You really gotta work but if you get a cool TA .. maybe not that hard. Make sure you pay attention during the prelab lecture.. it's hard!
Faith is awesome, she is very helpful, you gotta pay attention in the pre-lab lecture and make sure you take notes.. she is always helping when you need it..Be nice to your TA
This class is hard. But I guess you have no option but to take it if your taking CH 141 or 142. Faith is a really nice person, but her lab manual is crap. It makes no sense and doesn't explain much. I didn't understand a single lab.
couldnt pay attention cause she was so hot.
This teacher knows nothing about chemistry. Hire a real prof to teach this course.
One of the nicest people ever. She may seem to come off as a bit of a ****, but once you get to know her you will learn that she isn't. She is extremely helpful and is very clear on what she wants in the reports.
A great teacher, the prelab wkshts are quite rough, but if you go ask her for help on them she'll help out a ton. Alot of work, and the TA's can be really hard sometimes, but a great class otherwise.
she has made students cry. intimidated me for years. not good with people. needed to do plenty of work, but I've had tougher classes. I wasn't a good student when i took her. all the lab reports provide plenty of busy work. don't learn much for your time.
i loved her so much second semester once i got to know her. the lab is hard and takes a lot of time the night before. prelabs suck and the exam is impossible but wont ruin your grade (somehow)
HOTT! Help each other on pre-labs, and an easy TA and the class is a breeze. Any questions go to her during office hours, and she walks you through the WHOLE thing. So easy, she really cares. Wants people to do good.
I think she's hillarious but nobody else seems to pick up on the humor. Just do your prelab and come into lab with half a clue of what to do, you should be okay. Don't copy off of others, that'll make her upset, and rightfully so. If you need help ask she'll give it. Reports are a lot of work.
Faith is the one of the worst teachers i've ever had! Way to go JCU!
I think Faith was very helpful and apporachable. Sure the labs are a little tough, but chemistry is a tough subject, if you can't handle them then chem is not for you. Faith is always willing to help or explain unclear material. Great lady
This extreme makeover candidate is the WORST instructor i have ever had.Has no people skills or intellect. Helps only people she wants to and I even heard her talking badly about another student,to other students!Lacks professionalism, especially at these prices. HORRIBLE teacher.Report her.
dude, no. She sucks, avoid her even if she is a requirement, take someone else later you will regret her. She is impossible and is a tremendous waste of time.
You need to take her there is no way around it. the lab is hard and takes a lot of time the night before. prelabs suck and the exam is impossible but wont ruin your grade (somehow). She is very approachable once you get over the shock. i loved her so much second semester once i got to know her.
baddddd....very bad...TAs are hard, class is hard, she doesn't help, it just sucks
She yells at her students like they're in second grade. Does teach good lab skills for upper level chem. Just get through it. Don't let her or her stupid prelabs upset you. You'll look back at her the next fall and laugh.

VERY BAD teacher! Ugly on the inside and outside. Favors students she likes and i too heard her talking about another student. So unprofessional. Have parents write the dean to get her out or call the Ohio Civil Rights comission. It's free to file a report. It's ironic that satans helper works at JCU. Just an ugly person all around.
At first she seems like the devil. After a while she seems better. She will help if you ask, but always seems pissed off to be helping you. If i didnt have to take this class i wouldnt, but since i have to i guess it could be a little worse...maybe a little. She does go over the labs before theyre performed and is a pretty good teacher.
Why does everyone hate Faith? I love her...just try, ask for help/questions, and you will do alright. Make sure to establish a good relationship with your TA also. This lab ISN'T that hard.
When you do your experiments, you had better be fast. She lacks patience with you if you're a straggler. Just get along with your TA, and you'll do fine.
Not that you have a choice if you want to do any chemistry here... But don't worry. Faith is fun and friendly after a few weeks of pain. Soon enough, you'll find how helpful and hilarious she can be, even though lab is still lots of work. The point is to be the last man standing, so just stick it out. She's great.
She claims to go over everything that needs to go in the post labs but some the TA's are the one's who grade them...
Faith is AMAZING!!!!! Her class is hard and it sucks to write a lab every week but it is worth it. You get what you put into it. She will help you no matter what. She is one of the professors that I am closest with on campus. =D She is not as bad as people say...DEFINITELY TAKE FAITH!!!
Faith makes things difficult and people cry, there is no doubt about it. But, if you put time into lab you will have a better grasp on the chemistry behind the lab. Prelabs will suck, you won't know where to find the answer. Try not to wait till the last minute because you will likely need extra help. Once you get to know Faith she's awesome.
