A kind man and an excellent teacher. Passionate about his field.
He rambles in a very incoherent latin accent...and the course material is rather bemusing and irrelevant.
He is VERY passionate about his field (bonus points if you talk to him about "mountainology"). His quizzes are almost exact replicas of the study guides. Note*- just because you think you may have it easy on some grading criteria, don't underestimate the work you'll have to put into it. Overall, interesting class & great professor.
Do not take this class. Prof is good... but class is way too hard. He makes it way too hard.
Do not take this class unless you're into self-torture. Trust me; it's not worth it. Also make sure you don't take this teacher for any other class. I'm serious.
Avoid this professor like the plague! The professor seems knowledgeable but does not convey information well. He teaches this intro class as though students bring a wealth of knowledge to the subject; it is frustrating. Assignments are numerous, cumbersome, and often irrelevant. If you are interested in learning, do not take this class.
Take this professor. He is the best teacher I've ever had. No one compares to his knowledge, enthusiam, patience, help sheets, generating interest & capacity to teach. People complain that it's too much work, but that is a complete lie. Unless you are a bs major. great class, awesome teacher! A semester later, I am a more well rounded person.
I dig it! This class rocks. The extra credit makes you really show if you are interested in learning.
Generally easy, although his lectures are not pertinent to the exams. I didn't pay attention in class but read the textbook and got As on the quizzes. He gives LOTS of easy extra credit opportunities, take advantage of it!!!
he's an idiot. he is unclear of what he is even teaching yet expects you to know what he's talking about. pointless assignments, one being a 15 page portfolio due the last day of class that literally got checked off, only worth 5% of our total grade which is a huge waste of paper for a class about the environment! worst professor ever!
Great class...great professor...loves helping students, as shown by extra credit, optional field trip (also for extra credit) and study sheets for tests/quizzes...would recommend for anyone
I believe that this was a really well taught class. Dr. Saramento has numerous interesting ways of teching. He is passionate about what he teaches. He does a very good job. The course was effective. I recommend this class.
Great teacher. Yes the work is demanding, however if you do the work and the extra credit options you are sure to get an A.
He really knows his stuff, and he usually makes a couple of jokes to make the lecture interesting. The only problem is that the topics covered in lecture are no where to found on tests or quizzes. Read the book for the midterm/final and do the practice quizzes for the quizzes and you'll most likely get an A.
most useless/boring class ever. the TA doesn't speak enlgish, his lectures have nothing to do with the quiz/midterm/final questions, and questions are EXTREMELY specific. STAY AWAY FROM THIS CLASS!!!
This class really pushed me to expand my knowledge about the world. After this semester, I feel I am more responsible about enviromental stuff. Overall, I loved this class. Dr. Sarmiento is great!
This guy rocks!!Okay the quizzes have nothing to do with his lectures since all he speaks of is life lessons but its entertaining. Quizzes and tests are real easy if you read the night before and TAKE THE ONLINE PRACTICE QUIZZES!!! gives ton of extra credit and is super nice. attendance is mandatory which blows but w/e its reall not bad at all
Absolutley pointless. lectures are never tested over. do the practice quizzes from webct they help alot. I HATED this clas.
Dr. Sarmiento is a kind, considerated professor who is always well prepared. Excellent course. Enjoyed it and learned a lot. We were always aware of our assignments from day one.
Best professor I had at UGA. Tells great jokes and had a great accent. If you do not like to work at your class, take something else. However he is very generous with his grades if you show effort and attend class regularly.
I had him for an Ecuador study abroad, and I thought he was great! He loves his subject material, is extremely knowlegeable, and he's a nice guy. He lovs talking to his students. If you can do the Ecuador study abroad, do it! It's a lot of work, but it is amazing.
I think he is an easy professor... I got an A. You need to do the web quizzes and the quizzes he puts up...reading the book is useful but you don't need to read the other two books...for the project just read your story. He is very interesting but you will not learn anything from his lectures. He is so nice you will enjoy taking his class!
Good guy, great teacher. Really passionate about geography and Latin America. Projects were easy and interesting. Didn't enjoy running around campus for class certain days (sometimes held at local restaurant, LACSI, etc). Very helpful and offers extra credit.
What can I say about this guy. His quizzes are ridiculous even tho he gives you a "practice quiz" beforehand which has the same questions. His powerpoints are almost bare with info. His accent is confusing sometimes. He is strict with class attendance required every single class. He is pretty funny at times and is REALLY lenient on grading. Got A-
AWFUL. Most boring class ever and it's mandatory. He isn't helpful at all. I tried to make an appointment to see him before the final, he ignored me and when i complained about it he told me "these things happen". you can't understand him, the assignments are bogus, and tests/quizes are random. It's an easy A, but it sucks.
