Great! She's so helpful and sweet!

She's very cool, not difficult at all. Makes class interesting.
This class was hard.Take Theatre survey instead...Have lots of long readings.Attendance&participation are worth a lot.And she doesn't explain the criteria for essays.
Really easy, one of the most helpful teachers at UCF. She assigns a lot of readings which you don't have to read pursay, but you do have to participate in class.
If you can take another class besides LIT take it! Class requires a lot of reading and class participation. Essays aren't easy and there are only 3 tests. Also have group presentations.
The most helpful teacher I have come across, really puts in time to help
She's serious about participation! You'll read almost every night of the semester. READ b/c she will ask you in the next class meeting. Grades a bit hard but reasonable. Talk to her!! She not as intimidating as she seem at times.
Very nice teacher, but grades very harshly. Write the papers early then bring them for her to look at instead of your peers and you should do fine. Make sure you participate in class bc its very important to her. I never did the readings and I got a B.
She is one of the nicest professors @ UCF.I'd reccommend her to anyone.Make sure you participate ALOT.Grades papers kind of hard, but if you bring your paper to the writing center u should be fine. She'll go out of her way to help u. TAKE THIS CLASS!
Really cool prof. doesn't take crap from student...so AGREE with her. I am a terrible writer and never read or participated. Become friends with her (like me) and you WILL get that A (like me). Learn how to play her game!
Not the easiest professor in the world but she knows what she wants and lets you know. It is a very structured class, you know exactly her expectations for all 4 papers. Read what is assigned and write what she wants and you will do fine.
Cato is a great teacher. She grades the papers tough. But she helps in any way she can. Don't take this class if you are going to slack off. She will make you a better writer though. Sometimes she has a bad attitude.
Not an easy A, I even thought about dropping, but I am so glad that I didn't because she actually made me work to my FULL potential. Even though I ended up with a B+, it is the grade that I'm the proudest of from all of my classes. TAKE HER!!
She was great, very helpful and gave extra credit, granted most of it had to do with womens rights and stuff. She was hard and strict when grading but it isnt impossible to pull off a b. Take her it's worth it.
Lots of reading. Semi-hard tests. Great discussion leader. Verbal participation is a MUST in her class! If you love literature you'll love her class. I thought she was kinda cute, also, heh. She's young and likes Harry Potter. She is sweet and very nice.
Not an overly hard class, but she prefers to not really teach anything. She prefers to lead discussions, which can be interesting, but they are just opinions and do not sufficiently prepare for tests/papers. Her paper topics can be unclear. Dont speak unless its anti-men!
ugh, so painfully boring, same thing everyday, terrible books, terrible waste of time. u HAVE to read avg 30 pgs a day in this class. shes nice but the class is terrible, dont take!
I am a journalism major and have never gotten less than an A in an English class, and this class gave me a hard time. class discussions consist of a few ppl who love to hear the sounds of their own voice, and she is a tough grader. don't take her if you're looking for an easy A!!
Really young, but nice. Not completely easy, not hard. Go to class! Attendence counts. You have to participate EVERY class. She writes ur name down everytime that you participate. Grades papers hard, but easy test. If attendence or participation is a problem, then do not take this class.
Terrible teacher! She's not clear at all in what she wants for her essay, and then grades far too harshly. Also, she's not very helpful if you ask for help. Her comments on the tests and essays are not clear, do not show that she actually read your work, and show no reasoning for the grade recieved.
Great teacher!! Gives excellent feedback. I wish I could take all my english classes with her. She is very fair. Take her if you can.
Teacher who is a good person to talk to and help you but grades harshly.Class is fun,but then it doesnt matter how fun it is when you leave with a grade lower than you deserved.I highly recommend you dont take her because you cant get an A unless you are an excellent writer and raise urhand 500x.
She loves students who interact and talk the whole time. Your participation really has to be at least 90%. You can't miss more than 3 absences/3 tardies or she starts to drop your grade. Grades pretty hard on the cores, but she allows you to re-do 1 of them. Come to class, participate, and read!
This class was sooo not asa bad as everyone makes it. She expects a lot out of the students and she gets it. I barely participated and write really bad and got an A. BE HER FRIEND and she will review ur paper before its due (hint hint) which gives you a better grade! Come on kids play her game!
