The tests aren't easy, but the teaching style is excellent. He does his best to make Comp Sci fun while getting the necessary points across.
Very helpful and a great teacher. I would totally recommend him
Good teacher, good examples
Great teacher, friendly, answers questions clearly, makes sure everyone understands the material. An exemplary prof.
I didn't actually have him... I had the other 132 professor. But that guy sucked so I sat in on Fawzi's lectures instead. As soon as I started attending Fawzi's classes, my grade shot up from a low C to a high B.
Really nice guy..a bit goofy but a great prof. If you seek help, he is very helpful. Tests are hard but he prepares you as best he can.
Friendly, knowledgable, and fun, Fawzi teaches a good class. Tests and quizzes can be difficult. Not alwys clear what you're going to be tested on, but ONLY material covered in lecture is tested. No "trivia" from obscure portions of the text book! Projects are demanding, but interesting. Great instructor!
Fun professor, keeps you engaged during class. Tests and weekly quizzes are rather difficult. Projects are challenging but starting early on them is the best approach- that way you can visit Fawzi or your TA during office hours and resolve whatever problem you're having.
Good Professor. The thing about him is that he loves lecturing while most other profs will give you slides. This is good for people who are audible, i on the other hand was a visual person and didnt start catching on until i started looking at his notes from past classes. USE HIS NOTES FROM THE PAST!
Fawzi is a very good instructor and cares about doing a good job. His lectures are focused and professional, and he does a good job of making sure things don't get too boring. The exams were fair and reasonable. Overall one of the best CMSC instructors I've had at UMD.
Fawzi is the best instructor I've ever had. His explainationas are crystal clear - he has a knack for explaining difficult topics, particularly mathematical ones, in a way that the average person can understand. Highly recommended for ANY course.
funny teacher who starts off the class with random conversation
One of the most owesome teachers ever. If you already know java, the class should be a breeze, but the projects will be a bit of a challenge. Don't bother buying a textbook for his class even if you don't know any java. You can always google for a java tutorial. Projects might be very hard for java novices--but very interesting.
Avoid this class unless you have some programming knowledge. Not for novices. His personality is either you really like him or you dont. The ta taught me more than he did. Book was a waste of money.
Fawzi is an amazing professor that explains concepts clearly and always informs you of what you should know for upcoming exams. Exams and quizzs can be tough. Live by his study questions - they help out tremendously. Nice guy, but don't bother him with debugging. That's what the TAs are for. Does not curve exams and didn't curve final grade.
He is absolutley the funnest professor ever. You wont get tired in his class. He throws some jokes between the lecture materials so u dont get bored. His lectures are very elaborate and clear. He gives lots of examples so u get the concept very well. projects are challenging for people who does not have experience in programing.
Didn't actually have him as a teacher, but sat in on all his lectures while taking 132 because he was significantly better than the other prof. Good at explaining things clearly. A fun guy.
Fawzi is awesome. His class isn't that difficult as long as you go to class and pay attention. He covers everything you need to know for his exams during class and on a comprehensive list of review questions. Fawzi explains everything very clearly and has no problem stating it in a different way so it's clear. Highly recommended!!!!!!
Fawzi is the reason I'm still a CS major. Hilarious, engaging, and very clear. The only problem is the evil TAs. Stay away from the evil TAs. Fawzi is stupendous. TAKE THIS CLASS.
Really good professor! Funny and he gets you into the subject really easily! Take any of his classes, I recommend! He actually got an award of best professor at UMD! =)
Awesome class!
Awesome teacher!
131 is really fun! Fawzi is a really good teacher and explains the material well.
Excellent instructor, really enjoys teaching and does a good job. Uses good examples and explains very well. Very accessible during office hours if any extra help is needed. Tests are fair and generally well balanced (a natural 70 average, usually no curve necessary)
Exceptional teaching style. Does not rely on power points / slides. Gets across the material in an efficient and entertaining way. Never once had to open my textbook or ask a TA for help to get an A in this class. Just show up to every lecture and you will learn the material.
Awesome professor, reasonable and friendly. Focused and directed during lectures, doesn't let himself get taken off track while simultaneously not stifling others. Projects were very clear, fair amount of time was given and they may have been perhaps even a bit too easy. All in all very happy and satisfied, look forward to being in class.
