Great English teacher. Very laid back, He just wants you to write, and make sense. Essays are 5 pages long, final essay is 6-7. Make a good arguement and you weill get an A. Just read the stories and quizzes are easy. Good Attrndence is rewarded!!!!
Very cool teacher, very laid back, just wants you to write, but stresses MLA. Follow MLA and make a good arguement and you'll do fine. 5 pages essays, 6-7 pages for the final essay, in class essay for the final. Good attendence in rewarded!!!
Very easy teacher, helpful, nice, good sense of humor, gets along with all of his students and always willing to explain. Not really a hard grader but does want his students to learn the MLA format. CHOOSE MR. BUSTOS!
He is easy going during class, but he also expects you to work hard on your essays. The topics he chooses for the essays are interesting. He expects you to have a good argument and to use MLA. Most papers are 5 pages. Take his class if you want to improve your writing skills! :-)
he is a very nice, helpful, funny, friendly. he seems really personal and cares about each student. 5 essays over the whole sem, about 5-7 pages each. in class midterm and final. pretty easy. some reading and answering questions, quizzes-but easy. graded on attendance, so cant miss more than 3 classes.

The class can be a trip, if you take the teacher to a supbliminal level.
I've had Mr. Bustos for 114, 115, and now 116. I use to hate his class. But I've realized that he's not a dip s**t. That man does know how to teach MLA, which is very helpful in the future. Don't fall asleep, even though it can get boring.
Mr. bustos is has a relax teaching style. He cares alot about MLA but does let somethings slide. Gives about 5-7 essays 5-7 pages but you could write about whatever you want about the books he assigns. The books are intresting only if you actually read them for those that dont just pay attention when the class talks about them.
I dreaded taking this class, but Mr. Bustos made it interesting with his class discussions. Very easy class just pay attention.
Mr. Bustos has been my favorite professor so far. His class is easy and interesting if you pay attention. He has a nice personality and is willing to help you if you ask for it. Another important thing to do in his class to get a good grade is participate, participate, participate. I think I'm a better writer and reader because of him.
well discussions are interesting, essays 7+ pages your grade depends on essays and mostly class participation so if you dont like writing take somebody else
I hate taking English classes, and Prof. Bustos didn't really change my mind. He's got a laid back approach to teaching, and he's pretty funny - but he goes over some of the most boring and uninteresting stuff in the textbook. I found myself praying not the fall asleep. In the end, he's a nice guy - but he doesn't make English class fun.
HIS A NICE GUY

Easy B, hard A. If you want an A I suggest you get into the discussions (they can be interesting if you participate) and finish your essays early so that he can look over them. He can be a stickler about some stuff, but it makes for a good lesson. Make sure your arguments are solid- lots of support.

Oh god, I hated him.. Seriously this guy wasnt meant to teach this class. He is by far the worst teached I've ever had, I started this class with good papers got out like the worse writer ever, I'd passed but just cuz God is big. He's boring, the class is not interesting and his grading is hard. Do not take this class with him.
Bustos is a pretty cool teacher. His class is all papers, so get ready to do a lot of reading and writing. The essay topics are kind of boring and he gives a lot of whack writing assignments (especially in the lab), but he's a nice guy and a pretty easy grader. I'd take him if i were you.
he's very easy, and open to help everyone
Mr. Bustos was a good teacher that gave students constructive critizisim. However, like any English class students should prepare for Lectures (do your reading)

Mr. Bustos is a cool teacher, however you should do the readings and be ready for everyclass, expect to read around 3-4 books in the semester, if you are a lazy person, or you work a lot, or you have too many units, or school is a secondary thing in your life, you should think about taking 116 with him.
He's very nice and made this an easy class to pass. First the way he gave out lectures were boring and second the quizzes were absolutely dreadful. Most of it was taken from the lectures and about a quarter of it we had to memorize. As for the essays they were alright. Take his class if you think you'll pass.
I needed to take the final early becuase I had to have heart surgery before the semester was over and he told me I would have to take the F or come take the final. I was gonna be in the hospital how could I take it? Does not care about his students. I had to retake the course and I got an A with a different teacher. Horrible, DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!!