Very fair professor. You have to attend her class though. It is basically a sicussion, and she never lecutres. She like you to have at least one comment per class. Papers are easy if you follow the guidlines. Overall a great professor.
The entire class is discussion; I felt cheated that she never lectured, because she seems very knowledgeable. Doesn't seem fair that participation is quantity, not quality; the people that have verbal diarrhea and nothing *real* to contribute get A's in participation, which is ridiculous.
The below comments are accurate. Cato does seem to be very knowledgeable in the subject matter, but never really verbalizes her knowledge directly through lecture. The course is purely class discussion. If you are a quiet student, your grade will suffer because of this, which is unfortunate.
If you are not a good writer, do not take this teacher! She is not an easy grader! I highly recommend Branciforte, Rosemarie.
She makes us do a lot of work but she's really nice.
On tests, I felt completely unprepared although I read and reread all the readings. They are based mostly on random of a story. I don't understand why, but she would not let me make up an exam I had to miss for religious reasons so I had to cut my holiday short for her test. I wouldn't take her
Really cool, young professor, great personality. But a tough grader! Don't mistake her niceness for an easy A! 2 exams, not too hard, not really easy. 1 presentation, 2 4-5pg papers, hard to get an A on. Uses +/-. Read, attend class and participate!
Be honest with yourself and you will do good in this class. Cato is a feminist so be careful what you say about women around her, knowing this write your papers about liberation, equality, the end of the corporate glass ceiling, or anything dealing with progressive subjects. She is good and she knows her english and she is a great proof reader.
She is a very informative woman
A. Interesting Class B. U don't just summarize the texts; u analyze and synthesize
Ms. Cato is an excellent professor and I highly recammend her. She was very helpful with everything and answered my hundred seemingly repetitive questions. She was always willing to meet with me and made the class so much easier. She was very understanding and wants to help you get an A!
She is extremely helpful, knowedgeable, a very detailed grader and cares a lot about her students... highly reccomend. (any bad feedback is given I wouls assume by lazy students...
This was a great class. Farrah is awesome! Just don't try to b.s. her because she usually knows and doesn't like it
I think shes a pretty good teacher, in the beg. i hated her until i started going to her office hrs. I recom. that if u take her. She really isnt looking to fail anybody but her class does revolve around homework and participation. Worst thing: she counts atten./ best thing: shes not that bad and u really do learn..i signed up for her class again!
farrah is a wonderful professor. she's very understanding and helpful. highly recommended.
Cato knows her subject. You have to put effort into your papers or else you will do poorly. Grades consisted of 4 papers, participation and a final. She does do attendance and participation is very important. She is a major feminist and will bring up the subject in class. Class is made up of disucssion about prior readings and paper understandings.
Cato is a feminist so watch what you say in class. She is really big on participation, so as long as you say something every class you'll be alright. She also takes attendance every class. She's not an easy prof, but not hard either. If you put some effort in your papers, you'll get a B. It's also a good idea to talk to her outside of class.
Good teacher, tough grader a little vague on how to fix your not so good sentences. She's not an easy A but she is good. Very helpful if you need it.
It's a 2000 level class and she expect grad students. Vague on what she wants from you. Helpful, but not in class. Knows her literature, but not how to teach. Does not understand how people learn. She's okay, but I wouldn't recommend her.
well, be aware of this VERYYYY feminist professor. Once she has a set look upon you, you can't change it. Your grade will be the same all the way through. I've taken her twice because she is a good "teacher" that doesn't mean you can do well. Don't plan on an A, but B's are possible. ( ATtendence is STRICT!!!)
Not a very great teacher. she's a feminist and grades very harshly. vague on what she wants in your papers. strict attendance. i would not recommend her there are plenty of better English teachers out there.
She was a great teacher, played a lot of games in class. While the class seemed pointless sometimes you have to go because she takes attendance. Its basically write 4 papers, cite everything and you're good to go. Much like a highschool english class. Oh and read the passages because she gets mad if you don't. Overall I would reccomend her fun clas
Farrah is a great teacher. She is hard, but she does give you a way to make up some work. Go to class, it can mean the difference between an A and a B. Don't expect an easy A in her lit classes, though, you have to work hard for your grade. Read the material, it's helpful and makes the class that much easier. I would take a class with her again.