Fawzi was an excellent professor! The lectures were fun and easy to understand. Graded materials were quite fair. The exams were very short and not that hard if you studied. Outside of class, Fawzi is approachable and easy to talk to. Someone else said that Fawzi didn't help them during office hours, but I find that very hard to believe!
Very respectable person who knows Java very well. He grades extremely fairly, but strictly. Some other instructors in this department give away grades for free to avoid conflict with students; I believe this is entirely unnecessary. Fawzi teaches you want you have to learn, and if you can't do it; he's doing you a favor by letting you know.
Terrible professor! Although, he preaches about the importance of asking questions, he does n't do a good job of answering them and often brushed me off when I would ask a question. Not everyone who takes his class is a Computer Science major, and he does n't care to explain the material. Don't take his class! Very rude!
The person who wrote the review below mine is absolutely wrong! Fawzi was extremely patient and polite when answering questions during the lecture, no matter how stupid the question. But if someone kept asking the *exact same* question over and over Fawzi would say, "We need to move on... Let's talk more after class." Fawzi was awesome!
I have never come across such an irresponsible professor. He does n't care to explain information. Save yourself the headache and DO NOT take his class. There are much better professors that are 10 times better than him!
Worst professor ever!
You know there is something wrong with a professor who avoids your question by telling you that "there eyes are bad and that they can't see what you wrote" instead of just saying that they have to go. I usually don't bad mouth professors, but he sucks!
Fawzi was amazing! I was dreading this class, but by the end it was my favorite this semester. He is really good at exlaining difficult topics, and he makes the class fun. I wish I could take more classes with Fawzi!
This class was not as easy as I was expecting, but Fawzi was a great prof. He really cares about his students and goes out of his way to make sure everyone learns the material. The projects are hard, but he helped me out quite a bit in office hours. He's my favorite prof at MD so far.
CMSC 132 with Fawzi was overall a great class. Its easy to pay attention during lecture because he's funny and knows his stuff. Also he's just a really nice guy outside of class. He helped me figure out a plan for future semesters and talked with me about my future in C.S. I wish I could take him for 216 next semester cause he's pretty awesome.
He's a wonderful professor. He goes out of his way to explain concepts to his students. Also, he's very silly with his examples so everyone can be entertained.
Fawzi is a nice, laid back teacher. He's good at teaching and he's sometimes funny during lecture. I certainly recommend you take him for CMSC122.
Fawzi is awesome and a great teacher. He is good at explaining things and loves what he does.
This class was a lot of fun, and I really enjoyed taking it, but Fawzi was definitely the reason it went so smoothly. He doesn't allow laptops in class, its computer science class.. but that make so much sense, it kept me paying attention the entire time. Great guy!
Embarrasses you if you ask a question, very rude and not caring.
Great professor!
Great instructor. His enthusiasm keeps you from falling asleep in his class. Projects aren't too bad, but I've never had programming experience so javascript was difficult for me. I heard he's helpful during office hours but I never went. Take this if you want comp sci experience, but not if you want an easy DSSP gen ed credit.
Take this class seriously and show up for lectures, you're guaranteed to learn a ton and enjoy yourself while you're at it; Fawzi's a great instructor and a true pro
Fawzi is a incredible teacher. He has patience which is a rarity among professors here. He explains things in Laman's terms for the dimwit who's never written a line of code in their life (me). Hilarious guy, very helpful/understanding, brilliant, and sincerely loves teaching. I would take any class of his again in a heartbeat.
Fawzi is awesome. He makes boring codes fun, he explains stuff in non-computer science language. I would love to take another class taught by him if there is a chance in the future.
He is great at lecturing and makes it interesting. His tests do contain material taught in class but its always worded tricky, and there is no partial credit. If you ever have questions ask him during office hours not class. He is helpful but goes really fast so be prepared to keep up.
His lectures are clear, and if you go to his office hours, he is very friendly and will work very hard with you to understand the material. If you can take a class with him, you absolutely should. You will not regret it!
He's a good teacher and the course material is pretty manageable, especially in the beginning. It does get a little difficult near the end, so if you blow it off because of how easy the beginning was, you won't do well unless you have prior knowledge. Also make sure you take the final project VERY seriously, err on the side of more effort.
