go over homework problems of your choice.Best Math181 instructor
He is the best math professor I've had at UIC.Does lots of examples and always answers questions. He writes his own hw problems so you don't have to buy a book.
Iwas kind of skeptic at first with this course overall, However, Professor Kobotis came through in the end, always available, always reliable. Just seen that he takes the time and effort to set up a website for his students that in the long run helps them get through the course, shows his value and credibility as a Proffesor. a must take
took 220 and 310 with him. i wish he taught everything. his daily problems are very helpful. i still use his website when i need to remember stuff. i love kobotis
Kobotis is the best. You have a lot of work but you will actually understand the subject. Also you will do very well on the midterms. great professor and guy
This class was a lot of work! Expect anywhere from 5-10 hours of hw every wk, including problem sets, mathlab, daily quizzes, and in-class quiz prep. But, if you put in the work you will understand the material and have great grades - it's definitely worth it. Don't buy the text, it comes online with mathlab.
You have to do a lot of work but it will help understand the subject. He is really helpful.
He is the best math professor I had at UIC.His explanations are crystal clear and he actually answers the questions. You have to do a lot of HW and quizzes but after that the exams seem too easy.Definitely take him,he knows how to teach!
This class is too much work. I'm not a freshman. I have a serious job and I do not have time for several daily quizzes plus homework. He also assumes you know way more than you do. You must know ALL trig functions to even hold a conversation in his class. He has a HUGE ego too! I do not doubt that he is good, but this was too much for me.
Very Hard class!!!! He expects you to do tons of work that will not be on any exams. Does not take time to let you understand before moving on to harder material. And finished the material 3 weeks early. Take someone else!
Kobotis is truly a great professor! He knows the material like the back of his hand. Be warned though...you must be quite proficient in algebra beforehand. I hadn't taken trigonometry since high school, but I relearned along the way so it is not necessary to be as proficient with trigonometry. I earned an A with pure HARD WORK! Definitely worth it!
He is awesome and is so helpful with everything. Do the work and you will know the material. It's helpful especially when you want to move on in math. You will do a lot harder problems than will ever be on a test so you will always be prepared. It's a lot of work but it is not very time consuming. I seriously recommend taking him. He is also funny!
This man is a genius. It seems like he knows everything about mathematics. He really opens your eyes to new mathematical levels. If you are the A in every math class type of student, and one who loves math, then take this course. Unfortunately the class is hard and he does not explain very well. He expects you to know a lot of math beforehand.
Professor Kobotis is a really good teacher. He does examples in class that are similar to his homework problems, so homework is not that bad. Also he post 2 example problems every single day, so if you are stuck you can refer to those problems and everything will be good. I recommend him!!
Awesome teacher! Gives everyday homework which helps you review and learn the material
He is an GREAT teacher! I highly recommend taking his class. He does expect you to know material from previous math classes, so make you do.
He's best if you learn by practice. He'll give you hard homework/quizzes, but then the tests you can ace easily. Be warned, daily quizzes means daily, mon, tue, wed, thur, fri, sat, sun, thanksgiving, everyday. There's 100 of them. His site is also useful and his homework is eaiser than using a book. Take him if you want someone who likes math
Hard class! His teaching style discourages students to ask questions. Whenever student asks him a question, he says this sentence to that student, "We did the same problem 2 days ago, check your notes."I understand that asking the same question is a waste of time but not always. If u have any questions abt hmwork problem, ask ur TA during discussion
His course was kind of fast paced at first and I was kind of lost for the first month. But i think thats because I didn't take precalculus before hand. Just study and ask the TA any questions you have and you should be able to pass the class easily. I got a B and i did semi ok on the exams.
Very good professor. Very approachable and explains problems well in class. Don't chew gum, put your feet on the chairs or talk when he's talking. Arriving on time is crucial. Pay attention in class and you're golden. (Also, homework is posted online, as are daily quizzes). Important: ONLINE FORUM FOR QUESTIONS! Big Help!
Kobotis is a good professor. He is strict with his rules and he will enforce them. He has everything on his website with answers and insightful explanations. I loved it because I didn't have to worry about the textbook. You submit your scores for quizzes on his website. We had a daily quiz + weekly lecture quizzes.
He is a really nice guy with a funny accent. His class is tough. Homework everyday. Yes plus weekends. Not many problems but many assignments. Tough class. Many quizzes. He goes really fast so if you can't work with fast teaching, get a different teacher. Good teacher overall but really tough.
Very strict, but it's normal; this is college. Daily quizzes due by 12am, weekends & holidays included. Moves along very fast, but is very helpful if you take the time to ask. First math course in college, so it was a strong blow for me. Take good notes, pay attention, don't chew gum or put your feet up, and you'll get an A :)
He is an amazing professor. The class is fast paced, but he is very thorough when teaching. Look at past exams to help you study for the exams. If you try doing the homework/quizzes, then you can pass the exams easily. He gives DAILY quizzes, but you can input your own grade online.
