I love ms. firtha. She's so friendly and tries really hard to get us excited about science. She's fair, the test resemble the homework. I would like more practice in class though
Firtha is an amazing chemistry teacher! Her lectures are very interesting and if you read the chapters in advance, everything is crystal clear. In lab, she will help you by guiding you through an issue without giving away the answer so you can really understand what you are doing. This course is study intensive, so do it and you will be fine.
Good teacher. She's really helpful and approachable. She answers all questions asked. Her lectures are good. Lots of studying involved. Tests fair.
I love, love love, ms firtha. I went to her office every week and she didnt seem bothered at all she was very helpfull. Chemistry requires a lot of studying but she'll help you along the way. Great teacher
Not a tough grader. Very considerate and gives points away when you argue. I've take both her 101 and 102 classes. I got a B in 101 and an A in 102. 4 test + final, and she gives chapter quizzes that are mostly for groups. Her lectures are quite boring, and she just reads off of the ppts. You'll have to do the hw and teach yourself the material.
Reads off the powerpoints. You should probably teach yourself a lot of it, but you can approach her and ask questions.
Firtha is academically generous. She frequently offers extra credit both on tests and after tests. She is patient, and is always open to answer questions. Bare in mind, she does not spoon-feed. This is a science course. She expects students to come to class prepared, with questions to present. Her exams are fairly straight forward, MC+short ans.
Expects college level work for a college level class. If you do not ask any questions she assumes you know how to do the work. If you slack off on homework, studying or procrastinate you will not pass. Tests are tough but easy if you can do every problem in the book without issue. Very helpful if you ask for help... be specific.
I never took Chemistry in highschool, so this class was extremely difficult with no background. I worked my butt off and it was very rewarding when I did well, and very disappointing when I did poorly. Do all the homework, or you will fail. The lectures are sometimes long and tedious, labs are pretty easy. Wonderful person outside of class however.
One of the better chemistry professors at MSJC. She's very easy to understand and explains things well. It's harder to follow her if I don't read ahead of time. The tests are fair: part multiple-choice and part written. She gives partial credit. If you don't do the work you won't pass. She gets frustrated if you are not putting in your work
Knowledgable in Chemistry, but mediocre as a teacher. She expects you to do her job for her by reading all lectures before they are discussed, pretty much defeating the purpose of showing up to lectures or her job. Labs can be tough. Wish I could say more, but I would only retake because there isn't any better professor, which isn't saying much.
Three exams and a final. Extra credit on the tests. Very helpful if you ask questions. Expects you to do work outside of the classroom (standard college expectation). Gets to the point. Doesn't read slides. Would take again.
The homework was a little confusing at first, but once you start using it, its ok. The book isn't the best. I use a lot of online videos. She goes a little fast in class but she doesn't use powerpoint so that helps. She is really approachable and answers all my questions. Her lectures are straight forward. Extra credit on test, usually homework.
Professor Firtha is great. For 107 she breaks down the material simply. She was always open to questions and friendly. Quizzes every week. This is a hard class but I'm glad I had her.
Professor Firtha is amazing. She is very knowledgeable and this is a very challenging course. Be prepared to study a lot and stay engaged. It is possible to pass but only with the upmost dedication, unless youre a brilliant genius and Chemistry comes easily to you.
Ms firtha was great. She was super friendly and willing to answer questions. I was scared to approach at first but she's really nice once you start talking to her. The tests are hard and the subjects hard. I had to study a lot more than I thought I would. Go to SI. It helps.
Easy class. Straight forward. Online homework. Answers email questions quickly. Lectures a a little dull but I would take her again.
Professor Firtha is a fair teacher. She highlights the material needed for the tests and gives you all the information up front. No surprises. Lectures can be dull.
She is an amazing professor. She really wants you to understand and succeed, however, do not expect her to cater to you. She teaches at a college level and expects you to articulate and conduct yourself as such. I would definitely take her again.
Worst learning experience I've ever had. No syllabus outlining the semester's work. Lecture Portion of thw class is her just standing up front asking if anyone has questions about something no one has ever learned before. Lab Portion of the class included 2 separate teachers that have never performed the labs before, as clueless as the students.
