Young professor, very smart, helpful, and nice. He's not an easy A, he will expect you to actually learn the information. He gives plenty of feedback on papers, so pay attention to what he says, he gets frustrated if you keep making the same mistakes after he's told you about it. A LOT of poetry.
he is nice, but a tough grader. if you enjoy english take him, but if you don't appreciate poetry pass on him. i was confused the first couple of weeks of class but it got clearer throughout the class. he offers a lot of xxtracredit opportunities, which help. the class discussions are interesting and i did learn a lot.
If you do what is required you will be sure to pass easily. He is not a hard professor at all!! I would take him again!!
offers alot of extra credit and plenty of opportunity! Seems 2 care about students interest more than anything.... he loves english and even lets u callhim by his firtst name! loved grant! will take 4 engl 1102! his in class essays are reasonable and his office hours were great he really wants students 2 pass so do all assignments and u will pass!
Helpful, cares about the student, but sometimes is unclear on what assignments are and how they should be done.
This introductory English Comp instructor rated below average. Instructions/guidelines were not clear throughout the course. Grading, especially of essays, was inconsistent and did not follow the rubric; however, assignments were graded in a timely manner. Almost every reading assigned was by an African-American author, which was a bit strange.
Mr. Grant was an amazing teacher. I'm not a fan of english but he made it so much fun. I wouldn't say he's easy but he's a fair grader, and he's always willing to help after class for anything. He is very passionate about what he teaches, & is very approachable. He reads every paper and his critique's are very helpful. Also generous on xtra credit.
Very helpful. Fun.
Grant's grading and suggestions do not help you become a better writer, instead they leave you wondering what you did wrong. Overall, he failed 75-95% of our papers and curved us to low C's & D's. In at least 2 cases, he has failed students for plagiarism when the listed sentence was a properly introduced and cited quote. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
Mr. Grant was a great teacher gives alot of extra credit but he does grade very hard. He gives alot of examples of what to do in papers and is helpful
He is nice to an extent. His comments are not clear. I came into his class expecting to become a better writer. I cannot learn when he is judging me on an arugment that he does not agree with. He does try to help me, but I dont think i will take him again. It's not personal.
He was awful! grades very unfairly.
If you want to learn how to properly write the English language, pick Grant. If you want to cruise by, do not pick him. Simple as that...
Grant is tough, but definitely the teacher to take if you really want to learn how to write a good paper. Many believe he grades their papers so harshly because he doesn't agree with them, but he's actually trying to make them write more on other points of view so that they make solid, well-formed arguments instead of emotionally charged rants.
Simon's the man. In what is supposed to be one of the hardest courses in the nation, he made he seem so easy. His rye humour is the best too.
He isn't very helpful. The comments he put on my paper didn't really help. When I ask him a question, it's as if he doesn't understand what I'm asking. I'm left still confused about the assignment. I love writing and English, but he really sucks the fun out of it.I wouldn't reccommend him to anyone.
Grant is the kind of professor you want to like until you get your grades. Grading is arbitrary - if you write a paper that goes against his personal opinion he'll circle large sections without adding anything useful. Drafts are pointless because he doesn't help with mechanics. He likes saying that he failed everyone but had to curb us up to D's.
This guy's ENGL 1101 class is absolutely ridiculous. He grades so subjectively, and rather than offer anything constructive on how to better your paper, he just circles stuff and tells you it sounds 'Awkward'. I hated this class with a burning passion, and will never again sign up for a class with him! Doesn't explain anything or help at all!
I hate that man. I've never been so discouraged in my life. He sucked out all of my confidence in writing. I do not recommend him at all.
I did not have a good expereince with this professor. His comments on papers are rude and uncalled for. Instead of helping students succeed he breaks down your self confidence on writing. I am terrified to take English 1102 now. THANKS GRANT!!! :-)
Yes, he's definitely very hard in grading papers.. Don't expect to get higher than a C in in-class essays, but if you do well at everything else, like turning in the journal and major papers, you can still pass the class with a B or a high A. He's very funny and his lectures are not boring at all!!!
Quote a classmate: "He is so rude and I can't stand him." Pretty much sums it all up.
DO NOT take him. He is such a certified JERK! His grading is unfair and contradictory. He grades papers based on how he would write them, not on the correct way to write them. He is inconsiderate of the fact that not everyone comes into class with the same knowledge. Instead of letting you know how you can do better, he insults you.
His grading is tough. When asked if he ever gives A's he said rarely. But his lectures and in class discussions are relatively entertaining considering the subject. I can see where the people claiming he is rude are coming from, but I had no problem with him in that respect. I guess he is an acquired taste.
