Very thorough during lectures, engaging and helpful. Attendance is taken through clicker questions so show up. Must do homework though AleKs website, can be frustrating but will offer help if you ask and offers AleKs help sessions. Before each exam he offers many group study opportunities. If you apply yourself you will pass with a good grade.
He is not great at explaining the harder concepts. It is clear that he is a new teacher. During the second exam, the class average was below a 60% and he didn't even go over the exam after. Attendance is taken through iClicker questions, there are help sessions if you need them. Overall I wouldn't recommend unless you are naturally good at Chem.
I really did enjoy having him as an instructor. He's really witty and crazy about hands on activities and group work. However, this class is extremely hard and I think he moves a little too fast, especially for his test grade averages being so low. Take a lot of notes and ask questions immediately when confused. Otherwise you'll fall behind
Pretty funny, lectures aren't too boring. He moves at a fast pace and expects you to keep up. The exams are tough, Exam #2 had a class average of 59%... Homework is done through AleKs. I wouldn't recommend him, he's not completely clear when explaining and moves too fast.
The class itself is what is hard. If you really apply yourself and attend his office hours or the study sessions before tests, you will pass. You just have to apply yourself fully. This is not a class you can slide by doing nothing. You actually have to TRY. His cuteness is just a bonus!!! He is also very funny and will help you if you ASK.
The class its self is really hard. He is very willing to help but he goes through everything pretty fast in class and I'm always left confused so if you don't go to his office hours or find someway to get help you fall way behind. You have to do Aleks which is the devil. Almost all your grade is based on the 4 exams, but there isn't a final.
Good professor. Really funny
Dr. Depperman is hilarious and awesome. However, If you're not naturally good at chemistry, this class will be stressful. Depperman is smart and he knows his stuff, but he goes through it so fast with little explanation. ALEKS IS TERRIBLE. He gives EC and he tries his best to help you pass the class. If you show up and try your best, you'll pass.
Be ready to work your tush off! This was, by far, the most difficult class I've taken so far. Dr Depperman is a bit intimidating, but if you can get over that he's willing to help... if somewhat grudgingly at times. It's easy to feel stupid in the face of his very obvious intelligence, but remember this is a 100 level class and he has a PhD.
Ezra is an awesome guy, every lecture he was funny, clear, and spent the lecture going over problems students had regarding the chapter. You gotta read, do the aleks, and be sure if you're not clear make use of the muddy point questions required before each lecture. Looking forward to any other chem class I can take that he offers.
Where to begin. Truthfully, Depperman is pretty intimidating the first few weeks of class, but as the semester goes on, he gets more approachable. Even though he looks intimidating, if you talk to him 1on1 and its clear you are making an effort, he will help you out. He is a good teacher, but a hard one too, and a bit of an ass sometimes, funny too
Dr. Depperman is a great teacher. Make sure you do the reading assignments, since he starts each class by going over student questions on the one due the night before, and then continues the lecture. He's more than willing to answer questions and help out with whatever is needed. The tests are challenging, but graded on a curve, so it's manageable.
Depperman's tests are much harder than other CHEM professors, but he prepares you well for future science classes because of it. Pay attention in class, do your ALEKS, do the practice exams he provides, make sure you understand the material, and you will pass.
Lectures weren't too long, but he moved though material way to fast. It wasn't bad at the beginning of the semester but once we got into more difficult subjects the pacing was way too fast. Tests are tough but if you follow the practice exam you should be okay. Use your notecard wisely!! Don't forget to add things from previous tests.
Lectures are fast, but thats what you get in a 121/122 combined class. Aleks will be a huge part and can save you or destroy you. So, do it. Also, participation is a must. He defiantly makes everything simple and easy to understand. I would defiantly recommend Dr. Depperman.
THIS CLASS WAS PROBABLY THE HARDEST CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN IN MY LIFE!! HE EXPECTS YOU TO KNOW THE MATERIAL AND HE ONLY GOES OVER THE QUESTIONS ON MUDDY POINT.