Firtha is great! She may be intimidating at first but I dont think so considering behind all of that is a person who is patient with a kind heart despite getting frustrated quite easily because a lot of students arent trying in the class itself. She makes it entirely easy and makes you work for it! I recommend her 100%
Awesome professor, exams are very fair as she tells you EVERYTHING that is going to be on them. Some of the exams have extra credit questions that are usually easy. Very animated personality that is very approachable. She is highly educated in her field and will answer any question successfully that you throw at her. Definitely would recommend!
My god this gal is GREAT! She care alot about her students. Advice, be sure to study everyday. I try to clam everything in 3 or 4 days before every test. BIG MISTAKE DAWG! Her test is tough, everything she mentioned in class or lab is fair game. But because of her, I was able to get A in my O-chem. She set my chemistry's foundation right.
Firtha's lectures were terrible and didn't explain the chemistry concepts well at all. I never felt prepared for the tests or the labs. Take literally anyone else.
You will need to put in work but no more than should be expected for college Chem. Do the HW because she uses it or similar problems on quizzes and tests.
This was my first time taking Chem and I had to work for my grade. She was always available during office hours and even held some informal study sessions. Do the HW even though it isn't mandatory. Amazing prof would highly recommend.
She really does care for her students. The labs are easy points along with the quizzes. The exams are not too bad, but make sure to study. She reviews what is going to be on the test the class before, so there are no surprises on the exams. Probably will never have a chemistry teacher as good as her.
Hands down one of the toughest (in expectations) on the student actually knowing the material. Also one of the best instructors I have ever had. She is tough but extremely fair. If you are NOT serious about the class, do NOT take this instructor. She should, however, be sought after by people who want to take something away from the end of a class
She is an awesome professor! She will explain things to you in so many ways so you could understand. She never makes you feel stupid even if you ask stupid questions. If you take this teacher don't think there will be any curve.
Firtha is a good professor. For chem 101, 3/4 of my class dropped because they couldn't handle the rigors -- it's a very challenging course. Be prepared to teach yourself material when needed, lots of homework and studying. As long as you ask questions and stay consistent, you'll do fine. Though beware, she makes you calculate your own grade!
Fairly easy if you attend lecture, take notes, and do the homework (which is optional). Everything on the test is covered in lecture or in a small lecture during lab session. She also is very approachable during lab and office hours. I only got a B because I didn't study at all for the final. I suggest you study for the final
If it is your first time taking chemistry this class it is going to be hard. She will only offer a one time extra credit that will help on your test/quizzes portion. If you are not 65% or higher in the portion of test she will not pass you at all she is straight up being real. Even if you do good on labs and other participations it will not count.
Don't be fooled. Yes, she is difficult and yes she will make you work for your grade regardless of your major. However, she is fair 100% and tells you exactly what you need to study for the exams. Any chemistry class requires time, effort, and lots of repetition. HIGHLY recommend for any STEM or nursing major to prepare you for future challenges.
You will need to put in work but no more than should be expected for college Chem. Do the HW because she uses it or similar problems on quizzes and tests. Quizzes are given every week on the most recent material and those points can really help your overall grade
She is very knowledgeable about the subject and is an awesome and fair professor. Chemistry is hard, let's face it. Some students want to blame the professor, but being good at chemistry takes a lot of effort and some don't want to admit that they simply didn't want to put in the time. Get real. Maybe you should look into another major.
IF YOU ARE TAKING CHEM AT MSJC, TAKE IT WITH FIRTH!! She is so patient and kind. She WANTS you to pass the class so she WILL help you understand the material as long as you are showing her you are trying! She is so sarcastic and funny during lecture. I've told all of my friends to take her course and they passed with a B or higher!
If you're nervous about chemistry, or if you're planning on getting into the upper divisions of chemistry, I would highly recommend Dr. Firtha. She is by far the most genuine professor, if not the most genuine person that I've met. She'll answer any questions that you have, and is very easy to talk to.
Firtha was a very difficult professor to learn from. Lectures on her iPad, difficult to understand what she wrote down. Unfortunately you feel like you can not approach her or ask questions without getting a snarky comment in return. I was not even sure I would be able to get a C in her class and I am a straight A student and somehow got an A
Posts iPad notes so if you miss a class you k is what happened. Tests can get difficult, but if you study you should be fine (she tells you what will be on the exam), gives partial credit on exams. Makes lecture and lab enjoyable. Makes your money spent on the course worthwhile. Would recommend. Would take again.

