I love Dr. Loonat. She is easily the most personable, wonderful, intelligent, witty person I know. She takes time out of her days- and nights!- to Skype, call, or meet with students to make sure they have all they need. She has an exceptional worldview and an outstanding proficiency in her field. In addition, she is a great friend to her students.
There can be a lot of work, and student participation is really important in her class. Farhana does her best to make sure everyone is included, inside and outside of class. The hang
Farhana is a wonderful professor as well as person. She creates a safe space for everyone and makes sure to go out of her way to help them succeed in her class. She provides all kinds of support and is available for questions literally any time of the day. She will alway greet you with a smile/compliment, and never make you feel left out or less.
Two things needed to do well in this class: an open mind and willingness to think critically. I went in expecting to have my worldview challenged and I was not disappointed. The only people I've seen take issue with Dr. Loonat are people who are unable to admit they might not have all the answers before entering class. Highly recommend.
Taken multiple classes with her, amazing teacher. Very passionate and knowledgable about the subject. Encourages discussions and makes sure they're respectful. Very funny and sweet to boot.
Best Prof!
Farhana is super funny and a genuinely nice person, but she's very tough. I struggled (along with many others). She is a tough grader, and her class is based solely on test's and one presentation.
POLS 101 is not difficult if you attend class and pay attention. This professor gives very detailed instructions for the term paper and is a fair grader. No presentations. Just tests and a paper that you get a lot of help with. Great class! Best Prof!!!
Farhana is passionate, thoughtful and funny. She works hard to widen your world view and always takes time to listen to students thoughts. She does not tolerate disrespect and is not afraid to call individuals out on it, making the class a very open environment. The grade was mostly based on one paper but she will help you the whole way through.
Dr. Loonat is one of the most compassionate professors I have ever had. Her philosophy class was very difficult but it is one of the most useful courses you can take. Super informative and deep lectures! She's super tough at grading but she looks out for everyone in her classes because she genuinely cares about what she does. I recommend her class!
I took philosophy with Farhana over Summer '16. The majority of her in-class lectures were engaging and I learned a lot, even though we barely scratched the surface with great philosophers such as Marx and Aristotle. Farhana knows her stuff and her in-class lectures were great as long as you show up to class, take notes, & do the assigned readings.
I think she's a nice person who means well, but she changed the date of the final last minute, her feedback was often very unclear, despite her harsh grading she doesn't provide any extra credit opportunities, she assigned us summaries every week but made them worth zero credit, and summaries were about 1/3 of the work in the class.
This class was very disorganized and fast paced which contributed to a lot of confusion and low scores. She does not provide personal lectures on topics which makes it hard for students to learn and study what she wants us to know from the readings. Poor communication skills when contacted via email, tended to make assignments more confusing.
For this course being only worth 3 credits, it is very writing intensive and requires 1,000 word papers frequently. Difficult to study for quizzes since there is no lectures provided by the instructor on topics. Also difficulties with information provided in textbook, the book in the syllabus is not what is used on the quizzes. Passing takes work.
Dr. Loonat was not a good instructor and did not provide clear instructions or expectations. She does not care about content, but rather grades almost entirely on a "rubric" that she does not provide until after the fact. I am an exceptional student and this class was a challenge not because of the content, but rather the unexplained expectations
Her grading system is crazy. Farhana assigns a reading and the assignment is to voice your opinion or pose a question and then she hammers you with 25% if she disagrees. Be ready to attend a presentation on "white privilege" and apologize for being born a white male as you study white shaming.
Claims to be open and tolerant, but isn't. Claims to promote free discussion, but only when it agrees with her opinions. Uses her position as a professor to spout forth and propagate her own leftist political narrative. Don't bother taking her class, unless you like being indoctrinated and singled out if you disagree with her.
Business focus full time student here. I really wanted to like Loonat, but she made it impossible. I give her a 2 out of respect for the subject though.
Dr. Loonat is a great professor and as long as you can think for yourself and are willing to work you will do great in her class. She isn't a hard grader but isn't easy either. She is very smart and always willing to help people. I highly recommend her.