Depperman is made for higher level Chemistry courses. He doesn't understand that not all his students have a PhD in Chemistry like he does. He needs slow down! I recently did the mock exam 4 for test 4 and did really well. When I came into the test, half the material wasn't even on it that we had learned (No formal charge q's, shape q's, etc)
DO ALEKS. As much as you can and always, it's 20% of your grade, but careful because every lecture when someone asks about ALeKs, "don't listen to ALeKs, it's BS and not how we do it." So, as useful as it is, it isn't at all. Read the textbook, take good notes, arrive on time(free attendance points) and GOOD luck on the test. luck is all you have
He really knows his stuff about chemistry. I think he has trouble dumbing it down for us students though. Sometimes he went too fast for it to sink in. He does give you chances for saving your grade with hw and quizzes unlike all the other UNM Ochem profs. Be sure to do lots of practice problems in the book, and his study guides are just like tests
He lectures as if you have already been exposed to the material so if you took AP Chem/Chem 121 before, you'll be fine. If not, try to find outside help. He also does clicker questions, which brought my grade down due to not showing up, but if you do well on everything else, you're set. The tests are harder and not like the practice ones.
Easy to reach and funny. Lectures are based on questions from homework. Material is somewhat difficult, but he'll answer your questions. Most of the work for class is done online. My emails have all been answered the same day, sometimes the same hour!
The class can be difficult if you don't have much chemistry experience. Although it is confusing, he uses humor to clarify tough topics and always answers questions with clarity.
He seems intimidating at first, but just go to his office hours and ask for help. He's such a nice guy and does whatever he can to help you pass the course. Its not his fault the class is so hard, but he does try to make it as easy as possible! Definitely one of the best professors that will go out of his way to help you understand the material.
Gen Chem is a HARD class. Depperman wants all of his students to succeed and is really approachable. This class challenged my limits and you have to work your hurt off for a good grade. He teaches at a much higher level than the other Chem professors and is very specific. Do Aleks!!! Just work hard and you'll do ok! (:
Dr. Depperman's tests aren't awful - the reviews he gives for them are super helpful. His lectures are interactive and he keeps them interesting - his notes are easy to follow. My main tip would be to stay on top of the ALEKS hw - everyone will tell you that and you should listen. Not doing all of the ALEKS hw is why I didn't get an A.
I took Organic Chem with him over the summer. If you can take him for Ochem do it. Way better than belles. He drops 3 hw grades, one exam, and 3 clicker grades. He's pretty funny and his exam reviews are super close to the actual exam.
Took him for OChem and loved him as a professor. Hes really helpful and friendly and started off the class with an Austin Powers joke right from the get go which was great.
He doesnt know how to teach. He goes too fast, reviews nothing, doesnt answer questions seriously, and patronizes you in office hours. Everything I learned I had to teach myself. Do not recommend to anyone ever unless they like to cry.
Great instructor. He is very personable and if he sees you are trying and cares, he will work with you.
Loved this guy. He went super fast through his lectures but he did post them online which was nice. Tests were not terrible and pretty similar to the practice tests given. Alot of padding on the grade and in my opinion he was much better than Whalen and Belew. Had a lot of office hours too.
He was rude and unclear, as well as being not helpful when answering questions.
He's funny and easy to talk to, but his lectures are a little scattered. If you have to do the online program Aleks, good luck. The tests are extremely hard, and much different from the lectures and homework. There is lots of padding on the grade however, if you go to class and participate and complete the homework assignments.
Dr. Depperman is an awesome professor. He makes lecture fun and interesting. He goes through the lectures a little fast but there's so much to cover that he has to. Reading before class is essential and if you don't put in the work, don't expect to get a good grade. He's helpful during office hours and responds to emails very quickly.
He is a good teacher, lectures are heavy he covers a variety of matelrial and is unclear of where some numbers or names come from he knows everything by heart but doesnt explain well where it came from . Practice exams are nothing to the actual exam!