I found her to be a great professor. I can understand why others may have had difficulty understanding her teaching style, but if you try to understand chemistry and not memorize the information you will do fine. She encourages students to do practice problems, which i believe is why I did so well in the class.
Chem 107 was not easy as inorganic, organic, and biochem were consolidated into this course, however, Professor Firtha gave good lectures, and provided added materials in Canvas. Reading before class and watching youtube helped me cope. She didn't check attendance but missing a class or 2 could set you back because there was so much info passed.
The best Chem teacher in MSJC. I understand everything from her. She is easy in grading, she gives partial credit in tests/quizzes if you understand some of the problem. She always gives bonus points in tests. She is very friendly and cares. I dont usually rate an instructor but I had to do it this time to thank her for a great job.
She is very nice and funny but if you aren't planning on studying then you will not pass, i withdrew from her class because i started of in a bad start not having ever taken chem but i did get to learn a lot from her unfortunately i was always behind, take her shes great but make sure you try your best.
This professor was great. She made the material easier than the book. When we went onlien she was even better. She really cared about the students and even gave us a number to call just in case. She flexible and caring and worked with my schedule. She let me take the exam on a sunday.
Don't be scared away by this class! Farah is helpful but I can see why her style can be confused with her style. She can be a bit disorganized but has a lot of help posted on Canvas. Switching to online format wasn't bad: live Zoom lectures. A LOT of material though since the class is a hybrid of 3 chemistry classes.
Farah Firtha is one of the best Chemistry professors at MSJC. She is very kind. Pros: She gives partial credit on tests and quizzes. She is very kind and cares a lot about her students. Cons: She lectures on her tablet, and tends to go very quickly through her lecture. But, if you want a challenge, take Professor Firtha!
Hands down, one of my top 3 teachers I've ever had in my college career. I never took Chemistry in high school but she totally makes me want to switch majors, however I won't (because Bio is better, Sorry lol). But I recommend her 100%. I would love to take another class she teaches too! She is very helpful, responsive and just awesome!
She was one of my best instructors at MSJC. She didnt make the class an easy A but she did make it possible, you will just have to put in the work. Her teaching method is also unique and might be hard to follow at first but ask her for help & shes more than willing to help you understand the materialwhich she is very knowledgeable in!
good at chem/math? take this class. struggle with chem or math? pick a different professor. She's vague and she can be quite rude. It feels like she doesnt care about the students success. You WILL teach yourself the material. I like to work for my grade, I learn better that way, but this prof makes YOU teach an already hard class to yourself.
Not the easiest class, but the teacher is funny, engaging, and explains everything you need her to. Great teacher, amazing class. Love the discussions. It took some time to get oriented but I like the way she set it up.
Doesn't lecture at all for online classes. You must learn everything on your own on youtube. Extreme work load. Not available to help.
She's a sweetheart, really helpful and flexible with due dates. Even with covid, she's really helped so much with lil YouTube videos. She replies really quickly.
Excellent instructor who works behind the problem to make you understand the foundation of it. She is incredible in simplifying everything for students to explain it smoothly. Do what she says and you will get an A. I wish if she teaches Chem 102.
She's accommodating. I wish I could take all of the chem series with her. Always keep up with sapling. I skipped a couple chapters home works completely bombed a quiz. I made a mistake and forgot to do home work. She let me make-up the home work.
This was one of the hardest classes I've taken, but it is very doable. She is a really good professor and I would 100% recommend taking her. If you have any questions or need help just ask her. This class requires a lot of time studying outside of class. Depending on your schedule you can definitely get an A. It's alot of information so be ready.
Prof Firtha is a very kind person however has online courses in a self-taught format, which, for chemistry, is a nightmare. She is pretty disorganized. It was always a 50/50 chance whether or not my classmates and I would get an email back from her. Im a straight A student and I had a tough time. I need to brush up before my next chem course.