He is a nice teacher who wants his students to become better writers.Final and mid-term exams were in-class essays, luckily evrbdy had a topic picked & practiced at home.A lot of homework from the textbook, but only some was collected randomly.ENG 114 is hard core, however,F.Bustos prepares you well for ENG 115.I know how to use MLA very good now.
Genuinly wants his students to become better writers. If you're only gonna take English because it's a requirement and you don't plan on trying to learn anything, i'm warning you do not take this class. He makes you do tons of typed homework that he MIGHT collect. It's a lot of hard work, but I myself really appreciate the experience.

I warn anyone that has to take English 116! Do NOT take his class. The reading is insane, the essays are insane, and he is insane. He really wants his students to become better writers and thinkers but the work load is impossible if you work or have a life like a normal person.
No variety in the texts he required, every story was about a clash between a Latin culture and a European one. It got old quick. He isn't the hardest teacher around, but not the easiest. Lots of work, none of it is very difficult but some he never even collects.
This guy is a weirdo. I dont know what to say. As with all eng. classes theres a crap load of writing and work. Just do the work and you'll pass. He can be very frustrating b/c he never collects the work or will randomnly. His method is slacked, but you do learn its a good class to take if you need an english refresher. ALOT ALOT of writing!Laidbac
I never would have passed ENG 114 if it weren't by what I learned during his class; great Teacher very challenging and interesting class. I recommend him to everyone who is taking ENG 71 up to ENG 116.
He is great. You can tell that he loves teaching. He gives easy assignments and the exams are really easy.
had him for 114 also.ALOT of writing and critical thinking he collects work rarely & randomnly. laid back teacher. just do the work and always be prepared to turn it in cuz u never know. Also he requires a crap load of books.its all reading, writing, writing, critcal thinking, over and over.does help you to jog your mind. takehim if you need b ready 2wo
I took his class last spring.... I was very close to a C but ended up getting a D cuz of class participation and attendance. Although I failed the class I decided to re-take it with him (after all, I liked his George Lopez style) I was hoping to get a B at least but I got a C instead (all cuz of tardiness and absences!!) He's hard and gives lots of
"Give your insights on the story". Imagine 4 essays at least 5-8pgs each on that prompt everytime. Do not take his class if you are somewhat intellegent. If you feel like you are a decent witer dont taqke his class cause youll kill yourself trying to please this guy.
He called it "HARDCORE 116" so you can only imagine. He is a great teacher though, very helpful and funny. His classes flew by. A lot of writing, reading and HOMEWORK. he picks it up randomly tho. I would take him again
I took him for creative writting he put down all my work. I shared my poetry and even the stuff i have in books and i think he was jelous kind of sad to have a professor like that instead of helping you and saying congrats he doesnt
i took mr. bust for english 115 and he was kind of hard., i ended up getting a B he's a hard grader you need to provide many samples, he grades he's students like if they have a ph d in english., but just try you best, ask for help, and do the extra credits and you will be fine :)
class is really easy, just keep up with the essays and u'll be just fine. a lot of opportunities to have extra credit, easy quizzes, i got an A in his class totally recommend him
His class can be fun, but he is not so willing to explain or help. Also buying his book is pointless aside from helping him earn money!
He tries to be helpful but doesn't always understand what you are asking. Best if you ask a classmate for help. Also with Attendance, he doesn't necassarily require it, but he gives out extra credit and points to the on time and "always there" students. Hope this helps!
Took him for English 116. You write ALOT of essays in this class. Alot of reading as well. He grades essay's very harsh! You must go to class to pass the course!
I expected to learn to write fiction as stated in the class catalog. What I got was a mediocre professor who didn't follow the class objectives. EVERYDAY we would sit in a circle and critique. CRITIQUE. CRITIQUE!! I learned more from my classmates than the instructor. Not recommended, unless you already write and like solely constructive criticism.
He is really hard. He doesn't explain himself very good. Also he made us buy 5 books for which we only used 3, and not all of them completely. He did not grade his essays very well, and his comments were really poor. I went to the writing center, so they can help me and he did not cared. I don't know what he wanted. What is his point.
One word: horrible professor! He grades extremely difficult on the essays. Had to buy like 5 books, alot of reading, writing, no time to slack of in this course. Would not recommend. He is not helpful and is not very approachable.
