One of the best profs on campus. A brilliant lecturer. Clear, engaging, organized, funny. I learned so much from his human rights class last Spring.
The instructor was very knowledgeable. His biography online mentions that he believes that our current opinions must be challenged to learn. Knowing this, I am much more likely to take another class...before that I thought he was arrogant, but it makes sense now.
Professor Malekafzali is extremely knowledgable and motivated. Unique perspective. Even though class started early in the morning I looked forward to his class.
Thank you for a great term and one of the most honest and informative lectures I have had. At first it seemed to be overly critical but learning factually and critical of both sides changed a lot of my opinions. Take the class if you can.
This class has lit a fire in me and these issues are definitely something I will continue to pursue. Thanks for everything Professor Malekafzali
I learned a lot from this course and enjoyed it despite not getting a good grade. Professor Malekafzali was very fair in how he described previous events, and for sensitive issues and topics he was unbiased. This class opened my eyes to North African politics, and had a very respectable professor leading the class. All around great.
I enjoyed North African Politics a lot and that is due to Professor Malekafzali. He was very fair and unbiased in class and on sensitive issues, took all questions and lead great discussion. Seems like he genuinely wants students to do well. Professor Malekafzali clearly knows a lot about the subject, take the class if you can!
Dr. Malekafzali is an engaging professor who's passionate about middle east conflict. I'm a Jewish student who identifies with both the Palestinian and Israeli side and I feel that he brought to the forefront many issues that are typically overlooked. He is not a Holocaust denier as he has been called online but an extremely enlightening teacher.
Never wanted to miss class. Professor Malekafzali structured and taught the class very effectively. Every lecture was interesting as well as eye opening, delving into the deeper issues/events many people aren't aware of. I would highly, highly recommend taking a class of his.
Professor Malekafzali is an excellent prof who clearly cares about his students' education. He was always approachable and forgiving. He encouraged questions, offered multiple points of view, and always had a witty comment to keep the class in good spirit.
If you want to murder your GPA, take his class.3 midterms and 1 final. No study guide. No curve. You must memorize every single words from textbook, articles, and his lectures. He makes his students to pay most of their time to his class and forget their other classes. He is the worst teacher in UO
Yes, if you are looking for grade handouts, or pad on the back for mediocracy, then you should look elsewhere. I am working hard and getting good grades and learning more than ever. It is not the instructor's fault if you have taken more than your social schedule allows. Grow up. You are in College.
never post important things on bb, so many much stuff have to remember, not giving curve
Professor Malekafzali is one of the most kind and informative professors I've ever had. He focuses on important, relevant issues and truly cares about each and every one of his students. Don't take his class unless you are hardworking and open minded. I will definitely be taking one of his classes again.
This professor is very opinionated. He started the first day stating that he only states views based on fact. This is completely untrue. Often Farhad will spew nonsense with clearly bias "sources" and you are expected to take this as fact. For the exams you need to know everything in the book, lecture, articles, videos, etc from his viewpoint.
I have never learned so much in a term about a subject. At first the teaching style was difficult to follow and kee up with. Eventually I understood how to take notes, pay attention to important details, and study formaterials. Overall the style made me a better studier, listener, and student. I don't have anything that I wouldchange about thecour
Most of the class time is spent discussing his political views (far left liberal) and very little time is spent on the course materials. He uses data and statistics that are skewed and from sources that are not trustworthy. The tests are on small details from the textbook. I recommend taking this course with any other professor.
Professor Malekafzali strives to challenge students viewpoints on sensitive issues. Therefore he spends more time presenting what most students would consider an opposing viewpoint. Seeing middle eastern conflicts from a middle eastern viewpoint helped me to grow as a student. While I did not agree with all his views, he graded fair, would retake.
The best professor I have had at the U of O by far. Extremely knowledgeable, genuinely cares about students' success, and an amazing lecturer. I wish he could teach all of my classes!!!
I really enjoy having Farhad as a professor. His expectations for the exams are clear and come both from his lecture and textbook. Although he does share his views, he does it in a way that allows for discussion to either agree or disagree. He is one of my favorite professors at UO and I would take another class with him in the future.
This is a difficult class and requires a good amount of reading and preparation for the exams; although, the knowledge gained from the class makes it worth it. The lectures are easy to pay attention to and he provides many opportunities for the class to participate and have a discussion.