Nice guy, nice personality.I had Dr. Sarmiento for 2 classes and he is very intellectual. He loves this subject and it shows in the way he conducted himself in and out of the classroom.
Dr. S has been extremely helpful and professional throughout the semester. Very open minded class. Great approach to teaching. Good feedback.
Great professor. He urged us to think beyond the class lectures and implemented lessons learned in our daily lives. Enjoyed coming to class and learned more than I expected. Helpful TA.
Lots of tedious, pointless assignments. He is hard to understand and instructions are not very clear on assignments. If I had it to do over again I wouldn't have taken this class.
This guy ROCKS! Very smart and passionate about teaching. I learned a lot in his class. In fact, I consider this class one of my best at UGA
have taken all 3 classes that he teaches and every one has been interesting. he is passionate and very knowledeable about his topics, and his assignments may seem tedious but are easy. absolutely take him
He is a very nice teacher and he is very interesting and i would take his classes again. Sacred Geography is his fyos course and it is very easy to get an A and it is very interesting to learn about. You do two projects that are power points and easy if you just do it and are interested.
really personable teacher and wants his students to learn. Tests are not based off of big concepts in class, but rather small random details he pull out of thin air. Also he gives an assignment in which you have to get a professor to meet over a meal which is a little awk. Overall learned a ton and enjoyed. Offers 5 points of extra credit. do it.
He's an ok teacher. Lectures were kind of boring and we did powerpoints for 2/3 classes, which he posts online. His grading requirements aren't really clear and you have big final project due at the end of the semester. You also have weekly readers and one pagers due every week. Doesn't really review for tests, but if you review its an easy A.
He is so passionate about what he is teaching. He tries his best to make his powerpoints interesting, though he does like to cram as much information in a class time as possible. His grading system is sort of like the SAT, but he gives bonus points and extra credit opportunities all semester. There is a good bit of homework, but it was a fun class
Professor Sarmiento is an amazingg professor. His lectures are straight out of the book and follow the chapters, but he adds amazing commentary to them. He is so passionate about what he does and truly cares about teaching his students the material. He does have a lot of projects/papers but if you put in work, you get rewarded with extra credit.
Don't take this class! He's not clear on assignments, and I had SO MUCH WORK (4 quizzes per week, a weekly reflection, biweekly 5 page research papers which require you to sit down with a professor and ask them about your topic, and a 20 minute presentation on another topic). "You're Honors students, this isn't too much work" was his motto.
Dr. Sarmiento is the most caring and inspirational professor I've had at UGA. I came into his class with little to no interest in environmental geography, and I came out an activist. You will enjoy the class regardless of major OR ideology. Tests are fine if you read and take the short practice quizzes, and there is EXTRA CREDIT. Take this class!!!
I thoroughly enjoyed this class! Dr. Sarmiento is very passionate about what he does, and that is definitely seen in his lectures. He assigns work with the purpose of helping students expand their range at UGA, and truly cares about student growth. He assigns extra credit and is very receptive to feedback. I would 100% recommend this course.
Dr. S is great as far as creating relationships with his students, but he gives obscene amounts of work. Every week you have to turn in a one page written response on chapter from the first textbook. Every other week, there is a five page paper due on a selected topic that is combined at the end of the semester into a 40+ page portfolio.
Dr. S. class is/was awesome. I really appreciated his enthusiasm and he is willing to help no matter what. Not only he is a great professor but also cares about the success of his students and pushes them. He definitely makes the lecture enjoyable but it can only be so much interesting. Just study and you will do great in his class.
He assigns a ton of work, no doubt. You will always be doing something for this class, but he grades easy. He gave hundreds to everyone. He also gives a ton of extra credit. His lectures are super boring, but you can tell that he's really passionate about the topic. Really nice man, but a ton of work.
First let me say that he is a very caring, enthusiastic guy. He swears by extra credit, and is an easy grader--not that hard to do well in this interesting class. However, DO NOT take him if you need structure. His midterms and quizzes are baffling in that they are about randomly specific things that we may or may not have even discussed in class.
Loved this guy!!! He is so nice and so warm and passionate about what he does!
One of the nicest teachers I've ever had. The material is not difficult and he offers a lot of extra credit. He's great about working with students and really wants you to understand and enjoy the material he is teaching. Not too much work and a fairly easy grader. Dr. S is great!
Dr. S is by far the best professor I've had at UGA. He made concepts that I have learned so much easier to understand. A great guy, very understandable and caring. Take him!!
