Professor Lange's class made be despise economics. His lectures are unclear and overly-confusing. He may be a 'funny' person, but his class is pointless. Most students don't even attend the lectures.
RUN AWAY!!! Professor Lange is the worse professor I ever had in my life. He is a really smart and nice person but he shouldn't be teaching undergraduate student. Most of the time we had now clue about what he was talking about. He is not following the textbook, his slides have mistakes and he obviously don't care about it. GOOD LUCK!!
Terrible class. Great as a person, but horrible as a professor. His lectures are always full of errors and he doesn't correct them. It doesn't help that the textbook is barely used so there is no way of knowing the right answer. Screwed everyone over in the midterm that had material not covered in class. introduction to micro? ya right. AVOID
extremely smart but not suitable for teaching. does not follow the textbook, covers material really vaguely does not solve examples, instead tells the students there are examples in the "homework". expects everyone to be like him, skips steps while solving questions. supposed to teach calculus and failed and made the midterm only based on calculus
An absolutely terrible professor. Not helpful at all. Very unorganized. Does not follow the textbook. When we asked him questions, he is very very vague. The exam comes out of nowhere. He does not give examples. AVOID THIS PROF.
he might be smart or even a genius but he has no idea how important it is to understand microeconomics clearly and thoroughly. calculus at max. for econ majors who have not taken calc. midterm and final: ridiculously hard. avoid him, but make sure you have a better option because you often don't.
I came into his class having three classes of calculus under my belt, and did really well. If you have the math background, he's quite good, but if you don't you are going to suffer. Given that it was probably the first class he had taught at McGill, it could have gone worse.
He IS very smart, he DOES demand a lot, but you WILL learn a lot. Midterm and final were tough, but his TA said what would be on them in a review class (that most people skipped). He expected you to understand the basic concepts before you got to class (by reading textbook); most students didn't. Does use a lot of basic calculus, though.
Terrible Class... So hard its not even funny. Don't know how he teaches undergrad. Great economist, but not a great professor
He is a nice guy but if you are in your first year undergrad', that your knowledge of calculus is not EXTREMELY high... I just advice you to run away. The class average was around 40% for the midterm and 50 for the finals. A lot of my friends dropped the class and loose their confidences, very normal for an intro class! Just go for the other prof!
even though i took cal his lvl is just too much for me... the book has NOTHING to do with the exam... at least it was all multiple choice i bet 80% of the class guessed all the answers and went YOLO for it. i still got B at the end cause he curved the grades so yeah..he's nice though :/
Absolute intelligent Professor. But, frankly, the level of his class is more suitable for honor student. But if you are interested in Micro you will be fine. Really.
Clearly a very intelligent guy but even with effort put in passing seems unlikely. His exams are extremely difficult and unlike practice he gives. The bell-curve helps but not even that much. Avoid taking this class at ALL costs.
This professor is clearly very intelligent and passionate about economics, but this is the hardest class i have ever taken! He is quite unclear in his explanations, never uses the textbook and the slides are useless. His exams are super hard and tricky! I would advise avoiding him if you want a good grade
While his class was pretty difficult, if you really put the effort in you will do fine. I googled concepts from class not from the book and used other university's handouts to help understand what he rushed through. Also throughout the class, he'll ask if you have questions- don't be afraid to really ask if you don't get it. He's a clear prof.
He is a very intelligent guy. He clearly knows his subject and knows what he is taking about. He likes being asked questions so you need not be afraid to ask. Doesn't necessarily stick to the book but that only means you need to be interested to survive this class. Understand the concepts is the key. Got a B in the D1 comfortably.
He teaches micro in an-depth way that challenges your thinking much more than if you were just learning concept definitions and formulas - so yes, it's a difficult and demanding class, but it's also very interesting and Professor Lange is great!
Definitely one of the better profs in the Econ dept. You must push yourself a little to succeed in his class (though not much - given that introductory macro econ by nature is easy). Lectures are clear, with a good dose of quantitative rigor.
He is a worse prof at McGill. He is clearly smart, but should not teach undergraduate students!
Although it is true that the class is demanding, it actually really makes you understand economics. Memorising in this class won't take you anywhere you actually need to be able to understand the concepts and you'll be fine. Overall a really good professor. If you're stressed out about the grade maybe you should avoid taking the class.
I really liked Fabian! He is an amazing prof. Very smart, makes you think and not just memorize the material. Great way to learn Microeconomics. Previous knowledge of micro is useful. I would definitely take again.
