Questions are straight from the notes, but it's all regurgitation. He wants you to ask questions but doesn't answer them until four other people in the class work with you to clarify your question to make him get it.

He is tough,dry and old, don't waste your tuition taking this class. You basically have to teach yourself.

"don't expect to get higher marks on your final grade." that is the words what he told student on his class. even though you have 80-90 average b4 the final, after that you might just get passing grade or 60s, because he contral the finals.
I used to say he was one of the best profs I ever had but my opinion has changed after he refused to fill out a couple of grad school reference letters for me. cheap!
despite what people tell you as long as you understand how graphs work his class is a piece o cake. you could easily have gotten 60%+ on the final just from reading 2 chapters in the text and not even attending one class.
Way too many notes. Still teaching the exact same things with the exact same notes from 20 years ago! He is simply around collecting a paycheck living off the tuitions of students. Time to bring in the new guard. Please retire Prof. Dar.
Anyone that wasn't happy with this prof obviously has no work ethic. He makes you work hard so the concepts sink in. Anyone who wants to learn anything should take this prof. Anyone looking for a free ride shouldn't be here anyways.

Writes a mini-textbook on the board over 13 weeks. It is very clear, but it must be studied on your own time. Assignments are a bit tricky but they force you to learn your stuff.

The material isn't tremendously tough. It's the same thing we took in econ 100, only if you took it with alex kelly and his multiple choice final, i bet you didn't learn half the stuff you were supposed to know

His assignments are easy,it's all calculations. However, on the exams it's all theory and not theoretical questions or calculations. I find the assignments pointless, they really don't help at all for the exams. Try to NEVER take his class

Dar is really not that bad. Yes, he is boring but you must remember that this is Econ (not the most exciting material). I thought he was a cute old man and his accent makes him funny. GO TO THE TUTORIALS - the TA is amazing!
I really enjoyed this professor, I am definately taking him again. Lots of notes, but they are 100% useful. The Tutorials are extremely helpful.
his classes were boring, it was hard to understand him. Getting extra help was a joke. His exams were a joke, since you must keep everything simple. How do you keep an econ answer simple, and direct!
He's one of the most typical profs I've met. Basically, go to class, take notes as hell and understand them, you'll get at least 75%. Plus super easy assignments(go to tutorial!). Text is useless so donot buy them. Donot take his if you donot like taking notes(important!)
All I can say is.... BRUTAL.
He tries to make sure eveyone gets it. LOTS of notes..helpful though. Know your algebra! He really tries to show the material by repetition in his lectures, and he keeps things simple. Tests are easy if you study, and the assignments are an easy 20% if you try, (go to tutorials)
Dar is tough and he knows it. Lots of notes, however he doesn't explain what he's writing. Assignments are a breeze if you go to the tutorials. The only words that come outta his mouth are "any questions or comments about what's on the board?" followed by another 10 boards of notes. STAY AWAY!

Dar is a very good professor. He writes everything down, and makes the material simple to understand. If you regularly attend his lectures you should do very well in the class. Going to the tutorials is a must. Dar's exams are hard, but that is economics for you!
far is a good guy he writes all the notes that u need on the board..if u study them then u should have no problem with either the midterm or the final because the material is straight from the notes...assignments are irrelevant to the exams but easy marks so u cant really complain..overall good guy
I don't know what any of these other reviews are talking about - In my 4 years of university, I've never had a prof this terrible! He robotically writes notes without any explaination, too bad for you if you don't understand.
You need to go to class to do well, he has his own notes, and the text is pretty much a waste of money as he will never refer to it.
The worst teacher i have ever had,and I have taken allot of classes, he tells you the exams are one thing and then there is not one thing on the exam that he tell you will be. Avoid him, and his writing is so messy you can't read the board.
Dar is a good prof. He's not hard to understand (unlike what some people say) and he writes lots of stuff on the board so it's easy to take notes and understand. He's preaty nice and actually complimented me on the fact that i'm the only one who asks questions and told me that I should "stay awake more often" hehe.