Doesn't really recognize others views. Can be belligerent at times to students. Swears a lot, sometimes unprofessional.
She is extremely open to new ideas. As long as contributions are respectful and are backed up by a good argument, she will accept any viewpoint. The only beliefs she doesn't like are sexist and racist ones that have no backing of logic. She is also willing to explain why a particular viewpoint lacks backing, allowing you to change your own beliefs.
My world view was allowed to be changed. Praise the prof.
Best class I've taken at SVC
Dr. Loonat is an absolute angel and overall Inspirational teacher! Although she might sometimes enlighten on ignorance, she is always respectful and gracious. Her Political Science Class teaches on some of the most foundational beliefs in Political Science, but Dr. Loonat goes much beyond the basics. Every day is a positive learning experience!
Dr. Loonat is a wonderful professor! She greats every student, every day, as wonderful people. She serves tea in her office which is almost always full of students. Even with her office crammed with students eager for her attention, she makes sure every concern is addressed. I am awed by her management skills. She challenges us, "You /will/ excel."
Dr. Loonat is a wonderful professor. There's a lot of reading, but it's not that bad. Lots of people told me this class would be hard, and it does take a lot of reading and critical thinking, but aside from that, the class is worth taking. She is a great and engaging professor. I would highly recommend taking this course.
Dr. Loonat is not amazing. But as a white male student here is my experience. She cares about her students' well-being. 10% of the grade is about 80% of the work. I recommend you do your research on most things she says as she really speaks a lot from her own viewpoint. Overall, I had an okay experience. The class had a lot of unworthwhile work.
Dr Loonat's class about Domestic Violence may be the most educational Criminal Justice course I've taken. This is not just a lesson about the crime - this class addresses the deeper reasons as to why it occurs. It requires a lot of reading, critical thinking, and an open mind, but it is truly important to understand. CJ students - take this!
I've been reading the reviews which are apparently written by student's that did not read the syllabus. Yes, she's a tough grader, b/c she treats people with the same expectations as someone at a high-end university. She's extremely educated and a clear communicator. She made me a better writer, student, and person. A or no A, great experience.
Dr. Loonat is a very nice as an individual who I am pleased to have come to know over time. That being said as a professor she is somewhat contradictory in her class and in her ideologies. Commanding and forceful she rules her class with an iron first and doesn't suffer fools lightly. She is quite intense and is somewhat forceful in her beliefs.
I tried to take this class both online and in person and both were a horrible experience. You can work for HOURS on one assignment and it is just not enough. Words can not describe what an awful teacher she is. Would never take a class with with her again and I strongly suggest you don't either.
Extremely opinionated. Skewes information to suit a political agenda. Not objective in any way and not respecting of different beliefs.
Not a hard class, however it is easy to miss understand her. If you write about what she says in her lectures you will get a 100% easy. Also, if you take this class as a white male do not get offended. She says a lot of stuff about white males that could easily be understood as rude or offensive, while she is just trying to convey her opinion.
literally on the first day Loonat told us a story about how a young white male waiter didn't make eye contact with her at a restaurant when visiting her table and because of this he was asserting white male supremacy on her. This is the most ridiculous statement.
Loonat made us take a 23 question test the second day of class ABOUT THE SYLLABUS. One of the questions was Is the work in the class busywork? That question literally is busywork because it doesn't relate to any of the topics you'll be learning in class.
She causes the class to do weekly at least 5 assignments that you have to spend at least 4 or 5 hours researching and writing 1000 words, if you plan on taking this with any other class, good luck.
You can work for hours on an assignment to meet the 1000 word limit and will either get only ten points or none if it's not up to her standards. The assignments themselves aren't too hard, but they are ridiculously time-consuming. This is not the course for people that want a life outside of their classes.
PHIL 215. On ground . Eye opening content. So many ethical dilemmas I never thought about, but now I know how to structure really solid arguments. The paper format she gives helped me with my university applications too (she spent hours helping me with those too).
Dr Loonat has changed my life forever. Everyone who has the opportunity to take her classes absolutely should. She is the most understanding professor alive. She will work with you about anything, you just have to show up during office hours. She is just, honest, and absolutely not racist as some have claimed. She really cares about students.