He would stop lecture for a few minutes just to call anyone out for texting or eating. It really threw off my concentration. We took daily quizzes and would spend the whole period going over them when we were done, leaving no time for lecture. So you'd get a new quiz the next day without ever learning the material. Had to teach myself (poorly)
I've always been bad at math. He does a good job presenting new concepts to students who are new at calculus. Although I didn't do as well as I wanted to in his class, he is still an organized professor who knows what he's talking about. Has a true passion for what he teaches.
Really strict and fast-paced(finished material 2weeks early), but teaches everything well. Lots of quizzes, but helpful overall. Downside is, it was hard to ask questions in class cause he would get a short temper, but maybe it's different when you see him during office hours(I never did). He really does prepare you well though for a hard course.
ok. professor. he finishes the topics quickly and moves to different topics eventhough students are stuck on the previous one.Math center = waste of time. practice all old exams. get old homework from ur friend who took his class before; otherwise u will be so confused as he moves to another chap quickly. try to get every single point as possible.
Tough grader. Alot of work. Expects you to know stuff you learned a long time ago. Cant chew gum and no phones-he will call you out and move you. Nice guy kinda funny but not my favorite math teacher..
Excellent professor, but very strict. Definitely challenging. I've had many math teachers & he explains complex topics with the upmost clarity. He structures the class very well, & we didn't even use a textbook. Very hard A to get, especially during summer, but doable. If you go to class, practice over and over, & listen to his advice you can do it
Honestly...if you are taking a math course at UIC...TAKE HIM PERIOD. you will never ever have a professor like him again.
This professor is one of the best at UIC. If you're taking Calc. 2, make sure you take him. He is very clear and goes over old material unlike other math teachers. He is strict, but that is why he is such a good teacher. Highly recommended. Calc 2 is hard so don't expect to breeze by. Lastly, don't chew gum, talk during his lecture, or divide by 0!
Had him for Calc1, made sure I had him for Calc2 (& hoping Calc3). Best math professor Ive ever had. No textbook & lots of resources on his site. Ppl complain bout daily quizzes, lots of HW, & his strictness, but thats what makes him good. Calc2 is one of the hardest classes on campus, you can't expect to understand everything w/o studying hard.
Great professor but I would not take him again for treating his students like they were in high school. I understand the no cell phones and no talking rules but no chewing gum? Seriously? He will make you get up and spit it out. If you use your phone, he'll make you get up and sit in front. There is no reason to treat young adults like hs kids.
Hands down BEST prof @ UIC. Clear, concise and breaks downs ur question so you can understand his answr better. Ppl complain about his HS rules but honestly its rude to be on ur phone, sleep, and most of the gum ends up under desks. He's just trying to make sure he has your full attn. Best part is he doesn't use a txtbk nd he's upfront about it
Great professor. Knows his information very well and is always willing to help those that care. I am taking him for Math 181 and I am excited to be in his class again.
I've had Professor Kobotis for Calc 1, Calc 2, and now Calc 3. He is the best math professor I've ever had, and has an excellent teaching style. His website is an invaluable tool and his class format is perfect. His pace is much quicker than others so make sure you are comfortable with the material or he may not be best for your style of learning.
Excellent. He genuinely cares about his students and wants them to learn. That's why his rules of etiquette are in place: to create an environment that promotes learning. He answers any questions you may have via a forum on his personal website; no textbook to buy; finishes material 2 weeks early, allowing for tons of review time. Need I say more?
He's definitely passionate about his subject. I loved him in Calc 1, and couldn't get into his class for Calc 2 but I got in for Calc 3. Bad idea. He goes way too fast to understand anything, and barely does examples on the board. He's too obsessed with chewing gum and texting, which has stopped the lecture mid-sentence before. Be careful. No book!
Makes his own exams and treats his students like little children. Very demanding and is very picky. No laptops, cellphones, tablets, gum, and no talking. If you ask a question then he will reply making you feel dumb. Everyday there are quizzes which aren"t helpful due to them not being on the final exam. Lots of Homework. Recommend someone else.
First off, he is the funniest guy. He calls people out for chewing gum or talking, which is hilarious. He does his best to explain Calc 3, but Calc 3 is so confusing that its impossible to explain. No book is the best part. There is also a hefty predetermined curve.
After having him for Calc II, I seized the opportunity to learn Calc III from Professor Kobotis, also. I took the course in 8 weeks over the summer. It was extremely fast-paced. However I must say he's even better with a very small class size, as he can be more focused because there are fewer distractions (chewing gum, phones, talking, etc.).
He treats people like their in grade school. His lectures are pointless and confusing. I learned everything from the book and internet.
Brings the fear back into the classroom; daily quizzes and strict rules. But its all a facade. He's a really great guy and genuinely cares about his students. The quizzes are tedious, but you learn an incredible amount from them. His exams are based exactly on the material he teaches, no surprises. Highly recommend him over any other calc teacher.
If you can, avoid this guy.
He pushes students to do extra work with his extra quizes and optional homework and review sheets. His online lectures are also helpful. I would recommend him over your other options for math at UIC.