His lectures are unlike any other professors. He doesn't just lecture, he makes it a interactive environment that makes things fun to learn. I would've never gotten through chem without this guy!
Lectures are engaging and interactive. Definitely get out what you put into his classes. He does move fast but provides a lot of extra resources, so don't hesitate to reach out. It will only keep building. CHEM121 is a tough class but Dr. Depperman definitely makes it better.
felt the practice exams helped in this class
This class wasn't as hard as expected to be and he was really funny. The study guide was extremely helpful when preparing for the exams and he lets you use notecards. There was a lot of work to do for ALEKS. As long as you go to class, pay attention and take notes, the class should be easy.
Dr. Depperman relies heavily on Aleks which is very hard to complete on time. He is very lecture heavy and does not lie when he says this class will take 7 times the work of a regular class. You will spend hours on Aleks. If you don't go to lecture you will be lost. His tests are very difficult. You need to devote your life to this class to pass.
He's a great OChem prof. He takes his time to teach and answer questions. Very approachable in office hours. Tries his hardest to prepare you for his exams. Makes lecture funny and interesting. The reason people complain is because he teaches chemistry, which is hard for most people. Your ability to learn the material shouldn't reflect badly on him
Gen chem 1 is hard as is, but Dr. Depperman tries to make sure you understand everything. While there is a lot of homework and class participation, the exams in his class will make or break your grade. Don't expect anything higher than a B in his class if you're not willing to study A LOT for the exams.
Tests are extremely hard, class average was a 59 which he made a point of saying was 20 points higher than his last class. Curve was only 3 points. Homework on Wiley, better than aleks but is the same amount of time consuming. >10 hours a week reading, >3 hours homework a week, and good luck studying for unlearned material. He lectures from book.
He was a fine professor but he was not a good person. You couldn't ask a question without fear of being made to feel stupid. He is very intimidating and not willing to help you outside of class. His tests were pretty challenging but if you kept up with the homework, which there was a lot of, you'd end up doing okay.
He does a good job explaining organic chem. I think he is intimidating at first, but as long as you are actually diligently working to understand, he is not so bad. He will not respect you and it will be harder to get help if you are not willing to work. I learned a lot from him. Lots of homework, but holds you accountable and overall helpful.
You have to read the book and teach your self most of the material. Depp does not explain the material well, goes over test material very quickly in class. It is a hit or miss for office hours, some days he is very nice and others he can be very rude and unapproachable.
Depperman tries to make his lectures interactive and engaging, but relies heavily on time consuming online tasks. Sometimes it feels like you're teaching yourself a lot of the material. There is always a lot of resources for help. Go to mock exams/exam review sessions and you'll be fine.
Professor Depperman sets the high bar as the basic text book understanding. He reads the text book section by section and rarely goes into depth. This is good if all you want is the credit but if you are a STEM major trying to gain a breadth of understanding I would try and find a different professor who lectures more with more depth.
Wiley is easy to use and easy to do. His exams are hard but seriously just do Organic Chemistry whenever you have the chance. Its not hard to understand but make sure you understand. Every section builds on the last so if you're not getting it, then don't suffer. He's kind of tough to follow in class. You'll teach yourself.
Really funny, nice guy. You have to work for a good grade but he does his best to help you understand any concepts. Expect to use the textbook a lot; he does what he in lecture can but the concepts take a lot of extra time to understand.
Chem 301 is the most unorganized class I have ever taken. Professor Depperman hand writes his notes during class and his handwriting is terrible. Wiley (the textbook) is also super unorganized. Since the professor and book are so scattered it is really difficult to do well and you end up teaching the majority of the material to yourself.
Depperman is a fantastic professor. I had to take this class twice, but I'm really glad I did. I am confident moving into Organic Chem 2 because of Depperman's clear teaching style and copious studying resources. He spread his office hours out to be more accessible, and was extremely quick at answering emails. Definitely take his class if you can!
