Very fair, she lets you know what is expected. Very helpful if you go to her for the help. Good instructor to take.
Perhaps the best teacher I have had. Not only do you learn about the subject taught, you learn to yourself and others in a different light.
I do not recommend this class for slackers, but if you are willing to work and want to learn something she is by far the best teacher I have ever seen.

My friend and I both tried very hard in this class and were graded unfairly. Our work followed her outlines and she still stated that they were wrong. She did not extend our due dates when my friend had her baby and when my daughter was sick.
I dont know who the students were who gave this teacher high ratings. Don't dare deviate even slightly from her mold for the "perfect paper." Her grading system is bogus and unjust, and I dont think she could add points correctly to save her o
If you have a choice, avoid this teacher!
I had her three years ago as a freshman. She is very hard but you learn and you use the info later in college. If you're looking for an easy grade don't take her. If you're looking to learn take her, but agree with her on your papers for a better grade
I had her 2 years ago and I would not take her again. To write your papers you have to follow her specific format. I'm sorry but writing is a creative process and we all have our own styles and shouldn't have to have to follow and EXACT format.
Dr. Fairy was the most demanding Eng. teacher I've had, but because of her I LEARNED the right way and the wrong way to write a paper.
She took a course that I used to enjoy, and on that I am relatively good at, and made me hate it... Probibly the worst teacher that I have had to date.
Very demanding. Would delay important confrences but not due dates. Spent more time telling stories than teaching grammer. Had very poor spoken english (especially for someone with their PHD in English!!). I worked very hard and she was still critical
This teacher is horrible and can't add for beans. Don't ever take her. Even if you are a good student she will mark you down she is never satisfied.
I had her for both 101/102 she is by far the hardest teacher I have ever had to face, but she knows her stuff her book is easy to read and you will learn a lot. If you are willing to work harder in her class then any other.
Probably the most unreasonably demanding profs I have ever had. I appreciate those with high expectations, but not ones who expect you to read their mind and give them what they want. She was also rude. I hate rude.
I had her a couple of yrs ago. I felt her class was challenging. As long as you know what she's looking for in a paper you'll be able to pull off at least a 3.0. I did. Plus, I actually learned something. That's good for not liking to write.
I have to say she was hard but every papaer to date that I have had to write has been a great paper due to her teaching.Her book explains everything needed for this class. I loved her as a teacher.If you want to learn how to write an excellent paper-take her.If you want it easy I wouldn't take her.
I loved English in HS, but it went out the window here! She is very demanding and critical. By the end of the semester, she yelled at those few students who were still in class. Her book wasn't very helpful, and was expensive.

Before taking Dr. Hayes class I was interested in going into jounalisim, but now after taking her calss I've decided not to. She is probably to date the hardest professor that I've had!

I loved english, until I took Dr.Fairy. Trying to sort out between 2 books and 2 CDs and her syllabus, AND blackboard, is hard.She talks to you like you are a kid. She encourages you to ask questions, but then talks down to you. Would never recommend her to anyone!
I had hoped to learn something about english with this class, but that didn't happen, even though I got a 4.0. I would not recommend this professor to anyone. She makes things more difficult than necessary. To top it off she has a big attitude.

This lady is an insult to the teaching business. She has a very large ego, and talks down to you instead of helping out. She lost my papers and then found them after I withdrew from her class, but it was too late. I got a 3.5 in Robinson's class.
This teacher is plain unusual and different. On orientation day we were handed a 18 page syllabus that my honors graduate wife of UofM could hardly understand. She spoke to us like we were in a episode of that 70's show. Too much jive talk for a english professor who demands so much perfection and very odd behavior to boot. Over bloated ego as well
Hard teacher, but if you actually pay attention, you will learn soo much. I was only able to take the class for half of the term, because I was put into the hospital for a long time, but while i was taking the class I learned soo much, in such a little time. If you are looking for an easy teacher DON'T take this teacher, BUT if you are looking for a teacher who will teach you A LOT, then DO take her.
She seemed to go out of her way to intimidate and condescend to her students. Very inflated ego, which she likes to display. Didn't do much for me, except make me research my profs better before signing up for their classes.