Long story short: this was my 3rd attempt at Gen Chem I after dropping it once in the Spring and then getting a low grade in the Summer last year but with Farah, she made the class self taught with a lot of Youtube, PPTs, and additional practice quizzes and fun discussions. Because of her, I wouldn't be passing with an A. Now onto Gen Chem II. :)
I'm a nursing major and I've NEVER liked chemistry, but she totally changed my mind about it. I really liked the discussions. Best science teacher I've ever had! As long as you're willing to put in the work, you'll do just fine! She was very available and would make time to meet with within the same day.
Prof Firtha is just okay in my opinion. She did not even try to do a single zoom to teach the class. I taught myself and Chegg helped me with the calculation steps, which I hope she did. She gave lots of lab experiments that you can only answer by searching online, there was no explanation or any guidance from her. I got an A by working on my own.
Hated this class the first 2 weeks bc she seemed strict. After that, she is the sweetest lady ever! Helps a lot to go to office hours. Her tests also include 1 or 2 concept questions so read the book. Shares her stories related to chem! lenient on sigfigs. TAKE HER!
instructor who works behind the problem to make you understand the foundation of it. She is incredible in simplifying everything for students to explain it smoothly. Do what she says and you will get an A. I wish if she teaches Chem 102.
This was an online class because of COVID. She provides opportunities to receive extra points. Has a lot of resources like video lectures. Also lets assignments be turned in after the due date until the exam for that unit.
(FA-2020) We had 1 chapter to read, 1 Sapling HW, 1 discussion, 1-2 labs, 1 quiz, and sometimes 1 challenge problem. This class is too hard and too much work for an Intro to Chem class. Quizzes & Exams are hard. Video lectures are not helpful. Sapling is vague and not helpful. You may have to make videos twice. Office hours are quite helpful.
This is the best experience I have had with a teacher since covid moved everything online. She is amazing at answering questions, and is available outside of classroom time. Super helpful and engaging. The class itself is not too hard, but it is a lot of algebra. Test are very similar to the practice exam!
Very clear grading criteria. Her exams and quizzes were straightforward. She does not try to trick you. She's a pretty relaxed professor and gives you a solid foundation. There's no busy work. On top of that she is pretty nice and understanding. I definitely recommend.
Her lectures are great. She goes over problems in her lessons so you should understand everything by the end of each video. She is pretty laid back as long as nobody in the class cheats, so don't cheat. Overall, it's pretty chill. I highly recommend her class.
I took Professor Firtha for Chem 100 and I enjoyed this class a lot. She is always willing to help you out. A very kind woman that cares for her students and loves the subject she teaches. I would definitely take her again!
This was by far the most difficult class i've ever taken. But I learned so much! Professor Firtha is great! You can get a good grade in her class by doing 100% of the work and all of the extra credit. I got a C+ in Exam 1 B- in Exam 2 and B in exam 3 the final I barely got a B and I still got an A in her class. This class requires tons of time!
She made chemistry fun and easy to understand. His office hours are very helpful especially while having to take this class online due to COVID.
She puts way to much info on canvas that you seriously don't know where to start, her videos do not make sense & you can't follow along the worksheet since its written in with her scribbles from her iPad, & due dates don't line up w/syllabus. I know summer class is a heavy load but expect a lot of work from her.
Probably my favorite professor so far out of the 8 I've had. Truly cares about her students and them doing well. Works with her students and provides plenty of extra credit, but still makes you earn your grade. Would love to have her again!
Great professor who truly cares about the success of students. The lectures and labs are very clear and organized. Grading is fair and if you pay attention in class, the exams and homework assignments are incredibly easy. Definitely show up to office hours if you struggle with any of the material and need help.
She is a very helpful teacher and goes out of her way to make sure that you know exactly what will be on the test. She does not tell you to study things that you will not be tested on. She is not easy but she will really do her best to make sure that you understand the material.
Took it during summer and although it was a lot of work, it was easy! Theres a test and quiz every week, lab assignments due everyday as well! The lecture videos are a lot but dont procrastinate on those! The professor is amazing and i learned a lot from her! Shes probably my favorite professor
Firtha is great. She tells you clearly what you need to improve on, and you can see yourself improving. She is caring and kind of silly. Her office hours are very supportive and go more into detail of a topic you need. The homework isn't that bad. Would Def take again
She is really nice and cares about her students. She is really passionate about chemistry and it shows. This class is the hardest class I have taken and the homework can get time consuming. Be prepared to study. However you will learn a lot in this class too.
i took this class in 8 weeks, it was very overwhelming at first. definitely try your best. there are prerecorded lectures, shes very understanding/caring. wants her students to succeed. be prepared to take couple hours of your day for labs/assignments. professor was great !