Dr. Depperman is an awesome, funny guy. Ochem is going to be hard no matter what, but he does his best to teach it. Lectures can be a bit hard to follow since there is so much material, but being thorough with textbook work will help you succeed. Very accessible and flexible.
Dr. Depp is great! He is well prepared for each lecture, and posts everything he is going to cover before hand so you can bring it to lecture to make taking notes easier. He is also hilarious, which is fun! The exams are very similar to the practice test and he takes an entire lecture to review. I would take a class with him again for sure!
Dr. Depperman was a great teacher that always made an effort to keep us interested in the material through jokes or participation. That being said, his lectures are hard to follow if you haven't read the book, as he moves quickly and his writing is sloppy. Grading depended on ALEKS, Smartworks, clicker questions, and exams (which he curved).
Depperman is a cool guy but he really can't teach. His messy unclear writing coupled with even more unclear verbal instruction is a recipe for failure. He goes over topics way too fast. He scrolls his notes down as he goes so there's no time write it down. A 50% average should be indicative of changes needing to be made in curriculum.
Depperman is a challenging teacher. He likes to push his students. He is fast paced and has very sloppy handwriting. His exams are often more difficult than other chemistry professors. You need to be willing to place the effort in order to pass his class.
I felt he went much too fast over too much material it was really hard to keep up with and write notes. Before you finish writing notes he will have clicker questions. Everything felt rushed and I know the people who sat around me felt the same. Was not my learning style.
This professor assigns ALEKS (which is due every Saturday) and Smartwork5 from the online textbook (due the day before each class) and in-class there are several clicker questions. If you do all of the work and come to class prepared the "muddy points" lecture in collaboration with the in-class worksheets/activities it's no trouble passing.
Depp is the bomb! He's funny, knowledgeable, & caring. His lectures are fast-paced but if you read the material beforehand and take your own notes, you'll be fine. His practice tests closely mirror his exams and the iClicker Q's help your grade. Yes, his handwriting is sloppy & he is intimidating but I still feel like I learned a lot this semester!
I really enjoyed this class. He's a good professor but be prepared to do a lot of work outside of class and read before hand. Office hours are a must. Definitely stay on top of the work and don't fall behind. He does clickers every class and for the most part they are easy points that you don't want to miss. He also curves exams.
I wouldn't recommend him as his lectures are fast paced, exams tough, doesn't curve that much and don't expect any extra credit opportunities. Grades depend on best 3 exams out of 4, final exam, Aleks (online HW due every saturday), Smartwork (online HW due before each class), i-clicker questions. He will "definitely" make you work for your grade.
His lectures are extremely fast-paced and not really helpful. His practice exams, however, are very close to the actual exams. He sometimes curves, sometimes doesn't. He jokes a lot during lecture and his does not always know how to pass the information down to the students. However, if you do the work, you should be able to pass.
Organic chemistry is a hard class, but Dr. Depperman tries his best to make it as enjoyable and straightforward as possible. His exams are hard, but if you practice and ask a lot of questions, they become easy. They're also very similar to the practice exams he puts up. He's a great person to chat with and learn from, so definitely go to office hrs
Will have all the resources you need. SI sessions, practice exams which are very similar to exams, quick responses to emails, CAPS, test reviews. Saves many of the difficult concepts of each test for the last couple of lectures rather than spreading it out throughout the unit. Need to stay diligent for homework and quizzes. Good grading curves.
Depperman seems like a cool person overall, but his lectures are fast-paced and he doesn't really give a lot of time to ask questions. He will often give resources that should have been given a lot earlier just before exams forcing you to try and cram information in a few days before his exams.
Dr. Depperman is very easy to talk to and always willing to help when you don't understand a concept. He is understanding and obviously very hardworking. He always responded quickly to e-mail and gave beneficial and constructive feedback on all assignments. No final exam. Tests are hard, but sometimes he curves. Work hard and you'll do well.