Shes a good teacher, just strict, and if you dont want to work Id reccomend picking a different professor. Its not easy to pass, but she helps you understand what your doing wrong.... Im currently struggling in this class and have NEVER got a bad grade in English, but I apreciate her honest critiquing
If you're interested in going into teaching (esp high school) then this class is for you. Shes a hard instructor, and theres a lot of work involved, but she knows her stuff and will teach you a lot. She is very strict and is not afraid to tell you that. You will learn a lot in this class about african american lit and teaching, but it wont be easy.
Dr. Scott is a wonderful professor who really knows her material. If you want to learn something, then I suggest you take her class. She cares about the literature and she presents in a unique way.
An egocentric non teacher. Our class started with 30 + students and wound up with 4. I was one of them. My first 3 assigments were Es. I submitted a paragraph that I had pre-graded and corrected by another Phd in Englich. It got an E. I am 50 by the way and took the course for fun. It wasn't! avoid her like the plague.
She knows her stuff, that's for sure. She's not easy, though. If you're slacking, she knows. She can smell your fear. If you're called on and havn't read your material, she WILL know, and she WILL call you out on it. Don't try to hide, either, she can see if you're avoiding her. But if you put in the effort, the result of the class is good.

I had Dr. Hayes-Scott for a distance learning eng-102. It was a terrible experience. There was no way to please this instructor, I completed all assignments on time. The class wrecked my grade point average. Stay clear of the storm that will rain down on you.
I must echo some of the comments of this professor based on my terrible experience. She is without a doubt one of the most sarcastic (read her syllabus and you'll understand why) and one of the most pompous professors I've had, especially considering this is a 101 class at a community college. Evidently a PhD make you better than everyone else.
EGOTISTICAL NUT JOB. only teachers from the textbooks she writes herself. grades on immessurable and unpredictable "improvement". I took her as an online course and had to meet with her one on one and when I got there she rushed me in - tried my CD in her CD player then told me it was fin e, see ya later - I was there for a lesson!! Dr. Hayes-Scott is a very hard teacher but i learned a ton from her class. she really knows her info and is definetly willing to help you if you are having a problem. i have never learned as much in an english class as i did in hers. but she is definetly a very unique indivitual...
All you have to do is get the assignments in and follow her curriculumn. yeah she makes you buy her book and a book she sponsors, but if you are looking for a grade just suck it up and do it her way. she is a wackjob though. she is also just out to make some money off of students. Who tells you to buy their own book, honestly?

Yup, this prof. is quite eccentric. But people, she grades on improvement. i practically failed the first two assignments and walked away with a 4.0 in the class. I went to the writing center and got help. That is all she's looking for, for you to actually try. She clearly says in her syllabus she grades on improvement.
First of all, if you are even remotely looking to slack, do NOT take this professor. She can spot bullcrap from miles away. She is very wacky, but very smart, and passionate about english. I learned more in her class than I've ever learned. You will work hard, but the reward will be huge. I learned a lot about english as well as life.
I took her online class and learned absolutely nothing that I didn't already know. She made us read a badly-written children's book about ponies. The assignments themselves weren't particularly difficult, but she grades very harshly and won't accept any late assignments for any reason. She seems very passionate, but I don't recommend her.

I had this prof for eng 101. Yes, she was hard, but at start up, she clearly stated everything she expected and she expected just that. It was hard work, but if you put in the effort, she's willing to help you. I paid to be challenged, not handed a grade.

This teacher is ridiculously RUDE, I am currently taking this class and wish I would have read this site before I took her class. She talks down to her students every chance she gets on discussion boards where everyone else can see. She degrades students as much as possbile. This lady needs to take her doctorite and well you know.
Dr. Fairy seems to try to be a good teacher. It does not work. The assignments are excessive, due dates are impossible and course materials are terrible. Avoid Dr. Fairy at all cost!
For someone who came from an AP class in high school and loved English, I currently hate it.The format she created for papers is mandatory..it leaves no room for creativity or developing your own unique writing style. She is very rude and egotistical. Just because you have a PHD does not mean you can belittle students. My advice? Avoid her