One of the best professors of anything I've ever had. I got a C in the class, but I was so well prepared with the material that I aced Math 310 and Math 410. He's a hard professor, and will challenge you like nothing else, but you learn the material really well. I wish he taught more classes, he's by far my favorite professor of all time.
Single best professor I have ever had. He is possibly the best professor in the entire school. Strict grader, because he wants to make sure students can write formal proofs correctly. Learned a ton from the class. If you ever have the opportunity to take him for one of your classes, DO IT!!!!!
An excellent, engaging and fun professor, I would recommend taking his classes if you get the change
Amazing prof. I did well when I put the effort in and poorly when I did not. I knew nothing about programming coming in. Aced most of the assignments but did badly on tests/quizzes. You have to know the logic well to do well on the tests since trial and error isn't an option. Very fluid speaker and tries to make students feel confident and engaged.
Best comp sci professor ever. Fawzi clearly explains all concepts and shows great coding examples. He even posts his lecture codes on CVS which would allow you to modify them and learn how they operate. Textbook is optional but helpful. Pop quizzes and practice labs are given in discussion so always prepare for them!
Amazing professor. He explains the material in a way that is very understandable, he makes a point to fully address any questions/concerns that students have about the material, and he's just a super nice guy in general. He doesn't take it easy on you, though, so do not expect an easy A in his class.
An amazing teacher. Makes difficult comp sci material very easy to understand.
Fawzi is friendly and takes a lot of time to draw out the concepts we were learning. His tests were killer, and the projects were super hard, but he was very good about giving us the tools we needed. If CompSci is right for you, he is a great teacher for you as a beginner, or as someone with more experience. Very funny too, lectures were great.
Without a doubt a great lecturer. I can say with confidence that I understand all of the material that was presented in lecture. But he's a mixed bag. If you get to know him out of class, he's actually pretty rude-in his office and even through email, he has made me feel stupid and as if my questions were not important. Still, I recommend him.
I went from failing at midsemester, to receiving a B- for final grade. I have no cs background. The lectures are very easy to understand. The material on the tests are, for the most part, conceptually in the study guides issued weekly. I wish he was teaching 132. I will definitely try to have him as a professor in future cs classes! DON'T MISS LECT
Great professor, made the material interesting and had engaging lectures. Has reasonable expectations. Does not curve often if at all. Will have to work for the grade you want.
Fantastic teacher, I wish i could get him in my higher cs classes as well. This class was easy for me as I have a solid background in oop. But for those new to the field, study everyday. Start the projects early. Review what he has done in lecture thoroughly. Also get extra coding practice using codingbat if you get time.
This class was a lot of fun, and I really enjoyed taking it, but Fawzi was definitely the reason it went so smoothly. He doesn't allow laptops in class, its computer science class.. but that make so much sense, it kept me paying attention the entire time. Great guy!
TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!! Fawzi is by far the best professor I've had at UMD so far, in and out of the cs department. His lectures are clear, informative, and interesting. He clearly cares about his students and makes a point of remembering names of people who answer questions often, his was one of the few lectures I was actually excited to go to.
Fawzi is one of the best of the best CS professors at UMD. He examples topics with detail and clarity.
Fawzi makes the lectures fun and has a great sense of humor. However, if you are not a computer science major, the class is extremely difficult. It took time away from my other classes. He gives good examples in class, but you will not know what you are doing unless you practice a lot. There are also never-ending projects. Very stressful.
This class is challenging and the work can be alot at times. However this professor is good at explaining and test are fair. You have to put the work in and go to all these classes to get the grade you want
Great professor and funny guy. 122 is easy for highly analytic thinkers. He explains very well and makes lectures interesting. Now taking his 131 class on MWF 4-5pm. Worth it to get Emad. He said at the beginning of the semester he would convince 5 to 10 people to switch to or add a CS major. I was skeptical at first, but then I was a CS major.
if you are new to programming, be ready to study hard, but his lectures are fun and interesting.
He's a very nice person and easy grader. He provides you with necessary information on how to complete projects and how to study for the tests and quizzes.