Professor: - Strict: no gum, no electronics, no talking - Loves math and knows it well - Can be confusing (doesn't realize that things obvious 2 him are not obvious 2 every1 else) Class: - Great for any1 who likes math - 3 five minute presentations paired each w a 2 page paper, 1 partner 10 minute presentation with a 20 page paper
Kobotis is a great teacher--as long as you stay on his good side. He has some strict rules (no eating gum, no whispering, etc), but if you can avoid those and pay attention you're good. The class itself was VERY easy. However, the concepts he taught were difficult and unclear. If you go to him for help he is helpful--although intimidating.
Taking Kobotis can be both a blessing and a curse. The pace of the course is quick and Kobotis is strict but he means well. He wants you to really learn the material (Very motivational professor). Unfortunately the TA was of no help, considering he has to grade 115 students' homework and exams by himself. MLC will save your grade! Good luck
He was really good at teaching and cares about his students learning. Quizzes pretty frequently and weekly written homework. During exams he brings in Oreos for everyone to take when they're done. Great guy!
He's got an accent and irrational pet peeves but he's a phenomenal professor. He will give you a plethora of opportunities to practice, understand & master calculus BUT you have to put in the work. He's got a website with online lessons and practice problemsexams. Not the most approachable guy but talk to him and he will soften up.
Thinks his class is the only one students are taking, this class is ALOT of work, get ready to write long essays (10-15 single spaced, 20-30 double spaced) TWICE. if you can, take a different honors class!!!! Although he is very passionate about math, you really need to be advanced in your math career in order to understand his lectures.
The work load for this class is higher than other CALC 2 classes because he likes to make students memorize things he will never test them on and he will introduce topics not on the syllabus. He doesn't follow the book and which would be great if we could understand him. If he is having a bad day you notice it easily. Will never take him again.
You have to work ahead to be successful.
Took him for calc 3. He is strict, but good. He makes you have a binder, and print quiz templates. This actually is a good thing. Im usually disorganized and procrastinate. He basically sets you up to succeed. If you do what he says, you will not fail. He is very good at doing lecture, explaining what you need to know on the board, just copynotes!
Prof. Kobotis is very strict. He has rules like no chewing gum, no using of electronics, no talking, etc and he is very strict in enforcing it. However, I like that attitude on him. If you can overlook that, he's a really great and smart lecturer. Ironically, Calc 3 has been my easiest calc mainly because Kobotis is really good in explaining.
Kobotis is amazing. The class is a breeze if you take if seriously and pay attention. Homework is tough but you have time to do it. 14 pop quizzes but they are 5% of your grade. He has office hours and he'll help you if you go. The midterms are easy but the final is a little hard.I'd take his class a million times!
One 10-15 page biography paper, 10 pages with no pictures and up to 15 if you include pictures. Next assignment is a presentation of the biography paper, 5 minutes long. Next assignment is to watch 12 movies and write 12 one page reviews. Last is a 10-15 page paper solely about 2-3 lines of mathematical proof. In the end, gives A's if you worked.
He wants thinkers, not users in his class, so don't think memorizing everything will give you the most for your money here. He is very strict with his rules, so I'd recommend tossing any gum before coming into his class. There's no other professor who will break a lesson down like he will, and he is a very personable man outside of class.
A lot of work and does not require a mathematical way of thinking. Teaches you to think in a different manner and does help greatly in understanding other mathematical classes such as calc II (math 181) and calc III (math 210). There are incredibly long papers due in the class but he is more lenient with the other assignments.
Despite his constant need to establish his authority, he is a great professor. Always willing to answer questions and teaches the material in a very simple and organized way. Gives the occasional pop quiz but they only count for a very small percentage of the grade. Abide by the rules he sets or you will not hear the end of it.
Great professor! Sets basic classroom rules like no chewing gum, no feet on the table, no talking while he is talking, but as long as you abide by these rules you'll have no problem. Gives a quiz every week or so (20 quizzes total). He is very approachable and can help you understand anything you're stuck on. Encourages students to ask questions.
He's very dedicated to mathematics, and he's infectious with his enthusiasm. He's very clear, and he teaches you HOW to learn the math, not just the math, itself. He expects you to dedicate a lot of time to studying the material, but I got a B regardless. He gives you time during lecture to think through a problem and is very patient with questions
Great math Professor. Take him for math 180,181, and 210 if possible. Lectures are clear and are extremely helpful
He is an amazing professor. He is straightforward and to the point. He expects you to put in a lot of time and effort in order to learn the material. Don't expect to have your hand held. Overall I would take him again.
Professor Kobotis does a great job of presenting the material in a simple manner and gives very good examples of difficult concepts. His lectures are very important so definitely take notes and review the examples. Some say he is very strict but just simply follow his rules and you will have no problems
Prof. Kobotis was one of the most influential calc professors I've taken. He urges his students to ask questions. He doesn't demand much, other than basic classroom etiquette. His homework load is light and exams are straightforward. He gives pop quizzes to make sure you're up to speed in the class. It's pretty clear he wants students to succeed.
He's a great professor, in hon131 you will learn a lot math. But there's a lot papers!First his format is basically 10pt font, single space, half inch margin. so1 page 3 pages mla format. 13 movies reviews (about half page per movie) a biography about a mathematician 10 pages. A mathematical paper about a math theorem(10 pages)but he grade easily
Not much mathematical knowledge is needed. The lectures might be harder to understand, but all the quizzes are based off of them. Quizzes are almost every lecture until the middle of the semester. Two papers are needed, one biographical one mathematical. Be prepared to teach yourself how to use LATEX. Just do your work on time and respect the prof.
