An accomplished Joyce scholar and is always interested in students' opinions
He's horrible! I hated this class, and as a otherwise straight A student, I received an unfair B-.
Very, very weird guy. Expect to read a lot of James Joyce. He tends to repeat the same stories over and over. Plus, he has the weirdest smoker's cough and sometimes will go on completely random tangents. Expect to have homework every class.
If you read Joyce in hs then this class will be extremely easy as it was for me...if not...still easy--it's all (well-mostly) on Joyce...just read the books and pretend to know what ur talking about when you make up a point and he'll love you :)
very professional- excellent teacher- he WANTS his students to succeed-to understand- very very helpful-approachable.Makes himself available. He is FUN in the class and thru that the students learn- they really do- HIGHLY RECOMMENDED- he was to me too.
I have taken two of his classes thus far- and I hope to have more- wished he taught upper class- he is very intelligent and a marvelous speaker.Highly recommend him. He grades hard but is FAIR

My absolute favorite teacher freshman year! He is very into Joyce- but if you keep up with the work the class is a dream- love him!
too lazy to give syllabus. we had no idea what we were being graded on. Lousy professor though, too lazy to structure the class beyond repetitive discussions. Wasted a whole class talking about Joe Millionaire! and plays paul simon in class - its awful
he is a great teacher even though you homework everyday ....you can pass the class with flying colors. best teacher i have had!!!!!
you want to "learn"- take any of his classes- he is THAT GOOD!
Nice man. Class is easy if you read the material and do the homework. It's not much but it's a pain if you're a week behind and you have to catch up. Interesting class discussions- take him if you can.
Really nice guy and class is extremely interesting!
As long as you do the reading and questions, which takes about half an hour, its the best class ever.
Kerins is smart, funny, and really insightful. He is by far one of the best at Fordham. An A in his class is attainable as long as you do the work, go to his office at least once, and talk in class.
The best professor at Fordham! Dr. Kerins teaches you how to understand and apply literature not just read it! If you want to learn something take him, if your fine with boring and pathetic english teachers, take someone else.
awesome teacher! as long as you participate and do the readings, you're good to go. Very nice guy, loved him!
I don't know, Kerins wasn't that good. Once you get a c on your first essay, thats all he will give you after. Class participation is checked off every class, which is a pain. Really boring, I guess it was okay, but I wouldn't recommend him to people.
Good teacher. Bearable workload. Easy to participate in discussions. Go to class with a good attitude, put effort into the work, and you've got a good grade.
best teach eva!! sometimes i thought that he actually was JAMES JOYCE cause he knew sooooo much about his life and his stories in Dubliners. great class. i highly reccomend it!
Prof. Kerins is the nicest man! It is fairly an easy class, although it can be boring, you just have to go to class with a good attitude. He is very fair and helpful.
Great Teacher.Good to athletes, understands the life of a student athlete. Participate in class and you will be ok..and read the stories...they are very short and interesting.
Nice guy. Not the easiest but fair, I got a B in his class. I had him for close reading and we read one book the entire semester, but we tore that book apart though. Recommended.
really good teacher - do the readings, participate and you'll do great.
easy class overall good teacher and fair
Very nice guy, runs a good class for majors and non-majors alike. Not too easy, either. He certainly appreciates it when you participate in discussion.
all you read is dubliners, he claims to analyze the stories but just repeats himself, so an unchallenging class, there was no need to spend several class periods on each story. If you are looking for an easy class with little reading, take this class but if you want a class that is challenging, don't
this class "teaches" you to actually read and pay attention to details. I am learning more from this prof than all my others. I am applying what I have learned in this class to all my others-GREAT PROFESSOR- so very helpful-if you need help HE IS THERE FOR YOU=can't say that about the others
Kerins is the man. Even though he is the Old Josser, this guy is the best teacher at Fordham. You will learn so much from his class, and it is not that hard. However, to get an A you still have to work. If you can, TAKE HIM!
Definitely the Old Josser...teaches course based on James Joyce and knows everything there is about him and his work. As long as you do the readings (they're not that bad),participate, and pay a decent amount of attention in class you can do well.
Hw everyday, boring at times and plays favorites and will give you what you got on the first essay the whole semester
If you can get over the fact that he is, in fact, the Old Josser, this is a great class to take--I can't even count the times I found myself thankful to be in his class...Do the questions, and do yourself a favor and participate in class, it is worth the better grade you will get.