She is very hard. I wouldn't recommend her to anyone. She makes jokes that aren't funny and she is very feminist. Look for another teacher, there are better ones.
Class is very repitive and extremely boring. Make sure to say at least 2 things everyday in discussion.
u can only miss six days then u fail. go to class and take advantage of her office hours. if u go to her she will happily help u and guide u. she is not always clear in what she wants in your papers but she gives you freedom to write most of what u want as long as you stay focused on ur point, which is something u should have learned in high school
No Comments
If you don't enjoy writing,do not take her. She tends to think that her class is the only class that matters. Lots of homework, papers must be pretty impressive to get a B.
Terrible. She doesn't explain anything and is boring. You have to participate in meaningless discussions and going to class will be the hardest thing to do. SO BORING!
Cato is a very serious teacher, if you're looking for an easy A, this isnt the class but I learned a lot, and she helps you if u need. I recommend if you're interested in learning and willing to put effort into it..
i did not enjoy taking enc1102 with professor cato. discussions are boring and unimportant. your grade based basically only by 4 essays. she is the kind of teacher who seems like she doesn't want to give you a good grade. i don't recommend taking a class with this professor.
Loves Harry Potter (maybe a little too much). She's a fair grader but seems like she never wants to give an A. A lot of disscussion work with some time reading for it. Follow the syllubys and read what it says before class cause the work is based on what she told you to read and you get participation credit.
oh man so depressing waking up and meeting at 7:30, dont take the one week half online classes. very very hard grader........ :(
i took her for women studies. she NEEDS to stick to ENGLISH! she is a HARD grader. sometimes i wondered if i was in english class or women studies... DONT TAKE HER FOR WOMEN STUDIES. unless you want to be graded for grammar... more than your women studies experience.
Really a great professor. Not easy, but worthwhile.
I took the half online half in class course with her. She is a nice lady, but this class is not an easy A. Do 1 or 2 online modules a week and write 4 core papers for your grade. I never received an A on a paper, but I know a selected few in the class did, so it is possible! If you want to go to class once a week and work hard get this class.
Dry and boring. Hard grader. Shes not the worst professor ever, but I wouldn't reccomend taking her.
A presentation grade, 2 essays & a final proj..along with the participation grade is what makes up the course. It's not that great for people who need lots of opportunities to keep their grade up. She seems a bit uptight when it comes to certain discussions with the course readings though bc they are "inappropriate" but hey it's college now.
I'll just be straight up with you. Pretty much none of you actually like learning something here at UCF, which is exactly what will happen in this class. So, if you're "just average", then be prepared to do a lot of reading. She isn't an easy grader and participation counts.
The basics: Professor Cato is a very knowledgable teacher, and will help you really comprehend literature; however, this is not an easy class. If you work really hard, it is possible to get an A. Also, it helps if you are a good writer. The basics: Your grade is based on two presentations, two essays, a midterm, and PARTICIPATION. Discuss in class!
Great Professor. Class can get a little boring with all the student pres. 2 essays, 1 test, class participation in discussions a must. Willing to work with you. Tough grader. Pay attention to all details before exam. Lots of examples of assignments except wiki, which is finala assignment.
I'm on the fence about this class. It was whatever. Shes an easy gradeer if you get on her good side through talking in class..alot. Class is run by student presentations which has its ups and downs. If you dont care take this class..if your looking for something good..dont.
It's that comments in class are important. She loves class involvement and participation. There are reading assignments you must have read before each and every class. Overall, she's a pretty tough grader. You have to be an amazing writer to get an A on a paper though otherwise get used to B's. For an easy A I wouldn't recommend taking this class.
Definitely a tough grader but after one semester with her you WILL be a better writer. There's no way you won't improve. Making an A isn't completely impossible but it doesn't come easy. You'll have to work for it. Attend class and be sure to participate. If you're serious about improving your writing skills take Pro. Cato's class.
GREAT online professor. Simple class structure, easy to follow. Assignments aren't overwhelming. Just be sure to keep up with reading. If you need to take an online class, take her. Most straight forward online class I've ever taken.
Awesome online class, provided you keep up with the reading. Final project is a wiki, which you should sign up early for, otherwise you may get stuck with a more difficult text. Extremely helpful, relatively tough grader, but provided you actually put some work into the text discussions and the quizzes, you'll do well. Highly recommended.