I get upset just thinking about the class. All you do is take notes all class with an occasional "are there any questions at this point?" He's an okay person outside of class, but I really didn't like him as a prof. I found Econ fun before his class, now I'm ruined for life. Great prof. I cannot beleive some people are trash talking him on here. Go to class, do your work and follow all his notes. He is an all around great guy, and is very reasonable in dealing with grade changes.
The majority of comments about Fazal Dar do not do this great man justice. The students who are blasting him probably skipped several of his lectures and put a minimal effort into his class. With Dar, you have to work hard, know your stuff, take good notes, stay awake and study hard for the exams. Dar is a great Professor.
Take notes and memorize all of them, then you will be fine in his exams. boring lectures. not really teaching stuff, so you have to learn by yourself.try to get old exams, might help.

Dar writes EVERYTHING on the board, which is lovely. Therefore you don't need the textbook if you make sure you go to EVERY class. If you miss a class, try to get notes off someone. Dar usually does a bit of a review of the previous class at the start so that helps. He could make lectures more interesting.
This is the year of 2006 and he still writes everything on the board, in hand writing yes. He doesn't tell ya which chapter that he's teaching. The worst prof ever. Why do we need a prof who repeats writing the notes down but never does much explaning anyways. He can totally be replaced by a textbook.

If you are good at studying notes and understanding written definitions then this is for you but the definitions are not clearly explained and are used in further classes so if you dont understand in the beginning you wont understand anything else. This guy is hard to comprehend and does not do a good job of presenting the material.
Brilliant. Gives no practical examples in class and then expects everyone to magically apply the theory to real world examples. If his lectures actually paralleled the textbook this could even be possible.
Expects you to apply your knowledge in tests without ever have been given any examples. Two assignments are given throughout the entire year. The explanation I recieved from the T.A. was even harder to understand. Help is available, but ONLY IF you aren't in class during the tutorials.
This guy doesn't really teach you anything. All he does is giving ppl equations and expect ppl to know how to apply to the real stuff in exam without giving an example in lecture.

Prof. Dar's class will make your hand hurt - all notes, all class, every class. Make sure you study well for his tests - in 202 we had only 2 assignments, but they were short and did not prepare you well for the exams (ex: I got 90% on the assignment and 60% on the midterm). Very clear and approachable though - just be prepared to work hard.

Worst class ever... there is no possible way to get ahold of him outside of class. I swear he lives in a hut somewhere. The only reason I'm gonna pass this class is because I had somebody else's old assignments and midterms. HORRIBLE!!!!! Way too many unorganized notes, use of the text would help lots.
HORRIBLE teacher..if you take his class be sure to find someone else's mid term! Every day you get about 12 pages of notes. I swear he walks back and forth down those 4 chalk boards 12 times every class and his notes are SO unorganized. No webct and i dont think he has email or anything. So then.."are there any questions at this point?"
I attended every class, studied hard, and read the textbook. I did well on the midterms and then he gives us a final exam with things that we NEVER covered nor were in any of the chapters of the topics we were to study for the final. now my average is killed. Avoid this prof. Trust me!
Be prepared to write notes for the entire class; Midterm exam class average was failing for our class of 100+ students (his notes do NOT prepare you for the types of questions he asks on exams) Assignments are okay--overall he's alright, just don't expect to get anything over a 70 even if you work really hard & come to class every day.
Dar is one of the best lecturers in Economics. He writes everything on the board that you will need for your exams. Dar is very approachable and explains things simply. If you do not go to class regularly or study from the notes thoroughly, you will struggle in his class. I highly recommend Dar! I wish I could take another class with him.
Try desperatly to avoid. Uses board with unreconizable writing has trouble with speaking english. usless for help and a pure waste of time and money. good luck :)

Horrible prof. You write a million notes and have no practice except 2 assignments that are way above everyone. Get previous semester midterm and assignments. So i have this professor my first year of university, i have gone to all of his classes, and read the text. not helpful, all he does is write notes, and not much for explaining. I'm writing a midterm right away, 8 questions, so they will be weighted heavy on a midterm worth 30% of my final mark. Would try to avoid. Trust me.
You need to go to class everyday you take about 6 pages double sided everyday. Also if possible get a friend in that class because his writting is really hard to understand, it helps to have two people decifering it. Do not take it with him if possible. He uses all theory and no actual examples except for the assinments