Pretty great lecturer. Take him whenever possible. If you have programmed before this class will be pretty easy otherwise this class will take a bit of time and practice but Fawzi provides you with everything need to pass. Weekly study questions are the key to getting a good grade on the exams. Very interesting projects.
Fawzi is an amazing professor. I had him for CMSC122 and took him again for 131. He is the main reason why I added CS as a second major). In 131, he gives quizzes and two midterms in discussion; both of which are pretty easy if you go to class and pay attention. Projects are graded 90% release tests and 10% style, so getting an A wasn't hard.
This professor is a gem; if you have an opportunity to take his class, do not hesitate. He is truly an exceptional lecturer who has the ability to present even the most boring and/or challenging material in such a way that you will understand it. His programming assignments are interesting too so you sure will not get bored.
Fawzi is a great lecturer and keeps lectures entertaining. The only annoying part of the class was the random quizzes during discussion. Otherwise everything is pretty straightforward as long as you pay attention in lecture.
Best teacher/professor Ive had in my life. If you have java experience, this is the easiest A you can get. If you dont, then Fawzi is the best person to learn from. He uses great analogies, detailed examples, has a fantastic lecturing style, and he implements fair grading and gives fair tests. Fawzi is definitely the best choice for anyone.
Fawzi is a good lecturer, has good explanations. He is sometimes rude to students in lecture and in office hours.
Definitely the best 131 professor in terms of lecture quality. However, he is a bit rude to students outside of class (it came as a shock to me since he's entertaining and funny while teaching)
Projects take up most of your time, but exams are far more of your grade. He is a great lecturer and explains the material well, but your exam performance and study ability really determines your grade. Quizzes are often but don't matter a ton.
Fawzi is amazing! His lectures were organized, very clear, and actually entertaining! He has a great sense of humor. He was also a big help to me in office hours -- very patient and never made me feel stupid. 131 was my favorite class last semester, even though it was a challenge for me. Take a class with Fawzi any time you can!
Best computer science professor on campus. Takes a complicated subject and makes it easy to understand. 10/10 would take again
Don't believe all the hype. He test students on material that he hasn't really covered. His exams are difficult. And he's not the most helpful during office hours.
He's a good lecturer but makes unrelated comments during class that are sometimes uncomfortable. Not lenient. Think's he is all that and it translates into his attitude when speaking to students and grading.
Like the last guy said, don't believe the hype. Constant pop quizzes, never had the chance to learn the material before we were tested on it. Exams assessed us on material we'd never been really taught. I wish I had taken Herman.
The first programming course I ever took was CMSC131 at umd. Fawzi is a great lecturer (although sometimes a bit rude outside of class, which is a valid complaint). The quizzes were tough, but we were NEVER tested on anything that we haven't been taught. No offense, but the poor ratings seem to be coming from people expecting easy A's.
CMSC 132 with Fawzi was a great experience. The lectures were very clear and I learned a lot. Fawzi is entertaining and its obvious that he loves teaching. He was super nice during office hours. Sometimes he can be strict, but it's only because he is pushing us to do our best. I just wish he were teaching 216 next semester!
You won't find a better instructor. If you have a chance to take a class with Fawzi, DO IT!! I had him for both 131 and 132. Now I'm a senior and he's still the best C.S. instructor I've had so far. Very clear lectures and you WILL learn the material. He's also hilarious and has great stories. :-)
Fawzi is a good lecturer but he's rude to students during office hours. He's arrogant as hell and it absolutely affects his competence as an instructor. Refuses to provide study materials. Take someone else.
Fawzi is an incredible lecturer and instructor. His lectures are anything but boring and I learned so much in every lecture. Fawzi is strict about deadlines and absences but if you go to class and try it's hard not to do well. He also always there for his students, if you ask he is always happy to give you career or academic advice.
Fawzi is the best! This was my second try at 131 and it was so much better. Fawzi spent a lot of time with me during office hours answering questions and helping me. He's really nice. He's also the coolest professor ever -- rides a sport bike and takes amazing nature photos (go see them in his office -- it's like a museum!)
I had Fawzi for both 132 and 250 last semester. If you want to learn Computer Science, this is the prof you want. The lectures were clear, well-organized, and always held my attention. He's also approachable outside of class. I highly recommend this prof.