Horrible!!! One of the worst teachers I ever have at MSJC, don't take her, there is more amazing teachers at MSJC that care and actually love to teach. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
I thought she was an amazing Prof to have especially while being online. She was willing to work with her students and their schedules and I loved how her lectures were posted so you could watch them over and over. I would 100% take another class taught by her. Great Chem 100 professor for both repeating and new Chem. students.
I don't know how her reviews are so high because my experience was awful. Her Canvas shell is painfully unorganized. She provided many ways to learn the material but they all only had partial info & were unhelpful. Her tests contained material we never covered & the time limit for them was way too short. I relied on Youtube to learn the material.
Her lectures were lighthearted and easy to understand. She is very understanding and considerate. It's like she actually wants to see her students succeed!! She answered emails fast and was generous with extensions. I wish I could take her for all my sciences! Chemistry is a hard class but if you put in the work you'll do well.
This professor NEVER will answer your emails and barely grades until the end. You will never know what your grade is. I'm in the 8-week accelerated course for summer and have sent her multiple emails with no prevail. Good luck. Also, you have to pay 50 dollars for the absolute worst hw program I have ever used.
Took it during summer and although it was a lot of work, it was easy! Theres a test and quiz every week, lab assignments due everyday as well! The lecture videos are a lot but dont procrastinate on those! the professor is amazing and i learned a lot from her! Shes probably my favorite professor. Responds quickly
Professor was easily my favorite professor I've ever had. She was kind and funny, her lectures were easy to listen to even though I took it online. It was easy to tell she cared about her students and wanted everyone to succeed. Her office hours were very helpful and she wasn't intimidating. 100% recommended taking her!
Required an expensive textbook in order to access homework, all exams are timed so you need to be quick with your calculations. The homework was extremely time consuming, at least for me. I would spend an average of like 4 hrs on homework alone. Other than that, pretty average professor.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! Look for a different Chem prof PLEASE! This instructor was so unorganized and unprofessional. She dresses up in costumes in all her lecture videos which is just weird and extremely distracting. The lecture videos start halfway through her talking and make absolutely no sense. Dropped d/t the lack of professionalism.
She is the best Chem teacher I've had yet! She's a great lecturer who will take her time on a topic if you are stuck, very accessible inside and outside of class. A lot of work, so tread cautiously if you have a busy schedule. The tests are slightly more difficult than the problems from class, but do textbook problems to practice!
She is a good person. Her grading is not clear, if you don't do the extra credit, it hurts your grade. Everything is all online. The part 2 exams where show a picture of the work is unclear with her grading. Honestly, from all the other professors, she might be the best one to take. Be prepared to do a lot of work.
I dont know if it was me joining the class late, but this class was really heavily work loaded. I had whole days dedicated to me catching up. Note, this is the 8 week course that I am taking, so I did expect a lot of work. Although, she didnt really seem to care that me joining the class late caused me so much stress.
Do EVERYTHING to enroll in her course. She's smart, entertaining, KIND, & a GREAT instructor. Sell a kidney to take her class. She makes chem make sense & something I genuinely loved! Quizzes/test questions are learned in PP/lecture. Her canvas is SO organized.
She's okay professor. What i didn't like about her is her grading system is not clear, she has so much unedited work. she uses old lecture videos from the year 2020. It would be nice if she edited her old videos and work. If you dont do the extra credit work , it WILL HURT YOUR GRADE. I would send her messages and sometimes she doesn't respond!
Not my favorite. Her lectures were so outdated, and her modules were unorganized. Her grading is unclear, and she does not offer any feedback on questions that you miss on her written assignments. She does offer extra credit and the discussions, but the Macmillan online tool ($50) was so annoying to format with. Be prepared to teach yourself lol
I love that she has a flexible due date policy. It's so helpful. I find her visors helpful but I used the PowerPoints more often. She was really quick to reply to emails. I liked her structure once I got used to it. The discussions were fun. Would recommend.