Your entire grade is based off of tests (25% each) but they are not that hard if you do the reading. He will pull questions from the assigned articles and textbook chapters so be prepared for that. Tends to be more liberal but lectures are very interesting and he does a good job stopping if people have questions.
Going to lectures is very important, as there are things on the test that come from in-class discussions. The test questions can be very specific, and it is challenging since your entire grade depends on the 4 tests given, so pay close attention to the readings. Overall, he is very passionate and his lectures are very informative
Dr. M has without-a-doubt been the best professor I've had at the U of O. Every lecture is packed with interesting and important info, the readings compliment what is discussed during classes, and the assignments are challenging (but definitely fair). You'll learn a ton if you put in effort. I really can't say enough good things about PS399 & Dr.M!
Farhad is an absolutely amazing professor and the UO will suffer greatly without his knowledge. Having a teacher from the region of the world in which you are discussing benefits the subject in a number of ways. Professor Farhad has a plethora of knowledge on the subject of ME politics and did a great job in explaining these complexities to us.
The instructor really showed a lot of passion and knowledge on what he was teaching. He really taught the truth and a different perspective rather than the common perspective. He was determined, ambitious, and very intelligent on what he was teaching us. He was also very conversational, approachable, funny, and very helpful and conversational.
He's very interested in the topic, and this is clear, but he fails to spread the interest to his students I feel. Lots of reading for every class and the readings are never discussed in class. The tests, all four of them, are the basis of the entirety of the grade and are based on materials from his lectures, the readings, and the films.
I'm fairly in the middle politically, but even for me this class had intense political bias (extreme left, borderline socialist) and some lectures felt like we were analyzing how terrible America is compared to other countries. Overall an extremely broad, boring and sometimes frustrating class. Also zero study guides for the 2 midterms and final.
Extremely knowledgable about global issues. Turns students off by his passionate stances, but if you're open-minded and thoughtful you will LOVE this professor - speaks a lot about global perspectives, which challenges many Eurocentric narratives. Heavy reading, but if you do it you'll get an A easily.
Farhad was really difficult, and he wasn't very clear on his grading criteria, but if you make an effort to go to him outside of class, and show him that you're working he's really willing to help you out. Expects participation in class.
He doesn't allow students to go to restroom. For any excuses
worst prof i've had at UO. rude in office hours and tells students they just dont understand the material. tests are on random small details of a 200 page reading. ridiculous amount of info to know and give no direction on what to study for tests. doesnt care about students and wont let them leave the class to go to the bathroom or get water at all
One of the worst professors Ive had at UO. Doesnt care about his students. Tests on arbitrary details. Is rude and condescending. Doesnt even grade the final exam, makes TAs do it. Dont take him if you have a choice.
AVOID THIS TEACHER AT ALL COSTS! I have never had a teacher who cares less about his students, he is rude and condescending, his lectures are long and terribly boring and supplemented by an obnoxious amount of outside videos and readings. Study all you want for the exams it doesn't matter because he chooses two things out of 4 weeks of material.
Extremely knowledgeable on the subject and gives really important information that everyone should know. It's too bad he does it in the most boring way possible and doesn't care about students at all. With a vast comprehension of ethics you would hope he would apply it but don't expect anything other than a rude and strict teacher.
While he is a hard grader and there are lots of readings and lectures, he is a great professor. He expects a lot out of his students, but I have found that if you take the time to communicate with him, he will do his best to accommodate you and help you out with what you need. You get what you put into this class.
Professor Malekafzali is strict and makes you work hard, but I learned so much from taking his course. He REALLY appreciates concrete data and references in papers. Pay attention to his feedback! It will greatly help you improve your grades! If you are punctual, know how to follow criteria, and pay attention in lectures, you will do well.
I felt like I learned a lot of meaningful content about the responsibilities of business toward the rest of world. One of the most organized courses in the college of business.
It was not a class, where things were discussed objectively, it was a push of a political agenda upon students. Meanwhile there are only 3 paper grades and 2 exams that determine your total grade.
One of the least helpful and accommodating professors I've ever had. Essentially refused to answer questions in a meaningful way and made instructions so unclear I was confused the whole 10 weeks.
This class structure was extremely difficult for students to engage and understand course content. The entire grade is based off 3 midterms (2 essay questions each), and 3 parts of a group project. He assigns so many readings each week and most aren't even beneficial for midterms. He is a very harsh grader and not willing to make accommodations.