Best prof at mcgill!!! - Fabian Lange
worst prof at mcgill
He is a good person but the problem is he expects everyone to understand what he is saying while he does not reassert what he means for example he would be solving a question and he would not reassert or reimplement the concepts he is using to make it much clearer for that reason it is vital to study on your own when taking his useless lectures
He's so cute! Hard to listen to, but great to look at.
Prof Lange is very nice and helpful. His classes are well structured. However, the wording of his questions isn't always clear. It is a demanding class, but the entire course is very interesting and insightful. Lectures are recorded. He's good looking.
Bad in explaining material and not clear in getting his points across :(
His tests are tough but he is a fair marker overall.
He puts everything into formulas and sometimes it is really confusing. This class requires a lot of work and going to class is a must. Tests are tough and if you don't understand the material, learning by heart won't help you.
tests are hard, complicates everything and his lectures are hard to keep up with because he goes through the material way too fast . is also super condescending. Smart guy, just not the best prof
He LOVES calculus. Don't trust what they say, there is an unspoken math prereq which is evidently clear if you go to his lectures. Defos not an "intro" class (as they advertised it to me), maybe better off teaching philosophical doctorates.
Fabian gets a lot of hate, but I don't think it's warranted. If you're not good at math, it'll be tough but put the work in you'll be fine. If you know differential calculus, the math is not hard whatsoever. Tests are hard, sure, but he curves. He gives you more than the ECON 208/209 superficial understanding of markets. Valuable class.
You have to know calculus, because he'll give you formulas and expect you to know how to differentiate and what to differentiate. His tests are really hard, and he doesn't give examples/scenarios of any of the concepts he teaches. I was planning on majoring in economics, but I'm looking to switch because of this.
Super interesting course, and his depth of knowledge is very clear. But he almost knows too much, as he spends too much time laying the foundations of a model and then goes really fast when it comes to examining the outcomes of a model. Also found the assignments very hard, the correct way to answer was not always clear.
Extremely interesting class and Fabian definitely encourages debating in class. Would definitely recommend this class although an A grade is not guaranteed with hard work. Make sure to attend and ask for the meanings of the variables in the models (this is not always made clear and can be very confusing at times).
The most horrible teacher I've ever had in my life. Not only is he condescending when you ask for help but he teaches the course so poorly that even the most motivated student could potentially fail. His grading system is ridiculous and his class is so confusing, trying to learn the material was hopeless. If you have any choice never choose Fabian!
Terrible
AMAZING prof! He really knows his stuff, which can intimidating, but just show up to class, review weekly, and ask questions during class if something is unclear! Tests are tough, but he curves the grades. You can still get 90+ if you work and understand the theory. Don't just try to memorize things, because yu won't do well. Funny + great lecturer
I took ECON 230 with Lange, thought it was so-so. ECON 426 (labour econ) was a different story. Lange's knowledge and passion really come out. Lectures were organized, grading was fair. Go to lecture and ask questions! He really wants to make sure the class is following along and not just writing notes. I wish more profs were like this.
The lectures were interesting, but the midterm and final were really hard and weren't related to the questions that he raised during the lectures. Also he always use the new exams so the previous will hardly help you.
One of the most awful experience at McGill. At the beginning I was thinking that this challenging class will worth everything and give me knowledge. However, after one month I've got that I was wrong. The midterm was absolutely devastating, half class haven't passed. Final was even worse. He curved by more than 10%, still the average was law!
Teaches the material in a very intuitive manner. It's complicated at first, but I think he prepares us well for future economics courses
Langes Econ 230 class is TOUGH. His tests and exams are really hard and most of the time you wouldn't even know what's happening. Only good part about his class is that you can do badly but the curve saves you, an average student ends up getting a B. Even if you fail his midterm and final you still manage to get a c+ thanks to the curve.
Great Prof! Made me love economics. He is super passionate about the topics and that makes him a really good lecturer! Also, he was always available for help if needed.
Many people don't like him because lectures are very material-heavy and his grading scheme is based on your ranking in the class. However, you can tell that he is very well-versed in the subject and will do what he can to he can to help outside of class hours. Overall I found that he was a great prof and I learned a lot from him.
Very hard for Microecon. McGill economics entry requirements are not that tough, so I genuinely think he is trying to "thin the ranks." Took him for labor econ, and he was excellent. Very clear lectures, fair assignments and easy grading scheme. Really knows what he is talking about, and teaches the class with a focus on empirical research.