FAITH IS AMAZING. if you need help, GO TO HER. she will help you. she is hilarious if youre not stuck up. yeah, there is a lot of work because its to weed out morons like those posting mean stuff here. she will love you if youre not stupid and if you ask her for help when you need it. the class is very fair, and the exam wont hurt you. LOVE HER!!!!
Faith is a great, but she expects you to know too much. She expect you be up to date on everything you are experimenting.
Faith is REALLY intimidating at 1st. I wanted to drop the class after the first day! But as the semester goes on, she gets SOO much better! You can ask her for help, and she will help you. She does a REALLY GOOD job at explaining the labs - She usually DOES them almost every time so that people aren't confused! I LOATHE chemistry, but Faith is ok!!
she is extremely intimidating. i hated her up until midterms. she got better and nicer. the class is very hard. but the ta's are the ones who make it difficult. the ta's suck and grade so hard. they want everyone to fail. faith wasn't that bad.. but she expects u to know 2 much. the final was ridiculous but thank god it doesn't count as a grade!!
She is really intimidating at first, but the sooner you go to her for help the better. She's always willing to help you, especially with the prelabs because they are designed so you have to go see her to answer them.Though her prelabs and lab reports are tedious compared to O Chem, she definitely prepares you for later classes. Learn to love Faith.
LOVE Faith, I am going to miss her so much. Very intimidating 1st semester but second semester i actually looked forward to lab, shes hard but its all stuff that will help in future labs
Tough teacher and you have to focus really hard in class to keep up. Very helpful and she sends emails before the lab is due to point out how to do things that may be difficult. TA's are a pain in the neck, especially if your TA happens to be ur classmate in another class.
Faith is amazing! She is very intimidating at first but then you'll love her and she's funny! It's a lot of work for a 1 credit class but you'll be thankful in the end!
A bit tough to get used to at first but otherwise a good class. Had more fun with chem in high school though. Could make class more interesting. Would have her again though.
Love Faith! She is awesome!
Faith is great, she seems intimidating at first but that is to scare all the kids who really do not want to be there so stick with it if you're really interested. She is trully a nice person. She will love you if come to her office for help and it will definaltey help your grade. The TAs are awful, they are the ones who make class miserable
LOVE FAITH! stay untop of your work and you will be fine. she gives all the answers to the lab report in pre-lab lecture so pay attention
Lab reports are long, & so are the labs. Some are fun though. The class requires a ton of prep. Lab report, pre-lab, study for daily quiz, etc. Ok class & Faith is very helpful!
Shes really intimidating at first but as the semester goes on you realize shes actually nice and funny. Her prelabs are hard and so are the quizzes at the beginning of class. The reports are long but they get a lot easier as the semester goes on.
Can't avoid her if you're taking chemistry, but she's a great lab instructor so there's no need to avoid. I enjoyed her sense of humor, and she is always helpful in lab and outside of lab. TAs are pretty terrible and are big sticklers with grading. Try to take Thursday afternoon lab if you can. Lab report EVERY week, but it'll help in the end.
FATIH IS AWESOME!! You don't have a choice whether or not to take her if you have to take chemistry, but that's totally fine because she is wonderful. She is intimidating at first, but once you get to know her she is very funny and extremely hlepful, especially if you go to her office hours. I definitely recommend her!
She is a great instructor and knows a lot about what she is talking about. She is very helpful when needed. BUT SHE THINKS HER CLASS IS THE ONLY CLASS EVERYONE IS TAKING. The work load for her lab is outrageous and way too much for a 1 credit class. It will take you about 8 hours to complete the pre-lab and lab reports. SO UNNECESSARY.
Faith is my favorite teacher at JCU. She's awesome because she's willing to do anything to make sure her students succeed, including making a lot more work for herself. She's very knowledgeable, and she's hilarious, which is very nice in the lab sometimes, because it keeps things from getting too serious.
The work load is ridiculous, but you will learn your way around a chem lab. She was way more helpful than my o chem lab prof. TAs are horrible and clueless. Lab sucks but you will survive and do well as long as you persevere.
Wonderful lady! Extremely sarcastic and is hilarious. Probably the most work I had out of all my classes, as a prelab worksheet, prelab video, and lab report are due every week. Lots of preparation and work outside of class to prepare for lab and the weekly quiz.