Nice teacher, intelligent, helpful but I despised the class. I still got an A but boy did I have to work for it. Difficult quizzes, annoying discussions and long texts make this class a definite chore. Def not an easy A; you must read the texts, cliffnotes will do you no good! But she is kind and helpful so I can't say anything bad about Dr Cato.
I love literature but I definitely didn't love this class. Read carefully because her tests can be tricky. If you aren't good with online classes, avoid this one because it isn't offered any other way or with any other teacher, last I checked. Definitely a tough grader.
Lots of reading and comprehension skills necessary, but what else could be expected from a literature class? If you like literature and are willing to put a little effort into it this is a very rewarding class. Professor Cato was always very helpful and courteous with me.
Professor Cato is very intelligent. Sometimes she can be a bit intimidating. She is a very tough grader! If you are looking for an easy literature class, this is not who you should take! If you are willing to read every single reading (often lengthy) and participate A LOT, spend more time than usual on essays, and study then you will do fine.
Very confusing professor. Weird grading system but very intelligent. PARTICIPATE in class!!! If you love to read I'd def recommend her.
Not able to keep the focus of the class. Not very good at talking about uncomfortable things. She was clearly flustered and frustrated the entire course.
Online class - If you love literature, then this is a great class. Just be sure that you have time every week to sit down and read the selections at least twice. Quizzes are tricky, but if you read carefully, you will do fine. Discussions each week as well. Overall a good class. If you don't like online, don't take this one.
This eval if for the online class LIT 2110 - World Literature I. This is the BEST online class I've ever taken. Dr. Cato is knowledgeable, insightful and runs a great class. She is prompt in her responses and participates in class discussions which is very rare in online classes. I highly recommend her and would take classes from her again.
Dr. Cato is an excellent professor. She is kind and cares about her students. I took her class during the summer and I learned a lot about online writing. She is fair and very helpful. She is prompt in getting back to you.
This class is not an easy A. He has a passion for literature and it shows. She's very helpful as cares a lot about her student's success. Participation is a must for this class so you can't get by skipping on readings. She is c
The assignments are fair, as is her grading. Her lectures are good but sometimes she can get weirdly snappy with some of the students. She is very enthusiastic about the subject matter and I wish I had taken her later on in college when I started to take literature more seriously.
I loved the variety of reading, but gosh she needs to give her online class a revamp. Dr. Cato's quizzes are "tricky" (theme of class BTW) with COUNTLESS tech errors (she blames canvas), her grading rubric is harsh for a fresh/soph course, expects you to know everything, modules are full of texts without proper visuals, and the list goes on.
This online course requires a lot of assigned reading, but it is manageable. The quizzes become more difficult as the semester goes on and she often has technical errors in them that can cause you to lose points. You need to make sure you really understand the assigned readings before doing the quizzes and discussions.
Farrah/Farida Cato is a good professor. Her class is tough. I had to retake it, but that was my fault. You have to honestly do the reading, sparknotes will make you fail (speaking from experience). She tries to make everyone enjoy the class, but some of the stories are so outdated. If you can be dedicated to the class, I recommend her.
Professor Cato is adept at what she does. We, on many occasions, had clearly different interpretations of the readings, but as long as the interpretations were justified logically and textually they did not negatively impact one's grade. In fact, Professor Cato encouraged, many times, a healthy academic disagreement in the discussion boards.
I took this class my first semester. I thought, coming from another school I'd be fine, ehh, not so much. The readings were great. The discussions kept the class focused and the quizzes were appropriate- though like everyone else states, they were flawed. It made it hard. The professor is very good, but the grading is so harsh it is a shock.
After the first month there was a lot of reading, but really you can go online and look for summaries if you can't bear to read some stories. There is a quiz and discussion every week. Some weeks she doesn't do discussions. There are 2 papers, one for midterm and one for final. She's helpful if you need it. You definitely need the textbook.
She's the best! She gives notes and the exact answers to tests and quizzes are in there and the book. I completely forgot about taking my final exam and I never asked her if I could still take it but she took it upon herself to email me and keep it open for me till grades were due. LOVE HER!