He goes way too fast and doesn't explain things well. He did listen to feedback and tried to help, he responds to emails quickly. DO THE HOMEWORK AND PARTICIPATION!!! If you do well on these, you'll pass even if you do bad on the exams. Do the homework ON TIME! It helps a lot. Exams were terrible no matter how hard I studied.
Dr. Depp is one of the coolest teachers ever, but he is hard. I learned a lot from his lectures but they are very fast and hard to keep up with. He has homework due every weekend that are harder than what you are actually doing, but if you keep up with it you'll be fine. Tests are hard, study and understand because he'll test your knowledge.
I loved this professor a lot. He was very clear on what is due and what is required from each student. You listen to him and do all the readings, you will pass with at least a B. I thought the class would be impossible with COVID but he made everything accessible and was always the first to answer questions even if they were dumb questions.
Dr. Depperman is really good! Organic chemistry is by far the hardest class I have taken, but he made it fun and worthwhile. Has a great attitude about his teaching, always willing to help and give extensions and is great with engaging with students. The class is VERY hard, but if you put enough work in you will do well with Dr. Depperman.
The group activities are brutal when you have a lazy group, but otherwise, Depp was awesome. Lectures go very quickly and you need to make sure the reading is done BEFORE class. Get the participation quizzes and problem sets done as soon as he opens them up. Ask questions and take detailed notes and you'll do well.
Does not clearly outline expectations and punishes you for it. Seems like a cool guy but not a good teacher.
Proff Depperman is super nice. I've had some issues this semester with my mental health and he's been great with giving me an extra day to complete assignments, which not a lot of teachers do. He gives you time to review for exams, and sets apart time in the course for test prep. He genuinely cares abt his students and it shows
Dr. Depperman was a great professor for General Chemistry 1. He goes in depth with the lecture material and answers all questions you may have. He is willing to work with you and wants to see you succeed. His class is difficult, but any first STEM course will be. It is important that you focus on the readings. I highly recommend taking his class!
Dr. Depp is a phenominal teacher. He's helpful outside of class and when I had a group that wasn't involved he allowed me to change groups! He gives assigned reading and trust me, take advantage of that it will help big time! He does help students with flexibility. Such an awesome and well knowledgable teacher! Office hours really helped alot too!
excessive amounts of work. I'e passed higher level chemistry with B's. It's only this professor I had a hard time with. Also he is not understanding if you have any family deaths come up don't expect any extensions.
Chemistry was a topic that I struggled with a lot and Depperman was amazing at breaking down difficult concepts and problems in way that I would easily understand and learn. I started his class expecting to fail but I did very good in his General Chemistry class.
I liked Professor Depperman at first. He seemed kind and understanding at the beginning of the semester, but as it went on he seemed to care less and less. When we took the second exam, 20/180 people passed, and I was furious. When he happened to hear me criticizing him with one of my classmates, he publicly humiliated me. I dropped after that.
Chemistry is always going to be a hard call but Depp is an awesome teacher. Explains things in very helpful was, but it's still a pretty difficult class.
I had a terrible chemistry background from high school and was so worried about not doing well in this class. However, his lectures were very clear and informational, and the class starts from the basics, so it is not too difficult to get lost from the start. His exam reviews are very similar to the exams, which was also a huge help.
Any time I reached out to Dr. Depperman for a problem with the course, he was quick to respond and he has offered many practice exam sessions for all his students. Competent & compassionate. You should take his classes.
This class is hard, and requires a LOT of self-discipline and outside work. If you can't manage yourself, you're going to fail. His lectures are helpful, but they are not enough if you aren't willing to put in extra time yourself. Tests are hard, but he does curve, and answers questions clearly before and after. You HAVE TO do ALEKS to succeed.
I have a part-time job that is very flexible with scheduling and they even let me do homework when we're not busy. This class takes so much time and work that it's unfeasible for anyone who has other classes and/or works. There's little curve and it's very quick paced. This is the only class I've gotten lower than C+ (I normally get As and Bs).