Faith will seem intimidating at first but she is so awesome once you get to know her. Also stop by her office because she is fun to talk to and is really helpful!
Gen chem lab. She has a monopoly on it, because she is great at teaching it. There is a huge learning curve at the start, more work than I have ever done for a class. But for a good reason, she gets your ready for your future courses. Extremely helpfully if your go to her office hours(which are at more times than she lists). She is sarcastic.
Can't stand her. She is not approachable at all for help. If you are confused, she gets mad. And it's annoying because he pre-lab videos are terrible so I always don't know what to do in lab. If she was at least nice, lab wouldn't be bad.
Faith is fantastic. Yes, it's going to be a lot of work. But that's what success is all about. She seems kind of mean at first, but does a great job at TEACHING. she's also fantastic at taking the anxiety off before performing experiments. Just give her a chance and talk to her, she's always willing to help and does a great job at it
Awesome! She is hilarious ! Very fair and straight forward. You must put effort into this class. She is awesome.
Faith is so great, I really enjoy her as a professor and as a person to talk to outside of class. You have to be tough to get along with her - if you're expecting a warm and fuzzy approach, you won't get it. The workload is really heavy - a full report, quiz, and long prelab every week. Tough course, but you will leave it a better scientist.
I loved Faith. She is super tough at first just because chem lab is really intimidating, but halfway through the first semester I loved her. She was never the issue, the TA's are what can kill your grade. Get to know them and ask them questions and you'll be okay! Learn from your mistakes, labs will come to you so quickly after the first month.
Faith is the best professor at JCU!! Most people don't like the class because they don't wanna put in the work which isn't even too much. Be happy that she is the only one teaching Chem Lab. Prepares you for the future and cares a lot. GO IN FOR HELP, she is EXTREMELY helpful, she seems mean but really is not at all, very nice. She is hilarious!!
Faith was extremely rude and unapproachable throughout the semester. She was unprofessional and constantly had a very negative attitude. She spent class time either surfing the web or gossiping about students with the TAs. Ridiculous. Disappointed in JCU for keeping this lady. Lab could have been so much better if it was a different professor.
Looking at these reviews, I highly doubt that all of them are from her students. Faith was far from a good professor. She talked down to her students and the labs are reused year after year-makes me wonder what she does all year. I am surprised that she has been at the school for over 25 yrs. Step down an let an unemployed PhD individual step in.
Faith is the best!! She is the funniest professor I've had. Do not wait until the night before to do your prelab test and your lab report because it kinda takes forever. Expect a 10 point quiz before every lab. Laugh at her jokes they are funny.
Too much work for a one credit class. Class isn't hard, just lots of work. Be thorough and punctual with everything.
I absolutely LOVE Faith! Best professor ever! She is very approachable once you get to know her. The TAs are not the best but you will survive if you put in the time.
Faith is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! Do not listen if people will tell you bad things about her, she is one of the nicest person at JCU.
Faith is by far the best professor you will have in the chemistry department. She genuinely cares about her students. Many think she's difficult, but you can't expect to show up to a lab without preparing for it. There's a difference between having an question and wanting her to do your lab. 10/10 recommend. Just watch her videos and ask for help.
Faith is hilarious but her class is pretty demanding for a one credit class. TA's are a mixed bag; some are tough, others are easy on grading. You don't have a choice but to take her, so get ready to work.
An unbelievable outrageous amount of work for a one credit class. TAs are very picky on lab-reports. Although Faith is funny in class, unless you are willing devote countless hours to this class, avoid if possible.
This class definitely caught me by surprise. Its once a week but the work load is a lot before lab. Make sure to get started on it all week and not wait till the night before. She is very sarcastic funny and lighthearted and explains labs very thoroughly. You can get a good grade if you put in the work and do all of it thoroughly
She is always there fore help but assigns a lot of work. very nice and helpful tho. TA's grade kinda hard
Dr. Whitworth puts so much effort into her work. You can tell how much she cares for the students in the work she puts in. Yes lab is hard but she gives us so much to help us through the class. Lab was the hardest class I took this semester but also one of the most enjoyable.
Lots of work but straightforward. Grading criteria close to participation until the final exam. Beware the final.
Professor Whitworth, or Faith as she prefers to go by, runs her chem labs in a very systematic way, the only way to succeed is to adapt to the structure. She has a plethora of pre-lab assignments and a big postlab due every week, make sure you stay on top of your time. Read over the labs so you understand what is happening and fly under the radar.