Clear cut, fair professor. If you can't pass his course then drop out of school now and save yourself some time and money.
Professor Grant may be a completely different english teacher, but as an english teacher in Humanities 2001, he is ridiculous. Although he does give fairly decent lectures, his grading is very harsh and he literally offers NO comments as to why you made the grade you did.
I think he's great. Some people say he's a tough grader, but I've gotten B's on half of my in-class essays and A's on other papers. He offers a lot of extra credit, but you need to look out for it because he doesn't really come out and say it. Extra credit tends to be writing one page on a movie or play you saw at school.
Thinks he is hilarious, which helps keep the class a smidge interesting. Spends a huge amount of his time correcting papers turned in which can be good, but aggravating. Difficult to get above a C on any in class essays or research papers.
I suggest taking this class only if you can handle a tough love approach to being taught. He isn't a jerk in person, and if you are with him while he's marking up a paper with comments, you are able to understand he isn't being mean when he writes them. He helps a lot, you just can't be sensitive.
I didn't mind Grant at all. It was tough at first to understand what he was looking for in a paper, but he gives a lot of comments, not to be a butt head, but to challenge you to see other points of view to develop a better arguement. I also learned more grammar in this semester than i've learned all through high school.
Mr Grant is a hard man to please. He does not believe in giving high A's, (our class asked him). His lectures are usually full of disgusting hidden sexual references. His tests are insane. No study guide. Missing one question can drop you from an A to a C. You have to write a journal and define 200 vocab words on top of reg reading assignments.
I've only started his class a few weeks ago and all I can say is. I'm Scared. Today we had an assignment due I didn't even know we had, he can sometimes mumble and I'm just terrified about whether or not I'll scrape by his class with a C. I usually do really well in English too...
DO NOT TAKE SIMON GRANT. He will steal your spirit for writing. He is a pompous know-it-all. His grading is unfair and biased. He never gives any positive feedback. I really hope he reads these so he can know how much his students despise him.
Please, I am begging you, do not take this class. It will be filled with unpassable class essays that, when returned to you, look like they were dipped in blue ink because of all the unhelpful comments and blue circles covering them. Oh yeah, you WILL get a D. Maybe a C if God takes pity on you.
This class is torturous, he is extremely sarcastic and talks done to hiis students. I do NOT recommend this professor for anyone, not even my worst enemy.
Professor Grant is no joke! I thought I had a hard teacher for 1101, but Grant is EXTREMELY HARD! I almost dropped him, but I decided to stick it out! The essays are very hard to pass and the topics are hard to write about. He grades very hard (highest I made was a C) & his comments make you feel inferior/dumb. I would not recommend him!
I really don't get why people are talking down on Prof Grant. Yes, he is hard and you have to actually work for your grade, but the times I went to him for help, he was willing to help. English at ASU is not easy, but that will be any professor you take here. He definitely prepared me for ENGL1102, and trust me, you will want that.
Professor Grant is sooo GREAT!He is super laid back and isn't hard at all if you do what you are suppose to do like read each assignment, study, and take notes. Gives tons of extra credit so take advantage of it. I would definitely recommend him to someone who plans on taking Humanities.
You'll thank Mr. Grant at the end of the semester for being a demanding, strict teacher. He wants to see you succeed, even though the harsh "blue ink" comments on your process essays might make you feel stupid... He requires a lot from his students but if you're willing to put the work into the course, you'll be fine. An excellent grammar portion..
Took Grant last semester for English. He is pretty easy if you stay on top of reading and write your papers. I got an A in the class, but a lot of my in-class essays got a C- or better. Just fix your papers according to his comments. And he will help you with papers if you just ask. Also, he gives tons of extra credit.
Prof Grant is crazy hard. It is nearly impossible to pass an in class essay and he talks very fast and very low. I would not recommend him to anyone taking engl 1101
He was a great professor!
I'd definitely take him again for 2002! ONLY took humn b/c it's required, I was glad I had Grant. Super easy! He gives random easy pop quizes & TONS of extra credit opportunities! & takes it EASY on you for the interdisciplinary essays! Also I'm pretty sure he curves b/c my quiz grades sucked & I still got an A, of course I studied a little!
Great guy and wants you to pass but his class is crazy hard. He gives extra credit and he is very helpful. You will definitely learn in this class but it may come at the cost of failing.
I am taking professor Grant for English 1101. His class is kind of boring but he is a good professor. He gives intense feedback on your papers so you can make them better. He is also very helpful and will answer all of your questions. I'm taking him again for 1102 and I would recommend taking him
Do not take this class! Professor Grant wastes class time going through old essays and correcting them. For some reason, he thinks that is helpful to the students. It is not, and it could make anyone fall asleep. He completely kills your essays. He also grades solely on grammar not the actual content in the essay. Stay out of this class!