This class made a quite impact in my life. I've always had family issues that would hinder my studies and the pursuit of what I wanted for myself. This class gave me courage to stand up for myself, and I was able to change my family's views even if its just a little bit. Now I am able to pursue the path that I want for myself
Dr. Loonat is a great professor who is educated and knows a lot of information. Yes, there are readings that need to be done every day, but if you need help understanding them she always responds to emails. She gives great lectures and is a walking encyclopedia. She truly cares about her students.
Dr. Loonat will go out of her way to make your grade lower no matter what you might do. I struggled to hold an A and just because I did poorly on one assignment I was dropped to a B- from a solid A. She would go off subject often during lectures and expects you to take notes on every word. Will not address emails thoroughly Would not recommend.
Dr. Loonat is the worst teacher I have ever taken a class from. If you try to ask a question she would go off on a tangent and not answer your question. She doesn't discuss grades either so don't ask. When I asked her about a grade, she went to her other class talking about me and calling me derogatory names. I warn you to stay away!
If you are looking forward to bettering yourself as a citizen, a member of the community and a person through education I would encourage to take Dr. Loonat classes. I have taken two classes and I haven't hard enough yet. There are a lot of readings available online, accesses to feedbacks online in Canvas, Skype and Via email, and amazing lectures.
Dr. Loonat would go out of her way to accommodate the students' needs. Many would say she is hard grader, If you do your readings, participate in class and go to office hours or ask for help online, you will assure your success. The class materials assure the quality of learning to a university level. An inspiration for social justice and equality.
A heavy reading load but great material. Dr. Loonat has high expectations for her students but with your education in mind. I enjoyed her class. Do ALL the work and you will succeed. No book required!
I took her class, and... I would not want to take it again because it is a lot of work that is so unnecessary. You'd be better off writing word what she says in her lectures, because at the end all the essays and summarizations have to be the way she wants it and the words she wants. Also, its basically just philosophy all over again and yep nooooo
The classroom is not about philosophy or political science. I had to pay for my classes, which I payed for philosophy, and political science. Instead, I got an entire quarter with both the classes talking about white supremacy entirely. Instead of class material, the conversations will be predominantly about white supremacy. Falsely labeled classes
Dr. Loonat is brilliant, respectful & encouraging. She doesn't hold back & some sheltered people can't handle uncomfortable truths. There's lots of homework, and you MUST meet w/ her at LEAST 5 times during her only office hour of 11:30-12:20 (hope you don't have another class then!) or you won't get credit for the MANY assignments & final paper.
While this isnt the hardest class ever, Dr. Loonat really makes you work for your grade. Assighnments themselves are not terribly hard, but there is alot of them and they are very repetitive. Also, you may go a week without any assighnments then have reasonably large summaries due every day for two weeks straight (including weekends).
I ended up withdrawing from her class. Not only was the workload ridiculous, but she is NOT a pleasant instructor. I really wanted to enjoy taking philosophy, but she is very political and if you disagree in the slightest, your grade WILL suffer. The only way you would love one of her classes is if you enjoy sucking up. She plays favorites HARD :(
Dr. Loonat is the best professor I have ever had. Her philosophy and political science classes taught me how to really think critically. She is a tough grader and makes students work hard, but she truly cares about all of her students. I have been at WWU for a year now, and still haven't learned as much in any of my classes as I did in her class.
She grades you good if you bulls**t the assignments and make then seem to fit her opinion. If you dont think her way or make your assignments look like you dont value the same things as her she gives you a bad grade. I turned in the same assignment every time but just changed the first sentence and still got 100% on every assignment.
If you start the class a bigot, buckle up and get ready to get real cool about a lot of stuff real quick. This class tackles tough social issues and if you're not ready face racism, sexism, cisheteronormativity, and graphic detail of injustices you're going to want to change that or not take the class. Your performance depends on openmindedness
Assignments due daily that required reading from a book of essays and expected to know ethics from THEM. Provided us with an incorrect link to the wrong version of the book which hindered half of the class. All daily assignments were pass or fail. No lectures videos, or flexibility, read the text and fill in the one sentence assignment structure.