Fun and relatively easy class.
Class is generally easy if you pay attention, but the professor is not clear at all on due dates which tends to be annoying. Also seems like a kind of dgaf professor who just wings his class without any attempt at a lesson plan. Overall I'd give him a 2, we also had to buy 6 textbooks and only used 4, not to mention hardly at all.
The last class I took was with Mr Bustos, then I left Southwestern College due to personal reasons. I went to another college and what I learned with Mr Bustos was so helpful that I was able to skip all reading classes and most English ones at my new college. Besides, his sense of humor makes time fly. Thank you so much Mr Bustos!!!.
It's a really fun class!, he is a great teacher, you do need to buy several books, you do write multiple essays based on the books so its really helpful to do the readings on time, his notes aren't organized, but he will help you if needed, i do recommend his class!
I love his class. I learned a lot ,the things I know about writing is because of him .i would take him again :) cool cool
If you take him be prepared to break your printer. He make you waste paper by making you print like 5 copies of every paper you write. He also makes you buy a book he wrote with another professor and is also tough on grading. AVOID by ALL MEANS
He is a very nice guy, but he does want you to work. 4 essays and 1 in-class essay, and A LOT of reading. But he makes class interesting with the discussions. If you are lazy, don't take this class. :)
He is a very funny guy; however, his class is not that easy, a lot of writing and reading. You have to read 2 novels and make an essay of each, also a lot of poems. Other than that I think he is a good teacher
Mr.Bustos is not a bad teacher really, he just comes off as kind of rude and unapproachable. He needs to better clarify the assignments and what he expects from you as a student. He gives out excessive amounts of homework, and honestly i didn't learn much from his class. Mediocre teacher at best, should of called the class ''Hispanic History 116''
I have always loved English classes but Prof. Bustos has definitely taken the cake on making this the least interesting class ever. It's only the second week of school and I always hope to find a "Cancelled Class" slip on the door. If you want an English teacher who makes things incredibly boring, this is the class for you!
Although this class was sort of boring, I actually learned a lot and became a better writer :) There are a couple of essays that we had to write about from various texts, so it is important to catch up on the readings. Do all of the assignments and attend every class meeting. Put effort in all the work. There is also a lot of group work.
Hated him, by far the worst teacher I have ever had. Made everything hard for no given reason. He does the opposite of what you learn to do in High school. Biggest mistake of college yet. Don't know how he is still a teacher .
Grades hard and feedback doesn't make any sense, also gives excessive work. Lectures and notes are unclear and disorganized. Will make you print copies of everything. Feels like a high school course with attendance taken every class, group work, and packets to turn in at the end of a work week. My patience was worn thin.
I wasted so much ink and paper during this class. Overall he isn't a bad person, but as a professor he explains blackboard way too much and makes the class boring. Expect to write a story or poem one right after the other.
I took him for Eng114 and Eng 115, definitively I will take him again for ENG116, if you do all your work and you put dedication to your essays; is an easy A. He is very accessible, extra credit (If you ask for it). Very funny and friendly
This has been the most exhausting class I have ever taken. His ways of doing hw and in class activities become repetitive and boring. He is a very tough grader, also, get ready to write A LOT, he assigns a new essay every week or two. Expect to have heavy amounts of hw EVERYDAY. Your printer will ran out of ink, you're expected to PRINT EVERYTHING
prof. Bustos is actually a good guy, really funny. The big problem in his class is that he makes you read A LOT! and there is so much homework, you will not rest honestly, the homework is basically the same assignments different contexts but there will be lots of writing, essays, debates. He is a really nice guy, if you need help just talk to him.
He gives a tremendous amount of homework, discussion boards, essays. You learn a lot but if English is not your major, it aint worth it. He is definitely not a fair grader. I wouldnt take his class again.
I took him for English 115 and 116, while his class does have a lot of homework you truly do walk out a better writer, the books and readings you do have to do with current issues and things that are still relevant and they're really interesting, class isn't hard at all you just have to put in the time, he also really cares about his students.