One of my favorite memories of attending UCF was having Cato as a professor. She made pre-colonial American Literature FUN. Read that again. It's as seemingly impossible as you think. Her excitement for knowledge is incredibly contagious, and her positive feedback on papers I wrote really motivated me at a time I needed it most. It's worth the work
I loved having her for AML and I would definitely take her for another course. I would say to make sure you read. A lot of what she assigns is long and tedious, but if you want to make sure you get your daily participation grade you need to read. And also note that participation isn't just showing up, it's speaking during class.
Online this class was very clear as to what she wanted. There were no surprises, you know that each week you have one module post and a quiz due. You have a midterm essay and then a final essay and that's it. Toward the end of the semester she offers some extra credit. In the module post make sure to interact with others, that's your participation.
I love Prof Cato because she loves what she does and really supports her students. She's a wonderful person and a really fun teacher. She expects full participation in discussions, a lot of reading, and hard work on your papers. If you have any concerns or issues she is right there with you to help you work through it.
She was super great. I took LIT 2110 as a dual enrollment student who skipped English Comp 1 and 2 with my AP credit, and I had no problem. You often have to read 60 pages a week, but the text is very interesting. She's only hard if you don't read or follow the discussion protocols like you're supposed to.
Lots of reading-- its Lit. Extremely hard grader on papers. Most work graded by GTA. LOTs of work. Long essays each week & nit-picky, detailed, tricky quizzes each week. No feedback. Feel very distant from professor. Poor class overall. I wouldn't take again. I'm an A student receiving Cs & Ds on long hours of work.
I loved her, she was great at connecting with the class and when she got off topic it was still about literature. There was a lot of reading but it was a literature class so, what do you expect? It was a good amount for the class it was, not too much. Her projects made sense, and if you had questions she was happy to answer. Hope I take her again!
Cato is fantastic. She's great at engaging her class and loves what she teaches. You really have to read! If you're a slow reader be sure to keep up or you'll be lost. Her quizzes are fair if you're on top of the material. As a professor she's very understanding, fun, and approachable. Can be a harsh grader. She will not let you slack off!
Cato is INCREDIBLE. I would recommend her for any course you take. Let me be clear, this is not a class to take for an easy A, or any class with her for that matter. This being said, she gives the absolute best feedback on written work and genuinely helps you to become a better writer, thinker, and analyzer. The course work is heavy so be prepared!
I used this course to help satisfy my Gordon Rule coming from a hospitality major. I felt that Professor Cato was very tough and treated it as we are all English majors. I am not a strong writer so I struggled with this class. The books that was assigned for us to read was not that great. I recommend that you take a different class to score better.
Took for Magical realism. Be prepared to read a new book every week with a quiz for each one. Quizzes are HARD if you don't read every detail. Two group projects and two essays. The last week of the semester in CRAMMED with stuff... stay on top of your work. Participation matters; you won't pass if you don't speak in class. Overall, worth it. 7/10.
Professor Cato was amazing! Her module lessons were full of great information and her feedback was helpful. Since this was a 6 wk course there was something due every week, but it wasnt overwhelming.
I took LIT 2110 online. I liked the selection of texts. Every week has the same assignments - a quiz and a discussion post. The discussion post is HEAVILY graded on your response to another student's post (basically counts as your participation). Just make sure that you make time for the course's work.
Reading each week and a quiz and discussion post for each text. Some of the readings were really short, others were long (60+) pages. If u do the readings, quizzes and discussion posts are easy. Tough grader on discussion posts and essay, always gives feedback. Lot of work but the readings were fairly interesting. this class requires lot of effort.
Online class is a lot of work. Good teacher, but you will have to work for your grade.
It's an English class so obviously there's a lot of reading, but her quizzes on the readings were so detailed and difficult. Attendance is absolutely necessary because if you miss 6+ classes, you basically fail (in her syllabus). 1 or 2 quizzes per week, plus two papers and a final project. She was nice and caring but it was hard to keep up.
Professor Cato is by far one of the best professors I've ever had. She's so kind, funny and open minded and really integrates so many interesting topics into her course work. She does assign about 5-6 books and you are EXPECTED to read the entire book. She quizzes on the whole novel and is specific. Her class is tough, but she makes it worth it!