Ms. Loonat is by far the most qualified teacher i have ever studied under. Well traveled and studied, multilingual, and extremely insightful. Her grading criteria is tough, but she is always fair. While she never makes us read out of any textbook, she does assign material that is beneficial to the module at hand, without pointless busy work.
While I received an A in her class, the class overall was draining. I took her for sociology 101 and let me tell you to get ready to submit work every two days. Taking three classes a semester was hard enough, but you had to submit work for two chapters and two quizzes each week. So I do not recommend taking her class with other classes.
I actually took soc 101 but it wasn't listed. Dr. Loonat was great! There were a lot of assignments, but the good thing is they were super consistent and easy to complete. I even finished the course early. She responds to emails quick and really seems to care about her students. One time I submitted an assignment late and she was very understanding.
Most of the assignments consisted of summaries from a heavily biased book & tests. I did not expect to learn about only one side of politics. It would have been nice to know both sides to fully give us a choice to choose & make our own opinions. The work was easy if you can scan through a book & remember the answers to later apply to the quizzes.
It would have been nice to have actually talked about Philosophy, but instead it was all about her own racist views. I actually felt really bad for the white people in the class, because they were vilified in basically every class. I would avoid this teacher like the plague.
A warped conception regarding the amount of coursework and time commitments one class should take. Her syllabus says that this amount of work is definitely need, and if you can't cut it, too bad. Two 4-page summaries and 2 quizzes per week for POLS? Calculus had less homework, and didn't take 20 hours a week of my own time. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES.
It's a shame that I'm limited to 3 tags for professors, because I can't express how awesome Loonat's Ethics class was. The format was simple: read a section, write a sentence on it, show it to her during office hours, have it corrected, turn it in for an A. At least a quarter of the assignments on Canvas are extra credit. Hard class to not ace.
One of my favorite professors I've ever had. She's so consistent with assignments and her grading is always fair. Even though there are quite a few assignments, they are so easy to understand and complete. Most of the week's work I was able to get done in an hour or two. On top of that, the course material is engaging and interesting.
This woman is something else. I take online classes so that I can work it around my schedule and continue my everyday life, she is requiring that you are on an online meeting everyday to present your assignment for the day. She is very biased and if you disagree in the slightest you will not pass.
I was very excited to take her POLS 202 Class, but she assigns work every single day EVEN ON WEEKENDS! She says in her syllabus that if you dont like the coursework load, your not fit. All of the summaries are repetitive, with a 80+ question quiz right after that. If you want to manage your time well, get ready to do 25+ hours a week in her course
There was an assignment every single day. This wouldn’t be hard except it’s required she checks it before you turn it in. She will tell you it will take her five minutes to check it. It will be an hour+ long zoom meeting where you’re waiting for your turn. Had an overlapping zoom meeting for another class and she never could get around to it.
This professor gives lots of homework, about one assignment per day. The only thing that makes up for this is the easiness of the assignments. She doesn't really get personally involved (e.g. zoom meetings) in this class. Overall, decent prof with consistent but east assignments.
I signed up to take a philosophy class not to have her social and political beliefs shoved down my throat.
This is an indoctrination class. Students are told their point of view is not important and then force fed the state point of view. Challenging her point of view means you lose. This is not a philosophy class. This is conditioning people to redefine what their morals are.
Dr. Farhana Loonat is currently under investigation for racist grading practices. She just did a 15 minute TEDx (not good enough for a real TED Talk) on how SHE'S the victim in this situation. That's all you need to know, really.
I took Professor Loonat's political science class and was very excited to learn new political viewpoints. However, this is far from what we learned. Loonat teaches nothing outside of her own, heavily leftist opinions. She discourages free thinking. She assigns a ton of work, 7-page summaries and 80-question tests every day, including weekends.
There was a lot of coursework which for me was easy but I can see this being way too hard for others. The issue I have is half her assignments were about American government the other half was about her lgbtq, race, leftist side that she would push down your throat.
She is sexist, racist, and grades accordingly. This has been proven by several students submitting for a public records request of her grades along with the gender and race of the students. The statistics don't lie and a clear bias is present which is against the mission and values of the college.