Straight forward teacher. Teaches well, gives you a website to use to enforce understanding, and is available during office hours. If you put in the work and don't get too far behind you'll pass easily. Class was almost a joke compared to math 181. He has strict rules for his class so be prepared for disrespectful students to waste your time.
A high quality, but strict professor that sometimes rubs off as extremely rude to be brutally honest. Nonetheless, he wants you to learn, and he's simply passionate about the subject and math altogether.
Kobotis does a great job of teaching the topics, and cares to survey the class' questions to make sure he doesn't move on without anyone. If you're willing to ask him, he's willing to answer. He doesn't depend on powerpoint slides, so he's interactive by writing on the board the whole time. Surprise quizzes though. Would take again.
Many will disagree but I found kobotis lectures to be confusing. He is knowledgeable of the topic but personally I couldn't understand his teaching method. I learned Calc III through professor lenoard on youtube. Although I will end up having A, from personal experience I had better professors at UIC than him
Horrible. Horrible. Horrible. Beware. Rambles on and on about theory that does nothing to help prepare you for his tough exams. Pop quizzes were annoying. Acts like a tough guy and is too strict. If you'd like to get bored out of your mind and learn nothing, take him. Would not recommend him to someone I hate.
Kobotis is a strict lecturer. While he may seem intimidating, he is very friendly outside of class. He is always willing to put in the extra time to help you understand the material. A very knowledgeable man. If you follow his classroom rules you should have no problems taking his class.
The only professional thing about the professor is his vocabulary. Doesn't know the right manner to talk to students when approached for help. Lectures are fine if you like learning theory. Those who like examples, you won't find them here. I wouldn't chose him again.
Good professor. Strong class etiquette so dont disrespect him. Grade cut off to get an A is an 82. Class is doable, but (this may sound stupid or doesnt make sense) his grading is not lenient. You get 1 problem wrong on exam, you loose 10/100 pts. If you get 1 problem wrong on the hw they randomly choose to grade you on, you lose 10/10 pts.
Kobotis was always clear on what he expects from his student. For every exam he made sure to give us a list of what will be tested and went example problems. Although he gives a quiz at the beginning of every class, they're really simple. As long as you show up every class, you'll definitely pass.
Okay, besides the fact we have a one problem quiz every lecture over the material covered in the previous lecture, he is a must take! His pace is perfect and goes over the material slow and clearly. I had no trouble with the course and he is an easy going guy. Just no phones. For the best learning experience I recommend him.
Very engaging lecturer, with a deep understanding of the material. This may be different for other classes, but I had him for a history of mathematics course. Gives a lot of quizzes, but tells you explicitly what they will be on. Professor Kobotis truly cares about the material he is teaching, and his students.
Be prepared for a quiz over covered material almost daily for a large portion of the semester. Although the material is not bad (memorization), it adds another hour or so of studying on top of other HW. The class is very interesting however. If you get a kick out of math, you'll love the class. Also basically guaranteed an A
An amazing teacher. Extremely strict, but in a way that people seem to actually listen. You'll need to pay attention in lecture and do the homework, but I definitely enjoyed the class.
it is what it is
Go to class, pay attention, and take notes. Do all the homework and understand the problems. If you do that, you will get a good grade in the class. Some say Kobotis runs a tight ship but he expects fairly basic things thing: don't talk during his lecture, don't be on your phone, don't chew gum, and ask questions. Would take class w. Kobitis again.
After my second semester with Professor Kobotis, I can definitely say he's grown on me. Homework is due daily, with quizzes similarly daily. However, if you keep up with the work, you quite literally will not need to study for the midterms as his lectures are very well organized and informative. His website is also a gem in the UIC math department.
He is an awesome teacher. He does several examples in class to help with your homework. There are only 3 homework assignments a week. There are quizzes every lecture but he chooses 1 of the 3 that he posts on his website so as long as you look at them youll pass. Plus he drops about 3 quizzes. Very easy grader and very considerate. An A is an 82%
Professor Kobotis is a tough but caring professor. He goes of the material thoroughly, and answers any and all questions. If he makes a mistake, he apologizes profusely. He has a strict policy of no phones in class, which I hated at first, but it led to me actually paying attention in class. One of the best lecturers I have ever had.
Great lecturer, great math teacher. Take this guy if you can. He has EXTENSIVE knowledge of the field of mathematics, and lets you know that. Talks about why formulas were created and their origins. His tests are extremely straight forward and reflect the homework easily.
Math220 isn't a class that's usually taken because someone wants to. Usually its there for students who have it as a requirement, but not a single day went by in his class that felt like i was there because i had to be there. Prof. Kobotis' class was really one where you felt bad if you truly couldn't attend. Enticing, fun, natural storyteller.