He's great and super understanding, his tests are straight forward, and he's definitely not trying to trick you. He replies to emails in like 3 minutes and is very sweet.
Really good professor!! Exam reviews are similar to actual exams. Must do reading assignments before class though, and attendance is practically graded with clicker questions done during each class. Take him! You will not regret it!!
I had a very difficult time in this course. Dr. Depp tends to go back on his explanations a lot which left me confused for most of the class. iClicker is used during the class a lot. The exams are pretty similar to the practice exams. All I can really say is study, study, study. He is very approachable, but there are times he gets frustrated easy.
Online course was long, but the only time i spoke with him, he was very chill and helpful.
Dr. Depp wants his students to succeed. He is super passionate, helpful, and hilarious. If you want a super easy and fun OChem class, take his. Tests are identical to practice exams, homework is always posted in advance, and he has tons of online videos - you never need to read the textbook. I never read or did PQs and still got As on all tests.
Depp is approachable outside of class and tries to make Chem easier to understand and has lectures that he also posts online and many videos. If you are not great at O-chem take him, you can still pull an A or B even if you do bad on exams in the class as long as you do all the work such as group work, homework, PQs, and participate with Iclicker.
Dr. Depp is a great guy and is very understanding. He is a VERY kind grader because tests are tough. He taught the material well up to synthesis (test 2), and then he struggled to make test material match the lectures. He gets excited and makes tests hard. Pay close attention to the synthesis section and go to office hours. I would recommend him.
If you have his MWF course there are online readings you need to do before each class. Readings are helpful for the upcoming lecture but they can be lengthy and time-consuming. There are additional weekly ALEKS objectives. Exams are difficult but he engages with students really well and practice exams are somewhat similar to what you need to know.
Incredible amount of work: muddy points, reading homework, ALEKS, iClicker, and very challenging exams. Will change how things are done with little to no notice. Lectures barely scratch the surface, might as well teach yourself. Still possible to pass the class if you do poorly in one of the above mentioned areas as long as you do everything else.
When the average score for the entire class on an exam is in the 50% range after the curve, something is wrong with the teaching method. Assigns a ton of work, but is unable to grade the assignments in a timely manner. Last week of the quarter and no one stills knows where they stand. Take the class somewhere else, chem dept is a disaster.
Very heavy work load; Aleks, reading assignments, clickers, muddy points and exams with reviews that provided absolutely no help. Lectures and readings help somewhat but you essentially teach yourself. Overall he's chill you just have to put in some extra effort if you want to pass.
LOTS of homework: Aleks, readings, iClicker, muddy points, group work etc. Changed the grading rubric % last couple of weeks of class. This class takes time and effort outside of class, I had to get TA & tutor help. The majority of the class failed exam 3 so he began assigning group work in hopes of having our grades go up. Hard lecture, easy lab.
Lots of work outside of class. Tests were insanely difficult. I had to study for a whole week before a test (hours a day) all to get like a 70 or 80. Do your ALEKS ASAP. He is always available to email. He is a good guy just very difficult class.
A cool guy but the class is just awful. study guides won't help you on the test. I don't think there is a good instructor for chemistry here but he's better than the others. That is a very low bar though.
Ezra does not teach material, it is expected to be self taught before you arrive to class. I will say I feel so uncomfortable meeting him outside of class because he sometimes makes unnecessary comments in class and is a bit passive about it sometimes. Expect to use youtube tutors for just about everything. doesn't post answer keys to GA either!
Horrible teacher.
He is a nice guy but he gives way too much homework. And, he is the only professor for this class but I would recommend taking it for the summer because there is no final.
I don't understand why he doesn't have a better score. There is usually homework through wiley which sucks but he makes his own YouTube videos for extra help. He's also super funny and easy going. Ochem is hard in general...just do the work.
Granted he did mention he hasn't taught this class in awhile but the content was a mess. They study guides he provided did nothing when preparing for the actual exam. Heavy workload, prepared to meet with tutors to learn the content he doesn't teach.