Dr. Loonat is an amazing lecturer who provides a safe space to discuss concepts, and has always been accessible outside class.
Do not take this class or any classes from this professor. Get ready to be told that your opinions and thesis statements are wrong because she pushes her leftest views claiming that your view is wrong. She makes you change your thesis statements to put them into her words. Be prepared to spend 20 hours plus per week in this class.
This professor was horrible. She took forever to respond to emails and comments on assignments. When she FINALLY did she was extremely vague and unhelpful. For my graduation plan this was a mandatory class but had I known the unprofessionalism of this professor I would have dropped it.
She was crazy biased would not recommend. We were talking about politics for the beginning but it swapped to some gender study class. I left with a A and it was awful, I couldnt focus on my other classes. 2/10, she at least taught me how everyone is biased.
This professor assigns an insane amount of work daily including weekends. I was failing her class for a few weeks at the beginning due to external problems, she would send me a plethora of emails telling me I would fail her class and to drop out. She didn't even bother to help me when I would ask. Do not take her if you can !!!
What I like about Dr Loonat is: She knows a lot about ethics, political topics and know them really well specially LGBTQ+, but the assignments are directly impossible, all 16 of 20 students drop her class, she demanded peer review which was impossible with no students, every day she encourage us to drop assignments and class. Financial aid wasted.
The class was really difficult.
Every day, she assigned homework assessments, which were simple in my opinion. She would email you on the day an assignment hadn't been submitted saying, "Gentle reminder, this assignment is due today." I didn't need to email her much, but she was the best and most supportive professor I've ever had. PS: (she uses :) a lot) I just loved her class!
She gives assignments and quizzes every other day. Grades off completion rather than answers, which I love. For quizzes, she allows two attempts. It's not difficult to pass the class/ get ahead as long as you do the work No discussions or zooms I loved that she provides the textbook online for free so there is no need to spend money on a textbook
The Professor is horrible. Please avoid this individual at all costs. They are prejudiced and biased toward white students. This person would completely wreck your college experience. She frequently goes off on tangents during lectures about numerous issues, including how the US government is essentially based on white supremacy.
She will not give you 100% and is difficult to work with. If you don't agree with her, you better be ready to argue.
Despite what a lot of people are saying, I liked Dr. Loonat. I think a lot of people are biased against her for her views, but in our class it didn't feel overbearing at all. The class is easy (2-3 assignments a week but all super simple), and the homework actually helps with comprehension (at least it did for me). I liked her!
Took her HIS121 class, which was so chill. Chapter summaries due about every four days, with the chapter quiz due two days after the summary. Provides page numbers for the in-text answers for the summaries, and three attempts, along with unlimited time to do the quizzes. A great class to take if you're taking some heavy hitters the same quarter.
Assignments themselves were straightforward, but getting them approved was a struggle. Unless you were a favorite you were told vague instructions and to “figure it out yourself”. Kiss up to her and you'll be fine. Her attitude can be all over the place but it's manageable if you don't provoke her further.
Dr. Loonat is really a great professor. She cares about her students and responds to emails quickly. Classwork goes like: a summary (based on the textbook), then a quiz the next day about the info in the summary, then a break day, and repeat. The summaries take me 1-2 hours, and the quizzes are about 30 minutes. It's easy to get ahead on classwork.
I got a good grade, but the class had lots of work in a little time. I don't think she reads the online questions because I got 100% even when I answered wrong on purpose. I used the PDF and Word search for the words in the question to find answers instead of the textbook. Later in the class, her page number hints didn't match the real answer pages.
Claims to be objective then will tell you "the personal is political" a feminist scholar-activist talking point which is ideological, take 101 first, if you have a progressive worldview this class should be smoother, circular grading system which is pass or fail in which SHE is the arbiter. Sometimes she's objective; other times its ideology.
I took Dr. Loonats class back in 2019, and still have nightmares about it. Kiss up to her and you'll survive, she acts like she cares for all her students but she will zoom into her own in-person class because she's scared to slip on ice, and won't tell anyone or let anyone else participate online. She will grade you based on if she likes you.