Great professor, not very hard but you have to do work. Honestly glad I took MATH 170 instead of MATH 180. Expect a lot of quizzes (he gives you some questions beforehand though), and expect a few problems of homework due every other day. Exams are 10 questions and he gives you a good idea of what will be on them. 10/10 would suggest.
Perfect image of a typical college professor. I am glad I am taking Math 170 instead of 180. Lectures are extremely important to attend and is very good at explaining the material. Three homework assignments a week, quizzes nearly every lecture, and multiple examples during lectures are helpful in learning and retaining the information.
Professor Kobotis is actually not a bad professor. Besides the abundance of quizzes and the lecture heavy classes, He makes things that once seemed foreign to me very clear. Props to him!
His rules may seem harsh, but they're in place for your benefit. He genuinely wants you to pass. He explains things very nicely, and takes a moment to pause the lecture to take any questions. He makes learning this math stuff not as bad.
There is simply no better choice than Professor Kobotis. If you have the option to take him, DO IT. You will learn math in the clearest, most helpful manner. Professor Kobotis not only knows math inside and out, he can actually TEACH it, and teach it well. Anyone complaining simply didn't put in the effort. He commands respect and receives it. Take
It's impossible to not get an A in this class. He's so passionate about math and he is so good at explaining different concepts! He gives lots of examples of all possible scenarios you may face and he tells you if certain questions will be on the exams. His quizzes are posted online to study before you take them in class. Super chill guy! Love him!
DON'T BUY THE TEXTBOOK!!!!! You show up everyday do a quiz that selects one problem of 3 that are on his website with answers and do examples on the board. Also takes one week to review for exams. Tells you what are on tests and doesn't make the problems very tricky but know your trig identities. 82A. Actually waits for you to think of questions.
If you want to fall in love with math take professor kobotis, he's passionate about what he teaches, and his teaching methods are awsome.
Excellent professor
He is very passionate about mathematics. Through his class, I gained an entirely new perspective and respect for the field of mathematics. Since this was an Honors College course, you are expected to put in work. He has a few quirky (well-enforced) rules, but they encourage professionalism in and outside the classroom.
He loves what he teaches. He has some rules (no chewing gum, no phones, etc.) which he enforces and will call you out on. He has a really good website that he allows his classes to use to study, USE it. He is a tough professor, BUT he is very good at teaching. If you want to learn Math 310 well, you will love this class.
One amazing math genius-- learning mathematics has never been so fun. He is very good at explaining. If you are not smart in Math then you will be from this guy. Hes the best professor at UIC. He has occasional daily quizzes to make sure you are understanding. They are easy. Hes honestly smarter than Einstein, and his teaching may make you one too.
Kobotis is very strict with how his classroom is ran. I got scolded so many times for not sitting up straight, chewing gum, and cracking my fingers. I took this professor for both calculus and his honors course. He is definitely a better math teacher. I would not recommend his honors class. Both his standards and love for math are very high.
Was very passionate about the material and while it the topics are strange it is still interesting. Quizzes do involve decent amount of memorization but with a bit of studying they are not hard. He is very tough when grading but also acknowledges that and for the final project starts very early with multiple drafts to get exactly what he wants.
2 midterms and a final. He has quizzes everyday for attendance, but answers are put up online beforehand won't affect grade much. Also daily hw for discussion attendance. Recommend to go to his review sessions for finals and midterms because he literally puts the same problems on the exams. Just don't make professor mad he will call you out.
Honestly a great at teaching, easy grader, although strict personality (but he definitely cares for his students). I had never had calc before this class and I was able to pass with an A. Basically just do the homework and practice the quiz answers and you'll be fine. Make sure to go to his review classes, the questions are all on the final.
Would NEVER take any class of his again. Curriculum was very unclear, seemed like he was just winging it. The actual class was pretty easy but he was just very unpredictable, and unnecessarily strict about certain things like chewing gum and being late to class. Definitely would not recommend. He was easier on his favorites
He jokes about how some students dont like his strict structure of his classes, but I like the structure because it makes one really focus on the material. If you'd rather sleep in class, skip the day; he'd rather his students be well-rested and ready to learn. He loves answering any questions. He wants everyone to pass but doesn't just give A's.
Really straightforward lectures. Quizzes everyday to make you show up for class everyday, but these quizzes are only 1 or 2 questions. These helped me understand the topics a lot more. Gives the topics to study for for an exam along with a sample exam. Did really well on the exams and the class overall. You'll get an A if you show up everyday
Prof Kobotis is very passionate a/b math it shows through his lectures. Gives out one-question quizzes every lecture, but posts three potential quiz q's on his website w/ solution beforehand and selects one, so you know what'll be on the quiz. Curves a lot (A was an 82). Very strict about gum-chewing & talking, he will definitely call you out.
He's an amazing professor and he genuinely cares for his students. His lectures are very clear. He gives a quiz every lecture but it's one problem and he posts the solutions online prior to class and his review guides for exam are almost identical to the exams. It's very easy to get an A as long as you show up and do the work.