Whoever gives Kerins a bad rating should be shot. He is the best english professor out there. You learn so much in his class, he is really entertaining, and you read a story like you never have before.
if you are allergic to cigaretts or the smell of smoke- sit in the back of the class- otherwise he is pretty good. He does have that "smokers hack" but you can still understand him.
extremely boring. we had the exact same class for 2 weeks. teaches like its a sophomore high school eng. class. not stimulating. don't take him if you prefer interesting classes. only reason i didn't get an a is b/c i didn't study, put much effort into the papers, attend regularly & participate. he
Wow the post below me does not know what is up. Kerins class is unlike any other english class you will ever take. If you like to analyze a story, and talk about it, then this is the class. Joyce isn't for pansy @ss readers anyways.
Dubliners is an easy read and that's pretty much all you do. Don't bother going to office hours-big waste of time. Also, you can do really well on your papers and participate a lot, but your grade for the semester can only be as high as your highest exam- midterm+final. That kinda screwed me over
Can we say Gandolf from Lord of the Rings? lol
A very, very boring class. You will learn nothing, and even though he is an easy grader, it is the biggest waste of time. Do not take this class.
it is an easy class,i got an A in it easilly, all you read is the dubliners, and although you spend a whole semester on it you don't learn much more than you would have if you spent a week on it.he just repeats himself over and over,if you want to learn or improve your critical reading skills, don't
Kerins= James Joyce
You only read Dubliners, so don't buy anything else! Class is pretty boring because he repeats himself all the time, but he's really nice and it's such an easy class! Midterm and Final format: some ids and 2 essays, and there are 2 or 3 papers that aren't hard. I can't explain how easy it is! Easy A
soooo easy but sooooooo boring.
Very easy class. All you read is Dubliners, which is not a bad book. Two essays in the whole semester and the Midterms and finals are pretty easy too. If you miss class he always repeats everything, so it is easy to catch up. I definitely recommend, it is an easy A if you read the book.
Kerins is by far my favorite professor at Fordham. I have taken both Close Reading and Poetry with him. Both classes were amazing. The class itself had a decent workload, but overall he was more than fair. Also participation counts, so make sure you talk. By far one of the best classes at Fordham, and definitly the best professor!
Nice guy and all, but probablly the least accomplished english teacher here (and he is 65 years old, i hope he writes something before the grave). He can't communicate, and if he disagrees with you your screwed. Also he tends to give you what you get on the final. Don't even bother taking him again if you've had him before, he won't remember you
I have taken him before- and he was GREAT then and he was terrific teaching this class-I only wish he taught MORE classes in which to take -obviously, the prior poster didn't do well in his class.Next time, do the work-participate in class and you might learn something from a GREAT PROF
BORING! Oh my god, I couldn't stay awake in his class. Just keep up with the reading, raise your hand once in awhile, say what you want (anything, seriously, just quote the book for crying out loud) you'll do great. I got a B by doing all the reading the night before and not finishing the notebook questions. Kinda HS'ish, but easy.
OK, Kerins is easy. However, you won't learn anything except how to BS english theories about Dumbliners. Also, he plays favorites so so so so so bad! I can't stress that enough. You can have an A going into the final, but finish with a B if he does not like you and you didn't talk much. Overall, ok guy, but he himself can barely write or talk.
great guy, great course. take him!
well, i'm able to catch up on sleep...
Extremely repetitive, usually does the same class twice in a row. Genuine, nice guy. Keeps track of who raises their hand EVERY class. All you have to do is raise your hand and quote the book, not that difficult. Only a midterm, final and two papers for the whole semester. You have written questions for Dubliners every night. Relatively easy.
SO BORING! He says the same thing over and over. Raise your hand every class and he keeps track of it. Go to office hours cause he likes it, but he is not helpful. Pluralist in class, but single-minded when tested so know his answers exactly. Take risks in papers then supporte them well! I love English and i hated his class!
Horrible Prof, Pick Favorites Big Time,
This guy doesn't teach anything past the first day. He continually regresses to wha we did the first week, then tells alot of personal stories. He remenisses back to when he was a child, doing his dissertation, and countless other meaningless things. Plays big time favorites, the only reason he called on me b/c I yelled at him. His class is torture!