Mrs. Whitworth was a pretty good professor. The lecture period could be boring but the labs were done well, and she was definitely willing to help you if needed. The labs reports were very long and took forever, but it is doable if you break it up over a couple of days. Her final is a big cumulative test, so definitely study for that
She is an amazing professor! Yes, it is a lot of work, but it is very organized and she is very clear what is due when. If you try you can get out of lab early.
I had her for gen chem 1 and 2 lab, and it felt like 6 credits . I would spend 6-10 hours weekly doing the lab reports, pre lab quiz, pre lab notes, studying for in class quizzes. She doesn't realize that her excessive busy work is detrimental. Speaks very condescendingly. TAs play a big role in grade. Procrastinating is a guaranteed C or lower.
She is a tough-love type of professor, (nothing like Wain). She doesn't hold your hand and the first couple of labs are kind of a "trial by fire" but once you know what she expects, it's a rhythm that is easy to get into. Both her and the TA's are very helpful. Pretty funny and engaging in lab
Faith is like a person who throws you in a pool and tells you how to swim without you knowing prior. Really tough first semester, pray the GA's like you. Second semester is a LOT easier due to knowing her expectations. Get on her good side. Finals don't really matter, you can fail and it won't effect your grade at all. Hard to study for tho.
Faith's class was a lot of work and most of it was redundant with writing in the lab book and then typing it. But Faith is a great person and actually slightly amusing. Unfortunately I did hate it but it was definitely helpful.
She is a great professor. She is very helpful if you email her questions or go to her office hours. She wants students to succeed and understand chemistry. If she sees you are trying she will be willing to help, but don't expect her to hand out answers. She clearly outlines what you're supposed to do in lab each week, and explains concepts well.
Faith is a tough love professor, The first few weeks I got awful grades but once I go the handle of her expectations the work was manageable. Prepare to spend 5-7 hours on pre and post lab for her class. All of her criteria is clearly laid out and and it was easy to follow and do well. In class quizzes are hard so don't feel bad if you get a 0/10
She likes making fun and being mean to disabled people. For a chem lab teacher I can somewhat understand since it seems like a very miserable profession. No wonder she grades and acts the way that she does.
I would change my major if I had to take another class, with Faith Whitworth as my professor, regardless of the major. She is not a good teacher. Her TA's do all the heavy lifting and she does nothing.
The workload was insanely heavy and took up most of my time. I would typically work on work for this class for about 10 hours a week. Along with the workload, Faith is not a very nice person. She made me cry three times in one lab; all I did was ask for help. If I had to take another class with her, I would 100% transfer.
The first 5 weeks made me rethink all life choices but after that it was somewhat livable. You will spend 10-20 hours of work outside of class but she is helpful if you go to her. A lot of people drop pre-med because of her. Do not be surprised when your class is empty by the end of the year.
This lab will consume 4-6 hours of your life outside of lab period / week, and she is an incredibly hard grader, but it is also somewhat useful and un-skippable material. In her office hours she's super knowledgeable and kind, and it definitely helps to ask her questions instead of your TA's during lab, because the TA's are usually awful at helping
-explains concepts very clearly -though needs clarity in her writing and lots of spelling errors.. ironic how that is counted as a grade for lab reports -few of the TA's hired do not really have a solid foundation of chemistry, which is bad when you let them grade prelabs + post labs -not ADHD friendly and will be the most stressful class taken lol
Faith is a great lab instructor. Her lab is very organized unlike the intro bio labs. However, you will be spending 6-8 hours before and after lab doing work; this course is no joke. Many pre-med students will be dropping pre-med after taking this class (or if they fail out). Anyways, you dont really have a choice of who to take, but she is awesome
Good person and teacher, but is a VERY picky grader. You'll lose points for any little mistake you make. Not to mention the 5+ hours of homework every week. First month is STRESSFUL. But, if you prepare for lab, you should be fine. Reading manual, taking pre-lab notes, a pre-lab quiz, and her pre-lab lecture each lab are unnecessarily repetitive.
the workload is awful. prelab notes sometimes take 2 hours, prelab quiz, setting up lab notebook, postlab. always felt like I was behind in her class because theres so much work. shes amazing, love her as a person, just hope you get a good TA. TAs do all the grading and can make or break it for you in the class. get on their good side.
The coursework is challenging for a 1-credit class, but expectations are clear. The professor provides detailed outlines, is very accessible outside of class, and genuinely wants students to succeed. Lab directions are straightforward, and TAs are always available to help.