I wanted to like him but he is anal with his rules and comes off very disrespectful in lecture to students. I thought he couldve explained things better and looking back I wish I had bought the textbook. There is so much homework, very hard final. The TAs were bad too, which he knew. Quizzes in lecture which make attendance mandatory. Take 180.
hw three times a week, but they're only four questions & a lot like examples done in class. drops lowest three hws and quizzes. pop quiz each lecture, but possible questions/utions are posted on his website. gives helpful study guides for every exam. makes the material make sense for everyone (even if u suck at math).
Kobotis is an amazing professor. I am glade took his class. Even though my class was at 8am felt wide awake and was ready to take notes. His way to lecturing is great. He makes difficult materials easier to understand.
Professor Kobotis is extremely knowledgable and seems to pull facts and stories out of nowhere (it's impressive). He teaches and writes very clearly and works to bring every student to an understanding of the topic. He also is very clear about what is necessary for quizzes and assessments and is open to outside meetings to discuss things.
Professor Kobotis is a somewhat decent teacher. He keeps students engaged in class and make sure everyone plays a role in discussions. He is also extremely proficient in mathematics, which shows in his masterful lectures. However, he can often be condescending. He always gets mad if you mispronounce names of mathematicians, which is annoying.
The class is so unstructured and unorganized. He expects you to memorize a bunch of mathematics that no undergrad could ever understand. He thinks memorizing without understanding will somehow make you "learn". Also, he makes a big fuss out of little things, like mispronouncing historical names, chewing gum, using phones, etc.
Love kobotis. He made the transition online real easy and he made calc 3 really easy to understand. He did have weird rules while we were irl but they made sense. No chewing gum, no feet on chairs, no talking unless its a question, and NO PHONES. You can have a tablet to take notes tho. He also has a short quiz but the answers are on his webpage
We had to memorize advanced math that, as a non-math major undergrad, was impossible to understand. Most people got an A in the class though, and he gave me an A on every paper I wrote; getting an A in the class is not too hard, but the class was very frustrating & a LOT of work. There are WAY easier Honors courses to take. Also, he was often rude.
Online lectures are clear, organized, and easy to understand.
Kobotis was a G. He gave tons of examples on his site for the course, guides you for the tests, the quizzes and hw's. He really wants you to understand each concept, which there's a lot of, and he doesn't mind reviewing a problem multiple times to help. Definitely use his notes, they work. Only have to go for the in-class quizzes.
He was a great teacher, but I wish he would show more examples of problem for the written homework. I could not find any material for the written homework, some question you will. I would often ask the TA or a friend for help because I would not understand how to do a certain problem. Written homework is much harder then exams.
Professor Kobotis is an amazing teacher. He does make math (calculus) so interesting, and his lectures include a lot of examples and problem solving. He always asks if we have any questions, and there is a lot of homework, which was actually helpful because a lot of them will help you improve understanding & prepare for what may come in the exams.
Its a shame that a professor who is passionate about mathematics is horrible at running a class. His attendance policy is unforgiving, wont answer questions which aren't grammatically correct and shuts down any conversation in chat boxes. There have been instances where a student asks a genuine question and is told its too basic for him to answer.
prof Kobotis is so passionate about math and honestly his class just made me excited to learn again. he's super funny too. and story times in class are absolutely amazing
Terrible online professor. I can tell he is a good teacher but his method of synchronous teaching is a awful. Simply must be told to anyone looking to take his courses. AVOID HIS SYNCHRNONOUS CLASSES! Synchronous is where you have to show up on Zoom with him and follow along. Overall, good professor just absolutely awful online.
Terrible at online teaching. Attendance is like that State Farm fishing meme of "you almost had it" because of you send the key word a split second after he says done he says it won't count towards attendance but it's okay because "you can skip 3 or 4 before dropping a letter grade" even though it happens often.
Awesome funny dude. Makes topics very interesting and literally tells you exactly what kind of questions are gonna be on his exam.
The class itself is pretty easy; discussions always have quizzes though they're very easy and if you miss it just email your TA. Study guides will help for exams and ask him if you need more help. He takes attendance seriously and has his own way where he says a word and asks you to type it in the chat before he types done. Try not to miss it lol.
Class is about prime numbers and some theory around it. He goes off tangent a lot, but there are like 6 quizzes. There are several papers but he asks to use LaTex instead of Word, so brush up your coding skills. Ask him if you need any help. He does ask for participation, so get ready to do that as well. There is a final project too but it's simple
Tbh I took this class years ago but just remembered his weird power complex and wanted to write that in here. One time accused me of having gum in my mouth and stopped the class for it (frequent). But I didnt have any gum because I didnt want that to happen to me. Was very awkward but yeah he loves math. Class not impossible just time consuming.
I finished this class with a C unfortunately even though I rated this professor 4 stars because his class materials were fair. I didn't pay attention to his lectures. I did poorly on his exams because I was taking other hard classes and didn't have time to work hard for this course. Please take it seriously.
I think Prof Kobotis is the only actually good professor at UIC. He is a little strict about talking and chewing gum. The homework is easy, he gives the quiz answers the night before the quiz. Attendance isn't mandatory but there are daily quizzes so it would be hard to pass if you don't ever attend. I miss this class so much.
Showing up to class is pointless he sucks, just read the book!