He talks the entire class, rephrasing the same lesson the entire time. He concentrates heavily on paraphrasing. Class is not very encouraged to become engaged in lecture.
He's kinda funny but like someone else said, he just regurgitates the same stuff each class. He's strict on paraphrasing and attributions and grammar. His quizzes are super rough. If he doesn't like you, he'll act a little condescending towards you. 25% of the time, he'll teach something helpful. I wish I hadn't taken him.
Do yourself a favor and do not take this class. Grant's class is a waste and the money I spent on this course is wasted. He was sarcastic, prideful professor who looked down on his students. When he does let someone else speak, he interrupts constantly.
Professor Grant has to be the hardest and most unclear professor I have ever seen. The class is very difficult and he is just an all around horrible teacher. You better work super hard to even pass the class. Do not take him if you have the choice! Your saving your GPA!
Do not take his class for English 1101. He is not very interested in what he teaches and drags on for a very long time. He does not spend anytime telling you how to correct your essay, but rather writes it on your paper, and leaves it to you to figure out. You only have about three days to complete an essay, which is very insufficent. AVOID!
Don't take his class. Just save yourself the GPA drop and skip him.
Worst professor I have ever had. Very unclear, rambles, doesn't know what he is talking about, and grades really hard and unfair. AVOIDDDDD!!!
Professor Grant can be a little dry, but he is an amazing teacher. His grading is very clear-cut, and predicable. He tends to stress that grammar is not important; however, it is what you get graded on the most, so pay attention. His catch phrase is "or what have you." He says it a lot. I have on record 19 times in one class. ENJOY!
This class was a joke. He does not give essay guidelines, but he expects you to automatically know what you will be writing about in the papers.
He talks the whole class period. His class is basically nap time for me because he talks so much which makes me sleepy.
He sounds like an extremely annoying version of John Green, but what Grant has to say isn't interesting. He acts like the material he's teaching is the most important information you'll ever hear in your life, when really it's material you learned in the 4th grade. He also does this annoying shushing thing if you pack up your stuff.
This is literally the stupidest class I have EVER taken in my entire life. We read novels like Alice in Wonderland and the Wizard of Oz. If I wanted to read fairytales I would go back to kindergarten. There are no clear instructions on ANY assignments WHATSOEVER. Just like the novels, the class is completely nonsense, irrelevant, and random.
Humanities is meant to be a filler class. There is no reason I should have reading notes due EVERY class (considering the readings are 3-4 chapters long). Also, the grading for essays is ridiculous, there is no rubric with legitimate feedback as to WHY you got the grade you did. He grades as if you're an ENGLISH MAJOR.
Mr. Grant was an okay teacher. He tended to get off topic and distracted a lot during lectures so his notes got pretty messy. Reading notes were due almost every class. You have to write a 2 page paper at the end of each unit, which isn't too bad as long as you did the reading notes. Big group project at the end of the semester.
He talks a lot, its easy to zone out. If you do it doesn't really matter there are never any tests based off what he says. For writing assignments he provides pretty step by step guidelines. He gives reading quizzes and he'll usually tell you when they are, so be prepared and don't skip class. Just make sure you do all assignments.
This professor has honestly got the be the worst one I've ever taken. He drones on the entire class about previous essays and does not give specific information to help the students. He loves hearing the sound of his own voice and will make you aware of it as well. Don't try to speak unless you enjoy being interrupted constantly. First C for me.
He seems like a very nice person, really the way he teaches is just boring. Also, he never answers his emails. ever. so its very hard to contact him.
Professor Grant was alright. Class was pretty boring. He cant stand it if he asks a question and no one speaks and hell continuously ask the question until someone finally answers. Theres reading quizzes and 6 papers, including the final paper. Very detailed in grading papers.
Prof Grant talks and talks and talks and talks. Whenever someone asks a question, it's never clearly answered. He doesnt know how to communicate with his students and the whole class is just awkward. The one benefit for having him for 1101 is only having to write 3 papers. Most boring English class I've ever taken and I love English.
He isnt clear in his grading criteria . I would take my papers to the academic success center for my papers and they would be confused . He talks a lot and grades very hard. I would not recommend him .
Only 3 papers in the whole class
He is the worst professor I have. He talks the whole time just to hear his own voice. He gives SO MANY papers that he grades so hard! Do not take him!!!!