He's a good professor, who isnt a very heavy grades, as long as you do your assignments on time you should get an A. Although he has quiet the ammount of homework
One of the best professors at SWC. He does give a lot of HW and you have to read a lot. It pays off in the end because you become a better writer. I would recommend him to any and everyone looking for a great class to take. He is also very funny.
It was a little difficult if you expect college to not be homework oriented. Yes, theres a good amount of homework, but the topics we had to write about and read about were interesting and relevant to us today. He will work with you and help you if you need the help, he gives feedback and wants you to do well. Overall, what a professor should be.
This teacher is super amazing. Super caring If you are Puente student prepare for the drum circles. All in all this person is so nice, he can picky about the work cited its but its for all good reasons. This teacher very respected, throughout the community. Its not a easy class, but its fun, you become a writer and you might cry. Worth it.
not a good English person but I got a 97% overall. does help you improve your writing. do the work and you should get an easy A. He does take a while to grade and loves music. and gives out A LOT of ec and A LOT of work, but TIME MANAGEMENT. trust the process
Bustos is very unorganized and underqualified as an English professor. Do not take this class if you value your time and education, he never grades assignments on time and does not provide feedback unless you show up to office hours. The focus on this class is too strong on poetry and Mexican history that the class lacks actual guidance on English.
For Puente students you dont have a choice but he is funny. Alot of work will be overwhelming for college freshman. drum circles are fun extra credit. I would take again for sure but just a little to much HW without understanding or little remorse
As an english professor he lacks the true essence of the topic. We learn more about Mexican history, art and poetry than basic english writing methods. I have learned more from my HS english teachers and feel as though his teaching is over complicated and not clear. He uses different terminology and creates useless assignments that do not help.
It's a creative writing class so get ready to write: you'll submit work about five times per week, at least. Don't expect much feedback on your writing from him. He is truly training you to learn to do your own edits. Pay attention to Discussion Board due dates - it is easy to get confused! You'll log out a better writer.
Prepare yourself for a lot of reading and self-teaching. Professor Bustos does not directly teach you any of the class' concepts, so prepare to do plenty of research on your own to understand the different genres of writing for homework/discussion. Oh, and you also will not be receiving any feedback on your work.
Was very unorganized and crammed in a lot of work with a couple of weeks of the semester left. Cool guy but not a cool professor
You're basically teaching yourself the class material. If you submit your homework late, your grade will go down little by little. He assigns alot of homework that you'll have to complete every day. Sometimes you'll have 2 or 3 discussion board posts to complete that week.
Do not take this class if you work full time! I thought this was an eight week class bc of how much work there was. When I communicated with him about my work schedule, he could care less. This class is a lot of work, but if you think you can do it, go for it! I couldn't keep up and still got a B! Lol.
If you value your time, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! You are teaching yourself throughout the whole semester. There's a ridiculous amount of homework and you do alot reading. He doesn't give feedback & he is a very tough grader. He has no regard for the fact that you have other classes. This was my first & last time taking his class!!!
He is not a bad teacher as many others, but he is the kind of people that talks a lot but doesn't really say anything (I don't know if I can explain myself). Once you finish writing one essay you will have another two on the way and you better hurry up because there is no time to take a break.
You will do a lot of writing in this class and you will need to be self motivated to get the work done. I didnt mind the workload but if you are taking more than 3-4 courses this course could become overwhelming. BUT if you want to pursue writing academically or professionally, this class is a great beginners course as to what to expect.
The amount of work for this class seems overwhelming at first. However, once you are able to properly manage your time, you can easily complete every assignment. You will learn the material on your own, but he provides insightful comments on your final drafts. Definitely recommend this professor to anyone that is interested in an English degree!
Great professor, he is tough but gives extra credit opportunities.
Talks alot without saying anything at all. Be prepared to teach yourself how to basically do everything. He relies on the articles he posts on canvas to teach you. If you work full time be prepared to be busy throughout the week. He seems like a good guy but doesn't grade anything on time.
Talks to much about poetry and music
Okay I really tried to like this professor but he is not it.. His workload is unbearably unnecessary. Prepare for discussion boards every 2-3 days and responding to 2 classmates for every single one. He's a chill guy but totally not a good professor. We all have lives and his workload is way more than my other classes combined (taking 15 credits).