Ya know, if I were a professor, or any sort of teacher for that matter, I think I might let a student FINISH asking a question before I started answering, because then i wouldn't look like an idiot when i started answer the WRONG QUESTION

Doesn't use webct. Doesn't repy to emails. Awful notes, and lots of them. AVOID IF YOU CAN! If you cant avoid it, dont freak out...read the textbook word for word (its really helpful and provides interesting case studies which really helped me understand the course), and use assigments to bump marks up. p.s. sit close to board, bad handwriting!
if you are a robot or a monkey you will like this class. If you can memorize notes and spit them out without knowing what you are talking about you will do great. But if you understand the concepts and theories but don't memorize your notes(definitions) word for word you are screwed. class average of 59 tells all. worst prof in my 4 years.
I don't know why there is so much hating of Dar. I liked him. The so called "manditory tutorials" are manditory for people who can't figure out the mathematical concepts of economics without****footing through examples. AE = C + I + G (not that hard). Go to class, actually sit down and do the assignments, and study; and you will do very well.
This prof is horrible!!! I was totally into Econ before I took this class from him. He will ruin Economics FOR YOU!!! All he does is write notes on the board and expects you to spit it out like a monkey. However, he's tenured, so complain all you want because we all know what students can do about "tenured" profs. Yes this prof is tough but when it comes down to it he is compassionate and honestly cares about the student. I went into the final with a 26 (because of an illness) and i came out of the final with a pass. I somehow aced the final and he cared soo much about how I would do. In the end, if the prof is caring, the class is worth it.
not a bad prof.no doubt he writes so much on the board though; so you probably need to take a dozen 'Advils' for you fingers before every class. his exams and assignment are easy. i got perfect on all assignment and got 93 on the final. even one of my friends got 100% over all in his class. group studying is v useful caz all my 5 mates got in 90's

Writes endlessly every class and doesn't seem to know how to answer the questions that people ask in class. Tests are hit or miss with him as he only has a couple of questions each worth about 30 percent of the exam. I took 201 and got an A+ and I am near failing in 202. For the assignments go to the tutorial bc its with a TA and he will help lots
This prof is TERRIBLE! I have been to every class, and the content does not make any sense, hard to listen to, make sure your sitting close so you can read the notes, assignments suck, doesnt give any indication what the midterm/final is going to be. Biggest joke, if you want to enjoy economics DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!

Avoid at all costs, this class is not easy. unless you cheat even then you have to find someone with the notes. He hasnt changed them in 10 years. YOU CAN NOT UNDERSTAND HIM or HIS ENDLESS NOTES. He also lost my mid term and gave me a zero on it. This is the reason the UofR has a bad name with proffs.

I actually like fazal dar. His class is super boring and all it is is note taking, but at the end of the class for the final or any of the midterms all you need to do is study your notes. If you go to class and take notes you will do great. Dont buy the textbook, i never used it. Just go to class and pay a little attention,
the course wasnt too bad. its true all he does is write notes and read them but the exams have a small amount of material and are very easy. go to class study for a day before the test and youll be fine. this prof is the one you want if you need an average booster.

Sitting through a 50 minute class is so PAINFUL. I do everything I can not to fall asleep, because if you do... he'll point it out to the entire class, like he did last week when the guy beside me fell asleep...
So boring, and he is real hard to understand. You will write notes from before class starts right till the very last minute.
Only missed 2 or 3 classes, took copious notes, read over them for exams, did the assignments, still ended up doing horribly. Definately would not recommend taking his class.