His lectures are entertaining, but as a teacher he isn't good. Unclear expectations for quizzes and exams that tested on advanced material we barely covered. This class was not well designed for beginners, 35% of students drop his class every semester (ourUMD). You can still get a good grade by learning the subject material with outside resources.
Fawzi is a great professor. I came into class with little to no coding experience, but Fawzi made lessons easy to understand and was never boring. He is easily accessible for office hours and really cares about his students. His passion for his work and dedication to students has inspired me to go into computer science! Take him if you can!
He knows how to teach especially that many people are beginners which says a lot. He tries to take things slow and take his time explaining everything.
Fawzi is a phenomenal lecturer, as he explains everything clearly and concisely. He never uses a textbook, so all the learning is either in discussion or in lecture. Downsides include him being extremely condescending in his office hours and tough pop quizzes in discussion. You'll learn a lot from him, but you have to put in a lot of work.
This was a great class, but a lot of work! Fawzi is really good at teaching -- the lectures were very comprehensive and easy to understand. He knows the material inside and out. My only gripe was the pop quizzes.
Pretty good professor. You'll have to pay attention in lectures to get all the information. His study guides are VERY useful for his pop quizzes. Project descriptions make a lot of sense and are easy to follow. If you have previous experience with java the class should be pretty easy, just a lot of work.
I had him for both 131 and 132. Good lecturer, I liked a lot him for 131, but for 132 he is disorganized and the pop quizzes are too frequent and too hard. If you decide to take him, make sure you don't sign up for the first discussion of the day, so you can hear about the pop quizzes from others. Overall, his shtick is getting on my nerves.
The most overrated professor I've had the displeasure of meeting. Simply incompetent. Lectures lack structure or focus, he just rambles on in hist kermit the frog sounding voice. Has no idea how to teach, exams and pop quizzes cover things he barely talks about in class, projects are irrelevant to the material.
Fawzi is an amazing educator! I had him for both 131 and 132. He knows how to explain things clearly, he is well-organized, and has a thorough understanding of the material. The quizzes and exams are very reasonable. If you do his "study questions" and go to all the lectures you'll be prepared. He's also very approachable outside of class.
Fawzi is one of the best professors at Maryland. If you take his class you will definitely learn the material. He's very enthusiastic and knows how to hold your attention during class. Also was really helpful during office hours. Highly recommend!
FAWZI IS AWESOME! Best instructor I've ever had. He goes way out of his way to help students learn and is fun to talk with outside of class. He really cares about his students. His transition to online learning during the Corona virus outbreak has been stellar, the videos are great, but I really miss going to see his lectures in person!
Out of all my professors, Fawzi was the one who really adjusted well to online classes as a result of Covid. He improvised and made video lectures, which were top-notch, and responded to student concerns very well. No doubt the hardest compsci class I've taken yet, but it's made so much better when you have a genuinely great professor who cares.
Fawzi is a good professor he explains the topics well and gives good demonstrations. His shift to online was also good but it seems like he made the class purposely more harder online. Overall beware of the pop quizzes and study the lecture notes and samples of codes to have a better understanding of the material.
Great class! The projects were really fun and Fawzi's enthusiasm is contagious. Fawzi said the average in our class as we approach the final is 85%, so the class is definitely not too hard. He explains everything really well. The maze project was the best! I wish Fawzi was teaching 216 next year.
If you're going to take 131, you want to take it with Fawzi. He explains the material very clearly and his lectures are a pleasure to watch. By the time the class is over, you'll feel very confident moving forward in C.S. He's also a really nice guy and has a great sense of humor. Fawzi is the best instructor I've had at Maryland.
I took Fawzi for both 131 and 132 and I really enjoyed the class. His teaching style is very relaxed which makes it easy to follow his lectures. Of all my professors, Fawzi by far did the best managing the new online class format because of COVID. Would recommend anyone in CS to take 131 and 132 with him.
Fawzi is hilarious and his lectures are outstanding. I learned so much from him! He's ridiculously smart, but still approachable outside class, and he genuinely cares about his students. He seems to put more effort in than any of the other instructors in the C.S. dept. If you get a chance to take a class with Fawzi, don't miss it. He's the best!