Omg this class was miserable. Overall he is not accommodating at all and is a SUPER strict grader. He doesn't allow any re-dos and overall the class just didn't make any sense at all. The lectures aren't fluid and you can never really understand what you are learning about. I do not recommend :/
This prof was the worst Ive had so far at UO. His instructions are unclear, his grading is unclear, the material is ultimately useless in terms of retention, and he is very condescending and passive aggressive with students. The exams are based upon readings and lectures and basically entail regurgitation of the material. Would not recommend him.
way too much lecture. He's a really great guy and knows his stuff, but its a bit info overload. The reading load is extremely heavy with around 200 pages a week. I learned alot but it was alot of work.
This class was awesome. If you are actually serious about learning and put the time in to doing thoughtful work, you will be rewarded.
This is the worst professor I've had in three years. It seems like he actually wants all his students to fail. He is condescending, unhelpful, and frankly rude. He is completely unforgiving and his instructions are unclear. He is unhelpful when reached out to for help and grades extremely harshly. Avoid him if you can.
Awful. Please avoid him if you can even if you have to wait a term to take a class. It seems like no matter how much effort I put into this class I can't improve my grade. He grades really hard and his instructions are really vague. I was really excited for this class but he has completely ruined it. He's also really rude for no reason.
Boring lectures and hard grader
This is my only bad experience with a professor I have had at UO. The other comments explain everything but to summarize: he is very boring, he grades harsh, assigns lots of reading and you dont even use half of them, makes 0 accommodations, and is snarky when you ask questions. I would highly recommended not taking him
Coming from someone who has an A in the class, this professor was a serious pain. I definitely worked hard in the course and deserved the A, but Farhad made the course unenjoyable to say the least. A class average on discussion post was a 65% and that's what you really need to know. Vague criteria, expects details but puts a ridiculous word limit.
He is the most monotone and boring professor I have ever had. He lectures like he has pulled an all nighter everyday and he doesnt get excited about a single topic. The amount of work isnt bad but he grades harsh. Overall I would avoid him if you can.
This is by far the worst course I have taken at the University of Oregon. His content is all over the place and he has no clear structure within his application of material. His bias against certain religions is evident and he misconstrues perspectives that disagree with his. If you can, do yourself a favor and get a different professor.
By far the worst professor I've ever had. Had to take this guy's class twice because the midterm essays are strictly graded, and his flaws are more apparent the second time. He uses the same (AWFUL) recorded lectures, even one that has a full uncut minute of mistakes. I truly don't know what he does; he doesn't grade or make new lectures! RUN
I figured out how to get an A! I'm left of the center politically but in order to get an A, you need to absolutely go as far to the left of the spectrum as possible. You actually have to sacrifice persuasiveness and well-thought-out arguments for positions that are as left as possible even when you don't have concrete supporting evidence.
I know it is the beginning of the term but oh wow. This guy literally puts super small details from the textbook, additional readings, and videos and uses them as questions. Does this guy not know we are required to take his class and we really do not care about the content?
I think the information he lectures about is very very important information. Especially for business majors since many of them lack knowledge of many injustices in the world. However, there is way too much work in this class. I had to work on avg 6-10 hours a week on this one class. Only way to get an A is to read a lot and take reading notes.
Worst professor at the UO business college hands down. Didn't even know how his own test was structured, can't even remember to start zoom meetings until halfway through class. Does not follow through on expectations he sets. He wants to meet you halfway and when you get halfway he is not there. STAY AS FAR AWAY AS POSSIBLE!!!!!
I wouldnt even care if I failed this class. This man should not be a college professor. The number one thing I gather from this class was that he was trying to push his political agenda upon his students, most of which I agreed with. However, he does not teach, he does not try to better his students.
If I could give this professor a 0 I would. He is hands down the worst professor I have had during my time at UO. For the essay portion of our midterm he expected us to quote from 4 articles and a weeks worth of lecture videos that he removed from canvas. He is expecting that we have memorized all of the content in order to quote them. Psychotic.
Horrible, an absolute disgrace. SO much potential, he is so smart but horrible grader.
This professor is the Absolute Worst instructor I have ever had. The class average is 60 and he refuses to curve any of the grades. He does not offer any help to student and when I asked him for help in passing the class he just told me to get better grades which is impossible considering how harsh he grades everything.
Farhad is a very disrespectful and unfair professor. For your midterm and final he will ask you to cite lectures and ~4 readings without being able to read the sources or rewatch the lectures - he restricts access to them on canvas. He is extremely condescending and rude, and asks students to not think but to just repeat his political views. Sad!