yes all he does is to write in class but material is very helpful if you are not lazy. I take 2 classes Econ 201 and Econ 202 from him last winter and I did well in both. I will recommend him if you are looking for good economic instructor. just read the class note "ONLY" and in exam you will just copy and paste.very!!!!!!!ok
This guy is the definition of terrible. If you wanna get carpaltunnel from writing so much then take this class. You can't understand him, and if you ask a question during class he answers it like your a tard. All in all just don't ever take a class with him because you will regret it. He sucks plain and simple
Great economics prof. Explains everything, no real need for questions during lecture, even though he asks 4-5 times a class. Roughly 2 pages (Double-sided) of notes per class, BUT IT MAKES IT SO MUCH EASIER TO REMEMBER WHEN IT YOU WHO TAKES THE NOTES!! Midterms and final heavily weighted, but not insane if you understand the concepts.
If you have any choice at all stay away. This proff starts his first half of class by writing in broken english, and then proceeds to read everything he wrote in broken english. His tests are writen in broken english. Most people get the assignments from past ppl who have taken the class if they can find them because he hasnt changed them in20years
EASIEST CLASS I TOOK. all I did was go to class, sit there and write the notes, as long as you don't over think his assignments (what is written is what he's asking) it's an easy pass. read through the notes the night before the exam, I only read straight through once, and scored 93% on both.
Last year, I took Economics 202 with him. He is far superior instructor than the other I took in the UBC. Economic concepts doesn't change. I must say that the students need to attend his class, take the class notes, and pay attention. I know, he doesn't like tardy students, neither do I. Those students waste other students' time.

The easy A grade ever. I took the advice from senior students. I attended every class, and took notes. Yes, I got tired by writing his notes. His exam questions were straight forward, and came right from the notes. So, no tricks were involved Thanks Prof. Dar.

Absolutely awful. So far I've kept my grades up, but only because I went to the SI to do the assignments and found practice midterms with the exact same questions. Do not take this prof if you can help it. You waste an hour every class just writing notes instead of learning the subject.
I recommend avoiding this teacher. Take the class from someone whom is more understandable and reachable. He tells students he will not answers questions or return emails the week before the exam. Very unhelpful and everything I have learnt has been self taught through the textbook.
Alright class. Lots of notes, but only two assignments and two midterms. You have to go to class everyday but they go by pretty fast. Don't bother with the textbook - I never used it. His notes are enough to study from and do well.
This is the best professor, I have ever had. Students must understand that they must attend every session and take notes. He has always answered my questions. While in the class, don't go on to the social media websites and do texting. He will ignore you for the rest of your days. He had clear this rule from the day one.
Awesome. Most people do not realize that he only has 2 assignments which are in the library and he has 5 different midterms which are all on URSU in the old exams section. I never went to class. If you don't want to miss class take it with a friend and go on alternate days to accumulate notes. Text book is not very useful.
I found this class to be not very difficult if you went to all of the classes and read over your notes. The textbook was not used at all the the assignment tutorials were useless. Exams are on URSU and the assignment were pretty easy except they had nothing to do with the exams. Overall not a bad class just be sure to get the notes if you miss.
Went to class everyday and still sitting at a low mark. Still uses the odd question from old exams but not identical anymore. Assignments and Final not reflective of notes. TA gave me answers to assignments yet I still only got 50%. AVOID THIS PROF
Offers little to no help or assistance with assignments or exams. I attended class everyday, read the textbook, and still cannot decipher what he wants to see for answers. No part marks given, and assignments and expectations are grossly unclear. Avoid this professor if at all possible.
Midterms similar to his old ones which were decent, but tough final. I would recommend to stay away
He shows up 10 minuets before class and begins writing on a CHALK BOARD, so even if you show up on time good luck getting all the notes. His assignments are very unclear and marked very hard for an intro economics class. His lecture covers SO MUCH MATERIAL that ins't present in midterms. I would not take this prof again, to old school.
These people are all lazy buisness students. If you take this course its an absolute breeze. Make sure to take clear notes and reread them in full before Exams. I think people do badly in this class because they dont know that theres a good amount of math involved in economics.
If your goal is to learn something but not just pass the class, avoid this old prof. If you wanna pass the class with a good grade, ask for pass paper, i consider myself as a good student, so i didn't use pass paper than i got 60% . I know myself deserve so much more than that.... I went the wrong way, now is your choice.
Terrible, Avoid taking him if possible.
He is not a good "teacher". This isn't a judgement on him personally but of his ability to teach you economics. He writes notes that are unclear and does not spend time explaining concepts so that one can understand them. He is one of the professors that I would avoid at all costs.