I was so scared to take it after hearing everyone say hard it was, but he made it really accessible and we had a super good time in class. He has a fantastic sense of humor and it helped the content stick. Definitely requires outside work, but this is normal for difficult classes. Highly recommend taking it w/him- it was my fave of the semester
He was pretty good for the most part. His exams are lowkey difficult if you don't keep up with the readings. Iclickers are important and MAKE SURE TO DO ALEKS!!! I cannot stress enough how I would have ended with a B if I had just done my ALEKS when it was due. He's relatively available. His mock exams are very helpful.
If you want to get an A in organic chemistry, take Depperman. He does have a lot of homework, but it's easy and helps buffer test scores. He is a generous grader and is very clear about what goes on his exams. It mostly pulls from the group assignments. He is readily available for homework help by email. If you put in the effort, you will get an A.
Why make your life harder. Just take Dr. Diana Habel-Rodriguez's class. She offers extra credit. And exams are only 35% of your grade.
Do not recommend. Too much homework and little care for students made this an awful class.
Requires a good amount of time outside of class. Pick your group partners well. With how nonnegotiable grades were, I ended up teaching myself. If you keep up with the work this will establish a good foundation for Chemistry.
Do not recommend. Does not respond to emails and when he does his responses are short. Lots of homework. Tests are a huge amount of your grade.
Dr. Depperman is very knowledgeable and understanding towards students. Yes, this course is very vigorous and intense, and he knows that. If you put in the correct amount of effort and genuinely try to learn the material, you will be fine! I missed a few assignments, and emailed Dr. Depperman and he was kind enough to extend due dates for me.
As long as you put effort in outside of class and study a lot you can do well. He is a nice person when you put in effort and care for the subject.
Didn't see much of him online, just wanted to say that he expects a lot of homework from you. Every week you need to do a reading of usually 65 topics, Aleks 10 topics, group discussion, MLC quiz with responders lockdown, group turn in. The timelines are also weird as you start on Fridays and end on Wednesdays. Aleks is 25% of your grade.
Great professor, you can tell he is passionate about chemistry and that he puts in a lot of work for his lectures to make them easier to understand. A LOT of work, which helps you understand the material better but be ready to work hard and spend a lot of time outside of class learning concepts. Read the textbook, watch his videos and show up.
Awesome class. No issues understanding the material. Depp is very personable & understanding and wants students to succeed. If you make an effort you can pass and if you're failing by mid-term you can parachute into his easier CHEM1120.
Good professor, kinda disliked group projects but he is pretty chill and gives opportunity for extra credit and test corrections, also free textbook!
Teaching a hard class is challenging, he gave us a lot of recourses which was good.
He tends to assign reading the day before the class and then discuss the reading in class the next day. He isn't the best at explaining things but he's a funny and nice guy.
Dr. Depperman's format worked really well for me as a student. His method involves reading a free textbook and taking a quiz before each class, and then coming into class and reviewing the material. Some people might not like this method, but I found it easy. I do wish there were less group projects. Chemistry is a hard subject, so prepare to work.
Depp is a great professor! He is so clear and understandable and knows exactly what he is talking about. He has a great teaching strategy and the quiz and reading before class is no big deal. Everyone who complains about his work is just lazy. He offers great extra credit on exams and is super easy to learn from. I would take him 100 times over.
The worst Chem professor. I felt so lost in class because his lectures had very little structure to them. There were multiple pre-class readings per week and then in class he would cover maybe 1 concept from the reading in very brief detail. His exams were too hard given the amount of information he actual taught. I do NOT recommend his class.
My fav professor. Dr.Depp is great, and he makes chemistry more engaging. He is understanding towards students, especially if you attend office hours. I started going to his office hours near the end of the semester, and even during that time he put in 100% to answering my questions. He's easy to talk to. I hope to take his class again.

Going to professors for help can be intimidating, but he's easy to talk to.