Here's the thing - Sarmiento knows SO much about his area of study, and while this is great to see, it ends up being a detriment to his assignments and lectures. He's one of the most unorganized professors I've come across, & glosses over dense geographic theory & expects you to know it off the top of your head come test time. Good guy, bad class.
Dr. S. was a great professor, always willing to help. He does a great job at explaining things and he is always happy to help. I studied my notes and the textbook and as a result his exams were pretty easy and fair. Very knowledgeable!
Sarmiento does a great job creating an interdisciplinary framework for a class. We discussed physical science, mythologies and cultures associated with mountain communities, and the pressures mountain environments and people face. He even took us on a trip to a nearby mountain.
TAKE FAUSTO'S FYOS!! You won't regret it, it is so interesting but also easy (only 2 presentations that are simple). He is so knowledgable and just adorable.
Dr. S is really kind, but his class might come off intimidating early in the semester, but the quizzes and midterms are take home, so you have to do some in depth research to get good grades, but it is not bad at all. Also some short papers, a 8 page term paper, a small presentation of a set of mountains, and the final is a group project 20 mins.
Dr. Sarmiento is super passionate about what he teaches and loves when students get involved. He is a super nice dude and loves what he does. His lectures are very interesting and often don't go the way you think they will. Absolutely take him if you get the chance.
Dr. S is awesome as well is his class. Very knowledgeable dude, I definitely take him again!
We had lectures every day (attendance is mandatory) which were scattered. Our assignments were video reflections for out-of-class videos, a group presentation, an individual presentation, and a few other random things. We also had 2 quizzes and 2 tests which were take-home but were not related to the content of the course at all.
Dr. Sarmiento is one of the best professors I've had at UGA. He cares so much about his students and the material he is teaching. 10/10 would recommend!
If you have a chance, take this class!! You won't regret it!! He really cares about his students and his courses. The class was very easy if you'll just put in the effort
This professor strives to actually leave a lasting impact on your educational experience. Is knowledgeable, courteous, and respected. I rarely write reviews, but i feel it is important to know that if you are able to take a class with him you are very lucky.
Dr. S is amazing. The class seems daunting at the beginning of the year, but most grades are based on completion/participation, the online quizzes (which are 50%) are open-note, and the final is optional. Would definitely take again!
Dr. S is one of the sweetest professors and really cares that you actually get involved and learn the material. It's a lot of busywork, but the weekly quizzes (50% of grade) are open-note, and the midterm and final grades can be replaced by your quiz avg. if you wanted. Super easy A and would definitely take again.
Dr. Sarmiento assigns way way way too much busy work that is really time consuming. It can sometimes be really unclear what he wants from students and it is stressful. Lectures are mostly him just rambling about things that don't seem to be connected. Would not recommend taking this class it wasn't that hard but it was a pain.
Professor S is a professor that knows his field very, very well. His class is simple and straightforward, and he gives you all the deadlines for the entire semester on day 1. His lectures are scattered and not very concise, but you leave class every day with a new perspective on something that you hadn't considered before. Very lenient grader.
Dr. S is a great guy and very passionate about what he teaches. He actually cares about your learning and wants everyone to do well. He offers extra credit so do your reading and pay attention. Highly recommend taking his class.
Dr. S is one of the sweetest teachers I've ever had. He's so full of joy and passion for what he teaches. Most of the assignments are based off of completion and/or participation. The quizzes are online and open-note and the final is optional. Wonderful man. Wonderful class. I highly recommend that you take him.
Dr. S is such a caring Professor that really valued his students. There is few graded work that he leniently grades. I definitely recommend this class as an Honors science credit because it didn't feel like one. Online quizzes and presentations make up the majority of this class work, with the option to replace Midterm and Final grades. Take Dr. S!
Very passionate about his topic and very helpful with extra credit opportunities. Not the greatest structure but still easy to get an A! Nicest guy ever!
Lots of reading quizzes that are easy if you read the textbook (it's short chapters). He offers up to 5 points of extra credit to your overall grade. The tests were formatted weirdly with a bit of typos and questions on topics we did not cover. Discussions and the RTTP simulation is fun and engaging. His passion for this shines through in the class
Do not take this FYOS! The entire class consists of making 2 power point presentations worth 40% of your grade each, and then presenting and watching others present. He never taught us anything, and it was very unfulfilling. Not what I was looking for in an FYOS!
I wouldnt recommend this FYOS. Prof Sarmiento is strict with deadlines and participation, so theres no cushion if you forget an any assignment or miss class. He grades easy but his class will be more work than other FYOSs- theres bi-weekly 1 pagers and a 20 minute presentation. He also almost never teaches himself, which makes class uninteresting.