Farhad Malekafzali is the worst teacher I have in my life. Don't even take his class to risk your life! His materials is not helpful at all and tough Grader! He gives lots of readings and they are super long! If you miss only 1 citation from his lecture video, he deduct 20 points immediately!
Don't take his class unless you're very passionate about the topic. Very strict grader, requires a lot of reading. Teacher can be condescending, and he lets his own political opinion shine through too often. Nearly impossible to make him change his mind about something or challenge him on his world view without things getting messy.
it's unbelievable. What he does is just give us a bunch of reading and a bunch of lecture videos. It's so absolutely boring. And he won't provide study guide and extra credit assignments. I don't think he is a good professor AT ALL! BORING AND HORRBLE!
Dr. Malekafzali is a leftist and expects you to be one too. This shouldn't be a new experience for college students, many profs are like this. He is only a harsh grader if you don't know how to follow his instructions or if you say things that aren't backed up by the readings in discussions. This class is easy if you can follow directions.
GET READY TO READ AND WATCH A LOT OF LONG VIDEOS ON YOUTUBE. They all count. You'll get discussion every other week. NO discussion or extra credits on grade. if you have 2/10 even if you were sick or in the coma or on the brink of death be sure that your 2/10 will never change whatever the value of X. You better take this class in person.
I really enjoyed this professor! Although the discussion instructions were confusing at first, they made sense the second time and I was able to get 100% on the second discussion. The tests are challenging, but not impossible if you use the quizzes to study. The course material was very interesting, but I also had a preexisting interest in it.
Not good. Class is nothing but lectures and readings. He doesn't teach anything, and is an extraordinarily hard marker considering how little teaching he does. The UO should be embarrassed by him.
Probably the worst professor ive ever had! He relies on his TA for everything, lectures are incredibly monotone and he is not friendly at all. It is obvious he's been using the exact same videos for years. He removes all of the content from canvas prior to the midterms and makes it so hard to study. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!!
took ba325 online and this guy removes all online content before tests and doesnt believe in study guides?? tests based off memorization.
This is one of the first classes where I explicitly failed a final after studying for multiple days. The first midterm alone that equivalates to more than 25 articles. Don't even get me started on the lecture videos as well as 1+ hour videos and documentaries (around 3-4 of them) you're required to watch every week on top of everything.
This giuy is probably the worst Professor I've had spending my time here at the UO. For an online course, this is probably the most amount of work I have done in a class. He removes all the lecture videos as well as the readings before the midterm so you cannot study a week in advance. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS GIUY.
Does not believe in study guides, resubmissions, and extra credit. Does not announce much on Canvas or give you any real guidance on what you should be focusing on between chapters, tests, and quizzes. Do not take a class with this teacher. Very unprofessional and I'm seriously surprised he has a job teaching.
The tests ask questions on information from the tiniest places of articles. The lectures are outdated and the class is based on his political stance. This class does not follow business law. We learn nothing about studying cases & only touch on ethics when convenient. This class is "Let me tell you about my political stance and why it's right".
Farhad, nice guy. Awful teacher. If you don't have to take his class don't do it.
He was probably the worst professor I have ever taken. The class is 100 points total which basically just sets you up to fail because there is no margin for error. The exams are so hard. There is no outlined way to study. He gives little to no resources to help. If the whole class fails he does not care. Great guy though!
Dating back to Pre-K, this is the worst teacher/prof I have ever had. There are three issues: the assignments, the tests, and the grading. Assignments had very unclear instructions and feedback (also only 4 of them so no room for error). Test questions are based on very specific parts of readings. Average score on the final was a 64% yet no curve.
You can spend hours and hours doing the readings and watching the videos and you will still not be set up for success. There's no support, tests do not test knowledge of subjects only memorization of the tiniest details, and he doesn't interact directly with students whatsoever. Do not take a class with this guy.
This guy has rocks for brains
This class isn't suppose to be hard, but this guy loves to make it difficult. The tests are very specific from the millions of lectures and readings you have. And then the position papers say “what do you think,” but it's entirely based of what he believes in. Learning about the subject was cool, but this guy sucks.