Doesn't help at all. I ask to meet during office hours, the man gives me an e-mail address. I e-mail him, he responds if your lucky a week later! Class is boring! The only thing that keeps me and the rest of the class awake are his dumb stories and corny jokes that he repeats over and over like a broken record. O yeah, RAISE YOUR HAND.
everyone makes him soudn great but i raised my hand always and got the B dont be annoying
Well, I hope you like James Joyce... because that's ALL YOU'LL EVER DO. Incredibly repetitive, and very nitpicky about small things in papers. I've always loved English until I had this teacher. He made me dread going to a class of something I once loved. Thank you, Kerins. The only good thing abouthim is being able to catch up on your sleep.
worst class ever. i got a C on everything. picks favorites. i raised my hand every class when no one else was until the midterm and when i found out i was still getting a C i just stopped. i have great grades in every other class. its bad when its obviously the teacher bringing down the grade not the student. if you are in this class get out now.
Agree with the post below I had him in the Spring played favorites big time, he was my only grade below a b freshman year which sucked. He spits alot also.
Although he is extremely easy (only 4 papers in a comp & rhetoric class!) he is very very boring. If you don't bring a pillow to class, do the homework there since no note taking is involved. 2 exams are also easy since you can plan ahead.
His obsession w/ Dubliners is disgusting. He lives in another world. He's boring, spits, and picks favorites... you better be one of them.
This guy is a character. He is bizarre and one of those teachers that later on you are like "remember that crazy english teacher i had freshman year?" That is all i have to say about that. The class isnt hard at all work-wise, but the few things he does assign, he grades pretty harshly. He is fair though, you can definitely work him.
wowwwwwwww. i really cant believe this guy is still teaching, let alone still using DUBLINERS.. i had this guy in 2001, and i'll never forget him! he is bizarre to say the least, and did have his "favorites"--the 1s that participated.. other than that, grading was all right.... once again. wow!
Horrible class. The Dubliners is now my worst favorite book ever. If I have to hear about James Joyce one more time I think I'll kill myself. His grades are hard and don't make sense. I have great grades in every other class but get C's in his. Waking up at 8:30 for this class is just torture.
enjoy dubliners. this guy is nuts. from the crpyt. plays favorites. grade on your paper = final grade. no matter what you do. in depth reading of one insanely boring book. he makes you hate james joyce. get ready to hear the same stories about his college days at least 50 times. get out fast.
hes so boring that you wont go to class... beleive me. very detail oriented, picks favorites, literally writes down who participates and gives them check marks. Senial and a huge pain in the gpa. do yourself a favor and snooze past him or snooze (very heavily) in class, comeing from a 3.0 student i.e. not a moron!
I took him for both closed reading and tragedy and comedy. The best professor at fordham. First of all for closed reading its on book that consists of 120 pages. He lectures a lot but if you read you really do not have to pay attention. He is also very funny this year making fun of the students that sit in the back. You have to take him!! got an B+
good teacher, very nice. OBESSESED with the dubliners. he is way too into the book, but you learn a lot. easy easy class. i would recommend him for first semester freshman year. kind of a crazy old man. makes strange jokes. overall great teacher and very interesting.
Really boring, he does favor people and he is not the easiest grader with papers. About 4 papers, in class midterm (essay) and in class final (essay)
Dr. Kerins is a very intelligent professor, yet I sometimes want to nod off in class. He's just so boring. Oh, and he has favorites and is not afraid to show it. He is a hard grader.
If your in his critical reading & writing class be prepared to read. The only thing you will read all year is Dubliners. VERY VERY Hard grader. You must be a very indepth reader to even get a clue to what this guy wants. Definatly has his favorites based on your class particapation-your grade will reflect this. Don't rely on sparknotes-it wont help
I had Dr. Kerins for Close Reading, Comp and Rhetoric and now James Joyce. He's a great teacher and extremely passionate about James Joyce's works. Plus he's the cutest old man alive and three semesters running is still telling the same adorable jokes. Not for people who want easy As or for people who are generally unintelligent.
Difficult grader, and his class is full of senseless digressions. I'm not sure how he expects you to actually know anything for his tests. He wasted his entire life analyzing the works of one author: Joyce. Do not take his class if you can help it.
Professor Kerins is a horrible teacher. He does not teach, he just babbles. The class is supposed to incorporate reading and writing and there was only one paper with the midterm and final for our grade so if you did bad on anything, your grade was bad. Extremely difficult grader, doesn't go to office appointments made, and is offthewalls crazy!