I had this teacher this semester, and she is terrible. If you have the choice, do NOT have this professor.
This professor was TERRIBLE! She was MEAN. Literally screamed in my face when I asked for clarification on an assignment. Made us buy books SHE published and write papers about them. Then called it plagiarizing even when properly cited.
She was rude from day 1, talked down to students in front of others. Talks you into not dropping the class even though every paper I did and tried super hard on I got an E. Should have dropped on day 1. Her own book is used for this class and it has font, spacing and grammatical errors but she is an English teacher? ATTN MOTT take a look at her!
Beware that this is NOT a blowoff class. You will have to work very hard and read lots of material. Still, I had a great time in this class. She was very respectful towards us; I'm not sure what is going on with these other comments. She is willing to work with people, I had a 1.5 at mid and ended with a 3.5, all because of her help. Great teacher!
She is an old school type of professor, and won't let you get away with anything. I had her for 101 as well. She is not easy, and I think she knows it. She offers help so take it, and if you don't... you will fail.
Very difficult teacher. Instructions are unclear and scattered among many areas and difficult to follow. She mixes Ebonics in with her communications. This is unacceptable for an English professor. Very difficult and hard to please. I wish I had read this forum before taking the class.
I had her for an online class. After my first 2 papers, I wanted to quit. She assured me to stick it out and I would be fine. She grades on "improvement". Advice...do crappy on your first 2 assignments and gradually get better so she feels she "taught you" If you take her, you better have thick skin and a strong desire to work your behind off
Worst teacher ever! I cannot believe there are any positive comments on here about her. She grades on "improvement", and I got a 4.0, but the quality of my writing didn't improve, only my ability to follow her bizarre directions. I enjoy writing, but I took nothing positive from this class. I wrote a letter to the dean of humanities--no response.
Great instructor; I really enjoyed her course. If you are READY AND WILLING to learn not only about African American literature but about culture and literature as a whole where it can be helpful in your everyday life, then you WILL enjoy this class...IF YOU LOVE PROFERSSORS WHO ARE UNIQUE AND NOT BORING In their teachings YOU WILL LOVE THIS CLASS!
At first I didn't like this class just cause we had to write a lot of papers, but she grades on improvement! If you're willing to do the work she is willing to help. You can ask all the questions you need & she will answer them until you understand the assignment. Great teacher! If you're having a bad day by time you get out u will feel better.
Horrible, mean, not helpful, and rude are words to describe this online class. Why do instructor with a ph.d behind their name feel like always have something to prove. Worst instructor I have ever had.
Okay YES she is a bit scary at first and YES she is a hard grader. But she really softens up if you show her that you are actually interested in the material and paying attention/participating in discussion. She seemed very pleased with our class' enthusiasm at the end of the semester. Not a coasting class; you have to prove you're worth her time.

She was not helpful at all! Uses her own textbook-Bare Essentials, 13th edition by Hayes-Scott. It was also confusing!

Now this class for me is not easy ..but I didn't expect college to be easy ..so far I have learned a lot from her class ...I ask many questions and she always helps me understand better ... I never felt she was rude or unhelpful .... In fact she is very nice and glad to help me and encourages you to feel comfortable to ask questions :)
I cant see why anyone has something negative to say about dr. fairy. Intimidating, yes. Who cares. She was disorganized which was the ONLY hard part. I DEFINITELY look at literature different after being in her class. In a good way. She basically made us dissect poems and stories. Shes a strong and inspirational woman and i enjoyed her class.
Very little attention paid to individual students. Speaks down to individuals throughout communications. Not a difficult class, but this instructor makes it much more difficult than it should be. My advice is to wait for another professor to be able to teach you this class. It will be in your best interest to steer clear of this trainwreck.
This online class was horrible. She was the least helpful professor I've dealt with online, her textbook is useless, and her directions are ridiculous. She taught me nothing but how to bend to her style of writing. I spent 95% of this semester stressed out and crying. I wish I would have read these before hand. Stay away from Fairy if you can.
She was hard, but she did try to help. I do not agree with her choice in text book. She did not explain assignment very well. She will help you if you ask!!! It was hard for me because she was really aggressive and I felt out of place...
She was intimidating, she will help you and be nice if you ask but not until then. She seems to look down on people and sometimes comes off very rude. Her grading scale is very unfair and she really just expects you to already know everything coming into the class. I did everything I could to do well in her class STAY AWAY!

I thought that Dr. Fairy did well teaching this course online. She made the instructions for each project clear and easy to know exactly what and when she expected your project to be done. She is straightforward, but always wants you to do better. She gives you every opportunity to make your grade in the class better or improve.

I had Dr.Fairy for engl-101 and she is very disrespectful and unprofesional. I had this lady and she emailed me to do a test online, so I did it and she tells me that I didnt do it, and she would recommend that I drop her class then she emailed me being dispectful, I cut into this he/she real quick!

While she could be a bit more clear on her instructions for certain papers, Dr.Fairy is awesome. I'm amazed so many people left comments saying how rude they think she is because I found her to be not only a great professor but an amazing human being. She is one smart and funny lady!

I really really enjoyed her as my teacher. She really cares about her students and their personal lives however "excuses" are not tolerated. At the beginning she can and will come off mean however just do your work act as if you are learning and your will make it. She set a lot of rules but if you discuss your issues she will bend. Doctor Fairy Hayes-Scott is an incredible English teacher. While the class is challenging, you always learn something new with each day you attend. She is full of energy and puts daily life into her lectures. You need to attend class though, because each class she goes over new criteria and gives out amazing tidbits. Make sure to use your textbook!
Dr. Fairy is a difficult professor to take. I finished the class with a 4.0 but I constantly was checking with her in her office hours to make sure I was writing things how she wanted. You must come to class and do all the assignments. If you are interested and work hard, she will help you.