Avoid him at all costs. Don't take any course with him if its not mandatory.
Professor Lange is probably my favorite prof at McGill so far. His lectures are kind of long but they're interesting af and he tries to inject humor. The exams are hard though. Definitely a challenging class but if you go to class and take good notes you should be fine. Don't expect an easy A. He's super helpful at office hours!!
Professor Lange is an exceptional teacher. He is, without a doubt, the best economics professor I had at McGill. His labor economics class was extremely interesting, dynamically taught, engaging with the student. His intellectual rigor is admirable, his clarity in the explication of the model also. His midterm and final are fair and simple.
If you can take him for Labor Economics - do it! His exams are very fair and simple, you can most definitely do well if you learn and understand the concepts he goes through in class. Just pay attention to what he says - which is what you will be tested on. Did not even open the textbook, which suited me just fine!
Fabian is a terrible professor. He clearly does not care about his students and is not interesting. Took him last year and would not recommend.
Never answer questions after class and was very impatient when someone asked a seemingly stupid and fundamental question...
If I could write a book about him I would. I'd say lecture heavy, although the lectures make no sense and don't even correlate to the hwk as he refuses to do ANY examples. RANDOMLY calls kids out to answer equations immediately after he shows them. Grades curved up 19%. If everyone understood him they wouldn't need to curve. Passive aggressive too.
Makes a class that should be easy over complicated and confusing.
My fav prof at McGill by far. The class is hard but duh-- it's a 400-level on Labor Econ. He's clearly a genius and while the material is hard it's so interesting and he tries his best to boil it down. Hardest but most rewarding grade I've received at McGill. Go to class and GO TO OFFICE HOURS. He's an absolute gem in an otherwise crap department.
Nice guy but extremely difficult class. Not always accessible in office hours. Lectures cover too much material and jump all over the place. Testing/grading is fair. The math in 426 far exceeds what most Econ students at McGill are comfortable with. This is the fault of previous profs doing a bad job, but is something Fabian should be aware of.
Lange is definitely one of the harder 230 profs, but he's excellent. His exams are difficult, but he curves very generously. His 230 class is definitely more math-heavy than some of the other profs, but it isn't impossible to catch up if you don't have calculus experience prior. He is extremely accessible outside of class and always willing to help
Lange is an excellent professor. He always put a lot of energy in his lectures making it easy for you to keep your focus. He posted a lot of past tests which was really useful for the final exam which was eventually curved a lot. Lange is a very caring professor, one I would definitely take again. He is a great guy.
He's the best lecturer I have ever seen. He can make any material interesting. Very high quality lectures. Always welcomes questions, knows almost everyone's name. His exams are difficult for sure but I'd prefer taking a class from him than any other easier prof. Honestly, every prof is a disappointment after taking a class from Lange.
You NEED to read the textbook thoroughly and know every graph and formula/math notation like the back of your hand to do well because his exams are challenging. Class lectures are useless because he overcomplexifies topics, which he has admitted. Don't go to class looking even half asleep because he will call you out.
Honestly I don't even know where to start. Fabian is a very smart professor who knows what he's teaching however, he is extremely disorganized and unclear with lesson plans which makes preparation for tests extremely hard. He overcomplicates lectures and concepts and does not even follow the textbook properly. Math heavy lectures please avoid him..
Makes dull content bearable.
Professor Lange is a very knowledgeable guy who tries his best to engage students and encourages all to participate. The unfortunate reality is, however, that his lectures are often all over the place, there's little preparation for examinations, and it often seems as though he himself is unprepared. Really nice guy, though.
This teacher made this class extremely hard to understand.
This man is so arrogant it's crazy. its ironic bc he is a terrible lecturer. I did well in the course, but I still found it extremely unfair and unnecessarily cruel. I would take another professor.
It is a hard course overall, and yes sometimes his lectures are not always super clear. However, he really tries to engage all students, and if you are willing to put in the work at home to really go through and understand the contents, the tests are very fair, and often easier than what you expect.
My major is Economics. After taking this class, I lost all my enthusiasm for economics. The class content and assignments, and exams were irrelevant.
Lay off the power trip Fabian. These are first year students
Goes way too fast. Doesn't expalin really well
His lectures are of substance. That, no one should be able to deny. Despite the valid criticisms of the difficulty of the course, the passion he brings is palpable, his knowledge admirable. You are in a university. That's what you want from a lecturer. For students of no economics background, this professor will gift you an appetite for it.