Made the material very easy to understand and allowed plenty of practice for the class to catch on and learn thoroughly. He is stern about showing respect in the classroom, so no talking or texting, but I think that shouldn't bother people too much. He also offers extra credit by learning to solve a Rubiks cube.
Do not recommend.
He's a fair professor.
It was one of the most experiences of my life taking this class back in 2018. He is so rude and will have constant power trips interrupting the class for the dumbest reasons ever.I talked to him several times about help and he was plain rude! thanks to him I changed my major. AVOID HIM
Every test is exactly like the study guide given, the problems are the same except with some numbers changed. If you do the study guides before tests and know them very well, you will 100% get a good grade in the class. Very clear and easy when compared to MATH180. Also the grading scale for the class is very generous, a low 80 being an A.
His passion for math clearly shows and he explains things really well.
When is comes to calc 3 he's very bad at explaining concepts and gets side tracked a lot.
I'm a STEM major but I'm terrible at math. This class was the only required math course for my major. Honestly, I dreaded this class because I have never taken a calculus course before. I passed this class because the structure of the course is super transparent and it's always clear what you have to study to pass. Just practice the material a lot.
There were way too many mylabs assigned. Calls you out in class if you leave early or on your phone for a few seconds. The lectures are okay but often times it's hard to understand him.
Has fair grading scale with an A=81%+ and B=65-80%. Funny guy that is not afraid to call you out in the middle of lecture to tell you to put your phone away or feet off the chairs.12 HW probs a week so not bad. Final counts as 30% of your grade and both exams count for another 30%. If you miss a couple of days and he drops a letter grade so prepare
He is an extremely fair professor. Everything on exam study guides will be on an exam. He also has two extra credit opportunities. One is a presentation of a mathematician, the other is to learn and solve a rubiks cube. He sometimes does have power trips and goes off on tangents but it is bearable. He is also very funny.
Professor Kobotis was a very fair professor who had a clear grading scale (81+ was an A, 65-80% a B). I am not the best at math (which as a STEM major, yikes!) but lessons were transparent and easy to understand. He has answer keys for midterm exams, final exams, and quizzes that are similar to the ones you'll take. Make sure to practice!
Math 210 is a very well designed course. even if kobotis is not your instructor you can trust that as long as he is the course coordinator the expectations and course layout us very clear and easy to learn as long as you give it a good but of effort. exams are near identical to practice tests and HW. Use this!
Class is easy and the material is easy. Never paid attention in class and did well. Although the course is easy he on the other hand has made me dislike the class. He's very uptight and rude. Unlike other professors who understand that we're adults and treat us as such, he treats people with condescension. He also over complicates stuff.
Genuinely an amazing math teacher. Lectures are captivating and he explains everything so well. For Math 170, there was a pretty substantial amount of homework but it was easy. I sometimes asked my TA to solve the problems during discussion if I was stuck. Do the exam review guides! If you feel confident in those, you'll do amazing on exams!
He is the BEST math teacher! His lectures are really interesting. We had 2-3 homework per week and 1 quiz per discussion. Pay attention in class and you'll do fine. The exams were SUPER easy, they are the same as his study guide, except he only changes a few numbers. He gives extra credit if you know how to solve a Rubik's cube.
Tends to overcomplicate almost every topic taught. He's also very hard to understand because his explanations are very vague. He also tends to get offended when answering questions during lecture. I 100% say that his TA's teach the course rather than himself...
Very direct and expects you to be good at what is presented. Use the study guides for tests and do the homework for an easy A. My only issue is how much attitude he gives when answering students as if we should be reading his mind. He had us learn how to solve a rubix cube for easy extra credit and he is also quite an interesting guy. Alsono phones
As course coordinator, Kobotis has been teaching this course for 5+ years. He knows the material like the back of his hand. The Mylabs should be scrapped, they don't relate to lecture material and are brownie points that don't contribute much gradewise. During exams, he tensely stares at students for long periods to make sure no one is cheating.
Despise his power trips and big ego, he has a reputation. Beware of him walking up to you and calling you out over nothing. I watched him accuse people, then actually he laughs as if that wasn't embarrassing for him. If you got Covid or are sick, he'll force you to come to class anyways. Okay class though. Just avoid the professor.
I have a high A in this class without attending lecture ONCE, but beware that your lack of attendance will drop ALL grade letters. So I dropped it at the end-of-semester. My advice, just take calculus online in Chicago Community Colleges for a lower price. Also Kobotis was rude until I gave him my letter of accommodations. Proves that he's biased.
Kobotis is a Good Professor who very clearly cares about mathematics, but he is quite strict about classroom rules (Gum, whispering, leaving early, being on your phone etc.) and is known to call students out during class and presentations.
Kobotis is an amazing professor who clearly loves mathematics. Most classes are lectures and there are quite a few quizzes (really easy, pretty much memorization). There are two group papers and presentations, and there are quite a few movie reviews as well. It is really easy to get an A as long as you do your work. I would for sure take him again.
Kobotis is an amazing professor. He has some rules (no talking, no chewing gum), but they are totally reasonable as you go to lecture to learn. Class overall was fairly easy. Homework is easy (if you need help on it, look at the exam guides!). Exams are also easy if you look at the exam guides for review.