Honestly I have learned nothing from this class. I am a A+ writer in my other classes and in this class have been a D writer. Mr. Grant laughs when he says something rude and doesn't help when a student might need it with their essay. This class was a mistake and if you want to keep your HOPE and GPA. DO NOT TAKE!
Professor Grant is honestly a joke of a teacher. He gives 3 essays through the year, gives you either a C or D on the rough drafts no matter what. He only talks to hear himself talk during class, he just rambles a bunch on nonsense. If you dont answer a question he asks, he will ask repetitively until you answer. PLEASE DONT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!!
Only 3 papers the whole semester, grades pretty tough, if you get him i recommend going to him alot before the final draft and asking his opinion thats how you can get an A on the essay, grading criteria not super clear, and doesn't put in grades fast enough, gives some extra credit tho
He is generally a nice person, but he can be snippy if the class isn't participating. He is a tough grader, but I am a better writer after having taken his class.
I had no problem with this professor. Yes I did struggle in this class but I stayed after and talked to him about assignments and essays that we were working on and he helped me a lot. Showing you care to him is crucial for your success in this class. One of the best professors I've had. He really taught me a lot and improved my essay writing.
His lectures are like nails on a chalkboard! I dreaded having to get out of my bed to come to his class to listen to him talk in a VERY monotone voice the entire class. The only good thing was that we only had to write 3 papers the entire semester. Please dont take him for your own sanity!
Prof Grant is a little strange but I loved his class! His lectures can be a bit boring, but he made everything easy. We had 3 papers, 3 mini papers, and a presentation. He is very easy to get along with, and always gave good feedback on papers. If you come to class everyday you can easily do well. I would highly recommend him!
Professor Grant was not the most interesting lecturer and he does ramble on. However, his assignments are minimal and essentially easy. He does expect you to pay attention and participate in class. He only assigns 3 essays throughout the semester and gives back rough drafts with clear suggestions of how to revise.
He does not give any clear instructions for an assignment until it has been turned in. He will then give a grading guide stapled to your physical assignment and it will be covered in writing. The only way to understand why you failed is to meet with him after class. Fix these things and then You will get new blue writing on the entire page again.
Professor Grant is a great teacher. He is clear on assignment requirements. You have many opportunities to correct assignments prior to final submission. Seek assistance if needed; he is more than willing to help whenever needed. There is no reason to get a bad grade in his class when you submit the work on time.
I have learned nothing from his class and he fails to keep us informed of crucial information that we need. He is very inaccessible and has extremely rough grading expectations. I might as well learn from my 5 year old cousin, who is unable to read and can't even write their own name, in this subject. I would not take this professor again.
Prof Grant is always ready to help but does not help in a good way. He is very sassy with the way he helps and almost mocks your question. He also fails to tell the students what he is really looking for without burying it within his lectures that are like nails on a chalkboard and still fails to tell WHAT HE WANTS!! Will never take his class again
DO NOT TAKE GRANT. I've never made lower than an A in honors or AP ELA classes in my life, and I am going to be lucky to slide out with a C. Despite being online, he maintains a "synchronous" schedule but won't post work til mid day the day of. He doesn't respond to emails and when he does, he's very demeaning. If he's your only option, hold off.
WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE HAD! When I ask him for help, his feedback is not helpful at all. He has a very sassy and know it all attitude to all of his replies and feedback.
Horrible professor. The way he has his content set up in D2L is the most confusing way Ive ever seen it set up by a professor by far. Lectures are extremely boring and long. Gives no room for improvement when grading.
Boring class and lots of papers and readings. Try to not fall asleep
Lots of papers and readings. Lectures are boring and pointless
Prof. Grant's class is fairly simple. 3 essays throughout the whole semester with a few smaller assignments sprinkled throughout. The lectures can be boring but some do help out greatly with what you'll need for the essays. He grades tough but gives great feedback on your rough drafts to allow you to be able to write a strong final essay.
Rarely checks his email. All class assignments based on an interview you have to secure by yourself. Has no consideration for hardships. Seems like he was the unpopular smart kid in school and takes that out on anyone who attempts to correct him. Dropping his class and will resume this fall with a different professor.
Prof Grant is terrible. None of the topics discussed in class are explained clearly. When it comes to papers, you're not getting any help, but you will get your work graded very harshly. Structures are hardly ever explained but you will get a failing grade for not using the proper structure. Overall, this class has been an absolute waste.
Try your best to avoid this course if you just want to sit in a room for 50 minutes and listen to him talk and try to get a classmate to read because he is not. Maybe about 4 essays in total that range from 2-6 pages due. He also grades like you're an English major so don't expect to make what you've been making on essays.