Fawzi is one of the best professors I've had at UMD. He knows material very well, and how to teach it, and it shows in his lectures. I've taken him for both 131 and 132 and had not done any computer science before, yet came out knowing so much. Take Fawzi whenever you can!!!
I'm taking CMSC131 this summer with Fawzi. It's awesome! His lecture videos are very clear and informative, and the projects are mostly pretty fun. It's not an easy class, but I'm getting a lot out of it. I wish Fawzi was teaching 132 in the Fall. He does a really good job.
Fawzi is the best! If you want to learn the material, take the course with Fawzi. He is as good as everyone says, and also is a very nice person. I will take any class he teaches.
No joke, he is the best professor at UMD hands down. He is funny, his lectures are freaking fantastic and interesting. The projects are super fun and easy. He actually cares about you and has been doing this for ages. He is an interesting person; he has been programming since he was very young and drives a motorcycle. Everyone should take him once.
He's a great lecturer but his tests are super difficult. I waited hours and sometimes all day to get help from TA's. I blame that on the CMSC department.
Good guy and teacher. Just gives a lot of work. Do not take if you aren't majoring or minoring in comp sci.
Fawzi is great. Lectures are super easy to follow, and he gives code examples for every lecture so you can practice yourself. Project specifications are really clear and the projects themselves are a piece of cake if you start at least a few days in advance. Quizzes are mostly super easy and exams are cake except for time constraints. Take Fawzi.
Fawzi is a legend
During the pandemic, he records all his lectures and posts them a day early allowing you to get ahead. The recorded lectures are mandatory to watch for a grade and he has weekly quizzes. The quizzes sometimes have tricky words and the coding section is timed but it's not terrible. His lectures are super clear and he's a great professor.
I knew very little about programming before taking this class, and even through the online format, Fawzi was very easy to understand. He explained things very well, and all of the TAs were very helpful in projects or anything you had trouble understanding.
one of the best teachers you could ever have. took him online this semester and his lectures are so clear and tries to put in humor when he can. Highly recommend taking notes on his lectures and since they are online you can always go back and rewatch. His exams and weekly quizzes may be rushed but its for the best. very fast response time too!!!!!
Great professor. Projects are great. Lectures are made well: he doesn't waste time in teaching material, and his audio quality is usually great (you can actually understand him at 2x speed). Overall, great class.
Here's a few things you might wanna keep in mind: He doesn't have a piazza, and out of class he isn't SUPER accessible, so asking questions is kinda tough. I occasionally thought about sending emails, but I dislike bothering a professor with trivial matters. With that said, he puts a LOT of care into his lectures, so I can appreciate that (:
I had CMSC131 with Fawzi last semester and it was a great experience. He explains the material very clearly and teaches you what you really need to know so that you will feel confident moving forward. This semester I'm taking 132 with a different instructor and I'm hating it. In Fawzi's class you will learn a lot more.
I loved Fawzi's class. I am a capable and not great coder, and took it in Fall of 2019, along with 132 in Spring of 2020. So for anyone that relates to that, I would definitely take him. I had not coded prior to his courses and he really ensured that I was still able to sucCeed. Genuinely cares. Follow what he says and you'll get at least a B+.
Absolutely amazing professor. I wish he could teach other classes a well. He is so organized. The projects and tests/quizzes are challenging and forces you to really understand the topics, but he provides you with all the information and practice you need to succeed. His videos were engaging and somehow made me look forward to doing the work.
I love love love Fawzi! I wish I would've been able to see him in person, I feel like the class would've been 10x better! But I really didn't know anything about Java but I learned so much in Fawzi's class and everything made sense! Make sure you pay attention in the lectures and take notes and START THE PROJECTS ON TIME!
Fawzi is amazing! I had him for both 131 and 132 and he was fantastic. His lectures are actually funny and engaging and for someone who had no programming experience at all, he actually helped me a lot. Quizzes and exams are fair and oftentimes the questions are identical to stuff he warns about during the lectures. Lot of studying but take him!
Fawzi is one of the best professors I've had. He makes lectures entertaining and makes concepts easy to understand. The labs and projects he gives are super helpful because that's the time we practice coding.