I salvaged a C because of how few instructions and expectations he gives for assignments. And then he tends to give tough grading standards on exams and the position paper. Awful teacher, don't recommend if you want to actually learn
Professor Malekafzali's class is unreasonably difficult, with no room for error. Exams require memorizing tiny details from 20+ articles and 5-10 videos, with no study guides or clear instructions. Outdated lectures, biased political opinions, and essays/tests favoring his views make it even worse. It's an unfair, poorly designed course.
Professor Malekafzali is a good teacher. Sure his exams are on minute details, but it is business law. Law is a precise thing and requires detail. His political leanings appear on many supplemental reading and videos, but it does not affect the course. He's accessible and is accommodating. Some of these reviews are too harsh. Study for exams.
Actually the worst professor I've had in college. He teaches whatever he felt like when he recorded his videos and not what any other in person BA325 courses are learning. He also gives difficult tests that focus on tiny details from readings that were weeks ago. His tests were very difficult and there was no curve. TAKE THIS CLASS IN PERSON.
This might be one of the worst professors at UO. Your whole grade is based on three exams with super random questions from a range of six video lectures. He doesn't believe in study guides, curves, or extra credit, and he doesn't even let you look at past work, like your quizzes. I had to take a P/NP because of how terrible this professor is.
Wasting no time sharing his opinion the Professor shared his thought that the U.S. was close to a second Civil War, pointing to 1 candidate. A whole lecture was spent on irrelevant info(history of automobiles)to have 1 Q on the midterm. Some exam Q's were graphs with 0 info to be answered purely from memory from the lecture. Worst Prof I've had @UO
Be prepared for an old school professor, as in everything is handwritten, it is lecture-heavy, and you will not have any study guides as he doesn't find it beneficial for learning. The lecture is 2 hours long and the exams could be on any of the 10000 things he brings up in class. Your only grades are small quizzes once a week and two exams.
Does not provide enough information within his lectures, talks about random stuff that does not correspond to business in any way. Seems as though he does not know what he is talking about half the time and just speaks to hear his own voice. Very pointless assignments that do not provide information that is relevant to the course.
If you see you have this professor immediately switch classes because he gives you no chance to get a good grade unless you can memorize everything you learned in four weeks at a time. There are lectures, readings, videos, graphs and no study guide to go off of or any clue what will be on the exam. worst class/teacher I have ever taken.
I LOVED this class. He is a bit old school, doesn't allow computers or phones, but honestly, I've never been more engaged in a course. All of this material is relevant, and he lectures good pace to keep up with the lecture. There are readings outside of class that you need to do but its not bad at all and the workload is very manageable.
The course is lecture heavy but he does a great job on the way that he lectures and explains everything. His pace is very consistent and he encourages questions and re-explanations. He is overall a really sweet guy. Keep in mind that you are in college and although he has some stricter policies, they are for the benefit of your learning.
This professor is terrible his him having a PhD makes no sense. All his good rating on here are all bots to improve his rating. He does provide any help what so ever and does not teach ng you would learn in any other BA 325 class. Its 30+ videos and articles and 30+ lecture videos and you have to memorize every detail or you will fail.
A lot of people give him a bad rep but that's only because you actually have to try. The class is super interesting, and his lectures are very nicely paced and super interesting. Overall he's an amazing professor. Anyone who rates him bad is just mad they actually had to show up to class every week and genuinely study for tests.
This professor is old school, no laptops/ipads anything of that matter. Tests are on every lecture he gives (2 hours a class), random graphs u see in class, and are based off his opinions not fact. There is no chance in this class unless you study for only this class and heavily engage and participate.
Great Class, Funny Professor
Great professor. He has no bias with his lectures, clearly wants you to learn and wants to foster your curiosity about the world. This class was very lecture, note-taking heavy but is very interesting and teaches you important information. Highly recommend taking him.
This class was super interesting and overall way easy to do well in. Just pay attention and take notes for lectures and read the articles and tests will be super easy. I'm a terrible test taker and was able to succeed just fine, I'd recommend!
The class wasn't my favorite and had a lot of very specific details in the test but overall it is not hard to do well. It's organized well and the lectures aren't too long. Lots of reading but other than that an overall good professor. Would take again.
I never thought I could get a B- in an online class until I took this class. His exams are so specific and difficult for absolutely no reason. The material is so out of date and no longer relevant at all. I don't recommend taking this class with him as the professor. He's nice enough when you contact him.
Person below complaining about a B- clearly just feels like online classes should be no work. Bus law is one of the harder business classes and don't receive a curve. If you took it in person it would've been even harder. It doesn't make sense to complain about a B - the class is very doable.