Dr. S is a great person - don't get me wrong. However, his class structure is horrible. I can't say I learned much - the lectures are boring, the readings don't always make sense, and the tests are way harder than what he teaches. He gives you extra credit, but this class isn't worth it. Easy A if you act interested.
Honestly, I enjoyed this class, specially the climate change project and the debates. I dont say this lightly when I say that dr S inspired me to declare my major in geography. He is the best professor I have ever had. Take his class!
This class is fine and it was easy to get an A, but he tries to trick you with everything. Gave our class a "fake" midterm and then a real midterm the week after. Says he will allow us to replace our midterm grade, but then never does. If you take his class just be careful about what he says.
Such an amazing professor with so much experience in the field. He is so kind and knowledgable and has such a passion for his students. Some may not find his lectures interesting, but that is up to your own personal discretion. Overall such an amazing professor!
He misled us multiple times with his instructions for exams which was frustrating. The lectures are boring but it is fine. Act interested and do all of the homework and you will get an A without even worrying. 70% of your grade is online open note quizzes and a presentation with a partner everyone gets an A on. Overall would take again.
While Professor Sarmiento is extremely knowledgeable in his field, his lectures are hard to follow and don't line up with the textbook or the tests. He isn't a tough grader but is very deceptive, and your final grade will not reflect the weighting on the syllabus. If you take him, prepare yourself for unnecessary stress and disappointment.
Dr. S is an interesting professor, for sure. He's kind and wants his students to succeed, but he's very vague with what he wants you to do. Go to class... he takes random roll, but he says things that are just so obscure (and borderline offensive) that the whole class just makes it a joke. Be careful with the requirements, he'll change them lot
Dr. Sarmiento is a very unique professor; you will either love him or hate him. He's very knowledgeable and passionate about what he teaches, but his teaching style is all over the place. The class is an easyish A, it just kinda sucks. He is vague about expectations for assignments and doesn't help like at all in preparing for the midterm or final.
I personally enjoyed this class! Dr. S. is very knowledgeable, passionate and gives plenty of opportunities to have a good grade. We had pleasant discussions throughout the semester. If you are interested about the topics, I highly recommend him.
Dr. S is very funny and knowledgeable, but the class and grades are very vague. It can be frustrating never knowing exactly what he's looking for or how he's going to grade (but he does offer extra credit assignments). If you attend class regularly and participate in the RTTP, you should get an A in the end.
Dr. S is very passionate and a great lecturer. However, he's extremely vague about class and content expectations; I had no idea what to expect heading into the midterm or the final which was frustrating. He offers extra credit and the class is easy overall, so if you're looking to fulfill a physical science requirement definitely take this class.
Dr. S is obviously very passionate about what he does. The class isn't very difficult, but you do have to show up in order to do well. His grading expectations for the final/midterm were vague, but I thought neither were too difficult. Overall, he is a good teacher but not great with clarity. He does offer lots of extra credit opportunities though.
This was a challenging course for me because of heavy reading and new topics that I am not familiar with; but I really did learn a lot! It was a valuable and enjoyable course for me to learn and retain the information. I recommend to take this class with Professor Sarmiento!
literally the easiest A in college that u will ever get. u don't have to read the textbook and u don't have to go to class, either. midterms and finals r each only 10% of ur grade. he is also always giving out extra credit points. also there's no lab?! i heart geog 2250h.
Dr. S is a very fun teacher who cares and is passionate about his subject which makes his class feel much more involved. The class homework of textbook readings, review quizzes, and a weekly essay can be as difficult or easy as you wish depending on the work you put in. I recommend this class and professor
Dr. S is a great professor! Weekly quizzes and discussions can be a lot if you don't manage your time well enough, but overall, they make the course easier to do well in. Exams are not very straightforward, but they are easy enough if you come to class regularly. Dr. S is very passionate about his subject, and it shows through his teaching.
Dr. S is a great professor and cares deeply about the material. As long as you make sure to participate in class and do the work on time, you should be fine. Midterm and Final are a little tricky, but if you take notes in class you should be fine. I enjoyed this class, and all things considered, this class wasn't super difficult.
Dr. S is a fantastic teacher who greatly cares about the environment. His class is a really easy A, with online textbook quizzes (3 attempts for each question) taking 50% of the grade. Midterm and final are worth only 10% each, and even then, they are easy A. He also gives out some simple extra credit activities. Def recommend.