I was a single mom of two kids when I went to college. Ms. Scott was tough but fair. She saw I was willing to learn and took me under her wing. I received A+'s in her classes which led me to believe I could achieve even greater successes . Her class is a metaphor for life. You get out of it what you are will to put into it Thank you, Prof. Scott!

I was in her class in 1989. She terrified and educated me.
My mom passed away during her class in 2015. She was very understanding of my feelings and cared deeply. Ended up finishing her class with a 3.5. She is very difficult and a hard grader but, I recommend her! If you don't plan on coming to class everyday, I wouldn't take her class. If you actually want to learn something take her class!
I took this online. I would recommend this class to anyone who is willing to work. My final grade was an A+ which I was surprised about because I got a few bad grades. The information you need is given to you, it just needs to be applied. I definitely learned valuable info in this class. She was not mean at all (but I never saw her in person).
Awful Teacher. Disrespectful. Rude. Hateful. Made you come to class and write a five paragraph paper during conferences. Worst teacher I have ever had. She does not know what she is doing. She doesn't give lectures. for my semester we started off with at least 25 kids and by the last few weeks, only 6-8 were left because they hated her so much.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!!!! She grades based on how much she likes you, and she makes it VERY obvious if she doesnt like you. If you dont buy the book SHE wrote, you wont pass the class. She takes everything very personal. Please save yourself the trouble and dont take a class with her. Youll regret it. I promise you.
I think Dr. Fairy is better suited for English majors or graduate students, however, she's okay. One of the toughest graders I've experienced, but her intentions are good. There's two big extra credit assignments - do them!! Take her feedback and apply it. Also, ask questions and interact with her, she likes it and it'll help you in the long run.

This class format is nothing like any online class I have ever taken. The format is impossibly unintuitive. The text is nonsensical, as are the paper topics. You are required to buy the textbook (written by her), and another book which appears to be written by a colleague. It is obvious she does not attempt to understand argumentative topics posted
This professor was not helpful AT ALL!!!! I asked her for help and she basically told me to figure it out on my own. After I attempted to do that, I received many failing grades on my assignments. She also wrote many rude comments on papers as if I'm illiterate. I don't recommend her to anyone
Honestly one of the worst professors Ive encountered. I took an online class with her too, mind you. She doesnt answer questions, and if you email her she is rude and condescends you. I wouldnt recommend her for anyone learning needing to take an English course, she would be better suited at a different college.
This class has been a literal nightmare. She is all over the place with grading. Super nitpicky about literally everything. She is super wordy with her announcements and is horrible about sending out reminders. Get ready to read literally everything. Shes a super sweet person, not the best professor
Honestly, you need to be on top of it all the time because she definitely isnt. There were several times where I had to email her, telling her that you cant make an assignment due if you havent posted the questions/ needed materials for the assignment. She doesnt have her ducks in a row but expects you to.
Do not take her course online. The women is all over the place and the tools she uses to teach the course are very outdated. She uses podcast to explain her 26 page syllabus that eventually just all blends together. She makes you work off two different site MCC Blackboard and another site that is extremely outdated. Dropped the class after 1 day.
I am so disappointed about this class. I am halfway into the semester and I am so frustrated with her. I have NEVER received a grade below an A in English, and got an A in ENGL-101, she grades assignments VERY harshly and takes unnecessary points off of small mistakes. I wish I would have dropped this class in the beginning.

Ahe refers her class as an acedemic marriage. Refers to her classroom as being in the bedroom.... Don't you dare leave early because, and i quote, "you dont leave the bedroom early. Thats rude" she yells if people dont ask enough questions. She is all over the place, looses papers that need to be graded. She is a MESS!! Save your self.
Dr. Fairy Hayes Scott is the worst teacher Ive eve had the misfortune of meeting. Attendance? Mandatory. Grading? Whatever she decided that day. Guidelines? Unclear. Passing? Only if she favored you. She told me Id never amount to anything, so a decade later I have my Masters & Im an author. I send her autographed copies of every book I write.

I took her for English 101 back when an electric typewriter was state of the art. She was one of the toughest, yet best teachers I ever had. She taught based what she knew we'd face going forward. No excuses. She began, "I'm going to work you." She wasn't kidding. Students looking to "mail it in" would get buried. I got an A, but I EARNED it.