A good professor, do the reading and the quiz has unlimited attempts so it kinda allows you to make mistakes so you can learn. I Despise the ALEKS software he forces you to use, but other than that the class was very informational. He also has his TA's available, and they are very helpful as well.
WORST HANDWRITING EVER, HE COULD BE THE FUNNIEST PROFESSOR BUT DOESNT MEAN HE IS A GOOD TEACHER. take this course if you want to be apart of a circus because laughter is the only thing is he good at.
Evil so evil.
Ezra's class is tough, but if you put in the effort you'll learn a lot. The workload is heavy, but he's understanding - just stay on top of it. I found Unstuck study really helpful for exam prep.
The class has a really predictable structure so assignments never come out of left field. The subject is difficult but Depperman and his TAs offer a lot of help.
Very funny & passionate about chemistry, but unfortunately doesn't explain things well. Lectures are handwritten too fast on OneNote (and often illegible). Lectures cover a small portion of very vast and complicated info. 90% self-studying if you want to do well. Exams are full of trick questions. He does provide lots of extra credit though.
So so much homework, tests very challenging. Goes on random lectures that doesn't matter. Super funny but get ready for heavy workload and stress.
His lectures can be pretty confusing, but as long as you do the readings you'll be fine
Honestly don't understand all the bad reviews. He's super funny, gives good lectures, and gives practice exams relative to what's on the actual exam. If you study and put in the work, you'll do fine. There are slight curves, so don't expect it to raise your grade too much. He'll drop your lowest score on every exam and assignment.
Dr. Depp is great. I would say attendance isn't mandatory, BUT he does lots of clickers. He's funny, caring, and I think he's a good professor. OChem is just a hard class, so make sure to practice and do all the homework. Make sure you pick reliable groupmates for the group activities. It's hard material but he sets you up for success!
I came into this class so scared because chem isnt intuitive to me (i had to parachute gen chem 1) but honestly anyone can pass this class. He does group assignments which aren't bad. His lectures are bad so you will be teaching yourself the course. GET A TUTOR!!! This is the only reason I passed the class. Good luck!
The class is generally tough—especially chemistry. I think it could improve with more engaging, live or interactive instruction rather than relying solely on asynchronous modules. The instructor seems kind and understanding (though I haven't met him in person).
Chill guy if he's in a good mood. Lectures are hit or miss on material but engaging. PQs are often long and difficult. Wiley is aight. Exams were mostly fair and barely weighted. Lots of self-study. Responsive to emails and available, but sometimes disorganized and dismissive.
He was an ok teacher. If need be, I would take him again, but I do believe the only reason I passed his class was because I attended the TA's office hours religiously. He is a very funny person, but he goes through lectures very quickly, and it is very difficult to read his handwriting. There is a lot of reading to do, and there are quizzes on it.
Amazing class, amazing professor. Would take again. Show up to class, take notes, do the readings - if you do the things you are assigned you WILL succeed and there are lots of resources!
I took this class in Fall 2024 and got an A+. Class is well taught and the professor is great. There are a lot of resources for people in chemistry, use them! Atomic Start, SI sessions - etc. use them! You will have to try. This class is hard but rewarding
Hilarious lectures. Lots of super useful office hours! Great professor, very good at teaching, difficult classes but they are very rewarding and you will learn a lot!
Depperman isn't that bad, a pretty decent guy if you look beyond some of the known allegations about his past. He will say this is the hardest class you'll take and you will struggle to pass, which is not really true. I never studied for exams and had an average of 90.
Taking CHEM1215 was definitely a challenge, but Depperman just made it harder. There is so much homework, the exams are extremely difficult, even the final seemed difficult. The times I've talked to him he was passive and even humiliated me in front of a whole auditorium. Don't to it!
Pretty chill dude. Just do the work, show up for lectures, and take the exams and you should do well in the class.
Very easy but if you need to take CHEM303 after this he will not adequately prepare you, you need to put in more effort than what is required to pass. Lots of partial credit, work together with people to get the homework done and this class will boost your gpa.