Fabian is passionate and interesting however this class is structured terribly and it is hard to learn the material. He does not provide proper practice to be able to master the material I was really disappointed by this class since It was frustrating feeling like we weren't given the proper tools to succeed and actually learn any of the material.
The lectures are great, but the material is complex and maths-heavy. You must go to class; otherwise, you will get carried away quickly. He is a good teacher. He explains the material well. Exams are on the challenging side, but often you will get curve. I understand why some people may have a hard time because he is not really caring.
Prof. Lange is great! The material was challenging but it was clear that he wanted to make sure that we understood the concepts. If you go to class and study, you can do well. Grading criteria could have been specified at the start. If you haven't taken AB calculus or MATH 140 prior to this class, I would recommend it.
Well I just wanna say he is really amazing !! All the false accusation of him will be reported. He goes over everything in the course in detail and provides us more than enough examples to enhance our comprehension. Despite of the trickiness and difficulty of his test , he curves up A LOT so you can easily get an A!!
BEST PROF EVER!!!!
He is passionate about his teaching, i can feel he tries hard, but it is not like a intro course, very hard, and you wont do well if you miss the class
That's a really interesting professor with great lectures and fair midterms/finals. The only little thing negative I have to say is that the lectures are a bit too theoretical, if you want to practice what you learn you really have to use the book or online exercises... Overall, I recommend Prof. Lange!
Avoid at all costs!
Anyone hating him either doesn't attend class or OH or has a calculus problem (take calculus 3 before the class or pay attention to the first few calculus lectures). One of the most caring and smart Professors. You can learn a lot from him if you give the effort. Weekly quizzes can be confusing but he sometimes gives answers in OH. A true ECON gem!
He is a great professor who actually cares if you understand the material. His exams are very fair and if you don't do well it was probably your fault, not his. You do need to be comfortable with a little bit of calculus but nothing crazy, the homework is fair and not that long. 10/10 prof would take again.
Attendance is mandatory and the content is a little bit difficult but if you go to class you will be able to keep up. Lectures are very engaging/interactive and he is very approachable both after class/in office hours. I highly recommend taking Econ230 with this professor.
Prof Lange makes his lectures engaging and encourages participation, and gives very fair exams. He's also very approachable outside of class, and a lovely guy to talk to. He tests for critical thinking and application, so be comfortable with some basic calculus and the key concepts of the course and you will do well
If you have him i pray for you ! Do not give up exams are VERY VERY VERY CURVED !
All the other good n bad reviews about him r justified tbh. At first he seemed condescending n all but overtime he became chiller. Tho i never attended office hours bc of that. He teaches at a pace thats too fast for the avg student n doesnt provide much examples on solving problems. i was failing 2nd semester til i got an 87% on the final.
Great person and lecturer. He really likes anyone who asks questions, and his OH portray this. Is very happy to help. The grading scheme is pretty solid and doesn't change but the exams are constantly curved probably in relation with class performance - including a historical curve on the final as the format had to change because of the TA strike.
Fabian's reviews are totally unfair. The class itself is hard but he is a great professor. He keeps the class engaged and explains concepts very clearly. The homework is pretty hard but his exams are super fair if you take notes and pay attention in class. If you have him you're in luck and this is coming from someone who got a D in 208.
Passionate teacher. Highly suggest to have taken a calc class (at least have minimal knowledge about differentiation). 1st semester harder than 2nd semester. Asks questions if you have any / come to office hours! Exams can be hard, expect big curves (2nd semester final curved by roughly 30%). Econ230 ESA on YouTube for additional resources.
Really, really enjoyed my 230 D1/D2 with Prof. Lange last year. He likes to cold call, but encourages volunteers and participant; if you accidentally say something wrong, he is more than willing to help guide you to the right answer. Tests were hard but if you studied properly, you will do well (he also always curves). Can't recommend him enough.
I took fabian's class last year and i absolutely hated it. looking back now his class was one of the best things I could have taken in my first year. prepares you very well and he is fair with grading and exams. you just have to put in the work and it may be a bit difficult for an intro class but it will set you up so well for other econ classes
He lives to destroy GPAs. There's no cohesion in his lectures. Introduces Cal III concepts when the course requirement is Cal I. I loved economics until taking his course. It made me question my career path. I devoted easily 2.5x more study hours to his course, and it was by far the worst grade I received in my undergrad.
Very good lectures, passionate and engaging.