Definitely take Kobotis for Calc 3
Professor Kobotis knows his stuff, sure, but he thinks his knowledge gives him an excuse to be rude and condescending to students. I tried to get help from him after class and I could not believe how rude he was. Only take his class if you are an emotional masochist.
This professor has been course coordinator of Calculus 3 for over 10 years. Everything becomes muscle memory for him. In lecture he skips steps and just writes the solutions because he's taught it so much. His exams are copy and paste from previous semesters with values switched. I don't like his serious demeanor and he has an arrogance to him.
I have mixed feelings about this professor. He is extremely strict in the classrooms, attendance is mandatory, condescending tone, etc. However, I believe he really cares about his students and want them to succeed. His classroom rules are only there for you to focus and pay attention.
I took this prof because everyone said he was great, it turned out to be both true and false. He is great at calculus, though he is terrible at applied linear algebra. He skips steps, doesn't explain concepts well, makes many mistakes, repeatedly complains, and more. Avoid him for Math 310.
Kobotis runs a tight ship, but engaging with his system pays off. Lectures are worth attending to understand the concepts. Supplementing with resources like chatGPT and unstuckstudy AI can really help make this course manageable.
Good professor who knows what he is doing and is passionate about what he teaches. He often provides examples in class which can help you understand the concept more and he cracks occasional jokes. However, he does often call students out for chewing gum, talking, whispering, or being on your phone which got very annoying. Very solid professor.
I think that Professor Kobotis is a great professor, what he teaches in lecture directly reflects what is on the homework, quizzes, and exams. I also think he was great at explaining concepts and answering questions. The only thing is that it got annoying how he would call out people in class for the dumbest things like being on their phone.
Such an annoying professor, always gets bothered by everything. I have never met another professor who takes the time out of lectures to call people out for being in their phone or being seated a certain way. Do not recommend, and would not take again!
He can be a bit harsh especially if you're on your phone, talking, or putting your feet on a chair. He'll take time out of class to talk about these things. But he's an incredible and very clear lecturer. He gives great examples in class and answers questions very well. He's overall a brilliant instructor.
Honestly a great professor, he can make the class laugh while providing a good teaching experience, just don't get on his bad side and everything will be fine
I enjoyed his class a lot. He makes it clear that he wants all his students to succeed and his actions and teaching reflects that 100%. Just go to lecture, PLEASE go to discussion, and do the easy homework assignments. If you do all these things, the exams will be super easy!
Kobotis craves power and control, enforcing strict rules that create a good learning environment. However, he's rude and treats people poorly, acting like an emotionally immature parent. After just two days with him, he seems like a good teacher but an impolite person who yells when you don't immediately follow his instructions.
I get it with the cell phone policy and all of that, but if I'm just taking notes on my IPad, I have to sit in the front 3 rows to do that or I get called out for it? Pretty dumb rule but oh well I guess. I'll just be sticking to notebook for this year.
dr. kobotis is one of the few professors who actually cares about his students. he indeed has some rules that may seem a little odd, like not chewing gum or resting your feet on the seats, but realistically, as long as youre a respectful and decent human being, you're gonna be just fine. if you behave, he's a cutie pie! loved him and his class
All i did was show up, jot down notes during lecture, do the homework, and passed easily with an A
Like the other reviews say, he is strict. But if you're respectful and do whats expected he's fair. He prepares you well for the quizzes/exams, we had two exams and a one question quiz almost every lecture. Homework was worth ~25% and overall massive curves.
He is strict and expects a lot of respect. He will call you out for whispering or being on your phone. However, he creates short and detailed videos that are extremely helpful for each rule and problem, which is soo beneficial for exam preparation.
Kobotis gives really good lectures. He is also the only professor who seems to actually enforce his rules. If you talk/use headphones/scroll during lecture be prepared for a death sentence. AMAZING TAs (Ryan Carpenter). The only downsides to this class were the MyLabs (useless) and it being 8AM. also he tells u EXACTLY whats on the midterms lol.
He loves Mathematics and hates the movie good will hunting.
He's a great professor who wants his students to do well. He lays out his rules very clearly in the syllabus and on the first day of lecture. Is he strict with his rules on phones and computers? Yes, but he laid that out in the syllabus and all he asks is for your attention and respect in lecture. All lectures, study guides are all uploaded.
in person lectures are not helpful, he vaguely explains the material and will waste 5 minutes of class time if he is 'interrupted' (someone checking their phone), also rambles about being disliked and a bit rude. video lectures and practice problems are uploaded almost daily, and the exams are exactly like the given study guides. grading is relaxed
Professor Kobotis gives feedback on graded assignments before they're due and is an easy grader. He doesn't require note-taking, as his lectures are structured like storytelling. He is, however, extremely strict with assignment submissions and will not accept them even if they are a bit late, so either notify him beforehand or complete them early.
He will literally hold your hand through the entire course and lead you to passing with an A. I'd recommend watching the lectures beforehand, and then going to class. Very straightforward and easy to understand. He's quite strict during lecture but it is understandable, not to mention he's funny. Shout out to his amazing TA, Ryan Carpenter.