Fawzi is amazing! The class was lecture heavy, but he made them enjoyable and it's so evident he is passionate about what he does. I had previous coding experience, but projects and exams were a bit challenging especially for beginnings, but his TAs are super helpful with projects! If you take CMSC131 you must take Fawzi
Really solid professor and a pretty engaging lecturer. He's very considerate of those with no coding experience, such as me. There are weekly quizzes and 8 or so coding projects throughout the semester. Definitely would recommend him if you're looking to take this class.
I took 131 and 132 online so all lectures were prerecorded, but Fawzi was very engaging and his style of teaching really got me interested in the course material and made watching lecture videos seem like less of a chore. I would definitely recommend him for any CS class.
Youll pass the class by basically living at office hours 24/7 and remember to pay the Iribe center rent for the semester camping there
Fawzi's really good at what he does. He knows his stuff and anyone who pays attention in lecture can easily get an A+ in the class. He does have weekly quizzes which helps to be on top of the material. Fawzi's projects are really cool, interesting and relevant to the real world. Would recommend taking him for 131 and 132 if possible.
Do not take Fawzi if you have no prior programming experience. You will struggle very hard on his projects. He talks fast in lectures and provides a minimum amount of code examples. Study questions are almost never reflective of what is tested. Lab answers are never provided. For beginners, this class is the definition of setting you up to fail.
fawzi is amazing. he's the reason I decided I want to be a cs major. ATTEND LECTURE. he explains every concept so clearly and you leave each class with literally no doubts. if you don't go to lecture, you won't do well. write down every. single. word. he. says. he loves to trip people up over small details on the weekly quizzes.
Fawzi is a knowledgable professor - BUT as a beginner comp sci major with no previous experience, I found that he moves way too fast and the class is rather unforgiving to those who fall behind given its speed. He also tends to quiz you on harder examples of topics he's explained in class - so always study in more depth than whats covered in class
If you have no programming experience you will struggle in the class. His lectures are very straightforward, projects are a little tough but fun, lectures are content heavy so go to class. Quizzes and Exams are on the material, so practice and they give partial credit. He is harsh on missing an exam or project and requires extensive documentation.
He's a gem in the rough that is the CS department.
He is an amazing lecturer! One of the best I've ever had tbh. He does make lectures mandatory, but he explains everything really well so it's worth it. Tests are kinda difficult tho, and most of the grade is based on tests and projects. I could listen to that man yap for 10 hrs deadass.
He is great, super personable, and funny. The class was tough but he provided lots of support. He has unannounced quizzes in dis, which is stressful, but they were meant to be easy, I got lots of 100s. He has weekly HW, they're hard but are meant to make sure you understand the material. The exams were fair. I would take him again.
Picking Fawzi was not the move for CMSC250. Maybe he was better before. But the homeworks are tough and take hours. All the quizzes are unannounced which means they are all pop quizzes. Fawzi does not record lectures. Some exam questions were insane (EGGS.) And the worst is that he refused to comment on whether or not he edges to proofs.
Professor Fawzi is engaging and passionate, but the class can be quite challenging, especially for beginners. The lectures provide a solid foundation, but the projects require extensive practice. Unstuck study was a game-changer for study prep, complementing the class resources well.
Fawzi is a legend! I had both 132 and 250 with him and those were my favorite classes I've had so far at Maryland. Go to all the lectures and you'll do great. I wish he could teach all of my classes!
The lectures were really clear and easy to understand. Fawzi is a great teacher! There were a lot of quizzes (like 14 or something), three exams and a final. The tests were all fairly easy and definitely not too long. He gives out high grades. Overall this was a solid class and I would definitely recommend Fawzi for CMSC250.
Fawzi was the best! I can't believe anybody could possibly give him a bad review. The lectures were fantastic. Very clear and entertaining! He also gave out really high grades. Just about everybody got an A or B. I highly recommend him!
The lectures were very good, the homework and worksheets were very useful, and he made it very clear what we needed to know for the quizzes and exams. The exams weren't too bad, and the grading was reasonable. My only complaint was that my TA was pretty bad, but that is not Fawzi's fault. Fawzi is a good guy, and he really cares about his students.