This man literally gave us a fake midterm and he's vague about rubrics and grading. If you took APES in high school, this class is the same content. Not hard to get an A, but overall not a super pleasant experience. btw he said some pretty insensitive stuff and assumed my classmate was Chinese (she's not) just bc she's Asian. Note-took in fall 21
Genuinely the most odd professor that I've ever had. I don't know how else to put it. Extremely passionate about landscape geography, weekly discussion posts were irritating but easily graded. His exams and assignments aren't terrible but there are consequences if you miss even one class. It's sort of a high stress environment but an easy A imo.
Good teacher, very passionate about his class and subjects. His project criteria are very vague, but he is easy on grading. As long as you try, you will get a good grade in this class. He takes attendance in every class. He is also very particular about deadlines, he isn't someone who will accept late work. Do your FYOS events
This class is insanely vague, but easy. Attendance is mandatory, but you are locked in, he will hound you if you have to leave the class for ANY reason and will yap on about unprofessionalism. No laptops, phones, foods or drinks allowed. He still refers to hats and sunglasses as "distractive attire." Easy A, but he is immature AF.
This class is absolutely pointless the final and mid term are worth way to much especially for how much work the other big things in the class are. The professor is full of himself and talks about politics a little too much. Seems like he just wants his class to be a big argument. Definitely one of the worst classes I have taken. do not recommend.
Dr. S was a cool guy. His lectures are pretty boring. It seems like he tried to make class more difficult than it was, and test questions were wildly specific about random things. He makes words up sometimes and some of his questions just don't make sense. He has an accent, so if that bothers you - don't take him.
He is lowkey a narcissist, will not let you leave class if you need to use the restroom (in an hour and a half class)), and is truly out of pocket but an A is possible. The class is a lot more political and philosophical than I thought. Be ready to write a research paper, midterm/final, group expose, and take weekly quizzes. Don't recommend.
Reading quizzes from online textbook + videos and questions every week. Lectures barely relate to textbook. Midterm and final questions are super subjunctive and stressful. Yes, he's passionate, but he does not know how to teach. Group presentation that doesn't relate to textbook + 5-page essay. But lot of extra credit. Do not recommend.
Dr. Sarmiento is teaching in an old-style way that presents PowerPoints, reads through them, and adds his experience and knowledge to them. And he gives us a lot of work; you have to write a page of reaction to the video that we have to watch every week as attendance grades. Individual projects, group projects, and the final research paper.
The only word to describe this class is odd. Pretty easy A especially because 50% of your grade is online quizzes with multiple attempts. He definitely cares about his students and tries to make the class fun and engaging.
Very nice but not clear on how he will grade assignments which can be annoying. He usually isn't super strict and will give high grades if you put in effort. If you do the weekly online quizzes and participate you will do fine.
Lectures can be hit-or-miss, but Dr. S really knows his stuff. Vague grading expectations, but lots of extra credit to offset that. Definitely use unstuck study and the free textbook to prepare - it helps a lot!
Prefers to glaze his own ego over lecture on the current topic. Treats students like middle schoolers intellectually. Outwardly says misinformation because he likes to speak on topics he doesn't know about. His exam questions and grading criteria are very unclear, had to talk to TA about it. Easy to get a decent grade but his lectures drove me mad.
Strange. Passionate about professing his knowledge; not necessary a good thing. Lectures have no real bearing on class, but attendance is 'mandatory.' Exams are hyper-specific and do not relate well to the course overall (write down what he says may be on an exam!). Give yourself 6-8 weeks for a good paper & don't sweat the project. Remember 5 P's
the prof is very passionate about the material but tends to go off on tangents during lecture; otherwise, very engaging, easy to communicate with outside of class. some materials are worded weirdly. memorize the many different P-words introduced by the prof: they are a crucial part of the material and it would serve you well to know them.
Dr. Sarmiento is a tough one to rate. On one hand he is a pretty easy grader for the most part but he is all over the place with his organization of the class. After day one or two I don't think we followed the syllabus week-week chart at all. Quizzes & tests were filled with INSANELY specific questions, which made studying for them a nightmare.
he is good. very passionate, if you challenge his takes he wont back down he uses a lot of complex words that no one would understand but go to class and give an effort and you should easily get an A
This class was hard to rate because it's easy to get an A, but the tests have very oddly specific questions and the lectures can be dull. The easy online quizzes make up 50% of your grade and he offers up to 5 extra credit points so do those and you will make an easy A. He is very kind, just be prepared to zone out the whole class period.
The weekly reader was a good challenge for me, but I loved this class. Professor Sarmiento taught with so much passion that was inspiring. He knew exactly what he was talking about. He is so warm and intelligent.