Funny, scattered, cute, and repeats himself. However, you learn so much and realize that you have an intimate understanding of all of the characters in the stories.
awful impossible to get an A grading is very random
Dr. Kerins is wonderful! He is a great professor. We focused only on James Joyce's 'Dubliners' which is great in a close reading class b/c we focus on just one book. He knows his stuff and opens your eyes to the little stuff [duh! point of this class]. He's sweet but he only gives one midterm and final and a paper so you gotta ace those to pass!
one word: donttakethisprofessor.
sweet guy, you can tell he really knows and loves what he's talking about. allows four unexcused absences and gives helpful and interesting comments on paper. had him for close reading and only had one paper, and an easy midterm and final. definitely recommend him.
He's the best! Pay attention and you'll do good.
Great Professor, I hate english but loved his class. Just pay attention and you'll do fine.
Had Prof. Kerins twice and loved him! I hate English, but loved his classes. Participation is MAJOR in his class. Show him you did the reading. There is one paper, midterm and final (which you'll ace if you pay attention in class and if you read).Make sure to write down the terms he writes on the board. will be tested during midterm and final.Great
Average professor. I personally didn't enjoy the class. Knows his stuff and has obsessively studied the book for a while, but your interest will mostly depend on your partiality to Ireland and James Joyce. You MUST participate to do well. The written assignments are optional and he only grades on participation and the midterm/final.
Great professor! Makes english bearable, just participate and read the stories and youll do great!
LOVE this guy, put a little effort for a great grade!
I've had Dr. Kerins for both Traditions of Story Telling and for Close Read. He is a great professor, but he is really passionate about his subject. As someone who is not an english person, it can be difficult trying to understand the depth he goes into when reading the material. He is also obsessed with James Joyce
Stay away, the guy plays favorites in class. Very unfair grader.
Professor Kerins is definetly passionate about James Joyce. One textbook is required. He is a fair grader but in order to do well read the text and study the notes he puts on the bored. one paper, midterm, final. Class can be boring but its not that hard to get a decent grade.
eh..he is an OK teacher. YOu really need to work hard for your grade and he plays favorites. He is EXTREMELY passionate about James Joyce.
First time ratemyprofessor.com has ever led me astray. His class was awfully boring, he repeated stories multiple times. He talked and talked and talked, yet regurgitating his notes didn't get me a decent grade on his test. I love Chaucer and Shakespeare and I dreaded going to this class.
listen, if you want an EASY A Kerins is a guy. He repeats the information so much, when comes the midterm you feel prepared simply because you've heard the information forever. It is boring at times, but Kerins is really cute(old man cute). He looks like he was reincarnated from medieval times with his long hair and composure.overall:NICE professor
Hes nice, talks alot, but i wouldnt say its an easy A!, but hes def nice and funny and i enjoyed attending his class.
sort of a boring class, since most of it is listening to him talk. if you have writing skills it will be an easy class, if not he will actually work with you to improve your skills. overall easy class, good professor, give it a shot.
Took him for Comp, easiest class I have ever taken. Makes you write short, 1 (maybe once or twice 2?) page papers every now and then, do some readings and homework. Rambles about his life during class when not going over homework. Take him if you want a really easy class, I didn't need help writing but he was always more than happy to help anybody.
This guy...I don't know what to say. He LOVES the middle ages, and he looks and acts like he is straight from there. He's a sweet guy but the class is dreadfully boring. He repeated the same things over and over again. Any assignments were simple, but the class was just so dry. Some of the stuff he does is hilarious, though. Looves participation...
If you care about learning something in your classes, don't take him. If you want a GPA booster, he's your man. Classes are boring as hell, but you don't have to pay attention to get an A, so bring a laptop.
A very sweet old man who should have retired years ago. Repeated the same 14 facts over and over again, resulting in no one learning anything. Has all the interesting-ness and charisma of your average door knob. Do not take.
this was an interesting class. the most important thing is paying attention to what he talks about for each story. read when you can and raise your hand every few classes and youll be in good shape.
I absolutely love Dr. Kerins. He's incredibly passionate about what he teaches, beyond intelligent and always includes interesting anecdotes in class discussions. That being said, he's definitely more suited for those with prior interesting in his specific field of literature than for mandatory core classes.
Frank Kerins class is really unorganized and he doesn't follow a syllabus. For modern irish lit we literally had a midterm, final and participation. Participation is so important to this guy so read and take down whatever he says. We had a take home final that good notes helped for. Bring a computer and take down whatever he says and its an easy A