Take Professor Cato if you're willing to work for your grade. Readings and corresponding quizzes are due before each class. Attendance is MANDATORY as class participation is graded. In addition, you must complete: two essays, a PowerPoint presentation (group work), and a final project. The "textbook" is a free anthology which she helped create.
cool, critical, exact. We read 4/5 novels (fiction) and multiple essays that I found fundamental and important. they're fast reads bc the font was kinda big so it's easy to get through in a day or two. two papers: one critical, one creative. multiple discussions and easy quizzes if you read. Had extensions during COVID and EC discussions
She is a decent teacher, however I warn you, do not expect her to have a heart and round your grade up, even if you are 0.7% away from the next letter grade. Spent all semester with a B and my final paper brought me down to a 79.3, she pretty much said sorry for your luck when I asked her if it would be rounded as most teachers do.
She is nice but she is a critical grader and marks off points for everything. The class has a lot of reading but we used an open anthology provided by her. If you don't say exactly what she wants you to say she doesn't give you full credit. She offered optional creative options as opposed to traditional essays and discussion posts which was nice.
Professor Cato is a great teacher! She's fair and enthusiastic about her subject. She will expect you to take the class seriously.
Took her for Summer A and it was on okay class. I was a Literature major and its now my minor and I've never taken a professor who takes off points for the things she does. Extremely tough grader but does give detailed feedback. Lectures are a bit boring as they're all text, no audio and barely any embedded videos. Overall would not take again.
She grades too hard. I tried my hardest and could not earn an A on any of the assignments, only Bs. She focuses too much on little details that do not matter. This class is a GRW course so it should not be this difficult. This has been the worst class I have taken so far. So annoying.
Tough grader. Pay attention in class & do all readings (easy to get behind) & you should do well. Read a little each day. 2 group projects involved. Final is a content-creation type of thing (I used WIX). Attendance is taken seriously. Classes are discussion-based more so than lecture-based. Prof. Cato likes participation & hearing student voices.
The worst professor I have ever had the displeasure of learning from. Due to her teaching and course, I changed my major from Literature to Marketing because she made me HATE reading. She gave little to no feedback and took forever grading due to this you never knew your grade or what you needed to improve on for future papers or assignments.
She was actually one of the worst professors I've ever had. Assigned so much reading, disregarding everything else each student had going on. This class is supposed to be worth 3 credit hours, but with the amount of reading she assigns, you're guaranteed to spend more time on this class than any others. Gives bad, vague feedback.
I wanted to enjoy this class more than I actually did. Professor Cato was passionate about what she was teaching, but all of my assignments were graded by TAs, who were a bit tedious in their grading. I would've appreciated more of her feedback. In regard to assignments, there is a LOT of reading but that is to be expected! Weekly quizzes as well.
Very knowledgeable professor! However, I found her to be an extremely tough grader. No matter how much I applied her feedback to future assignments, I never seemed to get an A (even on discussion posts!) Make sure you respond thoughtfully to other students' posts, as she does count that toward your grade.
Prof Cato is great if you actually do the readings. Had her for this & AML3031; both followed a similar pattern of reading texts, & doing a discussion & a quiz every week. She's very consistent and clear, & loves when students apply the theme of the course in their writing. Very tough grader, but as long as you don't slack off you'll be fine.
Professor Cato is tough but fair. Readings and quizzes can be challenging, but attending class is a must. unstuck ai was a lifesaver for managing the workload - highly recommend using it alongside the free anthology textbook.
Unreasonable expectations for discussions, they're all basically essays. Even meeting all criteria, you'll never get 100. All grades hidden until weeks later, no extra credit, and modules are poorly aligned with work. You gotta navigate link after link to find anything during these very short quizzes, some with essay responses. Also moves up dues.
Cato seems like she is passionate about American literature. She expects you to understand very niche, philosophical ideas and random concepts. Loves essay questions on tests. minimum 500 words on the discussions. There is there is soo much reading. More than I expected for Am lit. no issues with her outside of the coursework. She seems nice.
She is a very harsh grader and the quizzes and tests are difficult. There is a LOT of reading to do for quizzes, and the quiz questions are really in depth. You have to read each passage super carefully to pick up on the tiny details she is asking for in the quiz. I am an A+ student, but I got a B in this class. I won't take a class with her again.
This is an upper-level college course. You are expected to write a 350-500 word discussion post every other week or so. Again: Every Other Week. There are 15-30 question quizzes every week that test you based on her lecture video, post, and readings with some based on videos from the textbook. She's clear on what she wants. Just do the work.
